Lamb Chat Archive: Feb. 22

Kyle Lamb joined us in members-only chat this afternoon to talk about tonight's game with Michigan State as well as other men's basketball topics. We have a transcript below.

ostate (Feb 22, 2006 1:14:02 PM)
Kyle, What are your feelings about the game tonight? I am afraid tonight could be our first bad loss on the road.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:15:30 PM)
I think it's going to be a close game regardless. Michigan State has certainly been very imposing at Breslin Center this season, but Ohio State has also played much better than any other Big Ten team on the road. I suspect it's a game Ohio State will be in the lead or right within striking distance the whole way, but they need to finish it out. Easier said than done, obviously, but I am thinking it's a 2 to 5-point Michigan State victory.

MJ (Feb 22, 2006 1:15:37 PM)
Mayes or Sylvester playing in the MSU game?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:16:48 PM)
I expect Sylvester to play, and I would actually not be surprised if Mayes plays a little this evening. Mayes has been in the "Matta doghouse" lately, but I think with the depth issues, seeing how guys got worn down against Northwestern and the fact Michigan State's perimeter depth is worse off than Ohio State, I think Matta may play Mayes for about 5 to 8 minutes this evening.

InThadwetrust (Feb 22, 2006 1:17:00 PM)
if syl plays, who starts, matt or ron?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:17:11 PM)
I would guess Sylvester would get the nod if he's able to go

FisherGradStudent (Feb 22, 2006 1:17:28 PM)
Hey Kyle, will the b-ball team unveil new uniforms next season? I've always liked the old jerseys that the 1999 Final Four team wore. They should go back to the classic style.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:17:51 PM)
Fisher, nice title... it may some day be a title shared by one Greg Oden haha....

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:18:45 PM)
To answer your question, the plan earlier in the season was to go back to the same style of gray jerseys Ohio State used to have in the early 90's with Jim Jackson, Treg Lee, Mark Baker, etc. I have not followed up to see if this is still the plan recently, but i'll check on it.

MJ (Feb 22, 2006 1:19:07 PM)
Matta to IU?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:20:06 PM)
Definitely not. I think anyone who has read my Schott in the Arm column today can see that there's very little chance of that happening. I would say it absolutely won't happen if Ohio State doesn't get in any further trouble with the NCAA. And as of now, it's highly unlikely Ohio State gets any more punishment with regards to postseason.

FisherGradStudent (Feb 22, 2006 1:20:15 PM)
ha ha, thanks. I read somewhere that he was a Math nut just like me!

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:20:26 PM)
Yep, he (Oden) will be majoring in accounting.

FisherGradStudent (Feb 22, 2006 1:20:32 PM)
Kyle, I was at the VASJ/Dunbar game when Cook had over 40 points whereas Lighty struggled mightily. Cook looked like a franchise player and Lighty looked like he still needs a lot of work on his game. Is Cook always that good and is Lighty that bad?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:21:51 PM)
You caught Lighty on a terrible night. When you see him back at full strength, he's nothing like what you saw on that particular evening. David Lighty is explosive and tough to stop from getting to the rim when he's at his best. His shot can be more consistent, but by next season I anticipate that coming around. Lighty would have been a real McDonald's All-American candidate if he had never been injured.

ostate (Feb 22, 2006 1:22:00 PM)
What seed do you see OSU ending up with come selection sunday? How about a region?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:23:16 PM)
As of today, I tentatively put Ohio State in the DC Regional as a No. 2 seed with Connecticut as No. 1. However, a game like tonight could dictate where Ohio State places on Selection Sunday. A win against Michigan State and a decent showing in the BTT could mean a No. 2 seed, and I would still guess DC or Minneapolis.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:23:42 PM)
However, if I had to "prognosticate", I would bank on Ohio State being a No. 3 seed and probably in one of those two regionals

InThadwetrust (Feb 22, 2006 1:24:04 PM)
Kyle, predictions on the # of teams from big 11(ha) and big east getting to the dance?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:25:11 PM)
It looks like the Big East will end up with 9 teams if Seton Hall doesn't collapse any further, and Cincinnati can win one or two more games. Syracuse helped their cause a ton with the home victory against West Virginia. As for the Big Ten, I would tentatively say 6 teams with Michigan helping their case last night. Indiana could sneak in as a 7th team with wins against Michigan State and/or Michigan and a decent tournament.

Guest (Feb 22, 2006 1:25:28 PM)
Why not rotate more players (Twig, Bell, Mayes, and Harris) in, if the starters are tired?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:25:41 PM)
MJ asked why not rotate more players in if the starters are tired...

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:26:51 PM)
I think it's a matter of confidence in those players. If Matta were confident they could contribute enough, they would be on the floor. I felt Ivan Harris should have been on the floor a little more in the second half, as Harris was playing real well in the short time he played in the first half. Harris still has a long ways to go defensively, but I have been really impressed with the improvements he's shown over the last month.

Royal Flush47 (Feb 22, 2006 1:26:58 PM)
When is the NCAA supposed to hand down its punishment?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:27:55 PM)
I hear that an announcement could come within the next week or two. Ohio State will be notified any day now of that decision, and when it happens, it will be announced by the university and by the NCAA. We could be talking a week, but probably within two.

ostate (Feb 22, 2006 1:28:31 PM)
This seems like one of those years where it will be very difficult to fill out tournamanet brackets. There is just so much parity in college basketball this year. Who is your odds on favorite to be 2006 National Champions?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:30:15 PM)
I really like Connecticut with the way Marcus Williams has been playing. In the end, it's a guard's game though. If DeMarcus Nelson steps up, I like Duke as another favorite, but I could see this season being a surprise year. Villanova is the other team I will watch for. UConn would be my pick today.

DDC (Feb 22, 2006 1:30:18 PM)
I feel Connecticut would be the worst possible matchup for OSU in the tourny. They look likeLSU to me but much better. What do you think?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:31:15 PM)
Absolutely. Ohio State didn't have an answer for Courtney Sims and Graham Brown, so I don't see any possible way they could contain Josh Boone, Rudy Gay, Denham Brown or Jeff Adrien, let alone attempt to score inside against the nation's team leader for blocked shots.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:31:36 PM)
Ohio State needs to match up against a guard-oriented team and take their chances

jawnly211 (Feb 22, 2006 1:31:52 PM)
sorry, i might have missed this, but when is the official announcement for the mcdonald's game on espn?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:32:54 PM)
Tonight at 6 PM on Sportscenter. Check periodically this afternoon on ESPN News too. You might get to see a little McD's announcement preview with the no-brainer choice.

Guest (Feb 22, 2006 1:33:07 PM)
Any new news on next years schedule? OSU DUKE @ MSG??? OSU UNC in BigTen/ACC?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:33:20 PM)
There was a question on next year's schedule...

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:34:26 PM)
The Ohio State - Duke game at MSG is probably not going to happen. I think that was a scheduling issue, but as of today, it doesn't appear to be a go. These things have plenty of time to still be worked out though. As for Ohio State - UNC in the Big Ten - ACC Challenge, game organizers would love this matchup, so that's the one I currently would put money on. If not, I could see Ohio State playing Maryland, Boston College or Duke.

rbuck (Feb 22, 2006 1:34:38 PM)
What do you think happens with UC's coaching situation?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:35:04 PM)
Skip Prosser seems to be out of the equation now, so I see Cincinnati making a run at Karl Hobbs of George Washington. He seems to be the best fit.

buckguy15 (Feb 22, 2006 1:35:11 PM)
Why does the basketball team seem to struggle in the second half when leading at halftime? Lack of depth causing the players to be a little worn out?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:36:43 PM)
That was the case on Saturday against Northwestern, but for most of the year it's a simple lack of execution down the stretch. I think a few coaches have gotten the best of Matta in the last few minutes of games against Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin, but certainly the homecourt advantage helped those teams as well. The biggest thing I've seen is poor shot selection and poorly executed plays late in these games. Sometimes you wonder what the play was supposed to be.

rbuck (Feb 22, 2006 1:36:56 PM)
Does Brayden Bell ever see the floor? Any rumors of him transferring?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:38:02 PM)
Bell is very talented, and the coaches love his skill. I have not heard any such rumors, but being a kid from out West, you have to wonder where his mind is right now. Just watch during timeouts and see Bell's head staring off into space... he doesn't look like a happy camper. That said, if he improves defensively, he has a chance to make a real impact next year with his shooting and passing.

FisherGradStudent (Feb 22, 2006 1:38:14 PM)
Hey Kyle, what excites you more? A football National Championship with Troy Smith leading the way, or the Thad 5 cutting down the nets in April? I know, I know, in a perfect world it would be both, but if you had pick one?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:39:35 PM)
Ohio State fans couldn't go wrong with either one, but since it has been a while since Ohio State could have potentially seen consistent success on the hardwood, I would have to say you go for Matta's crew winning the National Title at the Final Four. We saw the football team get it's dream season just 4 years ago, so I say it's Matta's turn.

Guest (Feb 22, 2006 1:39:51 PM)
I agree, Harris should be getting some more minutes. Kyle, did you think you would see this type of offensive game out of Jamar? Reminding me a little of Scoonie in 99.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:40:06 PM)
A question was asked if I expected this sort of offensive game out of Jamar Butler.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:40:57 PM)
I didn't think he would be quite this good, yet anyways. However, I did think this was much more like what we would see from Butler as opposed to last year. I said several times that last season's performance offensively by Jamar was a fluke, as in high school he demonstrated much better quickness and a much more consistent shot.

buckguy15 (Feb 22, 2006 1:41:16 PM)
Not to be critical, but I find it hard to believe Harris could be any worse than Sylvester defensively. Thoughts?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:42:27 PM)
It's really hit or miss. Matt Sylvester at times can be a really good defender, whereas, Harris has always struggled. Sylvester did a nice job on Paul Davis against Michigan State the first time, but then when he was on Matt Trannon, the result was not as good. He has the ability, and he has improved a lot, but he's really inconsistent.

BuckeyeSal1 (Feb 22, 2006 1:42:42 PM)
I really like this coaching staff, is there any chance that any of them(besides Matta and the IU garbage) move on to other jobs after this year?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:44:33 PM)
The only guy on staff that could be in line for another job is assistant John Groce. His name has come up as a possible head coach candidate a few times (Duquesne is one I've heard), and there's no question that within a year or two, his name will come up a lot more. He and his wife just recently had their first child, and I don't know if he's looking to take a job right away, but no question it will happen soon. He would like to be a head coach, but he also enjoys coaching with Matta and he might want to stick around for this class first. He's also compensated well, from what I understand, so that doesn't hurt.

ostate (Feb 22, 2006 1:45:12 PM)
Even with the Thad Five coming in next year, do you agree that this year's team will have the better overall record? It will be tough to replace all that experience.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:47:20 PM)
Experience is nice, and early in the season it will show from lacking it in some areas, but I think in this particular case it's going to be a little overrated. Consider that as of this moment, Terence Dials is the only player on Ohio State that has ever played in the NCAA Tournament. Next year, Ron Lewis and Jamar Butler will both have that experience, whereas Dials is the only one this season. Then you consider that Sylvester's biggest problem is making poor decisions - much like freshmen would do...

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:48:17 PM)
So for that reason, I see the team next year losing some early games, especially with a tougher schedule. But they will have arguably the top PG and top C in the conference - the two most important positions, and some of these freshmen won't be like typical freshmen because they are real good and have played together a lot. There will be a transition period, but by season's end, I don't see that being a factor.

kleintime16 (Feb 22, 2006 1:48:43 PM)
Kyle - can we get a prediction about the score of tonights game with the injury sustained by MSU?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:49:51 PM)
If Sylvester plays, I see Ohio State having a slight advantage with regards to the matchups since Matt Trannon is sidelined, but the homecourt advantage will probably wipe out that advantage, meaning it's a toss-up. As of now, if Sylvester plays, I see Michigan State having a tough game on their hands, but I still think a 2-5 point victory is in order for the home team.

Royal Flush47 (Feb 22, 2006 1:50:08 PM)
Are Greg Oden and Daequan Cook two year players if they don't win it all their first year? Are Conley and Lighty long-term Buckeyes?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:50:58 PM)
I think two years is the realistic expectation for both Oden and Cook. Oden would be more likely to stay longer than Cook simply because he's a kid that loves school and wants his degree. If Cook stayed longer, it's probably because of draft status. Conley and Lighty will both be around 3 or 4 years probably.

wwt (Feb 22, 2006 1:51:03 PM)
why is Prosser out of the running for the UC job now?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:52:09 PM)
The official, unofficial reason being given in private circles is because of his contract, and the large buyout, etc. However, I think the real reason is because of Wake's poor performance and UC not wanting to pay dearly for a coach who had such a bad season. After all, UC officials have known for months of his contract status and it didn't stop from having flirtations through messengers.

DDC (Feb 22, 2006 1:52:15 PM)
If Cook gets in the McD game then what are the chances we see him in thier dunk contest? Or maybe thier 3 point contest?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:52:57 PM)
Cook is in the game, and I have no problems now spilling those beans if there were any doubt. I see him being in the dunk contest. I'm not sure about the 3-point contest, although he's good enough to compete in it.

Guest (Feb 22, 2006 1:53:14 PM)
I've been reading that Oden is becoming good at and confident in shooting 15-17 ft. jump shots. It sounds like his offensive game is not as limited as some would have you believe.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:53:36 PM)
ToMac makes mention of Oden's offensive game and it not being as limited as people make it out to be.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:54:56 PM)
Oden has some real skill offensively, and he's got a wide variety of shots that he can make. My biggest criticism might just be that he still doesn't go to these moves and different shot types often enough. I know he has a miniature hook shot that he can knock down, but I haven't seen it very often from him. He can also take the 15-foot jumper, but rarely does. It's probably a matter of confidence with him. If he gets it, I pity the rest of the country.

Royal Flush47 (Feb 22, 2006 1:55:08 PM)
I ask a question about him every chat, so here I go again...Anything new on Ben Martin?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:55:27 PM)
lol well in sticking with the theme... nothing new. Still Notre Dame and Ohio State ;)

kleintime16 (Feb 22, 2006 1:55:44 PM)
How do you see the regular season ending out ... i mean W/L the rest of the way and in the BTT as well ... and in addition to that where would that leave OSU ranked in the bracket?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:57:21 PM)
I think Ohio State loses tonight, finishes 11-5 in the Big Ten and will probably be the No. 3 seed. I'm thinking Michigan State will be in the 3-way tie with Iowa and Ohio State. Michigan State would be the No. 1, Iowa No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3. On a neutral floor in that set up, I could see Ohio State meeting the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament finals. But that's getting way ahead of ourselves.

rbuck (Feb 22, 2006 1:57:41 PM)
From the couple of games I've seen of Oden so far, my main complaint is that he is not aggressive enough. There have been many times where he could throw it down, but he chooses to lay it in or bank it and he misses. I think he will be HUGE on the defensive side of the ball, and the offense will just come to him.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:58:23 PM)
That's a valid complaint. Sometimes he's very aggressive, and sometimes he's passive. As I said earlier, I think it's a confidence issue still. That's why when he says "I'm not good enough for the NBA"... I think he means it

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 1:58:42 PM)
I've got time for about two or three more questions before I wrap up

rbuck (Feb 22, 2006 1:59:11 PM)
I have not seen much of Cook, is he much better than Michael Redd at the same stage?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:00:01 PM)
Yes. Redd was a terrific scorer, but coming out of high school, he was mostly a scorer and that was it. Cook is the complete package. He's a better defender than Redd was at that point. He's a good shooter, he can penetrate, he's a terrific passer and he's very good off the dribble.

rbuck (Feb 22, 2006 2:00:26 PM)
Do you see Kurt Huelsman doing much at UD? Is Chris Wright a lock at UD?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:01:17 PM)
I like Huelsman if he develops in a flex type of offense. I know some coaches see him as possibly a Mike Wilkinson type. But given what Dayton does, I don't know how successful he will be there. Wright is solid with Dayton, yes.

BuckeyeSal1 (Feb 22, 2006 2:01:39 PM)
Since you've seen all these guys. How sick is a starting lineup in 4 years that includes Conley, Diebler, Lighty, Kosta, and Lauderdale, wiith Walter and Mullens off the bench?

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:02:52 PM)
If most of these guys project like we assume they will, that's a very good lineup. It's really more amazing to think you could lose guys like Oden, Cook and Jamar Butler, and still end up with that lineup the year after, isn't it? That's not even counting guys (potentially) like Rakim Sanders or Dante Jackson and then Delvon Roe and/or William Buford

ToMac (Feb 22, 2006 2:03:55 PM)
Concerning the Butler vs Conley debate, since they are both strong defenders with well rounded games, don't you think that they will be on the floor together a good bit.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:05:16 PM)
There will certainly be times where that happens. The thing I worry about in that scenario is size. Both of these guys are no more than 6-1. I tend to think in most cases, when they are on the floor at the same time it's to give Cook or Lewis a rest. But they both are good enough offensively and great defensively that they will see the floor together sometimes.

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:06:11 PM)
Well, that wraps it up for me today. Enjoy the game tonight. We'll be back with a chat again next Tuesday (probably evening). Until then, thanks for joining me and everyone have a great afternoon!

KyleLamb (Feb 22, 2006 2:06:33 PM)
Take care everybody!

If DeMarcus Nelson steps up, I like Duke as another favorite, but I could see this season being a surprise year. Villanova is the other team I will watch for. UConn would be my pick today.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:30:18 PM)
I feel Connecticut would be the worst possible matchup for OSU in the tourny. They look likeLSU to me but much better. What do you think?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:31:15 PM)
Absolutely. Ohio State didn't have an answer for Courtney Sims and Graham Brown, so I don't see any possible way they could contain Josh Boone, Rudy Gay, Denham Brown or Jeff Adrien, let alone attempt to score inside against the nation's team leader for blocked shots.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:31:36 PM)
Ohio State needs to match up against a guard-oriented team and take their chances

(Feb 22, 2006 1:31:52 PM)
sorry, i might have missed this, but when is the official announcement for the mcdonald's game on espn?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:32:54 PM)
Tonight at 6 PM on Sportscenter. Check periodically this afternoon on ESPN News too. You might get to see a little McD's announcement preview with the no-brainer choice.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:33:07 PM)
Any new news on next years schedule? OSU DUKE @ MSG??? OSU UNC in BigTen/ACC?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:33:20 PM)
There was a question on next year's schedule...

(Feb 22, 2006 1:34:26 PM)
The Ohio State - Duke game at MSG is probably not going to happen. I think that was a scheduling issue, but as of today, it doesn't appear to be a go. These things have plenty of time to still be worked out though. As for Ohio State - UNC in the Big Ten - ACC Challenge, game organizers would love this matchup, so that's the one I currently would put money on. If not, I could see Ohio State playing Maryland, Boston College or Duke.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:34:38 PM)
What do you think happens with UC's coaching situation?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:35:04 PM)
Skip Prosser seems to be out of the equation now, so I see Cincinnati making a run at Karl Hobbs of George Washington. He seems to be the best fit.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:35:11 PM)
Why does the basketball team seem to struggle in the second half when leading at halftime? Lack of depth causing the players to be a little worn out?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:36:43 PM)
That was the case on Saturday against Northwestern, but for most of the year it's a simple lack of execution down the stretch. I think a few coaches have gotten the best of Matta in the last few minutes of games against Indiana, Iowa and Wisconsin, but certainly the homecourt advantage helped those teams as well. The biggest thing I've seen is poor shot selection and poorly executed plays late in these games. Sometimes you wonder what the play was supposed to be.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:36:56 PM)
Does Brayden Bell ever see the floor? Any rumors of him transferring?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:38:02 PM)
Bell is very talented, and the coaches love his skill. I have not heard any such rumors, but being a kid from out West, you have to wonder where his mind is right now. Just watch during timeouts and see Bell's head staring off into space... he doesn't look like a happy camper. That said, if he improves defensively, he has a chance to make a real impact next year with his shooting and passing.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:38:14 PM)
Hey Kyle, what excites you more? A football National Championship with Troy Smith leading the way, or the Thad 5 cutting down the nets in April? I know, I know, in a perfect world it would be both, but if you had pick one?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:39:35 PM)
Ohio State fans couldn't go wrong with either one, but since it has been a while since Ohio State could have potentially seen consistent success on the hardwood, I would have to say you go for Matta's crew winning the National Title at the Final Four. We saw the football team get it's dream season just 4 years ago, so I say it's Matta's turn.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:39:51 PM)
I agree, Harris should be getting some more minutes. Kyle, did you think you would see this type of offensive game out of Jamar? Reminding me a little of Scoonie in 99.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:40:06 PM)
A question was asked if I expected this sort of offensive game out of Jamar Butler.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:40:57 PM)
I didn't think he would be quite this good, yet anyways. However, I did think this was much more like what we would see from Butler as opposed to last year. I said several times that last season's performance offensively by Jamar was a fluke, as in high school he demonstrated much better quickness and a much more consistent shot.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:41:16 PM)
Not to be critical, but I find it hard to believe Harris could be any worse than Sylvester defensively. Thoughts?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:42:27 PM)
It's really hit or miss. Matt Sylvester at times can be a really good defender, whereas, Harris has always struggled. Sylvester did a nice job on Paul Davis against Michigan State the first time, but then when he was on Matt Trannon, the result was not as good. He has the ability, and he has improved a lot, but he's really inconsistent.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:42:42 PM)
I really like this coaching staff, is there any chance that any of them(besides Matta and the IU garbage) move on to other jobs after this year?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:44:33 PM)
The only guy on staff that could be in line for another job is assistant John Groce. His name has come up as a possible head coach candidate a few times (Duquesne is one I've heard), and there's no question that within a year or two, his name will come up a lot more. He and his wife just recently had their first child, and I don't know if he's looking to take a job right away, but no question it will happen soon. He would like to be a head coach, but he also enjoys coaching with Matta and he might want to stick around for this class first. He's also compensated well, from what I understand, so that doesn't hurt.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:45:12 PM)
Even with the Thad Five coming in next year, do you agree that this year's team will have the better overall record? It will be tough to replace all that experience.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:47:20 PM)
Experience is nice, and early in the season it will show from lacking it in some areas, but I think in this particular case it's going to be a little overrated. Consider that as of this moment, Terence Dials is the only player on Ohio State that has ever played in the NCAA Tournament. Next year, Ron Lewis and Jamar Butler will both have that experience, whereas Dials is the only one this season. Then you consider that Sylvester's biggest problem is making poor decisions - much like freshmen would do...

(Feb 22, 2006 1:48:17 PM)
So for that reason, I see the team next year losing some early games, especially with a tougher schedule. But they will have arguably the top PG and top C in the conference - the two most important positions, and some of these freshmen won't be like typical freshmen because they are real good and have played together a lot. There will be a transition period, but by season's end, I don't see that being a factor.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:48:43 PM)
Kyle - can we get a prediction about the score of tonights game with the injury sustained by MSU?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:49:51 PM)
If Sylvester plays, I see Ohio State having a slight advantage with regards to the matchups since Matt Trannon is sidelined, but the homecourt advantage will probably wipe out that advantage, meaning it's a toss-up. As of now, if Sylvester plays, I see Michigan State having a tough game on their hands, but I still think a 2-5 point victory is in order for the home team.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:50:08 PM)
Are Greg Oden and Daequan Cook two year players if they don't win it all their first year? Are Conley and Lighty long-term Buckeyes?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:50:58 PM)
I think two years is the realistic expectation for both Oden and Cook. Oden would be more likely to stay longer than Cook simply because he's a kid that loves school and wants his degree. If Cook stayed longer, it's probably because of draft status. Conley and Lighty will both be around 3 or 4 years probably.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:51:03 PM)
why is Prosser out of the running for the UC job now?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:52:09 PM)
The official, unofficial reason being given in private circles is because of his contract, and the large buyout, etc. However, I think the real reason is because of Wake's poor performance and UC not wanting to pay dearly for a coach who had such a bad season. After all, UC officials have known for months of his contract status and it didn't stop from having flirtations through messengers.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:52:15 PM)
If Cook gets in the McD game then what are the chances we see him in thier dunk contest? Or maybe thier 3 point contest?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:52:57 PM)
Cook is in the game, and I have no problems now spilling those beans if there were any doubt. I see him being in the dunk contest. I'm not sure about the 3-point contest, although he's good enough to compete in it.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:53:14 PM)
I've been reading that Oden is becoming good at and confident in shooting 15-17 ft. jump shots. It sounds like his offensive game is not as limited as some would have you believe.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:53:36 PM)
ToMac makes mention of Oden's offensive game and it not being as limited as people make it out to be.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:54:56 PM)
Oden has some real skill offensively, and he's got a wide variety of shots that he can make. My biggest criticism might just be that he still doesn't go to these moves and different shot types often enough. I know he has a miniature hook shot that he can knock down, but I haven't seen it very often from him. He can also take the 15-foot jumper, but rarely does. It's probably a matter of confidence with him. If he gets it, I pity the rest of the country.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:55:08 PM)
I ask a question about him every chat, so here I go again...Anything new on Ben Martin?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:55:27 PM)
lol well in sticking with the theme... nothing new. Still Notre Dame and Ohio State ;)

(Feb 22, 2006 1:55:44 PM)
How do you see the regular season ending out ... i mean W/L the rest of the way and in the BTT as well ... and in addition to that where would that leave OSU ranked in the bracket?

(Feb 22, 2006 1:57:21 PM)
I think Ohio State loses tonight, finishes 11-5 in the Big Ten and will probably be the No. 3 seed. I'm thinking Michigan State will be in the 3-way tie with Iowa and Ohio State. Michigan State would be the No. 1, Iowa No. 2 and Ohio State No. 3. On a neutral floor in that set up, I could see Ohio State meeting the Spartans in the Big Ten Tournament finals. But that's getting way ahead of ourselves.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:57:41 PM)
From the couple of games I've seen of Oden so far, my main complaint is that he is not aggressive enough. There have been many times where he could throw it down, but he chooses to lay it in or bank it and he misses. I think he will be HUGE on the defensive side of the ball, and the offense will just come to him.

(Feb 22, 2006 1:58:23 PM)
That's a valid complaint. Sometimes he's very aggressive, and sometimes he's passive. As I said earlier, I think it's a confidence issue still. That's why when he says \"I'm not good enough for the NBA\"... I think he means it

(Feb 22, 2006 1:58:42 PM)
I've got time for about two or three more questions before I wrap up

(Feb 22, 2006 1:59:11 PM)
I have not seen much of Cook, is he much better than Michael Redd at the same stage?

(Feb 22, 2006 2:00:01 PM)
Yes. Redd was a terrific scorer, but coming out of high school, he was mostly a scorer and that was it. Cook is the complete package. He's a better defender than Redd was at that point. He's a good shooter, he can penetrate, he's a terrific passer and he's very good off the dribble.

(Feb 22, 2006 2:00:26 PM)
Do you see Kurt Huelsman doing much at UD? Is Chris Wright a lock at UD?

(Feb 22, 2006 2:01:17 PM)
I like Huelsman if he develops in a flex type of offense. I know some coaches see him as possibly a Mike Wilkinson type. But given what Dayton does, I don't know how successful he will be there. Wright is solid with Dayton, yes.

(Feb 22, 2006 2:01:39 PM)
Since you've seen all these guys. How sick is a starting lineup in 4 years that includes Conley, Diebler, Lighty, Kosta, and Lauderdale, wiith Walter and Mullens off the bench?

(Feb 22, 2006 2:02:52 PM)
If most of these guys project like we assume they will, that's a very good lineup. It's really more amazing to think you could lose guys like Oden, Cook and Jamar Butler, and still end up with that lineup the year after, isn't it? That's not even counting guys (potentially) like Rakim Sanders or Dante Jackson and then Delvon Roe and/or William Buford

(Feb 22, 2006 2:03:55 PM)
Concerning the Butler vs Conley debate, since they are both strong defenders with well rounded games, don't you think that they will be on the floor together a good bit.

(Feb 22, 2006 2:05:16 PM)
There will certainly be times where that happens. The thing I worry about in that scenario is size. Both of these guys are no more than 6-1. I tend to think in most cases, when they are on the floor at the same time it's to give Cook or Lewis a rest. But they both are good enough offensively and great defensively that they will see the floor together sometimes.

(Feb 22, 2006 2:06:11 PM)
Well, that wraps it up for me today. Enjoy the game tonight. We'll be back with a chat again next Tuesday (probably evening). Until then, thanks for joining me and everyone have a great afternoon!

(Feb 22, 2006 2:06:33 PM)
Take care everybody!
