Hello everyone...start firing away on this Thursday evening chat session.
Royal Flush47 (Feb 23, 2006 9:12:09 PM)
Big Ten champs in Football, Mens BBALL, Womens BBALL!!! The first Big 10 team to accomplish that feat.!!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:12:09 PM)
And that's pretty much all that matters Royal Flush...no offense to any of the other sports at all but OSU is at the very top of all the signature sports. Now the challenge is to keep it there. Smile!
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 9:12:42 PM)
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:12:42 PM)
Hi Kleintime...thanks for joining the chat!
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 9:14:56 PM)
I know everyone's been asking, but one more time: Who are the starting LBs next year!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:14:56 PM)
Hi BuckeyeinCA...I have to go with Freeman, D'Andrea and I'm going to say John Kerr because he's a veteran. I like Curtis Terry a lot and Homan is a big favorite of mine. Of course Laurinaitis is capable and Hoobler and the list goes on.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:17:10 PM)
I spoke with Thaddeus Gibson tonight and he confirmed his 20 score on his ACT test. He told me he just had finished basketball practice on Wednesday when his basketball coach came into the locker room as Gibson was preparing to take his shower and held 2-0 up. Gibson thought he was going to have to do 20 pushups or something from practice and his coach told him he just heard that he scored a 20 on his ACT. Gibson said his legs almost went out from under him. Great news. He says he's all cleared to go now.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:17:46 PM)
He also said he may ride down to Columbus tomorrow with Ray Small for the Big 33 presser but he wasn't yet sure at this time.
Poz79 (Feb 23, 2006 9:18:45 PM)
Hi Gary. Some posts on the mesage board say things look good with Thad Gibson's test score. Any word on how Ray Small's looking?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:18:45 PM)
I confirmed it wiht him Poz...I didn't speak with Small yet. I may try to reach him on my speed dial while we are chatting.
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 9:20:17 PM)
Hey Gary, Whats the word with Donnie Evege ... anything new? I thought he was going to pull the trigger
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:20:17 PM)
I've spoken with his coach Jay Minton recently, who I got to know pretty well when Marcus Freeman was playing there and he thinks the chances are excellent of commitment eventually, but he's just not sure when.
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 9:22:07 PM)
Howdy. Is there any truth to the two RBs transferring rumor?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:22:07 PM)
Hi hear rumors all the time...some I can pass along while others I can't. There's nothing imminent that I'm aware of although I'm sure that challenges have been issued to compete and compete hard or look elsewhere.
buckeroo (Feb 23, 2006 9:24:45 PM)
Gary who is next to commit after Evege?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:24:45 PM)
I'm sure they would welcome Ogelsby or Martin any time if they so desired but I don't see that happening any time soon. I really don't know who might pull the trigger next other than Evege. I'm sure I'll have a chance to talk to a few more prospects who might be candidates next week at the Scout.com in Pittsburgh.
ODOGG45 (Feb 23, 2006 9:27:14 PM)
Hey Gary, what's the latest on the ville??? What's the latest on Darius Hiley? How many tarblooders do you think Tressel is interested in and how is Ted Sr. doing?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:27:14 PM)
Hi ODOGG45...nothing really new at the ville other than the the football players who transferred in for track season. Some more are likely to follow at the end of the school year. They may add to the talent pool that's already there. Remember the name Chris Young, he's the one Ginn Sr. has referred to as his Chris Wells for next year. Right now it's Hines and possibly Jefferson who are the main prospects next year. Right now that is!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:28:45 PM)
Don't know about Hiley but I'll always remember how fondly Ginn talked about Superman at one time years ago, even more so than Whitner. It's amazing how those two paths have gone in such opposite directions now. It's quite sad actually.
buckmark (Feb 23, 2006 9:30:34 PM)
What football players are going to be running with the outdoor track team this spring
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:30:34 PM)
Hi buckmark...I don't really know for sure but I heard that TGII and Brian Hartline were 2 of them. I know there was at least another one but the name escapes me at this time. I have no track information to share at this time.
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 9:33:02 PM)
Per si.com, Texas has named McCoy their starting qb ... good move given they brought in snead who looked the part in the AAA game?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:33:03 PM)
Boy I liked Snead more than Mustain down in San Antonio even though Mustain was getting most of the pub down there. I think Snead is going to be a good one, him and that receiver that he threw a TD to in the AA game. They must be going with the more experienced guy to start the season. I thought Snead carried himself well in San Antonio in the limited amount of time I saw him.
buckmark (Feb 23, 2006 9:36:13 PM)
Gary, What timtable would you see for commits this year? How many might we see during the summer, how many will we still be waiting on come next January, etc?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:36:13 PM)
Buckmark, it seems like more and more of the kids want to commit before the season starts. They want to get it out of the way and concentrate on their senior year and also protect themselves in case of injury. I think the big timers will continue to take it down to the wire or late December but I hope to see more kids do it prior to the start of the season. Of course the Glenville kids will continue to take it down to the wire. What many of us don't understand is that the younger kids at Glenville are so inspired by seeing the recruiters come into their school throughout the whole process so it's a good thing they have going at Glenville.
Guest (Feb 23, 2006 9:36:54 PM)
I cant believe Thad is going to win B10 this year!!!!....Go Bucks!!!!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:36:54 PM)
My sentiments the same nhbkye!
yooperbuck (Feb 23, 2006 9:39:57 PM)
Hi Gary. Who do you think we ultimately end up with in the qb recruit race next year? Belden or Smith or would it be possible both? Or neither?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:39:57 PM)
If I had to pick between the two yooperbuck right now I would say Belton. I think Chris Smith, who I like a whole lot, is going to fine genuine love at other places and it's going to make it easy for him to look elsewhere. I think Belton, more or less, already has Ohio State as his final destination if it works out that way. But as Duane and others have pointed out, there are a few other really good QBs in Ohio this year.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:42:44 PM)
On Friday, I'm going to go check out Gardner and his top receiver Ifft from Dover. I'm really intrigued by the numbers they posted last year so I have to go look for myself. The father, Dan Ifft, the head coach at Dover is from my neck of the woods at Fitch and he told me today that they throw the ball every down. I look forward to meeting both of those two talented players on Friday to see how they rate with the look test.
buckmark (Feb 23, 2006 9:43:45 PM)
Gary, I asked about which footballers may be running track this spring...not sure you got it.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:43:45 PM)
Did I address this or did I get it wrong. I think that TGII and Hartline are running track and I think there's at least one other maybe two...but I'm not certain at this time. Sorry buck!
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 9:46:12 PM)
I am trying to figure this out. From all accounts that I have read Williams and Worthington redshirted this past year ... but could still sit out next year and recieve a free medical year??? meaning that they both could miss two years and start with redshirted freshmen eligibility in 07? Is that correct or am I totally losing it?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:46:12 PM)
Steve is always the technical guy kleintime...my uneducated guess would be that if they took a medical redshirt this year, which they would apply for in their sixth year if they wanted it, they could have six years to play four. I'm guessing they will be redshirt freshmen next year but could still possibly have a sixth year on the back end. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I was wrong on the D'Andrea injury situation so I could be just as wrong here.
Poz79 (Feb 23, 2006 9:50:52 PM)
Where do you put Wooldridge if you ranked the 07 RBs in Ohio?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:50:52 PM)
Hi Poz...I'm probably one of the very few who like both Mabin and Wooldridge and Herron. I just look at football players who make plays, regardless of size, and these three guys are all right there in my book. They may all be similar in style but they'll all have monster years numbers-wise barring injury. I think Morgan Williams is near the top, so is Simpson from down South and so is William Johnson if he's still around. I'm sure there are others as well. But I'll put Wooldridge right up there near the top 5.
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 9:52:28 PM)
Out of all the O-line prospects out there I get a real good feeling about Blankenship. Could see him growing into a massive gaurd and seems to be high on OSU. Any opinions of this player?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:52:28 PM)
I'm with you kleintime...I hope he's at the scout combine next saturday. Bob Lichtenfels is doing a great job getting kids to attend that combine so I'm guessing I'll have my first chance to eyeball Blankenship. I have no real basis to judge him on at this time. I think it's a good match and maybe he could be a precamp commitment.
suedat (Feb 23, 2006 9:54:55 PM)
Hi Gary... Who would you say are the three most improved players from last year's team?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:54:55 PM)
Hi suedat. I can't say enough about Doug Datish. I've been hard on him up until about the middle of this season but he's won me over. I think David Patterson is just going to be lights out. I'm also hearing from people that know that Joel Penton is really beginning to step to the plate. That's a good thing for the defensive line. I don't know if I answered your question correctly or not though.
Guest (Feb 23, 2006 9:56:39 PM)
There's a lot of hype about Andre Amos, but Jenkins was the one who was put into action as a freshman. How much of the hype is warranted? And will Malcolm live up to his own hype?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:56:39 PM)
Hi BuckeyeinCA... Amos was one kid who clearly stood out to me in both all-star games last summer so I'm into him in a big way. I have no fears if he trots out there opposite Jenkins next year, even though I firmly believe TGII should be the guy. Have I ever mentioned that in a chat before??? Smile! I think Amos is going to be a good corner for a couple of years at OSU.
buckmark (Feb 23, 2006 9:57:56 PM)
How do transfers and kids leaving early affect the new NCAA apr (?) numbers?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 9:57:56 PM)
Buck...I don't want to sound like I'm dodging the question, because I am, but I'm sure Steve knows all those formulas and you can ask him during his chat tomorrow. Sorry.
Guest (Feb 23, 2006 10:02:14 PM)
A Colerain poster on another site claims OSU is not Eugene Clifford's top choice, eventhough we have yet to offer! Are you hearing the same thing? How are we going to do this recruiting season down in Cincinnati?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:02:14 PM)
I've heard good and bad things with Clifford but mostly good to be honest with you. I think the Cincinnati area could be really bountiful this year and I hope Ohio State is right there. I like Caleb Lipsey from Sycamore, the linebacker from Moeller - Brian Lane, and the offensive lineman from LaSalle Garrett Celek. I also like Vince Harris from LaSalle but I believe Duane says he needs to go a ways in the class room. I'm sure there are many others in Cincy as well. Some guy named Martin from LaSalle is pretty good too. Smile!
Guest (Feb 23, 2006 10:04:57 PM)
Gary - is MO C on your speed dial still?? I dont know if you heard the news but he kind of F'd up again.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:04:57 PM)
Oh Reecie...it's so sad ODOGG45. Reecie was my guy. Now it's Beanie's turn. He's everything Reecie never was. Those are my all-time running backs in high school. Chris Wells one and Maurice Clarett two.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:05:31 PM)
Looks like it's going to be a quick chat tonight. Unless you have any more questions I'm all caught up.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:06:16 PM)
I'm not sure if Sasha Cohen has skated yet or not so if you know what she did please don't tell me. It's the Olympics! You got to love Sasha!
Anotherbuck (Feb 23, 2006 10:08:10 PM)
Gary, I just heard that you confirmed Thaddeus Gibson scored 20 in ACT. That is great news. But I am concerned that NCAA Clearinghouse might want him to retake it because of the big jump. Years ago, Terry Pogue could not come to Ohio State because of that. What do you think?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:08:10 PM)
I guess that would be okay Anotherbuck. Thaddeus had told me that he thought he would do well and he did. He was so happy when I spoke to him tonight because he said he even made it with room to spare. If for some reason he should have to take it again...I'm sure he'll do well again.
suedat (Feb 23, 2006 10:12:28 PM)
Gary... I have been a member of Bucknuts for years but this is my first chat. Of course I loved your answer of who you felt were the most improved players. Are you from Mahoning County? Anyone in this area look promising for OSU?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:12:28 PM)
Yes I am and thanks for participating in the chat for the first time. Welcome. I live in Boardman, grew up on the south side of Youngstown and went to Woodrow Wilson. I talked to Sean Bakers father tonight from Canfield and as Duane reported on the Hot News, Sean got his first offer from Kent State today. Marcus O'Hara is a big lineman from Hubbard who will get some looks. I like Nathan Sharp from West Branch, a great wrestler, and not many people talk about him. Rayen has a very good wide receiver who is way under the radar. Mooney has a big offensive lineman who was all state last year, Ismail Kitchen... and Harding is loaded with some good juniors, namely Danny Herron and Sidney Glover.
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 10:14:11 PM)
Whats the game plan vs. Texas?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:14:11 PM)
Just win baby! It will really be a culture shock for me this year to watch JT's offense sprint out of the gate from week one and never look back. They have to be the most prolific machine to ever play in the Horseshoe on offense next year...EVER. They have to be. Offense will have to give the D time to settle in.
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 10:17:18 PM)
Who are the two safeties next year? And how has Jamario been progressing?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:17:18 PM)
I have no inside information at this time but I'm going to go with J.O. and Brandon Mitchell to start. Someone with game experience has to be back there. I think Nick Patterson and Anderson Russell could surprise people this year in a good way. There will be young athletes every where back there so Mitchell will eventually make way for one of them and become the nickel guy...a role we know he's more than capable of filling. J.O. will be a beast no question once he learns enough to be dangerous. The mental challenge will be his biggest challenge.
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 10:21:06 PM)
You said that you believe TGII should be in the backfield. Was that a joke? And if it wasn't... Could it still happen?? And on the topic of TGII, will he ever throw the ball in his career at tOSU? He was supposed to throw it at the Alamo Bowl, wasn't he?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:21:06 PM)
I think TGII should do everything including sell popcorn in the shoe next year. I firmly believe that he should play cornerback, but I'm in the minority there. He's a wonderful defensive player...trust me. I think he should get direct snaps on offense. TGII could be more productive potentially than Reggie Bush...he's a legitimate defender.
BigBrutus (Feb 23, 2006 10:22:24 PM)
Gary: There has been a pretty heated thread on the premium board regarding which jersey numbers the 2006 Buckeyes will be wearing. Can you please help stop the madness by asking Thad Gibson, Ray Small, etc., tomorrow when you see them at the Big 33 news conference? Thanks.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:22:24 PM)
Hi Brutus...I won't see them tomorrow but I'm sure Steve or Dave will. They'll be asked. I talked to Gibson tonight and didn't ask him and I never did call Small tonight. I haven't taken my hands off the keys yet.
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 10:23:37 PM)
I know you want to get to the Olympics, so this will be my last question: Who takes Holmes' position next year? Who makes our 4 WR sets?
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:23:37 PM)
Hall, TGII, Gonzo and Dukes. Then Hartline and Robiskie. I think Small redshirts but he could be another slot guy. I hear Donald Washington may surprise people. I can't wait for Spring ball.
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:24:38 PM)
I'm going to call it a night and catch the Olympics now or what's left of them. I want to thank those of you who took the time to chat with me tonight especially suedat who is checking in for the first time. And thanks to those of you who took the time to read it at a later time. Have a great weekend. Go Bucks!
BuckeyeinCA (Feb 23, 2006 10:24:53 PM)
Thanks, Gary. You do a great job!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:24:53 PM)
Thank you and I appreciate the kind words!
kleintime16 (Feb 23, 2006 10:25:19 PM)
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:25:19 PM)
You're surely welcome Klein...thank you!
suedat (Feb 23, 2006 10:25:54 PM)
Thanks Gary! I really enjoyed it!
GaryHousteau (Feb 23, 2006 10:25:54 PM)
I appreciate the compliment! I'm glad you enjoyed it suedat.
