Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 2:28:53 PM)
Hi Duane

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:28:59 PM)
Made it.

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:03 PM)
Hey Duane

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:07 PM)
Lets roll.

MrBucknuts (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:12 PM)
You got to plug it in, man...

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:14 PM)

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:24 PM)
Good to see everybody.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:29:38 PM)
any hot news to update us on duane?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:30:33 PM)
Not alot going on. Camps are starting this weekend and then the info will start coming in.

MrBucknuts (Jun 13, 2002 2:30:38 PM)
Duane: Talk to any out-of-state kids lately?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:31:17 PM)
I spoke to Wesley Jefferson a few days ago. He is the top LB in the country and some would argue the top player. The Buckeyes have a real shot at him.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:31:38 PM)
Tell us about him please

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:32:16 PM)
6-2, 230, 4.55. Had over 130 tackles last year. Can play inside or outside.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:32:42 PM)
He wants to play where football is king. He is from Maryland.

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 2:32:31 PM)
Duane do you think McGlynn is really a "tressel" recruit? I heard there is a reason didn't qualify last year

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:33:42 PM)
McGlynn is just fine. There are no attitude problems. Trust me on this. It was a snafu something like what tripped up Ursuline last year.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:34:33 PM)
McGlynn didn't really say what he was going to do. There is a rule that they cannot offer them at camp. They have to wait until the get back home. It was just instituted.

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 2:34:41 PM)
I'm not talking attitude, I know a teacher at Austintown and they said he really has academic problems

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:36:05 PM)
McGlynn is eligible to play baseball. I will check on his academics.

HangOnSloopy (Jun 13, 2002 2:33:30 PM)
Lemming mentioned a OSU with a lot of the kids from Texas. Do you see any of them coming up our way?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:35:02 PM)
I have not heard anything about the Buckeyes being in on alot of Texas players.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:32:49 PM)
duane your prefernce of order in offering on o line and who do you expect to commit do you believe they will do like last year and call them into tress's office and offer en mass?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:37:12 PM)
McGlynn is probably going to be # 1 coming out of camps if he shows like he is expected to show. I can't confirm whether Pribula will be there. Maizel, Hall and Henderson will be.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:37:28 PM)
Duane, where do you think OSU stands now in making a decision on offering Quinn and thie offer to Boekman. I get the feeling the Boekman is back peddling a little bit now.

Duane (ID=13) (Jun 13, 2002 2:38:24 PM)
I agree with you on Boeckman. I am wondering if he is looking to see if Zwick redshirts.

Duane (ID=13) (Jun 13, 2002 2:39:48 PM)
If Zwick doesn't redshirt Boeckman could give himself 2 years as the starter.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:40:22 PM)
He couldn't really expect more than 3.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:40:16 PM)
duane who gets an offer tribble or the other kid from cincy thatcther[sic]

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:41:40 PM)
As it stands right now I suspect Tribble gets an offer first. He has a lot more offers than Thatcher. Thatcher's lack of offers is a real mystery. He is a fine athlete and a really quality kid. The lack of reps at his college position is obviously killing him.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:41:51 PM)
Do you see an offer for Quinn then, if Boeckman holds off much longer on a decision

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:42:10 PM)
or is Boeckman pretty much set in stone

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:43:10 PM)
and Quinn doesn't get an offer until Boeckman opts out

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:43:10 PM)
I got into this on the board yesterday or the day before. I think if Quinn shows at camp and shows a willingness to verbal they could go to Boeckman and say they need an answer. I have not heard that will happen but I think it could.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:43:32 PM)
Quinn has said he will take his time

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:42:07 PM)
duane could you envision a scenario that tress calls them both and says first to commit get's in?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:44:33 PM)
No way does Tressel do it that directly. That is tacky and would put off all concerned. he would talk to them individually and privately.

nbuck  (Jun 13, 2002 2:45:21 PM)
that's what i meant over the phone

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:44:10 PM)
is the edward's kid out of cincy the main de focus now ?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:45:45 PM)
I think Edwards is a really hot commodity right now. I think Patterson is # 1 at either DT or DE but Edwards would be right there at # 2 with Crable.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:45:50 PM)
I get the impression that the kid's that OSU is looking at are moving slower in their decision process this year. Is that due to OSU not blitzing all out due to the limited scholarships?

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:46:07 PM)
to get verbals?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:47:32 PM)
I think the lack of verbals is really just a personal matter. Some kids want to look around and some want to have fun before they make a decision. I have found that others really are not up to speed about what they want to do and are just getting it into gear. Pitcock was like that last year. Michael Bush has only visited instate Louisville and Kentucky.

MrBucknuts (Jun 13, 2002 2:46:12 PM)
What happened to Sian Cotton in your mix?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:48:24 PM)
Cotton is a DT. He is still top 10 but Patterson is really a special player.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 2:47:13 PM)
I just entered the room so sorry if this question has already been asked, but how many OL do you see Tress taking?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:48:01 PM)
I have been told 2 OLs but I think if someone really impresses it could be 3.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:49:06 PM)
Patterson is very much like Warren Sapp.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:49:32 PM)
that is very high praise Duane

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:50:06 PM)
This kid is a high motor high skill highly motivated football playing maniac.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:49:41 PM)
duane how many db's taken in this class?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:50:41 PM)
I think they take 2-3 DBs. That is why I think we still could see an offer to Tribble or Thatcher.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 2:51:53 PM)
2 or 3, explain? They have Gonzalez, plus they want Hiley and Whitner, and Burgess. W/ the glut of good DB's in Ohio this year, why not load up w/ 4-5

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:54:40 PM)
There is not enough scholies to load up. The talent level is very high but they loaded up last year numberswise. I would not have been so aggressive with last years class knowing what was in this one. I would have only offered 3 of the DBs that were brought in.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:50:28 PM)
is he still osu's to lose?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:50:58 PM)
Patterson is Ohio States to lose. He really likes Jim Tressel.

Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 2:51:35 PM)
Any news on Dareus Hiley?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:52:05 PM)
Hiley is working hard on his grades. He is up to a 2.5-2.6 core.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:51:38 PM)
Patterson is camping. How many players with that many offers are camping??? I asked him about it. He sees it as another opportunity to get better.

DiR  (Jun 13, 2002 2:51:42 PM)
How is Luke Fickell being received out on the recruiting front?

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:52:15 PM)
Burgess will probably be listed as LB by the end of recruiting

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:53:08 PM)
Burgess is an LB all the way. I am not convinced Gonzalez is a corner. Besides, they know they can play him at either so if he is not a WR he could fall into the athlete category. So could Hiley.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:53:18 PM)
if they lose either patterson or cotton who else could be in the mix for dt?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:55:29 PM)
Maupin and Larkin are the obvious choices for DT. Both are physical specimens. I think with 25 to offer they already would have been.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 2:53:43 PM)
What is Tress' stance on recruiting JUCO's?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:56:04 PM)
So far JT has not looked at the JUCO ranks. I think that says all need be said about his stance on JUCOs.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 2:56:05 PM)
Do you see any recruit "pulling" a Zwick and helping to recruit other recruits this year?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:57:10 PM)
Irizarry and Patterson are very charismatic. So is Ty Hall. I could see them working the phones. Dan Henderson is too.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 2:56:43 PM)
how many verbal do you expect by early july?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:57:56 PM)
This years crop is not looking to make early verbals. I could see Irizarry and Patterson but don't expect it. Not by July.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 2:58:40 PM)
There is too much emphasis on the early verbals. Too much is read into players not making early verbals. That is where the problem is.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 2:58:41 PM)
I bet we don't see anymore verbals till the end of July at the earliest, as cautious as this crowd seems,

DiR  (Jun 13, 2002 2:58:06 PM)
Duane, how do these players all get each other's phone numbers when they don't all camp or visit together. Do they ask you for them occasionally?

Duane  (Jun 13, 2002 2:59:22 PM)
I have never had a player ask me for a number. They see each other all the time at unofficial visits and camps and at other sporting events over the years.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 2:58:52 PM)
W/ Coach Spencer now focused on recruiting Georgia, what kids do you see OSU targeting in the Peach state

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:00:24 PM)
Not up to speed yet on Georgia. Jason Evans is one kid that has over 30 offers who said he would probably visit Ohio State. He has been before and lived in Ohio until he was about 9 years old.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:01:06 PM)
Evans was here for the NW game under the lights. He said it felt like home.

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 2:59:12 PM)
JT must just be listening to Lemming not taking early verbals

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:00:51 PM)
it seemed brady is going to wait out ohio state do you think tresss could take 2 qb this year and only 1 next year?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:01:47 PM)
I don't see there being enough scholies for 2 QBS this year. If there is room for 2 QBs then I would use it on another OL instead.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:02:09 PM)
South FL has been fertile ground lately for OSU, what are the chances that it continues in this class? Any prospects we have a real shot at?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:02:42 PM)
Not any players yet that I am aware of. I am gearing up for the national players now.

Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 3:03:03 PM)
I think Tavares Gooden (LB from Nate Salley's HS - Ft. Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas) is interested and OSU has offered, but I haven't seen anyone super-interested in OSU from FL yet

Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 3:03:09 PM)
Gooden's a top 100 recruit

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:03:26 PM)
Gooden never leaves Florida.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:03:34 PM)
do you think quinn pitcock will redshirt now with his operation

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:04:42 PM)
I think it has as much to do with the talent and depth at DT as it does with his surgery. I knwo he is going to try and make it back for the Big 33. That will give a good indication of his recovery if he can even make it to play let alone how good he plays.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:04:00 PM)
I was surprised by the number of OSU offers that Lemming had in his top 100 players. Are there really that many offers out there right now?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:05:20 PM)
I have not seen the list so I can't really say. I saw a list of his top 100 but the one I saw didn't have who had offered.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:05:16 PM)
In your estimation who are the 3 players in OH this year that would make the biggest impact as a Freshman

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:05:39 PM)
You mean incoming players or seniors to be?

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:05:47 PM)
Seniors to be

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:07:22 PM)
Immediate impact players in this class would be Burgess, Hiley, Whitner and Irizarry. They are physically ready to play and bring special skills to the table.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:06:13 PM)
By the way, there has been a change. The incoming players can workout with the team as soon as they pass a physical this year.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:08:15 PM)
Patterson has the skills and if he plays DE he would be ready to play but if he slides down to DT I think he needs a year in the weightroom.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:06:07 PM)
which of the defensive line recruits from last year might be asked to move to oline?

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:06:09 PM)
speaking of all star games, 1460 is advertising Zwick for the game at Crew stadium. i thought he was sitting out all of the all-star games. Is he playing?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:06:24 PM)
Zwick is playing.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:08:15 PM)
Will Tress start getting the top kids from PA. We seem to be out of the loop in PA

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:09:11 PM)
I think eventually he will get into western PA but with last years talent and this years I think the focus will be on Ohio players. There is little need to leave the state with this years talent.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:09:32 PM)
As there was with last years.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:09:32 PM)
is it true the rumor's that louis is holding off verballing to give his teamates more time to be noticed or has notre dame really jumbled thing's up for him?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:10:21 PM)
I am sure it started out as a chance to get attention for his teammates but Notre Dame did get his attention. I still believe he will be a Buckeye.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:11:12 PM)
Ohio fans are a bit jaded with recruiting. They hear about these kids from other states and forget how many schools are here trying to get Ohio players.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:10:17 PM)
People initially freaked out when Tressel commented that he would like to have 80% of the recruits be from Ohio every year. 1/2 through year 2, it seems he is on par with that thought/

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:10:37 PM)
What is the latest on Smith and Morris making the grades to play this fall

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:11:31 PM)
Nothing new on Smith and Morris. I know Smith took the test again recently.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:12:04 PM)
Ohio is year in and year out one of the top 5 states for players.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:13:07 PM)
is daruis and donte going to be a package deal and does that bode well for ohio state having mr smith already here

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:14:49 PM)
I don't see them as a package deal. I think both will make their decisions on their own. Ted Ginn is a big JT fan and his kids love him. He will help them make their decisions.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:13:19 PM)
Anyone from MI that we really want

Mike68 (ID=16) (Jun 13, 2002 3:14:40 PM)
Counting potential academic casualties & transfers, what is the max # of scholarships we can take this year

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:15:32 PM)
We can't add transfers and academic casualties right now. There is no word on either. Right now it is 12.

nbuck (Jun 13, 2002 3:15:52 PM)
duane have you ever spoken with a coach inside ohio that is skeptical about tressel or is this really the right person at the right time for ohio state?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:16:58 PM)
The coaches are so much in coach Tressels camp that the MSU coaches offered Turner and Williams early because they said that is the only way they have a chance to get their foot in the door.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:17:06 PM)
12? Recruiting could be over before we know it. Doesn't this pressure kids to commit NOW or be left out

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:18:05 PM)
I think we are getting a reverse effect Mike68. Is OSU pressuring as hard for committs this year as last?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:18:07 PM)
You bring up a good point. Once players start to verbal you could see the ones who are heavy Buckeye leans realizing they can't take their time. 2 or 3, maybe 4 roll in I think we could see this class full in no time.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:18:22 PM)
Breakdown by position the # of scholies that we'll take this year

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 3:18:42 PM)
save 1 for Jefferson and Hiley

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:20:12 PM)
It is hard to do that because so many of these players can play more than one position. Hiley, Frost and Gonzalez could all be included in 2 positions. I can see no backs coming in. I don't see a safety in this class.

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:19:13 PM)
Duane, Hope this hasn't been asked before, but have the coaches talked to T. Boekmann about a quicker decision because of the Quinn B. situation?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:21:43 PM)
Not yet but I think a good camp showing by Quinn could put Ohio State in the position of asking Boeckman for a decision but that decision would also have to include a clear statement by Quinn that he would verbal right away.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:21:04 PM)
Do you see Tress holding back 1 scholarship for use on a major national player that we could get late in the process (a la Morris)

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:22:24 PM)
He did last year. If he has what he sees as his needs basically filled and he is hearing the right things from a national star I could see that happening.

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:22:25 PM)
Thanks Duane!

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:22:28 PM)
Do you see Quinn verballing immediately if he is offered

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:23:10 PM)
No. Quinn has said he is not in a hurry but also said if Ohio State offered they would be at the top of his list. We will see.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:23:24 PM)
What things are recruits saying about Tress that really sets him apart from the rest

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:24:10 PM)
Honesty, integrity and a commitment to their success off the field. Most just like the man.

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:24:29 PM)
Duane, the other day you compared Boeckman and Quinn being like a choice between Montana and Elway. Are you saying that OSU can't go wrong with either one? Of course no one is a sure bet.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:25:08 PM)
That is what I am saying. Both are really nice QBs with the same basic tools.

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:24:52 PM)
When is the special camp date ...the one in debate lately... elite camp??

MrBucknuts (Jun 13, 2002 3:25:26 PM)
Senior advantage camp is the 27th, I believe...

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:25:28 PM)
26th and 27th

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:25:42 PM)
Bowden wins over the Mama's in recruiting and the kids usually go were Mom wants them to. Do you see this becoming the case w/ Tress

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:26:43 PM)
You better believe it. I won't even try to give a number for the players whose parents made the difference in their college choice.

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:26:07 PM)
Is the camp open to the public to observe?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:27:11 PM)
To my knowledge camp is not open to the public.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:26:30 PM)
How many verbals do you see coming out of that camp?

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:27:02 PM)
What would you estimate Tressel's "Closing Percentage" to be. You know, the ability to seal the deal with a recruit who may be undecided.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:28:18 PM)
I wouldn't want to try and put a number on it but when JT is sitting in the living room he can take on the 900 lb gorillas of college football recruiting and win more than his share.

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:27:39 PM)
Thanks again, DL!

DiR (Jun 13, 2002 3:28:35 PM)
good enough....thanks for your time today

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 3:28:47 PM)
Great chat as always Duane

HangOnSloopy (Jun 13, 2002 3:29:02 PM)
Thanks Duane.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:29:24 PM)
Glad to be here. Before I go, is there a day when you would prefer to have the chats?

Mike68  (Jun 13, 2002 3:29:43 PM)

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 3:29:55 PM)
any day but friday\

Hoosier Buck (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:09 PM)
anytime is ok

HangOnSloopy (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:45 PM)
I'm out west, so 10pm ET is best for me.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:50 PM)
We are trying to find a time when most of the club members would be here.

Mike68 (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:56 PM)
Thanks Duane. Keep up the good work

HangOnSloopy (Jun 13, 2002 3:31:04 PM)
Actually, any time is fine.

Hoosier Buck  (Jun 13, 2002 3:29:31 PM)
One more ?? Duane , I have been interested in your background. Where can I find this info w/o taking a lot more of your time? Has it been in print on the Bucknuts site b4?

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:09 PM)
We have never printed up a bio of me.

Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 3:30:59 PM)
Duane Long, recruiting guru and virus and Al-Qaeda fighter extraordinaire

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 3:31:12 PM)

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:32:00 PM)
I don't know if I would rather have Bin Laden or this daggone off my computer more. See ya next time.

Hubbard (Jun 13, 2002 3:32:11 PM)
bye duane

Kirk (Jun 13, 2002 3:32:14 PM)
Ok everyone, thanks to Duane for the chat! See you Duane. I will hang out for a few min.

Duane (Jun 13, 2002 3:32:31 PM)
See ya next time.
