Late arriving crowd, I guess

Well, we finally have a few people!
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:01:46 PM)
Maybe (almost) enough to get started haha
82dBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:03:23 PM)
Kyle, please give me the short version of Matta's recruiting (or lack thereof) of Walker and Mayo.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:04:34 PM)
There's really not clean, cut and dried answer on this subject. My thinking is that they have gone under the radar a little bit to remain involved with Mayo (and maybe Walker too), but if so, it's just that - under the radar. I'm sure they would consider taking the two if they really want to go to Ohio State, but I think it's mostly wishful thinking.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:05:06 PM)
Those two will end up with Bob Huggins more than likely, and it's not necessarily that they are adamant about playing for him, but the people involved in the process would probably like them to follow Huggins
lurch (Mar 15, 2006 6:05:15 PM)
Hi Kyle. Does OSU reach the Sweet 16?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:06:36 PM)
If Georgetown is able to get by Northern Iowa (which by the way will not be an easy game, especially if the Jacobsen kid is on for UNI), it won't be easy but I tend to believe Ohio State will get at least that far. If Wis-Milwaukee reaches the S16 against Oklahoma/Florida as I anticipate, I see Ohio State getting at least to the Elite 8. To beat Villanova or Boston College, however, they will need to be on from outside
82dBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:07:15 PM)
Kyle, does anyone think Jim O'Brien will find a D1 job again? Considering he's sued his last 2 employers, his odds of landing a job have to be slim.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:09:09 PM)
I'm not really sure the lawsuits will scare anyone away, but the show cause slapped on him by the NCAA will definitely do that trick. A show cause is (in this case, 5 years) a requirement that any prospective university wishing to hire O'Brien going to the NCAA and appealing why they should hire O'Brien and why the NCAA does not extend possible violations on their university for doing so. It's something that virtually guarantees O'Brien not returning to the college level in the next 5 years
Bellbuck (Mar 15, 2006 6:09:26 PM)
Can OSU sue OB for the $ they have to pay back to the NCAA?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:10:39 PM)
There's really no grounds for being able to countersue him that I know of, but I'm sure anything is possible. A more likely scenario is simply getting a new decision through the appelate process to where they overturn the original decision or lowering the amount to pay him. I doubt though they will try to sue O'Brien for the monies paid back to the NCAA
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:13:06 PM)
It's a slow arriving crowd tonight, so feel free to jump in with questions for anyone that just joined us
finalfourbound (Mar 15, 2006 6:13:33 PM)
Kyle, are the coaches getting concerned about the poor shooting. Do you think Matta may alter the Bucks offense to the get the guys going to the basket? Or, does he stick with the 4 out 1 in and hope for the best?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:14:15 PM)
I think the staff is probably wanting to see them shoot the ball better, but you won't see any drastic changes for the rest of the year by way of philosophy...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:15:18 PM)
I've noticed some small strategic tweaks here and there to take advantage of matchup advantages (such as two guys posting up, runnin a few high-low sets, etc), and I think that kind of thing will continue. But by enlarge, Matta feels like they will start hitting shots
PRO8 (Mar 15, 2006 6:15:29 PM)
What is the latest on the Twigster?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:16:20 PM)
He's probable for later this weekend. If I had to guess, they will rest him against Davidson and then use him Sunday against Georgetown or Northern Iowa. He's doing better, but still a little sore this week. I think he'll be 100 percent by next week's games if they make it through the second round
82dBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:16:34 PM)
Switching to WBB for just a minute, what's your take on Pat Summitt's comments concerning OSU's 1 seed? If I am not mistaken, the Lady Buckeyes finished 28-2 and ranked 2nd, so how can she argue that?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:18:20 PM)
Tennessee played an absolutely brutal schedule and still only lost four games. I think they played something like 20 tournament teams out of 30 games, so I can see where she's coming from. However, two of their four losses were to teams that weren't ranked (Florida and Kentucky) and ultimately Ohio State was 20-0 with the return of Ashley Allen, so I think their No. 1 seed was justified. The only place I differ with how the committee treated the Lady Vols is sticking them in that absolutely sickening region in Cleveland with North Carolina, Rutgers and UCLA. My goodness that was rough.
Guest (Mar 15, 2006 6:18:28 PM)
Do you ever find yourself wanting Butler to look for his shot more? He was brilliant for the first 30 minutes against Iowa and then lost that assertiveness.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:18:41 PM)
lurch asks if I think Butler should look for his shot more...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:19:13 PM)
I've been saying all season that I think he could really make life miserable for opposing teams if he consistently looked to score more often. When he's assertive, Ohio State plays much better.
Bellbuck (Mar 15, 2006 6:19:22 PM)
Does Dante Jackson end up getting an offer? It looks like we'll have an open spot.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:20:18 PM)
There was going to be an open spot for him regardless of what happened with the NCAA or Sylvester Mayes. In the end, it's going to be Ohio State's comfort level with Jackson as a shooter and overall as a player. It seems to be a 50/50 proposition. As of today, I would speculate they will end up offering, but it's anyone's guess.
murphdawg (Mar 15, 2006 6:20:29 PM)
Kyle, if two more guys transfer (Bell, Mayes), I am very concerned with the depth over the next year or so. How do you feel about that.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:21:53 PM)
From a quality standpoint, Ohio State will still have solid depth in terms of the rotation. But from a sheer numbers point of view, they will leave themselves dangerously thin in case of injuries or if one of the freshmen simply don't pan out right away. There's no doubt depth could still be an issue next season. It's too early to speculate on Bell, however. As of now, there's been no talk of him leaving.
82dBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:22:29 PM)
I live in NC, and just got back from a trip to Colorado. I wear OSU gear whenever I travel just to see what response I will get. It's incredible how many people say things like "Go Bucks!" or "O-H" in the airport, at a bar, or just walking down the street. I'm sure you experience the same during your many travels?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:24:26 PM)
I have seen it many places. I saw it one time when I was younger and in Georgia for Christmas break. A friend was wearing an Ohio State sweater and a group of people walking down the street yelled out , "O-H," to which my friend promptly finished. I've heard Thad Matta recount similar stories from being at the airport and having Ohio State fans recognize him. In fact, he's mentioned how impressive that is to him with the nationwide fan support for Ohio State.
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 6:24:36 PM)
Sorry I got in late, not sure if this has been asked, but I have us playing Florida in the sweet 16. How do you think we match up if indeed that happened?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:24:43 PM)
Not directly addressed...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:26:07 PM)
Florida is a very athletic team and in Al Horford and Joakim Noah, they have two strong, athletic interior players that Ohio State could have problems in matching up against. However, Florida sometimes plays a little out of control in the times I've seen them play, and Billy Donovan's teams have a history of underacheiving in big games. My "bracket" has the Gators losing to UW Milwaukee in the second round, however.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:27:22 PM)
I'm all caught up on questions...
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 6:28:05 PM)
Boston College, i think they have a shot at advancing far. I think we could face them if we advance as well. Thoughts on this team in the tournament?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:30:14 PM)
Craig Smith and Jared Dudley are terrific forwards. Those guys are tough down low to contain. I really like their freshman guard Tyrese Rice, as well. I think Boston College is a very solid basketball team, but they really didn't accomplish a whole lot this year outside of beating North Carolina twice and playing Duke tough on two occasions. They are vulnerable to strong backcourts, and when push comes to shove, I actually don't know if they'll make it past Nevada let alone beating Villanova.
murphdawg (Mar 15, 2006 6:30:29 PM)
Kyle, I got in late and I am sure you addressed this, but, when do you have OSU exiting the tourney?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:31:00 PM)
If not the second round, I have Ohio State losing in the Elite 8 or Final Four. If they shoot well, I can see them getting to the Final Four, but if not, they won't make it past Villanova or BC
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 6:31:27 PM)
What is the deal with the Tennessee women's basketball team? Total disrespect for Ohio State. It is not as if we just arrived?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:32:53 PM)
This was brought up earlier, but I think it's a case of Tennessee playing such a rough scehdule (20 games against NCAA Tournament teams) and then not only not getting a No. 1 seed, but being placed in the same region as the best team in the country (North Carolina) as well as the best 3-seed in the tournament (Rutgers). Pat Summit isn't used to her program no longer being given all the love, so she's learning what it's like to be on the "other" side of things for once.
murphdawg (Mar 15, 2006 6:33:01 PM)
Do you think any new names will pop up in recruiting once the season is over? If so, who?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:33:22 PM)
I don't know of anyone in particular yet, but by this time next month, I'm sure we'll be talking about some more guys.
bracket (Mar 15, 2006 6:33:36 PM)
Kyle, what's your final four? I'm dissapointed in TOSU faithful, they are as bad as the media in all they care about is hype; the perennial basketball teams that we associate with the final four. It's OK to be a homer this year, we won the best league in the country. I say we win the whole thing, and that is not far-fetched. Unfortunately people think it is because we have not been a great basketball school recently.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:35:15 PM)
Well, I'm kind of living on the wild side with my Final Four picks. I took two hours to examine tournament trends as well as matchups, and kind of derived at Duke over Iowa in the Elite 8 (I thought long and hard about Syracuse upsetting Duke), Ohio State over Villanova, UCLA over Pittsburgh and Michigan State over Connecticut...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:35:47 PM)
I've actually got Michigan State as a 6-seed winning the whole enchillada. Talk about going on a limb.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:36:58 PM)
As far as the first part, it's not far fetched if they play the type of basketball they've played at times. However, while this team can win basketball games without shooting the ball, they cannot beat a Connecticut, Villanova or Duke unless they're shooting the ball better than the last few weeks. I think in the back of peoples' minds, they still believe this team is overacheiving, and wait for reality to set in.
bracket (Mar 15, 2006 6:37:06 PM)
Don't buy into the Steve Lavin UCLA bandwagon. Indiana is winning that bracket.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:38:21 PM)
Don't buy into any Mike Davis coached team. That team may very well lose in round one to San Diego State in Salt Lake City. The Aztecs are athletic and talented and could give Indiana fits. And if you think Marco Killingsworth is poorly conditioned as it is, wait to see him 4,000 feet up in that Salt Lake altitude. Indiana will be very fatigued playing at that elevation.
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 6:38:36 PM)
Kyle, I know this may not have come up.............but how hard to you see Ohio State marketing Chris Wells and Greg Oden? Rare to see this kind of talent on campus at the same time. Any marketing plans in the future?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:39:27 PM)
There's really only so much you can do to market individual players, but I doubt Ohio State will go out of their way to market either one. It won't matter though, Oden especially won't need any marketing. He's already going to be the NCAA poster boy for college basketball next season.
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 6:39:34 PM)
IF Ohio State starts hitting shots from the perimeter, I think they can match up with anyone in the country. What do you attribute to the cold shooting from the outside?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:40:21 PM)
With Je'Kel Foster, I think it's tired legs. With the rest of the team, I think they're just collectively in a funk and this team seems to be very contagious with it's shooting. If Foster and someone else gets hot in the tournament, they all very well might get hot.
murphdawg (Mar 15, 2006 6:40:28 PM)
what are your upset picks?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:40:39 PM)

Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:40:55 PM)
First round first...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:41:42 PM)
Utah State over Washington, Alabama over Marquette, San Diego State over Indiana, UW Milwaukee over Oklahoma and Iona over LSU
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:42:16 PM)
In the second round, I have Wichita State over Tennessee, San Diego State over Gonzaga and UW Milwaukee over Florida.
Bellbuck (Mar 15, 2006 6:42:37 PM)
What's with all the love that Georgetown is getting? They're 5 and 5 in their last 10 games and have an RPI of 37?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:43:51 PM)
Georgetown could potentially be a nightmare for Ohio State, but it's true perhaps they're getting a little too much praise. After all, this is a team that lost to South Florida less than two weeks ago. The reason, however, for their attention is that they are athletic, have a few good shooters, they work well without the ball, play great defense and have a 7-2 post player that continues to improve.
Guest (Mar 15, 2006 6:44:01 PM)
South Alabama vs UW Milwaukee in the sweet 16 right?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:44:15 PM)
Thaddues asks about South Alabama vs. UW Milwaukee...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:44:44 PM)
that would be a second round matchup, but while I think Florida will beat South Alabama, that's also a potential upset. South Alabama is a very good shooting ball club, and while they aren't very big, they have some quickness.
Guest (Mar 15, 2006 6:44:55 PM)
kyle.. not really a question but.... ill give my 2 cents on je'kel..... I think he works so hard on defense that he is too tired on offense... I don't think its from playing so many games, I think its from 1st half to 2nd half, not because its late in the season.... thoughts?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:45:23 PM)
Thaddeus asks if Foster's problem with fatigue is how hard he's working on defense...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:45:52 PM)
I would say it's possible that's a small part, but Foster has been working his butt off defensively all season long, so I am not sure that's the main issue with his shooting.
Guest (Mar 15, 2006 6:46:38 PM)
The good teams when they are cold are beaten and the great teams that are cold are beatable. Folks, we have never been out of a game that whe shot badly in, so we DO NOT rely on it like everybody thinks. We are fundamental, solid, team that is in the top 10 or so teams that have a great shot at winning the whole things.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:47:02 PM)
I have time for a few more questions
foster (Mar 15, 2006 6:47:44 PM)
I kind of like UNC in the final four, what do you think?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:48:38 PM)
I don't think North Carolina has the talent or experience on the perimeter to make a run that deep. I love Tyler Hansbrough obviously, and I think Bobby Frasor is a budding guard, but this team still has some holes - Wes Miller, Rayshawn Terry is inconsistent... I just don't think they quite have the horses. Next year will be a different story.
foster (Mar 15, 2006 6:49:27 PM)
Kyle, Bruce Hooley has Marquette in the final four and Arizona in the elite eight. Is he smoking something or what?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:50:59 PM)
I'm not sure what he sees in Arizona, but the Marquette pick isn't off the wall. Marquette is very talented with the three guards James, McNeal and Matthews and then you throw in Novak. Their only problem is those first three are freshman and kind of struggling to shoot recently, not to mention they lack a consistent post player. Arizona has had so many problems and fizzled against the best teams they've played this year... I just can't see them making that type of run, especially when it requires beating Wisconsin in round one and Villanova in round two

GW or UNC-Wilmington?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:54:41 PM)

OCBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:54:53 PM)

OCBuckeye (Mar 15, 2006 6:57:26 PM)

I actually said earlier I think San Diego State wins
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:58:19 PM)
they are VERY talented and athletic, although they don't play smart basketball, which is why you might have been unethused about them. However, Marcus Slaughter can REALLY give Killingsowrth problems down inside, and I don't see Indiana stopping the Aztecs' dribble penetration
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 6:58:36 PM)
Combine that with the elevation factor (Indiana tires very easily already) and you have the formula for IU going down

Columbus has the regional again in another year or so, correct? But OSU would be te host school, so we couldnt play at Nation Wide if im correct?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:01:03 PM)
Yes, this next season, Columbus is hostin first/second round games. Ohio State is the "host" school, meaning they automatically can't play there even if they played less than 3 games a season on that floor
MFTodd (Mar 15, 2006 7:01:30 PM)
Should I buy the regional tickets next year? Not sure why if we are playing elsewhere?

Ohio State will end up in Chicago or Lexington next year for the first two rounds if they are a 1-4 seed

I actually could see him saying, "hey, we have to take one down so let's try to replace it"
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:03:50 PM)
He's obviously a coach that knows how to motivate his players, but ultimately, they won't need the motivation. If a group of 5-year seniors and a JUCO transfer senior can't motivate themselves in the NCAA Tournament, nothing will help!

Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:07:42 PM)
Georgetown, IMO, will be the toughest potential opponent up until Villanova in the Elite 8. I am not convinced the Hoyas beat Northern Iowa, but I would see it as Georgetown, Wis-Milwaukee and then Villanova as things currently stand.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:08:05 PM)
From matchup standpoint, I think Ohio State overall got the best possible draw they could

I"m getting in late and catching up. I see where you said there would be a problem playing in Salt Lake City. I heard Rick Majerus interviewed a couple days ago and he said that was hype because the games are played inside and it doesn't make a difference. Comments?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:09:55 PM)
I'm not sure how Majerus could say that. Even in a ventillated building, the air is still thinner in higher elevations. It's well documented for teams that are not used to playing in the elevations that they sometimes struggle in that environment. Remember Ohio State against Utah State in 2002? Majerus coached over half his career in those elevations, I think he's underestimating it because that's what he's used to

Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 15, 2006 7:12:07 PM)
I've done much better in office pools in the past because I didn't analyze too much, so what you say has merit. This year, I used tournament trends and history to help dicate my picks after the first few rounds, so I'm hoping that trying an unconventional method will help haha
