OSU Notebook: Dials-Hibbert, Hoyas and More

We preview Sunday's NCAA second-round game between Ohio State and Georgetown (note time change to 4:50 p.m. on CBS). We have notes on the match-up between Terence Dials and 7-2 Hoyas center Roy Hibbert. We look at the Hoyas, the history of this rivalry and much more.

The biggest topic at Saturday's media events for Sunday's NCAA Minneapolis Region second round game between No. 2 seed Ohio State and seventh-seeded Georgetown (4:50 p.m., CBS) was the match-up in the middle between OSU's 6-9 Terence Dials and Georgetown's 7-2 Roy Hibbert.

Dials, who had 19 points and 13 rebounds in OSU's NCAA first-round win over Davidson Friday, is the reigning Big Ten player of the year. But he has yet to face such a tall opponent as Hibbert, who averaged 11.9 points, 6.3 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game as a sophomore.

"It definitely poses some problems for us with him being 7-2 and also being a pretty skilled player," Dials said. "We will try and keep the ball out of his hands. I just have to play him as aggressive as possible."

Dials was asked how he would try and defend Hibbert.

"That's just the feel of the game," he said. "We will find out once the game starts. We haven't gone head to head before. I don't know what to expect. I'm just going to play my game. I have gone against some good big guys all season in the Big Ten. Tomorrow's match-up won't be any different. He's just a few inches taller."

OSU coach Thad Matta was asked how Dials would contend with Hibbert at the offensive end.

"If you look at Terence's improvement over the course of the year, it has been his ability to finish around the basket," Matta said. "It will be more of a challenge with that size and (Georgetown's) length around the basket. Hopefully, Terence can get some angles to score and go after it. We are going to do what we do and find an angle for him to get to the rim."

Hibbert had 17 points and nine rebounds in Georgetown's 54-49 win over Northern Iowa on Friday.

"In the Big East, every big man wants to come after me," Hibbert said. "We just have to keep on doing what we do and run our offense. The back door cuts will come if they want to stop me from getting the ball. We also have some great shooters."

Regarding Dials, Hibbert said, "He's really big and aggressive. It will be a nice challenge. He has really good hands and he gets a lot of rebounds. I will have to do my part to keep him off the boards."

Of course, some say the emerging Hibbert could be the next in the line of Georgetown centers that includes Patrick Ewing, Dikembe Mutombo, Alonzo Mourning and others.

"I hear about the former players all the time," Hibbert said. "They have done a lot of stuff I can't ever probably do. I just have to work to attain that status."

Georgetown forward Brandon Bowman said the Hoyas base their defense around Hibbert.

"Ray is 7 feet and when he gets his hands up he's like 8," Bowman said. "We want to play long with our hands up in the air. We want to be active on defense and disturb a lot of passes. We want to close out the right way on their shooters and disturb a lot of their shots."

Georgetown coach John Thompson III said he has enjoyed seeing Hibbert come into his own.

"He is getting his comfort level down on the block," he said. "He is getting to that point. Before, he would just turn and try to drop it in. Roy has come a long way."

Scouting The Hoyas

Thompson is in his third season as the Georgetown head coach, following in the footsteps of his father, the legendary John Thompson. The younger Thompson spent five seasons as an assistant at his alma mater at Princeton and four years as the head coach there before coming to the school his dad made famous.

Matta was asked if Georgetown could be a cross between LSU, which oozes athleticism, and Northwestern, which specializes in the deliberate Princeton offense.

"That is a heck of an analogy," Matta said. "How they look with the size and their length and athleticism. I said LSU may be the best team we've played this year with that force down low. You have to be patient on defense. They run the same offense (as Northwestern), but they are different athletically. They can drive the ball and they have a post-up guy. Northwestern doesn't post up that much."

Georgetown is a big and balanced team. Besides Hibbert, the Hoyas start 6-9 forward Jeff Green (11.8 points per game, 6.3 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game), the 6-9 Bowman (10.9 ppg, 5.1 rpg), 6-2 guard Ashanti Cook (9.5 ppg) and 6-1 guard Jonathan Wallace (8.6 ppg).

The Hoyas, 22-9 after the win over UNI, were one-and-done in the NCAA Tournament the past two years. But they popped back on the national radar with an 87-84 of then-unbeaten and No. 1-ranked Duke on Jan. 21.

"Georgetown is a great team," said OSU guard Je'Kel Foster. "They play within their system. They do a lot of great things on and off the ball on defense. They are a great all-around team."

Dials added, "Their coach came from the Princeton style of offense. We have gone against that with Northwestern. Northwestern is not nearly as athletic as Georgetown. We just want to play Ohio State defense. Hopefully, that will work tomorrow."

OSU guard J.J. Sullinger added his take on the Hoyas.

"They can slow it down and be a patient offense," he said. "But at the same time, they've got some guys who can break plays off and make plays on their own. They have the best of both worlds. We understand that and will not be surprised."

Matta watched the UNI-Georgetown game and scouted both teams. It was not decided until the final minutes, making the task harder.

"My thought was, ‘Here we go again, another team I don't want to play, just like Davidson,' " Matta said. "But when you find out that you are playing Georgetown as a coach you immediately begin to ask yourself how you are going to defend and how you are going to score against them."

Wallace said the Hoyas have taken to Thompson's approach.

"That was the style we inherited when the coach came in," Wallace said. "He brought in the system and we have just tried to execute it to the best of our ability."

Scouting The Buckeyes

OSU scraped by 15th-seeded Davidson 70-62 to advance to the second round. Thompson, of course, has since immersed himself in everything Scarlet and Gray.

"I watched them on tape last night and they do a terrific job of spreading the floor out," the Hoyas coach said. "Their spacing is good and they have terrific shooters. We have got to limit their threes and push out on their shooters. We can't forget about the big fellow in the middle. They have complements for each other. If you focus on one area, they will beat you with the other."

In reflection, Matta said OSU had a tough assignment with Davidson, which led 29-25 at halftime.

"We knew playing Davidson with seven seniors we had a tremendous challenge in front of us," Matta said. "We were probably more concerned with stopping their three-point shooting and trying to score against them."

OSU perked up midway through the second half when Ron Lewis nailed a couple of three-pointers.

"My role is to come off the bench and provide energy," said Lewis, who had 16 of his 19 points in the second half. "That's what I'm willing to do."

Sullinger said the Buckeyes will respond better on Sunday.

"No question, we will come out tomorrow better," he said. "We will be more energized and we will definitely have our edge."

OSU would technically be shooting for its first NCAA Sweet 16 berth since 1992, although the school made it to the Final Four in 1999 – one of four years stricken from the record book recently due to NCAA sanctions.

Sullinger wants his OSU basketball experience to continue beyond Sunday.

"In order to do that, we have to get a win tomorrow," he said. "That is our main concern and our main focus. I have watched Georgetown a lot on TV. You see they beat Duke. You know they are a good team. We like to think we're a good team, too. It should be a good game."

Focus On Offense

OSU shot 29.7 percent from the floor in the first half before hitting 53.6 percent in the second half, when the Buckeyes outscored Davidson 45-33 to get the win.

The Buckeyes have not reached 45 percent in shooting in their last seven games, dating to a Feb. 22 win at Michigan State where they shot 48.3 percent.

"Against Davidson, we got great looks by attacking the basket," Foster said. "We've got to get Terence involved a little bit more in the game."

Foster has endured a rough 10-game stretch with his own shooting, although he hit a big three late in the game against Davidson. He was asked if shooters can go into a funk if they don't tally early in a game.

"A lot of shooters do that," he said. "They try to base a game on their first shot. I try not to do that. I try to shoot every shot the same and just try to hold my followthrough."

Foster said his dad, who counseled him on his shot this past week, said he seemed to do better. He was 2 of 6 from the floor against Davidson.

"He watched the game at home," Foster said. "My mom was here. My dad told me that the shot looked great, just keep shooting it and the shots will fall for me."

The Georgetown Legend

The elder Thompson put Georgetown on the map in the 1980s with teams based around Ewing. The Hoyas won the 1984 national title and made it to the championship game in both 1982 and 1985.

"I think my memory dates back to the period when they won the national championship," Matta said. "I can still picture Coach Thompson standing back there with the towel over his shoulder. (Former Matta assistant) Sean Miller played in the Big East and he talked about going against Mourning and Mutombo and just the competitive nature there.

"To play Georgetown and the reputation that university has, we look forward to the challenge."

Dials added his two cents on the Georgetown mystique.

"They were on TV a lot growing up," he said. "We know they're known for developing big men. I've watched basketball and Georgetown and the Big East and they're always on TV. They've always been one of the elite teams in the Big East."

Thompson's Take

The elder Thompson is in Dayton covering the games for CBS radio. Reporters asked him about Hibbert's progress.

"He has improved as rapidly as any kid his size I have seen around Georgetown," Thompson said. "He has made a great deal of improvement from one year to another. He's surprised me as far as he has improved. He is also a hell of a nice kid. He has a lot of old fashioned values because he listens."

The former coach was then asked if it was neat to see his son carry on his legacy with the Hoyas.

"To hell with the legacy and the tradition," Thompson said. "That's my child. People tend to forget that sometimes because of who I am. But that's my child. I don't ever want to forget that first. All of that (stuff) that comes with success and being a coach, I've had enough of that. That's why I left coaching. I am more interested in what he's doing."

John Thompson III said it's neat to have his dad in town for the NCAA.

"It's special to have Pops around, whether it's an NCAA win or the first game of the season," the coach said. "Hopefully he'll get a chance to congratulate me, before I stop coaching, after a lot more NCAA wins."

Time Change

The OSU-Georgetown game was originally listed as a 2:20 p.m. start. But CBS game moved it to the better 4:50 p.m. time slot after George Mason upset Michigan State on Friday at Dayton. The George Mason-North Carolina game will start at 2:20 p.m.

Matta was asked when he learned of the time change.

"I found out about it at 1:15 in the morning," he said. "My reaction was, ‘Good, we want to play the second game.' "

He was then asked why that was so good. His reply: "Because that's when we're playing. We're excited as we could be to play the second game."

Thompson added his take on the change as well: "I found out late last night. The time does not matter because the opponent is still the same."

With the later start, CBS will regionally televise OSU-Georgetown as well as Texas-N.C. State and Arizona-Villanova. Fans in those areas should expect to see larger portions of those games with look-ins to the OSU game.

Also Notable

* OSU's game against Davidson was, well, a little chippy. Afterwards, Davidson guard Matt McKillop accused OSU guard Jamar Butler of saying, "That's right, bitch-ass," after blocking one of his shots late in the game. Butler was perturbed over an earlier hard foul.

"Obviously, we don't want that to happen because of the sportsmanship of it all," Matta said. "I was not aware of that. Obviously, we'll address it. There are always two sides to every story. I have learned that having two little girls. I don't know honestly what happened with that."

* The Buckeyes did little to get the crowd at UD Arena behind them on Friday. They hope the crowd will be behind them on Sunday.

"We have great fans at Ohio State," Foster said. "Wherever we go, they seem to be there. We try not to get too focused on the crowd. We have a game to play and we focus on the opposing team."

* Matta now has a record of 8-2 as a coach at UD Arena, including 5-1 in Atlantic 10 tournament games and now 1-0 in the NCAA.

* OSU has a 2-1 all-time record against Georgetown. That includes a 47-46 OSU win at the 1981 Great Alaskan Shootout, a 82-79 NCAA second-round loss in 1987 and a 71-60 win over the Hoyas in Las Vegas on Dec. 12, 1990.

The NCAA loss remains one of OSU's toughest defeats. The Buckeyes, then coached by Gary Williams, entered the tournament as the ninth seed and knocked off eighth-seeded Kentucky (and Rex Chapman) 91-77.

Top-seeded Georgetown, which was ranked fourth nationally, was next at the Omni in Atlanta. OSU led 39-29 at halftime and was ahead 44-29 in the first minute of the second half. But the Hoyas rallied behind little known guard Charles Smith, a 6-0 sophomore. Smith, who would become a prime player for the Hoyas in following years, had 19 of his 22 points in the second half. His three-pointer with 1:16 left gave Georgetown a 76-73 lead.

Reggie Williams led the Hoyas that day with 24 points, while Dennis Hopson had 20 for OSU before fouling out. The Buckeyes played in the tournament that weekend in Atlanta just days after the death of Woody Hayes.
