JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 5:53:55 PM)
How are you doing this evening Kyle?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 5:54:06 PM)
Doing just fine, thanks. I hope everyone else is well
82dBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 5:54:19 PM)
Kyle, Good evening and thanks again for doing this........I know it's early but please predict our preseason ranking for next year's bball season?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 5:54:52 PM)
I'm tentatively thinking between No.2 and No. 4. If I had to predict today, I would say North Carolina #1, Texas #2, Florida #3 and Ohio State #4
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 5:55:42 PM)
Rough couple of days for OSU hoops
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 5:56:19 PM)
Definitely was. I watched the BC-OSU women's game last night, and Jim Foster had to be pulling his hair out with how easy BC's baskets were coming. What's worse, is Ohio State just couldnt' get the ball to Davenport
82dBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 5:56:24 PM)
Any insider info on the Alford situation regarding the vacant Indiana and Missouri jobs?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 5:57:15 PM)
I heard from pretty good sources a while back that Alford was in fact one of the top candidates for the Indiana job, and last night's report by Andy Katz turned out to be false as he reported today. My take is that Alford is waiting for the IU offer, if it comes, but Rick Greenspan might want someone else.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 5:57:35 PM)
Who do you think the starting five will be?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 5:58:10 PM)
I really think the season starts with Jamar Butler at PG, Daequan Cook and Ron Lewis at 2/3, Ivan Harris or Othello Hunter (or even Matt Terwilliger) at PF and Greg Oden at center.
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 5:58:55 PM)
Can 't wait til next year ! By the start of the conference I expect to see Cook . Conley . Butler and Oden starting with Lewis the sixth man while the 4 spot remains a question . Don't forget about the success Spiece had the past couple of years , What your thoughts ?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:00:20 PM)
I don't think you'll see Lewis coming off the bench. I think Conley will be the 6th man next year the entire season, but you'll see some sets where he and Butler are on the floor at the same time. I think the chemistry of these players together in AAU ball and also having so much talent and understanding of the game will make Ohio State a little more a threat than most teams with so much freshmen talent
82dBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:00:36 PM)
Kyle, just to clarify. The report that Alford was not a finalist for the job turned out to be false? I hadn't read that yet.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:01:24 PM)
Yes, apparently Katz backtracked today and said Alford is not yet out of the running for the IU job, which makes more sense. Last night I heard that report and didn't think it added up based on what I knew of the situation. I dont' think it's a done deal as Greenspan might have other preferences, but I know Alford is a possibility
Bellbuck (Mar 22, 2006 6:01:28 PM)
Will Mayes be in the mix next year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:02:27 PM)
If Mayes remains at Ohio State, he most certainly will be in the mix. However, the next month or so will be interesting to see how it plays out. Matta likes to sit down with every player at the end of the year and talk over the future and what they expect in the offseason and how they might be used the next year, and we'll see if Mayes gets on the same page with the coaching staff or if he instead transfers
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:02:33 PM)
Insiders are saying Randy Wittman and Pitino are the top choices at IU. Have you heard the same?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:03:14 PM)
I think Pitino is wishful thinking. Pitino made some very strong comments about how he is in no way considering the Indiana job, and it makes no sense to leave for a lateral job. I do think Wittman is Greenspan's top choice or near the top of the list, however.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:03:47 PM)
Are we going to extend an offer to Dante Jackson? My friend, an OHSAA ref, who has done several of his games, says he is definitely worthy of an offer. Your thoughts??
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:05:06 PM)
Your friend is correct in my honest opinion. Whether he's offered or not is hard to say, but I've seen plenty of him and I think he's worthy of an offer. He still needs to work on his shot, his ball handling and maybe a few small things like lateral quickness... but he has a great understanding of the game and plays it well. On top of that, he's a great kid. Think Brian Brown when looking for a comparison, although he's not quite as quick as Brown but he's about two inches taller
82dBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:05:34 PM)
With coaches like Izzo, Weber, Ryan, Alford, and Matta for the B10 teams in the Dance, I still can't get over not having a SINGLE team in the Sweet 16. Your thoughts?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:06:01 PM)
To be quite honest, if you really looked at it closely, you should have seen it coming (we all should have)...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:06:27 PM)
Wisconsin and Iowa were atrocious away from home this season. The NCAA Tournament is played on a neutral floor... so that right there is an indication of possible problems forthcoming...
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:06:44 PM)
Michigan State was underacheiving and never got their act together
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:07:12 PM)
Illinois never had consistent perimeter scoring all season and Ohio State was not shooting very well the last part of the year and ran into a horrible matchup in the second round
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:07:40 PM)
Put it all together, and you combine the fact the NCAA is about matchups and playing away from home, and it was just a terrible draw
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 6:07:58 PM)
Is 06 recruiting absolutely done ? For 07 other than usual names . do you have any new news ?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:08:29 PM)
No. In fact, depending on what happens with Sylvester Mayes, you could see as many as two junior college signings in April or the first of May for this class.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:09:17 PM)
If Mayes leaves, they would like to get a JUCO guard replacement. I think Ohio State is also looking around at possibly brining in a true post player from the junior college ranks to back up Greg Oden. The problem is that's easier said than done looking for a quality player to be willing to back up a player of his caliber.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:09:37 PM)
As for 2007, there's nothing new yet, but I would guess in the next two weeks I'll have some new names or news for everyone
82dBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:09:49 PM)
Are you willing to give any percentages on OSU landing Kosta and Dallas? I haven't heard anything to make me believe they are not still a strong OSU lean.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:10:46 PM)
Not percentages, but to this point, there is no reason to think otherwise. For a period of time, I think Koufos was about even with Louisville and Ohio State, and I might argue for a small time the Cardinals held the edge in a few aspects of the recruitment, but I think those edges are mostly gone now.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:10:55 PM)
After seeing the problems rebounding against Georgetown, how are we going to address that issue? Is Hunter the answer or is that where you see additional JUCO help?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:12:25 PM)
I think the problem will take care of itself. Remember this season Ohio State was essentially playing a 6-5 forward (Sullinger) and a 6-7 wing (Sylvester) as the solutions to a PF. The addition of Hunter, possible improvement of Terwilliger and maybe Brayden Bell being added to the mix should help the rebounding overall. Plus, Daequan Cook and David Lighty rebound well for their size, as does Mike Conley.
Bellbuck (Mar 22, 2006 6:12:34 PM)
I read where Dallas Lauderdale didn't really show up in a couple of games this year against better competetion. Any concerns?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:13:25 PM)
I think there is reason to be a little concerned. He's a very good player and has dominated at times. I think he's a good player regardless, but he definitely played very poorly in their two biggest tests of the season. He's got plenty of time to develop though. Too early at least to push the panic button
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 6:13:31 PM)
My Final Four is LSU , Florida , UCONN and Memphis . Who are your picks???
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:14:44 PM)
I'm gun shy to make any picks after this year's bracket debacle for me! I get a feeling though after all this hype about who the most vulnerable No. 1 seed might be, we could see all four make it for the first time. I like UCLA to upset Memphis possibly, and I could see BC or Florida/Georgetown beating Villanova, but in the end, I would not be surprised to see a clean sweep of all No. 1's getting there
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:14:50 PM)
Hey Kyle, how long do you think Cook, Conley, Lighty, and Oden will stay at OSU?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:15:09 PM)
Oden two years, Cook two or three years, and Conley and Lighty I see staying for four years
Guest (Mar 22, 2006 6:15:27 PM)
Any word on any possible recruits pulling the trigger soon
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:15:40 PM)
wvbuckeye asked if any recruits might be pulling the trigger soon....
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:16:39 PM)
Dallas Lauderdale would probably be the next one to do so. That could happen within the next month or two. After that, there are a few guys the could commit somewhere this summer or early fall, including Kosta Koufos. But in the meantime, I don't see anyone else doing it very soon other than Lauderdale.
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:16:51 PM)
Can OSU realistically repeat the success they had this year with next years class, I know UNC did a lot with what they had, but doing better next year than this past year seems hard to accomplish. Also will the lack of senior leadership really hurt next years team?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:18:33 PM)
Having Jamar Butler and Ron Lewis will help the leadership aspect a little bit, although Butler needs to continue to become a little more vocal. The incoming group will struggle early in the season at times just because of their youth, but I think it's a group that you throw in with Butler, Lewis and even Harris, and I don't think you'll see the same struggles UNC had at times with their youth. Remember that Carolina had absolutely no experience whatsoever. Ohio State at least has some guys back with a lot of experience.
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:19:02 PM)
Do you still think that we lead with Kofous and Lauderdale, recruiting is a year round process and have we lost pace with any of these players to any other schools?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:19:39 PM)
Check the chat transcript tomorrow, but I did address this earlier. The short answer is yes, I think Ohio State is now in a good position again with both players.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:20:36 PM)
The questions are caught up for those what have any others.
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:21:46 PM)
Im watching the NIT right now ... do you think that Missouri State and Creighton got screwed because they are member of the MVC?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:23:09 PM)
I've got the game on behind me as well. To be honest, no I don't think they were screwed because of hte MVC, I just think Utah State and Air Force (and George Mason too) got in because of their ties to the committee. It sounds a little too much like Oliver Stone, but there is a lot of credible circumstantial evidence through the years to show committee members who's team(s) are on the bubble get favorable selections.
Bellbuck (Mar 22, 2006 6:23:28 PM)
I heard that Huggins may be looking for an assistant coach job in the pros. Where do you think he ends up?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:23:52 PM)
It's impossible to predict as I hear two schools a week it seems for "Huggs watch 2006"
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:24:01 PM)
I do think he will be in college next year though, and not the NBA
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:24:15 PM)
NC is going to be so STRONG next year with the underclassmen they have now, combined with the class they have coming in? How do you think we would match up with their anticipated top seven of (Hansbrough, Terry, Frasor, Wright, Ellington, Lawson, and Thompson)?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:26:07 PM)
I sure would love to find out. Hansbrough played against Oden two years ago in high school and Oden got the best of him, but Hansbrough played him admirably. Next year though, Hansbrough would be MUCH more polished and have a year experience under his belt. That would be a terrific showdown. Ohio State would probably be equal in the backcourt with Butler, Cook and Conley compared to Frasor, Ellington and Lawson. Then you throw in Terry and Lewis and Ohio State's unproven PF's against UNC's unproven PF's... and it's just a really intriguing matchup
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 6:26:34 PM)
I look for some early struggles next year however . by seasons end I think next years team will be better than this year ! Agree ???
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:27:03 PM)
Absolutely. I have said a few times that next year's team might not have as good a record as this year's, and might not be as good consistently throughout the season, but will be better equipped for a run in the NCAA Tournament
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:27:11 PM)
So, do you think Oden will have any pre-season All-American or All-Big Ten nominations before he ever plays a game? Just curious what you think.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:27:46 PM)
I think you'll see him make first team All-Big Ten in the preseason and an honorable mention candidate for All-American. Whether it's justified or not is hard to say, but I would not be surprised at all.
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:27:57 PM)
I have read that Kevin Love still is considering OSU as a potential college choice, what do you think about his recruitment and is OSU still a possibility?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:28:28 PM)
He will be really hard to pry away from UCLA, but Ohio State is still not out of the question. Watch Oregon here if a new coach is hired.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:28:58 PM)
The fact he won't make a decision for a while gives Ohio State plenty of time to make another run at him, but I'm not sure they will be able to get him.
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 6:29:15 PM)
In the next week or so would you please post for each Big 10 team the returning players and new recruits !
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:30:02 PM)
No problem. I'll do that by the weekend. I can tell you just off the top of my head that my current pick for the Big Ten will be Wisconsin for next year. They return Tucker, Butch and Taylor and should have Landry and Steimsma back as well as a few pretty good recruits.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:30:33 PM)
Ohio State is my No. 2 pick with Illinois No. 3. Michigan State and Michigan should fight for 4&5
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:30:52 PM)
What would the best number of players to recruit for next year be? And if all things remain equal, do we get the players we are after?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:31:50 PM)
I personally think they should sign a junior college player as a 6th recruit for 2006. That player would be in the same class as Butler and Terwilliger, which would balance things out a bit more. For 2007, I would say 4 players
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:31:54 PM)
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:32:12 PM)
CBS Sportsline, according to ESPN's report just now, says Bob Huggins is considering an offer to be the head coach at Kansas State
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:32:52 PM)
The dominoes would begin to fall rapidly if Huggins accepts that offer
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:32:59 PM)
Will Dante Jackson go to UM?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:33:17 PM)
No. I don't think he will. I think in the end it will be Xavier or Ohio State for Jackson in my personal opinion.
kleintime16 (Mar 22, 2006 6:33:29 PM)
As of now, do you think there will be any suprises or dissapointments in the next year of recruiting?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:34:38 PM)
I wouldn't rule out a potential surprise on the national radar with someone that hasn't been reported yet, although I don't see any reason to expect a disappointment unless you've got your hopes up for a definite offer to Dante Jackson. And for sake of clarity, I am not aware of any "surprises" yet, I'm just saying I wouldn't be too surprised to see some big names pop up this spring
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:34:43 PM)
So Mayo and Walker are headed to Kansas State?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:34:57 PM)
If Huggins takes that job, it wouldn't surprise me.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:35:06 PM)
Any changes with the recruitment of Yancey Gates or Delvon Roe? Any chance they end up joining the Bucks someday down the road?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:35:47 PM)
Roe will be a possibility, but Gates I don't think will be. Roe is still very wide open, but Ohio State will be in a battle with Michigan, Illinois, Michigan State and Louisville for him.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:35:52 PM)
Also, what are the percentages as of right now you would think OSU would have for landing Herb Pope or Rakim Sanders?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:36:35 PM)
Zero on both accounts. Pope was really interested in Ohio State, but there were too many other factors involved there. Sanders just eliminated Ohio State this week because of distance. He's now down to Providence and BC.
JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 22, 2006 6:36:39 PM)
Can you share why you feel taht way about Gates?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:37:05 PM)
I think he's well aware of the people coming in ahead of him and I believe he feels the situation will be very clustered.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:38:11 PM)
We've got about 5 more minutes or so for any last questions
bw1954 (Mar 22, 2006 6:39:02 PM)
Matta did an unbelieveable job this year ! I hope Smith gives him a well deserved raise . ! I see Matta continuing to grow as tactian each year , however, I would like to see more discipline and control at the end of games . Shot selection also was a concern . Whats your thoughts
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:39:58 PM)
I too think there needs to be a little more discipline late in a game. That might be one of the few drawbacks of Matta's letting the players play, but I'm sure as he gets more experienced as a coach and more wiser, that aspect will improve as well.
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:40:23 PM)
Conley starting next year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:40:50 PM)
Not next year IMHO, although he will get plenty of playing time.
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:41:40 PM)
Goal for next year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:42:32 PM)
Win the Big Ten and make it to the Elite 8 or Final Four should be the goal for next season. A national championship isn't out of the question, but I would like their chances much more for the season after if Oden and everyone stick around
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:43:46 PM)
I'll take one more question!
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:44:25 PM)
Duke or UNC games next year?
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:44:59 PM)
I would guess one of them, but not both. I think Ohio State will play one of them in the Big Ten - ACC Challenge, and probably will be in Columbus - especially if it's UNC
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:45:35 PM)
That's all the time I have for this evening, but thanks for joining me. Stay tuned and I'm sure we'll have another chat soon. We do have some McDonald's All-American game coverage coming next week from San Diego, so stay tuned for that as well.
Kyle S. Lamb (Mar 22, 2006 6:45:42 PM)
Take care everyone!
MJ (Mar 22, 2006 6:45:53 PM)
