Good afternoon to all!

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 9:56:06 AM)
It's been a while since I've held this forum with the state basketball tournaments and all so let's catch up if we can. What's on your mind?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 9:56:30 AM)
Spring is here so let the session begin!

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 9:57:32 AM)
Wow is right! Buckeyes fans certainly weren't surprised. And silky-smooth Cook wasn't too shabby either.

Kirk (Mar 30, 2006 9:58:06 AM)
either way, I wanted to post a question that was put on the message board by Crazybuckfan40: "I will not be able to be here for the chat, but if someone could ask him if he has had a chance to talk to coach Ginn about having Barksdale on the Ginn tour bus and all that came about, and what he thinks of our chances now. Also if he knows who else is going to be on the bus tour. Thanks.

Plus a few more that were sent in and I don't think you got them, so I'll post them then head out so I'm not in the way....

Gary, have you heard anything about Ray Small lately? Is he going to get through the admissions?

buckicrazy (Mar 30, 2006 9:58:49 AM)
Good afternoon Gary, Any news on the DE Martin?

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 9:59:48 AM)
How do you see the QB reps unfolding this spring? I love JZ, and think he'd be first in if Troy got hurt, but how do the get experience for the young guns?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 9:59:48 AM)
Hi edbuck...I've always been a proponent of Justin Zwick and I don't feel the need to abandon ship at this time. I hope he competes hard this spring and prepares himself as if he is the starter. That being said, Smith is obviously the man now but Zwick still has a valuable role. Think of Krenzel/McMullen of two years ago and I see no difference this time around. I do like Schoenhoft as the heir apparent but only time will tell. He has been impressive to the staff thus far from what I've been told.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:02:42 AM)
buckicrazy asked about Martin a question back that slipped through on me. I read the interview when he said the pressure is more on him for Notre Dame with him being from Gary, Indiana and his mom wanting him to go to ND. I'm sure that won't determine the eventual outcome but you have to feel good about that if you're an ND fan. I think JT will do all they can do to land Martin...I just hope it's enough. He's a really good one no question. He's a must get in Ohio along with Clifford IMHO.

JohnnyBuckeye (Mar 30, 2006 10:06:18 AM)
Do you think Donnie Evege will commit this weekend?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:06:18 AM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye...I don't know if there will be any public commitment...and I've done my poking and proding concerning Evege up this point. I know he was a priority on signing day to commit and if hasn't already committed to OSU (i.e. silent verbal) it may happen soon, whether it's public information or not. In other words, it's not if ...it's just when...if it hasn't already happened. I do think he would want it to be public information for his best interest and Ohio State's best interest. I think it may happen real soon if it hasn't already happened...from what I've heard.

buckicrazy (Mar 30, 2006 10:11:01 AM)
Will Henton move ahead of Schoenhoft/Boeckmen next year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:11:02 AM)
That's hard to say bucki...but knowing JT's propensity to use his quarterback as a ball carrier when all else fails, and that facet from his QB at his disposal, Henton will surely be a strong candidate the minute he walks on campus. I believe, however, that Schoenhoft is such a solid quarterback and leader in his own right that once he gains the controls, he may never be supplanted by any quarterback. RS will have a huge advantage over Henton next season from the way I see it. No disrepect to Boeckman either, he certainly will be in the running next year as well, but I'm a big fan of Schoenhoft.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 10:14:44 AM)
There is so much talk about Rehring moving to guard. Do you think that's realistic? He looks more like a tackle to me. Barton looks more suited to play guard. If Rehring is one of the best five, do you think they could move Barton to guard and play Rehring at tackle, or am I just wrong about Rehring be able to play that position?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:14:44 AM)
Ed I think if Rehring plays guard next to Boone on the left side, they may have to change the astrological calender and add 13 more total eclipeses every year for the next couple of seasons. That would be one of the largest slabs of humanity to ever play on one side of the line at any level. The negative to that however is that experience is lacking with those two playing side-by-side, but I would love to see it. Barton is a fixture at the right side, barring injury, and he and Downing are formidable on that side. I like Rehring at guard if he can play there. Why not. We will likely find out this spring.

buckicrazy (Mar 30, 2006 10:19:32 AM)
It looks like tOSU are in on about 3 good OOS OL prospects this year. Is tOSU going to offer to fewer players and try to push harder for the ones they do offer?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:19:32 AM)
The offensive line has to be a priority this recruiting season, instate or OOS, and it doesn't look like the void is going to fill up with instate guys at this time. There are some candidates instate but if you remember by this time last year OSU publically went after three of the state's top guys and only got one of them. They need to do the same, as you alluded to, with some top OOS lineman and identify them early and go hard after them. Take advantage of having Chris Wells, the MVP of the AA game. All of the top recruits watched that game and some would surely love to block for Chris Wells for at least a couple of years. Oglesby is real nice but you certainly can't count on him coming aboard at this time. They need to target a few more top notch guys OOS.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 10:26:14 AM)
Back on the QBs. I know JT likes having two starter quality QBs, and did so at YSU. He is also known to be loyal to seniors. All of that is great. In the past, how has he balanced that with getting some playing time for younger guys? Do you think whoever is #3 will see much playing time this season?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:26:14 AM)
No not at all ed. A pair and a spare is nice but that spare doesn't get out of the trunk very often if at all. It was like that at YSU as well. JT ran a lot of option in his championship years at YSU. Even Nick Cochran, who began his career at OSU, ran the option at times and he was a pure pocket passer. Mark Brungard (think JZ) ran the option and he wasn't a mobile guy by any stretch of the word. Ray Isaac was his first championship guy and he was mobile but he liked to wing the ball around on occasion. JT ultimately likes having two quarterbacks with his first guy being the main guy. The second guy is like the spare. If they're mobile, that's great. If they're not, well he still expects his QB to pull it down and run like Crenzel. The ground game controls the clock and time of possession, which is probably JT's favorite stat.

buckicrazy (Mar 30, 2006 10:31:03 AM)
It seems that Ohio is loaded at RB this coming year. Do you see OSU taking one or more and if so who commits?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:31:03 AM)
buck I do see OSU taking at least one RB if not two in this class. A monster year by Pittman could see him entertaining the thought of going to the league. So they have to prepare for that. I love all four RBs this year. All bring something different to the table. I'm not totally convinced with Morgan Williams, I need to see more of him this year before I go ga-ga over him. Simpson might be too small but I like his videos. I like Herron but some think he's too small. I really love Jordan Mabin at RB and he would probably be my number one running back in Ohio this year even though all the experts don't think so. I haven't studied the OOS guys much yet although the two in Illinois are good looking prospects. I personally think OSU should bring in Mabin as a RB along with another guy and if Mabin doesn't pan out as an RB he can always go over to the defense. Go see Mabin play this year and I guarantee you won't be disappointed.

Osufan14 (Mar 30, 2006 10:31:54 AM)
Gary do you think that Josh Oglesby will be a buckeye

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:31:54 AM)
Hi OSUfan...my gut says no! It's an honest answer.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 10:35:22 AM)
I saw a really good looking kicker last year from either St. Ed's or Benedictine in those early games against Pennsylvania. He even wore #85. Do you know his name and if he is D-1 calibar talent?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:35:22 AM)
Alex Steigerwald is his name, number 85, you are correct. I too liked the young man a whole lot. The last time I spoke to him during the season, Toledo was his only offer. He has a cannon for a leg and was right there with Bryan Wright IMHO. I'm not certain if he signed with Toledo or not but that could be researched quickly. He could kick or punt with equal aplomb.

Mike68 (Mar 30, 2006 10:42:03 AM)
Gary- Give us your top 3 things to watch for in spring ball

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:42:03 AM)
Hi Mike68...my top thing I want to see is where Datish ends up playing number one. Datish, IMO, will fill the line's greatest need. If Cordle can't handle center, Datish will be there. If Boone can handle left tackle, Datish could play guard. Datish is so valuable to this line and he's the main reason why this line will be very solid this year. Number two thing I want to see is who plays Mike. I hope Mike is playing Mike because he truly deserves it. Marcus Freeman is the man on the LB corps so he can play anywhere. I personally think if Freeman ends up at Sam then the LBs will be loaded once again. Will seems like his natural spot but if a Homan or a Kerr can play there that would be great. Freeman can also play Mike but if he doesn't have to play either of those position and ends up at Sam, the LBs will be a deep force once again. I like Freeman wherever he ends up. My guess, becuase the staff still is high on D'Andrea and Kerr right now, is that Freeman could end up at Sam. Those are my top three LBs right now.

buckicrazy (Mar 30, 2006 10:46:52 AM)
IMO, tOSU went with a more mobile QB because of OL play or lack there of. With the quality and depth tOSU has now at OL will a "pocket passer" fit better in the system?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:46:52 AM)
I sort of alluded to this in another question a bit earlier. I believe, from all of my years watching JT, that when given a chance, he always likes to have the option of using his QB on the ground. Not as the leading rusher, like TS was looking like at one point, but as another method of controlling the ball and the clock. That being said, JT has never really been prolific ever with a pocket passer. Statistics at the position of his QB's point that out going back to YSU. So that naturally gives a more mobile QB an edge but it's not the determining factor.

bigman_bt (Mar 30, 2006 10:50:06 AM)
I know the question was asked earlier but I didn't see a response so I will ask again. The DT Barksdale has said that he will be joining the Ginn Bus Tour this summer. The question was whether or not that improves our chances with him and if Coach Ginn has said anything to you about him.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:50:06 AM)
Hi bigman...I purposely called Coach Ginn before the chat to get an answer for you but I couldn't reach him. Hopefully he will return my call soon. I have found, since he's been involved in his academy, that's it's harder and harder to reach him on the first try. I did talk to one of his assistants and he was aware of the name but didn't know the connection. When/if I find out I will pass along the information. I did find out that Glenville has a track meet in Columbus on Saturday, at Hilliard I believe, and they may be attending practice on Friday at Ohio State if they can work the logistics out.

hooter (Mar 30, 2006 10:52:46 AM)
Who do you expect to emerge in the wide received pool behing Gonzo and Ginn? I think Hartline will emerge.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:52:46 AM)
Hi hooter...let's not rule out Roy Hall. I do talk to some of the players on occasion and I've heard a lot from them about Hall recently. I think he's poised to have a breakout campaign. I also think Hartline could find his way on the field this year. There's not a more ferocious competitor then him. Dukes should be right there and so should Robiskie. They receiving corps will be solid and deep no matter who's out there.

wwt (Mar 30, 2006 10:56:26 AM)
I was just able to logon. Has Pittman been talked about yet? Everyone on won't let go that he is not hurt bad - yet I've heard it quoted that his problems are no big deal.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:56:26 AM)
Hi wwt...I've heard mixed reports on Pittman myself. I for one, hope that the staff errors on the side of caution with Pittman this spring. There is absolultely no reason for him to go all out and reinjure his hammy this spring. Not playing Pittman also shines the spotlight on the backup race between Haw, M. Wells and Beanie. Guys I really love all four TBs and the depth there is incredible. It should be a great battle this spring. But to be honest, I don't know the real extent of Pittman's injury because I've heard conflicting reports.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 10:59:45 AM)
The third thing I'm going to be watching for this spring, going back to an earlier question, is whether or not Jamario O'Neal is ready for prime time or not. My expectations for him are so high it's incredible. He certainly can be as good as he wants to be with all of his physical ability. He's a headhunter who truly has no idea about how good he can be at the college level. His just needs to understand the game so it slows down a lot for him, much like it did for Donte Whitner.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 11:02:52 AM)
Gary. If you found a magic lamp and the genie granted you three commits as wishes, which three players would you want verbals from?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:02:52 AM)
I'll take Ben Martin and be extremely happy. That being said, my other two wishes would include Oglesby and Clifford. I know that sounds like a canned answer but those three guys, along with Nate Oliver who is already in the fold, are head and shoulders above everybody else that OSU has a realistic chance with.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 11:04:03 AM)
Do you think JO will pick up where Donte left off in the film room?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:04:03 AM)
I sure hope so ed but Donte studied his rear end...to not only get better but to get to the league faster...and it worked well for him. I hope JO is just as hungry. The mental aspect is all that's missing from his game.

kippy (Mar 30, 2006 11:04:50 AM)
Hey what are the chances of a night game this year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:04:50 AM)
Hi kippy...I really don't have any insight on that although I'd love to see Penn State at home under the lights and return the favor from last year.

hooter (Mar 30, 2006 11:06:45 AM)
Has Chris Smith picked a leader yet in his recruiting race?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:06:45 AM)
I don't know that answer hooter but I hope to talk to Chris sometime soon. I know I'll see him at the state track meet in June and I'll chat with him at length there. But I would guess right now that WVU would be right up at this time. I'm sure Mark Snyder is making a huge effort at Marshall for him as well. Smith will get his offers thats for sure. I just haven't spoken with him in a while.

Guest (Mar 30, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
How will our offense match up with Iowa's defense at Iowa? Do you see a possible Penn St. type pitfall game?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
DePietro asked about OSU's offense against Iowas defense at Iowa next year and I think OSU's offense is going to give every defense fits next year. Iowa lost two great linebackers from last year's team but I'm sure they will still put up a fight in front of the home crowd. I do not see the same possible pitfall like Penn State last year because Troy Smith is so much better than he was against Penn State last year. OSU will be better than everybody they play next year because their offense should control every game.

hooter (Mar 30, 2006 11:15:08 AM)
Any hope that Mike Roberts contributes at some point this year?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:15:08 AM)
Hooter I remember interviewing him when he was still in Canada and the high expectations that he had in coming to OSU with his abundance of speed and ability he displayed north of the border. For whatever reason, his skills up there have not translated to this country very well. Sure I'd love to see him contribute this year because he's been in the program so long now, but I certainly am not counting on it.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 11:18:52 AM)
Three of the youngsters we've heard little about are Washington, Russel and Denlinger. Any skinny? Do you believe Denlinger will cut the mustard inside? I guess we really hope so since Cotton and Abdullah have yet to step up.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:18:52 AM)
Ed I have heard good things on all three of those guys. Denlinger may be ready to make a push from what I've been told. Washington is just a pleasant surprise as well with his ability and Russell has not disappointed anyone in his first year eiter. Cotton and Abdallah are obviously enigmas to this point so that bodes well for Denlinger. I really like Larimore as well, not that he'll be ready to step in and play this year, but I'm excited about his future. Washington, I've been told, could surprise us all.

edbuck51 (Mar 30, 2006 11:21:08 AM)
How important do you think having no changes in the coaching staff will be in next year's equation for success?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:21:08 AM)
Continuity is very overlooked and it's something that puts Ohio State in a good position to have a great spring this year. I think it bodes well, especially on the defensive side of the ball, where a lot of inexperienced guys will be working in the two-deep from this point on.

yooperbuck (Mar 30, 2006 11:26:16 AM)
My candidate for biggest breakout this year is John Kerr, but I would also be very happy if it were Eric Haw. Your thoughts.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:26:16 AM)
I'm with you yooperbuck but I think Kerr has a better chance than Haw of the two you mentioned. I don't know what Kerr has in the tank, but he could play football at Ignatius and he could play ball at Indiana as well. That to me confirmed he was a player on this level. People say he's toast since he didn't play when Carpenter got hurt and I have no argument for that. I do know Laurinaitis is a ball player even though he really didn't make plays in his brief opportunity against Michigan or in the Bowl game, when he was in. I do hear Laurinaitis looks great now and is even being looked at inside as the Mike backer this spring. This is Kerr's last shot and he's been champing at the bit for this opportunity so I wish him well. And it's good to hear that his brother is on scholarship now as well. More behemoth size on the offensive line. I sure hope Haw battles hard this spring. I've always liked E-Haw and hope he competes.

hooter (Mar 30, 2006 11:29:10 AM)
Can walkon Tyler Whaley crack the two deep this year? I know he got snaps in several games last year.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:29:10 AM)
Other than Whaley being from Ironton I don't know a whole lot about him. He might be a bit undersized like a Tyree but if he's good enough, he'll find his way onto the two deep.

yooperbuck (Mar 30, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
Hi Gary. Is Pittman ready or lite duty?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
I would guess lite duty but our Dave Biddle should find out a little bit more about Pittman after today's practice. JT will hold court with the media after practice this afternoon and I'm sure Pittman's name will be discussed.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:35:55 AM)
I interviewed P.J. Fecko, the head coach of Cardinal Mooney, on a local radio show here in Youngstown last night and he confirmed that Ohio State is still one of the schools that Derrell Johnson has an interest in. We all might know about his situation a little bit more after this weekend. Nothing is imminent either way with Johnson, from what I've been told by people on and off the record, but Johnson should know more about his future very soon. Fecko did say on the radio show that Johnson is an NCAA qualifier academically, which we pretty much have all assumed by now, and that schools like Cincinnati and West Virginia are still courting Johnson also.

yooperbuck (Mar 30, 2006 11:38:53 AM)
Do you think Chris Wells will be here for 4 years if he is lights out, as we all hope?

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:38:53 AM)
Ideally I would like to say yes, but if he's all that he's built up to be on the college level, I'm guessing he'll go three-and-out. I talked with Chris on Saturday night at the state basketball tournament, he took in the McKinley rout, and he was all set to move into his dorm on Sunday, start class on Monday and begin Spring football today. I'm really excited for him. He's a great young man and he's big!

Guest (Mar 30, 2006 11:40:32 AM)
What do you think the staff will do at the backup QB position. Will Zwick be #2 or will the try to get minutes for Schoenhoft or Boeckman in the backup roll during mop up time.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:40:32 AM)
Hooter I sort of answered that question earlier if you get a chance to reread the chat. I think Zwick will remain as the backup this year. Barring injury, the majority of the playing time, if not nearly all of it, will go to Troy Smith anyway. Schoenhoft and Beckman will battle next spring.

GaryHousteau (Mar 30, 2006 11:42:26 AM)
With that last answer I'm going to call it a wrap. Thanks to all of you who submitted questions and thanks also to those of you who took the time to read through the chat at a later time. I'm excited for the spring session getting under way today and I very much look forward to the spring game on April 22. Have a great weekend and Go Bucks!

RS will have a huge advantage over Henton next season from the way I see it. No disrepect to Boeckman either, he certainly will be in the running next year as well, but I'm a big fan of Schoenhoft.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:14:44 AM)
Ed I think if Rehring plays guard next to Boone on the left side, they may have to change the astrological calender and add 13 more total eclipeses every year for the next couple of seasons. That would be one of the largest slabs of humanity to ever play on one side of the line at any level. The negative to that however is that experience is lacking with those two playing side-by-side, but I would love to see it. Barton is a fixture at the right side, barring injury, and he and Downing are formidable on that side. I like Rehring at guard if he can play there. Why not. We will likely find out this spring.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:19:32 AM)
It looks like tOSU are in on about 3 good OOS OL prospects this year. Is tOSU going to offer to fewer players and try to push harder for the ones they do offer?

(Mar 30, 2006 10:19:32 AM)

(Mar 30, 2006 10:26:14 AM)
Back on the QBs. I know JT likes having two starter quality QBs, and did so at YSU. He is also known to be loyal to seniors. All of that is great. In the past, how has he balanced that with getting some playing time for younger guys? Do you think whoever is #3 will see much playing time this season?

(Mar 30, 2006 10:26:14 AM)

(Mar 30, 2006 10:31:03 AM)
It seems that Ohio is loaded at RB this coming year. Do you see OSU taking one or more and if so who commits?

(Mar 30, 2006 10:31:03 AM)
buck I do see OSU taking at least one RB if not two in this class.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:31:54 AM)
Gary do you think that Josh Oglesby will be a buckeye

(Mar 30, 2006 10:31:54 AM)
Hi OSUfan...my gut says no! It's an honest answer.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:35:22 AM)
I saw a really good looking kicker last year from either St. Ed's or Benedictine in those early games against Pennsylvania. He even wore #85. Do you know his name and if he is D-1 calibar talent?

(Mar 30, 2006 10:35:22 AM)
Alex Steigerwald is his name, number 85, you are correct. I too liked the young man a whole lot. The last time I spoke to him during the season, Toledo was his only offer. He has a cannon for a leg and was right there with Bryan Wright IMHO. I'm not certain if he signed with Toledo or not but that could be researched quickly. He could kick or punt with equal aplomb.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:42:03 AM)
Gary- Give us your top 3 things to watch for in spring ball

(Mar 30, 2006 10:42:03 AM)

(Mar 30, 2006 10:46:52 AM)
IMO, tOSU went with a more mobile QB because of OL play or lack there of. With the quality and depth tOSU has now at OL will a \"pocket passer\" fit better in the system?

(Mar 30, 2006 10:46:52 AM)
I sort of alluded to this in another question a bit earlier. I believe, from all of my years watching JT, that when given a chance, he always likes to have the option of using his QB on the ground. Not as the leading rusher, like TS was looking like at one point, but as another method of controlling the ball and the clock. That being said, JT has never really been prolific ever with a pocket passer. Statistics at the position of his QB's point that out going back to YSU. So that naturally gives a more mobile QB an edge but it's not the determining factor.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:50:06 AM)
I know the question was asked earlier but I didn't see a response so I will ask again. The DT Barksdale has said that he will be joining the Ginn Bus Tour this summer. The question was whether or not that improves our chances with him and if Coach Ginn has said anything to you about him.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:50:06 AM)
Hi bigman...I purposely called Coach Ginn before the chat to get an answer for you but I couldn't reach him. Hopefully he will return my call soon. I have found, since he's been involved in his academy, that's it's harder and harder to reach him on the first try. I did talk to one of his assistants and he was aware of the name but didn't know the connection. When/if I find out I will pass along the information. I did find out that Glenville has a track meet in Columbus on Saturday, at Hilliard I believe, and they may be attending practice on Friday at Ohio State if they can work the logistics out.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:52:46 AM)
Who do you expect to emerge in the wide received pool behing Gonzo and Ginn? I think Hartline will emerge.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:52:46 AM)
Hi hooter...let's not rule out Roy Hall. I do talk to some of the players on occasion and I've heard a lot from them about Hall recently. I think he's poised to have a breakout campaign. I also think Hartline could find his way on the field this year. There's not a more ferocious competitor then him. Dukes should be right there and so should Robiskie. They receiving corps will be solid and deep no matter who's out there.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:56:26 AM)
I was just able to logon. Has Pittman been talked about yet? Everyone on won't let go that he is not hurt bad - yet I've heard it quoted that his problems are no big deal.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:56:26 AM)
Hi wwt...I've heard mixed reports on Pittman myself. I for one, hope that the staff errors on the side of caution with Pittman this spring. There is absolultely no reason for him to go all out and reinjure his hammy this spring. Not playing Pittman also shines the spotlight on the backup race between Haw, M. Wells and Beanie. Guys I really love all four TBs and the depth there is incredible. It should be a great battle this spring. But to be honest, I don't know the real extent of Pittman's injury because I've heard conflicting reports.

(Mar 30, 2006 10:59:45 AM)
The third thing I'm going to be watching for this spring, going back to an earlier question, is whether or not Jamario O'Neal is ready for prime time or not. My expectations for him are so high it's incredible. He certainly can be as good as he wants to be with all of his physical ability. He's a headhunter who truly has no idea about how good he can be at the college level. His just needs to understand the game so it slows down a lot for him, much like it did for Donte Whitner.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:02:52 AM)
Gary. If you found a magic lamp and the genie granted you three commits as wishes, which three players would you want verbals from?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:02:52 AM)
I'll take Ben Martin and be extremely happy. That being said, my other two wishes would include Oglesby and Clifford. I know that sounds like a canned answer but those three guys, along with Nate Oliver who is already in the fold, are head and shoulders above everybody else that OSU has a realistic chance with.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:04:03 AM)
Do you think JO will pick up where Donte left off in the film room?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:04:03 AM)
I sure hope so ed but Donte studied his rear end...to not only get better but to get to the league faster...and it worked well for him. I hope JO is just as hungry. The mental aspect is all that's missing from his game.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:04:50 AM)
Hey what are the chances of a night game this year?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:04:50 AM)
Hi kippy...I really don't have any insight on that although I'd love to see Penn State at home under the lights and return the favor from last year.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:06:45 AM)
Has Chris Smith picked a leader yet in his recruiting race?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:06:45 AM)
I don't know that answer hooter but I hope to talk to Chris sometime soon. I know I'll see him at the state track meet in June and I'll chat with him at length there. But I would guess right now that WVU would be right up at this time. I'm sure Mark Snyder is making a huge effort at Marshall for him as well. Smith will get his offers thats for sure. I just haven't spoken with him in a while.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
How will our offense match up with Iowa's defense at Iowa? Do you see a possible Penn St. type pitfall game?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
DePietro asked about OSU's offense against Iowas defense at Iowa next year and I think OSU's offense is going to give every defense fits next year. Iowa lost two great linebackers from last year's team but I'm sure they will still put up a fight in front of the home crowd. I do not see the same possible pitfall like Penn State last year because Troy Smith is so much better than he was against Penn State last year. OSU will be better than everybody they play next year because their offense should control every game.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:15:08 AM)
Any hope that Mike Roberts contributes at some point this year?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:15:08 AM)
Hooter I remember interviewing him when he was still in Canada and the high expectations that he had in coming to OSU with his abundance of speed and ability he displayed north of the border. For whatever reason, his skills up there have not translated to this country very well. Sure I'd love to see him contribute this year because he's been in the program so long now, but I certainly am not counting on it.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:18:52 AM)
Three of the youngsters we've heard little about are Washington, Russel and Denlinger. Any skinny? Do you believe Denlinger will cut the mustard inside? I guess we really hope so since Cotton and Abdullah have yet to step up.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:18:52 AM)
Ed I have heard good things on all three of those guys. Denlinger may be ready to make a push from what I've been told. Washington is just a pleasant surprise as well with his ability and Russell has not disappointed anyone in his first year eiter. Cotton and Abdallah are obviously enigmas to this point so that bodes well for Denlinger. I really like Larimore as well, not that he'll be ready to step in and play this year, but I'm excited about his future. Washington, I've been told, could surprise us all.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:21:08 AM)
How important do you think having no changes in the coaching staff will be in next year's equation for success?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:21:08 AM)
Continuity is very overlooked and it's something that puts Ohio State in a good position to have a great spring this year. I think it bodes well, especially on the defensive side of the ball, where a lot of inexperienced guys will be working in the two-deep from this point on.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:26:16 AM)
My candidate for biggest breakout this year is John Kerr, but I would also be very happy if it were Eric Haw. Your thoughts.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:26:16 AM)

(Mar 30, 2006 11:29:10 AM)
Can walkon Tyler Whaley crack the two deep this year? I know he got snaps in several games last year.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:29:10 AM)
Other than Whaley being from Ironton I don't know a whole lot about him. He might be a bit undersized like a Tyree but if he's good enough, he'll find his way onto the two deep.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
Hi Gary. Is Pittman ready or lite duty?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
I would guess lite duty but our Dave Biddle should find out a little bit more about Pittman after today's practice. JT will hold court with the media after practice this afternoon and I'm sure Pittman's name will be discussed.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:35:55 AM)

(Mar 30, 2006 11:38:53 AM)
Do you think Chris Wells will be here for 4 years if he is lights out, as we all hope?

(Mar 30, 2006 11:38:53 AM)
Ideally I would like to say yes, but if he's all that he's built up to be on the college level, I'm guessing he'll go three-and-out. I talked with Chris on Saturday night at the state basketball tournament, he took in the McKinley rout, and he was all set to move into his dorm on Sunday, start class on Monday and begin Spring football today. I'm really excited for him. He's a great young man and he's big!

(Mar 30, 2006 11:40:32 AM)
What do you think the staff will do at the backup QB position. Will Zwick be #2 or will the try to get minutes for Schoenhoft or Boeckman in the backup roll during mop up time.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:40:32 AM)
Hooter I sort of answered that question earlier if you get a chance to reread the chat. I think Zwick will remain as the backup this year. Barring injury, the majority of the playing time, if not nearly all of it, will go to Troy Smith anyway. Schoenhoft and Beckman will battle next spring.

(Mar 30, 2006 11:42:26 AM)
With that last answer I'm going to call it a wrap. Thanks to all of you who submitted questions and thanks also to those of you who took the time to read through the chat at a later time. I'm excited for the spring session getting under way today and I very much look forward to the spring game on April 22. Have a great weekend and Go Bucks!
