OSU Depth Chart Notebook

There were a few surprises when Ohio State's pre-spring depth chart was released on Thursday. But is it a solid list, or is the depth chart likely to change a great deal this spring? Here is a position-by-position look at the Buckeyes' depth chart with a few educated guesses of how it might change.

Ohio State released its pre-spring depth chart on Thursday. It is a list that is sure to change quite a bit in the next three-plus weeks, so let's go position-by-position and take a closer look.

QB: Troy Smith, Justin Zwick, Todd Boeckman, Rob Schoenhoft

The only possible surprise here is that Boeckman is still listed ahead of Schoenhoft. I expected to see them bracketed at No. 3. … Smith could be headed for a huge year. He is getting a lot of national hype, but I think he is even better than most give him credit for. Well, not our buddies at CollegeFootballNews.com. They are saying he could be this year's Vince Young. It doesn't get any better than that. (And I'm not even ready to go that far yet.) … Good to see Zwick still around. Would have been easy to bolt to a I-AA school and be assured of being the starter. He's going to look like the smart young man he is if Smith goes down with a serious injury.

TB: Antonio Pittman, Maurice Wells, Erik Haw, Chris Wells

Here is Exhibit A of why you can't pay too much attention to pre-spring depth charts. There is a better chance of George Mason making it to the Final Four than there is of Maurice Wells being the No. 2 tailback this year. Wait a minute. Bad example. How about this: There's a better chance John L. Smith won't personally blow a game for Michigan State this year. Is that better? … I look for the carries to break down like this for the 2006 season: Pittman 15-20 per game; Chris Wells 10-15 per game; Haw and Maurice Wells fighting for any scraps that are left.

FB: Stan White Jr., Dionte Johnson

No surprises here. Both of these underrated players will see the field a lot in 2006. White can also play the FB/TE hybrid position of H-back.

SE: Anthony Gonzalez, Roy Hall, Brian Hartline

Again, no surprises. Gonzalez is headed for a huge year, although he will draw a lot more attention this year from defenses. … I also expect Hall to rise up with a big year. He's a senior, he's carrying himself as a leader and will be a nice No. 3 target for Smith. … Hartline has speed to burn and is itching to play after nearly two full years of zero game action, save the 2005 Big 33 game.

FL: Ted Ginn Jr., Brian Robiskie, Albert Dukes

A mild upset that Robiskie is listed ahead of Dukes, but not really a big surprise. It was extremely telling that Robiskie didn't redshirt last year. The staff was high on him to even give him the option of playing. (Word is Robiskie could have redshirted, but the staff was torn and left it up to him.) Santonio Holmes was not given the same option in 2002.

TE: Rory Nicol, Marcel Frost, Brandon Smith

We have our first shocker. What did Frost need to do to win the job last year? Apparently he didn't do enough. I personally thought he was one of the best OSU tight ends in recent memory by the end of last season, but there is probably more than meets the eye here. Frost didn't see the field for the first half of last season, so there might be disciplinary issues. Or, I'm camping out in left field and it's as simple as Nicol being that good. We shall see, but I will be surprised if Frost isn't the starting tight end in 2006.

LT: Alex Boone, Daniel Dye

Boone played a lot as a true freshman last year and could be a future All-American. But Troy Smith hopes he's that good this year.

LG: Steve Rehring, Jon Skinner, Kyle Mitchum

I like this. Rehring will either be in the starting lineup, or he'll be the "sixth man" and will play a lot off the bench. A lot will depend on what happens at center. More on that in a minute. … Skinner and Mitchum were part of the 2004 recruiting class and could finally get their shot this year.

C: Doug Datish, Jim Cordle, Tyler Whaley

I am convinced this is a temporary listing and Cordle will eventually be the starter this year. Datish will likely slide down to guard and bump Rehring to Super Sub status. But, OSU's coaches are smart. They are not going say, "Here, freshman, job is yours." No, they are going to make Cordle earn it this spring and maybe into fall camp. But don't look too far into this depth chart. It's probably best for the team – short and long term – to have Cordle at center.

RG: T.J. Downing, Tim Schafer, Ben Person

Downing is going to be a mauler this year. I look for big things out of him (and Datish). … Say what you want about Schafer, but how many teams have a fifth year senior, former starter, that can come off the bench and play any of four positions on the line? It's a luxury. … Person is another member of the '04 O-line haul and it will be interesting to see how much he can contribute this year. Very impressive athlete coming out of high school.

RT: Kirk Barton, Doug Ebner

With apologies to Ebner, the big story here is that Barton will be made available for interviews in the very near future. Following a comment about the quarterback situation midway through the 2004 season (and we'll leave it at that) Barton has been a no-show at interviews. And yes, he was right. But he still shouldn't have said it. … Barton earned his keep in 2005 with a strong season, despite battling injuries.

DEFENSE:

DE: Jay Richardson, Alex Barrow, Doug Worthington

No surprises here. Could this be the year that Richardson breaks out? He has the talent, but will he have a four-cylinder motor as a senior, or can he upgrade to the V8? … Barrow can also play tackle; he will likely see the field a lot this year.

DT: Quinn Pitcock, Joel Penton, Todd Denlinger

Pitcock is one of the top interior linemen in the country. He'll be a first day NFL draft pick next year and is headed for a huge senior year at OSU. … Penton is solid. Nothing spectacular, but having a fifth-year senior of his stature will be a nice boost for the D-line. In high school as a linebacker, Penton shared Division III Player of the Year honors with Mike Kudla.

DT: David Patterson, Sian Cotton, Nader Abdallah

I was not high on Patterson going into last year, but he showed me something. In fact, he had a very solid year. If he can take that next step and have an even better senior year, this defensive line could be very good. It is very experienced on what is otherwise a very green defense. … The Buckeyes need Cotton to step up and provide depth, but there are still concerns about him. He's very talented; spring will be telling for him.

DE: Lawrence Wilson, Vernon Gholston, Ryan Williams

Wilson is a star-in-the-making. He got his feet wet as a true freshman last year and now he's a starter. Don't expect Will Smith, but if he's close, no one will complain. … Gholston is another talented young rush end. Like Barrow, he should see decent time in a reserve role this year. Spring will be key for him after missing the 2005 season with a hand injury.

WLB: Marcus Freeman, Austin Spitler, Ryan Lukens, Ross Homan

If you're going to replace A.J. Hawk – one of the best linebackers in school history – this is the way to do it. Talk about re-loading. Freeman isn't Hawk, but he might be the next best thing. And he's got three years of eligibility left thanks to his blessing-in-disguise injury last year. (Unless you're of the opinion that he would have been the difference in the Texas and Penn State games last year, in which case you've already called me an idiot.)

MLB: John Kerr, Mike D'Andrea, Chad Hoobler

There's your first really big surprise. I've been saying for months watch out for Kerr, but I didn't think he'd already be penciled in as the starter in the middle. He was the leading tackler in the Big Ten as a freshman at Indiana in 2002 and was impressive on special teams for the Buckeyes last year. I like the move. The kid's a player. … The D'Andrea Saga moves into its fifth year and the jury is still out on the young man ranked ahead of Hawk and Bobby Carpenter coming out of high school. Talent has never been the problem; staying healthy has. Could this be the year he finally breaks out? Who knows, but I think everyone will agree it's good to still have him around. … Hoobler might be somewhat buried on the depth chart right now, but don't forget about him. Worse case, he'll play all over special teams.

SLB: James Laurinaitis, Curtis Terry, Larry Grant

Can Laurinaitis hold off Grant this spring? This is one of the key position battles that will be interesting to monitor. … Terry is also in the mix, but I think it comes down to Laurinaitis and Grant. … Again, a lot of depth for a team that's replacing three excellent linebackers.

CB: Malcolm Jenkins, Mike Roberts, Andre Amos, Sirjo Welch

You know the cornerbacks are young when Jenkins is the savvy veteran of the group. Yeah, there are older guys in the mix, but he's the only one with a lot of game experience on the island. He is a future NFL player and fans should enjoy his last two years at OSU. (Just a guess.) … You're not buying that Amos is third string? Neither am I. In fact, look for him to start at the other corner spot.

CB: Antonio Smith, Donald Washington, Brandon Underwood, Kurt Coleman, Shaun Lane

Smith is a special teams stalwart, but he's probably not going to start at corner. As already mentioned, look for Amos in there. … Definitely more depth here than I thought with Washington, Underwood, Coleman and Lane. Maybe the cornerback situation isn't as dire as I initially thought. Bad news is you should always go with your first reaction.

FS: Nick Patterson, Brandon Mitchell, Devon Lyons

Interesting, interesting. Patterson gets the nod over fifth-year senior Mitchell, who is nearing his graduate degree. Patterson was one of the top safeties in the country coming out of high school, so this isn't extremely surprising. He played well on special teams last year. … Lyons is a converted wide receiver and this could prove to be a very smart move. It's solid depth if nothing else. But I tend to think he'll see the field this year. Spring will be a good time for him to prove himself.

SS: Jamario O'Neal, Anderson Russell, Curt Lukens.

O'Neal has a tough job replacing Donte Whitner, but he's an impressive young athlete. … That's not a subtle message the staff is sending putting Russell at strong safety. That means he can hit. The safeties are interchangeable in OSU's system, but O'Neal and Russell are the headhunters. … Lukens, an oft-injured player the staff used to be very high on, provides solid depth.

K: Ryan Pretorius, Aaron Pettrey

I can just hear other Big Ten coaches jealously admiring Tressel in their best Joker impersonation: "Where does he get all these wonderful toys?" Best kicker in school history, Mike Nugent, graduates, replace him with 10th-year senior Josh Huston (OK, sixth year). Huston graduates, replace him with 27-year-old former professional rugby player Pretorius, who hails from South Africa. Pretorius comes complete with a big accent, and a bigger leg. The protégé of former NFL kicker Gary Anderson (also a native of South Africa) has three years of eligibility remaining at OSU (after redshirting last year) and is determined to make it to the NFL. Accuracy will be interesting to monitor; he definitely has the leg.

P: A.J. Trapasso, Tyson Gentry, John Thoma

Trapasso was solid as a freshman last year, averaging 40.1 yards per punt. Tressel has a history of getting marked improvement out of his punters, so expect even more from Trapasso this year.
