O-Line Revs Up For Hoot n' Holler

For offensive linemen like T.J. Downing and Kirk Barton, the highlight of spring might be the first day of pads and the hoot n' holler drill. The Buckeyes got after it Saturday morning and tailback Chris Wells was one player that stood out. Jim Bollman also discussed the latest developments on the offensive line and the quarterback position.

According to the players, it was a spirited first day of full-contact practice for Ohio State Saturday morning.

The Buckeyes began the day with the ever-popular hoot n' holler drill. For players such as right guard T.J. Downing, it was like Christmas in April.

"Yeah, we do the hoot n' holler the first day of pads to start things off," Downing said. "We're actually out there fighting against each other. And you step back and look at it and say, ‘You can't be fighting your teammates.' But we're out there like a bunch of kids again, going after it, banging against each other.

"It's a total physical toughness drill. There's no technique involved. It's just getting after the guy across from you and trying to push him back. You collide. It's like rams out in the field just banging heads with each other. It's very tough and after the tailback busts through the line, everybody collides, the defense gets fired up if they made a good play and everybody starts fighting each other and swinging. And then you've got coaches like Luke Fickell jumping in there and he's swinging at us too. It gets wild."

Freshman tailback Chris Wells made a strong impression on his teammates during the hoot n' holler.

"He did well," Downing said. "He ran through there on the first one and ran over the defensive back and got in there for the touchdown. Those are things that you try and do during spring: turn heads like that."

Added right tackle Kirk Barton: "He's a strong kid. He lowered a shoulder on one of the guys and knocked him into next Tuesday; next Tuesday's practice. It was pretty neat to see. I wasn't here for the other guy they compare him to (Maurice Clarett), but it was good to see. You always wonder about how freshman are. Are they going to be a little nervous; a little afraid? But he pretty much proved that he wants to play."

As for Downing, he is carrying himself as the leader of the offensive line. Fellow fifth-year senior Doug Datish is currently sitting out as he recovers from shoulder surgery. Downing had a good junior season, but really wants to take that next step as a senior.

"I feel good," Downing said. "My biggest thing is just being able to maintain footspeed along with the strength. I've always been very strong, but I'm concentrating on the footspeed and being able to move well and being good in space. Those are things that I really want to work on and getting out here and working during the spring is really helping me out a lot."

Datish is penciled in as the starting center, but with him out, a pair of young players are battling for the job.

"Tyler Whaley and Jimmy Cordle have been splitting," Downing said. "They've both been doing a real good job and we're pleased so far."

Many believe that Cordle is the center of the future for the Buckeyes. In fact, there is a good chance he will be the starter this season. (Which would allow Datish to slide down to guard or tackle).

"He could be," Downing said. "I tell you what, I've seen some great things out of him. Especially last year in the spring, he came in and he was just 17 years old and I think he turned a lot of heads with the things he was doing. I think he could play there this year. I see some great things out of him.

"And I think Tyler Whaley can play center this year. Size-wise, Tyler is not the tallest guy out there, but he's got a lot of heart."

Downing was asked if he thinks Datish will end up being the starting center.

"We'll see what happens," he said. "I think it all depends on what happens with the guard spots and how things pan out at tackle with Alex (Boone) on the left side. If center is the best fit for him, I think that's where he is going to be."

Jon Skinner, Ben Person and Kyle Mitchum are third-year sophomores who are all battling for backup positions.

"They are all playing guard," Downing said. "We're actually mixing Skinner in a little bit at center as a backup in case something would happen. Skinner has been playing some right guard with me over there and he's doing real well. I see some good things out of him. Person and Mitchum are over on the left side and I see some good things from those guys as well. They're hungry and they're kind of in the same position I was in when I came in here. I sat the bench for two years and that's kind of what they did. My third year, I was hungry and I wanted to get out there and play and show that I can do some things here. I think that's the position they're in and they're ready to get out there and do it."

Downing also believes there is decent depth at the tackle position.

"We've got (Tim) Schafer over at guard, but he's popping out and playing some right tackle," he said. "Steve Rehring has been popping out when he's not at guard and has been playing a little left tackle. We've got a lot of guys mixing in there. We've also got Josh Kerr, who is a new player. Those guys that are backing up at the tackle spots are doing well."

Even with the losses of Nick Mangold and Rob Sims, Downing fully expects OSU to have one of the best lines in the Big Ten this season.

"We take a lot of pride in getting the job done," Downing said. "The game starts with the offensive line. That's where it's at. You wouldn't have 50, 60-yard touchdown passes to Ted Ginn if there wasn't protection. So, we take a lot of pride in that. Troy (Smith) and those guys keep us very motivated and keep us upbeat. We don't always hear our names in the papers and we wish we could, but we take pride in our job and we're going to be very good this year."

Barton also thinks the O-line is in good shape heading into the season. Now, it's just a matter of filling out the two-deep.

"We've got to find depth," Barton said. "We just need to fill some spots and find the best group of guys so we have the best starting five we can possibly have."

Barton missed five games last season with an injury, but he was still one of the top players on the team.

"Well, percentage-wise, in the games I started, I had a winning grade in all of them," Barton said. "So, that's a plus. The last four games I played I was over 90 percent, so that's kind of where I want to keep going this season. Northwestern I was 96 percent and that's like no MAs (missed assignments) and maybe just a few poor techniques, because I got my man on every play. That's what you want to shoot for every single game. Once you prove you can do it, that's your goal for every game."

Now as a fourth-year junior, Barton is one of the leaders of the group. He's learned some lessons along the way – including what was basically a one-year ban from talking to the media – but he's one of the players the young linemen look up to.

But even Barton admits he doesn't feel like a leader quite yet.

"I'm still young," he said with a laugh. "(Downing and Datish) are the grizzled veterans. It's kind of weird because I think about all the guys that have been here from like Shane (Olivea) to Will Smith, and now Nick (Mangold) and Rob (Sims). Guys keep leaving and you're still there."

Barton is one of those players that loves practicing. He could take or leave conditioning, but when it comes to strapping it up and actually playing football, he can't get enough of it.

"I feel great and it's great to be back," he said. "You have winter conditioning at 6 a.m. and you're running around and running through cones and stuff like that, but it's not really football. So, you get on the field and it's like we finally get to play football. And it's just a joy. The drills are great for mental toughness and getting your wind up and stuff, but it's not football. This is like the gift at the end of all that conditioning."

Barton says there are a few areas of his game he wants to improve this spring.

"Personally, you just want to work on your weaknesses," he said. "Like, just refine your pass blocking skills. Using your hands, being more precise, coming off lower, better footwork… those are my goals. And then just listen to Coach Bolls (offensive line coach Jim Bollman), because he knows what he's talking about."

Ohio State returns eight starters to the offense, which is expected to be the strength of the team for the first time in the Jim Tressel era.

"It definitely helps," Barton said. "A lot of us have a lot of big game experience. And that's what we're all shooting for is to play in the big game at the end of the season."

Barton talked more about the hoot n' holler drill and why the players enjoy it so much.

"There's always a few scraps," he said. "It gets heated. Guys get pushed back and it's like World War III. But it was pretty fun. It's competition. You don't want to get pushed back. You are going to push him. It's a lot of fire. I like watching that stuff and I like doing that stuff. It's a fun drill."

Bollman Talks O-Line And More

Bollman says the key of spring for him is finding the top seven or eight linemen so when OSU opens camp in August, he knows exactly what he's working with.

With the top six likely set (Datish, Downing, Barton, Boone, Rehring, Cordle) that means there are just one or two "jobs" up for grabs. In addition to the five starting spots, Bollman likes to rotate two or three players off the bench.

More than anything, Bollman wants his linemen to be technically sound. That is what is going to earn them playing time. You can't throw a guy in there that is going to miss an assignment and get the quarterback or running back blown up.

"It doesn't matter how good you are at fundamentals, there's always something you can get better at," Bollman said. "We've started from square one."

Bollman seems pleased with the progress of the 6-8, 320-pound Boone.

"We were fortunate last year when Kirk went down that Alex was able to get five games under his belt," he said. "So, that's always invaluable to have that kind of experience. And we're doing some things to play to his capabilities."

Bollman believes that spring ball is important. He looks around and sees several young players that need a lot of work.

"At this level, I think you need it," he said. "After these 15 days, our centers – whoever they might be – will have a good feel for what they need to do. As will everyone else and we will continue that progress when we come back in August. It's really a beneficial learning thing for us that way and it gives us a chance to maybe experiment a little bit on offense."

Bollman also put his offensive coordinator's hat on and talked about the quarterbacks. He has already been impressed with the leadership Troy Smith has displayed. Not surprised; but impressed.

"I think it's very typical of a lot of guys that have came through here and this is going to be your senior year and they're really getting ready to have the last great year," Bollman said. "Last year's seniors did a great job with that and Troy is following their footsteps and is doing everything that he needs to do and is leading the team."

Justin Zwick decided to stick around for his final year and it could prove to be a very wise decision if Smith goes down with an injury at some point.

Todd Boeckman and Rob Schoenhoft are also battling to be Smith's backup.

"We've got three pretty good guys competing," Bollman said. "This is the closest thing you can get to being in a game. When you're going live against our defense, sometimes that's harder than being in the game. So, it's a good learning time for those guys."

Bollman was asked if the listed depth chart is accurate at the quarterback position. (There was some talk that Schoenhoft had jumped Boeckman.)

"Yeah, right now they are going by age: Justin, Todd, Rob," he said.

As for the hoot n' holler drill, not just the players get a kick out of it. The coaches also very much enjoy it (and not just Fickell).

"It's a fun thing for us to do to start practice," Bollman said. "We do it twice a year. We'll do it in August the first day of pads. We get a little excitement going and the guys have a lot of fun with it."

Bollman is not exactly the type of guy that's going to gush about players. But he said the 6-2, 230-pound Wells definitely caught his eye Saturday morning.

"He's in the learning process," Bollman said. "He has a pretty good idea of what to do with the ball once he gets it. He heads in the right direction. The more he learns, the quicker he'll play. He seems to be having fun. It's a big advantage for him to get here early. This will really help him in the fall as he can get some of the kinks out."

Bollman was asked how Wells looked in the hoot n' holler.

"He was fine," he said. "He got the ball and scored. It didn't take him three plays. He got the ball and scored in one."

Were the words from Downing and Barton true? Did Wells destroy a defensive back at the goal line?

"He did," Bollman said. "I didn't get a clear view; I was standing behind the blockers. But yeah, he did. I'll look at it as soon as we go over (the practice film). It was good to see him have a successful opportunity."
