Nicol Glad To Be Back On The Field

For Ohio State sophomore tight end Rory Nicol, the 2005 season was a tough one to swallow. Nicol missed the year with a torn ligament as the Buckeyes struggled to even fill the tight end spot at times. But Nicol is healthy and ready to go during spring ball. He and tight ends coach John Peterson talked Thursday about his progress and the status of the tight end spot.

The 2005 season was a tough one for Ohio State tight end Rory Nicol.

Nicol was primed to back up Ryan Hamby at tight end last season. But he suffered a torn ligament in his foot during the second week of preseason camp and was lost for the year.

"I just jumped for a ball," said Nicol, who redshirted and will be a third-year sophomore in the fall. "I didn't hit anybody or land on anybody. But I ended up tearing a ligament in my foot. The first MRI showed it was pretty severe. The timetable they gave me was anywhere from four weeks to four months, which is kind of rare to hear.

"I am back from that. I had a good winter and I rehabbed hard on that all year. It was hard sitting out, but in the long run it's good because it gained me another year. I feel like I am back and I'm strong and I'm having a good spring."

Nicol said it was hard to sit by and watch the Buckeyes post a 10-2 record without him last fall – particularly when Hamby also got hurt and the Buckeyes were scratching to fill the tight end position.

"To come in and redshirt, that may be a little easier," Nicol said. "Not that it's easy for anybody, but the fact you've never played at the college level you don't really know, I guess, that you can do it.

"But I got a taste of it as a freshman and to sit there last year that killed me. God does everything for a reason, and I am going to find that out here."

OSU tight ends coach John Peterson said he tried to keep Nicol involved with the team and the tight ends unit during his lost season.

"Personally, I had gone through some of those things as a player," Peterson said. "I was able to call him every Friday night just to touch base whether we were home or away. That's one of those things when you're not a part of the travel squad is missing that Friday night with the team or that Saturday morning pregame. He's come back mentally with a passion and understanding."

Nicol said it wasn't until late in the winter conditioning program that he felt healthy.

"I tore a ligament in my foot and the winter program was strenuous," he said. "That's a lot of stop and go running. It was rough on the foot. I made it through, but it took a long time."

Nicol is battling with junior Marcel Frost and sophomore Brandon Smith at the tight end spot. Versatility is a big thing with the tight ends, Nicol said.

"We're really working on that with all of our guys across the board at tight end," he said. "We've got some speed and we've got some power. We have some guys heavier than other guys. We're all around the Big Ten style of tight end. Stretching the seam is something I think we can do. I think we'll see that a little bit more.

"In talking with (receivers coach Darrell) Hazell, if you have a tight end that can consume some of the middle of the field and be a dominant blocker and a good receiver, it opens up your offense. It's endless what you can do. Look at pro teams with good tight ends. Their offenses just expand and expand."

Nicol discussed the overall progress of the offense.

"I think every day our offense is coming more and more together and our offensive line is starting to mesh," he said. "We lost two guys up front, but we have replaced them and things are going pretty smooth.

"We want to be an offense than can do anything to anybody at any time. We talk about being great in all aspects of the game. We're thinking about that when we have one back or two backs, two tights or no tights. We want to be able to do whatever all the time and be successful with it.

"Last year, we were able to establish the run with Pitt (Antonio Pittman). He ran for 1,300 yards. Now, we've got some more guys coming in. We're going to be a power team, but we're also going to be explosive."

And part of that could be improved play from the tight end spot, Nicol said.

"I think the tight end role will expand this year," he said. "We're doing some more with the tight end position. I think we might even see more two-tight end play than we have seen in the recent past.

"Depending on how we do and how we produce, that will decide our role. But we have a chance to be a part of the run game and also a part of the passing game."

As a freshman in 2004, Nicol served as a backup to Hamby. He caught three passes for 34 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown in OSU's 33-7 loss at Iowa.

He was asked if he spent last season thinking a lot about that scoring play.

"I watched it in films and we took it back and forth once or twice," he said. "It was something special to me, I guess, but the situation with that game was kind of tough. Your first collegiate catch to go for a touchdown, that was fun."

Peterson's Take

Peterson, a former OSU offensive lineman, is back for his third season as the tight ends coach. He likes what he sees so far this spring.

"These guys are just tremendous, big, strong athletes," he said. "They have to master the run game, the pass game and be great pass protectors as well. It is a very tough position to play. I think we have some guys who are athletic and have good hands.

"But the big thing that opens up the offense is having tight ends who can single block the perimeter in the run game and who can protect. That allows the offensive line to free up inside."

Just having a full group to work with is a bonus, Peterson said.

"The big thing is we have healthy tight ends this spring," he said. "Any time we have guys who are healthy and working hard, we're going to get better. It's great to see guys come back from adversity. They've learned that football is very fragile and it can be taken away on any play."

Peterson agrees with Nicol that the tight ends have a chance to bring some play making ability to the offense in 2006.

"All three guys, Brandon, Marcel and Rory, show the ability to stretch the field," he said. "But they are also big bodies who can run. They can run the short routes and the intermediate routes across the middle of the field."

With Hamby and Nicol out, Frost was moved from defensive end and ended up doing a bang-up job. He started three of the last five games and ended up with seven catches for 70 yards.

"Marcel is a player that just keeps growing and learning," Peterson said. "The more that he can play the game of football, the better he can become. The more he plays and practices every day, he improves."

Peterson was asked whether tight end signees Andy Miller or Jake Ballard could help the Buckeyes in 2006.

"You never know," he said. "We're excited that we've got two more coming in and growing the depth at this position."
