Jersey Scrimmage Notebook

This jersey scrimmage notebook is packed with comments from Ohio State's Erik Haw, Maurice Wells, Brian Robiskie, Marcus Freeman and Vernon Gholston. The defense prevailed over the offense, 69-68, and earned the scarlet practice jerseys. Haw and Wells are battling for time at tailback; Robiskie is one of the rising stars at WR; and Freeman and Gholston are each coming off medical redshirts.

Ohio State's defense topped the offense 69-68 at Saturday's jersey scrimmage, but the play of the day was a 71-yard touchdown run from tailback Erik Haw. The sophomore went over right tackle, cut back across the field and sped down the sideline for the score.

"The line blocked tremendously and got a lot of push," Haw said. "When that offensive line is getting movement, it makes it a lot easier for the running back. I saw the seam and I just went with my instinct and just went with it.

"I have some family that are professional backs and they always talk about getting yardage with the cutback. When you cut across the grain, (wide receivers coach Darrell) Hazell teaches the receivers to do backside blocking, so you want to cut behind their blocks because there's a lot of hidden yardage back there."

Haw talked more about his football bloodlines.

"Brandon Hall, who played with the Seattle Seahawks, is now in NFL Europe," he said. "And my cousin, Lance Moore, who played with the Browns for a little bit, he's over in NFL Europe too. They know a lot more than I do, so I just try and learn as much as possible from them."

On Haw's touchdown jaunt, a defensive back appeared to have the angle on him at about the 30. But Haw showed his 4.2 speed and blew past him.

"Just trying to showcase what I can do," Haw said. "But it was basically all the offensive line. When the offensive line is moving, it makes me look a lot better. I can score and get the glory, but when the offensive line is moving and pushing those defensive linemen into the linebackers, I can focus on the defensive backs."

Haw, who carried 14 times for 96 yards during the jersey scrimmage, was asked what areas of his game he wants to improve this spring.

"Coach (Jim) Tressel always talks about running low so they can't get square hits on you," he said. "I've been trying to concentrate on that. And you can always get in better shape. I want to focus and concentrate on the little things."

Haw appears to be battling for the No. 3 tailback job behind Antonio Pittman and Chris Wells. But he's determined to prove that he can be the Buckeyes' starter.

"Always want to be number one," Haw said. "That's my goal and I always feel that I'm the best back. But not knocking the other running backs. All the running backs did good today. I want to be number one, but first on my mind is winning a national championship. That's what I'm shooting for."

Haw says he weighs 215 pounds, about three more than last season.

"I'm trying to lower my body fat and just be as solid as possible," he said.

* Another running back that wants to put on weight is sophomore Maurice Wells. He wants to lose the label of being a scat back, while keeping all of his speed.

"Yeah, I've gained about five, six pounds," Wells said. "I'm probably about 192 now. I want to be about 195 for the start of the season and hopefully keep my speed and agility and hopefully that helps."

On Saturday, Wells carried 13 times for 52 yards. He had a few impressive runs up the middle where he didn't get a lot of yards, but showed toughness and didn't get knocked backwards.

"I feel that I performed OK," he said. "Hopefully I'll get more opportunities like that. If you're not out there working and getting reps, you're not going to get better. I feel that I played OK."

Wells believes that this spring is an important time for him.

"I just want to work on my whole game this spring," he said. "I don't know if there's any one or two particular aspects that I want to work on. I just want to raise my game to the next level."

Like Haw, Wells is not surrendering the tailback job to anyone. Pittman is entrenched as the starter and many feel that Chris Wells is a shoe-in to be the backup. But Mo Wells is going to compete for the job.

"Of course who wouldn't want to be the starter and get all the carries and be the man," he said. "But if the coaches feel that somebody else is better for that, then so be it. I'm going to play my role on the team and hopefully win a national championship. I just need to play hard and do whatever the coaches ask me to do."

* Another young player that the coaching staff is excited about is sophomore wide receiver Brian Robiskie. In fact, Hazell thinks Robiskie will be OSU's No. 4 receiver in 2006.

"I think I've tried to really make it a point to use this spring as a springboard into this year," Robiskie said. "I think I've taken it upon myself to use this spring to really work hard. I came out the first practice and just tried to make an impression on the coaches. I want to have an opportunity to get out on the field and I'm using this spring to try and accomplish that."

Robiskie had three receptions for 31 yards at Saturday's scrimmage. He runs crisp routes and has good hands, but his mental approach might be his best asset.

"Well, coming up and being a coach's son, I think I'm football smart," Robiskie said. "I prepare myself and I think that's what I do best. I'm fast, I can catch, I can do all those things. But I think it comes down to technique and knowing what your defender is going to do."

Robiskie was impressive enough last year in preseason camp that the coaching staff decided not to redshirt him.

"I came in and I was hearing a lot of talk," Robiskie said. "You hear that you're young and they've got a lot of receivers ahead of you. You hear that talk, but I tried to block it out and think of all the spots as open. I wanted to take the mindset of coming in and working for a spot, which is the same thing I'm doing right now. I'm just trying to make that same impression."

Robiskie has nice size for a Big Ten receiver at 6-3, 200 pounds.

"I've added about 10 pounds since I came in," Robiskie said. "Tried to put on some weight – the right kind of weight – and keep my speed. I'm trying to get stronger and eat the right things."

Robiskie can't say enough about senior quarterback Troy Smith. Having a veteran quarterback is a nice luxury for a young receiver.

"I think that's big because any time you're around Troy, he's trying to help you," Robiskie said. "Like you said, being the fourth receiver coming in, I might not have that experience on the field, but I know when I come on the field I'm going to be able to lean on him for support. If I ask him questions, he's going to be there to respond and help me with anything I need."

Defense Steps Up

Sophomore linebacker Marcus Freeman redshirted last season after coming down with an injury in preseason camp. He is back better than ever and is expected to be one of the leaders of the defense in 2006. He recorded six tackles at Saturday's scrimmage.

"Just trying to get after it," Freeman said. "Last year I had to sit out and this year, honestly, my goal is to just win a starting spot. I'm just going out there and playing hard and doing the best that I can do."

Freeman was happy the defense was able to earn the scarlet jerseys.

"It feels good," he said. "It's a tradition around here. You want to get those scarlet jerseys. We're young and we have a lot to work on, but I feel that we're jelling together as a team which is going to help us."

Freeman was calling the defensive signals when he was on the field on Saturday. The coaches obviously have a lot of trust in him.

"Yeah, that's something that I did in high school and I'm used to," he said. "I like being in front of the defense. It's a leadership role."

Freeman talked more about sitting out last year and how difficult it was on him.

"It was tough," he said. "Trying to make yourself want to learn, but knowing you're not going to play. It's a tough thing and you have to have a lot of discipline. But now I'm back and it feels a lot better."

Freeman has been impressed with junior college transfer linebacker Larry Grant thus far.

"He's looking good," he said. "He came in early and he's still a young guy, but he's learning the system and has a lot of ability. Once he learns it and puts it all together, he's going to be a great player."

As for freshman linebacker Ross Homan, Freeman is very familiar with his situation. Two years ago, it was Freeman who graduated high school early so he could participate in spring ball.

"It benefited me tremendously," Freeman said. "Not just academically, but getting to learn the game. Ross can handle a lot. He has great instincts, he tackles well and has a good mental approach."

* Sophomore defensive end Vernon Gholston also missed the 2005 season with an injury. But now he's back and is expected to be in the rotation at defensive end.

On Saturday, Gholston unofficially had four tackles and a sack.

"I think I did pretty good," Gholston said. "There's a couple things I still need to work on. But overall it was a good day. It felt good to get out here, especially since last year I had to redshirt. It's definitely good to get out here in game-like conditions and hit and get some work in."

Gholston is battling with Jay Richardson, Lawrence Wilson and Alex Barrow for playing time at defensive end.

"I just want to do whatever I can to help the team out," Gholston said. "Like you said, we lost (Mike) Kudla last year, but we've got a lot of great guys coming up. At end, we've got Lawrence, Alex, Jay and me. We're all just competing and trying to do the best we can for our team. The coaches have told us that whatever is best for the team, that's what we're going to do."

Gholston didn't seem especially elated about winning the scarlet jerseys. He was just pleased to leave the Horseshoe as a winner.

"I've been in white since I've been here and I've become accustomed to the white," he said. "But it's definitely good to get the win. That's all I was worried about."

The 6-4, 260-pound Gholston was asked to give his strengths on the football field.

"I would say I try to be physical," he said. "I want to work at my pass rush skills and get better at that. I just want to work on finishing the play."
