Housteau Chat Archive: April 13

Gary Housteau stopped by this afternoon to chat with Bucknuts subscribers about recruiting and spring football. We have a transcript below.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:53:31 AM)
Greetings and salutations!

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:54:04 AM)
I wish the spring game was this Saturday...don't you?

kleintime16 (Apr 13, 2006 10:54:55 AM)
Good afternoon Gary

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:54:55 AM)
Kleintime is in the house! Yo dawg check this out..as Randy Jackson would say on American Idol.

DantheMan (Apr 13, 2006 10:55:29 AM)
hi

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:55:29 AM)
Dan is the man! What's happening?

boulderbuck (Apr 13, 2006 10:56:41 AM)
why such enthusiasm?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:56:41 AM)
Hi boulderbuck...I think it's the weather and longer daylight and I got up this morning and went for a long walk down Mill Creek Park and I'm just feeling good today!

kleintime16 (Apr 13, 2006 10:58:13 AM)
So Gary, have you seen the upcoming ohio highs top 100

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:58:13 AM)
Klein I haven't yet. Steve emailed it to me as an attachment and I can't pick up attachments on my laptop for some reason. I'm a cut and paste kind of guy. I've seen snippets of it though. What's on your mind with that?

DantheMan (Apr 13, 2006 10:59:44 AM)
... I'm working and wondering who told Nevada Buck that COleman and Homan will be All Americans and that Wells will be a deity.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 10:59:44 AM)
I might have slipped him those comments Dan...lol! I can vouch for Homan and Wells. I haven't seen Coleman in person so I can go that far out on a limb but from what everyone says about him...his tree might be right there next to Homan's and Wells trees in the Buckeye Grove.

slim (Apr 13, 2006 11:01:35 AM)
hello gary.....will you be attending anymore track meets this spring?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:01:36 AM)
You bet I will slim. The thing is I got another new lens and I'm trying to get some practice so I'll at least be competitant before the state meet. But I love watching football players run track. It gives you another dimension of their ability and it helps me evaluate them as a football player believe it or not. I got to see them in 3D, two dimensions just doesn't do it for me. But yes I will. You got news for me?

kleintime16 (Apr 13, 2006 11:04:48 AM)
any suprises on top ... the big thing on the board is that belton will be ranked higher than smith, any feelings on that?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:04:49 AM)
Boy that's a tough one kleintime...I'm a big Chris Smith fan but I tried to watch Belton real close down in San Antonio because he is so highly touted. Smith was supposed to attend but was a no show. I also talked to the QB guru coach who was in charge of their drills and he liked Belton a lot. I can't talk negatively about either of them but if I had to pick one guy to be my QB with all things being equal this year in Ohio...I would take Smith. I watched Smith throw at a combine last year and I think he's more mobile as well. That's just my humble opinion.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:05:20 AM)
Good question klein. I do like both however.

JimC (Apr 13, 2006 11:07:40 AM)
Hi Gary, Who's the first player to go in the Spring Draft? Ginn? Wells?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:07:41 AM)
Hi Jim that's a layup and half question...I think you all know what I would say there. Although I absolutely love both of these guys. My two favorite high school Buckeyes to watch. And if you missed it, he turned 21 yesterday. Happy Birthday TGII.

kleintime16 (Apr 13, 2006 11:08:21 AM)
What do you think about the news of LB Eric Schwartz walkign on?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:08:21 AM)
Good for him kleintime! I'm sure he's pursuing a dream!

Guest (Apr 13, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
Gary , I know its early but who are your top 2 players in Ohio for the 2008 recruiting season?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
Hi woody...Martin and Oliver for 2007. For 2008 I'll give you five Shawntel Rowell, John Adams, Brandon Beachum, Michael Zordich and Darius Ashley. If I have to name two I'd go with Rowell and Beachum.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:13:51 AM)
Another great question. Again I can only with go with guys I've seen in person to this point. Adams is a terrific DB/Punt return guy from Buchtel. There are many more like Kordell Scott from Glenville. Glenville has about four or five guys that are ridiculous. I'm sure I'm missing some other really good ones but those five came to mind almost instantly.

buckicrazy (Apr 13, 2006 11:16:49 AM)
Hi Gary, Do you think one of the DE (Barrow) will move down to DT?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:16:50 AM)
I've only seen Barrow play in the two all-star games in his high school career and he impressed me in both games with his moves and instincts on the defensive line. I was a middle guard in college and I appreciate playmaking skills on the defensive line like David Patterson possesses and I thought Barrow did as well. He's yet to translate those skills to his college career but I think he can play inside. I think Denlinger and Larimore might become fixtures inside in the future though. But for the record I like Barrow and I still have high expecatations for him as a Buckeye.

buckeyeinsaline (Apr 13, 2006 11:22:17 AM)
Gary, What is latest on Offensive Linemen that OSU is after for 2007 class? Can we secure out of state big names?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:22:17 AM)
I put zero stock in OOS offensive lineman coming into the fold outside of any neighboring states. I think the Instate linemen are about a year away. I've heard good and bad about Blankenship to be honest with you. There's a Michigan lineman or two I've heard about. I really don't know. I'm hoping to eyeball a couple good ones at the Nike Combine on May 5 and OSU's camp on June 23. As far as Oglesby is concerned...the ND press on the internet make it sound like they have Olgesby and even Ben Martin tucked away already. I do think Olgesby may be ticketed to S. Bend but I'm still hanging in there on the Martin lottery. The O-line situation doesn't look great at all this year and they need some more bodies in the pipeline.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:23:29 AM)
I just answered a question for Buckeyeinsaline about offensive linemen and it hasn't shown up yet on my screen.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:24:01 AM)
It looks like there's either a delay or I'm not getting the answers to populate.

slim (Apr 13, 2006 11:28:48 AM)
gary, besides b. saine who would you take this year at tailback and why......

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:28:48 AM)
Hi slim..besides Saine this year I would take Jordan Mabin because he's a terrific running back and then if it doesn't work out for him on offense he's proven he can play defense. Mabin is a terrific football player. He's got ridiculous skills...the kind that make you laugh when you're standing on the sideline watching him. My next two guys are Herron and Morgan Williams. Herron has the best body of all four of them, even Saine who is built well. Herron is ferocious. He's brother plays for MSU and Danny has the same type of mental demeanor. I know a lot of people are high on Morgan Williams and he's a good one too. And if he runs for 2,400 yards again with four new offensive linemen in front of him again this year then he'll have proven his worthiness again. I like all four guys and Simpson as well but I haven't seen him in person. I like William Johnson as a sleeper from Centerville but I don't know if he's playing this year. I eyeballed him as a sophomore at CJ and was very impressed.

MBuck37 (Apr 13, 2006 11:33:09 AM)
Good Afternoon Gary. My Question is Can Jamario Oneal be the next Donte Whitner at Safety? I think he has all the physical ability the world. Does he have Whitner's attention to detail meaning the film room. Thanks again..

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:33:09 AM)
Hi MBuck37... you just said it all. I actually think he can be better than Whittner because his God-given ability is even better than Whitner's. But J.O. is the kind to over run a play and fall for a sucker read because he wants to take your head off at all times. Whitner did too but he plays with much more control. That's due to the way that he's mentally approached the game. If J.O. can take just one thing from Donte, I would hope that would be it. I love J.O. in a major way. But he's not in Donte's class at this time. Talk to me about that in a year or two from now though. J.O. is a physical freak. So is Whitner but, in that regard, J.O. is Whitner-plus! Smile.

buckeyeinsaline (Apr 13, 2006 11:35:58 AM)
Gary, I noted that Ben Martin was big on the GoBlue Wolverine board this morning. Seems the Wolverines and Irish have made him a high priority. Can we get him to be a Buckeye?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:35:58 AM)
If Ohio State hasn't done the same with Martin then I don't know what to say about it buckeyeinsaline. I officially annointed him as my favorite after watching him live at the crosstown chili classic, game one of the season last year. I liked his sophomore film but seeing him operate in person really hooked me on him. I really like this kid and I have to believe OSU does as well. It's way too obvious.

boulderbuck (Apr 13, 2006 11:39:04 AM)
how many "little guys" do you see in this upcomming class? Apparantly Cdiddy is the new recruiting coordinator and wants at least six linemen

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:39:04 AM)
Hi boulder...I might try to get by with as few as I can this year maybe just two or three because next year's crop of lineman could be really solid. Besides I can only name about 3 or 4 instate who might be considered right now. I wonder who diddy has in mind. I'm sure Olgesby is one of them but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on him.

MBuck37 (Apr 13, 2006 11:45:46 AM)
If Troy Smith has a banner year which I think he will. Will he get a serious look by the NFL to play QB? I think he can. What's your opinion? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:45:46 AM)
This is where I differ with the common Buckeye fan. He may because Troy doesn't listen real well if you tell him that he can't. But I just don't see him having similar success at the next level. What was the most startling thig to me about Smith that everyone has just flossed over is that it took him four years at Ohio State to start studying game film properly. This is a touchy topic for me because I like TS a lot and he's already done great things at Ohio State ... and I hear it from the Glenville crew whenever I don't fall in line properly with the Tarblooder faction. I hope he does make it in the NFL as a QB but he has a lot of growing to do before he can get there...as a quarterback....not an athlete. But TS has beaten Michigan twice already and that's all that really matters right now. I think he and Teddy should both be Heisman mentions to start the season.

JimC (Apr 13, 2006 11:47:15 AM)
Will there be any recuits at the Sping Game?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:47:16 AM)
I'm sure there will be. I don't have any kind of list yet but it is track season and a lot of those guys will have meets next week I'm sure. I'm certain we will compile a comprehensive list next week at Bucknuts.

Guest (Apr 13, 2006 11:50:12 AM)
Sure TGII is electric and can take any play to the house, but crunch time end of the game and you need a clutch catch. Who do you go to TGII or Gonzo?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:50:12 AM)
Zooter asked about who do you go to in a clutch situation...I think Gonzo already had a very clutch against Michigan...both years as a matter of fact. But I'm sure that we will see a much more polished receiver in TGII this year so I'll take either of them. Just move the chains. Roy Hall has made a few clutch grabs in his time so far. And I love the TE down the field so I'll go with Frost or Nicol in that department. Just move the chains. I like Brian Hartline a lot too.

slim (Apr 13, 2006 11:53:51 AM)
gary does YSU's heacock ever get a shot at coaching at OSU as an assistant. would he trade the head spot for a place at OSU and would be he qualified?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:53:52 AM)
No slim I think Heacock will be at YSU until they kick him out of there or he leaves on his own terms. The 'Guins are loaded this year and armed with a new contract now, I think Heacock will be able to relax and guide this team back to the postseason, a place they haven't been to since JT left there. Would he ever become an assistant at OSU? He's already been a Big 10 assistant at Indiana so sure I think he could if the situation presented himself after Heacock was no longer at YSU. I'm hope things will go well in the Ice House this year and I'm looking forward to seeing Louis Irizarry play there...he's really having a good spring from what I've been told.

boozer (Apr 13, 2006 11:54:46 AM)
can you give us a prediction for the next commit?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:54:46 AM)
Evege! I hope he does it before OSU's camp. Other than him I don't have an answer right now.

MBuck37 (Apr 13, 2006 11:55:37 AM)
Once Troy and Justin leave who will be our QB in 2007? I think it will be Robbie Schoenhoft, slightly over Henton and Boeckman. Your thoughts..

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 11:55:38 AM)
I tend to say Schoenhoft. I like everything about him. He's a winner with a great demeanor on the field.

MBuck37 (Apr 13, 2006 12:00:51 PM)
My close friend still resides in Cleveland and he raves about two youg men. One being Nate Oliver. Just how talented is this youg man? Is he 6' 200lbs with great speed as my friend says. He also make the claim that Ray Small is faster than TGII, Is that at all possible? Has R.Small qualified for school? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:00:51 PM)
Mbuck...I'm really high on Nate Oliver...love the kid on and off the field. He will, he will...rock you! Plus he's going to prepare even harder this year because he was disappointed in himself when he had to go both ways at the end of last year and he was physically prepared for it. And I like Small a lot but there is only one TGII. No offense to Ray. I'm sure it might be a good race if you lined them up in a 40 but no one gets from point a to b, with a defender bearing down on him with the angle, than Teddy Ginn Jr. As far as him being qualified...well...he's still got some work to do.

the raven (Apr 13, 2006 12:02:20 PM)
gary you think chris wells will play at all?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:02:20 PM)
Hi raven...Is the Pope catholic.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:05:33 PM)
Before we run out of time...some of the things I'm hearing about camp so far are that guys like Laurinaitis, Curtis Terry and John Kerr are having great springs. Maurice Wells is really getting it. Making a big push for the number two spot ahead of Beans. And Haw is coming along fine also. John Skinner is also helping himself this spring.

boulderbuck (Apr 13, 2006 12:09:00 PM)
Is Marcel Frost in the JT doghouse? what else does he need to do to start this year?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:09:00 PM)
Boulder I keep hearing about how talented Marcel Frost is and how good he is in practice and it's time that he shows it on the field. There's no question he has a ton of ability and he was amazing on both sides of the ball in high school but the offense needs to let Frost make some plays this year. I'm just not used to the TE being a major part of the offense under JT but I hope Frost and Nicol can force the issue by making big plays down the field instead of at the line of scrimmage.

mahhattanbuck (Apr 13, 2006 12:13:00 PM)
Hey gary, watching Texas utilize its tight end to help them win a national championship as Miami and other programs begs me to ask if our problem is a recruting or a playbook one... In a year where troy will have to put up U.S.C. type offensive performances to stay ahead of young corners being potentially burned repeatedly for tds, can a more utilized te help here? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:13:00 PM)
You bet manhattanbuck...see above answer. I'm a big proponent of using the TE down the field to open up the offense but everything comes in stages with this offense and maybe this is the year they get to the TE for something other than a blocker at the point of attack and an occasional bone toss every now and then. Frost and Nicol can both be big time playmakers, let Brandon Smith do the dirty work at the line of scrimmage. But until I see a seam pass with the TE about 20 yards down the middle of the field, on a consistent basis, then I'll just don't believe it will continue to never happen.

NCBUCK (Apr 13, 2006 12:18:30 PM)
Did Tressel at YSU ever win a NC with a great offense, and an average to above average defense and special team?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:18:30 PM)
Great is the operative word here. If great means smashmouth, pound the football down the field than yes. No offense, I don't mean this as a criticism, prolific offense was an oxymoron at YSU under JT. Mark Brungard threw for 2,453 yards in '94 in 15 games and that was their best overall offense. Demond Tidwell threw for 1,961 in 1997, Ray Isaac never threw for more than 1,500 yards. Sorry guys nothing prolific there. All stats from YSU record book.

qbatheart (Apr 13, 2006 12:20:10 PM)
How do they get the next QB ,whoever it is, game time with Zwick in the picture?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:20:10 PM)
Zwick is the next QB qbatheart. Can you say Scott McMullen? Did JT ever play anyone other than those two? Maybe in extreme mop up time this year, cause there should be a lot of that, will you see Schoenhoft or Boeckman in the game. Don't hold your breath waiting on them though.

slim (Apr 13, 2006 12:22:27 PM)
gary how did your relationship with TGsr and glenville begin.....before you came to BN?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:22:27 PM)
It's a long story slim but I have to credit TG Sr. himself for letting evolve into what it is today. I respect every coach and give them their due. Some let you in more while others think they're more important than the game. Ginn is one of the best guys I've had the privilege of meeting. The kind you'd like to sit and have a beer with except he doesn't drink or smoke. He is real and very accessible.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:25:29 PM)
To make a long story short...I first met him at the N/S game in 2001 when he was an assistant at the game. We met again in the restroom at a random rest stop on the way home from the Big 33 game that year in Hershey and he was promoting his kids while we were using the urinals at 3 in the morning. Troy Smith was his main guy but he was telling me about two younger guys, Dareus Hiley and Donte Whitner, that were going to be stars. He invited me to the school right then and has continually welcomed me. He's a great promoter of kids. He's the real deal.

JimC (Apr 13, 2006 12:29:11 PM)
How long will we keep these new jerseys? Will OSU/Nike cave in and add the Gray back?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:29:11 PM)
Jim I think they'll tweak the look like I'm sure they did with the gray pants from last year. I don't think they went over too well last year. We might all just like them when we see them. I for one will miss the gray in the white game jerseys. I thought it was a perfect accent to the away uniforms. Like everything else we have to trust JT with tradition. I'm sure he will uphold the look to a satisfactory condition even though Nike wants to sell some new Ted Ginn jerseys and Troy Smith jerseys.

MBuck37 (Apr 13, 2006 12:31:21 PM)
I know this is pre-mature but if we succeed with a great year as a Team and he has a strong year will TGII be back in 2007?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:31:21 PM)
No! I have a better chance of being on the roster after next year. Smile!

manhattanbuck (Apr 13, 2006 12:35:05 PM)
There is no question we have talent and speed at lb and db. D'andrea, Mitchell, Kerr, Grant, Jenkins, have game experience and Laurenitas, Freeman, O'neal minor... My question is how many teams do you know have won a nc with a defence similiar in experience to OSU in 2006. Do you think our coaching staff has the time to stop experienced qbs like Iowa and Michigan have to enable the bucks to go to arizona?

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:35:05 PM)
I like our schedule early despite playing at Texas. I think it gives the D a chance to find itself before Penn State comes to town on Sept 23. They will also have a new QB also under center, or a relatively new one. Let's let these athletes do their thing on defense and we will find out sooner rather than later if they can hold their own. Tressel ball might have to be the main course to keep the young defense off the field in the early going.

wwt (Apr 13, 2006 12:36:11 PM)
GH, I saw a quote from JT saying the gray WILL be in the away jersey, taking the place of the white stripe on the home jersey.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:36:11 PM)
That's a good thing wwt...thanks for the 411! I'm looking forward to seeing both jerseys.

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:38:04 PM)
With that I'm going to call it a wrap. I want to thank everyone for participating in the chat. It's such a privilege to be able to talk directly with Buckeye fans in this forum and I'm grateful to have the opportunity. I also want to thank anyone who took the time to read the chat at a later time. Hope it was worth your time. Have a great Easter weekend and see you all at the 'Shoe next week. Go Bucks!

GaryHousteau (Apr 13, 2006 12:38:36 PM)

Good for him kleintime! I'm sure he's pursuing a dream!

(Apr 13, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
Gary , I know its early but who are your top 2 players in Ohio for the 2008 recruiting season?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:12:03 AM)
Hi woody...Martin and Oliver for 2007. For 2008 I'll give you five Shawntel Rowell, John Adams, Brandon Beachum, Michael Zordich and Darius Ashley. If I have to name two I'd go with Rowell and Beachum.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:13:51 AM)
Another great question. Again I can only with go with guys I've seen in person to this point. Adams is a terrific DB/Punt return guy from Buchtel. There are many more like Kordell Scott from Glenville. Glenville has about four or five guys that are ridiculous. I'm sure I'm missing some other really good ones but those five came to mind almost instantly.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:16:49 AM)
Hi Gary, Do you think one of the DE (Barrow) will move down to DT?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:16:50 AM)
I've only seen Barrow play in the two all-star games in his high school career and he impressed me in both games with his moves and instincts on the defensive line. I was a middle guard in college and I appreciate playmaking skills on the defensive line like David Patterson possesses and I thought Barrow did as well. He's yet to translate those skills to his college career but I think he can play inside. I think Denlinger and Larimore might become fixtures inside in the future though. But for the record I like Barrow and I still have high expecatations for him as a Buckeye.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:22:17 AM)
Gary, What is latest on Offensive Linemen that OSU is after for 2007 class? Can we secure out of state big names?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:22:17 AM)

(Apr 13, 2006 11:23:29 AM)
I just answered a question for Buckeyeinsaline about offensive linemen and it hasn't shown up yet on my screen.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:24:01 AM)
It looks like there's either a delay or I'm not getting the answers to populate.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:28:48 AM)
gary, besides b. saine who would you take this year at tailback and why......

(Apr 13, 2006 11:28:48 AM)

(Apr 13, 2006 11:33:09 AM)
Good Afternoon Gary. My Question is Can Jamario Oneal be the next Donte Whitner at Safety? I think he has all the physical ability the world. Does he have Whitner's attention to detail meaning the film room. Thanks again..

(Apr 13, 2006 11:33:09 AM)
Smile.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:35:58 AM)
Gary, I noted that Ben Martin was big on the GoBlue Wolverine board this morning. Seems the Wolverines and Irish have made him a high priority. Can we get him to be a Buckeye?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:35:58 AM)
If Ohio State hasn't done the same with Martin then I don't know what to say about it buckeyeinsaline. I officially annointed him as my favorite after watching him live at the crosstown chili classic, game one of the season last year. I liked his sophomore film but seeing him operate in person really hooked me on him. I really like this kid and I have to believe OSU does as well. It's way too obvious.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:39:04 AM)
how many \"little guys\" do you see in this upcomming class? Apparantly Cdiddy is the new recruiting coordinator and wants at least six linemen

(Apr 13, 2006 11:39:04 AM)
Hi boulder...I might try to get by with as few as I can this year maybe just two or three because next year's crop of lineman could be really solid. Besides I can only name about 3 or 4 instate who might be considered right now. I wonder who diddy has in mind. I'm sure Olgesby is one of them but I wouldn't hold your breath waiting on him.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:45:46 AM)
If Troy Smith has a banner year which I think he will. Will he get a serious look by the NFL to play QB? I think he can. What's your opinion? Thanks

(Apr 13, 2006 11:45:46 AM)

(Apr 13, 2006 11:47:15 AM)
Will there be any recuits at the Sping Game?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:47:16 AM)
I'm sure there will be. I don't have any kind of list yet but it is track season and a lot of those guys will have meets next week I'm sure. I'm certain we will compile a comprehensive list next week at Bucknuts.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:50:12 AM)
Sure TGII is electric and can take any play to the house, but crunch time end of the game and you need a clutch catch. Who do you go to TGII or Gonzo?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:50:12 AM)
Zooter asked about who do you go to in a clutch situation...I think Gonzo already had a very clutch against Michigan...both years as a matter of fact. But I'm sure that we will see a much more polished receiver in TGII this year so I'll take either of them. Just move the chains. Roy Hall has made a few clutch grabs in his time so far. And I love the TE down the field so I'll go with Frost or Nicol in that department. Just move the chains. I like Brian Hartline a lot too.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:53:51 AM)
gary does YSU's heacock ever get a shot at coaching at OSU as an assistant. would he trade the head spot for a place at OSU and would be he qualified?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:53:52 AM)

(Apr 13, 2006 11:54:46 AM)
can you give us a prediction for the next commit?

(Apr 13, 2006 11:54:46 AM)
Evege! I hope he does it before OSU's camp. Other than him I don't have an answer right now.

(Apr 13, 2006 11:55:37 AM)
Once Troy and Justin leave who will be our QB in 2007? I think it will be Robbie Schoenhoft, slightly over Henton and Boeckman. Your thoughts..

(Apr 13, 2006 11:55:38 AM)
I tend to say Schoenhoft. I like everything about him. He's a winner with a great demeanor on the field.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:00:51 PM)
My close friend still resides in Cleveland and he raves about two youg men. One being Nate Oliver. Just how talented is this youg man? Is he 6' 200lbs with great speed as my friend says. He also make the claim that Ray Small is faster than TGII, Is that at all possible? Has R.Small qualified for school? Thanks.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:00:51 PM)
Mbuck...I'm really high on Nate Oliver...love the kid on and off the field. He will, he will...rock you! Plus he's going to prepare even harder this year because he was disappointed in himself when he had to go both ways at the end of last year and he was physically prepared for it. And I like Small a lot but there is only one TGII. No offense to Ray. I'm sure it might be a good race if you lined them up in a 40 but no one gets from point a to b, with a defender bearing down on him with the angle, than Teddy Ginn Jr. As far as him being qualified...well...he's still got some work to do.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:02:20 PM)
gary you think chris wells will play at all?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:02:20 PM)
Hi raven...Is the Pope catholic.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:05:33 PM)
Before we run out of time...some of the things I'm hearing about camp so far are that guys like Laurinaitis, Curtis Terry and John Kerr are having great springs. Maurice Wells is really getting it. Making a big push for the number two spot ahead of Beans. And Haw is coming along fine also. John Skinner is also helping himself this spring.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:09:00 PM)
Is Marcel Frost in the JT doghouse? what else does he need to do to start this year?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:09:00 PM)
Boulder I keep hearing about how talented Marcel Frost is and how good he is in practice and it's time that he shows it on the field. There's no question he has a ton of ability and he was amazing on both sides of the ball in high school but the offense needs to let Frost make some plays this year. I'm just not used to the TE being a major part of the offense under JT but I hope Frost and Nicol can force the issue by making big plays down the field instead of at the line of scrimmage.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:13:00 PM)
Hey gary, watching Texas utilize its tight end to help them win a national championship as Miami and other programs begs me to ask if our problem is a recruting or a playbook one... In a year where troy will have to put up U.S.C. type offensive performances to stay ahead of young corners being potentially burned repeatedly for tds, can a more utilized te help here? Thanks

(Apr 13, 2006 12:13:00 PM)
You bet manhattanbuck...see above answer. I'm a big proponent of using the TE down the field to open up the offense but everything comes in stages with this offense and maybe this is the year they get to the TE for something other than a blocker at the point of attack and an occasional bone toss every now and then. Frost and Nicol can both be big time playmakers, let Brandon Smith do the dirty work at the line of scrimmage. But until I see a seam pass with the TE about 20 yards down the middle of the field, on a consistent basis, then I'll just don't believe it will continue to never happen.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:18:30 PM)
Did Tressel at YSU ever win a NC with a great offense, and an average to above average defense and special team?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:18:30 PM)
Great is the operative word here. If great means smashmouth, pound the football down the field than yes. No offense, I don't mean this as a criticism, prolific offense was an oxymoron at YSU under JT. Mark Brungard threw for 2,453 yards in '94 in 15 games and that was their best overall offense. Demond Tidwell threw for 1,961 in 1997, Ray Isaac never threw for more than 1,500 yards. Sorry guys nothing prolific there. All stats from YSU record book.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:20:10 PM)
How do they get the next QB ,whoever it is, game time with Zwick in the picture?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:20:10 PM)
Zwick is the next QB qbatheart. Can you say Scott McMullen? Did JT ever play anyone other than those two? Maybe in extreme mop up time this year, cause there should be a lot of that, will you see Schoenhoft or Boeckman in the game. Don't hold your breath waiting on them though.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:22:27 PM)
gary how did your relationship with TGsr and glenville begin.....before you came to BN?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:22:27 PM)
It's a long story slim but I have to credit TG Sr. himself for letting evolve into what it is today. I respect every coach and give them their due. Some let you in more while others think they're more important than the game. Ginn is one of the best guys I've had the privilege of meeting. The kind you'd like to sit and have a beer with except he doesn't drink or smoke. He is real and very accessible.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:25:29 PM)
To make a long story short...I first met him at the N/S game in 2001 when he was an assistant at the game. We met again in the restroom at a random rest stop on the way home from the Big 33 game that year in Hershey and he was promoting his kids while we were using the urinals at 3 in the morning. Troy Smith was his main guy but he was telling me about two younger guys, Dareus Hiley and Donte Whitner, that were going to be stars. He invited me to the school right then and has continually welcomed me. He's a great promoter of kids. He's the real deal.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:29:11 PM)
How long will we keep these new jerseys? Will OSU/Nike cave in and add the Gray back?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:29:11 PM)
Jim I think they'll tweak the look like I'm sure they did with the gray pants from last year. I don't think they went over too well last year. We might all just like them when we see them. I for one will miss the gray in the white game jerseys. I thought it was a perfect accent to the away uniforms. Like everything else we have to trust JT with tradition. I'm sure he will uphold the look to a satisfactory condition even though Nike wants to sell some new Ted Ginn jerseys and Troy Smith jerseys.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:31:21 PM)
I know this is pre-mature but if we succeed with a great year as a Team and he has a strong year will TGII be back in 2007?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:31:21 PM)
No! I have a better chance of being on the roster after next year. Smile!

(Apr 13, 2006 12:35:05 PM)
There is no question we have talent and speed at lb and db. D'andrea, Mitchell, Kerr, Grant, Jenkins, have game experience and Laurenitas, Freeman, O'neal minor... My question is how many teams do you know have won a nc with a defence similiar in experience to OSU in 2006. Do you think our coaching staff has the time to stop experienced qbs like Iowa and Michigan have to enable the bucks to go to arizona?

(Apr 13, 2006 12:35:05 PM)
I like our schedule early despite playing at Texas. I think it gives the D a chance to find itself before Penn State comes to town on Sept 23. They will also have a new QB also under center, or a relatively new one. Let's let these athletes do their thing on defense and we will find out sooner rather than later if they can hold their own. Tressel ball might have to be the main course to keep the young defense off the field in the early going.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:36:11 PM)
GH, I saw a quote from JT saying the gray WILL be in the away jersey, taking the place of the white stripe on the home jersey.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:36:11 PM)
That's a good thing wwt...thanks for the 411! I'm looking forward to seeing both jerseys.

(Apr 13, 2006 12:38:04 PM)
With that I'm going to call it a wrap. I want to thank everyone for participating in the chat. It's such a privilege to be able to talk directly with Buckeye fans in this forum and I'm grateful to have the opportunity. I also want to thank anyone who took the time to read the chat at a later time. Hope it was worth your time. Have a great Easter weekend and see you all at the 'Shoe next week. Go Bucks!

(Apr 13, 2006 12:38:36 PM)
thanks gary for the info, have a great weekend

(Apr 13, 2006 12:38:36 PM)
Thanks for participating slim! You have a great one as well.
