NevadaBuck Chat Archive: April 21

NevadaBuck stopped by Friday afternoon to chat with Bucknuts premium subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

hamiltuckbuck (Apr 21, 2006 9:53:41 AM)
Nevada, for those who can't make the spring game, and autograph session, is there another venue to donate to the Gentry family, to help with the everday expense of staying in Columbus?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 9:54:43 AM)
Let me check on the best way to help with the Gentry's.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 9:54:53 AM)
Being here in Cols., I have not heard of anything like that yet. I assume if and when help is needed, it will be publicized.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 9:54:59 AM)
What's going on with Chad Hoobler? What does he have to do to see the starting lineup this fall?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 9:56:03 AM)
Hoobler is buried on the depth chart again. I think unless he makes a move soon, that he may get left behind. He needs to play "in control" more, and be responsible.

JimC (Apr 21, 2006 9:56:09 AM)
Hi Nevada, Does D. Johnson get a 'ship offer this weekend? Will he committ?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 9:57:39 AM)
I think the less I say on the DJ situation the better right now. I will state that I have consistently believed this situation would have a happy ending. I am more sure of that than ever right now. Lets leave it at that.

mp23 (Apr 21, 2006 9:57:47 AM)
I heard D Lyons is moving back to WR. Any insight you can give us on that?

LV-Buckeye (Apr 21, 2006 9:59:41 AM)
hello all

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 9:59:46 AM)

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 9:59:51 AM)
The emergence of Anderson Russell at safety has been one of the surprises of the spring. Lyons is more suited for the offensive side of the ball, in my opinion, anyway--but Anderson's move has made the defensive backfield kind of crowded.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 9:59:59 AM)
As a reminder, this is a moderated Chat ...

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:00:23 AM)
All messages come to me and I post them, then post NB's answers and we move to the next question in the queue. Here we go ...

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:00:28 AM)
Do you know which recruits will be taking in the Spring Game?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:01:18 AM)
ed..there will be a bunch, but you never know until they show up....I know there have been a bunch of invites extended.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:01:32 AM)
Toney Clemons and a couple guys from Gant's school in Michigan.

kleintime16 (Apr 21, 2006 10:01:53 AM)
Hey Nevada, What do you know about Ray Smalls situation? Will he qualify?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:02:51 AM)
I think Ray will make it. I do not believe(at this time) that there will be anymore academic casualties among the recruits.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:03:09 AM)
I heard he may have gotten a chance to take a test untimed and that should help.

gobucks (Apr 21, 2006 10:03:14 AM)
I know this is more of a football chat room, but is there any news on Lance Thomas?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:04:06 AM)
I think that we got in too late on Thomas to turn the tide. Chances would be pretty slim. Hunter should make it, however, and he is the banger that you need.

joey aiuppa (Apr 21, 2006 10:04:11 AM)
what is your opinion of dewey elliot of fairfield?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:04:58 AM)
I think Dewey will be a Buckeye(assuming that his academics are in order)....this kid is a player....

LV-Buckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:05:02 AM)
I think i remember the bucks being tipped off on anderson russell by one of jim tressels old friends or somthing like that. does that guy have anymore diamonds in the rough?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:06:12 AM)
just goes to show you that "offer lists" and "star ratings" are not the ENTIRE ballgame....Anderson came from an old confidant of JT(when this guy speaks, JT listens)--he clearly was right again....

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:06:18 AM)
Are you blown away with Chris Wells?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:07:30 AM)
yes I am......but the best thing is that we don't need him to be GREAT this year---Maurice Wells and Haw have been TERRIFIC this not write those guys off(or do so at your own peril!)

rbuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:07:36 AM)
Do you still feel confident in Clifford becoming a Buckeye? I spoke to someone in Colerain yesterday that seems to think he'll go to Michigan.

kleintime16 (Apr 21, 2006 10:07:42 AM)
Nevada, still feel confident that Clifford will end up in scarlet and gray? That would be quite a satey duo, Clifford and Oliver

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:08:36 AM)

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:08:41 AM)
If Boone misses any time, what do you think the starting o-line would be in his absence?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:09:57 AM)
I think you'd have to move some guys around....but some combination of Datish, Downing, Barton, Rehring and probably Shaffer

mp23 (Apr 21, 2006 10:10:12 AM)
There was a lot of talk that Albert Dukes was going to be a great one. I have heard good things about him but no one seems to be raving about him. Has he been a disapointment or are the other guys like Hartline and Amos that good?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:12:02 AM)
Hartline and Robiskie are real real real good players...then you have Ginn, Gonzo, Hall in front of him as well....I just think we have an embarrsment of riches right now. Having said that a lot of those guys will be gone next year--Albert will contribute before he is gone--I really like this kid a lot.

JimC (Apr 21, 2006 10:12:09 AM)
Did Petrey help his cause with that looonnnnnnggg field goal?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:13:38 AM)
We have two kickers that can kick it deep and accurately. How will they fare when there is pressure is the big question...but we have two good ones. Aaron put one at least ten yarsds out of the back of the endzone on a kickoff as well. We are in good shape here.

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:13:42 AM)
As of today, who would be ranked in your preseason Top Five going into the fall?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:15:04 AM)
That is so tough to say right now....probably OSU, ND, West Virginia, Cal(who is going to beat USC this year), and Georgia

westonbuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:15:14 AM)
I heard of a couple of players that might be out of the team by the time fall comes around...any idea who they are?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:16:40 AM)
that is so hard to speculate on(for a number of reasons)..but I would watch Lane.....

murphdawg (Apr 21, 2006 10:16:55 AM)
nevada, are you close with the men's b-ball staff as well?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:17:28 AM)

gobucks (Apr 21, 2006 10:17:42 AM)
when will the players ratings and rankings be available?

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:17:51 AM)
Bob L told me later this month or early May

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:18:10 AM)
what Steve said...

joey aiuppa (Apr 21, 2006 10:18:14 AM)
nevada - which buckeyes do you think will go in the 1st round of the NFL draft ?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:19:28 AM)
Hawk, Holmes, Carpenter and Mangold.....I think Ashton and Donte both slip down....

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:19:46 AM)
Great teams have intagibles that separate them from the pack. How do you view the leadership, work ethic and commitment of this Buckeye team?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:21:34 AM)
I think this team goes as far as Troy Smith takes them. If he is the leader we all know that he can be and avoids the "injury bug" or any "off field" distractions than I think we are as good or better than anyone in the country. The lack of a team leader on the defensive side of the ball is a little scary.

gobucks (Apr 21, 2006 10:21:45 AM)
who do you think the next player to committ will be and when?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:22:36 AM)
Im still counting on Evege.....(but does DJ count???)

JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:22:44 AM)
Do you think Jamario is going to have the breakout year that I hope he does, or do you think he end up more along the lines of a Prescott Burgess?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:24:01 AM)
Jamario is having a GREAT spring. Watch out for him this year. No comparison between him and "Pancaked" Burgess....

miamibuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:24:08 AM)
I don't know if Barksdale has been spoken of yet, but he seems to be generating an awful lot of interest. He must be a big time prospect, how good are the Bucks chances of getting him, he sure would help fill a big need

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:25:02 AM)
we have a shot at Barksdale.....but so do a number of other teams....but we are certainly in the pole position.

rbuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:25:09 AM)
Will Boone miss time?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:25:56 AM)
not as much as some people are speculating. Enrolling in that class was key.

kleintime16 (Apr 21, 2006 10:26:04 AM)
Out of these big namers - Martin, Ogelsby, Barksdale, Clemons, and O'Dowd - Which, if any, have a good chance to become a buckeye?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:27:03 AM)
We have a GREAT shot at ODowd..a real good shot at Martin and Barksdale, and a good shot at Ogelsby and Clemons..

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:27:09 AM)
What are our S&G spies reporting about _ichigan's spring?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:28:28 AM)
got a wonderful report from my guy up there just this morning(and he is a Michigan homer)......they did not have a breakout effort up there......I feel like they are circling the drain right now....

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:28:45 AM)
Every year under JT, it seems we see a surprise performance from a senior. We don't have many seniors this year, but do you see anyone breaking through?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:29:33 AM)
watch Richardson to have a big year....he is my "breakout senior to watch"....

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:29:39 AM)
Good pick, I'd say!

LV-Buckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:29:47 AM)
Would it be alright with the b-ball staff to be on the olympic team if he was still here

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:30:42 AM)
I assume you are speaking of Oden?? In that case the answer is an emphatic yes!

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:31:03 AM)
No brainer on that, great experience for GO, that's 2 years from now.

Guest (Apr 21, 2006 10:31:07 AM)
We talk about the player a lot but do you see any of the coaches moving on. It seems like we have some very good young coaches that would be targets.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:31:33 AM)
mp23 asks about the football coaching staff and any prospects to leave this year or next.

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:32:14 AM)
have to keep an eye on Hazell....he would be the most likely candidate to move on....

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:32:26 AM)
Agreed, Couple here on DJ ...

JohnnyBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:32:31 AM)
Should we expect a commitment from D. Johnson after the weekend?

gobucks (Apr 21, 2006 10:32:33 AM)
What is the word on Derrell Johnson? Does it look good he will be a Buckeye?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:33:11 AM)
looks very good indeed for this to have the outcome that we are all rooting for......

murfinatl (Apr 21, 2006 10:33:18 AM)
Is Tyler Whaley that much improved that the seniors on both teams wanted him first, or is Jim Cordle not as good as we thought last year before his injury? (Or are the seniors just loyal to a guy who has been around a while?)

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:35:18 AM)
Tyler Whaley is just a real good interior lineman. You have to see this guy--he is 5'8(or so --although listed at 6'0) and 270 lbs of muscle. Real tough to get under a guy this size. And he is tenacious and smart. A "diamond in the rough" for sure. The strongest guy on the team.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:35:22 AM)

kleintime16 (Apr 21, 2006 10:35:27 AM)
What is the word on Evege? is he a silent commit at this point?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:35:52 AM)
not a silent commit. But "odds on" to go at any time.

hamiltuckbuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:36:01 AM)
Who do you see stepping up to take a leadership role on the defense, if anyone?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:37:46 AM)
The problem is that Pitcock is just not an outgoing guy. So he will not be a "vocal leader"(although he will lead by example). I am looking to a Brandon Mitchell(even though Patterson has passed him on the depth chart) or a David Patterson to step up. Freeman is another guy who could fill the bill(as he is a special player)...

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:38:02 AM)
We've been waiting for one of the Mitchum, Skinner, Person group to emerge. Any signs of it happening yet?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:39:35 AM)
they are all playing much better football this spring. Remember, at this point many had written off Datish to the scrapyard. They will all see the field and contribute. With Kerr and Whaley coming on, we have a nice deep stable of young linemen.

westonbuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 10:39:43 AM)
Gives us a scoop about the football team....thats what we want..something you cant get only at bucknuts

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:39:56 AM)
Uh oh, you've laid down the gauntlet (ha ha).

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:43:04 AM) guys are constantly bombarded with "Bucknuts only " scoop(this is far and away the best site for info--much to the staff's annoyance sometimes--I might add!!) I would just keep an eye on the DJ situation closely and I would also keep an eye on Shaun Lane.......

joey aiuppa (Apr 21, 2006 10:43:16 AM)
is d jordan medically done for now?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:43:37 AM)
I believe that is the fact.....

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:43:56 AM)
He's still on the roster, they just want to exhaust all possibilities, seems unlikely to return, tho.

crazybuckfan40 (Apr 21, 2006 10:44:04 AM)
Compared to other schools who much effort does the staff put into recruiting. This is not a knock on our staff I am just wondering if other staff take more time than us or do we recruit harder than other schools??

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:45:37 AM)
we just recruit "differently"..JT is looking for 20(or so) guys that are GREAT players, but that are also GREAT people and that really really really want to be Buckeyes. That is a fundamentally different approach than some other schools. It requires patience and a lot of discipline on the part of staff. But it works.

joey aiuppa (Apr 21, 2006 10:45:45 AM)
what can you tell us about Josh Kerr......

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:48:05 AM)
the defensive linemen that I've talked to say that this kid is a player. Any specualtion that this is some sort of "make good" offer for John's situation is ridiculous...NO ONE gets legacy offers, favors, pipeline or package deals to come to tOSU. Schollies are just to prescious. Staff likes him a lot. And he WAS headed to Miami(I confirmed that with Miami staff memebers)--he just got tripped up academically.

murphdawg (Apr 21, 2006 10:48:19 AM)
Does Tony Gonzalez leave early if he has a great year this year?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:48:33 AM)
no way....

JimC (Apr 21, 2006 10:48:38 AM)
What does the staff and the "powers that be" think of all the negative feedback on the new jerseys?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:50:27 AM)
they think its amusing.....I think they were caught off-guard by the uproar. No one in the world is more knowlegeable and sensitive to the great tradition of tOSU than JT. But change has been a part of the uniforms for the last 50 years(not too long ago we played with red helmets!)...change is inevitable, and part of life

d (Apr 21, 2006 10:50:40 AM)
Any history of injury with Pitman? Do you think this lingers throught the season or just the 1300 yrd aches and pains as JT says?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:51:38 AM)
Tony would be playing on Saturday if this was a real game. Caution is smart, especially when you have a stable of studs behind him. Pittman will be 110% in the fall.

buckdiego (Apr 21, 2006 10:51:44 AM)
Nevada! What is the staff planning on doing with Torrence? Are they going to take a wait and see approach with the baseball thing or will they offer sooner rather than later and let the chips fall where they may? Talk to you soon!

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:52:47 AM)
once his academics are in order he gets the offer(as does Morgan Williams and others)...I still think Devon ends up a baseball player.

expresblfc (Apr 21, 2006 10:52:56 AM)
Do we see any easing up on admissions this coming year?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:53:42 AM)
no easing...but an increased cooperation and communication...which is always a good thing

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:53:54 AM)
Seeing Larry Grant's position on the depth chart makes me wonder if it's just taking some time to pick up the scheme, or is he lacking some of the skills maybe that we all hoped he had?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:54:59 AM)
Grant is coming along fine. Would like to see him stick his nose in the hole a little better, but he has all the physical tools to play the game at a high level. It just takes a bit of time to adapt to the speed of the game.

murfinatl (Apr 21, 2006 10:55:10 AM)
outside of Westerville (which seems to turn out a few big names from time to time) why aren't there more OSU recruits from Central Ohio? Is the quality of football just not that good?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:57:03 AM)
that is a complex issue.....i do think the funding at a number of central ohio districts is just abysmal...but players continue to come out of central Ohio, and there are a bunch of good looking players from there this year....

jmob (Apr 21, 2006 10:57:09 AM)
How is the offensive line going to shape up this year as compared to last year?

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:57:20 AM)
Just a few more and we will wrap it up.

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:58:22 AM)
better...more will be real strength of the team...

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 10:58:31 AM)
Since you've pinned the Buckeyes hopes this year on Troy Smith, are you expecting him to have an outstanding season?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 10:59:13 AM)
I think that Troy wins the Heisman this year. So, yes, I think he is poised for a HUGE year.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 10:59:16 AM)

boredatwork (Apr 21, 2006 10:59:29 AM)
Nevada, any feedback about how good Beanie is with his blocking assignments? Seems like picking up the pass protection assignments will determine the playing time

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:00:29 AM)
that is the toughest thing for Wells right now. But he is coming along fine....this is a smart, fun young man to be around. And he really wants to learn and quickly.

crazybuckfan40 (Apr 21, 2006 11:00:35 AM)
Will Toney Clemons receive an offer this weekend. I think he is the top receiver that I have seen on film. He reminds me a lot of Braylon.

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:01:34 AM)
Could happen--I do not know the status of him acadmically., however, and that is always a stumbling block. Good player for sure.

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 11:01:45 AM)
Does the staff have a target number for o-line and d-tackle signees for the next class?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:02:42 AM)
It would not surprise me if it was three and three...or four and four.... I know they are not as concerned about the depth as some of you are.

joey aiuppa (Apr 21, 2006 11:02:50 AM)
any word if the TE's will be used more this year that we look to have two good one's in frost, nicol and smith? i assume he stays at TE?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:04:10 AM)
Nicol's comeback really gives you some nice options(he just has to catch the ball when thrown to). Frost is a stud, and I think you will be shocked by how much we go to the TE this year.

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 11:04:12 AM)
Do you see Larimore being the next Anderson/Pitcock?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:05:21 AM)
I LOVED Dexter when we signed him(as you all remember..LOL) gotta love a guy who is also the Heavyweight champion wrestler for the US....this is one tough kid...

westonbuckeye (Apr 21, 2006 11:05:31 AM)
I remember last year when some of the staff here thought Russel might be a bust....I am glad he will prove them wrong...anyway..whats the story with Welch?

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:06:44 AM)
Welch struggles with the ball in the air. He tackles real well, but he get lost sometimes in coverage schemes--and that just cant happen. Key special teams guy, however.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 11:07:26 AM)
Last couple coming ...

crazybuckfan40 (Apr 21, 2006 11:07:28 AM)
How does the staff feel about Abdallah and Garnier in their progression through the spring. I thought Abdallah played well in the jersey scrimmage.

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:08:24 AM)
Nader is coming along--albeit slowly. Garnier is a longer term project.

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 11:08:33 AM)
Last one (I promise) ...

edbuck51 (Apr 21, 2006 11:08:37 AM)
Do you think the national media underappreciates Coach Tressel? Seems like Boob Stoops, Weiss, Urban Meyer, Coach Carroll, etc. are the Coaches du jour. Do the media not promote Tressel because they get limited access to the team, and JT is pretty vanilla in interviews? When are they going to realize what a great program this guy is running. Or do they already realize it and just won't publicize it because they have to do things on JT's terms rather than on theirs.

nevadabuck (Apr 21, 2006 11:11:02 AM)
The National Media has a hard time with JT because they think he is "too good to be true"--and when ANY problem arises at OSU they love to take shots at the "seemingly nice guy in the sweater vest" long as we are a contender for the NC we will wear this bullseye---it is just the nature of the beast.......but I will let you all in on one more secret---JT IS as nice as he comes across--he is the real deal and we are blessed to have him! Go Bucks!!

SteveHelwagen (Apr 21, 2006 11:11:46 AM)
