There's a new discussion that we aren't taking Michigan seriously enough. No question they have and have always had talent. Now they've made some significant coaching changes. Is it enough for them to show marked improvement? Is Carr the problem?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:01:41 PM)
Hi marksgforce...quite frankly it's time to bury Michigan when they're down. Colin Cowherd ripped them to shred on the radio this week. JT will continue to dominate LC and I hope they keep him around forever. Ohio State will never take another major dip in this rivalry with JT at the helm.
USFbuckeyeBG (May 4, 2006 6:03:30 PM)
Should we take offense to dionte allen's comments in his interview after he left the spring game??
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:03:30 PM)
Hi USFbuckeye...I really don't think so. I was standing right by him when he was talking with JT at the spring game and he seemed to be genuine to me. His cousin Aaron Gant, already a Buckeye, told me OSU has a shot at Allen quite some time ago and I tend to agree. Will it happen? If he's smart it will. Smile.
Heater (May 4, 2006 6:06:21 PM)
Gary--Thanks for the chat! Obvious question #1 tonight (there will be more): How about Ray Small? Bad? Bad, bad?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:06:21 PM)
Hi heater...sounds like a baseball term... How about Ray Small...that's the $64,000 question. I spoke to Ray on Tuesday at Glenville and he was still waiting to hear word on his test score. I didn't hear anything that night from Coach Ginn at the combine. I made a call to Glenville today and didn't get a return, not Ginn but an assistant, so I'm guessing, and I stress it's just a guess, that the results weren't favorable. I will find out for sure on Saturday right from Small himself. He still has the June test if he didn't get his grade.
Coop (May 4, 2006 6:07:22 PM)
Eugene Clifford, is he a buckeye in the end?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:07:22 PM)
I tend to think yes Coop! Just a guess at this point. I hope to learn more tomorrow.
USFbuckeyeBG (May 4, 2006 6:10:48 PM)
and whats with this rumor we will have 4 or 5 new commits in the next week??
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:10:48 PM)
I can't wait for the next proverbial shoe, er recruit, to drop. Let's hope Saine verbal will indeed begin a nice avalanche of commitments within the next week. I'm quite excited about who I might see tomorrow. I'm not privy to any names of the 4 or 5 to be rumored to commit but I'm anxious to find out who they might be. Saine is probably one of the four or five. I'd like to see Evege at least commit by the end of this weekend. After watching the NFL draft, why wouldn't any of these young Ohio prep stars want to become Buckeyes. Get on the train!
marksgforce (May 4, 2006 6:13:43 PM)
No question Notre Dame looked much better under Charlie Weiss than they did under Ty Willingham in each of the coaches first season in winning 10 games. The media love-fest, however, is identical -- return to glory, blah, blah. What happens if the Irish have a drop off this year? Does the media turn on Weiss? Do they lose their recruiting momentum?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:13:43 PM)
Marks there's no way there's a drop off with ND, they'll only stay the same or get even better if they can ever field a reliable defense. Brady Quinn alone guarantees the Irish will be solid and respectable next year. And then they have their limo driving savior coming on board the following year. I don't think very highly of this kid, from an off the field perspective, I have to admit. But I see no drop off with the Irish. And recruiting will be strong again this season. Just hope that Martin doesn't fall prey to the Irish.
Heater (May 4, 2006 6:16:09 PM)
Obvious question #2 tonight: What's the latest on the Ginn Academy?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:16:09 PM)
The Ginn Academy is moving full force ahead. I got to see the Blue prints of the building this past weekend and then once again on Tuesday. It will consist of one building that's going to be renovated, and they will build two more. The plans include an indoor football facility and an outdoor football field. It looks pretty ambitious I have to admit. They're looking for funding at this time no question.
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:17:09 PM)
I hope this is working tonight. For the last couple of weeks we've had trouble during my chats. I really apologize if it's a technical issue. Please keep sending the questions because there seems to be a delay going on.
james prato (May 4, 2006 6:19:01 PM)
good evening gary, the bucks are finally stacked with RB's for the future......!!! will you be at the osu nike camp getting the latest scoop
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:19:01 PM)
Hi james thanks for your question, you name sounds new to these chats. Yes of course I'll be at the Nike camp on Friday. I don't know how much access we will have to the combine, it's a Rivals endeavor, but Steve and I will be busting it to get good pictures and feedback from the players. It should be a great day at the WHAC on Friday.
james prato (May 4, 2006 6:21:01 PM)
also how is the glenville track team going. do they have a shot at another state title in some events.....
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:21:02 PM)
And yes James the Glenville track team will more than likely win their fourth consecutive state title, going away! Too many horses. I said that about them in football this past year and I got skewered for saying it. But I was right they had a lot of horses but just couldn't put it all together. The track team will not suffer a similar fate.
marksgforce (May 4, 2006 6:23:16 PM)
How is LI doing with the Penguins? Does he or his family have any ongoing contact with JT? Does he take them to the playoffs?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:23:16 PM)
Marks, I think the Penguins would have made it this year without LI because they're so loaded. Louis looks great I must say. He'll really help the Penguins this year. They have great running backs, a veteran quarterback, and a solid offensive line. Miles Williams is a good looking wideout for them as well. The people I know at YSU just raved about LI this spring. He still may have a future beyond the collegiate level. He has two years of eligibility at YSU still.
labuck (May 4, 2006 6:27:58 PM)
Hi Gary. Thank you for the chat, as always! Things have been crazy out here with all of the stuff involving USC. Don't you think that at any major program nowadays there is the opportunity to go over it with a fine tooth comb and put together a bunch of little things to make it appear that the program is out of control? Is it USC's turn like it was OSU's a couple years back when ESPN targeted us?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:27:58 PM)
No queston labuck, once the spotlight shines on any programs then all the cockroaches come out of the woodwork. That's the good thing out of the MC investigation with OSU. Jim Tressel runs a clean program for the most part. With all the intense investigation brought on by the Reecie situation, the NCAA basicallly found nothing. Jim Tressel is just too good to be true and he'll be the head man at OSU as long as he wants to. Let's just hope JT doesn't get ornery in his old age like that coach over in Happy Valley seemed to get in recent years.
Guest (May 4, 2006 6:29:42 PM)
do we have any new developments on Ben Martin??
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:29:42 PM)
USFbuckeye asked about Martin and I heard one piece of potential bad news regarding Martin's personal situation that could favor ND but I don't know how valid that might be at this point. I still believe from what I've been told that OSU still has a good shot at Martin but only time will tell. I see this one going into December at the earliest.

When will we give mr torrence his scholly???
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:30:37 PM)
USF asked about Torrence...and I have no first hand knowledge on this guy. Can't help you a lick here.
Center67 (May 4, 2006 6:33:02 PM)
Is there even a chance for Boeckman or Schoenhoft to back up Smith this season. You know that Tressel favors seniors, but he also needs to prepare for the future. From what I saw during the scrimmage, both of these quarterbacks performed just as good or better than Zwick.
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:33:02 PM)
Hi center ... no I really don't think you'll see Boeckman or Schoenhoft on the field before Zwick at this point. Not a chance in my opinion. Think back just two years ago when Zwick himself was presumably the man in waiting and he didn't get on the field before Scott McMullen. Seniority usually rules in JT's book. I just don't see either of the young guys getting on the field before Zwick.
Guest (May 4, 2006 6:36:31 PM)
and how about DJ?????
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:36:31 PM)
USF asked about DJ...I think he must have typed in 100 questions and then left the chat. Sorry you couldn't hang tonight USFbuckeyeBG. I've heard nothing new to date about DJ...it's still an admissions issue. I've heard some rumors to this point but I don't think they're constructive enough to go with at this time. I'm still hoping he has the patience to hold on but I really don't know if it's in the Cards at this time.
marksgforce (May 4, 2006 6:39:40 PM)
What 5 Bucks from the football team would you pick as your starters if you were coaching a summer basketball team?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:39:40 PM)
Good question marks...Lawrence Wilson number one. Vernon Gholston two. Troy Smith and Roy Hall and maybe Teddy. Teddy is reach but I'll take Teddy on my team in any sport. I think Robiskie could probably crack the lineup or maybe be my sixth man. I think I could win a few games with that lineup.
kleintime16 (May 4, 2006 6:41:15 PM)
Hey Gary, HUGE commit from Saine, when do you think the next jumps on board .... Evege, that is?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:41:15 PM)
Hi kleintime...Let's hope Evege stops all the nonsense and keeps the momentum going this weekend. I'm hoping it's Evege. And yes Klein...a huge commit from Saine. Can't wait to see him run this weekend.
labuck (May 4, 2006 6:44:11 PM)
I have not seen Kyle Hubbard play. I was wondering who he reminds you of at this stage? Is he similar to a Roy Hall where he is a tweener with WR and TE?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:44:11 PM)
labuck...Kyle Hubbard to me is as good as any wide receiver in the state this year. He's my number one wide receiver. And he looks great. I just saw him at the Browns combine. He'll be at the Nike Camp tomorrow. He's no tweener right now...he's a tall wide receiver with great body control. He just needs a little more speed and he's working on it with the speed/strength crew. It would be a shame to waste this kid's pass catching ability at TE. He can go get the ball with the best of them. Exceptional prospect if you ask me.
kleintime16 (May 4, 2006 6:45:51 PM)
What do you think abotu the Saine committment???? This seems to be pretty suprising giving our depth at RB
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:45:51 PM)
Just love it klein...redshirt him a year and there's two years of separation between him and Beanie. If you're a Buckeye fan, you have the luxury of knowing there will be a stud in the backfield for at least the next five years at a minimum.
Nexu (May 4, 2006 6:47:34 PM)
tressel running a clean program, lol you're a funny guy tonight
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:47:34 PM)
We're talking NCAA violations nexu...sorry I'm so amusing to you tonight. My bad. I'm sorry he can't control any freshman drinking binges or whatever it is you're referring to.
hammbone1928 (May 4, 2006 6:50:57 PM)
Gary with the state of being loaded ,one might say the besclass ever what do you think?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:50:57 PM)
Hammbone I'd like to agree with you but the O-line class to me at this point is really uninspiring. If you put last year's Oline with this class then it would be ridiculous. Just don't see the dominant O-line prospects in this class. I see a few reaches that I'm rooting for but nothing near last year's class. Other than that I'd also need to see a couple more LB prospects separate themselves from the pack. I want to see what this Dewey Elliot is all about for one.
labuck (May 4, 2006 6:52:41 PM)
I remember a couple of years back, I believe it was against Northwestern at "The Shoe", where JT got a least one series a piece for Zwick and T. Smith. Do you think that will happen again this year with Boeckman and Schoenhoft to get them both a little taste before their big battle the following season?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:52:41 PM)
Sure...Boeckman already threw a 42 yard TD pass to TGII last year. I think it will especially the case this year because I see OSU in a few blowout wins this year. Buckle up folks because this could be the most exciting offense we may ever see in the Shoe this year.
hammbone1928 (May 4, 2006 6:53:25 PM)
What am I doing wrong, I have sent 2 or 3 messages & no response? This is only the 3rd. time I have sat in a chat/ The other times my questions were ansewered

GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 6:56:04 PM)
13-0...why not! Forget about being politically correct! How's that 82dBuckeye? Bring it on. National Champions again. JT wins them in bunches. At YSU it was '91 '93 '94 and '97. He still needs to string a couple together at OSU. Smile!

Gary, you're just living the dream, aren't you? Which is the favorite part of your job? A little off topic, but just got me wondering if it is the interactions with kids, coaches, etc, etc. Also, a little information about how the process begins, when you first make contact with a new player, or his parents, etc. Do you simply use name recognition with scout.com, or are they told by someone else that you will be involved throughout?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:01:29 PM)
Coop I do really enjoy the relationships that I've established with both coaches and players over the years. I would say that's the best part and I would hope that is the one thing that separates me from everyone else. And my camera helps a lot believe me. Kids know when they see me they're going to be on the Internet. I just make sure that people know who I am and who I work for when I speak with someone. It's a lot of fun. It's a lot of work when you consider I put in a full 40/48 hours with my "real" job, but it's a labor of love and I work for two great people. Thanks for asking Coop...and now that you're back in Ohio I hope to run into you again sometime.
hammbone1928 (May 4, 2006 7:03:24 PM)
Gary what will be the no of schollies including what will be picked up normal atrition this summer 20 to 22? & do you tosu will tend to be a little more of def, say 2 to 3?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:03:25 PM)
Hi hammbone...Steve is the recruiting number guru... but I tend to think it will be around the 20 to 22 mark as you have alluded to. I actually think it will be a pretty even split when the numbers are all added up between offense and defense.
Heater (May 4, 2006 7:10:08 PM)
I alot of folks on the boards say that Saine looks like Robert Smith when he glides his strides. Robert Smith comparisons are pretty tall. Is that the kind of running back he would be? Or from Buckeyes past, who would compare him to?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:10:08 PM)
Heater I wouldn't say Robert Smith at all. Smith was a strider like none I've really seen at the high school level. I haven't seen Saine in person so I can't really give you a good comparison. From the film I've seen he seems to be more of north-south, no frills guy with a ton of speed. I'm guessing he's more finesse than power. I really haven't seen someone with his combination of size and speed. Walter Reyes from Syracuse and Struthers High School is the back that he reminds me of the most. But Saine is much bigger than Reyes was in high school.

Gary, who is the best recruiter on the OSU staff from the stories you have heard? It sounds obvious that it is JT, but excluding him, who do you think does the best job based on talking to recruits, etc?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:12:13 PM)
Coop I've always heard good things from kids being recruited by Bollman. He seems to be able to relate to the young kids pretty well believe it or not. Fickell is dynamite and Beck seems to be pretty solid too. I'm not saying the others aren't but I think I've just been exposed more to the kids that three I've mentioned are being recruited by.
Guest (May 4, 2006 7:14:45 PM)
With Ogelsby out of the picture, who is the next big O-lineman that the OSU recruiting staff focuses on?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:14:45 PM)
I'm waiting to find that out Klein...In state I give the nod to Nick Schepis right now. I like the tough hard nosed guys like Connor Smith and Schepis has that potential. I don't know if he's quiet as nasty as Smith is on the field. I hope to find out more tomorrow.

i'm concerned about the OL? doesn't seem like we have enought depth at tackle in out years?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:20:58 PM)
I pks...I think our young depth at tackle is just fine. Jon Skinner may play a bigger role down the line than any of us are expecting. He had a fine spring I was told. But yes you can never have too many offensive line prospects. This year is pivotal as far as a depth standpoint down the line. Barton could possibly leave early and that could make the situation more urgent.

Will USC have any downturn in recruiting this year or are the teflon coated at this point?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:22:25 PM)
Marksgforce, I don't think they will suffer unless Pete Carroll jumps ship.
hammbone1928 (May 4, 2006 7:24:32 PM)
Speaking of LB's what do you know about the kid from AJ's school,T.Repologe? Had 107 T 24 for loss & 8 sacks. Have you ever seen him play?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:24:32 PM)
Hammbone I have to admit I'm not hip to T. Pepologe at this time. I'll look for his name at the combine if he's there. Thanks for the heads up. Keep me posted on guys like that from your neck of the woods at email@example.com hammbone.
labuck (May 4, 2006 7:26:07 PM)
Don't you think that that even with the verbal from Saine we will take one more RB just on numbers alone? We don't want to fall into a situation back when JaJa Riley transfered and injuries left us short. If we take one, who will it be? Herron, Mabin, Williams, or maybe Nexu?
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:26:07 PM)
I'd bring Mabin aboard because he can find a potential home on either side of the ball. I cannot stress enough about how good of an offensive player Mabin is...but I know he's too small...I've heard that one before! Mabin can play football. My kind of guy!

I was at the coaches clinic spring game weekend the coaches were able to watch practice was real imperessed with the way D-fenc line coach works with players it is real easy to see why our def has been so succesfull
GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:29:23 PM)
Juice I'm a big Jim Heacock fan for starters. He's from West Branch High School and I am a homer as everyone knows by now. Luke Fickell has obviously come into his own as a football coach so I really like the present and future of the Ohio State defense. And I don't see either of the two going any where any time soon. The defense is in good hands.

GaryHousteau (May 4, 2006 7:31:23 PM)
20 to 22 hammbone...but make sure you ask Steve that on his chat tomorrow. He's much more in tune to the numbers in that department than I am. The way I figure it is why should I figure it out myself when all I have to do is find out what Steve says. Steve knows anything and everything about numbers and statics and records. He's a friggin walking encyclodpedia on all things Buckeye!

If LLLLoy loses 4 or more games this year, including THE GAME and his bowl, could he be forced out? ScUMmers like to take shots at OSU as the "graveyard of coaches" and brag that they don't fire coaches, but Bump Elliot might disagree after Woody "owned" him.

I want to apologize for the delays both at the beginning and in the middle of the chat. It must be a software glich. It seems to be happening more regularly. Maybe it just happens with my software. But I want to thank those of you who stayed with me. It was great to chat with you all this evening. I'm looking forward to the Nike camp on Friday very much. When you consider I was at the Browns combine on Tuesday, and the Nike camp tomorrow, I'll probably have seen almost all of the top players in Ohio and and some in Michigan by weeks end. And then whoever I don't see Friday, I'll probably see at the Dayton Invitational track meet on Saturday. Should be lots of fun. Have a great weekend...I sure will.
