Started? What did I miss.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 7:56:18 AM)
Nothing yet, nobody has asked a ???
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 7:56:27 AM)
Hi Steve- Did OSU get Eric Shultz from Clyde as a walk-on ? Any one else of note ? Any updates on Derrell Johnson ? Thanks !!
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 7:56:59 AM)
I think it is Eric Schwartz, and, yes, I believe he told Duane Long from our staff he plans to walk on. Have not heard of anybody else yet. ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 7:57:32 AM)
Derrell Johnson was waiting for a May 1 admissions hearing. I understand the committee has postponed that hearing for maybe 2-3 weeks, so I guess he is still waiting.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 7:57:42 AM)
You see a leader for an Offer at QB? Who do you like for OSU to offer here?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 7:57:58 AM)
I'm not Joe Daniels or Jim Tressel, so it would only be a guess, but ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 7:59:38 AM)
Our database shows they have already offered one QB for 2007 in Stephen Garcia of Tampa Jefferson. He is 6-3, 212 and has offers from Alabama, Florida, Ole Miss, South Carolina, FSU and Georgia. He threw for 2800 yards and 27 TDs as a junior. Here in Ohio ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:00:43 AM)
My guess is either Clay Belton or Chris Smith. Belton figures to be at OSU today for Nike. Not sure about Smith. Maybe a good showing today helps one of them or the staff waits for the summer advanced camp dates to see if they like either of them or somebody else better. My pick today would be Belton, but I also really like Smith. We shall see.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:00:51 AM)
Ray Small? your best Guestimation. Is he a part of this class?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:01:38 AM)
I guess for reasons unclear he was not able to test untimed, and I think that would have helped his cause. But I think he has through the June tests to get what he needs. I think he makes it. It's all up to him, really.
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 8:01:53 AM)
Did you get a chance to see OT Josh Kerr ? Any chance of him cracking the two-deep right away ? Hope Schaefer is not in the 2-deep mix quite honestly.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:03:19 AM)
I watched the spring game live and on replay once. Kerr was beaten for a sack, as I recall. He has a chance to be in the two-deep. Schafer, actually, must have had a pretty good spring because he is battling for the open guard spot with Rehring and Skinner. If Boone has to sit out, Schafer could also get a look at tackle. Still early on Kerr (I think he will be a soph), so he has time to make his mark.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:03:34 AM)
This may be old news, haven't frequented the boards as much of late, But when will a university decision come Down on Boone, and if action isn't taken there do you see Tress keeping him out more than one game. In other words will he be in there against Texas?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:05:11 AM)
I am not sure what the timetable will be for student judicial affairs to act on Boone. It's probably a private matter. My feeling is he will not start the opening game, but could still play in it if the coach feels he has earned it. It sounds like the judicial penalty would be served in the summer, so he should be clear for the fall. I would think he will be on the field for Texas. I want to see more out of him honestly. He gave up a sack in the spring game. Time to engage.
hamm1928 (May 5, 2006 8:05:48 AM)
with State of Oh being loaded with D>B.'s .Probably the most ever. C's Have offered 5 C'sno particular order D.Allen Lake O. M. cousin to Gant & played with him, A. Black Fl.. E. Berry Fl. ranked top 100,D.Evege HH might be the next commit ?.D Warren Poly Ca. ( school as KYR. seems to be very interested, has many schollies, claims JT saw him play as a soph.My Question a 2 parter how many C's do you think they will get? & who will thsy be?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:08:25 AM)
I think Allen likes Ohio State well enough. Can they convince him to turn his back on Michigan, though. My thought is they will sign at least two corners in this class. I think Evege probably has OSU as a solid No. 1 and is just waiting to make his verbal when he feels he is ready. It would be great to get one of the ones you mentioned from out of state. Another name is Ronald Johnson from Michigan. My guess would be Evege and Allen. He just looked comfortable at the spring game.
buckeyeinsaline (May 5, 2006 8:09:31 AM)
Hey Steve ! How many scholarships does OSU have to give for 2007?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:10:51 AM)
I have them with 84 scholarships (not counting Cotton) and they lose 16. So as of today they can take 17. That number goes up if/when say Devin Jordan is moved to medical waiver and/or somebody leaves early (think No. 7). So my guess is they will eventually have close to 20 if not right on 20.
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 8:10:56 AM)
Glad Wes Lyons is back at WR. Where do you see him contributing. Loved him ever since the Big 33 game !
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:11:48 AM)
He missed spring ball at receiver because he was at safety, I assume that means he goes to the back of the line at WR. My thought on the spring was that Ginn, Gonzo, Hall, Robiskie and Hartline earned playing time. Dukes and Lyons and anybody else will probably have to wait.
buckeyeinsaline (May 5, 2006 8:11:57 AM)
Steve - Please give us a report on Nike Camp impressions (especially OL cadidates) when you can. How many participants are attending? Where are they coming from?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:14:58 AM)
Nike is not our event, so I'm not privy to any pre-registrations. I agree, it will be interesting to see who shows up. Some interesting names are out there like Jordan Mabin, Clay Belton, Joseph Barksdale, Frank Edmonds, Nick Sukay, Solomon Thomas, Vince Harris, Morgan Williams, Vincent Brown, Charlie Hatcher, Nick Schepis, Carlton Peake. I imagine guys will come from a 6- or 8-state radius to check out OSU and work out.
leo moceri (May 5, 2006 8:15:13 AM)
what time is the nike camp starting?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:15:28 AM)
Starts around 3 and will probably run until 8 or so, I would bet.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:15:33 AM)
Last update on Deonte Thompson there was no "interest" or mention of OSU. Has that ship sailed?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:17:21 AM)
I see mostly a list of southern schools for a camp tour. Big key will be if Dukes/Holmes can convince him to visit Ohio State. OSU has no shot if they can't get him to at least come up for a weekend or something.
leo moceri (May 5, 2006 8:17:29 AM)
hello steve, your comments on saine please........
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:18:56 AM)
Great get. No doubt. I read in the Dayton paper that he wants to race a kid from Michigan who has gone as low as 10.21 in the 100. He hopes by using that kid as his rabbit he can break the Ohio record of 10.5 or something like that. At 205 pounds, that is great to hear he has that kind of speed. They really needed a tailback in this class. Great to see a kid have the confidence to not worry about the competition and go where he wants to go.
gbms29 (May 5, 2006 8:19:04 AM)
Hi Steve. Yesterday on Gary's chat he said that he heard bad news about Ben Martin. Do you know what that news is?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:20:48 AM)
I am sorry, I have no inclination what that could be. I know ND has worked him hard. Chris Pool quoted the coach as saying ND has a 60/40 edge over OSU. Martin visited both in the spring and just had Weis in his school last week. Maybe that 60-40 thing was what Gary was referring to.
SackMonster33 (May 5, 2006 8:20:59 AM)
A quick jump to basketball, Steve. With all of the scheduling of big time teams for the Buckeyes next year, do you think it might be a bit much for these younger guys to handle, especially early in the season?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:22:35 AM)
It might be. I imagine there will be a blend. Kyle is reporting that they will possibly host the Black Coaches Association preseason tournament. That means possibly 2-3 winnable games there. Iowa State should be down with the guards defecting. UC is down with so many defections as well. ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:23:57 AM)
The games with UNC and Florida and possibly with kansas really command your attention. But with those extra games, OSU can probably withstand a 10-3 or 11-2 nonconference showing and still do well in the Big Ten and get a good seed. You don't want to be like Izzo that one year and schedule over your head and go 6-6 out of conference and struggle to make the tournament. I think his eyes got too big that one year.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:24:20 AM)
They will know where they stand if/when they play UNC and Florida. That is for sure.
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 8:24:23 AM)
Encouraging some of the younger DB's are receiving good marks ie Anderson Russell and Kurt Coleman. I liked Sirjo Welch on special teams his frosh year but he seems to have disappeared. Not another Sian Cotton case is it ?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:25:49 AM)
Welch just has not engendered the trust of the coaches. I understand he doesn't like to lift and train as hard in the off-season. That hurts when he is compared with others who are working hard in the weight room. He has shown he will make plays on punts, etc. Will he ever be more than just that? I don't know.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:26:15 AM)
Agreed on Coleman and Russell. They were 2 of the stars from the spring. I don't know how Russell doesn't play, in fact.
Guest (May 5, 2006 8:26:19 AM)
Can OSU really offer all the outstanding DB's in Ohio this year?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:26:37 AM)
goodguy asks if OSU can really offer all of the outstanding DBs in Ohio this year ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:27:56 AM)
No, there is no way they can do it. Some of them may have grade issues that hurt them. Obviously, they like Oliver and Clifford enough to already offer them. No urgency on the rest until OSU is comfortable football-wise and academically (not to paint a broad brush that all of them have grade issues, of course).
keato (May 5, 2006 8:28:00 AM)
Steve, we have heard rumblings of kids who may commit sometime soon do you have anymore info for us?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:28:44 AM)
No, it is quiet here. I think there is anticipation that one or more kids could commit while in town for Nike. I've never seen this kind of event, where OSU will have just a small presence, make that big of a deal. We'll see tonight, I guess.
ToledoBucknutty (May 5, 2006 8:29:05 AM)
Morning Steve.....you rock as always! Are there links to all of the features that you did on O, D, and special teams....I didn't get to read all of them. Our running back stable is looking a little nutty right now....or if you will, IN-SAINE. Looks like we will be really set for the next few years (as if we weren't already). Are they still going to push really hard for those backs from Wisconsin and Chicago in your opinion?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:29:17 AM)
Thanks for the compliments ToledoBucknnutty ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:30:12 AM)
You can read all of our old work by clicking on Top Stories in the dropdown menu (just below the Hot News list at the top of the site). Pull it down and click All Stories. You will get a list that goes back several weeks and will give you everything from the spring ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:31:00 AM)
My guess is they don't need another TB in this class. That would give them 5 for next year with Pittman, Wells, Wells, Haw and Saine. But if a great one wants in they'd be foolish to take a pass.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:31:12 AM)
They may have their quota, though.
keato (May 5, 2006 8:31:14 AM)
Steve, are you a little surprised Youboty went in the 3rd round?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:32:10 AM)
Yes, I thought he was great. It's like people watched the Minnesota tape and held it against him and then they didn't watch it and give Kudla the credit he deserved (fourth-down stop on Maroney to go with the bench press mark at the combine) ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:33:13 AM)
Youboty is a big, athletic corner. Yes, he got torched by Ellerson and somewhat by two M's (the kid from Ohio that went to UM). But I thought otherwise he had a great 2-year run. You watch his body of work and how can you not be impressed. Oh well, he'll just make it on the next deal.
leo moceri (May 5, 2006 8:33:21 AM)
steve who are 5 must get kids this year in your opinion
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:33:52 AM)
Oh my, that's hard ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:34:17 AM)
But you definitely want Ben Martin. Saine would have been in that group, of course. As far as four others, hmmm. ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:34:54 AM)
I like Toney Clemons a lot, but they have not offered. We'll have to see on that. You would have said Oglesby, but he's off the chart now. ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:36:08 AM)
Probably Joseph Barksdale because DT is a position of need. ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:36:19 AM)
The best OL they can get (maybe Kris O'Dowd) ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:37:00 AM)
And after that, maybe Eugene Clifford and/or Donnie Evege. That's 6 names: Martin, Clemons, Barksdale, O'Dowd or best OL, Clifford and Evege.
buckeyeinsaline (May 5, 2006 8:37:10 AM)
Steve - How often does JT go out of his way to make a personal visit like he did with Saine this past week? Any other JT visits in the past 4-5 weeks that you know of? Any planned? ( I know your not his travel coordinator, lol)
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:39:09 AM)
Tressel, I think, enjoys the travel and getting out to evaluate kids in person and meet them and their coaches and their families, as permitted by NCAA rules. I know the first day or 2 he could be out he was in the D.C. area. I assume they send him where they think he needs to be. The eval period began the week after spring football ended. Basically from that date through end of May, I believe they have 4 weeks where they can choose to send 7 guys on the road. I assume they rotate so that everybody doesn't have to spend all 4 weeks on the road -- or, if they do, most of that time is in and around the state.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:39:19 AM)
But on the flipside, didn't they make the final four that year they barely got in?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:40:01 AM)
You are referring to MSU. I'd have to research it. But I think the year he went nuts was before 04-05 (when they made the Final Four). It was after the 00 title and before 05.
hamm1928 (May 5, 2006 8:40:26 AM)
Wth the crowd at LB How many do you think they will offer?& Would Daily be one of them?, he just showed up recently. What do you think of TReplogle from AJ's school. Very interesting Stat's= 107 T, T forL=24!!! sacks 8 not many people know about him What do you know about S. Paskorz Pa? Where would you put A. Dailey Mass? They offered 2 Colasanti he's off the Board. who else will they offer besides Dailey who has offer
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:43:08 AM)
Maybe Colasanti going to PSU opens a spot in their mind for Dailey. I like him a lot. Good nose for the football. Haven't heard much on Replogle, but you can't afford to overlook a Centerville kid. Paskorz, a PA kid, is 6-2, 220 and has offers from Michigan, Pitt, OSU, WVU and others. He is an intriguing prospect.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:43:25 AM)
I do you get to the biggest stage in CF and not feel like lifting and improving? That is a head scratcher for sure.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:44:11 AM)
Some guys think if they overtrain in the weight room it can hurt their speed and agility. It is a concern to not get too bulky sometimes. I don't honestly know what the balance is there. Not my area (ha ha).
tgif (May 5, 2006 8:44:23 AM)
Do you envision any of our football assistants taking jobs elsewhere in the near future? Any former Buckeyes (recent NFL retirees for example) looking to get assistant coaching positions? I would love to see the likes of Tupa, Vrabel, Eddie, or even Robert Smith come back and coach.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:45:33 AM)
I don't look for Eddie George or Robert Smith to coach. They are probably set for life with their football money and business ventures. You need to understand that coaching college football is rewarding on Sat. afternoons in the fall. The rest of the time it's a real grind. Why would a guy who is independently wealthy do that?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:45:59 AM)
Vrabel is a possibility. Not sure about Tupa. He's been in the league going on 20 years. Maybe he just wants to rest (ha ha).
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 8:46:51 AM)
Steve- On Scout.com we keep reading how Weis is really hustling. Having people in the school, visiting homes etc. Are we keeping pace with this ?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:47:18 AM)
Sure. Tressel will be on the road as much as he is allowed and as much as is practical. Don't worry about that.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:47:32 AM)
Barksdale maybe? rumored to be an early committ pre-spring
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:47:57 AM)
Maybe. We'll have to see. He likes the Buckeyes and they have a definite need at DT. Both spots wide open in 2007.
daytonbuck (May 5, 2006 8:48:03 AM)
Steve, who are your top 10 prospects for football next year in Ohio. I know we have 2 of them.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:50:04 AM)
I do not have Duane's list in front of me. But I think of some of the names he had in there. They were Martin, Morgan Williams, Jermale Hines, Hosea Simpson, Brian Gamble, Clifford, Oliver, Belton, Saine, Solomon Thomas. I think that's most of them, not in any particular order.
goodguy (May 5, 2006 8:50:20 AM)
Stever Ignore me if this has been asked. From what I've seen, Saine may be better suited for WR. Of course we won't know for some time, but what do you think based on his film.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:51:03 AM)
Duane says he is an I-formation tailback who can make guys miss or run over them. I like that he had 300 receiving yards as a junior, though. I am sure they will use him as they see fit.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 8:51:13 AM)
Who is that one guy that could open the flood gates, or can do his own recruiting, ala Chirs Wells, TGII, is Saine that guy or is he still out there?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:52:16 AM)
I think Martin has that reputation as a "high end" guy that he could really help them. Those athletes in that St. Ed, Glenville, McKinley, Massillon corridor all butt heads in all of the sports. They all know each other, so one could spark all of them if they all get offered.
hamiltuckbuck (May 5, 2006 8:52:24 AM)
Hey Steve. I get the impression that Clifford really wants offers from the Florida schools. Any chance he goes south, and spurns both OSU and ttun?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:52:53 AM)
I doubt it. My guess is he ends up at OSU with Moeller and Smith. I could be wrong, though. He is just taking his time. No harm in that.
buckeyeinsaline (May 5, 2006 8:52:57 AM)
Steve - From everything rumored out of campus, Troy Smith seems to have gotten his head straight and is setting the example as a leader. How many days to first game? YEA!
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:53:26 AM)
You hope that is the case. he is saying all the right things. Hold your breath until Jan. 9, 2007, and hope he makes it through the year unscathed.

JT Travels to NJ and FL next week.
HH (May 5, 2006 8:54:04 AM)
On QB's , your Garcia question, they did offer him, along with Bostick and Palulus. I believe Garcia would be the 3rd choice.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:54:38 AM)
I need to follow up on Bostick. He had not been offered the last time I talked to him but that could have changed. HH also has a comment on the Nike camp ...
HH (May 5, 2006 8:54:41 AM)
Coaches are not "allowed" on the field for the Nike event. Last time a couple stood on the film stands up high. I don't think you will see many, if any offers from this. It would almost be illegal.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:55:19 AM)
Perhaps you know the rules or something. I know I do not have a rulebook and nobody has clued me in on what's legal and what's not. I can only go by past experience ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:56:19 AM)
Our combine at Akron last year was in an eval period and Brookhart and his guys were on the field timing 40s, taking notes and "brushing into kids." At Pitt in March, not an eval period, no assistants anywhere in sight. We'll see tonight, I guess. But if you're saying no definitively, that may be true.
hamm1928 (May 5, 2006 8:56:49 AM)
This is my ist yr. Tremendous show 2 parter. With off. & Def. Lines being top priorty 1. Besides N Schepis in O. is there anyone else in O.?OOS Besides O'Dowd ( What are our chances there) who else ?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 8:58:27 AM)
Agreed on the lines being top priority. They are now set at QB, RB, TE, OK at WR, LB and pretty good at DB. This is mostly a complementary class, in some regards, except at DL and OL where they need guys who will be ready to rock by 2008. Schepis may be the best. Not a good year in Ohio for OL. He is Duane's highest ranked one, I believe.
buckicrazy (May 5, 2006 8:58:35 AM)
Steve, How hard is it going to be for tOSU to bring in a WR this year with all of the depth? Can we land a bluechip or do we go after a guy that might not have as many stars but has a good work ethic?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:00:19 AM)
I'd like to know what the disconnect is with Toney Clemons. Maybe it's grades, maybe they have not evaluated him fully and/or they have and don't like everything they see. I'm not going to speak for the staff. That is their call because it's their job on the line. I hear a lot of nice things about Chris Givens from Chillicothe. He has the frame at 6-3, 195. I think they take one at least, but with Robiskie, Hartline, Dukes and Lyons waiting in the wings and possibly Small coming in, I think they're in good shape.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:00:36 AM)
IS MDA done, or was the spring sitout purely precautionary?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:01:46 AM)
No, they are not ruling him out. He did not go full-go in winter conditioning and was held out for most of the spring. The feeling was "why risk a setback in the spring that would end his last chance?" They must feel comfortable that he knows the scheme. I question whether he will be able to run and play like he did before the injury ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:02:44 AM)
I also question whether the knee will ever allow him to play full-go contact football ever again. If it could, he probably would have been out there for limited reps. Never say never, but it looks unlikely. They will go with Kerr or maybe Laurinaitis in the middle if Homan earns a starting spot outside.
Hicks74 (May 5, 2006 9:02:57 AM)
Steve-We have a glut of talent even after this year at WR-DE-LB-DB but DT is dangerously thin with only Abdallah and Denlinger coming back. If Larimore redshirts this year a true frosh will need to get thrown into the fire next year or maybe Worthington moves inside ?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:04:23 AM)
Yes, they have some options. I doubt Worthington sees himself as a DT just yet. But if Rose sparks them this fall, he could replace Richardson in the end rotation and Worthington's fastest path to playing time will be at DT. Heacock always sorts this out to the betterment of the team. I'm sure he will do so again. I agree they need 1-2 DTs, though, in this class or, better yet, a total of 3 over the 2007 and 2008 classes.

SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:05:04 AM)
Yeah, we'll do them from time to time. Most of our effort on video is focused on the players and recruit video. We will do more if and when time allows.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:05:32 AM)
We'd like to be able to do unlimited video, but we are not there yet. We'd like to splice some action stuff into those pieces too.

S's Besides Oliver & Clifford. What about M.Wright has all the biggies after him. Interesting story about his visit to ND his quote( Weis told them that we have a great opportunity to come in & play for him( not N.D.) Only a certain amount of players have the opportunity to come in & play for him. EGO!!!!
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:07:57 AM)
Major Wright is that player from Ft. Lauderdale STAquinas (Salley went there I believe). Maybe HH if he's still around can provide a status report on him (offer, schools, etc.). He goes 6-1,204 and runs a 4.55 40.

SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:08:25 AM)
OSU-UNC is Nov. 29 at 9 p.m. on ESPN from the Dean Dome in Chapel Hill.

I would hope this means OSU hosts Duke or UNC the year after.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:09:32 AM)
Hey, with Greg Oden prowling the paint, all things are possible ... even road wins at Florida and UNC. He can be that good if he gets the proper respect from the refs.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:10:47 AM)
Oden vs. Noah That will be interesting.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:11:37 AM)
Yep, Noah was an athletic beast in the NCAA. Oden should be able to hold his own with him, though. Will the rest of the group come to play? That will probably decide it.
eo (May 5, 2006 9:11:54 AM)
Noah is obnoxious. I would love to see Oden smack one of his layups into the second row.

TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:12:33 AM)
no argument here
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:12:35 AM)
Is there anything else we can do today??
eo (May 5, 2006 9:13:07 AM)
Steve - getting here late. I apologize if this question was asked. How much interaction are the OSU coaches having with the recruits this weekend at the Nike Camp?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:15:03 AM)
I was told they could be in the building because it is an evaluation period. The NCAA has so many screwy rules, I am sure OSU's compliance staff has vetted the situation and they'll stay within the rules. Do you know at one time I believe they honestly had to advise recruits they had to leave campus after an event and come back before they could talk to them? There is no common sense in their rules. After this camp, it doesn't matter. NCAA has pulled camps off college campuses. Not sure what that does for things like summer basketball camps. It's all a joke, really ...
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:15:52 AM)
But I was told OSU coaches could have a presence. Whether that means being down on the field and timing 40s and chatting kids up or sitting in the office and waiting for them to drop by (that's how it was at one previous Nike camp years ago), we'll see.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:16:01 AM)
Mayorga vs. De La Hoya?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:16:12 AM)
DeLaHoya for old time sake (ha ha).
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:16:16 AM)
Give me a winning tri for the Run For the Roses.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:17:02 AM)
with 20 horses in there, you can make a ton of money just on win, place and show. I've learned not to spend too much on exotics. Do your homework and nail a nice 10-1 winner that will pay you $200 or something (ha ha).

Thanks Steve! No one ever said Myles Brand and Co were geniuses.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:18:07 AM)
Well, Brand has actually tried to inject some common sense and made it the "kindler, gentler" NCAA that gives kids like Huston a sixth year. I'll hold judgement on him in particular. I recently had an NCAA experience that just wasn't too pleasant. It's just a huge bureaucracy.
hamm1928 (May 5, 2006 9:18:13 AM)
1 final q. tough one how many Def. schollies do we get?
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:18:47 AM)
They shifted defense this past year heavy. If they take 18-19, maybe 8-9 will be on defense. They need 3-4 up front and rest in back seven.
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:18:51 AM)
Just a rough guess.
TheKaiser21 (May 5, 2006 9:18:55 AM)
Thanks for the info as always Steve
SteveHelwagen (May 5, 2006 9:19:15 AM)
Glad we could do it, almost 90 minutes. Stay tuned after 8 or later tonight for what we have on Nike.

Steve - Your the MAN !
