Housteau Chat Archive: May 12

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts club chat this afternoon to talk about the latest with OSU football and recruiting. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 9:53:24 AM)
Greetings and salutations to one and all.

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 9:56:45 AM)
Who are the oos QB's OS has offered, & who is Snedd Isgreen? Do you think they will stay with the Dual QB philosophy with the success they have had?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 9:56:45 AM)
Hi hammbone1928 the latest that heard there were two QBs in particular from OOS that OSU had offered or were focusing in on and I'll be honest with you I can't remember their names at this time. I haven't done much research with OOS players other than some of the obvious ones that were at the Nike camp last Friday. And I'm aware of Snedd Isgreen at this time either...sorry.

mulder (May 12, 2006 9:59:22 AM)
OK Gary, every year I ask you about western PA recruiting. Who ya gonna be checking out for us this year? Any hot tips?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 9:59:22 AM)
Hi mulder...Evan Blankenship continues to be the one name we keep hearing about. I was hoping to see him at the Scout combine in Pittsburgh and didn't and I was hoping to see him at the Nike combine as well and didn't so I don't know where he stands in particular. I like Clemons a lot but I don't believe OSU has offered. No real hot tips at this time about Western PA sorry.

buckgrad (May 12, 2006 10:01:03 AM)
Hows it hangin Gary? Small in or out this fall? And is it official DJ will not be in S&G?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:01:03 AM)
Hi buckgrad....Small is in and DJ is out. Can't say much more about that.

scribeohio (May 12, 2006 10:03:48 AM)
Gary, what's you plans for N/S and B33?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:03:48 AM)
I'm really bummed about it scribe...I haven't missed a North/South game since Katzenmoyer played in it but I can't be in two places at the same time. I really love both games and the rosters are pretty tremendous on all three squads if you ask me, but I can't pass up the chance to cover the Big 33 game in Hershey. It's my favorite place to go every summer. I'll more than likely be in Hershey this summer. I hope something can change in the future with these conflicting dates.

buckgrad (May 12, 2006 10:06:36 AM)
How is AP coming along? Full go by summer camp?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:06:36 AM)
Full go buckgrad. I love our backfield and I love the addition of Brandon Saine. It's hard to imagine Saine playing anywere else but RB but if they want to get him on the field early it won't be at RB. It would be scary to see him in the slot with all that size and speed. I was looking at his track pictures from this time a year ago at the state and his track pictures from last weekend and he looks a lot more developed in that time. Who knows how he will be in a year or even two from now. But Pittman should be full go by summer camp for certain.

scribeohio (May 12, 2006 10:08:51 AM)
Gary, do you think Mike Cochran returns to OSU?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:08:52 AM)
Scribe I will be completely shocked if it's not Mike Cochran for obvious and not so obvious reasons. I've made a couple calls in the past 24 hours and have heard nothing concrete to run with either direction with Cochran. Cochran is as loyal to JT as you can possibly be. It's a no-brainer for JT IMHO.

buckgrad (May 12, 2006 10:09:49 AM)
I just reread your response to Small, are you saying he IS in or are you guessing that he will make it?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:09:49 AM)
I'll just say he's in if you promise not to ask any follow up questions! Smile!

James Licavoli (May 12, 2006 10:14:08 AM)
hello gary...who impressed you the most at the nike camp? plus any inside word on barksdale?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:14:08 AM)
Hi James Licavoli...new name glad to have you aboard. I feel really good about Barksdale if I can answer the second part first. Let's just say I spoke to a couple of different people at the camp who had some positive things to say about Barksdale and OSU. I think ND might also be a player but right now I think OSU has a really good shot for sure. As for the second part, I hate to jump on the Martez Wilson bandwagon right now but he looked very impressive at wide receiver. Wow! I also thought John Clay was very impressive from the look test perspective. I heard through the grapevine that Clay will be giving Wisconsin his verbal any time soon. I like Hughes a lot as well. Instate, I liked William Johnson a lot from Centerville and I a guy like T.J. Latimore from Maple Heights looked pretty good.

Guest (May 12, 2006 10:17:03 AM)
Gary, just logged in. Have we talked about possible O line recruits? Any almost sure signings?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:17:03 AM)
mckbukeye asked about O-line recruits...I think there's more prospects in the junior class than the senior class next year. The dearth of top quality lineman in Ohio scares me a bit. I think Nick Schepis has to get an offer at this point. Beyond him I'm not certain where the other offers will come. We're looking at Blankenship and maybe O'dowd and beyond that group I don't know which direction they'll go in.

bigj (May 12, 2006 10:17:48 AM)
I heard that Chris Wells might be getting looks at moving to outside linebacker because of his size. Any truth to that?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:17:49 AM)
News to me bigi...big mistake if you ask me!

Guest (May 12, 2006 10:22:34 AM)
Gary, what chance of an OSU offer do you give Schepis/Browne? Camp determination?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:22:34 AM)
I think Schepis has a very realistic chance of getting an offer at this point. Both Peterson and Bollman were watching him very closely at camp. They either like him or not at this point. I think it's still more wait-and-see with Browne. I'm sorry to say but he plays in a very low competition D-V level league and I'm sure that most of the big boys will want to see more of him on tape this year before they offer. I personally don't see him as an offensive tackle at this point or any time in the future. I'm guessing schools want to see him terrorize people on defense this year before they would extend him an offer. I like Vince a lot but I think if he can wait until midseason or later to commit he might have better offers. He said he wants to commit before the season starts.

PigMan (May 12, 2006 10:24:07 AM)
How many of the top 10 in Ohio do we land next year?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:24:07 AM)
Hey PigMan...I don't have Duane's top 10 in front of me but if can list it for me in another question I'll try to answer that for you.

jliv77 (May 12, 2006 10:25:57 AM)
Good afternoon. Here is a little change of pace for you...What is the best question you have been asked (in the history of you in these chat rooms), and how did you answer?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:25:57 AM)
Hi jliv77...I appreciate the question but I really don't have any quick answer that comes to mind right now and I hate to dwell it now while there are a host of other questions to get to. I'll try to think of something as I continue on with the chat...but I can't point to any one question right now.

PigMan (May 12, 2006 10:28:21 AM)
Give me a lock for an OOS recruit.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:28:21 AM)
I won't give it a lock but the closest person to one would have to be Barksdale.

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 10:31:48 AM)
I missed the connection of Bowman in regards to rec. of D allen. I know about Gant being his cousin etc. Did OS offer a Scholly or what. How is this suppose to effect the recruiting picture.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:31:48 AM)
Hammbone...Gant and Bowman came in for an official visit together late in the process and at the time Bowman had already given a verbal to Iowa. There were rumors circulating after the visit that Bowman might change his commit to OSU but that scenario never came to fruition. I never followed up with Bowman to get his official interpretation of what happened but as it turned out Bowman stayed with Iowa and the rest is history. I'm not sure if OSU offered him after his visit or not.

manhattan buck (May 12, 2006 10:32:51 AM)
Do we have a chance to land John Clay? He seems like a complete stud. I know were already loaded here, but he might beat out all four rbs next year.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:32:51 AM)
Hi Manhattan buck...No...if my sources are correct, the same ones that told me that Oglesby was going to Wisconsin, then Clay will likely give a verbal to Wisconsin sooner rather than later.

hotline2victory (May 12, 2006 10:37:05 AM)
Besides Givens, are there any D1 recruits in SE Ohio.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:37:05 AM)
Sure if you count Chris Smith and maybe Dante Jackson as SE ohio. Steubenville is a great team obviously and have some of their top juniors returning but I don't think any of them, the QB Collaros or the RBMcGhee in particular. One player for the Big Red I did like was their DE Dreylon Pree but he may be a bit undersized. Steubenville has a good chance to repeat in Division III no question.

manhattan buck (May 12, 2006 10:41:19 AM)
TOUGHEST STADIUMS TO PLAY IN: Nebraska LSU Florida and Penn State and some others including Wisconsin all get reputations as the loudest and toughest places to play at in the US. OSU is up there as well but schools like PENN STATE have recently hired PR coordinators that play music and organize "white outs" like they did against us last year. My question is how do we take the best fan base in the country like Ohio State and also make it the loudest and most intimidating school to play in the country?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:41:19 AM)
I was fortunate enough to be at field level for Ohio State-Texas and Penn State-Ohio State and I obviously got bigger chills down my spine from the crowd at Ohio Stadium. I really did like what Penn State had going on and even one of the players after that mentioned that they wished OSU's student section was as good as Penn State's. But I have a pat answer to any stadium question whether it be in regards to aestetics or noise levels...There may possibly be others that are just as good but I can't see how any stadium in the country can be any better for a game then our beloved Horseshoe.

PigMan (May 12, 2006 10:44:22 AM)
With our depth at LB, Chris Wells isn't going anywhere. But speaking of Wells, what have you heard about how well he picked up the offense this spring? What keeps most guys off the field is learning their assignments.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:44:22 AM)
I talked to Wells first of all and he thinks that he's learned quite a lot himself. I'm sure having this spring under his belt did him a world of good. I'm certain that JT will put Wells in a position to make plays first of all to give him confidence before they ask any more of him. I don't see Beanie having a monster year like Clarett but I see him having a very productive first year no question.

hotline2victory (May 12, 2006 10:45:32 AM)
Who are the best college strength and conditioning coaches?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:45:33 AM)
I'm sorry hotline I really have no sort of reference to answer a question like that sorry.

manhattan buck (May 12, 2006 10:49:27 AM)
Why do we seem to have the most trouble with recruiting linemen? We do such a great job especially in state at other positions. This year is an off year. If we need three who realistically do you predict and how will this or next years oline class rank?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:49:27 AM)
I'll take Ohio linemen and not worry about one other offensive lineman every year. Maybe a PA guy or two every once in a while. Forget going out of state for offensive linemen every year. Our most productive lineman are usually from Ohio any way. That being said, last year OSU couldn't land many of the top ones for whatever reason and this year there aren't many top ones in Ohio out there. My solution...just keep harvesting the best Ohio has to offer every year, make them a top priority and Ohio State will be fine. Next year's class has some early potential. And Marcus Hall of Glenville (just a freshman this year) should be offered right now. This is Thee Ohio State University.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:53:37 AM)
Guys while there seem to be so many questions in queue I wanted to share this with you all before I forget about it. Last week at the Don Mitchell Relays in Dayton, Glenville lost the 4X400 relay race to Trotwood and that's the race more than any other that defines the Glenville track program. But I have to tell you all how proud you would have been to see TGII step up and give a pep talk to the team at the end of the meet. This young man has matured so much in my eyes over the past five years that I've known him, it's just amazing. I'm certain that TGII will go out with bang next season at Ohio State. A major bang!

Guest (May 12, 2006 10:57:10 AM)
Whatever happened to the Portsmouth OL who went to Penn State?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:57:10 AM)
Cadagen is his name hotline2victory. I believe I saw him last year at Ohio State and I think he was in street clothes if I remember correctly. Duane was high on him and Chauncy Incarnotto that year. Cadagen still has a chance to pan out but Incarnotto left Notre Dame and I'm not sure where he went if anywhere. Neither of the two were high on my list.

manhattan buck (May 12, 2006 10:58:22 AM)
I agree 100% The horsehoe is the best stadium by far and the fans are awsome. My question was only based on the fact that Ive been to games at Nebraska LSU, and PENN State, and many others. But those three were the loudest, and ours was close. Just searching for ways to make the shoe even MORE intimidating thanks.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 10:58:22 AM)
It's pretty intimidating if you ask me Manhattanbuck. Again there may be other places who are just as good but I don't see how you can get any better.

mckbuckeye (May 12, 2006 11:01:00 AM)
Do you think either Homan or Grant will be starters by the middle of the season?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:01:00 AM)
Mckbuckeye I certainly think Homan might have to be. I've been a big John Kerr fan for the longest time and I still am based on the fact that he makes football plays when given the opportunity. But even I think now that Kerr just might have to possibly yield to Homan at some point during the season. Homan is that good in my eyes. And I think he can play in the middle. Homan may be OSU's best linebacker right now!

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 11:05:48 AM)
Since OS took 5 LB's 06, & Has offered D. Elliott, do you think they will take another LB? ^ who would be on their list?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:05:49 AM)
hamm Ohio State needs to seriously consider giving Jermale Hines an offer right now. Hines is a football player and he's got great quickness and 4.56 speed. Sure he needs to put a little weight on but that will come in time. He's a great athlete and a great hoops player. He's just a kid that is only going to get better. Jermale has become my Rob Rose of this year, I talk to him as much as any player from Glenville on the phone. Does Ohio State have a shot if they offer? You bet ya they do. I think they will offer and I think he will be a Buckeye. I have to check out Elliott more myself before I'm sold on him. C.J. Peake is huge and he may grow into a linebacker. I would be all over him too.

PigMan (May 12, 2006 11:07:33 AM)
Barksdale is certainly a great place to start!

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:07:33 AM)
I agree Pigman and Allen and Washington would be a great place to finish. Don't know if that will happen or not but I think OSU has a decent chance. I'm not so sure about Ronald Johnson...didn't get a great OSU vibe from him. He seems like a great kid, just like the other three but I don't think OSU has a great chance with him from talking to him and a couple of other people about him.

manhattan buck (May 12, 2006 11:09:09 AM)
Gary, How much influence with ABC and ESPN do we have in scheduling nightgames? Seems like Penn St. is a natural for this.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:09:09 AM)
I don't think "we" meaning OSU has any influence in that regard. Iowa and Texas will suffice if you ask me. I like beating Penn State at home in the daytime. Don't mess with a good thing.

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 11:10:58 AM)
Do you think OS will stay with the Dual QB philosophy , with the success the y have had & with A. Henton comimg & material they have?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:10:58 AM)
I think when you see Rob Schoenhoft running the option during spring ball then you have your answer right there. But with Chris Wells in the backfield, I can see a straight I formation future with play action, I tend to favor that offense more but JT loves to have a mobile qb to give him that run option when all else fails.

woody68 (May 12, 2006 11:18:02 AM)
Gary, who are your top 3 players in Ohio for the 2008 class?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:18:02 AM)
That's a tough one woody68. I don't think I can name just three. I think Shawntel "Shaq" Rowell will be in high demand at Glenville. I really like the game-breaking potential of Johnny Adams of Buchtel. I think Brandon Beachum is going to be a beast for Cardinal Mooney. Darius Ashley has to be considered even though he's a bit on the small side. I think Mike Adams and Zerbie Sanders are top O-line guys. Mike Zordich from Mooney is up there. Any three from there are solid picks. Shaq is already shaping up at Glenville. He looks great. He could be a nightmare for any offense but he says they're only going to play him on offense next year.

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 11:19:25 AM)
DE how many do you see OS taking?& what do know of S. Thomas of W. Chester?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:19:25 AM)
I would be very happy to see OSU take Martin and Thomas. I hope they get at least one of them if not both. Two will be fine but just one will do because the position is so deep and young right now.

gbms29 (May 12, 2006 11:22:29 AM)
Hello Gary. Got a fun question for ya. Who do you think is faster Saine or Ginn

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:22:29 AM)
Hi gbms29...I was talking about this with a contingent of Glenville people (shocking isn't it) in Dayton last Saturday and we sort of came to the conclusion that Saine would beat Ginn in a track race, just as he beat Small, because he's so good out of the blocks. Saine is an exceptional track athlete at 6-0 205 pounds. He's ridiculous. But both Teddy and Small have such great football speed that it's also ridiculous. I'll take TGII over anybody on the gridiron. Small is right there with him.

marksgforce (May 12, 2006 11:25:50 AM)
What's the five year report card on JT's recruiting? Strengths? Weaknesses?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:25:50 AM)
Other than last year's disappointment with the offensive line candidates, I think JT has done an exceptional job on the recruiting front. In fact he's done much better than I even thought he would. Strengths for the most part are identifying talent and harvesting Ohio, weaknesses may be only on the O-line. And I wouldn't call that a weakness but I would say it could even be better going forward. Who wouldn't want to have JT in his living room? He's the epitome of class!

gbms29 (May 12, 2006 11:26:09 AM)
Do you think Saine will run track at OSU?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:26:09 AM)
He said he wants to but others have said that as well.

woody68 (May 12, 2006 11:29:57 AM)
How do you see Cincinnati St. Xavier vs Lakeland Florida matchup turning out? I know Lakeland has multiple division 1 prospects including two that have been offered by OSU .

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:29:57 AM)
I think that would be a great one woody68 and I think that's on Saturday so I plan on seeing that one. St. X just proved me wrong all season long last year ... good for them. And so much of their talent were just sophomores last year. Go Bombers. But Lakeland has some great talent. Bucknuts and JJ Huddle will be all over those games. Is this the best internet team of web sites around or what? Matt Natali and Kirk Larrabee are the two guys behind the scenes at JJ and Bucknuts, respectively, that make our sites rock!

gbms29 (May 12, 2006 11:31:24 AM)
How close do you think OSU is to offering Belton?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:31:24 AM)
Not very for some reason! Great kid! Like Belton told me, he's only played one year of varsity football to this point so teams might want to see more film on him this year.

marksgforce (May 12, 2006 11:32:11 AM)
Throw JT out of the equation ... who is the classiest coach in the Big 10? who is the worst?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:32:11 AM)
I would have to say Ferentz the best...Carr the worst!

hammbone1928 (May 12, 2006 11:35:55 AM)
Since OS has gained the rep. of being def. B. U.( that certainly helps with rec.). With Ohio being loaded this yr. & several top oos players being interested how many total DB's do you think they will take?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:35:55 AM)
A very minimum of two with Evege being one of them. I would guess they may take three in total. My guess is they know Torrence would accept an offer in a heartbeat but they might want to know where they stand with someone line Allen first before they go after Torrence. I don't think they could take any more than 3 at the very most that being corners. Safeties I would like to see them get Oliver and Clifford and call it a day. I think they like Arnold too but he can possibly play at wide receiver.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:38:10 AM)
Someone early asked about any players that did well at the Nike combine and I have to add Kyle Hubbard to that list. I think he had a great week when you consider he did well at the Browns combine on Tuesday and then he looked really great at the Nike camp on Friday. I would offer this kid as a wide receiver right now. If he grows into a TE than so be it, but he thinks and acts and catches like a wide receiver for certain. He's easily my Robby Parris at wide receiver for this year.

marksgforce (May 12, 2006 11:41:12 AM)
Recent board meltdown ... how do the insiders handle it? Pissed? Amused? Concerned? When a story goes crazy, do you all ever contact anyone at OSU as a "heads up" or do you assume they are monitoring fan mania?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:41:12 AM)
Marksgforce...I finally reached my melting point earlier today as the DJ thread continued on and on. I said what I had to say and thankfully Steve did shut it down soon after. It was amusing for a while but it took a turn for the worse about page 12 and enough was enough. I think Steve handles all the "heads up" issues with Bucknuts.

rbuck (May 12, 2006 11:43:37 AM)
Hi Gary, Did I miss something on Darrell Johnson, it seems like I saw that he signed somewhere, and not OSU. What can you tell me?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:43:37 AM)
Hi rbuck...I haven't heard anything new on DJ since before the chat got underway. If something happened can someone let me know. I heard a particular school that he might consider, I won't say it now, but I don't know if any new developements have just happened.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:46:11 AM)
I was at a track meet at Mooney yesterday for their conference championship and I know Matt Cavanaugh was there watching the meet. I do not know if he was there earlier in the day sniffing around or not but DJ was not at the track meet. A name that Duane might want to not is Mike Williams from Woodrow Wilson, my alma matter, he looks like a baby Clarett, and he's just a sophomore right now. He will eventually go to East when Y-town consolidates in two years for his senior season. He might be a player to watch out for.

gbms29 (May 12, 2006 11:47:37 AM)
Whats goin on with Boone?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:47:37 AM)
I'm sure Boone will be okay. He might pay a physical price for his transgression but I understand that he should be okay going forward.

marksgforce (May 12, 2006 11:49:10 AM)
We get after LLLLoyd a lot -- as do the Michigan fans as long as we don't bring it up! But top tier kids from all over the country continue to sign a NLOI to play football in Ann Arbor. Yes, they've got tradition, and yes, they have what young, dumb, naive kids believe to be "cool" helmets. But LLLLoyd has to play a part. What does he "have" that recruits like?

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:49:10 AM)
Michigan just recruits nationally because, for the most part, their state is void of top notch talent. I'll take Ohio kids with some Florida kids as my base anyway.

GaryHousteau (May 12, 2006 11:51:18 AM)
Guys we close to the 2-hour mark and the questions are still going strong but I have to call it a wrap for the day. It's been a fun and quick moving session and I want to thank everyone for taking part in the chat today. And as always, I want to thank those of you who read the chat at a later time. Have a great weekend. Thanks again! Go Bucks!
