Gary Housteau stopped by on Friday afternoon for a chat with premium subscribers. Gary discussed recruiting and Ohio high school football, as well as some talk about the Buckeye football team. We have a transcript below.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:16:12 AM)
Hello everyone...if you're still with me. I apologize there was a mixup with the chat instructions and I just got back from a photo shoot with Tyra Grant from Ursuline, Ohio High's Miss Basketball. So if you're still with me and want to chat...fire away.

Hey Gary, I was wondering if you might comment on the evolution of JT as a CREATIVE offensive coach. Seems like the only good thing that came out of breaking in the rookies on the 2004 defensive team is that it exposed the utter incompetence of our predictable offensive schemes. OSU was FORCED to open up the attack and take on more of a Northwestern look on offense. Finally, all of those four star athletes were allowed to shine with Troy's leadership and the melding of the O line. The Fiesta Bowl and the Spring Game seem to hint JT is expanding his repertoise withTG, borrowing plays he liked from past opponents, and more passes to the TE. Suddenly its the O that is one of the nations best.. Do you think this will continue into 2006? And if so what new schemes do you see? In 2007 and 2008 I guess it depends if Henton or Schoenhoft starts as to ratio of spread to "I" formations with chris Wells. But either way what Ive learned is that a multiple threat qb and a non predictable offense is much preferable to a

Does anyone know why Gary Danielson is not going to announce next year for ABC/ESPN?

manhattan buck (May 26, 2006 10:16:52 AM)
Dear Gary/kirk, I just sent out a long question for Gary. Is it to early to send questions or should I resend it when he arrives?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:16:52 AM)
Hi Manhattan...I just got on I apologize for the late start. Thanks for hanging with us today. What's on your mind?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:17:52 AM)
I got your question manhattan give me a second to go over it and get caught up. Smile!

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:22:52 AM)
JT always loved having a multiple threat quarterback at YSU and he has it now in Troy Smith at OSU. When there's doubt...run...control the clock...gain field position...end in a punt, FG or Extra point. Nothing has really changed. JT always preferred a ground attack over anything prolific in the air. I don't see it changing a lot. I actually think he'll go back to his roots of I formation with a fullback more this year. I personally think JT still needs to incorporate the TE into his offense as a receiving threat, something he's never done and he needs to use TGII more this season, a la Reggie Bush. This kid is the most underused talent with prodigous abilities in all facets of the game. And he's going to be gone this time next year. We're talking offense, defense, special teams...more TGII. It's his last year...what are we waiting for?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:24:40 AM)
If anyone has anything on your mind, now is the time to fire away. We need to gain some momentum here in the somewhat promptu chat.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:27:03 AM)
Anyone going to the Fitch Regional today? I tell all my friends that they should treat themselves and go see Glenville run track. This is their weakest team in the past four years and they're still going to rout everyone for their fourth consecutive title. Some of the girls at the Fitch regional, like Jessica Bearn and Aaeron Payne, my new favorite, are just dynamite. Do yourself a favor and go see the Fitch regional today if you're in the area.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 10:30:28 AM)
Gary, who from your area do you see getting an OSU offer?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:30:28 AM)
Who from my area from the seniors to be...well from my general area I'm thinking that Vincent Browne probably has the best chance of anyone. Danny Herron is a terrific back but I don't believe he'll get an offer. People talk about Marcus O'Hara from Hubbard but I don't see him getting an offer. Next year, the class of 2008, should be big in the Youngstown/Warren area.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 10:34:13 AM)
Gary, will you attend the Ohio state track meet?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:34:13 AM)
Hi Scribe...you betcha I'll be there. I'm starting to like track a lot. You get to see the athletes in a whole other light. I talk to guys like John McCalister and Terry Forbes, ahd they like to evalute football kids this way also. I've known McCalister for a long time and I respect him as much as anyone and he was at the track meet on Wednesday.

rbuck (May 26, 2006 10:36:39 AM)
Hi Gary, Do you see Brian Gamble getting an OSU offer?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:36:39 AM)
Hi rbuck...Brian Gamble is a play maker in my eyes. He didn't have a great game against X or even the first McKinley game but he played big against Iggy and Eds and that was pretty impressive. I would surely consider him if his grades are okay. Right now I tend to think no but reserve the right to change my mind on him because I really like him.

JimC (May 26, 2006 10:38:44 AM)
Hi Gary, Any news on the new Strength and conditioning coach?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:38:44 AM)
I've been making my phone calls but I'm not hearing anything concrete yet at all. From my perspective, Mike Cochran makes too much sense for JT to hire. He would be the overwhelming choice from my vantage point. Loyalty, Loyalty, Loyalty and mutual Loyalty are the main reasons. Mike Cochran would walk through a wall for JT. But that's just the way I see it.

Am I the only one who thinks that loosing Gary Danielson is a big deal?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:39:34 AM)
Hi Byars...yes! Smile. I hardly ever watch live games because I'm always at them and when I watch tapes I forward fast through much of them.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 10:42:32 AM)
Gary, what's going on with the TG prep school? And who does McCallister like for FB in Ohio? Thanks

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:42:32 AM)
He's working on the fine details. I've seen the blue prints and the photos from the architects and now he's in the fund raising mode. He's accepting corporate donations as well as individual contributions. I think it will take another year or so. One thing you can be certain, is that it's not going to be funded on the backs of his son or any of his former players. He's focusing on the corporate route. The plans are pretty ambitious I must say. We didn't talk about any fullbacks on Wednesday to be honest with you. We were just looking at some of the football players who were at the track meet.

Guest (May 26, 2006 10:45:51 AM)
Who are you seeing for 08 in the youngstown area?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:45:51 AM)
OSUfan27 asked about the the youngstown area kids in 2008 and I should be seeing a whole group of them today at the Fitch track meet today. For starters there's Brandon Beachum, Mike Zordich, Dan McCarthy and Taylor Hill among others from Cardinal Mooney, Justine Browne from Ursuline, Gary Thornton and Salvador Battles from The Rayen School, Mike Williams from Woodrow Wilson...and that's just all inner city Youngstown kids. The Youngstown area is strong in 2008.

mulder (May 26, 2006 10:48:20 AM)
There are beginning to be rumbling of interest in Nick Sukay. What do you know about this kid?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:48:20 AM)
Hi mulder...I say Sukay at the Scout.com combine in Pittsburgh this year and I wasn't crazy about him like some of the Scout guys are. Maybe I didn't see enough of him. I liked Clemons a lot more from a first impression. I just think a lot of these kids from out of state are pipe dreams, for the most part, unless they have a real connection to OSU. I don't really waste too much of my time learning about a kid who isn't very likely to become a Buckeye and that's the what I see in Sukay.

ohs (May 26, 2006 10:51:13 AM)
honestly, who would you rather have starting at QB for us in the fall, Smith or Quinn?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:51:13 AM)
Honestly, and here I go getting in trouble again, I would prefer Tom Brady Quinn. I like TS a lot as a person and after the Michigan game last year I respect him tremendously as a QB, I really do. But that's like asking me if I'd rather have a big fat T-bone or a filet mignon. What can I say. I'm sure JT couldn't be happier having TS at QB in his offense and I think TS is a better QB for JT's offense if that makes my answer any better.

JimC (May 26, 2006 10:53:53 AM)
Gary, What's going on with Evege. Are there off-field issues?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:53:53 AM)
Hi JimC...I don't believe there are any off-the-field issues but I've made a couple of attempts recently to find out what's going on with his recruitment and I haven't really found out anything new other than to say I hope he goes to camp and does well there.

ohs (May 26, 2006 10:55:53 AM)
i remain worried about our OL and DT recruiting.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 10:55:53 AM)
I hear ya ohs and concur! I think there's a lot of potential help on the DL out there but the OL situation scares me. To be honest with you, if Nick Schepis doesn't get an offer after OSU's camp is over, then I'm really worried about the OL situation. I'm not too worried about the DL part of the question.

osufan27 (May 26, 2006 11:00:51 AM)
How much does Kyle Jefferson have to raise his game to get an OSU offer? What other G'ville kids are gonna get OSU's attention in the next few years?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:00:51 AM)
Kyle needs to raise his game a lot. He's got a ton of God-given ability and I've seen a newer and improved version of him at some of the football combines I've seen him at, much more confident, but you need to make plays between the sidelines. As far as some of the others, there's Shawntel "Shaq" Rowell, Dawawn Whitner, Cordale Scott - like this kid a ton, Toriel Gibson, Shelton Lundy, Marcus Hall - freshman stud, Kevin Johnson... there's even more than that.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 11:03:25 AM)
Gary, in terms of JT's new contract, have you heard if he got $ for his assistants in lieu of even more for himself?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:03:25 AM)
I heard the assistants got more but I don't think that is in lieu of any him making more money. He recently hired a friend of mine, Doug Phillips from Salem High School, and he's sure happy with his new position. I firmly believe that JT and Gene Smith work very, very well together.

gary, any hoops players on the rise from the y'town area.......

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:05:23 AM)
Hi three finger Brown...that's a new name to these chats... hoops players from the y'town area is an oxymoron! With the lone exception of Terence Dials of course.

ohs (May 26, 2006 11:07:39 AM)
any news on Ray Small being eligible? Seems like Boone is fine?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:07:39 AM)
From what I'm hearing, Small should be fine and so should Boone. I'm still hearing some questions about Small from other people, but my people are telling me that he's going to be okay. I wouldn't necessarily bet my mortgage on it but I would maybe bet a Glenville T-shirt on it.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:09:54 AM)
And speaking of Glenville T-shirts...my buddy who is selling the Glenville T-shirts at www.jadgang.com just called me during my chat and told me that he has received orders from 11 different states since I first posted it at around 9 o'clock last night. He said it's crazy! And he moves a ton of merchandise as it is.

ohs (May 26, 2006 11:13:59 AM)
Who is the Buckeye who will come out of nowhere next fall to surprise people?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:14:00 AM)
I've been in love with Ross Homan the football player for quite some time and I'm certain they won't be able to keep him off the field this year. I think Anderson Russell has big-play ability. And I think it might be tough to keep Brian Hartline off the field also. Todd Denlinger looks like he's poised to contribute this year as well.

three finger brown (May 26, 2006 11:16:04 AM)
gary, you're the man, when will you be making an appearence on the BN radio show or roundtable

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:16:04 AM)
I'm not the one to ask about that but thanks for the compliment.

manhattan buck (May 26, 2006 11:19:27 AM)
If Homan developes as he has and D'andrea fails to regain his old luster what do think about moving Laurnaites inside and moving Grant and Homan in to fight for the outside spot?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:19:28 AM)
Manhattan...you're forgetting to mention John Kerr in this scenario. I've always liked the way Kerr plays the game and I'll be okay if he's the man inside but I really see Homan giving him a run for his money inside. To me, Mike is Homan's natural position because he's so physically strong. I won't be surprised is Homan is the starter somewhere as early as week two or three. I do think Laurinaitis could be moved inside but I think he'll be okay outside if he stays there. I'm sure Fickell will have the best three out there.

Byars (May 26, 2006 11:21:25 AM)
I recall big hits, Doss type hits, coming from Brandon Mitchell as a freshman and I keep waiting for his turn. What is keeping him from winning the job.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:21:25 AM)
It seems like he suits the nickel roll to a tee. He's just good to have back there as an insurance policy. I don't think he has as much ability as some of the other guys but he certainly has made football plays over the years.

manhattan buck (May 26, 2006 11:29:17 AM)
Gary, if OSU only lands two OLs, what do you think about next years lineman class in Ohio and oos ? Could we land four or five quality guys after they take a look at the depth chart?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:29:17 AM)
I don't know as much about next year's class of linemen as Duane probably does at this time but I like the Adams kid from Coffman and the Sanders kid from Northmont for starters. I'm certain next year's Oline class is going to be much better. Shaq is slated for the offensive line at Glenville for this year but after watching him move around on defense at the All-American combine, I'll be surprised if he's not moved to defensive tackle. He could be the top recruit in the state at defensive tackle if you ask me. Brandon Beachum is clearly the number one guy in the state right now. Absolute stud on both sides of the ball. And again I'll say that Jonny Adams from Buchtel is Mr. Excitement in the class of 2008. They all happen to be in the North but what can I say? You can go on www.scoutingohio.com and see young guys like Beachum and Adams up there now. Mark Porter will have the Glenville guys up there on his site soon.

rbuck (May 26, 2006 11:30:58 AM)
The name escapes me right now (LB from Glenville @ UC), but will he be playing LB for UC, and will we see a lot of him on September 16th?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:30:59 AM)
Freddie Lenix and Curtis Smith are both down there and I'm certain both are still trying to tread water academically down there. I wish them both the best. In a perfect world, they both would be at Ohio State because they're that talented. If they're eligible, we'll probably see them on the field at Ohio Stadium.

osufan27 (May 26, 2006 11:36:54 AM)
Any guys on the border who will get an offer at camp?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:36:55 AM)
I hope there's someone soon from Ohio to get an offer at camp or any other time. I personally think Jordan Mabin should get an offer because he's a football player, no question. Here's a kid that will rush for close to 3,000 yards this year and make plays on defense and special teams and lead his team to possible state title and people will be wondering why he'll be going to a school like Pitt or some other Big Ten School.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 11:39:48 AM)
Gary, any 2007 Pa kids likely headed for OSU?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:39:48 AM)
Blankenship seems to be one of the only real possibilities right now. I'm not real sure to be honest with you. I like Clemons from the Pittsburgh combine. I don't know the Pa crop very well to be honest with you. Lichtenfels knows that group pretty well.

scribeohio (May 26, 2006 11:46:08 AM)
Gary, where do you think that DJ lands?

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:46:08 AM)
I've heard too many of the DJ stories to be honest with you. I've heard that Lloyd Carr has recently been up the school, I've heard Iowa, I've heard Pitt from a good source. West Virginia used to be a name that we were hearing early on. I know this isn't popular, and I personally like DJ a whole lot and he knows that because I've told him many times, but I would earn my way into Ohio State at either a JC or a military school. I have an idea of how bad DJ had it before he was fortunate to become involved with his new family and be at Mooney, and I'd really like to see him make Ohio State take him. But at the same time I can't blame him for going with another school who wants to take him now. I certainly wish him and his family the best.

manhattan buck (May 26, 2006 11:46:56 AM)
There must be a reason (academics) they havent offered Clemons.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:46:56 AM)
I tend to agree with you manhattan...a lot of schools who haven't offered must have a reason as well.

GaryHousteau (May 26, 2006 11:49:50 AM)
I want to apologize again for the mixup at the start of the chat and I want to thank everyone for hanging in there with me. I appreciate your contributions to this chat and I want to thank everyone else who took the time to read the chat at a later time. I consider it an high honor and a privilege to chat with fellow Bucknuts on a somewhat regular basis. I'll probably miss my chat next week with the state track tournament so we'll do it again in a couple weeks I imagine. Thanks for all the questions and have a save and wonderful holiday weekend. Go Bucks!
