Housteau Chat Archive: June 8

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts subscriber chat this afternoon to discuss OSU football and recruiting. Among the topics covered were DT recruit Joseph Barksdale, the latest on Cleveland Glenville players, and much more.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 9:54:11 AM)
It's that time! The state track meet, OSU's first senior camp and the Ginn Bus Tour are all current events worth delving into. Bring it on!

JimC (Jun 8, 2006 9:57:21 AM)
Hi Gary, Is Barksdale going on the Ginn Bus Tour?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 9:57:21 AM)
Hi Jim C...I will make a phone call to see if I can confirm or deny that. Thanks for the question. I'm calling him right now.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:00:42 AM)
Hi I just called him and he says it's a negative! He's not a very happy camper right now and I think it has something to do with the Scout rankings not the Ginn bus tour.

kleintime16 (Jun 8, 2006 10:03:40 AM)
Hey Gary, seems to me that even stll after the first senior camp that OSU will most likely not take an instate O-Lineman (Schepsis) despite performing well in each of his outings for the OSU staff. Do you think that Schepsis will get that elusive scholarship offer?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:03:40 AM)
Hi Kleintime...I don't know what to think. I certainly wasn't blown away by the caliber overall of the offensive linemen at the first senior camp. Sure there were some decent prospects but nothing like last year. To be honest with you, Schepis was one of the few that looked the part for an interior lineman. He moved about as well as anyone and I spent a lot of time watching the offensive linemen while I was at the camp. I don't know if he will get an offer or not. Maybe they will wait until after the second camp to dole out the ships. I would think he's still a possibility.

kleintime16 (Jun 8, 2006 10:06:05 AM)
does he still feel good about OSU or is he simply upset at scout?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:06:05 AM)
Joe's really a good guy. One of the great things about Joe is that he's so media friendly and he mentioned to me a couple of Scout.com guys that have never even seen him or talk to him. And if you haven't spoken to Joseph Barksdale then you're blatantly not doing your job because he'll talk to everybody. One of the nicest kids out there. And he returns your call. Always! No he's not mad at OSU!

kleintime16 (Jun 8, 2006 10:07:08 AM)
Does Jermale Hines get an offer in the near future?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:07:08 AM)
Yes Jermale Hines eventually gets an offer...just not sure when. You can mark it down...Hines gets an offer. I would prefer he gets one after the tour bus stops at OSU on the 21st of June.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 10:09:17 AM)
so tell us some news about our potential FLA recruits, specifically the aquinas boys

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:09:18 AM)
Not my cup of tea usf sorry. I met an assistant from Aquinas down in San Antonio and we chatted briefly about Sam Young and his younger brother who will be a sophomore TE this year...he's going to be bigger than his brother. I don't have much news on Florida guys right now...sorry. I know the same names just as you do...but you would know more based on proximity alone.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 10:12:07 AM)
I know its early but OSU seems to be in on a lot of blue chip players but not necessarily the front runner on many. Am I too pessimistic?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:12:07 AM)
Hi labsbeabmm...haven't heard from you in a while it seems...No I don't think you're being pessimistic but rather more realistic. It will all start to shake out fine after OSU's second camp I'm sure. I think OSU needs to lock up the instate talent real soon here and stop waiting around. I like the first two commits but OSU needs to be adding to the list.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 10:15:10 AM)
how can DJ get into Michigan but not into OSU?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:15:11 AM)
Ohs asked about DJ getting into Michigan and not into OSU...well maybe Michigan had a chip to spare if they indeed would have been able to get him in. Who knows? But since he's at Iowa now...I wish him the very best...and it's time to move on. I've called him an inexperienced Mario Manningham with a huge upside potential. It's still an immense personal success story just to be in the position that he was after such a horrible academic start. Much credit to him and his family for that. Good luck DJ!

kleintime16 (Jun 8, 2006 10:18:47 AM)
I saw today that the Bucks have scheduled a "home" and home with Toledo, one in cleveland browns stadium (GO BROWNS!!!) in 2009, and one in columbus in 2011. I still recall, however, that the schedule is still slim in the 2007-08 years. Is Gene Smith and Tressell & Co. still trying to get the OSU V. YSU game?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:18:47 AM)
Klein...I'm still under the impression that they are much to the chagrin of many of you reading this. Face it folks, JT wouldn't be JT if he didn't schedule one game with YSU. Let me say this again....JT would not be the JT we all know and love if he would not schedule one game with YSU. It has to happen and it will happen!

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 10:22:28 AM)
is madsen worth taking for the bball team? seems like he didn't do a lot for vandy?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:22:29 AM)
I'm not much of a basketball man ohs but I'm becoming one. And I'm not much of a track man either but I'm becoming one. Taking those two things into consideration and mixing well...I certainly think Dante Jackson needs to be at Ohio State in some capacity. Be it in basketball, his best sport, or football his aspiring sport. This kid just blew me away doing an interview at the state meet. His depth of knowledge and love for OSU is so very obvious. I had no idea who Jimmy Hull was and this kid used him and Jimmy Jackson in the same sentence like it was common information. Get this kid on campus. As far as Madsen is concerned..with Koufos and Lauderdale in the fold...not much need for him. C'mon, the powers that be need to get Dante Jackson on campus.

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 10:25:16 AM)
will we offer kyle jefferson

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:25:16 AM)
I'm guessing no Ohs...but I am slowly and surely becoming more and more of a fan of this kid. He's still so much of an underachiever with all of his athleticism. But I think he officially was baptised at the state meet this past weekend. He was terrific. I've noticed an improvement on the gridiron in both San Antonio and at the Browns combine as well. Much more aggressive in nature and not as passive. I think he will impress a lot of people on this bus tour but I'm not sure if OSU will be impressed enough to offer. Consider yes...offer...maybe not!

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 10:26:33 AM)
any update on ray small? will he qualify?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:26:33 AM)
Word I'm hearing from people that know is yes Small will qualify.

NCBUCK (Jun 8, 2006 10:28:46 AM)
With respect to the Texas game, because of NIU's running attack, don't you think that will be a good game for our defense to start off the season with?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:28:46 AM)
Sure NCBUCK because Texas will have a young and inexperience QB and may want or need to rely on their ground game early in the year. We couldn't be playing Texas at a better time coming off a game against a very good running back at NIU. It should work out perfectly. Stop the run for sure in the first two weeks of the season.

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 10:33:15 AM)
i still remain concerned about our OL recruiting.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:33:15 AM)
Yes very concerned about the offensive line recruiting. For some reason it seems that they're putting a lot of faith in landing O'Dowd but I certainly don't count on getting an OOS guy like that unless they know they have him already. I believe, from what I've seen out there, that Schepis is worthy of an offer. He's every bit the player that Downing was at this level but the only difference is Downing was nasty, a good nasty, where Schepis has a more introverted demeanor to him.

buckgrad (Jun 8, 2006 10:35:33 AM)
How are we looking on the injury front? Everyone healed up (Pitt, D'Andrea etc..)

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:35:33 AM)
Hi buckgrad...I don't think D'Andrea will ever be 100 percent again at least it seems that way. I would love to see Mike play at 100 percent, with no pain and full mobility. He's a great kid. Shaun Lane is healthy, Chad Hoobler is healthy or getting there and from what I know...Pittman is healthy.

buckgrad (Jun 8, 2006 10:37:07 AM)
Hey there Gary, I am very late to the chat, but can you tell what is going on with Lenix? Will we be playing against him this Sept?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:37:07 AM)
I don't know yet if him or Curtis Smith, also from Glenville, have gained their eligibility yet for next season. It's possible OSU could be playing against both of them in September.

NCBUCK (Jun 8, 2006 10:37:46 AM)
Do you know if there are any schools from Ohio that the NCAA won't accept their transcripts?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:37:46 AM)
No idea NCBUCK ... sorry!

buckgrad (Jun 8, 2006 10:40:23 AM)
disregard this question if it has been asked, but in your opinion who is next to commit? Its been a quiet offseason

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:40:23 AM)
For the longest time I kept saying Evege, but frankly I don't know what to think about him any more. The next to commit? Wow...there's really not any obvious answer to that question. I'm sure we will have more names on the list soon after the second camp ends.

Chin Gigante (Jun 8, 2006 10:43:18 AM)
gary, do you think that kyle jefferson will get an offer. he is fast, athletic and tall but isnt very agressive and hasnt made the early impact at glenville that most of his predisessors have.........will his senior year tell the tale?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:43:18 AM)
Hi Chin... you hit the nail exactly on the head. I think he's got a ton of potential and he could even be a 6-4 cornerback, believe it or not. He just needs to step it up a notch between the sidelines in his senior year like he did in track this past spring. He's a good kid and he would love to go to 0-State as they say at Glenville. I think he would have to overwhelm the staff early in the season this year to get an offer. But he will test well at camp no question.

kleintime16 (Jun 8, 2006 10:48:22 AM)
With Barksdale off the tour bus, what big namers will be on it?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:48:23 AM)
Well I know for sure that Brandon Beachum is going and in my opionion, he's the biggest name out there in the class of 2008. Hines and Jefferson and about 15 other Glenville kids are going. The stops right now are Ball State, Cincinnati, Miami, BG, Iowa, ND, Illinois, Purdue, Indiana, Wisconsin, E. Michigan I think they just added, and OSU. And people wonder why Ginn sends 21 kids off to college! He works it like no other high school coach out there works it!

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 10:52:47 AM)
Sorry I'm late Gary but what is with the lack of offers for WR's in this class? Who are they looking at?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:52:47 AM)
Better late than never osufan27...obviously the staff is looking more oos for WRs than they are in state this year. I, for the zillionth time, think Kyle Hubbard is the best of the lot in state and should have an offer by now. I like Chris Givens. I like Dante Jackson, I think Clifford belongs on defense. OOS forget about Benn he's going to ND. I like Thompson from Florida and Washington from Michigan. I don't know what the staff is looking for. I hope somebody steps to the forefront soon at WR. I don't doubt JT has a plan at all, I just haven't figured it out yet.

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 10:53:34 AM)
It doesn't seem like we've made any DT offers in state or out other than barksdale, have we?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:53:34 AM)
I liked Jeremiah at the Nike camp but there doesn't seem to be much activity with him right now.

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 10:54:32 AM)
are both scout and rivals crazy not putting many ohio kids in top 100

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:54:32 AM)
Insane! The only word to describe it. I'm embarrassed quite frankly!

marksgforce (Jun 8, 2006 10:57:31 AM)
I believe Pittman is our feature back in 06. Agree? And just assuming I'm right, is there a clear #2 RB or will it be back-up by committee?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 10:57:31 AM)
I agree marksgforce...Pittman clearly number one and Chris Wells is clearly number two...who will be so good that he will make people want to see more of him by midseason. And make no mistake about it, C. Wells has a ton of respect for Pittman and the feeling is mutual, but he's going for as much playing time as possible. Wells is an elite running back. Not just good...but elite!

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 11:00:10 AM)
Is Salvador Battles the top RB next year or will Ashley from St. X give him a run?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:00:10 AM)
Salvador Battles won't even play running back next year. He's a QB who wants to play QB. Ashley is already proven. Ashley made a believe out of me last year. And he looked great physically at the state track meet. But the top running back in the junior class, is easily Brandon Beachum. He too, like Chris Wells was, will be better than Maurice Clarett.

hammbone1928 (Jun 8, 2006 11:01:23 AM)
What's the story on Clifford, has this been discussed

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:01:23 AM)
Nothing official but I'm hearing that OSU is looking good with Clifford and Barksdale right now and not so good with Martin. And I've checked numerous sources on all three of these guys and that seems to be the concensus.

boulder (Jun 8, 2006 11:02:35 AM)
where does that leave mo wells?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:02:35 AM)
Battling hard with E-Haw for any playing time they can possibly get. M. Wells needs to get some slot action and return kicks... anything he can do to contribute.

marksgforce (Jun 8, 2006 11:05:06 AM)
Ginn, Gonzo, and it's mid-season with no injuries ... who is #3? #4? and #5?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:05:06 AM)
I want to believe Hall is right there in the top three, then Hartline and Robiskie. And who knows what D. Lyons status will be or if he is on offense or not. And Dukes is hanging around. I think Hartline could really turn heads this year. He's terrific if you ask me. I don't see Small having a major impact this year so I would redshirt him.

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 11:06:17 AM)
How good are the kids from Glenville in the 08 class

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:06:17 AM)
Great class! Absolutely great! Could easily get three kids from that class minimum. Is that amazing or what?

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 11:08:28 AM)
I heard we may be in good shape with John Clay, Robert Hughes and now Danny Herron..What have you heard? I'm partial to Ohio kids but I'd take John Clay any day.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:08:28 AM)
My peeps have told me that Clay is all but locked up with Wisconsin. Herron would love to go to OSU but I don't beleive they will offer. Hughes looked good at the Nike camp but I really haven't spoken with anyone about him recently. Herron will end up somewhere in the Big Ten but he needs to add a little more muscle tone! LOL! That kid is cut from a block of granite.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 11:11:21 AM)
Hey Gary, GO BUCKS!!! My question is given a healthy Antonio Pittmann, realistically how many carries per game can we expect for Beanie Wells?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:11:21 AM)
Hopefully a lot tonybony. I think JT is going to go back to the old Smashmouth days of YSU more than OSU fans might want him to. The formula is there with the young defense. Wells will get his chances no question. He's that good people! Pittman is the man but Beanie can play.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 11:15:32 AM)
Do you see C. Wells having a 1,000 yd season? Also, who do you think will be starting in the secondary?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:15:33 AM)
Curtdogg call me crazy but I see Pittman and Wells both having 1,000 yard seasons. The secondary I would like to see is Jenkins and Ginn at the corners and O'Neal and Russell at the safeties. That being said...since we will have to wait till Ginn is in the NFL to see him at corner, I would like to think that Amos would be ready to step up because he has at least more experience than Coleman has. I just saw Brandon Underwood at OSU last Saturday and looked to be in good shape. He's got good size. And I also like Nick Patterson at safety.

tonybony (Jun 8, 2006 11:17:38 AM)
Hey Gary, do you feel that Ted Ginn Jr. finally becomes the consistent superstar receiver we have been waiting for to develop in the 06-07 season?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:17:38 AM)
OSU will run the ball more than everybody will want this year with a young defense so despite all of the heavy artillery on offense, the ground game will be front and center. I'm not sure that Ginn will ever become your classic wideout but he's a playmaker!

marksgforce (Jun 8, 2006 11:19:50 AM)
Will Rehring start at right tackle for his senior year after Barton has left? (He and Boone at probably 330 each by then, would be scary looking bookends.)

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:19:50 AM)
Scary is right. What's even more scary is that Rehring could play left guard next to Boone for a couple of years. I potentially see Jon Skinner giving right tackle a run for it after Barton is gone. I think Barton could potentially leave a year early if he has a good season. It's certainly possible.

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 11:24:25 AM)
What is the hold up with guys like Antonio Jeramiah, Andrew Dailey, Kyle Hubbard, Jermale Hines, CJ Peak, David Arnold, Chris Givens, Solomon Thomas and Devon Torrence..Why haven't they offered any of these guys? It's making me nervous the lack of ohio offers.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:24:25 AM)
There's a lot there osufan...I like everyone on that list and I have no idea why any of these guys don't have an offer. Some might say grades in somes instances...I certainly know that's not the case across the board. Again, I'm the only one who keeps saying that Jordan Mabin deserves serious consideration. See I don't have a problem standing up for guys when I know they can play football. Whether OSU wants these guys that can play the game or not is another question. But to me, the good ones just really standout when you see them play. They're just better than everyone around them and it's really easy to tell when you're watching one of those guys play. I like Brian Gamble too. Hines needs an offer yesterday!

hammbone1928 (Jun 8, 2006 11:25:32 AM)
I just got in. What's the latest on Evege?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:25:32 AM)
Nothing really new to report with Evege from my end. I hope he's going to camp on the 23rd.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:28:45 AM)
I just spoke with Nate Oliver and he tells me that Frank Edmonds and Diauntae Morrow are going on the bus tour with Coach Ginn tomorrow. Neither he nor Kyle Hubbard is going.

boulder (Jun 8, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
Claytor, do we land him and does he break the mold of the lighter, faster O-linemen?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:30:29 AM)
I got really good vibes from talking with Claytor and his dad at OSU's camp on Saturday. If I had to guess, I would say yes. He could be the next to commit if you needed an answer from me and you put a gun to my head. But that's just pure speculation on my part. Let me say that again...that's just pure speculation.

Guest (Jun 8, 2006 11:34:49 AM)
Was Tressel more open with the media in a much smaller fishbowl like YSU -- or has always had a "national security" approach to information?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:34:50 AM)
What you see is what you get with JT. There is no public pretense with this terrific man. He is who he is in the public eye. He's as consistent as the a mid June day is long. I like the term "national security" that you've chosen. JT is always going to say what he wants to be said and no more. And his players love him. They loved him at YSU and they love him at OSU.

osufan27 (Jun 8, 2006 11:35:31 AM)
One more question gary. Do you think we have a shot with Deonte Thompson, Art Evans and Aaron Johnson? Any other Florida guys on the radar?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:35:31 AM)
Without dodging your question...I would have to say I really don't know! Smile!

ohs (Jun 8, 2006 11:36:28 AM)
is anyone transfering, like RB's etc from OSU?

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:36:28 AM)
Not that I'm aware of right now. They all want to ride on this train next season.

GaryHousteau (Jun 8, 2006 11:44:41 AM)
And with that last question...I'm going to call it a session. There's still a few questions in the queue and I apologize for not getting to them all. I still have more stories from camp and from the state track meet coming. You can also check out JJHuddle.com for stories and pictures. I want to thank all of you for taking the time to chat with me this afternoon. It's always a privilege and a pleasure to conduct this chat on a regular basis with fellow bucknuts and I hope it's worth your time if you participate or just read it at a later time. Thank you all and go Bucks! I'll be in Hershey next week for the Big 33 game so I'm not sure if I'll be chatting next week or not. Steve will have the North/South game covered. Is this the best site going or what. I feel bad for the Ohio State fans who subscribe to other OSU sites. Smile! Have a great weekend!
