Hey Steve, good to hear from you again ... how about the Evege commitment, seems like he was waiting for the right time and now was just the right time.
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 11:54:09 AM)
Yes, that was good to see. I don't know why this week was a better time than any other. I had heard he would be coming to Ohio State's camp and probably deciding then. But he got it out of the way early. They have 3 commits and all 3 are skill position players. Time to get to work on OL and DL, I would say.

Pat Lazear... what do you know about the situation? Any opinions?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 11:55:16 AM)
Only what I have read. I have no way of knowing if the OSU staff is or was aware of the situation before they offered him or invited him to visit this summer. My guess is they will hold tight and see what develops with the courts before pushing forward ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 11:56:10 AM)
The last story on the court hearing this week seemed to suggest there was "more to the story" that may or may not exonerate Lazear. I guess wait and see on that one.

Steve, what are our chances of landing Barksdale and Allen from michigan, and possibly Thompson from Belle Glades
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 11:57:16 AM)
I think they have a good shot at Barksdale, probably better than either of the other two. He has a good list of offers, Gholston is at OSU and they need some DTs. ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 11:58:11 AM)
Allen also has Gant at OSU, but he has a great list of schools. Important thing will be getting these guys to make official visits. I have no good feeling about OSU signing Thompson. He probably will be hard to get out of Florida.
aaron (Jun 15, 2006 11:58:31 AM)
is ray small in?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:00:35 PM)
There is no way to know that this quickly. I mean, the results come back pretty quickly but probably not 4 days quickly. I imagine he will know any day ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:01:26 PM)
He says he is enrolling at OSU on Monday. I take that to mean he can take part-time classes (up to 11 hours) and probably be OK, regardless of what his situation is. It is confusing, I admit.
hammbone1928 (Jun 15, 2006 12:01:37 PM)
DT besides Barksdale,Do you think they will offer Jeremiah? 3 allelged offers-Brent-J.Jackson-D. Morgan which one of the 3 do you think we can get?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:02:45 PM)
After Barksdale, I think they will eventually get around to taking Jeremiah. The others are probably dependent on getting them on campus for official visits. There is a pronounced need at DT, no question. I know if they offer a hometown kid like Jeremiah, I doubt he gets away.
bburks4144 (Jun 15, 2006 12:02:55 PM)
Joe Haden is someone I feel has fallen under the radar, he has OSU in his Top 4 or 5, and seems like a freak of nature (4.3 speed, 40 reps of 185). Does OSU have a realistic chance?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:03:51 PM)
They seem to be working hard in Md. and DC, so I would not rule anything out. If Maryland is asleep there, there is no reason why OSU can't go in and get a kid or 2 a year there. Haden would be a great versatile get. This staff seems to have no problem luring the athletes, that is for sure.
tipp'sbucks (Jun 15, 2006 12:03:56 PM)
Poor Michigan... A 3:30 start! Gives us more time to prepare ourselves. What do you think of the time change?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:04:53 PM)
Wow, what a mess. I've talked to a lot of people about it and, strategically, everybody thinks it helps OSU. I mean, by Nov. 18, sundown will be 5:30 p.m. or so. You're talking about playing the second half in the dark. That makes it a night game. ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:06:27 PM)
OSU's worst fears could come to fruition if fans get out of control after the game. You hope that doesn't happen. But the atmosphere should be even more electric -- not that The Game needs a jump start or anything. Lloyd Carr has to wonder who he upset to draw a short stick like this. This almost assures that the new start time for this game will be 3:30 every year. That is too bad ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:07:25 PM)
Most people have enjoyed that game being an early start at noon. Makes for a long day waiting for it to start. The noon start allows people to enjoy the game and then have the rest of the day from 4 p.m. on for other things. Now it is an all day event.
kleintime16 (Jun 15, 2006 12:07:31 PM)
I think I am probably one of the many that feel that you can never recruit too many O-linemen. That being said, looking at JT's O-line recruiting during his tenure, it seems that they usually get one about this time - Rehring (6-27-03), Skinner (7-1-03) - Cordle (4-6-04 - Smith (7-31-05) - seems about the time to real one of the big guys in. Who do you think will be the first O-liner to pull the trigger?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:11:44 PM)
I agree, I think it is time to nail down an OL. I think they need three in this class. At the same time, I'm not sure when Bollman will be back and where he stands in this process (i.e. evaluation and making offers). Have to think if Tressel sees somebody he wants he will pull the trigger himself, with consultation with Bollman. But the time is coming, I think, to start working on the lines.
Poz79 (Jun 15, 2006 12:12:15 PM)
Steve, thanks for the chat. Has Bucknuts tried to contact Anthony Davis from NJ?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:13:16 PM)
We will be contacting him in the next few weeks. Allen Wallace just did an update with him yesterday and he said Miami leads OSU, USC and others. It helps that he knows Malcolm Jenkins. He needs to go to work on Davis to get him out for a visit. That will be the key.
hammbone1928 (Jun 15, 2006 12:13:54 PM)
What can you tell us about WR A. Henry from FL. & has he been offered?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:14:19 PM)
Aaron Henry is listed in Scout as a CB. He has been offered by OSU. We're working on an update with him ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:15:13 PM)
He grew up an FSU fan. Most see him at Miami. OSU has a shot. though. One of six or eight top schools on his list.
aaron (Jun 15, 2006 12:15:24 PM)
Steve, with all the lb's and Db's we have and all the athletes coming in with this recruiting class, our special teams should be unbelieveable! your thoughts? Ray Small and TGll returning kicks?!
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:16:50 PM)
I agree. Anthony Gonzalez and Malcolm Jenkins will probably open up back there with Ted with Small mixing in later on. They should do well once again on coverage teams. I didn't know this until I read up but opponents averaged 5.2 yards per punt return against OSU last year. That is incredible. Everybody's goal is 10 yards. OSU put a stop to that and I thought Trapasso had a pretty good year.
DantheMan (Jun 15, 2006 12:17:03 PM)
Have you heard anything about Oden's ligament injury? Will he be OK by Fall? Surgery?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:18:37 PM)
It has lingered this long. Surgery at this point would result in a 2-month recovery period. They seem to be hoping that rest will do the trick. May take him out of the team USA stuff in July. Everybody is cautiously optimistic right now. Just keep your fingers crossed. He should be at OSU next week to enroll for at least the first summer segment.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:18:52 PM)
North-South??? Hmmm. ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:20:33 PM)
South has 12 BCS signees and North has like six. South has Nate Davis, who I really like. He could be the MVP if he tosses 3 TDs, maybe. I'll take the South at half a glance.

how good is Donnie E?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:21:45 PM)
Well, I don't know. Duane has him No. 19 in Ohio, I believe. He has the blistering 40 time and some versatility. Tape on him has been nonexistent. I'd like to see that before I pass some all-knowing judgment.
ohs (Jun 15, 2006 12:21:53 PM)
It seems like OSU could have at least half the 07 class made up by OOS recruits?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:22:17 PM)
That does seem possible. Maybe 18 signees, nine in and nine out. Something like that.

do you think roy hall is ready to step up or do you think robiskie, dukes, or hartline are going to take that 3rd spot?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:23:25 PM)
Light went on for Roy in the spring. He came on pretty strong with the spring game showing, etc. Robiskie is definitely next with Hartline and then Dukes also in the discussion. If Roy can't get it done, they won't hesitate one bit to throw Robiskie in there. Hartline could get 20 catches at garbage time.

DE have theyoffered D. Still from Del? & what can you tell us about him?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:27:37 PM)
The Hot News says Still visited and was offered earlier this week. He is not rated, but has some great offers like Miami, Michigan, Georgia and Tennessee. He sounds like an intriguing prospect at 6-5, 250 from Delaware. But that is not an area that produces a lot of great players, so we'll see. I can't sit here and say OSU has the inside track because the Hot News looks like he is traveling the countryside.
Poz79 (Jun 15, 2006 12:27:46 PM)
Thoughts on the all star games this weekend? Do you enjoy them? All star games of any sport never hold my interest long, and I spend more time worrying about serious injuries in what's really just a glorified scrimmage.
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:29:15 PM)
Good point, and the conditions this weekend could be extreme with gametime temps in the high 80s. So cramping could be an issue. Luckily, the N-S and Big 33 have largely been devoid of bad injuries. I enjoy these games. The rules keep them competitive until the end. It was fun last year watching Boone and Sutton carving up the South in the N-S. Ohio has taken command of the Big 33 rivalry, but sending the third team this year will likely change that.
bburks4144 (Jun 15, 2006 12:29:35 PM)
Who, if anyone, do you see OSU getting from Glenville this year? I would hate to see them pass on Jermale Hines, and have Hines go to UM. Kyle Jefferson? Anyone else?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:30:16 PM)
Hines may be it, and he is not a definite. He does have those southern ties and could go down there if OSU doesn't make a move. Gary loves him as an athlete that you take and plug in later. Duane also has him in the top 10, I believe.
ohs (Jun 15, 2006 12:30:20 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:31:32 PM)
For latecomers, I have no intelligence one way or the other. Gary is in PA with the Big 33 and if he finds out by Sat., maybe he'll be able to share that. He says he is enrolling one way or the other on Monday. Perhaps that is conditional (i.e., part-time status) until he is nailed down. I dunno.

which is our scariest game? texas or iowa?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:38:01 PM)
Texas has a better team 1 to 22, but Iowa means 10 times more (in terms of the Big Ten and a path to a BCS bowl). If they sweep those 2 games, they should play for the national championship, one would think. But that will be such a tall order. Iowa, in particular, comes a week after the PSU game and it's at night at Iowa City. Find it hard to believe a RS freshman QB will beat Ohio State in his second career start. Stop the run and OSU should be fine there. Does that make Iowa, with a senior QB scarier? Yes, I think it does.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:45:07 PM)
No new names to report. Not sure where things stand with Bollman on the shelf. The offer to the player from Delaware, Devon Still, is intriguing because he could potentially be an OL or DL. But I see no movement toward an imminent verbal, if that's what you're asking.
DaytonBuckeye (Jun 15, 2006 12:45:17 PM)
Steve - Good Afternoon. Could you please give us an update on D'Andrea and how his knee is coming along? Also, how do you see the linebackers playing out? Who is going to start off the bat, along with how you feel Kerr and Grant are going to hold up through the season. THANK YOU!
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:47:13 PM)
I have no update on D'Andrea. The hope is by resting it, it will heal and allow him to play at least some this fall. They will be babying him (and that's not a good word) but taking care of that situation and monitoring it closely because the payoff could be real big for them and him. I think the starters initially will be Laurinaitis and Freeman (2 of the top students on the team, I understand) outside with Kerr inside. But Homan may push his way in there. Not sure if he or Laurinaitis would be inside. But Laurinaitis is now close to 240 or so, so he could handle it. ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:47:41 PM)
Grant's initial impact could be on special teams. Curtis Terry is also in this discussion as a speed rusher at OLB. He has some athletic ability now.

i bet we get martin (cuz ND has too many DE's) and lose Clifford to UM. what do you think.
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:49:13 PM)
I guess that is possible. OSU needs some safeties (hard to believe, but it's true). My count was something like 9 corners and 5 safeties. Oliver may make 6. But they could use Clifford. Martin would be a huge get to beat back the ND influence in Ohio again (a la Lawrence Wilson).
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:49:49 PM)
I am excited to go down to Cinti. the opening weekend and see the likes of Clifford, Martin, Evege and Ashley in action.

Do you think Gibson redshirts this yr or will he play special teams?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:50:31 PM)
They don't need him necessarily to play on defense. An RS year may help him get up in the 220-230 range. Let's see how he looks on Sat.
ohs (Jun 15, 2006 12:51:01 PM)

Hamiltucky, I love that. Hatcher is 6-4, 275 and has a few offers like Cincinnati, Duke, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota and Vanderbilt. He is legit. Maybe if he comes to camp and shows well, he'd get a look as a DL.

Hi Steve - Any OL strong possibilities on the horizon ? The kid from Toledo/FL (?) would be nice but it seems like we are really banking on OOS linemen ! Would you trade Schwartz for Bill Nagy right now ? We seem to have such a glut of DB/WR/LB/DE/QB's !!
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:56:29 PM)
They have whiffed on one OL the last 2 years (Bemoll and then a number of guys last year). They seem to want more than they get signed. I think people would feel better if they had that one cornerstone guy like Nick Claytor and then built from there ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:56:51 PM)

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:58:19 PM)
Great question. He is only 6-1. You have to be a special one to play in that league under 6-2, probably. But if he plays like he did last year against Michigan and ND, he could probably make a roster of most if not all NFL teams. He needs a great senior year to be a first day pick, probably.
Hicks74 (Jun 15, 2006 12:58:27 PM)
Steve - DT worries me too as far as numbers. Would this push Larimore in a bit just to get his feet wet or has Garnier shown anything that you may have heard ?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 12:59:19 PM)
I think their confidence in Garnier is growing. Larimore will get a heavy look. Great to see Denlinger come along. Good news is they have the three seniors to rely on with Penton, Patterson and Pitcock -- the three P's. Time for Nader Abdallah to deliver.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 1:07:33 PM)
Cotton is not listed on any OSU literature I have seen, and that is usually a telltale sign. Looks like one of the excess ends or maybe even Rose will move down. Let's see how the bodies develop and then they will make that call.

SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 1:09:03 PM)
If Smith goes down and there are still meaningful downs to be played in this season, I have to think it would be Zwick. Why wouldn't it be? He has 15 or so games of experience. The others are still rank amateurs. Zwick is the clear No. 2 in my book.

That's tough to say if they moved too quickly. But Bob is the PA expert and his rankings speak for themselves.
npbuck (Jun 15, 2006 1:09:53 PM)
Steve does Schepis really want to be a buckeye no matter what happens, or are the buckeyes going to find themselves in the same situation they did with the Thomas kid that went to pitt last year. (We waited too long to offer)
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 1:11:03 PM)
It is still way early. Schepis has some security with Cincinnati, Duke, Wake and WVU. Those are good offers. He should not find himself in a rush to judgment here. Maybe OSU wants to see his first 2-3 games.

Man, that is tough. I am listed 6-2 in the program (ha ha). But I'm probably 6-1. Troy and I are about eye to eye. He is at least 6-0. I'll try and take notice of that next time I get the chance.

is UM really going to be as bad as the radio guys said they'll be?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 1:14:58 PM)
No, by his own admission he was sandbagging us and them. The problem they have is the three road games -- ND, PSU and OSU. They need to win 2 of them to have a shot at a BCS game and/or Big Ten title. If they play like they did last year, they'll go 0-3. UM is at a crossroads, for sure. They need to find the pride they've had for the last 40 years. They did not have it last year. OSU has been through stretches (1987-91, 1999) where they lacked that pride as well. The key is keeping that stretch to one year. Good news is they have a veteran QB and a veteran RB who know how to win and some gamebreaking WRs. The new defensive staff will mold a better defense. Shake well and they have a chance. They are dangerous when backed against the wall ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 15, 2006 1:16:50 PM)
But problem is is Carr just playing out the string? Players sense that and they slack off if the HC does not have a tight rein. Tom thinks Carr finishes his current contract and is done. This uncertainty also has to hurt their recruiting. They need to manage it -- if this is what they're doing -- and announce 2007 will be his last year and appoint his successor after this season so recruiting and the transition is seamless. The longer they let this fester without an announcement or an extension for Carr, the worse it will be.

DaytonBuckeye (Jun 15, 2006 1:20:44 PM)
Steve, in your opinion, with only a few guys returning on D how do you see our defense playing out for the first few games. I think its great we take on NIllinos first with Garrett Wolfe which will get us ready for Texas. Do you see us putting 9 guys in the box against Texas in order to stop the run? The only problem is the fact it leaves Jenkins and the other CB out on an Island against some great receivers. Though, we don't know if McCoy will be able to take the pressure of a Saturday night National Audience football game. A lot of pressure for RS QB

The schedule is good, I agree. The NIU game should prepare them nicely. I doubt they commit 9 men to the rush against Texas, as everybody suggests. Those Texas receivers, Pittman and Sweed, are pretty good. Good news is no Vince Young and no TE Thomas either. Those guys killed OSU. Buckeyes will get after the young QB. If they can force, say, 3 turnovers (2 INTs and one fumble), it's Ohio State's night. If he is special and careers them in his second start, look out.

Is there any word on whether or not MDA will be able to contribute in 2006? Or, is that something they won't know until they start practicing again in August? I'd love to see a storybook ending, but....

They will hold out hope through fall camp. My guess is even then they won't be foolish and push him until the knee shows it will not go out on him. Tressel wants him to be able to go off with a blaze of glory. He could really help them if he's healthy.
