I was not able to see the north/south game or the big 33 game....how did our recruits look? all i keep hearing about is Rose!
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 9:53:38 AM)
Browning was an absolute stud....he dominated the line of scrimmage...clearly the best offensive linemen in the game(for either side) ---- Gibson("The Predator") is scary good...relentless off the edge...he will be a special player at tOSU---Small played hurt and wasn't much that much of a factor....
JimC (Jun 19, 2006 9:53:55 AM)
Hi Nevada, How do you see our OL filling out this year?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 9:55:40 AM)
I think you are going to see a lot of the "Jumbo Package" with Barton, Rehring, Datish, Downing and Boone out there paving the way...Skinner made a big move over the spring and is going to be in the mix....Cordle is right there as well.......deep, nasty and as talented a group as we have had in a long while
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 9:55:51 AM)
i read somewhere on notre dame's website that they think that OSU will be tough to beat for Barksdale....is this true? what have you heard?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 9:56:57 AM)
OSU would have to be "odds on" to land Barksdale(Gholston is "pimping us" big time to his good friend Joseph). I really would be shocked if he ended up somewhere else.
Mike68 (Jun 19, 2006 9:57:04 AM)
Can you give us a breakdown for the # of recruits that the staff is looking to take by position (based upon your previous estimation of 18 schollies)
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:01:49 AM)
QB(0) , RB(2), FB(1) OL (3), TE(1), WR(3), DE(2), DT(3), DB(3)...this would be my 18 breakdown
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:01:55 AM)
how are we with Clifford and Martin?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:03:27 AM)
I think the longer the Martin recruitment goes on, the better the chances are that we get him. It is still a tossup 50-50 with us and ND.......I believe(and have for some time) that Clifford==Buckeye
cowboybucki (Jun 19, 2006 10:03:34 AM)
Drderm post...I have always enjoyed Nevadabuck's chat transcripts and his insight. Does he also have similar background info on hoops? If you are at the chat today could you ask him about Mayo, Tyus and Turner for our last 2 spots in 07 as I will be unable to attend. thanks!
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:05:21 AM)
my hoops info is pretty solid...but not as good as my football scoop...lol......I will believe the "Mayo rumors" when I see him show up at tOSU.....Matta pretty much has his "pick" of who he wants at this point.....
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:05:33 AM)
who is next to commit?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:06:30 AM)
should see some activity this weekend....I would go with Blankenship(if his "weight situation is under control)
SteveHelwagen (Jun 19, 2006 10:06:50 AM)
Interesting, we have a question on Blankenship as well ...
Poz79 (Jun 19, 2006 10:06:54 AM)
I saw Evan Blankenship is bringing his mom to the camp this weekend and, he says this is his final trip before announcing his decision, think he's the next verbal?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:07:59 AM)
yes I do.....but if he looks "sloppy" this weekend up close and personal--you may see OSU "pull back" a bit....if he looks like it is under control, they will go in for the "close"....
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:08:08 AM)
How serious is Oden's wrist?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:08:56 AM)
anytime you undergo surgery it is a serious matter...but no one that I've talked to is overly concerned.....
smallisin (Jun 19, 2006 10:09:31 AM)
Do you see a really special class coming in this fall? It looks to me like these kids could far exceed our own high expectations. Do you feel this same way and do you think we could get more than one tree planted out of this class? (talking about the 06 class)
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:11:20 AM)
I've stated for a long time that I thought this was a special group....I stated last Decemeber(when some were lining up on the ledges..LOL) that it would be "Top 5"----with all of the guys past admissions I feel stronger about that fact than ever.....we will have more than a few All Americans in this group........
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:11:35 AM)
I remain really interested in the OSU scholarship situation. We have only 12 for next year but 26 for 09. That seems a really important stat for OSU in future. Will we hold some scholies and bank them for next year?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:14:34 AM)
ohs...not sure what depth chart you are looking at(and I say that totally "lovingly"...LOL) JT LOVES having "balance" in his classes, and with "red shirts" and attrition, I look for 18-19(maybe as high as 20) schollies this year, and probably 21-23 the next.....we have nice balance right now....
buckicrazy (Jun 19, 2006 10:16:16 AM)
NB, thanks for the chat. I was woundering why tOSU has a hard time bringing in OOS recruits? We have the tradition, facilities, and staff to make a run at a NC every year.
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:19:08 AM)
I think it really comes down to the "type" of players that OSU goes after.....they want the players that "really really" want to be Buckeyes(and those tend to be in-state kids that grew up following the team).....you will always look nationally for the "best kids"--but JT absolutely has a profile of the type of kids he is looking for---and given the finite amount of time that you have for recruiting, he feels like our odds are much better in state. Ohio will always make up the lion' s share of our players
smallisin (Jun 19, 2006 10:19:28 AM)
With all these talented LB's who do you think redshirts? and do you see the defense shifting its format to get more of them on the field in the coming seasons?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:21:42 AM)
Grant and Homan are playing. I would be shocked if Gibson doesn't play as well. I would look for Moeller and Johnson to redshirt.. I don't see a change in defensive philosophy....I just see a lot of great players rotating in and out.
buckicrazy (Jun 19, 2006 10:21:56 AM)
With the talent and depth at DE does tOSU move one to DT to provide depth. If so who?
redondo (Jun 19, 2006 10:22:36 AM)
Nevada - following up on Buckicrazy's question, on those OOS recruits that JT has identified and is pursuing, what should he be doing diferently to "close the deal". Obviously, they fit the profile or he wouldn't be pursuing them. Thank you.
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:23:15 AM)
Worthington or Barrow could certainly slide down....they are the most likely to change positions.....
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:24:45 AM)
redondo....I would not change a thing about JT's approach to recruiting. It is careful, methodical, and you end up with a great class in the final analysis. The proof is on the field---where the results speak for themselves.
Mike68 (Jun 19, 2006 10:23:21 AM)
How serious are we recruiting Donovan Warren?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:27:00 AM)
Long Beach Poly always has a ton of talent---and even though Ken-yon Rambo didn't work out(he was the BEST high school receiver that I have ever personally seen).....I think if Warren shows a "serious" interest in OSU that our recruitiment of him will heat up---
smallisin (Jun 19, 2006 10:27:12 AM)
Is it still your feeling that tOSU doesnt take a QB this year? If they had to take one do you think Smith gets the call?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:28:24 AM)
I do not believe that the current thinking is that a QB gets offered this year.....someone would have to go "lights out" in the summer camp to earn an offer.....
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 10:28:33 AM)
Whats the deal with Larry Grant? is he just learning the playbook paying his dues? I know we are deep at linebacker but i have heard from a lot of people close to the team about his athleticism. But there doesnt seem to be much talk aobut him possibly taking one of the positions.
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:30:06 AM)
Grant will start the season in the two-deep.....whether he moves up or down will be predicated on his game "production".....he is an ultra-talented young man, that is having to learn the system on the fly.....that is why it is so tough to recruit JUCO's....as they have to be ready to play....Grant certainly "looks" the part....
Mike68 (Jun 19, 2006 10:30:31 AM)
Since you listed one FB in your breakdown, can you give us any names of possible candidates for this position? Hynoski seems to have serious interest in tOSU.
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:32:39 AM)
Hynoski could certainly be the guy. But we may wait and see who pops up(like Aram)...FB's are a special breed----but I think Hynoski might very well get the nod...
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 10:32:52 AM)
I think that the coaching staff is going to have a hard time redshirting a lot of these freshman....your thoughts? Seems to be a good problem to have!
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:34:55 AM)
they are certainly coming in eager to contribute....I like red-shirting players as it gives them a chance to acclimate socially and academically(as well as mature physically)..I believe when all is said and done, that the majority of these incoming freshman will redshirt--as there are a plethora of talented guys ahead of them(remember we are Preseason #1)
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:35:10 AM)
any news on Small? is he in? and will Gibson red shirt?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:36:25 AM)
Small is "in".....I would be shocked if Gibson redshirted--he is a special talent(as anyone who watched the Big 33 can attest)...
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 10:36:43 AM)
I read somewhere that Saine has the best receiving hands of any of the backs in his class....it would be nice to get him into space with his speed....maybe like a Reggie Bush
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:38:12 AM)
Saine could certainly end up as a wide receiver at tOSU.....his hands are that good.....just gotta love recruiting all that speed....Small and Saine make up half of a world class 4 x 100M relay team.....LOL)
Oxford (Jun 19, 2006 10:38:28 AM)
What is the story with Morgan Williams from McKinley, I have always thought that if his grades come up he gets an offer, is this still the case?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:41:09 AM)
I may be in the minority here, but I am a HUGE Morgan Williams fan.....he has some grade issues that he needs to address....but he could very well get the second running back offer....his "slashing style" would be a great compliment to Chris Wells.....
Poz79 (Jun 19, 2006 10:41:25 AM)
How's JT and staff feel about Devon Torrence? Is waiting on test results the only delay in an offer or are there other factors, i.e. baseball?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:43:10 AM)
Simply stated, if Torrence gets the correct test score, he gets the offer(and accepts shortly after)...Torrence worked really hard on test preparation(went to the "test guru" to be completely prepared).....Torrence could be our next commit.....
buckgrad (Jun 19, 2006 10:43:24 AM)
late to the chat, but I see on the other network that Wright and Hankerson are coming to OSU thurs., what are you hearing about these two?
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 10:43:30 AM)
I saw some film on Major Wright, not the best speed but seems to be in the right place at the right time and he brings the wood every chance he gets! do we have a chance?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:44:48 AM)
long shots for sure...but the fact that they are coming up speaks volumes...having Chris Carter giving us an assist down there does not hurt...we certainly have a shot....
redondo (Jun 19, 2006 10:44:55 AM)
Hi Nevada - what do you see as the level of urgency in Coach Tressel's mind in getting back to the BCS championship game?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:46:48 AM)
I think JT realizes that these chances don't come along all that ofter(where you have the right players, the right schedule, etc...) He is reminding the players every chance he has how lucky they all are to be in this position.......Troy Smith has accepted the challenge and is going to be a "beast" this year....his leadership is vital...but all the pieces are in place...
palmer (Jun 19, 2006 10:46:55 AM)
I saw some pictures of the Woody Hayes rennovation....looks amazing! how do you think it will rank among the top facilities in the country?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:48:05 AM)
If not the best, it will be among the best. A truly amazing place to study, work and play. A "must see" for any visitors to the area.

Is there any thoughts from the "inside" (JT, players, etc.) on the time change of the UM game to 3:30?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 19, 2006 10:48:53 AM)
I know LLLLlllloyd can't be too happy (that's 4 big L's and 4 little ones, if you're scoring at home) ... a de facto night game at OSU ... wow.
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:50:09 AM)
the people that I've spoken to range from indifferent(they don't care what time it is, just that we will beat Michigan)--to excited that the entire country will get to witness us beating Michigan.......I think it is going to be an incredibly difficult environment for Michigan to play us.....
ohs (Jun 19, 2006 10:50:27 AM)
if we have only 12 juniors graduating next year, plus ginn will leave this year, seems like we have only a few scholies for 08 but 09 becomes really key if 26 graduate and others leave for other reasons?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:52:13 AM)
Next year TG is as good as gone to the pros--so there is one more there already....you will have transfers, grade attrition and injuries to contend with-----I count on those things happening(because they always do)...I really think this will smooth itself out.......
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:54:04 AM)
I love both of those guys...but don't forget about Person, Mitchum and Skinner---those guys have yet to be heard from....we are slowly but surely building the depth on the line...but it is happening.......
82dBuckeye (Jun 19, 2006 10:54:10 AM)
Good afternoon, Nevada. I can't seem to figure Tyler Moeller out. Everyone was so excited when he verballed, then later on there was some talk that he might get lost in the shuffle of all the other great LBs that we signed. Now I'm starting to here more and more excitement about this kid. I know it's a "wait and see" situation, but do you have any insight as to what I can excpect from him?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:56:47 AM)
Tyler is a tackling machine(think Bobby Boucher in the Waterboy)....he has packed on some weight and could throw himself in the mix this year(at least on special teams)....remember when Bobby Carpenter came down on the opening kickoff his first game as freshman and made the tackle?? It would not shock me to see Tyler have a similar impact.....you are going to love this kid......

Any truth to the rumor that Haw is looking to transfer? If he doesn't will that mean that we only take one RB in this class vs. two?
nevadabuck (Jun 19, 2006 10:59:04 AM)
I have not heard that about Haw(though it would not be shocking)....Lane is another one who there have been continued rumblings.....

Hi Nevada. Why did rose not play in the big 33 game?
SteveHelwagen (Jun 19, 2006 11:04:13 AM)
gbms also asked why Rose didn't play in the Big 33 ...
SteveHelwagen (Jun 19, 2006 11:05:17 AM)
The Ohio coaches were stuck with 2 games on the same night. They had the North-South coaches select the top 22 players from their regions first. Then they allowed the Big 33 coaches to come in and draft alternately for the rest. The North coaches obviously wanted Rose on their team, so they got first dibs. Why they didn't take Gibson and Small as well is beyond me, but they didn't.
SteveHelwagen (Jun 19, 2006 11:05:40 AM)
Guess they didn't need them, either, huh?
