Duane Long Chat Archive: June 23

Duane Long stopped by Bucknuts premium chat today for an hour to discuss OSU recruiting, Ohio prospects, and much more. We have a complete transcript from the chat posted now. Read below to check it out.

Mike68 (Jun 23, 2006 10:56:40 AM)
Duane- Could you give us your breakdown of how many recruits we will have by position in this class (using the #18 that Nevada has tossed out there)

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 10:58:34 AM)
I would say 3 OLs, 2 DTs, 2 CBSs, and the rest just the best athletes available. There are not alot of needs. That is where every school in the country wants to be. To just be able to take the best athletes looking their way.

hammbone1928 (Jun 23, 2006 10:58:36 AM)
does JT always offer a lot of DB I have him offering 12 - 13 CB. & 3-4 S?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 10:59:48 AM)
He has always offered alot of DBs. Ever since he has been here. I think with CBs it is need. I can't shake the feeling that the staff is not happy with the safeties.

ryan20 (Jun 23, 2006 10:59:58 AM)
Is there any chance the OLSM trio stays together for college? Possibility of an OSU pipeline developing up-north if we can grab any of them?

Kirk (Jun 23, 2006 11:00:25 AM)
(OLSM = Orchard Lake (Mich.) St. Mary HS)

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:01:47 AM)
I have no idea what those kids are going to do. They seem to be enjoying the recruiting process. Anytime you get several players out of a school in several years there is a relationship building.

ytown mayor (Jun 23, 2006 11:01:55 AM)
watsup d long, i got a question for you and The Rayen School Juniors Sal Battles and Gary Thornton. ScoutingOhio said that you mention them in Ohio High Mag. What did you say?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:03:03 AM)
Battles is one of the top skill athletes in the class. He has outstanding arm strength but I think he is a running back. Thronton is a fireplug with great feet and balance.

Mike68 (Jun 23, 2006 11:03:08 AM)
Other than getting an ACT score back, what else does Torrance need to do to get an offer?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:04:28 AM)
He needs to show them he can fit the bill at corner. I just got a call that puts him, Arnold and Evege in a group working together. No forty times. JT says vertical is the best indicator of what they want.

ryan20 (Jun 23, 2006 11:04:36 AM)
Any Ohio O-Linemen going to pick up an offer at this weeks camp?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:05:35 AM)
The biggest shock of the recruiting year would be any Ohio OL offered. True OL I mean. Not Jeremiah or Browne or Hughes.

Mike68 (Jun 23, 2006 11:05:49 AM)
Are Morgan Williams grades so bad that there is no way that the staff can seriously consider him?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:06:54 AM)
He and Gamble and Elliott are non-factors right now.

redondo (Jun 23, 2006 11:07:06 AM)
Duane - I see what you're saying about the safeties, but shouldn't we keep in mind that at this point, these are all JT recruits? So, if he doesn't like what he has, maybe he has to rethink how he goes about getting what he's got. Maybe he's just playing a numbers game & hopes he gets a real gem or two .

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:09:27 AM)
With 85 to offer and no more than 25 in a year. You end up with a lot of dead weight on the roster. That is something this staff has gone about avoiding. Look at the number of offers overall. Look at how few offenisve linemen. As important as they are offensive line is the last stop. There is nowhere to move down to.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:09:42 AM)
do we get clifford? seems like he's at Mich camp?

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:09:44 AM)
Do we get Jeremiah?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:11:14 AM)
Jeremiah will be a Buckeye as soon he is qualified. There is alot of talk about Clifford being a Buckeye. I have no first hand info but I think the Buckeyes lead.

ytown mayor (Jun 23, 2006 11:11:20 AM)
where do you think their skills ( Battles and Thornton)rank as far as what type of college level they could reach

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:12:49 AM)
I think Battles is at least a MAC player. Thornton gets his college paid for. The size factor is going to come into play but look at the offers for Frankie Edmunds this year. He is short, not small, just like Edmunds.

frank tieri (Jun 23, 2006 11:12:56 AM)
duane, evage is a great player, however he isnt as tall as many of our recent CB recruits....where will he make up for this in your eyes

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:13:54 AM)
Speed, attitude and intelligence. He has the mindset of a corner and is tough minded in general.

rbuck (Jun 23, 2006 11:14:00 AM)
Duane, what's with all the hype with Ross Homan? Aren't the comparison's to AJ a little much?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:15:04 AM)
Not at all. All you need to see is the spring game. Don't look at Hawk the senior. Go back and look at Hawk the freshman. There is little difference.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:15:10 AM)
Sorry to be late, I'm sure you've covered this but who do you expect to commit this weekend and what new offers do you predict are made? Thanks for the repeat.

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:16:39 AM)
There is no telling who is going to be offered and they can't commit because the offers cannot be made until they go home. So many players are there. So many we don'

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:16:42 AM)
even know yet who they are.

frank tieri (Jun 23, 2006 11:16:50 AM)
i was able to see zerbie sanders play last year and was amazed he was only a soph. he has a great frame, good at pass pro and with two seasons left in HS should be a great player.......your thoughts?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:18:05 AM)
I think he is a national player next year. I would like to see him get a bit nasty but the frame and the feet are special. He is in great shape too. Long arms. Love him.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:18:16 AM)
do you remain worried about OL and DT?

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:18:17 AM)
do we get martin now that ND has DE recruits already?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:21:08 AM)
I think we are 2 injuries away from potentially ending a run at the national title. The numbers on the offensive line really scare me. This year the DTs are fine but next year the middle of the line is swiss cheese unless we see a couple of top DTs come in. I think it helps that ND got a DE. No question. Depth chart matters. With the depth here it at least evens it up a bit. That was a big plus for Notre Dame. With a big timer in the same class things even out, at least some.

Hicks74 (Jun 23, 2006 11:21:20 AM)
Can you realistically see us getting Jeremiah AND Barksdale ? We are borderline thin now without Cotton and lose the three P's this year. Does Larimore get thrown in as a frosh ? Any other good DT's in your eyes if we only get one of the two ?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:23:46 AM)
I absolutely believe the Buckeyes land Jeremiah and Barksdale. I really like Hughes from Gahanna but he has to get his grades in order.

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:23:57 AM)
There is no need to throw Larimore in there. Depth is fine this year.

redondo (Jun 23, 2006 11:25:46 AM)
Hi Duane - Thank you for taking the time to chat with us today, BTW. A publication this week ranked the college coaches and had JT at 7 with Pete Carroll at #1 followed by Stoops, Richt, Ferentz, Weis, Meyer and then Tressel. Agree with ranking or disagree? Thank you.

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:30:45 AM)
That ranking was about who they would hire if a spot was open so it takes in factors beyond the coaching ability. I don't think you can include the guys who have only been in their schools for so short a time like Weiss and Meyer. Stoops had one great run. He has been beaten badly on several occasions. You don't see the top guys let that happen. I would have Carroll and JT in there and Ferentz. Meyer was at Utah. I don't know if we can count that. I think the guy at Oregon should be in the top 5. I am sorry I can't remember his name, and Mack Brown completely turned around the thinking on him. He was always a recruiting machine. Now he has won a national title.

or246 (Jun 23, 2006 11:30:58 AM)
Any chance Sanzenbacher gets an offer from the Buckeyes?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:32:31 AM)
I would be surprised. With the receivers here there is decent depth so they are only going to take an elite guy. Also you see something consistent with the receivers. Great size and athleticism or special speed. Sanzenbacher is such a play maker but he isn't the biggest and his best time is 4.6.

FairbornLawyer (Jun 23, 2006 11:32:48 AM)
I do not think I have seen anyone talking about Brandon Mitchell starting. I see an experienced upperclassman. He must be smart, based upon his academic accomplishments. I have generally seen steady, if not spectacular, play from him thus far in his career. He seems like the classic Tressell player. Is he going to be a starter?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:34:06 AM)
I do not believe in Mitchell against the run. With the injuries last year he got to play some and in the short time he was in there I saw too many bad run reads. He will play,a nd early on he may start, but I don't see him a year long starter.

Mike68 (Jun 23, 2006 11:34:15 AM)
If we don't get Martin, can you see us not taking a DE this year and using the spot for a 3rd DT?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:36:45 AM)
I think they could but it depends on who they have a shot at. The thing to keep in mind is the talent level here is so good that there is not going to be any reaching. Don't assume the staff is going to fill a spot with the best player available, even at the few need positions like DT and the OL. Can he play here? Is always the question this staff asks itself so the fans need to do the same thing.

hammbone1928 (Jun 23, 2006 11:37:03 AM)
Do you think OS will take a QB, Have they offered L Washinton?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:37:29 AM)
There is no real need at DE. Martin, and I would say Solomon, are only on the board because they are thay good.

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:38:45 AM)
I don't know who L. Washington is but I don't see a QB in this class.

wwt (Jun 23, 2006 11:39:01 AM)
You say we are 2 injuries away for ending a title run. Honestly, isn't that probably the same scenario for most teams (that are in the hunt)?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:41:27 AM)
I don't know anyone playing with this few OLs so I say no. The thing is there are so few of that 12 that are ready to step in and play. I have not heard anything that tells me anyone beyond the 5 projected starters and maybe Shafer are ready to play. Cordle can't get his weight up. Neither can Mitchum. Cordle is 265. The heaviest I have heard Mitchum is 272.

toledobuck24 (Jun 23, 2006 11:41:33 AM)
Duane who do you see getting early offers for next year? Who is the next "premier" player out of Ohio next year that will have all of us buzzing about?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:42:42 AM)
It is too early to say who is going to get early offers. We are just in July of 2006. Who knows what happens this year that changes the scenario for next year.

Hicks74 (Jun 23, 2006 11:43:00 AM)
Can we offer Torrence for baseball and let him walk-on for football and save a scholarship there ?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:43:31 AM)

ytown mayor (Jun 23, 2006 11:44:00 AM)
How do you feel about Steven Slade potential from the Rayen School?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:45:40 AM)
Good player. Needs to work on being consistently good. That is the knock on him. On highlight tapes he looks like a top 30 player. On game tape he disappears for stretches. He has talent. He will not have to worry about paying for his college education.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:45:45 AM)
my question was about 09 and 08. seems like with 12 grads plus ginn gone early we give only 12 scholies in 08 but 26 in 09. so 09 bettter be a great yr in Ohio. how do the 08 and 09 OH classes compare to 06 and 07. i realize its early

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:47:36 AM)
'08 looks great. OLs and LBs. It is skill player light. Moore from Trotwood, Adams from Buchtel and Battles from Rayen. After that it drops off. '09 is really too early to say.

Pastor Jack (Jun 23, 2006 11:47:41 AM)
Duane, who wins in a 40 yard race? Ginn, Gonzales or Small?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:48:43 AM)
Ginn. It would be a close race though, and on any given day any of the 3 could win.

redondo (Jun 23, 2006 11:48:47 AM)
Hi Duane - You're way closer to the scene than nearly all of us and a way better judge of what you're seeing, do you think the "title run" characteriztion is a fair "going in" assessment of the 2006 Buckeyes?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:50:31 AM)
Very much. If the defense finds it legs this is going to get interesting with Penn State and Michigan at home. 5-0 should be the catch phrase this year. Get by Texas at Texas and Iowa at Iowa early with the pups on defense and 12-0 is likely.

Hicks74 (Jun 23, 2006 11:50:40 AM)
Your feelings on Blankenship ?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:51:28 AM)
I have not talked to him and nobody I know that has can get a read on him. I think he could end up here. That is what I get. The interest is legit.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:51:47 AM)
Any commits then to expect this weekend?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:53:01 AM)
They can't. They have to go home and get the offers.

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:53:13 AM)
I also have learned they are taping everything. That sounds like they are not going to be making any offers soon.

ohs (Jun 23, 2006 11:53:29 AM)
who would you say whose off the radar emerges as a Great buckeye from ohio that we arent hearing about?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:55:10 AM)
There isn't anybody that comes to mind.

Hicks74 (Jun 23, 2006 11:55:11 AM)
Duane - Any updates on Claytor ? Is his dad putting the heat on ; ) ?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:56:50 AM)
I think fans should keep him at the forefront of their minds. He and Barksdale. Those are the out of state national kids I think the Buckeyes are the team to beat on. Both are at need positions. Put them at the top of your lists.

FairbornLawyer (Jun 23, 2006 11:56:58 AM)
I liked the early commit from Saine with the depth in front of him at OSU. What does that say about him?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 11:58:30 AM)
I think it shows a quality kid that has the attitude to be a star. Confidence matters. These kids pay attention to bepth charts but the great ones end up at the top of any depth chart but it starts with believing that.

ryan20 (Jun 23, 2006 11:58:36 AM)
Do you think that OSU is telling Robert Hughes and Clay that Brandon Saine will be looking to transition to WR?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 12:00:26 PM)
Only if they really believe that. I have talked to any number of families in the state and out of the state. I rather talk to the parents than the kids. One thing I have heard consistently is the Ohio State staff was the most honest and the most truthful. One mother last year with a big time son told me Ohio State was the only school that did not do any negative recruiting.

Kirk (Jun 23, 2006 12:00:54 PM)
Ok we'll have to make this next one the last question for today and then call it a chat. Duane and everyone thanks for stopping by today.

Hicks74 (Jun 23, 2006 12:00:56 PM)
I remember Jamario O' Neal being offered as a soph. Any underclassmen ie Zerbie Sanders worthy of an offer in your opinion ?

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 12:03:14 PM)
Worth it? Yes. Will it happen? No. The scholarship numbers are too tight to jump ahead like that. They will wait. Now, September 1st, when juniors to be can be offered and the staff has a better idea where things are, that can be a different thing. We will see.

Kirk (Jun 23, 2006 12:03:45 PM)
Ok everyone thanks for coming today! We'll get a transcript posted shortly. Have a good weekend and go Bucks!

ryan20 (Jun 23, 2006 12:03:49 PM)
Thanks Duane

Duane (Jun 23, 2006 12:03:53 PM)
