Housteau Chat Archive: June 29

Gary Housteau stopped by Bucknuts subscribers only chat on Thursday afternoon to talk OSU football, high school football and recruiting. We have a transcript of the chat posted below. Read on for more.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 10:51:13 AM)
Good afternoon...It's time to talk about some of our favorite subjects like Buckeye football and recruiting and whatever else is on your mind...let me guess???

buckeyeinsaline (Jun 29, 2006 10:55:10 AM)
Gary - Put us straight on the transfer situation with Eric Haw.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 10:55:10 AM)
Hi buckeyeinsaline...I first heard about this transfer from one of my new sources who happens to post on the free board about two or three weeks ago and when I immediately checked on it I discovered it to be factual. I had already forgotten about it actually. I let Steve know of what I was told then and I really haven't even checked on it since. Nevada came public with it yesterday or the day before and the rest is history. I liked E-Haw a lot. I remember the great debate we had on our boards about Pittman and Haw and even though I was always a Pittman guy, I certainly was excited about Haw. I wish him the best.

bucky (Jun 29, 2006 10:58:05 AM)
What's the latest on Ben Martin Gary? Do you think we get him in the end?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 10:58:05 AM)
Hi bucky...every single source I check with has Martin going to ND right now and that's very depressing. I also know a few of the ND media guys with Scout and Rivals and they seem to think the same. I won't count JT out until the ink is dry on the LOI with Martin...but I think they even realize it's a done deal. I hope my multiple sources are wrong. I am looking forward to seeing him play in week one however. I really like this kid... a lot.

Poz79 (Jun 29, 2006 11:01:31 AM)
Hi Gary. I know you've done a couple updates on Taurian Washington, surprised he hasn't been offered? Do you think an offer is coming his way?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:01:31 AM)
Hi Poz...yes and yes. I am surprised he hasn't gotten an offer because one...it's a position of dire need, especially when you consider Small's tenuous situation, two...he's certainly worthy of it when you look at the size and the speed and the ability to go get the ball. I saw him run track and I was impressed and I watched at camp last Friday and I was impressed with him even before I realized it was Washington. I like this kid. And three...Gant and Washington = Allen. Very simple mathematics here. But I do think he gets an offer...he has to. And yes I love Sanzenbacher before anybody asks. He's a totally different receiver if you ask me.

nuts4bucs (Jun 29, 2006 11:08:23 AM)
Can you verify any of the Ray Small rumors, good or bad?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:08:23 AM)
There are a plethora of Small questions in que and I'll just try to tackle them as best as I can. Where do I start? I've been privy to the inside scoop during the whole Ray Small recruitment..right up until the night before he left for Columbus. I've been told things that I can't say obviously and won't say now. Suffice it to say...I was under the assumption that Ray would be in by now. It obviously hasn't happened now but it sounds like it may still happen by August. I'm not sure. Right now it appears I was incorrect with Small's situation but it sounds like what I was told still might be the end result. Would I bet my mortgage on it now? No. But I do still think it will work out favorable for Small. Too many people are pulling for that favorable result.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:12:16 AM)
As far as some of the sniper fire that I take/took on the message board...I bring some of it on myself no question...but that comes with the territory. I'm a very loyal person and I believe and trust in the people that I respect in this business. There are a few that I have zero respect at all for but the people that know me well know how I work. If I get it wrong then I apologize because it lessens my credibility but I'm only trying to dig for the best information that I can find and pass it along to you. Let's hope for the best with Small.

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 11:13:51 AM)
Hi Gary. I dont have a question, more like a comment. Just wanted to say that i cant wait untill this season starts and that you guys are doing a heck of a job at Bucknuts. Thank you for your time.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:13:51 AM)
gbms30 obviously made a quick hit and run with a nice comment and we thank you for your kind words. It's much appreciated. It starts with Mr. B and then Steve and then on down. We appreciate your patronage.

JSBUCKEYE (Jun 29, 2006 11:15:55 AM)
Do you think Jamario Oneil will be a solid player or does he have star type talent.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:15:55 AM)
Hi JSBUCKEYE...I might be the biggest J.O. fan out there. Boy I like this kid on and off the field. Tremendous potential on the gridiron...I only hope that he can fulfill that potential. If he learns the game in a similar fashion that Donte Whitner did, then he can be over-the-top fantastic. I believe he has star talent written all over him. What a specimen he is back there.

kleintime16 (Jun 29, 2006 11:19:23 AM)
Hey Gary - what do you think of Bob L officially becoming the midwest analyst for scout? I bet we can see an increase in the rankings for players that we know should be ranked higher

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:19:23 AM)
I like it a lot Kleintime16...I genuinely think Bob is one of the good guys in this business and he is one of the guys I mentioned earlier that I have a lot of respect for because he earns it. I hope he has enough clout to move some of these Ohio kids up the chart. Anybody who doesn't understand that Ohio State wins with Ohio kids is taking themselves and their job way too seriously when it comes to rankings. Ohio is the heart of it all!

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 11:21:31 AM)
Gary - Any update on Schollie offers from the latest round of camps?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:21:31 AM)
It seems like vacation has set in for the OSU coaches and they hit the road with just the one round of scholarship offers after camp from what I can tell. I think in another two weeks or so we will start to hear of a new round of offers. That should give the staff sufficient time for vacation and time to reevaluate the situation.

JSBUCKEYE (Jun 29, 2006 11:23:50 AM)
Ray Small ...any word on him and would he play this year in your mind????

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:23:50 AM)
I sort of addressed Small's situation from the way I see it a couple of questions ago but I, for one, was not expecting him to make any major splash in his first year any way. I look at him as a natural candidate to replace TGII after he leaves next year. But if Small doesn't get in...it's all a moot point anyway.

MBuck37 (Jun 29, 2006 11:29:05 AM)
Gary Will Boom Herron committ soon? Will Devon Torrence be far behind? Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:29:05 AM)
Hi MBuck37...I personally believe that if Sanzenbacher doesn't commit soon then Herron will beat him to the punch. Speaking of Herron...I'm going to watch him practice and take some photos of him later this afternoon. I liked Herron a couple of years ago when all the rave was for Torrence and people were saying Herron was too small or too slow or couldn't catch. Herron and Jordan Mabin have been two of my favorites for a couple of years now. As far as Torrence is concerned I hear that it will be a couple of months possibly but OSU is in really good shape with him. I have had no personal contact at all with Torrence. But I think it looks really good for Herron and Sanzenbacher.

osufan27 (Jun 29, 2006 11:33:57 AM)
I heard the OSU staff is really unhappy with Kyle Hubbard not attending the senior camp? If he is out of the picture, who else gets offered at WR in Ohio? The only two names I can think of other than Sanzenbacher are Kyle Jefferson and Dante Jackson.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:33:57 AM)
Hi osufan27...I'm a big Kyle Hubbard fan...I saw him play on a few occasions last year and I was extremely impressed with him as a receiver. I love the kid actually. I've gotten to know Nate Oliver really well and that's his boy but Nate doesn't have a lot of good news to report on Hubbard. Nothing bad but nothing good either. We just talked about Hubbard last Friday when he didn't show up at the camp. Nate says OSU still has a shot...but they have to offer him first. I like all three of those other names and I like how Chris Givens looked at the Nike camp as well. I need to see Jefferson perform this year and I think Ohio State needs to as well. I'm really rooting for Dante Jackson also. If they bring Hubbard inside and go with Jefferson or Jackson or Givens with Sanzenbacher...I could live any of those combinations. I would say Hubbard is my top choice of them all in state and I like Washington from St. Marys. I think Hubbard is still in the picture.

Poz79 (Jun 29, 2006 11:38:04 AM)
Boom Herron, is he Columbus bound? Have you heard anything on V. Browne from Lisbon? I know he was at the June 3rd camp and seems he's been a forgotten man since.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:38:04 AM)
If I had to guess right now with Herron...yes! I would even throw in a wink but I've learned how negatively people react to it. Vincent Browne is still hanging in there. I've been in communication with his father and I know they would love to see an OSU offer materialize. But if it doesn't then Vince will have a few really good choices to fall back on. I would guess that OSU would want to see senior film on him because of his competition level if nothing else. I know Vince would like to decide before the season but if a school like OSU asks him to wait or be patient...I think he would comply with that. Vince is a great kid and I'm pulling for him to get an OSU offer...I think it will be for defense.

MBuck37 (Jun 29, 2006 11:39:16 AM)
Gary is Nick Claytor a solid LOCK! to become a Buckeye as all my fellow Bucknuts are saying? I sure hope so..Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:39:16 AM)
Hi MBuck37...I don't use the L word any longer but I sure think it's probably that he'll become a Buckeye. Smile!

JSBUCKEYE (Jun 29, 2006 11:43:15 AM)
Robert Rose seem like a future star at osu but does he make an impact this year???

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:43:15 AM)
impact is a relative term here. I've learned this year that you can't count Rose out on anything. He is a very confident individual and a really good athlete and he's an unbeliveable specimen. What he did this track season was astonishing to me. I followed him closely from midseason on when he wasn't even a factor with the shot put. And he's a really good hoop player also. Rose is a stud. How much of an impact I'm not sure but I'm sure we'll be hearing his name out there in a very favorable light. And he's a humble kid that's always striving to be better. It's hard to get much better young men on your team then Rob Rose and Bryant Browning. Browning is really a special young man.

MBuck37 (Jun 29, 2006 11:46:51 AM)
Alright Gary give us a potential Recruit that we all think we have no shot at but might just land......O'Dowd,D.Allen..Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:46:52 AM)
I'm going with Allen and Johnson. Why not. Here's my thinking. OSU already has Gant already who loves it here. He's already enrolled. If they get Washington, who Ohio State is his top choice, that may also get them Allen and getting Allen might also get them Johnson. I know it all sounds too good to be true...but I think there is a chance that could happen.

Hicks74 (Jun 29, 2006 11:50:41 AM)
Gary - Can you see Alex Barrow realistically sliding down to DT ? I am worried about next years numbers even if we land Barksdale and/or Jeremiah. Hopefully Abdallah really develops !! Larimore will redshirt and be unproven next year. Denlinger will be our only

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:50:41 AM)
Hi Hicks...yes I can. I was a nose guard in college and I like guys Patterson and Barrow who can handle themselves inside. Pitcock is a different animal and I love him but Patterson and Barrow seem to have that innate ability to navigate on the inside. I really like that ability. That's how I tried to play the game. Denlinger shows some of that ability. I still don't really have a read on Abdallah as of yet. Larimore just seems a chip off the old Tim Anderson block to me...which is a good thing. The others we'll have to learn more about in the future. But I can definitely see Barrow moving down inside.

JSBUCKEYE (Jun 29, 2006 11:53:07 AM)
Will Ted Ginn ever play db at osu in certain situations in your opinion?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:53:07 AM)
Yes...in the NFL! But I sure hope he would at Ohio State...he's a major talent at the corner position and I think we will see him in certain situations but very limited. It's a shame if you ask me! Especially with the inexperienced secondary this year I think TGII should be repping some at corner.

osufan27 (Jun 29, 2006 11:53:49 AM)
Have they offered Vince Browne are Solomon Thomas yet?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:53:49 AM)
To the best of my knowledge...Thomas yes...Browne no!

Hicks74 (Jun 29, 2006 11:56:04 AM)
Gary - For in-state offensive lineman, is there anyone other than Schepis you personally like ? Wetterer ? We are relying heavily on long distance odds .

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 11:56:04 AM)
I thought Dan Barry looked pretty good down in San Antonio but he's sort of disappeared on the radar. Barry is from Lake Catholic. I liked Schepis when I saw him play last year against Garfield before I even knew who he was.

redondo (Jun 29, 2006 12:00:49 PM)
Hi Gary - early going, i know, but who are the "must haves" in this class so far?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:00:50 PM)
Hi redondo...My "musthaves" are Martin, Clifford, Saine, Oliver and Hines. I guess you can say those are my top five in Ohio. I really like C.J. Peake a whole lot also. I put him in my top with those five other guys! Smile!

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 12:02:58 PM)
gary where will you be, if anywhere, for opening night ?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:02:58 PM)
Jewish Tim asks where I'll be going on opening night. I'm still fudging (what ?) with my schedule but I was originally planning on going to see Dover and Canton South open up the season on Thursday...but Buchtel and Steubenville might be too good of a game to pass up. Then I'm heading to Miami of Ohio and Cincinnati for my Friday and Saturday games. I have seven games on the docket for week one.

osufan27 (Jun 29, 2006 12:08:19 PM)
How are the Glenvile Jr's progressing? I'm excited about their underclassmen like Rowell and Dante's little brother (or big brother).

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:08:19 PM)
Their junior class is going to be really good. Shawntell Rowell and Dawawn Whitner are just two of the young stars. Cordale Scott is another one with big-time potential. Kevin Johnson, Torieal Gibson, Shelton Lundy are all going to become familiar names to you all in the next two years. And one of the big offensive lineman who came over from Warrensville Heights, Thomas I think is his last name, is a player also. And I'm sure there will be others. A lot of great prospects... both on the line and at the skill positions.

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 12:11:39 PM)
Gary is this your full-time job or do you do other things???? just wondering because it seems like a enjoyable job to have if money is good enough to make it a career.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:11:39 PM)
JSBUCKEYE asks if this is my full-time job...It's not but I approach it like it is. I work as relay operator with AT&T and I have a very flexible schedule for which I am thankful for. But I still put in 40 to 48 hours every week. Some day... when I grow up...I hope to do just this full time! The people that I've met and the friendships that I've developed over the years because of this type of job are priceless.

osufan27 (Jun 29, 2006 12:13:14 PM)
What big time OOS guy do we have the best chance of landing outside a couple of guys from Michigan and Georgia.. Any shot with O'Dowd?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:13:14 PM)
Out of state is not really my forte. I know as much about OOS guys, for the most part, as everyone else on our site does.

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 12:15:32 PM)
Will Chris Wells and Pittman scare away Herron or any other top rbs or does Tressel have it rolling so good he'll keep getting them?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:15:32 PM)
There's competition at every big school JSBUCKEYE...I think Herron will come in and redshirt...like his brother did at Michigan State and be a contributor down the road.

Lostbuck (Jun 29, 2006 12:19:31 PM)
Beyond the D-line, how is the Defense shaping up in general (if there is any news)?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:19:31 PM)
Hi Lostbuck...love the linebackers period. Regardless of who it is that's playing...we are in for a treat for the next three to four years minimum. Homan and Gibson are future studs...Homan could be one this year. I've always been a big John Kerr fan and it's great to have him as a veteran leader this year...but him and even Marcus Freeman I'm told better not slack for a minute or Homan could take either spot. Laurinaitis is a fixture for the next couple of years and Curtis Terry is a name I keep hearing more of from the players. Mark Johson and Tyler Moeller only add to the excitment. The secondary has two potential great playmakers in O'Neal and Russell. Nick Patterson is a solid guy back there also. Jenkins is a star and I would love to see Ginn at the other corner but Amos might have to suffice or Coleman. Great young talent everywhere.

kleintime16 (Jun 29, 2006 12:21:22 PM)
Speaking of Mabin ... with schollies opening up, he he eventually get one?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:21:22 PM)
I don't think he will kleintime...I was hoping to see him show up at OSU's camp even though I wasn't expecting him. I think people are going to wonder why he didn't get an offer when they see him play this year. I still think he's a special kind of running back. I hope he plays running back somewhere in college...be it Pitt or someplace else. Love the kid!

redondo (Jun 29, 2006 12:25:58 PM)
Hi Gary - Regarding Bob L., how does his role change, if at all, regarding hos view of Bucknuts and other sites? It would seem he has to be a bit more circumspect. Will he be a regular contributor in articels too? Thank you.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:25:58 PM)
Bob is a scout.com guy. IMHO they need our site more than we need them. People wouldn't have a clue who Bob L is or Chris P, let me correct that- to the extent they do know them, without our Ohio State affiliate on Scout. And Bucknuts is one of the best sites on the Scout network. I was told that Ohio State is number two on scout...and for the record I was told that BSB is 22nd best site on the Rivals network. Bob will write articles for scout that may be picked up by the team he's writing them for but he's not really assigned any stories by Bucknuts. But it's good to see him do a chat every now and then for sure.

Lostbuck (Jun 29, 2006 12:29:06 PM)
Any news on how the D-Line is shaping up? Who are lining up at the Ends?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:29:06 PM)
I'm guessing right now that Wilson and Richardson are the starters going in with Gohlston and Barrow right there as they head into camp. Look for Rose to have a say in the two-deep at some point soon. Williams and Worthington are still on the mend but will be factors at some point. Penton will be a solid backup inside with Pitcock and Patterson. The D-line is in good shape.

kleintime16 (Jun 29, 2006 12:32:29 PM)
Are you worried that if Ben Martin goes to ND that there could be a domino effect in the future ... sort of like communism (vietnam war) only a little different ... obviously he has the previous ties to ND that dont help OSU. Do you think future Ohio players will see this key player, who left the borders to play for Notre Lame, and follow suit?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:32:29 PM)
No I think Martin can only be looked at as an anomaly. I don't see any future trend developing. OSU clearly didn't go after John Ryan or Robby Parris, even though I loved Parris. Parris and Devon Jones were my top two wide receivers going into last year and if Jones gets his academic situation under wraps, he too could be in the NFL in three or four years. But no I don't see any Ohio kids to ND trend developing. If anyone can save Martin from the path he's headed down there please feel free to step to the plate! Smile!

PigMan (Jun 29, 2006 12:33:11 PM)
Is Saine being brought in as a RB? I've heard rumors (and you know what they are worth) that he was told he'll be moved to WR or DB.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:33:11 PM)
Hi Pigman...I see Saine as a RB until proven otherwise.

Guest (Jun 29, 2006 12:37:53 PM)
Glenville - Don't forget Lebron Daniel who came over from Warrensville and Chaz Jones who came from Cleveland Heights. Take that St. Ignatius and Ed's. How about an Ed's and Glenville rematch..Geeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez !

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:37:53 PM)
Hicks...I thought the question was junior class and so I didn't mention Daniel and Jones. Also there's a tailback from Warrensville Heights that came over and is suppose to vie for the starting spot. Ed's and Glenville rematch would be great. I'll take the 5th on that one right now till I can examine it further. Ed's is loaded.

MBuck37 (Jun 29, 2006 12:38:59 PM)
At one point Gary we were Recruiting Robert Hughes the RB from the Chicago Area any word? He just seems to have fallen off the map so to speak. Has the big RB(forgotten his name right now sorry) form Wisconsin committed to Wisky yet? Do we have a legit shot at him...

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:38:59 PM)
My sources say Clay to Wisky is a near certainty. I think Oglesby might have a say in that as well. Smile! I say OSU gets neither Hughes or Clay.

Ytownridah (Jun 29, 2006 12:39:35 PM)
Will our Juco transfer start at LB

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:39:35 PM)
I didn't even mention Larry Grant with my last LB diatribe...nor did I mention D'Andrea.

Ytownridah (Jun 29, 2006 12:40:40 PM)
Who will attract more attention Wells, or Ogden

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:40:40 PM)
They say that Oden would have been the top pick in the draft this year so go figure. But I think Beanie will do well (no pun intended) for himself. Very well thank you.

Ytownridah (Jun 29, 2006 12:41:48 PM)
After troy leaves, is it back to smash mouth football since the other qb"s arent as athletic?

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:41:48 PM)
Hi Ytownridah...we might see more smashmouth this year than people want to see. A young defense with a powerful offense is a blueprint for good old YSU smashmouth football!

Billy the Fag (Jun 29, 2006 12:44:34 PM)
any western pa guys looking at OSU. and when you were in Hershey which PSU bound guys impressed you the most

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:44:34 PM)
Pretty much all the stars of the game for the PA team ... Devlin, Dixon at QB, Odrick and McEowen, Williams the receiver/return man and I just loved Elijah Fields. I'm surprised that OSU isn't in on many more of the Western PA guys this year.

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:47:31 PM)
That's all for now guys. I'm off to Warren to visit with Danny Herron. I'll let you know if I learn anything. Thanks for spending some time chatting with me today. I appreciate all of the questions and I'm sorry if I didn't get to yours. There was a nice turnout today and I thank you for your participation. Thanks also to all of you Bucknuts out there for reading through the chat at a later time. Go Bucks!

Ytownridah (Jun 29, 2006 12:48:47 PM)
Will Boone start now that this DWI thing is almost behind him, or is he still in the dog house

GaryHousteau (Jun 29, 2006 12:48:47 PM)
If he deserves to start on the field, then he'll start. He might pay for his transgression off the field during practice or the preseason but if he deserves to start then he'll start.
