GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 10:54:18 AM)
Good afternoon everybody!

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 10:56:30 AM)
I attended a youth football camp yesterday and today at Youngstown Ursuline High School and Jim Cordle was a guest at the camp. Over the two days I spoke with Darryl Clark (Penn State), David Herron (Danny's brother), Anthony Smith (Syracuse and Pittsburgh Steelers) and others. Nice youth camp put on by Coach Dan Reardon.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 10:58:00 AM)
Hey Gary - how is your afternoon coming along

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 10:58:00 AM)
Hi Kleintime...I'm doing well today thanks for asking. I was very impressed today to see David Herron from Michigan State. Boy is he physically impressive. I introduced him to Jim Cordle because they may be running into each other later in the year, literally. David is Danny's big brother and was the fullback for Reecie at Harding.

marksgforce (Jul 7, 2006 11:02:19 AM)
What does Small have to do to secure his spot with OSU? Is there still a lot of reason for optimism?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:02:19 AM)
Hi marksgforce...I think it's best that I dance around this question for now. I've been called "Mr. Authority" by people who have no idea of what I know who told it to me...referring to me having no idea of what is going on. So I'll stick with my original position and say from what I know and what I've been told from someone who knows, Small will be a Buckeye when the dust settles. If it doesn't turn out that way, then I apologize ahead of time for passing along information from a credible source that was inaccurate. But I have good reason to feel that Small will be on the roster in the fall. Let's hope it works out that way!

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 11:03:30 AM)
Are you hearing good things about Herron ... some seem to think that a committment is unavoidable this coming weekend

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:03:30 AM)
Yes Klein from what I know and have been told, I feel very good about a imminent commitment to Ohio State that could happen any time.

marksgforce (Jul 7, 2006 11:08:21 AM)
Soloman Thomas ... how close is he in talent to Martin ... how close is OSU to securing his commitment? (VMI???)

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:08:21 AM)
I've seen Martin play in person and I love his game...a lot. I haven't seen Thomas play in person but I have eyeballed him and he looks the part for sure. Unless something changes from I've been told, Ohio State would have a lot of work to do to secure his commitment. His relationship with VMI and the former OSU DB Richard McNutt, who coaches there, is a solid one. But just from what I know, I would guess OSU has a ways to go to convince Thomas that OSU is the right choice for him. I like him but I like Martin better.

marksgforce (Jul 7, 2006 11:10:44 AM)
From your relationship with Ted Sr., has Teddy's plans after this year ever come up? The assumption is he's gone. Any chance he'd stay? If he leaves, how close would he be to getting a degree?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:10:44 AM)
Let's just say marks that the assumption is a good one to make. Barring injury, this is the last we will see of TGII in an OSU uniform. I do not have any idea of his status toward obtaining a degree.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 11:11:20 AM)
The Barksdale recruitment seems up in the air now after his unofficial to Texas - is OSU losing ground?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:11:20 AM)
I still feel good about OSU's chances with Barksdale...very good!

jimt09 (Jul 7, 2006 11:14:15 AM)
Do you think that the offense Tressel runs will ever let a QB put up the numbers to win a Heisman? I think that Troy can have a fabulous season, win the NC, be the best player in college football and still not have the numbers to impress voters.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:14:15 AM)
Hi jimt09...I think Pittman and Wells might have a better chance at the Heisman this year than Troy Smith. I believe that OSU will pound the football until the cows come home with the luxury of being able to go vertical at any situation any time. The rule of the land in Buckeye country this year will be to control the ball and the clock like they've never controlled it before. Time of possession will be the number one state for JT's offense this year. So for all of you who are holding hope in seeing a prolific vertical offense, don't hold your breath. The time is right to play smashmouth football...YSU style!

BuckeyesRule (Jul 7, 2006 11:16:15 AM)
Where do you believe Mitchell Evans will end up?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:16:15 AM)
Hi BuckeyesRule, I like what little I've seen of Mitchell Evans so far and I look forward to seeing him in the playoffs potentially. As to where he will end up...I have no idea but I'm sure it will be MAC or higher.

murfinatl (Jul 7, 2006 11:20:22 AM)
I work for a living so it is hard to keep up. Can you summarize the transfers, available scholarships, and likely size of this class.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:20:22 AM)
Hi murfinatl...I work for a living too and it's hard for me to know what day it is sometime but based upon Steve's information of late I beleive he said there's like 17 with the inclusion of Roberts transferring (senior anyway) and others like TGII could be added if they should leave early. Also there seems to be a loss of one or two through academic attrition. So OSU is looking at having 18 to 20 guys in this recruiting class. Steve follows that kind of stuff much closer than I do.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 11:23:07 AM)
Are you for or against the late start of the Michigan game?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:23:07 AM)
jimt09 asks if I'm for or against the late start against Michigan and I'm against it. I love the crisp afternoon daytime weather as opposed to cold and damp and dreary by games end. It also gives me no chance at a Saturday night playoff game somewhere in Ohio. I'm definitely against the late start. Besides, we've all grown up so accustomed to seeing the early afternoon start for this classic.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 11:27:06 AM)
What do you think about C Wells THIS YEAR eventually leading the depth chart ... with NO injuries to A Pittman?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:27:06 AM)
Pittman is clearly the man but Beanie will do things that will leave us all in disbelief. I clearly can see both backs having a chance at 1,000 yards in this offense. Pittman with like 1,700 and Beanie with about 1,300 yards. Wouldn't that be wonderful. Chris Wells is absolutely terrific and I'll take this one moment to tell everybody that Brandon Beachum of Cardinal Mooney will be the next Chris Wells. Mooney plays Harding in like week four or five I believe and it will be Beachum against Herron. I think Mooney just might steamroll every team on their schedule this year...and that includes a talented Harding team.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 11:30:50 AM)
I understand Curt Lukens received a medical waiver ... what exactly does this mean? I believe this year he would be a redshirt junior ... what does the medical waiver do for his status? Is he still on the team? Will he remain a redshirt junior? How does it affect the scholarship count?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:30:50 AM)
Klein if that is indeed true an Lukens has a medical waiver, to the best of my knowledge, it means that he's removed from his current status with the football team but retains his scholarship to complete his academic commitment. He would no longer count toward the 85 on scholarship but can continue his education at Ohio State and maybe even be a part of the team in some capacity.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 11:35:28 AM)
Chad Hoobler seems to be a forgotten asset. In all of the Pre Season Magazines he doesn't appear on the depth chart. Is he still in the mix? He seems far more athletic then Kerr.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:35:28 AM)
passthebuck asked about Hoobler and from I was told recently, he had arthoscopic surgery on his knee, I believe, and is making good progress with his recovery. But I was also told that even if he is ready to go full-speed in the fall that a redshirt season is being contemplated. As far as Kerr is concerned, multiple sources keep telling me that Kerr is as solid as they come.

jimt09 (Jul 7, 2006 11:35:40 AM)
Is there any chance that we look ahead to Texas and take the opener against Northern Illinios too lightly? Sorry, but the summer seems so long-I'm really ready for some football.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:35:40 AM)
NO!

Royal Flush47 (Jul 7, 2006 11:40:50 AM)
Who from Youngstown in 2008 do you think OSU will land? Is Mike Zordich going to be tough to get considering his dad played at PSU?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:40:50 AM)
Hi Royal...I feel really good about Ohio State landing Beachum if they just step up to the plate with an offer. Zordich is also in play. His dad will run no interference with his son if his son should be interested in Ohio State...and he is. Of course Penn State is a viable option. I like Justin Brown from Ursuline as a defensive end prospect. He's already a legitimate 6-3 and 245 pounds and is a football player. Taylor Hill and Danny McCarthy are also serious studs at Mooney. All five of these young men will be considered as top D-I candidates after this upcoming season ends. There are a handful of others too but those five are right at the top no question.

reepoman21 (Jul 7, 2006 11:41:32 AM)
Speaking of Boom Herron, do we get his committment today?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:41:32 AM)
I certainly expect it any time reepoman21.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 11:43:23 AM)
Dane Sanzenbacher = Buckeye by monday?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:43:23 AM)
That seems a little fast forward from what I was recently told but I have no objection to it. The sooner the better. I'm certain it will happen before Aug. 3. Sanzenbacher is a player!

Hicks74 (Jul 7, 2006 11:45:58 AM)
Gary , how many scholarships are below with the transfer of Roberts and Haw and losing Lukens ? How is Worthington coming along ?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:45:58 AM)
I sort of addressed this earlier Hicks but I'm not real certain myself. I think that Lukens would open up another slot if he is getting a medical waiver. I don't believe Steve included him in his recent count but I'm not sure. I would guess 18 to 21 sounds about right. I hear Worthington is coming along great but I doubt if he'll be where he wants to be come Sept. 2. The same for Ryan Williams but that's only speculation on my part.

westonbuckeye (Jul 7, 2006 11:48:16 AM)
Will we ever see what the heavy recruitment on M Wells was all about? What did the coaches see in him that should get us all excited?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:48:16 AM)
Hi westonbuckeye...I think we all saw a glimpse of the potential excitement late in the season, was it against Northwestern or Illinois? I can see him being a multiple-threat in the slot at some point in the future with his speed and quickness. He had that tremendous junior season in Florida that is really hard to overlook. I still believe he can contribute in some solid fashion.

Hicks74 (Jul 7, 2006 11:51:17 AM)
Hi Gary, I am breathing a little easier for the future of our O-Line if Barton stays this year, especially if we get Claytor , O'Dowd or esp Davis. We could have a decent blend of exp with Barton/Rehring/Boone with extensive experience and whovever we blend in this year like Cordle/Kerr/Person/Skinner/Smith/Browning - Your thoughts ?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:51:17 AM)
I talked briefly with Jimmy Cordle today about the line and he's excited about the potential of the group not only this year but in the years to come. Cordle feels he has a legitimate shot at center although Datish may be destined for the spot this year. The best 5 will play and if that means moving Datish to guard to play Cordle, then so be it. I think the future is in good hands with guys like Skinner and Smith and Browning added to the guys like Cordle and Boone and Rehring and Barton, if he sticks around another year.

murfinatl (Jul 7, 2006 11:54:40 AM)
didn't mean to imply that you don't work for a living, Gary. I meant that my work keeps me from football! Why isn't HS football in central Ohio on par with NE or even Cincy, given that it is right in the shadows of the Shoe, so to speak?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:54:40 AM)
I understood your implication, I was just referring to myself because I do have another job that I do work for a living in addition to my duties at Bucknuts so I understand the insanity of it all. As far as the disparity in talent with Central Ohio compared to the NE and the Cincy area...I have no answer for it. Cincy seems to have the upper hand over everyone on a team basis but individually the best talent overall seems to come from Northeast Ohio, at least in recent seasons.

stunkcub (Jul 7, 2006 11:56:51 AM)
if this hasnt been asked, what do you think about the Fitzgerald hire by NU?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:56:51 AM)
If that indeed is what happened...I like it. I think he represents NW to the core and they can build anew with him at the helm. There could be some rough growing pains ahead for the university but in the long run he'll be a great career hire.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 11:58:48 AM)
How many Glenville players in the 2008 class are OSU material?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:58:48 AM)
Royal Flush asks about the Glenville players in the 2008 class and I would guess it would be the standard two to three guys are top notch OSU caliber in that class led by Shawntel Rowell and Dawawn Whitner along with Cordale Scott and a couple others. Marcus Hall in 2009 is certain to be a big-timer.

Ytownbuckeye (Jul 7, 2006 11:59:30 AM)
Is Haw really transferring and do we care?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 11:59:30 AM)
Yeah he is Ytown and sure we care!

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 12:03:58 PM)
I am hearing mixed reviews on Ben Martin right now ... whats the latest you have heard?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:03:58 PM)
The reviews as far as him being a player aren't mixed because everything I talk to thinks this kid is a stud, but there has been new revelations on the messageboard just recently that have Martin being in a much better situation with OSU than has recently been speculated. I will answer that by saying, most if not all of the people that I consult with tell me that Martin is leaning hard toward ND. If this new source on the message board knows something none of my people are aware of than that's a good thing for OSU. I would hate to see Ohio State lose their best prospect. I would equate losing Martin to losing Marion Manningham last year. To certain of being the real thing to let get away.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 12:05:26 PM)
Hines = still no offer? What is the hold up ... do you think he ends up in the class when all is said and done?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:05:26 PM)
I would guess that when the ACT score fits the profile, he'll get the offer. I will say that having trouble getting Lenix and now Small in doesn't help the cause for the next guy in line. Hines is football player and I hope an offer finds a way into his hands but I'm guessing it won't happen for some time.

Ytownbuckeye (Jul 7, 2006 12:06:37 PM)
Who is a better recruiter, Tressel or Matta?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:06:37 PM)
Filet Mignon or a big fat T-bone??? Love 'em both. No real preference. Glad to have them both on our team.

marksgforce (Jul 7, 2006 12:08:12 PM)
Any update on how Louis is doing at YSU? If he keeps his nose clean will he get his shot at the NFL? How tough is it to get drafted from D-IAA

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:08:12 PM)
Louis is doing well. He has two years of eligibility and I'm certain that one eye is looking to a career at the next level. I believe he will have a shot at a career at the next level but it won't be an easy journey for him to complete. I think he'll definitely have an some sort of opportunity. I'm sure he will.

BuckeyesRule (Jul 7, 2006 12:13:24 PM)
Gary, given the performance Robert Rose put up a couple of weeks ago in the exhibition game, how likely do you believe it to be that he will see any playing time this Fall, or is a redshirt in his immediate future. (Gary, this is Scott, who has met and chatted with you at Amy and Joe's house. My godson is Ray Jones at Stanford, where he is one of the top two backs going into this coming season................hope all is good for you, Angie and your daughter.)

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:13:24 PM)
Hi Scott...nice talking with you. Everything is well thank you for asking. I love Robert Rose and he gets better with the bigger challenge. I remember one of the scout.com guys telling me the week before the Army AA game that Rose shouldn't even be going down there and instead some defensive end from new jersey should have. I just told him to wait and see and by Wednesday of that following week during practice leading up to the game, he understood completely what I was talking about. Rose is a stud. I believe he will not redshirt whether he plays only special teams or gets playing time at defensive end in some capacity. Cream rises and Rose is a stud full of cream! Smile! Good to hear that Ray from Columbus Academy, right ?, is doing so well.

Hicks74 (Jul 7, 2006 12:15:16 PM)
DT remains a concern. Any insight on how close we may be to offering Jeremiah ? Barksdale worries me. He is being overwhelmed with offers.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:15:16 PM)
I don't know what the hold up with Jeremiah is Hicks. He looks the part. I've seen him at two different camps now. I'm not really concerned a great deal with Barksdale. I think OSU is in really good shape with him despite the goings on with him.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 12:17:19 PM)
Gary you do a great job and thanks for all your work bringing us our needed buckeye fix. is this the year that Tress gets his desired 250yds passing and 200 rushing per game?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:17:19 PM)
Hi Youngstown Freddie...I could be the year for those elusive totals but I think the running totals will surpass the passing totals this year from the way I see it. The talent is certainly there to be able to throw it all over the field but with a young defense on board, it's just not a Tressel-like thing to do.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 12:18:55 PM)
also who do you see as the best options for the 3rd and 4th reciever next to ginn and gonzo

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:18:56 PM)
Definitely Hall first off. I have tremendous expectations for him in his final season as a Buckeye. I also think Hartline just may find a niche in this offense this year. Robiskie and Hartline will probably both get their share of chances at one time or another throughout the season.

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 12:20:20 PM)
How D'Andrea doing? Is his knee any better?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:20:20 PM)
Nothing new to report on D'Andrea sorry westonbuckeye! It's likely to be an ongoing situation with his knee. I only wish for the best for him. Just a great kid!

jimt09 (Jul 7, 2006 12:21:43 PM)
I recently me Juan Garnier, whom I believe transfered from Auburn. He seems like a really nice kid. What are his chances to see some quality p/t this season?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:21:43 PM)
I would think he would have a ways to go to beat out Penton and Abdallah for any substantial playing time as a backup...but he certainly adds to the depth after losing Maupin and Cotton in consecutive seasons.

ohs (Jul 7, 2006 12:23:29 PM)
Do we get Boom, Solomon, Clifford and the WR from Toledo?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:23:29 PM)
Hi ohs...I feel really good about Herron and Sanzenbacher, I feel pretty good about Clifford and I'm not too sure about Solomon. I've never called Herron Boom before so it sounds kind of odd to me!

jimt09 (Jul 7, 2006 12:24:39 PM)
Starting linebackers for '06, Kerr, Freeman, and baby Animal?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:24:39 PM)
Right now I say that's an accurate assessment. But boy do I love Homan and I think Gibson is really special also. Terry is certainly a force to be reckoned with. And Grant and others. Love the depth.

Hicks74 (Jul 7, 2006 12:27:39 PM)
You honestly believe Beachum will be in the same breath as CWells when all is said and done ?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:27:39 PM)
Yes! A notch above Clarett and maybe a notch below Chris Wells. He's a monster and with the team he plays on, he won't even get touched until he buckles a safety in the secondary a majority of the time. That's just the way I see it. I'm not someone that's wishy-washy when I throw praise on a player. Once they've earned it in my book, then I come with the cavalry!

Guest (Jul 7, 2006 12:29:58 PM)
Do you like Rose more than Martin

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:29:58 PM)
The scary thing is that I think Martin is a better all-around football player than Rose and Rose is one of my all-time favorite players. Teddy, Chris Wells and Robert Rose are right at the top of the list of my all-time favorite guys.

kleintime16 (Jul 7, 2006 12:32:32 PM)
No Devon Torrence talk ... seems to me he is a PRETTY BIG buckeye lean ... wink wink ... do you think he is thinking OSU or is BBall going to draw him away?

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:32:32 PM)
I have no relationship or communication with Torrence so I have no first-hand information on the kid.

GaryHousteau (Jul 7, 2006 12:37:52 PM)
With that last question...I'm going to call it a day. I do want to add when I was talking about the offensive line earlier, Tim Schafer is another candidate who could surprise for playing time at the other guard position if Datish stays at center. But for now I want to thank everyone for taking the time to be a part of the chat today and also to those of you who took the time to read it later on. Let's hope that by the next time we chat Danny Herron and possibly even Dane Sanzenbacher will possibly be committed to Ohio State. Have a great weekend. Go Bucks!
