Housteau Chat Archive: July 14

Bucknuts reporter Gary Housteau stopped by this afternoon for a weekly chat with premium subscribers. Housteau discussed the latest with Ohio State football recruiting and talked some about this year's team and this year's high school football season. Check out the transcript below.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 10:55:09 AM)
Please feel free to fire away with any questions on your mind. Keep in mind I focus mainly on instate guys but I'll try my best to tell you what I know with the Michigan prospects for instance.

hammbone1928 (Jul 14, 2006 10:59:02 AM)
If OS takes 1 LB . Between Lindsy (whom they have offered or Elliott not offered Grades?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 10:59:02 AM)
I like Lidsey a lot but I have no idea why he wouldn't be signed, sealed and delivered to Penn State being from Alliquippa. I don't know enough about Elliott and he didn't really thrill as much as some other LBs from the look test when I saw him at the Nike camp in May. I happen to Hines and Dailey a lot. I watched Dailey closely at OSU's camp and I thought he looked pretty good. Hines can play the game...I've seen that in person. Hines some test score issues in front of him.

eyeofbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:03:28 AM)
Gary, could it possibly happen that Greg Oden never logs in a minute of playing time at tOSU before he leaves for the NBA? If this injury were to keep him out the whole year then he goes pro. Do you think he goes NBA after the first year at tOSU?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:03:28 AM)
Hi eyeofbuck...I'm not a big basketball guy...I think Steve and Kyle do a great job for Bucknuts on basketball...Dave as well. But if I were to guess about Oden, if he never played a minute this year at OSU then I believe he would want to come back and play a year before he made the jump to the NBA. The money is always going to be there for him when he decides to make the jumb. I would hope OSU gets at least one solid year out of him.

rbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:05:50 AM)
Hi Gary, You're the MAN! I'm NOSY! Can you tell us what your important call pertained to? I'm thinking it has to do with a possible recruit?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:05:50 AM)
Hi rbuck...thanks for the kind words. I try to call at least three or four of my good sources for updates before I chat so I can share the latest information with you guys during the chat. The last call I was on was with regards to the four Michigan guys that I try to keep track of. Mainly Ron Johnson this time around because he's been mentioned on our site quite a bit recently.

Dingbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:08:36 AM)
Do you have more scoop on this jr-to-be from Buchtel who was talked about on Bucknuts recently? Is he an OSU lean?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:08:36 AM)
Hi Dingbuck...Johnny Adams is really nice young man and he's very excited to be a part of the recruiting process now. He's more than okay when it comes to his age, just turning 17 in June so that's not a concern. Coach Brown is a great guy over at Buchtel and I would say he's a solid Buckeye advocate so Ohio State is in good shape with Adams if they decide to pursue him...no question! He's a fantastic player.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:10:15 AM)
The kid from Harvey, Chris Fields, who will be a sophomore this year is a similar type of player but Adams has already gotten it done on the field where Fields still needs to make it happen. Both are potentially very exciting players and both would look good in Scarlet and Gray in the future. But yes OSU is in great shape with Adams if they pursue him.

hammbone1928 (Jul 14, 2006 11:13:15 AM)
If Thomas is offered, do you think OS has a shot or is it GTech I think he's interested in & what's the info on Hemingway?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:13:16 AM)
Hi hammbone...If you're speaking of Eric Thomas from Benedictine...I really like this kid a lot. If OSU were to offer, then yes they would have a great shot at him. I'd take him and worry about a position later. I've been watching Thomas closely since his sophomore year when he was blocking for Jahmal Brown. He's not the greatest play maker I've ever seen on defense but the physical potential is obviously there.

Dingbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:15:25 AM)
Gary, not a football question but being you are from Y-town, what is the word on where TDials might end up?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:15:25 AM)
Hi Dingbuck...I was always hoping that Dials would somehow get a shot with the Cavs being the homer that I am. Dials is such a class kid and he was the Big Ten player of the year and he can do all the unselfish stuff the Cavaliers need from a big man...but I don't believe he'll have that chance. I believe he's playing with two different summer league teams this summer from what I've read. The Vindicator here in Y-town has been following him closely. I just hope he makes it in the league with anyone. Great kid!

labsbeabmm (Jul 14, 2006 11:19:56 AM)
It is imressive the skill players we have gotten but where are the "big uglies" which are critical to the program?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:19:56 AM)
Hi labsbeabmm...the big uglies are MIA at this point. I heard from someone in the program that Bollman actually like Schepis but he obviously went to BC so that's a moot point. I liked Dan Barry down in San Antonio but he sort of disappeared when it came time for some of the other camps so I assumed he was no longer a candidate...but his name has resurfaced recently. Jeff Spikes from Harvey is a name that keeps coming up as a possible "project." He didn't play a down last year and some coaches just want to see him breathing in a uniform this year before they get more involved. I can tell you from what I know that if OSU comes sniffing around in any way, then he would certainly be interested no question. He's really big and he certainly looks the part. That's about the best that the Buckeye state has to offer.

Dingbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:22:05 AM)
I think I understand it, but what exactly is 7-on-7 that the players do in the off-season? What seven positions?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:22:05 AM)
It's basically everybody but all of the lineman on both sides of the ball. I guess they include the center (figuratively) on offense. It's basically a passing drill that the offensive players go against the back seven of the defense. High schools are doing them all over the state and the OSU players have certain times throughout the summer that they do the drill as well.

eyeofbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:24:47 AM)
Ive heard rumors of a top rated CB being a real possiblity for us. besides what we have and Scott and also Clifford, who else do you think this might be?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:24:47 AM)
Eye...I think Allen is certainly a top-rated CB that OSU is interested in if that's who you would be referring to. I think OSU is still in the game with him as well as Michigan and FSU. Clifford is obviously a fantastic player that I'm hearing good things about...and help me out with Scott...I'm drawing a blank! I like OSU's chances with Clifford.

Dingbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:27:33 AM)
Gray, how much access do you have to OSU players for interviews or pictures or informal talks?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:27:33 AM)
Informally I have a lot of access to certain OSU players. I've been on the sidelines and in the high schools of many of the current Ohio State players and they just don't forget who you are all of the sudden. But it's always good to follow protocol formally.

rbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:30:51 AM)
I hear the tide is turning with Ben Martin, have you talked to Ben of late? What's the word?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:30:52 AM)
rbuck that's great news if that indeed is the case with the Martin and I certainly hope it is. I hope his unofficial to OSU goes well. Again I will say that many people who I have spoken have considered Martin a lean to ND. I hope to talk with him soon so I can get a feel for where he stands myself. Again he's my top player in the state no question. Love the kid. He's a guy that has to stay instate.

Hicks74 (Jul 14, 2006 11:36:03 AM)
Do you think Spikes from Painesville Harvey might get an offer ? Sounds like he recently opened some eyes at recent camps after sitting out last year. He is massive and athletic !

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:36:03 AM)
I certainly believe he's a guy that a lot of coaches are taking a look at because he looks so darn imposing with his pads off. I told him just last week that he looks like Orlando Brown who once played for the Cleveland Browns. But the kids hasn't played a down since halfway through his sophomore season and they need to see him in action this year. I'm told just a scrimmage tape could start bringing in more offers. Right now Pittsburgh has been the biggest school to take the leap without any game tape but a whole host of schools are anxiously waiting for game tape on him. And I'm certain that Culliver would steer him right to OSU if an offer would emerge. He's already earned the trust and respect of his kids at Harvey.

Guest (Jul 14, 2006 11:42:00 AM)
Gary who are the top three players in northeast ohio and who are the top three teams?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:42:01 AM)
Tony2246 asked this question about the top three players in NE Ohio and the top three teams? I'm not quite sure what his parameters are for NE Ohio but if Cleveland is included than I would have to say that Ed's, Glenville and Massillon might be considered to be the three best teams. It's likely all three of those teams will be around in the Regional finals again this year. As far as players go...I like Nate Oliver, Jermale Hines and Danny Herron. Once again, I'll say that I'm a really big Jordan Mabin fan for the record and I even like Brian Gamble a whole lot but I would say those guys are some of the best individual talents in NE Ohio this year.

touchdownron (Jul 14, 2006 11:45:45 AM)
Hi Gary who do you see next to comit here locally

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:45:45 AM)
Torrence obviously isn't going to happen until sometime in the fall but that's a certainty. There's not a real long list of candidates even if locally means instate. I hope Torrence isn't the next instate commitment because that could be long ways away. But Herron and Sanzenbacher were guarantees from the minute they were offered. I'm not certain what Solomon Thomas is thinking about but he could be a candidate.

JohnnyBuckeye (Jul 14, 2006 11:51:02 AM)
What can you tell us about this fabulous OL class that is supposed to be queued up for next year?? Are they as good as we keep hearing?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:51:02 AM)
I saw Mike Adams down on the field for the spring game and I saw JT go out of his way to say hello to Mike Adams. I haven't seen him play and I haven't even seen any video on him yet but I hear a lot of good things about him. I was very impressed with Sanders at OSU's camp. He still looks like a young pup and is very impressive. He reminds me a great deal of Justin Brown, the fantastic defensive end prospect in the same class from Youngstown Ursuline. These two guys already look the part but they look like babies still in person. So much growing to do still you can just tell. Adams and Sanders are headliners no question. Steve talked about a couple of the OOS kids OSU is high on but I have no basis to comment on. I saw the Comeaux from Massillon in person and he could be a nice player as well. But I think Adams and Sanders are fantastic prospects. I'm looking forward to seeing them this year.

rbuck (Jul 14, 2006 11:55:25 AM)
Do you believe Troy Smith will be an NFL starting quarterback?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:55:25 AM)
I'm certain a lot of you want me to say yes and I hope he indeed is. He's a fine young man and any Glenville kid that makes it to the League is certainly okay with me. But I've also followed Brad Smith's entire career, he's from Youngstown, and he didn't have a shot at being looked at as a QB. He's tall, athletic, can run and has a great arm. And he wanted to play QB and he still may end up at the position some day. I honestly believe that TS still has a lot of growing to do at quarterback and he may someday be a starting QB in the NFL but right now I would say the odds are probably against that happening. I hope I'm wrong and I hope he proves me wrong.

JohnnyBuckeye (Jul 14, 2006 11:58:43 AM)
Have you heard any more on Devon Torrence? Football or Baseball? Also, will his brother be an OSU-caliber recruit as well?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 11:58:43 AM)
Hi JohnnyBuckeye...I will see Devon and his brother and Waters in week one at Dover but I have no first-hand information on him.

rbuck (Jul 14, 2006 12:03:24 PM)
I know you really like John Kerr, what are your thoughts on his brother? Also I'm not sure, are you a fan of Beanie Wells? You're the best Gary!

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:03:24 PM)
I do like John Kerr because I like football players, guys that are intense about what they do and they make plays out on the field. They stand out. Kerr is one of those guys. I have no idea about how his brother will turn out. He went to Strongsville, like John did for one year I believe, and I never saw him play unless I did when they played Glenville when Teddy played but I don't remember him. John Kerr makes football plays and he's going scratch and fight and do everything he can to be on the field. But I'm also a huge Ross Homan fan and he's a football player too. Put it this way...I also like Freeman a whole lot but I will not be surprised if Homan passes either Kerr or Freeman on the depth chart at some point this year. And yes I like that Beanie guy also. I think I might have mentioned that once or twice before. And thanks for the kind words.

hammbone1928 (Jul 14, 2006 12:07:25 PM)
A two parter no 1 Major Wright S from Fl. Chris Carter his coach & Nate Salley from his school. plus he made a visit. what do you think ? 2.Of all the offers to CB's ( JT does this every yr.) not counting the ones in Mich. Vance Cuff has visited, from Ga. Art Evans from that tiny school in Fl .Donovan Warren from the same school as Ken Yon Rambo Caif & Marcus Gilcrest

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:07:25 PM)
Major Wright is one of the players I was having a conversation with with one of my guys prior to the chat today. I hear that there's definitely some mutual interest going on. I met one of his assistant coaches down in San Antonio this year and I think I need to give him a call. Wright was definitely one guy this coach mentioned to me. I even have his name written down on my notebook. I'll have to give that a coach sometime this week. I'll have to pass on the CBs you mentioned. I would have nothing important to say about them. I can say that I still think OSU has a shot with Allen.

JohnnyBuckeye (Jul 14, 2006 12:11:40 PM)
Gary, I live in Columbus. What 3-4 kids would you go see, if you were me, this upcoming year in Central Ohio?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:11:40 PM)
I really have to think about this for a second...I guess one of the obvious ones would be Jeremiah and also D'Andrea. Those would be the two that I would make sure I see. I'm going to throw out Josh Anderson from Marion-Franklin High School as a player I would definitely go see. You're going to really like this kid. That's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Guest (Jul 14, 2006 12:15:16 PM)
Hello Gary, sorry I am late to the chat. Don't know if this question has been posed but I would like to know which coach you would rather be in September; Coach Tressel with a young defense (though he always has good D's) or Mack Brown with a rookie QB starting in the second game of his career playing OSU in a nationally televised night game?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:15:16 PM)
Hi OSUBUCGUY... That's a no-brainer for me. OSU is always going to be good on defense under JT that's one of his basic staples...even if it's a young crew like this year. Other than the game being in Austin, I like everything else about OSU's chances to gain a victory against the Horns.

hammbone1928 (Jul 14, 2006 12:18:08 PM)
I was referring to Solomon Thomas from West Chester who has been offered & his Dad has been talking about GT Thanks

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:18:08 PM)
I thought you meant Solomon but then I thought the question said something about if he were to be offered...so I apologize for getting that mixed up. I heard originally that NC State and VMI were viable choices for Thomas so I'm certain that still is the case. I am guessing OSU has some work to do with Thomas but they certainly could get it done. I don't see this being any type of conventional situation here however.

touchdownron (Jul 14, 2006 12:19:39 PM)
Gary what are you hearing out of Lawrence Wilson out of camp

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:19:39 PM)
Hi touchdownron I hear that he is ready to shine. I've been waiting for this for a long time. Smile! I still consider Wilson a bonus because OSU lost him once to ND but got him back and I couldn't be happier about that.

Hicks74 (Jul 14, 2006 12:23:53 PM)
Gary - What do you think of Blankeship ? Only two real big offers ? What do the Bucks see ?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:23:53 PM)
They saw something early and offered Hicks. I'm not really sure myself but I would like to see him play this year. I've gotten mixed reports on him from people who have seen him play.

touchdownron (Jul 14, 2006 12:24:23 PM)
With the depth at DE that OSU has do you see Robert Rose in the rotation

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:24:23 PM)

Hicks74 (Jul 14, 2006 12:26:47 PM)
Gary, Would Solomon Thomas commit early if offered. Is it better to take a bird in hand in that case than to put all eggs in the Ben Martin basket. Are they THAT far apart ?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:26:48 PM)
Yes but I'm not certain that Thomas is a bird in the hand. That being said, I think Martin is one of those players that you put a lot of eggs in his basket. He's a difference maker. I hope Ohio State is recruiting both of these two guys independently of one another.

eyeofbuck (Jul 14, 2006 12:27:54 PM)
Nic Claytor. where does he end up?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:27:54 PM)
I got a great vibe from him on OSU when I saw him and his dad in person at OSU's camp so I'll say Ohio State.

Guest (Jul 14, 2006 12:32:28 PM)
Gary, how do you think that the return game is going to play out this year? Obviously Teddy will be affective, but do you think we continue to go with tandem punt returners and if so who (Gonzo, Malcom, Small?). Who is back on kickffs with TGII?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:32:28 PM)
StandardBuck asks about the return game...I would actually like to see Jamario O'Neal back on some punts with Teddy. He was pretty darn good at it in high school. Kickoffs...maybe Anderson Russell could be included there. The good thing is that there a lot of quality athletes to choose from and as long as TGII is one of them back for punts or kickoffs, I'm happy about that.

Guest (Jul 14, 2006 12:34:00 PM)
who starts at OL at the end of the year?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:34:00 PM)
Ohs asks about the starting offensive line at the end of the year. Call me crazy but I'll say Boone, Schafer, Datish, Downing and Barton or Boone, Datish, Cordle, Downing and Barton.

Piquabuck (Jul 14, 2006 12:35:23 PM)
Gary, are you still planning on attending Piqua's opening game? If so, I would like to invite you to the local OSU hangout for an adultr beverage and some good ole OSU football chat.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:35:23 PM)
Yes but that's in week two...their home opener and I would be open to such an invitation minus the adult beverage. I don't drink on game days! Sorry! Thanks for the offer. Smile!

Hicks74 (Jul 14, 2006 12:37:55 PM)
Your feeling on Zach Slagle (Canton McKinley) as a walk-on ? Big kid who played in the Big 33 game..325 lbs ? A little more exciting than some of the mediocre St. Iggy kids that walked on at OSU although Kne did ok in the end.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:37:55 PM)
I liked him at the Big 33. I believe if he had another two inches on him that he might be a top offensive line recruit. He looked very solid to me and he seemed to be a great kid. I know Brian Cross, his coach, spoke highly of him during the season. I think he could possibly contribute at some point down the road.

kidblues (Jul 14, 2006 12:41:58 PM)
As always, great job Gary ( and the boys!)....I read on Steve's chat yesterday that maybe the bucks would look to go with a 3-4 because we're so loaded - it seems - at the lb position - do you see that ever happening? Also, how much credit should the def line get all these years that we're turning out such great lbs?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:41:58 PM)
Hi kidblues... I can see some version of that happening based on the personnel at LB but I don't see that conversion as the primary defense. They have so many quality prospects when you consider Grant and Terry and even Gibson. Wow! That's one reason why I'm not really worried about the defense...other then getting beat vertically. That's where TGII needs to be inserted so there's no immediate drop off in the skill level.

Hicks74 (Jul 14, 2006 12:44:13 PM)
With the lack of DT's after this year (losing Penton, Pitcock and Patterson) would it be wise to get Larimore's feet a little wet in the right instances so we have some game ready people there next year ? (Abdallah/Denlinger/Larimore) What about Garnier ??

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:44:13 PM)
I sort of like all of the DT's on the roster. I think Denlinger could be the biggest surprise of them all. I would actually prefer they redshirt Larimore if possible this year unless he's just a dominant player. But I think Penton and Denlinger should give the line four solid tackles at a minimum.

eyeofbuck (Jul 14, 2006 12:44:51 PM)
free board rumor says Small could be a Hawkeye soon. Tell me this is the total malarky i suspect it is.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:44:51 PM)
Wow! Is this a trick question!

Guest (Jul 14, 2006 12:45:34 PM)
is Grant going to be a factor at LB?

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:45:34 PM)
Ohs asks about Grant at LB...just another stud on the roster. I certainly think he'll be on the field in some capacity this year.

touchdownron (Jul 14, 2006 12:47:44 PM)

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:47:44 PM)
As good as can be touchdownron. I'll be making my annual preseason pilgrimage to Glenville as soon as two-a-days get underway...if not sooner.

touchdownron (Jul 14, 2006 12:49:50 PM)
Gary Thad Gibson looked like a beast at the Big 33 game as well. Does he see the field this year

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:49:50 PM)
I love Gibson's game. I can see him running down the field on kickoffs in week one. He's certainly a player and the cream rises to the top. So I hope to see him out there at some point.

GaryHousteau (Jul 14, 2006 12:52:26 PM)
Folks I have to call it a wrap for now. That was a fun and fast moving two hours and I appreciate your participation. It's a honor and privilege to field questions from you guys every week. But I appreciate your time and look forward to doing this again next time. Have a great weekend and Go Bucks!
