Small is in,correct?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 9:51:45 AM)
Small is in. Next time you see Gene Smith go up and give him a hug.
5uper8ucks (Jul 17, 2006 9:51:50 AM)
Is there an over/under for the Ohio State-Texas game as yet?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 9:52:40 AM)
I have not seen it...but I will say 49 1/2 and I will take the over....
scribeohio (Jul 17, 2006 9:52:45 AM)
Nevada, can you give us a run down on conditioning under Lichter? Thanks
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 9:54:29 AM)
Lichter is really putting his mark on the conditioning program in a hurry. If the old program was charachterized by strength and power--the new would have to be referred to as speed and explosion--I guess the proof will be in the pudding--as I thought our strenght and conditioning has been outstanding in recent years....
DoctorSJ (Jul 17, 2006 9:54:36 AM)
Are there any present plans to utilize the fullback more this year than in the recent past with the likes of Johnson, White and Olson?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 9:56:36 AM)
I think White has been an unsung hero of this offense--this young man just does all the little things you want(stays with blocks, catches the ball, never misses assignments, etc..) I would expect more of the same this year.....Johnson will be in more power sets..Olson will redshirt(more than likely)
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 9:56:50 AM)
NB: This is my first chat, althought I read them all the time! Thanks. Do we have a serious chance at landing any of the top blue chip recruits: O'Dowd, Ronald Johnson, Anthony Davis, Martin?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 9:58:04 AM)
We have a real shot at Martin and ODowd....and we have an outside shot at Johnson and Davis.......but there will be a TON of new guys come on the radar between now and signing day---happens every year.......
kleintime16 (Jul 17, 2006 9:58:33 AM)
I read on SI.com that something like 10 of the recruits USF signed will be ineligible to play. really makes you think we got something good here.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:00:12 AM)
I stated last December that we would finish Top 5 nationally in terms of quality......after we now have 20 out of 20 guys enrolled--I would dare say we have solidified that position.....tougher academic standards seem draconian some times---but in the end it will all pay off......
SteveHelwagen (Jul 17, 2006 10:00:59 AM)
Well said, I was flipping through some pages that will be in the 06 media guide and, hate it as you might, OSU's national rankings academically are on a steady rise. Good stuff.
DoctorSJ (Jul 17, 2006 10:01:11 AM)
What are your expectations regarding the offensive line recruiting this year? Any in-state linemen get taken this year?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:03:26 AM)
the guy I would keep an eye on in state is Jeff Spikes....but once the HS season starts other names will undoubtedly emerge....I think overall we take three(or maybe only two) this year...and then get ready for a monster 2008....
ohs (Jul 17, 2006 10:03:59 AM)
sounds like martin liked the visit, do we get him and clifford?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:04:32 AM)
I feel stronger about Clifford than I do about Martin--but yes, I think we get them both....
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:04:37 AM)
Any update on the Joseph Barksdale situation? Seems like we have to be the perfect fit for this kid.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:05:09 AM)
we are in very very very good shape with Barksdale....we have to be considered "odds on" here......
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:06:15 AM)
Devon Torrence ours before the football season starts?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:06:34 AM)
he is already ours......
edbuck51 (Jul 17, 2006 10:06:40 AM)
What are your thoughts regarding Troy Smith and the NFL?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:08:10 AM)
I think Troy Smith will have a long NFL career ahead of him, if he continues to devote himself to the study of the game(which he is doing now--he is a film junkie now) He has all the physical tools--he just has to learn more about really being a quarterback--as he is realtively new to the position....
Nutz4Bucks (Jul 17, 2006 10:08:22 AM)
Any word on Alex Boone being eligible this year after his previous off-field issue? He seems to be a key component for our offensive line, and I'm not sure how we'd fare without his protection/blocking by moving people around to fill the vacancy.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:10:36 AM)
Alex Boone is eligible and will be an integral part of the line this fall. He is a fine young man, that actually looks slim at 315+ lbs(he is just a massive kid)....but no worries on Boone...and the "extra" physical training he is getting is keeping him in great shape...haha
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:11:27 AM)
Once a recruit like Boom verbals to OSU does that mean we take back offers from other running backs if we no longer need any in this class? How does that work?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:13:41 AM)
offers are "pulled back" all the time--its the nature of the business---in this particular case, they are still looking for one more back(Hughes, etc...)..but this happens all the time...
ohs (Jul 17, 2006 10:14:13 AM)
are Boom and particularly the WR from Toledo stretches or did they deserve offers?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:16:21 AM)
you don't "stretch" in July....period...ever......with scholarships as limited as they are, it would be foolish to offer anyone you aren't completely sold on.....Boom and Dane are, in staff's opinion, terrific "gets" for tOSU....and everyone, to a person, who has seen these guys up close and personal---agree.......
JimC (Jul 17, 2006 10:16:41 AM)
Hi Nevada, Is there any additional feedback about Ben's visit. Why didn't his mom come?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:19:04 AM)
I have no idea if Mom came, or not...the message I received was "Visit went great....Ben saw EVERYTHING and EVERYBODY he needed to......we are in fine shape with this quality young man.." JT will win over mom. Just a matter of time. Ask yourself, if you were the parent of a recruit---wouldn't you want your son to play for JT?? I mean, what's not to like????
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:19:14 AM)
I hear down here in Georgia that this Clayton kid can play football. Any word on when/if he commits?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:20:48 AM)
I'm not as certain about Claytor.....dad is going to need to do some work for us here...real real good player----it will be a LONG time between now and signing day with this young man.....
yo (Jul 17, 2006 10:21:16 AM)
I know blankenship has to been to camp a few time and the staff likes him, which is good enough fo rme..but why do you think the only offers he has in us, pitt and temple?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:23:20 AM)
Evan has only camped at Pitt and OSU(where he was the offensive line MVP last year)---staff has seen this guy a TON(including last month at camp)--interviewed him, coaches, teammates----seen miles of film on him--and they LOVE him...not sure why he hasn't got more offers---
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:23:53 AM)
I haven't heard enough about Andre Amos. He seemed like such a stud when he came to OSU. Does he get on the field this year?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:25:13 AM)
Amos needs to get stronger...but he will see the field this year----but there is just lots of competition--and from some spectacular athletes.....
ohs (Jul 17, 2006 10:25:46 AM)
Which OL and DT do you think we'll definitely get this year? are we not going to offer any instate OL?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:28:45 AM)
The only OL or DT that I think we "definitely" get this year will be Barksdale..but we are in on Brent , Jeremiah, etc... and are sure to add to that list.....and on the OLine side, I just think we will be very selective---I think we get Blankenship, ODowd and one other.......
edbuck51 (Jul 17, 2006 10:29:01 AM)
Who is going to be the strongest Buckeye this season? They should give this guy the Mike Kudla award.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:29:49 AM)
Tyler Whaley..hands down the strongest guy...
edbuck51 (Jul 17, 2006 10:30:05 AM)
Besides the obvious Troy Smith, who do you see stepping up as the leaders of the team this year? It always seems like you need true leaders to have truly great seasons.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:31:31 AM)
I think Jay Richardson is poised for a big senior season...Datish will lead on the offensive line...Roy Hall will lead the receiving corps......we need these guys to step up--as we lost a ton of experience last year....
MacAuley (Jul 17, 2006 10:31:33 AM)
Your predictions for Team Captains?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:32:29 AM)
Smith and Datish Pitcock and Patterson
ohs (Jul 17, 2006 10:32:40 AM)
how do 08 and particularly 09 look in Ohio? 09 seems so critical as we have 26+ scholarships that year? thanks.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:34:49 AM)
I'm not as versed on 09 recruiting...08 is shaping up to be the year of the offensive lineman....a very very wise guru has stated that he believes that OSU will get "the finest group of OLine recruits in OSU history in 2008"-----I guess we will see.....
cliffosu (Jul 17, 2006 10:34:58 AM)
Does it potentially hurt our defensive recruiting if our young defense comes together and is just filthy good this year. Do potential recruits see this and think no playing time is in the near future.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:36:32 AM)
competition is everywhere...anyone scared off by the depth chart is probabaly not someone you want in your program.....USC keeps stockpiling---why shouldn't we?? we have the best coaches, fans and facilities in the world..we should always compete for the best players....
bobcat84 (Jul 17, 2006 10:36:55 AM)
Crystall ball- not including Dane S. , what other wrs do you see in this class?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:38:59 AM)
I'll go with Hankerson and Troupe and call it a day......
TheKaiser21 (Jul 17, 2006 10:39:08 AM)
Are these the biggest fall practices in recent memory(I know all practices heading into the season are important, but don't remember when so much talent was competing for open spots). So many jobs are up for grabs on defense, and we come out of the gate with Texas, Iowa, and PSU in the 1st half of the season.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:40:21 AM)
I'm so excited about fall practice---this is going to be "show time" for so many young guys----I know the players are excited as well....
BuckeyeBK (Jul 17, 2006 10:40:34 AM)
How much of an impact is the renovation to the WHAC helping recruiting?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:42:07 AM)
HUGE....once its finished it will be the "crown jewel" in our recruiting...you all need to see this place to appreciate it----it is very very very impressive to recruits----wait until its no longer drawings, and is actually done....
edbuck51 (Jul 17, 2006 10:42:15 AM)
51 guests on the chat today. Nevada, you are more popular than Morgana at a wet T-shirt contest. To what do you attribute your popularity?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:42:51 AM)
the free drinks and hot chicks I keep setting you guys up with at CroBar.....
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:43:15 AM)
I know everyone seems to be singing the praises of Dane Sanzenbacher but I just don't see it. How can you compare him to Gonzalez when their speed is not the same?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:44:48 AM)
I've never compared him to Tony G(other than the fact that they are both "white")...Dane is a big play guy, that runs precise routes, is very intelligent, deceptively fast and handles pressure extremely well----other than that, he is not very good....LOL.....
TheKaiser21 (Jul 17, 2006 10:45:35 AM)
Could you compare Dane to a step slower Holmes? Body control, Precise Routes and great hands?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:47:33 AM)
he is all those things and more....check his track times--this kid is not "slow"---people just get too hung up on a published 40 time.......this kid is a player....remember, JULY offer--camp offer---keep chanting that mantra....
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:47:53 AM)
Is Antonio Jeremiah the real deal? It seems like he has the tools? How would you compare him to Walter Dublin?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:49:10 AM)
Jeremiah is the real deal--strong kid---stronger than Dublin(just not as fast)....I think he ends up as part of this class....
ohs (Jul 17, 2006 10:49:23 AM)
who starts at OL for Mich game?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:49:53 AM)
Boone, Rehring, Datish, Downing, and Barton
SteveHelwagen (Jul 17, 2006 10:50:05 AM)
That's a pretty good group.

When the Michigan game kicks off at 3:30 pm (yeah!!!!) who starts for OSU at the 3 LB spots, 2 CB spots and 2 Safety spots? Thx.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:52:18 AM)
LB's will be Homan, Laurinaitis, and Freeman Corners will be Washington and Jenkins and Safeties will be ONeal and Patterson....
edbuck51 (Jul 17, 2006 10:52:30 AM)
Do you have a feel for how the QB rotation might be in '07? I know it's early, but you must have a guess?
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:54:16 AM)
that is sooo speculative, but I like Henton---a LOT--but I'm hesitant to bet against guys that have a couple of years in the system---so I will do it anyway..I say it goes Henton, Shoenhoft, Boeckman
chuangtsu7 (Jul 17, 2006 10:54:28 AM)
Any update on Doug Worthington or Ryan Williams? I would love to see Worthington lining up at DT. Any chance this year? I see Lawrence Wilson, Denlinger, Worthington, and Rose (that doesn't even include Ben Martin!).
SteveHelwagen (Jul 17, 2006 10:55:21 AM)
We are winding down, just a few more minutes. If we didn't answer your exact question, chances are we had one similar. Check the transcript later today.
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:55:46 AM)
Worthington and Williams are both progressing nicely on their rehabs....but I think they both sit out this year and come back strong next season---so much depth right now, no need to rush them back...
jd (Jul 17, 2006 10:55:53 AM)
Nevada, if there is one area on this year's team that looks to be "high risk", it appears to be the secondary. Is the staff confident that the young guys (O'neal, Russell, Patterson, Coleman, Amos, etc) will step up and become Big10 quality players THIS year ???
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:57:23 AM)
they better--or it will be a LONG season.....LOL......I think we will undoubtedly be more "athletic" back there than we have ever been---how will they handle the pressure when the bullets start flying??? that is anyone's guess...but I know staff is quietly confident that they can get the job done...
Folanator (Jul 17, 2006 10:57:25 AM)
Sup NV. Are the players planning on doing anything special for Tyler durring the season? Also, all the coaches recovering from their health issues?
SteveHelwagen (Jul 17, 2006 10:57:30 AM)
Great questions ...
nevadabuck (Jul 17, 2006 10:59:31 AM)
I 've heard a couple of plans--not sure which one is being implimented--but they ARE doing something for Tyson.....staff health issues is something that I stay away from asking--just too personal---lets just all say a prayer that everyone is ok.....
SteveHelwagen (Jul 17, 2006 10:59:34 AM)
I'm sure a lot of people would think it would be nice if they won the NC in his honor. Last question here ...
