Haden Wants To See More

Maryland prospect Joe Haden has already been all over the U.S. this summer checking out college campuses, visiting Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Virginia. But the blue-chipper is only getting started. We caught up with him for the rest of his summer plans and thoughts on recruiting.

He's been to Tennessee, Pittsburgh and Virginia and is scheduled to visit Florida, but that's not enough for Joe Haden.

The 5-11 195-pound quarterback from Fort Washington (Md.) Friendly who projects to play receiver at the college level is still hoping to do more before the summer is over.

"I'm planning to go up to go to Florida on the 21st (of July)," he said Sunday evening. "Ohio State – that's a visit I would really like to make later this summer. I want to see what it's like there. And I would also like to see Michigan."

Haden, who reports a 2.7 GPA, 870 SAT and 40 scholarship offers, passed for 1,959 yards, 22 touchdowns and just five interceptions last season as a junior. He also rushed for 478 yards and 6 touchdowns.

However, colleges love his speed and versatility and Haden is planning to play as a wide receiver next season as a freshman. He's got an impressive list of schools to choose where he hones his craft.

"I'm looking at Florida, Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Tennessee, Michigan and Rutgers," Haden noted. "There are a lot of other schools but those are the ones I like most."

Haden says he has been to Virginia and was just there again recently for a team 7-on-7 tournament. He's also been to Pittsburgh.

The Tennessee visit came earlier this summer.

"I was there for the Senior Day Team Camp," he explained. "I didn't participate in the drills but I got to meet all of the coaches and take a tour of the campus.

"It was a nice visit," Haden added. "I really liked Neyland Statidum. That was nice. It was good to talk to the receivers coach, Coach (Trooper) Taylor. Since schools are recruiting me as a receiver I've been talking to those coaches."

Tennessee's receiver coach isn't the only one recruiting Haden.

He's also heard a lot from Florida and receiver coach Billy Gonzales. Haden talked about Florida head coach Urban Meyer as well as his upcoming visit.

"I know they (Florida) lose four receivers and that's where I come in," he explained. "Coach Gonzales said if I were to come in early and work hard that I would have a chance to play. Coach Meyer and Coach Gonzales have been recruiting me.

"I have always liked Florida since I was young so it will be nice to see the campus," Haden added.

After Florida, the next stop on Haden's itinerary might be to Columbus to see the Buckeyes.

Like Florida, Haden says he gets a good vibe with Ohio State.

"That's another team I've liked since I was young," he says of the Buckeyes. "I don't know a lot about them right now but they seem like everything you would want in a football program.

"Coach (Luke) Fickell and Coach (Tim) Beckman have been text messaging me for Ohio State," he added. "They called me back when the coaches were allowed to call and I sat down and had a good conversation with them. They seem really down to earth."

Haden is hoping to visit Ohio State sometime in August before his season starts. If he doesn't make it, he said there's a good chance he will try to head up in the fall. Likewise, he is also hoping to visit Michigan, although he added he's not sure if there will be time before the season.

He talked about what he's looking for in a program.

"I just want a good relationship with the coaches, a chance to play and I want to go play for a good program that I feel comfortable at," Haden concluded. "Those are the most important things."
