Housteau Chat Archive: August 3

Bucknuts staffer Gary Housteau dropped by members-only chat today to discuss OSU football and recruiting with subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 11:50:23 AM)
Footballishere...today's password just about says it all. Are we ready for some football?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 11:51:36 AM)
I started my preseason yesterday with a trip to Glenville (shocking) and St. Edward. I would say both teams have a chance to play again in the Regional final in a rematch of last year's game which Ed's won of course.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 11:55:20 AM)
Barksdale... how are we losing this guy! He can possibly come in and start next year as a true freshmen!

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 11:55:20 AM)
Hi Phillybuck...I have to admit after talking to him the other night that I'm not very confident about OSU's chances. I likened my interview with him that night to one I had with Rico McCoy a couple of years back. Rico was gung ho Ohio State at one point, he would always give me positive reasons why he liked Ohio State and then all of the sudden after he visited Tennessee, his voice and demeanor changed drastically on the telephone and you could just tell it didn't look good from that point on for Ohio State. I got the same eerie vibe from Barksdale a couple of nights ago with Texas. I'll try to stay in close contact with Barksdale but right now I'm not confident. Which of course is a total 180 degree shift for me with him.

ohs (Aug 3, 2006 11:56:36 AM)
who is next commit?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 11:56:36 AM)
Hi ohs...let's hope it's Thomas...that would be nice wouldn't it? Steve and I will see him play at the Crosstown Chili Classic at the end of the month so hopefully he will be a Buckeye by then. If not we will certainly see where he stands at that time.

bb1 (Aug 3, 2006 11:58:19 AM)
w/ all the somewhat negative news on the recruiting front, can you give us some good news somewhere?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 11:58:20 AM)
Hi bb1...sure I think OSU is in really good shape with a young man by the name of James Scott a defensive back from Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, Florida. That's a relatively new name for OSU fans and he's more than interested in Ohio State from what I've been told. Smile!

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:01:24 PM)
How do you rank Barksdale, Jeremiah, and Brent? Who do the Buckeyes get?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:01:24 PM)
Hi Philly Buck...I would rank then in the order you listed only because I've seen the first two in person and haven't seen Brent. I think Barksdale has successfully crafted an image of him being the number one defensive tackle in the country and now he's fully engulfed in that image. I've heard good and bad things about Jeremiah but he looks really good in person at camp. Brent is really an unknown commodity to me but I like what I read about the kid.

mp23 (Aug 3, 2006 12:04:59 PM)
Im not sure you know and im sure it's something no one wants to think about, but what is the contingency plan if coach daniels can not continue due to health reasons. Do we make due or actually bring somone else in? It seems that everyone has a lot of responsibility as it is.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:04:59 PM)
Hi mp23 ... I'm sure JT has a contingency plan for his contingency plan. This guy is maybe the most thorough person in America. I think his recruiting duties have already been not reassigned but co-oped, for a lack of a better word, by other members of the staff. Someone has to really keep those guys connected to OSU. JT sort of works in the same area with Daniels on offense so there isn't a drastic need to add someone to the staff for that reason alone. I'm sure JT is prepared for everything and if he needs additional support on the staff he'll get it. I think OSU just makes due for now. That's just an opinion.

Guest (Aug 3, 2006 12:10:36 PM)
Hi Gary, is this the year for Glenville to get over the hump and take home the sausage.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:10:36 PM)
thegreatcornholio...has to be one of the all-time best chat names...wants to talk about winning the whole sausage! You sound like Mike Trivisanno... a Cleveland radio talk show host... when you talk about winning the sausage. Boy have they assembled a formidable crew at Glenville but there will be some initial growing pains as all this talent tries to gel together in a short period of time. I think Ed's is the team to beat, no disrespect to Massillon intended. Ed's has a whole lot of firepower to reckon with. They're a solid team but they also have a difficult schedule. I think Glenville has their most overall talent this year but other than Hines they're lacking in the dominant star performer of years past. I think people will be surprised to see how good they are this year because they really have a lot of good football players and they have tremendous size as well. They will look good coming off the bus and on the field. Whether they have enough to knock of Ed's in week 13...right now I say no but I reserve the right to address that prediction later in the year.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:11:55 PM)
Eugene Clifford a Buckeye in the end? Before the season ends?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:11:55 PM)
I think yes PhillyBuck and he would certainly be a nice person to be the next to commit as someone asked me a few questions back. Before the season ends? ... I sure hope so...I was hoping it would be before the season begins.

Guest (Aug 3, 2006 12:15:37 PM)
Who is the next star to come from Glenville?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:15:37 PM)
Buck76 asks who the next star to come from Glenville is...this year it's Jermale Hines. He's the real deal folks and when he quits playing basketball and devotes himself strictly to football after high school, he can become a monster linebacker. Great speed, great instincts, and he loves contact. After him...I'll go with Shawntel Rowell and Cordale Scott right now. I saw Rowell yesterday and he's actually lost about 20 pounds since the winter and he looks pretty good. He's no small man by any stretch but he looks to be in good shape for his size. The year after that, Marcus Hall, will be one of the top offensive lineman around.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:15:56 PM)
Who is the next recruit to commit to our Buckeyes?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:15:56 PM)
Thomas or Clifford!

Guest (Aug 3, 2006 12:18:15 PM)
in your opinion can rob rose crack the starting line up at some point this season? i think he will give us five sacks or more this season.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:18:15 PM)
Skeelo asks about Rob Rose...this kid will see the field in some way some how. I too think he can be a pass rushing force right out of the blocks. But he has to be patient and learn the postion because he can't freelance like he could in high school and get away with it. I don't know if he can crack the starting lineup at some point this year but I'm sure we'll see number 9 rushing the passer at some point this year. He'll probably be on special teams from week one on.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:21:17 PM)
NevadaBuck told me that Torrence was ours.... so when exactly is that going to be?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:21:18 PM)
Torrence is/will be a Buckeye! I can't speak for him because Torrence is not someone that I have any communication with but I've been told that he wants to make a couple of visits, check out a few good college games at other campuses and then he'll commit. I'm looking forward to Dover playing Canton South in week one. I've been told by everyone that Dover has zero chance against the Torrence brothers and Canton South so I want to see first-hand how that plays out. That's a Thursday night game in Dover. Perci Garner and Dan Ifft against Devon Torrence! Shaaa-wing!

ohs (Aug 3, 2006 12:25:00 PM)
any OL updates? are person and kyle going to contribute? and whats wrong with cordle?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:25:00 PM)
I don't see person or mitchum making huge contributions this year but they will able bodies in the two-deep rotation and should be viable candidates to try to earn a starting spot next year on the O-line. That's what depth is for. On a good offensive line, unless you're a bona fide star, you might only have one or two years to play. Depth is the key and these guys give you quality depth for now. As far as cordle is concerned? I don't know what's wrong with Cordle? Did something happen? The last I knew he was going to camp to win the starting center job if he's able to. If not he'll be a quality backup for Datish.

bb1 (Aug 3, 2006 12:26:19 PM)
are you guys going to throw another bucknuts tailgate at sometime?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:26:19 PM)
I would hope so bb1...last year's mega tailgate against Texas was off the hook as the younger generation might say. I'm all for it. But that's something that Steve and Mr. Bucknuts have to determine.

DoctorSJ (Aug 3, 2006 12:30:51 PM)
Looking ahead - check with your crystal ball Gary and tell us - how many lineman (offensive) do we take NEXT year and name at least two of them (although we won't hold you to it.....right!). Thanks!!

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:30:51 PM)
Hi DoctorSJ...the way it sounds like for next year, Ohio State is in great shape with Michael Adams from Coffman High School...very good shape. Zerbie Sanders from Northmont is also a likely candidate to come to Ohio State. This kid looked great at OSU's camp. I'm hearing a lot of good things about the Brewster kid from Florida...he loves the bucks as does J.B. Shugarts from Texas...I'll take any combination of any of those four and call it a day.

marksgforce (Aug 3, 2006 12:33:03 PM)
Daniels? Bollman? I believe in the efficacy of strong leadership ... What is JT doing to counteract the loss of man-hours in preparation for the season -- and recruiting?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:33:03 PM)
I can assure you that JT has got hard-working graduate assistants and under studys working for him that are capable of picking up any slack in the interim with regards to Coach Daniels. Just remember that JT is always two-steps ahead of everyone else. Everyone!

marksgforce (Aug 3, 2006 12:34:00 PM)
Let's assume that Ray Small is going to need a "big brother" mentor-type in the academic arena ... Any talk of that from Team-Glenville? Any player seem likely to take on that mantle?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:34:00 PM)
Yes...Troy Smith. Enough said.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:37:43 PM)
Hartline, Small, Robiskie, Dukes, who is our biggest play maker NEXT year?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:37:43 PM)
Gonzo is back for his senior year first and foremost. And then I might like order of the names you listed as far as the next biggest play makers. Hartline, Small, Robiskie and Dukes. I would hope to see Devon Lyons in the mix somewhere also.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:38:16 PM)
If Pittman has the same level of success this year as he did last year does he stick around or head to the NFL?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:38:16 PM)
Show me the money! If it's at all possible to get a good paycheck...gone!

marksgforce (Aug 3, 2006 12:39:52 PM)
The annual question we already (probably) know the answer to ... Will any practices be open to public? the media?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:39:52 PM)
On a limited basis...like the first 20 minutes of practice when nothing is going on. One of the scrimmages are open to the media but there are no cameras or cell phones allowed. So very limited is the best description of media access to practice. Public...even less if any at all.

Hicks74 (Aug 3, 2006 12:41:47 PM)
Hi Gary - Should OSU be safeguarding themselves and offer Jeremiah early ? Barksdale has me concerned. Is it an academic issue there ? I would think we need at least 2 DT's

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:41:47 PM)
I agree with you Hicks but for some reason they're holding back on Jeremiah. I've heard of one potential reason why but I'm really not privy to their reasoning. And I don't really know if his academic situation is holding him back or not to be honest with you. I would hope he's on their short list because I too am concerned about Barksdale.

Hicks74 (Aug 3, 2006 12:43:16 PM)
Gary, what is the deal with Sirjo Welch and Underwood ? They are rarely mentioned anymore.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:43:16 PM)
I was informed a while back they would no longer be on the team and neither of them are on the current OSU roster right now. I would say that it's safe to say they are both gone.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:44:35 PM)
Who gets the majority of time on the field this year at TE? Is there any chance that Ballard can see some action. He is huge!

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:44:35 PM)
I think OSU is pretty set with Frost, Nicol and Smith at tight end for now! Ballard and Andy Miller are likely redshirts this year.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:45:22 PM)
Why can't Kurt Coleman see the field this year? I think he was further along than Jenkins was last year.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:45:22 PM)
I think Coleman potentiall can and will philly buck but I disagree with your second statement.

Hicks74 (Aug 3, 2006 12:49:11 PM)
Speaking of possible late bloomers like Person and Mitchum, I remember putting a big (?) on Datish and was really surprised the last couple of years. Still not excited with Schaefer on the offensive side. He looked overmatched when I watched him,

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:49:11 PM)
I am in agreement with Hicks on Datish and Doug is from my neck of the woods. He has really come one and his versatility is probably his most important asset. What a solid football player Datish has become. The same thinking can still apply for Person and Mitchum and Skinner. I think Skinner could be the next to surprise. Schafer is a fifth-year senior so it's always good to have someone capable like that around. He could end up starting at left guard this year!

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:52:21 PM)
Who did you like better before the injury, Doug Worthington (ranked #3) or Lawrence Wilson (#29)?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:52:22 PM)
Tough question Pilly...I'm just going to go with Wilson just because I was more familiar with him. Although I saw Worthington play in high school against St. Ignatius and I was very impressed with what I saw. I think Wilson obviously got off to a faster start at OSU than Worthington did...prior to the injury. I expect a big year from Wilson. He needs to become the same quality player on the field this year that people rave about the way he is in practice. This is the year for Wilson to take a big step forward.

am (Aug 3, 2006 12:54:23 PM)
What has happened with Mike Kudla?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:54:24 PM)
Hi am ...as far as I know Kudla is plugging away over at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, Pa. trying to earn a spot on the Steelers roster. It pains me to have to root for OSU guys like Holmes and Kudla in Pittsburgh...but in Kudla's case that's an easy thing to do. Kudla and his family are great people.

Guest (Aug 3, 2006 12:57:07 PM)
Hey Gary - Did you listen to Steves pod cast with Texas? He was really downplaying our D. Is he sandbagging or do you think there is some real concern there? I think most of our new starters would have been starting for 9-10 other teams in the big 10 last year!

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:57:07 PM)
Question from mckbuckeye before he departed...I didn't hear Steve's pod cast so I don't know what was said. Sure I think there is a lot of concern there until the new guys get the actually get the reps under their belts. I like the talent at the position and that's a good thing. They can't become good as a unit until they get to do it on the field. The good thing is if there are breakdowns on the defense ... the offense is good enough to make up for any of their mistakes! I'm confident either way.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 12:59:45 PM)
I just moved from Georgia this month, and boy let me tell you that a lot of people love this Clayton kid. Are we still in good shape? I can't see us getting him out of SEC land.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 12:59:45 PM)
I like Claytor as well Philly. My initial impressions of him were positive and I felt that him and father really liked their situation with Ohio State. But that was back in early June. I believe that OSU is still in good shape with Claytor and I think there's still a good chance that he could become a Buckeye. Having his father in the Toledo area certainly helps.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 1:00:40 PM)
Grades the only hold up for Peake?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:00:40 PM)
I would certainly think that wold be the case. I really C.J.Peake.

bb1 (Aug 3, 2006 1:02:30 PM)
who're the glenville players next year?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:02:30 PM)
They have a ton of good prospects next year...Shaq Rowell, Cordale Scott, Dawawn Whitner, Toriel Gibson and Winston Etheridge are a some of the more obvious ones right now.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 1:03:51 PM)
Who gets to the QB the most this year for the Bucks? Wilson? Pitcock? Richardson?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:03:51 PM)
I sure hope it's Wilson! I'm hoping that Richardson plays big also. Pitcock and Patterson will give line fits but I'm not sure if they can get to the QB as much as the outside guys.

ohs (Aug 3, 2006 1:04:33 PM)
Things look better with Martin I think, no?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:04:33 PM)
I sure hope so but I still don't know what to believe to be honest with you. I can't wait to see him play in week one though.

marksgforce (Aug 3, 2006 1:07:26 PM)
Last spring it was reported that JT and MoC were talking again and that JT was advising and encouraging him ... is MoC back in isolation mode? Any past-positives helping him? Thom Daniels? Jim Brown? (just kidding on the last one ...)

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:07:26 PM)
Nobody that I know is real sure what Reecie is up to these days. I, for one, truly feel sorry for him. I thought his future was a sure thing at one point and I'm certain he did too. It's really sad. I hope to be able to chat with him at some time in the future. I don't know if anybody can protect from himself. He has consistently made bad decisions. And he's making another one with this new league he's getting involved in. A huge one!

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 1:10:50 PM)
When do we see Jamario O'Neal perform up to his potential? I think we should put him and Russell on the field with Jenkins and either Amos or Coleman. That is not only an exciting group, it is a group that should produce more turnovers than last year's group.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:10:50 PM)
I'm a big J.O. fan. His punt return against Canton McKinley in Massillon was as good as they get. I saw him return at least two for scores that I remember so I hope he gets a shot with the Buckeyes. But I expect great things from him this year on defense. First of all he has no fear of contact and loves to knock your head off it he has a chance. Great size and speed. He only need to learn the game to prevent himself from being in the wrong position at the right time. He needs to have controlled aggression! I too think the defensive backfield could be an exciting group...especially if TGII has a chance to play back there.

marksgforce (Aug 3, 2006 1:11:59 PM)
Who is the next "Tressell" to be a head coach? Any nephews or son climbing the ladder?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:11:59 PM)
His nephew is in Cincinnati with Dantonio I believe but that would be it.

ohs (Aug 3, 2006 1:13:19 PM)
no insight on Cordle, just wondering why he's listed 3rd behind Whaley on C

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:13:19 PM)
Just a matter of time for Cordle. No offense to Whaley...but Cordle is likely the future at center. His injury last year certainly set him back.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:18:20 PM)
Marksgforce asked about who is going to be named Mr. Football this year and who will be the number one prospect going into next year. I actually deleted his question and my answer accidentally...somehow.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:23:35 PM)
My answer was guys like Saine, Clifford, Martin, Oliver, Mabin and Gamble would all have legitimate shots starting the season. I actually believe that Brandon Beachum might be the best two-way guy in the state by the team the season is over. If a junior could win it this year I would go with Beachum. If not...Mabin is going to have terrific statistics at Nordonia and so will Clifford on both sides of the ball. Martin could be dominate on defense to win it. Right now...I'm going to take Joran Mabin because I believe he will have a big year in all three facets of the game and his team could make it to the state championship game in Division II. We shall see. Next year going into the season, Beachum will be the hands down number one prospect amongst a very talented group in the class of 2008.

What impact has technology had on the recruiting process (i.e. blogs, text messages, etc.)?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:26:59 PM)
kmjbuckeye asked about technology before he left the chat...I would say a tremendous amount. It wasn't like this when I started covering sports 20 years ago thats for sure. Instant information has become a dangerous tool in the recruiting process. But you can't stop a runaway train just learn to deal with it. Cell phones alone have changed the process let alone computers and text messages. What's next on the horizon?

Guest (Aug 3, 2006 1:31:09 PM)
Gary, If Pittman chooses to leave this year, do you like our chances of recruiting another RB ? Kid from Chicago ? Lebron Daniel who transferred to Ville from Warrensville is supposed to be decent. He transferred with Rowell

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:31:09 PM)
Hicks asks about Pittman leaving before he left..and yes there is a likely possibility he could indeed do that . If he does that means he had a great year so that's good for Ohio State. But I wouldn't get too excited about any of the Chicago kids or the Wisconsin kid...OSU is fine with Saine and Herron this year. Lebron Daniel on the other hand is a defensive end and possible center on the O-line...not a running back. Curtis Hale is the RB from Warrensville and he'll be decent for Glenville but I don't think he will be on OSU's radar at all.

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 1:33:51 PM)
Is Connor Smith capable of competing for a job NEXT year? Where do you see him?

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:33:51 PM)
I don't see that happening and I like Connor Smith a whole lot. I wouldn't even mind him redshirting this year.

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:38:00 PM)
And with that last question I have to call it a wrap. I want to thank everyone for participating this afternoon. Next week Ohio State gets underway to begin their season of high expecations. They report Sunday and media day is Thursday. Bucknuts plans on providing the best Buckeye coverage on the Internet. I can't wait. Also high school scrimmages start next Friday as well so things are really starting to happen. Steve will be here tomorrow to chat. Have a good day and a great weekend. Go Bucks!

Philly Buck (Aug 3, 2006 1:39:05 PM)
Thanks Gary... Great chat!

GaryHousteau (Aug 3, 2006 1:39:05 PM)
Thank you Philly.
