Here are excerpts from Thursday's Chat session with Bucknuts.com managing editor Steve Helwagen. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers. Click this free link for more details.

kleintime16 (Aug 10, 2006 11:50:03 AM)
Any word on what happened with mark johnson?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:50:52 AM)
Mark came to Ohio State with a slight shoulder problem as I understand and had surgery to correct it, I guess, this summer. My guess is this makes him an RS this year. He'll come back in the spring, I suppose, and see where he's at. That is my take on it.

lharbers (Aug 10, 2006 11:50:56 AM)
Hi Steve, When will you next have access to the players or practice?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:51:40 AM)
Photo day is this afternoon and we'll be able to chat with a number of the players at that time. I am honestly not sure when the media access at practice is. We get about 20 minutes of one practice per week. Not much to gain from watching guys stretch.

kleintime16 (Aug 10, 2006 11:51:46 AM)
photo day = pictures tomorrow?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:52:06 AM)
Probably, be patient. Takes time to get things processed. Maybe some will be up tonight.

ToledoBucknutty (Aug 10, 2006 11:52:16 AM)
Someone needs to tighten the lugnuts......the wheels are coming off again.....I did get to see the inside of the most beautiful stadium in the country yesterday though on a brighter note.....Good afternoon Steve and thanks as always!!!

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:52:30 AM)
The world seems to change about every other day whether we like it or not.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 11:52:40 AM)
Steve, hows it going? Have been following the Washington recruitment (kind of a weird chain of events), the kid has every right to do what he wants, but did you get a sense of why he is waiting a week to officially announce? Seems everyone knows where he is going.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:54:49 AM)
It is definitely different. Most times when the cat is out of the bag like this, they just acknowledge it and move on. I guess this is what they had set in their mind. We caught some grief from people around St. Mary's when we first reported it weeks ago. I don't take any extra satisfaction in saying we had it first or we told you so. We want to try and respect the wishes of the kids because we want good working relationships when they come to OSU as well. It looks about 99 percent certain for OSU, especially when the coach says it. Usually, that is good enough for me. But in this case, since we already "jumped the gun" once, I want him to be able to say it.

JimC (Aug 10, 2006 11:54:58 AM)
Hi Steve, Rumors on the premium board of early commits in Sept for 2008. Who might these be?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:55:56 AM)
I have been told some guys may get some early offers. I think the obvious ones could be some of the nice junior OL like Mike Adams, Zebrie Sanders and Michael Brewster from Fla. I can NOT speak for the staff and tell you one or all of them will be offered. But that would not surprise me in the least.

smu0104 (Aug 10, 2006 11:55:59 AM)
So is it safe to assume that Ballard will not be redshirting this year if he picks up the offense well?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:56:59 AM)
They have Nicol and Brandon Smith as the returnees there. I guess you could make that inference. Maybe Miller shows more in camp than Ballard and they play him instead. It would strictly be a guess. Maybe we'll find out that Hoobler or Spitler or somebody else is now at TE as well.

ToledoBucknutty (Aug 10, 2006 11:57:03 AM)
Just read the article on banking schollies.....how many do you figure?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:57:58 AM)
They have 6 or 7 verbals now. I think they take around 17 in this class and hold whatever is left for next year. They only have 12 seniors next year and it is a star-studded class in Ohio, in particular. It only makes sense to hold a few for next year.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 11:58:05 AM)
I have heard that there will be a night practice open to the public, how is Bucknuts going to cover this and any shot of getting it streamed on the internet? Thanks

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 11:58:54 AM)
If they say the media can attend, we'll be there. ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:00:28 PM)
The rumor is that it will be Aug. 21 or thereabouts. I have heard no more details on it than that.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:01:41 PM)
Cameras may or may not be allowed to film all or part of it. I know when they have their jersey scrimmage, media can attend, but there can be no still or video cameras. My guess is they will not want video cameras at the night practice beyond stretching. We have no plans to stream anything at this time. That would be great to do it sometime in the future, though.

TheKaiser21 (Aug 10, 2006 12:01:54 PM)
Anything new on Clifford/Martin? Timetable? Your take on where we stand. And is Allen done to FSU.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:02:40 PM)
On Allen, I can only go by what the coach says ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:03:33 PM)
On the others, I have heard no new news to indicate a decision is imminent. I plan on seeing both guys in person at the Skyline Chili event in the first weekend of the season. My plan is to try and touch base with them there, so we'll see.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:04:05 PM)
If we don't post your specific question, look at the transcript. Somebody else probably asked it. OK ...

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:04:17 PM)
How did a loss is Frost? I guess it means Ballard wont redshirt . Is Nicol up to it?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:05:28 PM)
Big loss, I think. He was really coming into his own late in the year. 3 catches vs. Michigan, showed he could get some things done. It's a setback, but he needs to get his head straight and they have to move on without him. I can't speculate on what will be done with Ballard. I think Nicol is up for it if he stays healthy. If he can't, they'll be moving guys over, certainly.

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:06:13 PM)
who is the safety from virginia that we have already offered for 08?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:07:47 PM)
Rotell Jenkins, 6-2, 180, 4.4 from Richmond (Va.) Hugenot. One of the top schools in Va. I don't know anything about him other than he says OSU, Michigan, Penn State and North Carolina have offered. I didn't think you could formally offer a junior in ftb until 9/1 of their junior year. He probably has letters that say we plan to, etc.

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:07:55 PM)
what did frost do and any chance he's back next year or is he done?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:08:43 PM)
Rumors are rampant on Frost. I only feel comfortable in stating that his suspension pattern fits ths substance abuse protocol (2 weeks, then one year). Draw your own conclusions.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:09:13 PM)
We'll ask today if Tressel ever expects him back on the field and we'll see what he says. Somebody posted that Channel 6 said they learned he is done on the field at OSU.

Hicks74 (Aug 10, 2006 12:09:41 PM)
Hi Steve - With the new Marcel (Irizzarry) Frost fiasco does White figure at TE ? I am not psyched with Brandon Smith. Dionte Johnson can go back to FB. Would rather Ballard even gets force-fed than Smith to be honest. Thanks Frost !!!!!

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:10:30 PM)
Maybe Stan plays some at TE. They've never really used the TE in this offense much anyway. I don't think this is the end of the world. They'll figure it out.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 12:10:45 PM)
Steve, think its a pretty good bet that less than half of this class will redshirt this year? Seems the only "guarantees" are, henton, chekwa(sp?), olson, gant and browning.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:12:52 PM)
That is hard to say. Until they get on the field and show it, I don't think there are any guarantees. Malcolm Jenkins was a RS to me until he popped up in the 2-deep. Somebody could spark them like that this year. We'll see. ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:14:01 PM)
On paper, I think Henton, Olson, Browning, Smith, Dublin, Johnson, maybe Moeller, Chekwa, Gant, and maybe Schwartz are RS possibilites. That's about half.

stone cold buckeye (Aug 10, 2006 12:14:07 PM)
I know practice just started but are there any surprises yet or anyone standing out that we didn't expect.....aka Rose, etc.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:14:48 PM)
I think Rose is being thought of, already, as somebody who will be in the DE rotation. Great for him if that's true. I know some were impressed with the way Connor Smith and Tyler Moeller showed up as well, which is not a surprise.

Hicks74 (Aug 10, 2006 12:16:49 PM)
What is your preference on LG - I like Rehring or even one of the sophs esp Person better than Schaefer. Those sophs need reps sooner or later.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:17:17 PM)
I am sure Jim Bollman will go for the best player there. Schafer reportedly had a great spring.

buckeyeinsaline (Aug 10, 2006 12:17:26 PM)
Steve What recruit would be biggest win 1) emotionally 2) athletic talent 3) position of need for OSU class of 2007? I say martin, martin, barksdale

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:17:41 PM)
Martin and Clifford, probably. Both from OH and they fill needs.

smu0104 (Aug 10, 2006 12:17:52 PM)
Most recent updates have Pat Lazear being an OSU lean and his father says Pat and Fickell text each week. Is this a kid OSU really wants to bring in, especially in light of recent events? Whether we warrant the bad press or not is a moot point because we get it anway!

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:19:14 PM)
That is certainly curious, isn't it. I think you have to take people at their word. If the dad said OSU has been in touch, I guess you have to believe it. Let's see how far this gets (i.e. visits, etc.).

newtown27 (Aug 10, 2006 12:22:03 PM)
What do you think of all of the exploding interest in Buckeye Football this year. Sports Time Ohio and ONN are teaming up to have new shows just on buckeye football, does it seem that there's more interest than "usual" this year from a media standpoint?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:22:58 PM)
It is great. ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:24:09 PM)
I know ONN will be doing a weekly show on OSU. The concept is neat as it will recap the game and the Tuesday luncheon and look ahead to the next game. That's kind of nice. They are the No. 1 team. I just helped tape a segment for FSN Ohio's preseason show. That should be out later in the month.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 12:24:22 PM)
If you had to pick between Ben Martin and Robert Rose, who would you pick?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:24:51 PM)
Today, probably Rose. But Martin is a great player as well. That's a stilted question. Imagine how much trouble they can wreak at each end? Wow.

rbuck (Aug 10, 2006 12:26:07 PM)
Do you see Frost with OSU in 2007?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:26:25 PM)
I suppose if he can keep out of trouble. Maybe Tressel will shed some light today on that.

Byars (Aug 10, 2006 12:26:34 PM)
Someone had some stats on the 2003 recruiting class. Amazing the class can be such a bust and OSU ranked #1.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:28:32 PM)
Class was ranked 24th nationally. Starters include Barton, Gonzo and Patterson. Already in the NFL are Whitner and Youboty. Busts (or potential busts) include Cotton, Frost, Guilford, Hiley, Jordan, Maupin and Reggie Smith. On the bubble is Curt Lukens. Yep, 24th was about right.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 12:28:48 PM)
Is Ohio going to limit scholarships this year and save them for the tons of talent in state next year

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:29:06 PM)
That's my thought. Hold 2 for next year, sign 17 this year. That should let them sign 15-17 next year as well.

kleintime16 (Aug 10, 2006 12:29:18 PM)
who do you think are the top qbs that the OSU coaches know about for the 08 class - and is there any player that they really like - and that this is a reason why they are not going after a qb in this class?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:30:27 PM)
There are some in Ohio. Maybe OSU has a plan. The best one I know of may be Domonique Britt at Trotwood-Madison. He is 6-5, 190, good athlete.

PigMan (Aug 10, 2006 12:30:37 PM)
Things are looking up for D'Andrea. Any word behind the scenes as to how he is looking?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:31:07 PM)
Sounds like he is mixing in well. Again, no pads and no 2-a-days this week. Let's see when the bullets start flying if he is still standing. Hope for the best.

murphy98 (Aug 10, 2006 12:31:13 PM)
steve, asked a question about dukes but got booted off. back on and would love a response if you have time to get to it today. thx

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:31:57 PM)
Dukes is in camp, but for whatever reason he has watched Robiskie and Hartline move by him. Not sure if it's off-field or on-field consistency issues. But Hazell has moved them ahead of Dukes in his pecking order. He needs a good camp to get in the mix.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 12:32:03 PM)
Whats the story with Plummer? What is his role going to be? Thanks

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:32:40 PM)
I heard volunteer coach helping with conditioning. I don't think he can coach on the field. You can't have enough good people like Ahmed around the program and counseling players in the down time, etc.

PigMan (Aug 10, 2006 12:32:46 PM)
I heard that JT was planning an open scrimmage at a local high school to try and prepare for the night game in Austin. Any truth to that?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:33:09 PM)
He alluded to that the other day. No details have been announced. He talked about inviting the public. We'll see what materializes.

Poz79 (Aug 10, 2006 12:33:13 PM)
Any thoughts on Dwayne Jarrett receiving no penalty from the NCAA?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:34:19 PM)
Pretty remarkable. I guess you could make the case he was unknowingly and unwittingly accepting an extra benefit. They did not overtly try to skirt the rules. There was a good faith gesture for him to pay rent (even if it was off by $1,500 a month ... ha ha). Troy got 2 games for a $500 payment. This must be something different, obviously.

tarbuck (Aug 10, 2006 12:34:38 PM)
I am a huge Tressel fan, but with the loss of Holmes I am concerned that our offense will struggle at times. Do you believe he will take enough risk with the offense to give the defense time to grow.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:35:52 PM)
I don't think you can underestimate this. Holmes made so many HUGE plays the last 3 years. Ginn needs to step up and be a consistent force. And Gonzo, Robiskie and Hartline have to take the heat off of him. Ginn had 17 catches in the last 2 games vs. UM and ND. That may be too much to expect game in and game out, but he can't have any more games like Texas and PSU where he was hardly heard from.

TheKaiser21 (Aug 10, 2006 12:35:58 PM)
Any thoughts or projections on the LB situations. specifically MLB. seems like everyone has an opinion on this topic, and they are all different.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:36:28 PM)
Kerr is the guy until we hear otherwise. D'Andrea can shake it up. I'm not sure Fickell wants anybody else in that spot. It's safe to play a senior who should know what needs done.

PigMan (Aug 10, 2006 12:36:34 PM)
I heard Moeller had packed on 20-30 pounds since last fall without losing any quickness. Any truth to that?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:36:49 PM)
I have no way to determine that. Gary will be talking to him today, so we'll see.

ToledoBucknutty (Aug 10, 2006 12:37:03 PM)
More of a comment than anything really.....I almost shrugged it off before and just simply said he's an immature thug or whatever, but I hope that if/when Reecie gets a shot at the outside again that he gets some mandatory psych evals.....he almost sounds like a paranoid schizo or an extreme case of bipolar.....I just hope that he gets help one day and that's tough when he always seems to shun those that try to care for him. Sorry, I know that you'd rather not talk about this....

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:38:12 PM)
Well ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:39:49 PM)
He needs help. It is so tough to talk about what another person needs to do to get their life on track. It seemed like all he had going for him was football. He tried to get paid prematurely for that and could not abide by the system. We can debate whether the system is right or wrong all day. They get an education, but that does not appeal in the least to some of them. All they want is a pro contract ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:41:24 PM)
He had the chance to get that, but his own self destructive ways with the alcoholism and so on hurt him. You hope he can get mental health and change his ways and become a functioning member of society. He is not functional as he is today. He is broken. I imagine he will be spending the next several years in jail. With good behavior, maybe he gets out in 3-4 years, gets in shape and tries football one more time. Beyond that, he will have to carve out a new life for himself. That's hard to do with no resources.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 12:41:50 PM)
Are there any possible verbals this month, outside of Washington and Torrence?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:42:03 PM)
I haven't heard of anybody this close to verbaling.

Hicks74 (Aug 10, 2006 12:42:42 PM)
Steve - If either Chris Wells or Pittman go down, is there anyone you would prefer other than Maurice Wells as an overall back ? Russell ?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:43:32 PM)
Russell is not playing offense. I guess Shaun Lane would be an emergency back. That would be a disaster if one or both of the 2 big guys go down. The Haw departure leaves them vulnerable again.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:43:41 PM)
Good news is that Saine and Herron are on the way.

kleintime16 (Aug 10, 2006 12:43:52 PM)
Who will end up being the markee player of this class? Much like C Wells and TGII were in theirs

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:44:17 PM)
Probably Ben Martin and Eugene Clifford when and if they verbal. My guess is OSU will also get a big name outside the state, whoever that may be.

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:44:23 PM)
will we now recruit a TE for 07 and if so who?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:44:30 PM)
I imagine so.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:44:47 PM)
Not sure if there are any in Ohio who are worthy.

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:44:51 PM)
if they keep ballard and miller at TE it puts pressure on the OL/tackle recruiting?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:45:15 PM)
No, I don't see that. They are in good shape with Adams for next year. They'll be fine.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:45:30 PM)
I have never considered Ballard or Miller as OL.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:45:42 PM)
Maybe I'm in the minority.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:46:05 PM)
I, for one, would not want to be on the R.J. Coleman path -- jack of all trades, master of none.

ohs (Aug 10, 2006 12:46:15 PM)
is Washington definitely going to committ to us?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:46:20 PM)
Seems like it.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 12:46:27 PM)
Steve, out of curiosity, do you know how many paying members Bucknuts had before the NC season and how many you guys have now? Just looking at the boards it seems membership has boomed. Thanks

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:47:01 PM)
Membership is booming. My guess is the site has tripled in size since that time. We had about 1400 members when I arrived in Sept. 03 and have over 5100 now.

letsplay (Aug 10, 2006 12:47:14 PM)
I'm watching the 75 Rose Bowl on CSTV now, and wondering if JT can keep up winning bowl games at a 4-1 clip. Woody was 50% and most coaches don't do much better. We don't even want to mention coop. What is it that makes JT so good at bowl games, at least so far in his career at OSU. The irony is the losing record after a bye week. Go Figure?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:48:10 PM)
It helps to play inferior teams like K-State, Oklahoma State (wow, were they outmatched) and ND (ditto). Just kidding. The guy is a genius at postseason football. He won 4 I-AA playoff titles. Guys like he and Matta have a way to have their team peaking at the right time.

Byars (Aug 10, 2006 12:48:21 PM)
Not going to include Morris in that 2003 ranking?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:48:56 PM)
You've got your classes confused. Morris, D'Andrea, Smith, Zwick, Hawk, Clarett and the rest were 2002. That class was No. 2 behind Texas.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:49:12 PM)
That was a great, great class even with the flameouts.

lharbers (Aug 10, 2006 12:49:17 PM)
Our secondary scares me. (Mich st and Minny 2005) Do you think we have enough speed back there to make up for the lack of experience or will the line be stong enough to keep us at No. 1?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:49:57 PM)
OSU needs the front 4 to dictate tempo and create negative plays (sacks and force INTs). The secondary is a major concern. Green as grass.

Pastor Jack (Aug 10, 2006 12:50:03 PM)
If this has been asked, I apologize: Any word on Frost, and what he did to get suspended for a year?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:50:44 PM)
Lots of rumors. I will only make this simple observation. His suspensions (2-3 weeks last year and one year this year) match up perfectly with OSU's substance abuse protocol. Draw your own conclusion.

Hicks74 (Aug 10, 2006 12:50:54 PM)
Steve, I am sorry for the recent health issues on the OSU staff but coupled with losses to other programs, is there any young buck ala Luke Fickell that has possibilities ?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:51:40 PM)
I don't think Fickell or Peterson leave. Hazell could be a possibility but only for a coordinator or head job. He is the assistant HC at OSU. I think Fickell could go the Fitzgerald route and be a future HC here one day.

TheKaiser21 (Aug 10, 2006 12:51:52 PM)
Can you compare T. Washington to somebody. I know some people were reading to much into his scUM camp performance. I believe you got a close up look at him at tOSU camp, and where very high on him.(or was that Gary) Srry if it was, but can you make a comparison to anyone on what he brings to the table as a WR.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:52:16 PM)
This is a better question for Gary. He has seen him in person at track meets, etc. He is 6-0, 170.

TheKaiser21 (Aug 10, 2006 12:52:31 PM)
That is a BS ploy. He never has taken responsibility for anything he has done in his life, and this is just another excuse. Don't mistaken mental illness for stupidity. Please

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:53:19 PM)
Call it what you want. His behavior is so erratic, so beyond the norm. He's a broken man. He wants all the fame and fortune without doing any of the work.

lharbers (Aug 10, 2006 12:53:23 PM)
What's the record high number for people logged into bucknuts at one time? I think we should set a date and time for everyone to log in and see how high we can get it.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:53:38 PM)
I am seeing 700 and 800 people online at one time now. That is so great to see.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:53:43 PM)
No idea what the record is.

Hicks74 (Aug 10, 2006 12:54:06 PM)
Steve, I meant would Russell switch back. The Haw thing concerned me because I still thought we could win with Haw under even dire circumstances such as CWells and/or Pittman going down. That leaves one guy who will need a breather.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:54:41 PM)
Russell was never with the offense, to my knowledge. I think he has been defense all the way. He is a potential starter on defense. They are definitely thin.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 12:54:53 PM)
If we take a 3rd back this year(from Wisconson) does at least 1 of them switch ie Saine to wr

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:55:08 PM)
There is talk Saine would play WR. He told me he is an RB all the way, though.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 12:55:14 PM)
Do we redshirt Small to save him for TGII iminent departure

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:55:42 PM)
No, if he can help this year, he plays. If he's healthy, his speed is too good to overlook.

A Pittman rushes for ____ yards and ___ tds, C Wells rushes for ____ yeards and ___ tds?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:56:21 PM)
Pittman rushes for 1,400 yards and 10 TDs, Wells rushes for 800 yards and 12 TDs (short yardage, goal line back)

thequietstorm86 (Aug 10, 2006 12:56:26 PM)
what do you think the chances are that mike d'andrea beats out kerr for the middle linebacker spot?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:57:04 PM)
He has not been healthy since, what, 2002? Let's see him get through the tough part first. If he's healthy, they split time and the better guy after 2-3 weeks will take most of the snaps from there on in.

Steve - Questions about the new rules. First, the clock starts on change of possession. Doesn't TV typically interject commercials on change of possession? How is that going to work on those occasions? Will they take the time out and start the clock coming out of commercial?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:58:21 PM)
Clock will start when the referee spots the ball for play and winds the 25-second play clock after the commercial ends. They won't be running the clock during commercials. Those at the game see a guy standing at the 30-yard line in the SW corner of the stadium. He signals to the referee when the commercial ends and that's when it will start.

buckgrad (Aug 10, 2006 12:58:28 PM)
Dont know if you have analyzed the roster like this, however, is there a chance of 30 member class like Ole Miss had in the future (due to the weak 03 class or otherwise).

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:58:49 PM)
No, OSU's class balance is skewed so they never have more than 20 openings, it seems at one time.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 12:58:52 PM)
Do you see JT or Matta leaving OSU for the pros?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:58:56 PM)
Ha ... no.

ryan20 (Aug 10, 2006 12:59:09 PM)
Early lines in Vegas.. OSU -1 @ UT, and Even @ Iowa. -6 Mich St., -6.5 scUM... any thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 12:59:42 PM)
Those lines are simply a guess. Great respect for OSU. 6-1/2 over Michigan? That will be a tight game, mark my words.

Pastor Jack (Aug 10, 2006 12:59:46 PM)
Do you think Chris Carter will ever be on staff at tOSU?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:00:14 PM)
No, probably not. He has too much money to be tied down to an 80-hour a week, 50-week a year job. Why put himself through that?

letsplay (Aug 10, 2006 1:00:38 PM)
How hard is it to compile a matrix listing when kids say they are planning to commit? You could do something like before the season, during the season, after the season/AA game, LOI day. I know things change, but one could use the latest update as a reference.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:01:16 PM)
Well, kids only can guess when they plan to announce. It is such an abstract. Until they know and set a date, it's only a guess. It usually happens before they think it would happen anyway.

mdbuck (Aug 10, 2006 1:01:29 PM)
Just joined, Do you think our defence will be better than avg. Bowden said this the more points you score the better your defense becomes. Also it seems to me people were talking about Freeman before he got hurt, That he was going to be good LB. Maybe we cant replace who we lost but if we can get 80% and score more points we could be ok

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:02:19 PM)
A great offense can help a defense. They keep the ball away, they pin the opponent back, etc. Freeman is my guy to watch as well. The defense has talent but no experience. They should be pretty good by the end of the year.

Steve - More questions on the new rules. The clock starts the moment the ball is kicked on kick-offs. At the end of a close game where a team takes a narrow lead, isn't this inviting what some might consider an invitation to do some sideline shenanigans a la kick the ball down the sideline out of bounds and consume some clock?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:03:18 PM)
I don't know the intricasies of all those new timing rules. I agree, I think that is absurd. It should not start on a kickoff in the final minute or 2 minutes of either half, only when it is touched by the return team.

kleintime16 (Aug 10, 2006 1:03:27 PM)
3 weeks cant get here soon enough ....

Steve - Where can I read about the stud 2008 linemen (Adams-Brewster-Sanders) ? Is Brewster favoring OSU ?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:04:07 PM)
We have an update coming on Adams. We'll work on the others. I know Brewster has OSU already on his short list. Not sure what the tie is to Ohio State.

bucks#1everyyear (Aug 10, 2006 1:04:12 PM)
I think that our sophomore safety O'neal has a chance to be the best safety ever at Ohio State when its all said and done. What are your thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:04:21 PM)
Better than Tatum or Doss? Uh ...

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:05:17 PM)
He can be a good one. Let's see what he has first. Tatum was the national defensive player of the year and Doss was one of just 7 three-time A-A's in OSU history. Sometimes you have to be careful in blowing guys up with tags like that before they've even really played a down here.

Ytownsoldier (Aug 10, 2006 1:05:29 PM)
With Saine and small in the mix, who is the fastest buckeye?

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:06:16 PM)
Those 2 are comparable. Small was hurt at the state. Saine won 2 of the sprints, so I'd say Saine or Ginn or Small. A 60-yard race would be interesting.

SteveHelwagen (Aug 10, 2006 1:06:48 PM)
Guys I am going to wind it down. Have some details to handle before going to photo day. Stay tuned for some stories and content from photo day. Anything else?
