Good afternoon Bucknuts! Sorry I'm late. On the telephone with Al Williams, the father of Taurian Washington. Could have talked all day. Setting up an interview with his son. The family couldn't be happier that he's a Buckeye!

Any questions you have you can send them in now.
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 10:54:48 AM)
Can you believe it that high school football starts next week and then our beloved Buckeyes a week later. I have scrimmages lined up all weekend and I'm trying to sort through all of that. Ohio State's scrimmage is Saturday as well. Is this great or what?
snoopy (Aug 17, 2006 10:57:29 AM)
Do you think "Taz" Moeller will see the field this season?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 10:57:29 AM)
Hi snoopy...great first question of the day...I like this kid a whole and he has his head squarely on his shoulders. He's so competitive yet he's willing to be patient. I don't think he will see the field this year because the LB corps is so deep and he even wants to get bigger and put more weight on. He's extremely excited to be a part of the defense whether he stays at LB or moves to Safety. I talked to him on media day at length and he's ready to go. But I'll say no to your question. No need to use him this year.

Hi Gary, I need tp for my......nevermind. See they moved the practice to the shoe. Why the last minute change?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 10:59:11 AM)
Thegreatcornholio lives again...I imagine it's to accomodate all of you Bucknuts out there. I don't know the reasoning behind the switch to tell you the truth, I'm assuming it's for obvious reasons.

Gary, what sticks out to you about OSU camp?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:01:19 AM)
I had a few eyes at one of the practices recently and they all raved about the way the team seemed to be going about their business in general. Hard working, fast paced, enthusiasm. It's early in camp obviously but it's good to know the guys have that sense of urgency. I hope to have a better idea about the talent level after the scrimmage on Saturday.
buckenfuego (Aug 17, 2006 11:05:30 AM)
seen the new depth chart? I think Homan starts game 1 now that we have Laurinitis in the middle, how about you?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:05:30 AM)
I don't thin Homan will start game one buckenfuego, but I do think he can possibly transition into the position at some time sooner rather than later. Ross just looked tremendous in person at photo day. My personal expectations of him are sky high already and I just loved what I saw of him last Thursday. The kid is a stud. I'm certain John Kerr is going to fight his tail end off and I'm still behind him 100 percent until proven otherwise. But Homan is special. And you know what? Thaddeus Gibson is special also. It may take him a while longer but once he finds out what's going on out there...look out! Another stud! My guys who watched him practiced this week thought he was awesome. But yes I absolutely love Ross Homan. I have for some time now. And he's yet to disappoint.
Royal Flush47 (Aug 17, 2006 11:10:39 AM)
Is it wrong to look on recruits' myspace.com pages for recruiting info? I admit I was curious after reading some posts and decided to look at the linked page. Mike Adams & Kyle Long (VA OLineman, 2008) seem to have the most interesting pages (from an OSU perspective). Long, Adams, and Mike Brewster seem to be planning to commit to OSU and play together. It is exciting to see all these top recruits talking about OSU, but I feel a little wierd after reading pages from HS kids (although I was in HS 2 years ago). Is there any rumblings from insiders that believe OSU will get Kyle Long, Mike Brewster, and Mike Adams?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:10:39 AM)
Hi Royal Flush 47...you bring up a good point about Myspace...it's good and bad. Some kids on there talk about drinking and partying a little too much and that could possibly hurt their chances. I have to believe every staff has to utilize every avenue that's available to them when evaluating a kid and Myspace provides another avenue that some players might not yet realize. As far as the Adams and Brewster thing yes it gives you a very good indication of where those two guys are leaning...a very good indication. I'm not really familiar with Kyle Long as much as the other two so maybe I'll have to go check out his space on Myspace after my chat. But yes I think Adams and Brewster are all but a 3-foot put away from being a Buckeye...excuse the PGA Championship analogy. Tiger and Phil together for two days at a major...couldn't ask for anything better! Hopefully they'll be together all four days down to the wire.
smu0104 (Aug 17, 2006 11:14:32 AM)
What's up with the LB changes? Is Kerr really suited to play the Will even if he has lost weight and gotten quicker? When Homan is healthy where do you see him?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:14:32 AM)
Hi smu0104...I've said it consitently since I first saw him play in high school...John Kerr is a football player. He's the kind of kid you want to go to battle with. Tremendous instincts. All the pundits can tell you the reasons why he hasn't played for the past two years but I'm still waiting to see him do some of the things he did in high school and in his first season at Indiana. On the other hand...I've said all along that Homan needs to come in a play. He's that good. So that's Fickell's job right now. I'm just going to sit back and watch. I'm anxious to see how Kerr plays on Saturday. I, for one, have never written him off.

buckenfuego (Aug 17, 2006 11:20:22 AM)
Do you think with all the talent we have at LB and guys like Beachum hopefully coming in next year, that we have to move some of those guys elsewhere? like Hoobler to DE?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:20:22 AM)
I think Hoobler to DE is a great move. They may want to revisit the tight end situation with him again. I saw this kid play TE in high school and thought he was terrific at the position. Kirk Lowdermilk coached him up at the position in high school. Hoobler was a terrific two-way player for Carrollton. But with the surplus at LB it makes sense to give him new life at another position. Why not. The LB's are deep and will continue to get deeper when Beachum and others come on board. I still like Beachum as a RB also. I watched him scrimmage last week and he showed some brilliant flashes at RB on a couple of occasions. He's still hampered with a little thigh bruise however. He's a stud. Looks great.
ohs (Aug 17, 2006 11:21:54 AM)
will Ginn play DB at all this year? Haven't heard much about that.
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:21:54 AM)
I hope so ohs but the prevailing thought at this time seems to be no. I believe we could see TGII in situational defenses like the red zone for instance. With all the inexperience at the other corner opposition Jenkins, it just makes so much sense to have Teddy rep at the position. Only time will tell.
PigMan (Aug 17, 2006 11:27:50 AM)
How awesome is it that we sem to be recruiting the top talent in Michigan better than TTUN is?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:27:50 AM)
Hi PigMan...isn't it wonderful! Obviously Ohio State is still in on Barksdale despite how ominous it may look right now. One would think OSU would still be in on Dionte Allen but I've heard that his commitment to FSU is solid...no going back on his word. I think a great season for OSU could possibly sway him this way but I heard that he will not decommit. Ohio State is still in play with Johnson from what I'm told. Johnson and Allen are best friends and they hang together with Washington so there's a good chance Johnson could go either place...if not all come together at OSU. That's an unlikely scenario however. But having Gant and now Washington is certainly a good thing if Allen does get cold feet. But yes it is wonderful to be in on their state's top guys. Michigan could get stiffed by all of them.
MBuck37 (Aug 17, 2006 11:30:46 AM)
Is there any new information in regards to E.Clifford? Will he be a Buckeye in the end? If so will he wait til the end of the Football Season or will it be before then..Thanks
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:30:46 AM)
Hi MBuck37...From the recent news that I've been privy to, yes I believe that Clifford will become a Buckeye. He may wait a few games into the season like Moeller did last year but I was told it looks to be a certainty that he will be on board. Looking forward to seeing him play in week one. Steve and I will have a better understanding of his situation then I'm sure. We'll be all over the Crosstown Showdown in week one.
Royal Flush47 (Aug 17, 2006 11:32:53 AM)
To add on from my previous post, all three (Brewster, Adams, and Long) are recruiting JB Shugarts from Texas. That would be 4 of the top 12 OLineman in the nation, then add Zebrie Sanders! That just wouldn't be fair! It's just cool to see these blue-chip lineman recruiting each other to OSU because they want to win a National Championship.
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:32:53 AM)
Yes it could just be ridiculous. I'm certain that it looks great for at least 3 of those 5. Ohio State has a really good chance at landing four of those five. And they're going to fall like dominos when it does happen. Wonderful isn't it.
scribeohio (Aug 17, 2006 11:34:59 AM)
Gary, your impressions of coaches Bollman/Daniels health. Thanks
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:34:59 AM)
God Bless them both first off scribeohio. It's wonderful to see these two man going right back at it. I'm certain that working for a wonderful man like Jim Tressel is so helpful for their respective situations. Just continue to pray for them.
TheKaiser21 (Aug 17, 2006 11:39:09 AM)
srry if this has been asked, Is there any Wiggle room with D. Allen, or is he sold on FSU. I know Bowden can be pretty persuasive, but how in the world did this kid fall in love with FSU. I live close to Tally, and it is nothing special.
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:39:09 AM)
It's one of those things Kaiser...I've recently developed some solid lines of communications with people at St. Mary's and they've been pretty candid with me. Allen is as much set with Florida State as Taurian is with Ohio State. From what I've been told... I don't see either of them ever going back on their commitment. Neither is likely to decommit from what I've been told...not that Washington might anyway. My point is that both guys thoughtfully made their respective decision and aren't going to go back on their word. But to be honest, if Ohio State still works hard at Allen, if they want him, there is a possible chance he could end up with his cousin and now his best friend at Ohio State. It makes sense but the early line is that it will not happen. I'm going up to game there in September.
marksgforce (Aug 17, 2006 11:42:28 AM)
Gary -- is this the most brutal September you can ever remember for the Buckeyes -- @ Texas; @ Iowa; PSU; plus 2-more solid mid-majors to make sure there is no week-off ... I'm optimistic as heck, but looking at this, realize it's a tough tough start ...
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:42:28 AM)
But that's what this game and this team is all about. Ohio State has a chance to not only be the best but they can beat the best as well. This is want you want when you have a team of this caliber. I argue that this offense will disect any opponent across from them either on the ground or in the air. Total dominance...anything less is a total disappointment. Ohio State has Ted Ginn and Troy Smith both legitmately poised for a Heisman run and a two wonderful running backs behind a solid veteran line. All the ingredients are there including Gonzo and Roy Hall and the rest of the offense. I'll take this crew against all comers. Bring it on. You got to love it!

Gary, your impression of the Sikes (sp?) kid from Painesville? Thanks
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:44:55 AM)
Passes the look test about as well as any OL I've ever seen at the high school level. Ever! That's my only impression now until I see him in action. He looked pretty agile for a big man at a couple of camps I watched him at namely the Nike and the Browns camp.

how about ginn playing qb
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:46:58 AM)
From buckeye joe...why not for a play or two...he's done it in high school and in the Alamo Bowl game. Ginn can do anything! Put him in the shot ginn and let Troy go in the slot! JT needs to do everything imaginable with TGII this year. No limits on him this year. It's all about touches! Lots of them.
buck76 (Aug 17, 2006 11:49:34 AM)
If you had to bet on how many yards Pittman and Beanie would have it would be ?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:49:34 AM)
Hi buck76...I truly believe that both Pittmand and Beaning, barring significant injury, with both rush for over 1,000 yards. I'd like to think 1,700 for Pittman and 1,400 for Beanie. I see lots of big runs and runs after contact for each of them. Beanie could be a national star by week two.
TheBurningRed (Aug 17, 2006 11:51:43 AM)
Right now, in your opionion, who starts at QB next year?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:51:43 AM)
Hi the burning red...I'm more familiar with Schoenhoft then I am with any of the other two right now so I'll go with the ultra-competitive Schoenhoft. I've viewed him as a cant-miss guy since I first saw him play. I think Henton will be just too green to start next year. Too green.
kleintime16 (Aug 17, 2006 11:54:48 AM)
Who, if anyone, will recieve any early offer - shortly after September?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:54:48 AM)
Formally I believe Adams and Brewster are certain to have an offer and I would probably throw Sanders and Shugarts in there as well. I would hope that Beachum gets a Sept. 1 offer. Oklahoma will have one in Beachum's lap on the 1st and OSU doesn't want to get behind with this kid. Man there are so many good juniors in Ohio this year. I love the way this class is shaping up.

GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 11:57:31 AM)
Plans on hold for right now score 7. I really believe Coach Ginn's illness last year threw the entire momentum of the project off course and they may possibly reload with the funding efforts after this season. I've seen the blue prints but I understanding their initial attempt at landing the necessary grants fell through. I'm sure the project will regain steam at some point in the future. He's committed to it.

GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:00:39 PM)
Hi ohio guy...how about Robert Rose? Pitcock and Patterson are givens. I can't wait to see Marcus Freeman start to live up to his potential this year. There's a lot of reasons to be excited about this defense. Anderson Russell is another reason. Possibly Donald Washington at the other corner. Laurinaitis should be solid to stellar in the middle. Homan is a complete stud. Jay Rich needs to play well. Sir Lawrence Wilson needs to live up to his potential. On and on! Pitcock is the one guy that makes me the most secure and happy about this defense.

GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:04:58 PM)
Allen is an interesting situation because on the one hand I was told it's not likely he'll go back on his commitment to FSU but on the other hand even he gave me an indication or two that Ohio State wasn't still out of the picture yet.

marksgforce (Aug 17, 2006 12:09:36 PM)
Is the die cast for Kerr with position changes at LB ... know he has devoted fans on the site, but have also heard critiques on his speed AND his relationship with teammates ... will he fade away or hold a starting position?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:09:36 PM)
At the very worst John Kerr is a great insurance policy to have around. The way I look at it is that Kerr was a football player in high school no question, one of Chuck Kyle's favorites and he knows a thing or two about the sport. And two, he's already done it in the Big Ten in his freshman year at Indiana. He's a football player. Does OSU have more talented college players than Kerr, if they do then that's a good thing. I wish him the best. I want the best players to play and if the coaches deem him to be one of the three best then so be it. They know way more than you or I or what any 40 time indicates.
marksgforce (Aug 17, 2006 12:10:12 PM)

GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:12:23 PM)
MBuck37 asked about Worthington...he looked great on Media day and he told me he was feeling great. I wouldn't have any high expectations for him this year however. I would think he just needs to take it slow and get his knee stronger. No rush this year.

now that we have had a full seasn to see coach Heacock as the Def. Coord, how do you evaluate his performance ?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:15:52 PM)
Hi gettysburg...I really the defense under Coach Heacock...Heacock was a former head coach who JT matched wits against in the past and now his experience over the years has helped him become a capable D-Coordinator. His brother Jon was JT's D-coordinator for a time at YSU before he went to Indiana and came back again. The Heacock family is from Beloit West Branch, up here near my neck of the woods. I'm happy to see both brothers doing so well in there respective careers. YSU should have their best season by far since JT left ... they have yet to make the playoffs post-Tressel. That's just unacceptable.

Gary wondering what your realistic thoughts on this year is i can see us losing 3 just as easy as us winning it all and I do hope we can when it all that be great
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:20:30 PM)
Ohio guy asked about my realistic thoughts this year and we have a staff have answered these questions in the new Bucknuts magazine for you. My approach to answering this question is this... Ohio State will likely be favored in every game this year because they have the better team and the better personnel overall...so if they fulfill their expectations and win every game, one week at a time, they have a very realistic shot at going 13-0 and winning it all. And what's even more special is that they have a chance to be dominant and go wire-to-wire. This scenario doesn't happen very often. OSU fans are in for something special if you ask me.
chuangtsu (Aug 17, 2006 12:21:13 PM)
Robby S must have a lock on the QB spot for next year if we are not going for a QB this year...right?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:21:13 PM)
Makes sense but Boeckman will provide a very stiff challenge. He's very capable as well and has been in the program forever.
chuangtsu (Aug 17, 2006 12:24:42 PM)
How would you rate Small's hands? Better or worse than Ginn? Can he press for time next year on speed alone?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:24:42 PM)
Small has good hands. I really think Teddy has good strong hands as well. He just makes mistakes because he's looking to make things happen before they happen. I don't see Small having any kind of Ted Ginn like freshman year but I hope that I'm wrong about this. He definitely has the speed but even I don't believe he has that extra gear that TGII has on a punt return for instance.
chuangtsu (Aug 17, 2006 12:25:34 PM)

Show me the money! You have to grab the cash while you have a chance.
chuangtsu (Aug 17, 2006 12:27:22 PM)
What is the word on Nicol? Can we expect to see him catch a lot of balls down the middle?
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:27:22 PM)
Not really. I like Nicol a lot as a hybrid tightend. He'll have to block because the position requires it in this offense. Tight ends don't really make many impact catches in this offense...their just not in the gameplan for that. Hopefully they'll throw to him more than usual but I don't expect it.
chuangtsu (Aug 17, 2006 12:28:25 PM)
If Troy Smith goes down to an injury do you see Zwick playing well? Well enough to run the table? Considering our running game I would think that he too could be very dangerous at the wheel of this O-fense!
GaryHousteau (Aug 17, 2006 12:28:25 PM)
I'm happy to have a veteran back up like Justin Zwick...it makes this team even better. He's just an injury away from playing again.

I just call them the way I see him. Browning has so many intangibles that you can't see on film or video. He's truly a wonderful kid. I see him potentially being a longtime starter on the offensive line at whatever position he settles into. He can play all three if needed a la Doug Datish. The depth is so good on the O-line.

I love Ray Small don't get me wrong. I fought tooth and nail for this kid all season long until he was eventually accepted. I just don't see in Small what I've seen in Teddy at the high school level. And heaven knows I've seen both enough up close and in person to have a feel for that. I hope I'm wrong but Teddy was/is really special. Ray could be similar but I just don't see it happening as quick as it did for Teddy. Again I hope I'm wrong. Love both of these two Glenville Tarblooders.

And for anybody else who likes the guys from Glenville...commercial...go to www.jadgang.com and get yourself a Glenville T-shirt. My buddy owns that company and sells a ton of jerseys, throwbacks and replicas, and you can find a Glenville T-shirt there. Another commercial...I have another friend who owns www.scoutingohio.com and you go on that site to see Glenville players and other fine high school prospects videos on that site. I can vouch for the quality on both sites and have no ownership in either site.

It's almost two hours and I have to call it a wrap now. Thanks to everyone for attending the chat today. A lively session indeed. Ohio State fans are in store for a great season unlike any we've ever witnessed before. It's almost here. Can't wait. Go Bucks! Scrimmages this weekend. I need to see St. Ed's play this weekend.
