Good afternoon to all of you Bucknuts out there!
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 8:48:43 AM)
FYI...because of the last-minute change of the jersey scrimmage from Saturday to Friday last week I was not able to attend the scrimmage in person as I was expecting to.
thegreatcornholio (Aug 25, 2006 8:50:47 AM)
Hi Gary, sounds like we are setting ourselves up quite a haul for the PSU game?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 8:50:47 AM)
Hi the great one...if you're referring to the numerous recruits that are expected to attend that game...then yes OSU is in a good position to come away with a lot of those guys once they start talking even more to each other than they already do.
ohs (Aug 25, 2006 8:53:11 AM)
what happened with hoobler?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 8:53:11 AM)
I've been doing a lot of high school stuff in recent days so I'm not completely up to speed on all things Buckeye but if you're referring to his transfer to Ashland I believe that is still the case. I haven't spoken to him or his high school coach since the news broke so I have no first hand information. Chad's a competitor and probably realized he wasn't going to get to play much in the middle so he made the move. I guess defensive end didn't really appeal to him that much. He transfers down so he'll be able to play right away.
thegreatcornholio (Aug 25, 2006 8:55:18 AM)
It looks like Sirjo made the grade, do you think he will play this year or should he RS?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 8:55:18 AM)
the word is from what I've been told is that he was at practice this week watching so the assumption is from what I know is that he will possibly rejoin the team at some point in the future. I really have no details other than speculation from what I've been told. If it's true...Sir just needs to work harder on the field and off.
ohs (Aug 25, 2006 8:58:02 AM)
whats up with spitler? havent heard about him?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 8:58:02 AM)
Hi ohs...as far as I know he's still somewhere in the mix looking for playing time at linebacker. Steve doesn't list him in his two if that's what you're referring to. I'm sure he's still working his tail off. He's a competitor as well.
labsbeabmm (Aug 25, 2006 9:01:32 AM)
who's likely to declare soon?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:01:33 AM)
That seems to be the $64,000 dollar question right now. I'm curious to see where Solomon Thomas stands tonight when I watch him play at Miami University in Oxford. Clifford is a possibility as well. I hope he doesn't string it along like Moeller did last year. Steve and I will see Clifford play tonight also. Maybe one of those two.
Poz79 (Aug 25, 2006 9:03:28 AM)
Hi Gary, whos your top Ohio QB in the 08 class?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:03:28 AM)
Hi Poz....Well right now I would have to go with Domonick Britt from Trottwood. I really like that junion combination of Britt and Moore, the already highly regarded tight end at Trotwood. There is so much top heavy talent in Ohio in '08 that it's scary. Devoe Torrence really was impressive last night. Extremely impressive.
ManhattanBuck (Aug 25, 2006 9:06:31 AM)
So we have heard good news from the camp and practices overall then why do I feel anxious ??? Could i be jaded from previous yrs or am just an "expectant mom" ?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:06:31 AM)
Why anxious Manhattan?...it should be anticipation and excitment that you are feeling. We could be in store for a tremendous ride this season so sit back and feel confident and enjoy the results.
lee (Aug 25, 2006 9:09:30 AM)
do you think the buckeyes are going to offer any more instate speed guys? any instate OL?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:09:30 AM)
Hi Lee...I would like to see C.J. Peake get an offer...he's got size and speed that is hard to pass up if you ask me. I would guess at this point, the only OL candidate they would offer, if any, would be a project guy like Jeff Spikes, but with the expected haul on the offensive line coming next year...Ohio State might not be interested in working with any projects...so I'm guessing no on any instate offensive linemen.
thegreatcornholio (Aug 25, 2006 9:13:41 AM)
What game(s) will you be attending this weekend? Nice pics from the Dover game.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:13:41 AM)
I'm attending a double-header at Miami of Ohio tonight which pits I believe Moeller against Lakota West and Colerain vs. Mason. Tomorrow, I will be at the three games in Nippert Stadium looking forward to seeing Ben Martin as much as anyone. There was scheduled to be four but because of the situation at Wayne with the teachers, another topic for a later time, they got drilled by St. X last night. It's a shame that student athletes are pawns in a situation like this. That's all I'm going to say about that.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:15:16 AM)
If I wasn't at the Crosstown Showdown this weekend I would have went to Mooney and Walsh tonight and then Glenville and Mentor tomorrow at 1 and Ed's and Bene tomorrow night. But I can't pass up a chance to see all of these Southern teams this weekend.
ManhattanBuck (Aug 25, 2006 9:17:22 AM)
Gary -Whats the latest on Barksdale and Ben Martin ?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:17:22 AM)
Barksdale at this time seems to be set on Texas...at this time anyway...and Ben Martin still is very much in play...OSU, ND and even Florida I guess. I'm looking forward to seeing Martin and talking to him tomorrow.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:22:47 AM)
Did you already comment on Devon Torrence's game last night? I noticed from your photos he isn't a captain, got beat by Ift on a TD pass, and fumbled at a critical time of the game. Guys from Canton South, Carrolton, Lisbon, Canfield, et al. scare me when they are being considered by big time D1 schools. History does not bode well for them to perforn well playing for the perennial powers. Hope that's not to harsh.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:22:47 AM)
Hi edbuck...let me tread lightly here. First of all Devoe Torrence is a football player. Loved what I saw out of him last night. Good size, physical, good speed! He's the real deal. With Devon, I have to admit, I couldn't have been more disappointed really. Maybe my expectations were too high from hearing about how good this kid is for so long. I'm sure he's a very talented individual, he's got good size and he's an athlete but didn't really impress on either side of the ball. He caught a late touchdown pass but fumbled away the ensuing punt by Dover. I'm not a big fan of the NBC league but I believe Devon is legitimate. His younger brother certainly is. Why South didn't run Devoe Torrence the entire game is beyond me. Waters and Devoe are two large physical loads for any team to handle. And Devoe can break a tackle and go the distance at any time like he did in the first half last night.
ohs (Aug 25, 2006 9:23:55 AM)
thanks, how does 09 talent in ohio look?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:23:55 AM)
'09 kids are showing up already as well. Unbelievable. Marcus Hall from Glenville is a top lineman in that class for starters. There are others impressing already as well.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:27:04 AM)
With the possible exception of Thomas, do you think we are going to need to wait until after the season for any commits from the big names on the board?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:27:04 AM)
Yes I do ed because those are really the only players on the board really. Someone like James Scott wants to wait for his decision. Barksdale is in January at the Army AA game if he's chose to play in it. Martin is waiting for some time. There might not be any commits for a while if Thomas and Clifford don't come on board any time soon. I'm hoping OSU is busy sending out junior offers for Sept. 1 in the mail.
ManhattanBuck (Aug 25, 2006 9:32:34 AM)
There is a lot of talk about the "lock" for the fantastic OL from next year. Does that make Clay or Hughes to come to tOSU. If not, who are the stud RBs next yr?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:32:34 AM)
I'm not about to hold my breath for either Clay or Hughes at this point. I think Olgesby will not let Clay get out of state and I really don't think Hughes has a strong desire to come here when it comes down to it. As far as the stud running backs next year...well Devoe Torrence could be one if he wants to play on offense. I'll maintain that Brandon Beachum could also play running back. Darius Ashley is a quality kid but his size could hurt him. There's three names not that any of the three will necessarily be a running back at Ohio State.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:36:27 AM)
Who do you think are the three top recuits in the Youngstown area this year?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:36:27 AM)
Other than Danny Herron, the best recruits are in the junior class. Herron's teammate Sydney Glover is going to Indiana and he's a good player. Maybe Sean Baker has a chance to be Big East. Kitchen from Mooney is a good player but not a top D-I kid. Tomaz Hilton from Rayen is a decent receiver prospect ... MAC or higher. That's all that's coming to mind right now.
ohs (Aug 25, 2006 9:41:10 AM)
can the Sept 1 08 kids commit before singing day in Feb? and if so how many OLs do we get?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:41:10 AM)
Sure they can. My understanding is that a school can informally offer you through your dad or your coach or anyone at any time. They can officially send juniors an offer in writing on Sept. 1. I would say that Michael Adams and Michael Brewster are certain to get Sept. 1 offers. I would consider Shawntel Rowell on Sept. 1 as well but OSU knows they can wait on any Glenville kid they want and still get him. People are high on Sanders so he could get offer... I don't know. And I guess Shurgarts from Texas and Long from Virginia are the other two possibilites. We shall see soon.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:43:02 AM)
Sounds like the Bucks are getting through camp without any major injuries (knock on wood). Sounds like EL has won 'em over and has them in great shape.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:43:02 AM)
It doesn't surprise me if you know anything about Eric Lichter. He's already won many of the kids over but you knew he would because he won many of them over when they trained with him in Cleveland prior to him being in his new position at Ohio State. Kirk Barton is someone that swears by EL ... among others.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:45:08 AM)
Since camp has started, do you think Beannie is gaining ground, losing ground, or is about the same? We know the Tressels are really into the learning part of the game.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:45:08 AM)
Beanie is Beanie...I'm sure he's just solidified his position with the team as a backup to Pittman. I'm sure JT will not ask more of Beans than what he's able to handle.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:45:55 AM)
Is Homan going to be full go by next Saturday?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:45:55 AM)
I'm sure I'll get another update next week sometime but I assume he will be full go next week.
Guest (Aug 25, 2006 9:49:16 AM)
Hypothetically, if we lose one, which one would it be Texas or Iowa?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:49:16 AM)
ManhattanBuck asked which team it would be if OSU lost one...I would say Texas...I don't believe OSU will be awed or intimidated by anyone on their schedule but if they would lose one I would go with the earlier game as the defense would possibly need more time to gel as a unit.
lharbers (Aug 25, 2006 9:51:11 AM)
Can't wait to get the season started 8 days 2 1/2 hours.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:51:11 AM)
Hi Iharbers...I truly am expecting OSU to have a magical season. It's just a week away now. I can't wait either. Seeing a good high school football game like I did last night made the anticipation even greater.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:51:40 AM)
Somehow Penn State seems to be one we are all putting in the W column. They've got a lot of great athletes on that team still.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:51:40 AM)
They can't win in Ohio Stadium...period.
Guest (Aug 25, 2006 9:52:28 AM)
Gary, Do you think we'll have another commit before the first game?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:52:28 AM)
Calibuckeye asked this question before he left...I don't believe so.
lharbers (Aug 25, 2006 9:53:32 AM)
What do you predict for the Texas score?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:53:32 AM)
35-21 Ohio State over Texas.
edbuck51 (Aug 25, 2006 9:54:04 AM)
I've got in OSU 48, NIU 17, how about you?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:54:04 AM)
Sounds about right. Don't know if they'll even get 17 though.
dantheman (Aug 25, 2006 9:56:31 AM)
Duane Long said lots of great things about Hoobler, including after the 2005 Spring game, that Hoobler would be a starting LB in the fall at some point. What happened? Why did he leave or not work out?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:56:31 AM)
Hi dantheman...I don't know the official reason for his departure but I'm guess he read the tea leaves with the move to DE and wasn't interested in pursuing that path. This is just specualtion on my part right now. I'll try to call his HS coach over the weekend. If he wanted to play MLB...he probably realized it wasn't going to happen for him at OSU.
pdm (Aug 25, 2006 9:58:02 AM)
Gary, How many yards do we hold Wolfe to?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 9:58:02 AM)
Hi pdm...under 100 yards and I'm happy. He's really their only chance to remain in the game. If you take him away and don't allow him any big yardage totals, NIU has no shot.
dantheman (Aug 25, 2006 10:00:10 AM)
I think NIU can score 17 with a good QB and great RB because I think our DL is overrated in terms of pass rushing. Losing Carpenter and Kudla, our only two proven sackers, was huge.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 10:00:10 AM)
You really sound excited for next week dan! This is Ohio State and someone like Marcus Freeman or Rob Rose for instance will step up.
pdm (Aug 25, 2006 10:07:03 AM)
Gary, What part of the team do you think might be overrated and why?
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 10:07:03 AM)
I really don't think Ohio State is over rated at all. They should be able to run or pass with equal aplomb on offense and no one is over rating the defense at all as far as I know. The defense is still a question mark overall at this point until they prove otherwise.
GaryHousteau (Aug 25, 2006 10:10:07 AM)
This might be one of my shortest chats in a long time but I have things to tend to here in Columbus before I drive to Oxford later this afternoon. I have to call it a wrap right now but I want thank those of you who chatted with me today. I'm not certain if I'll chat again before the opener with another Thursday night game next week. I'll see Buchtel at Fitch on Thursday. Johnny Adams is another '08 stud to watch out for. Anyway have a great high school football weekend and get ready for the opener in 8 days from now. Talk to you soon. Go Bucks!
