Hello everyone, Duane is now here and the moderation is on, so let's get this chat started! Feel free to send in your questions now for Duane.
ohs (Aug 29, 2006 11:25:44 AM)
Any thoughts on the depth chart? Small is backup at WR?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:27:03 AM)
I have not seen the latest depth chart. If true that us a surprise in the fact that depth is outstanding at WR. On the other hand it is not surprising because I heard he was looking like a Ted Ginn clone out there so far.
osufan27 (Aug 29, 2006 11:27:08 AM)
Hi Duane, What is your take on J. Barkesdale? sounds like he's just playing the game.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:28:20 AM)
I am on record as saying nobody should put him on their commit list until the LOI comes through the fax machine. He is one that is thoroughly enjoying all of this.
TeddyHeisman (Aug 29, 2006 11:28:28 AM)
Duane, let's start this off right - your prediction for Saturday? Give me some stats too, thanks!
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:30:45 AM)
41-24. I am not liking what I am hearing about the secondary and I need to see the LBs. I had a good feeling coming out of spring but all the movement is a concern. Are they preparing them to be able to move into any spot on the field if called on, or is this a matter of not being happy with what they are seeing and looking something that works? We will see.
Frostbuck (Aug 29, 2006 11:30:49 AM)
Duane, glad I finished my round in time to make your chat. My question is about J O Neal, it seems he's having some trouble picking up the defense, what I want to know is the depth of the problem, is he just stumbling or is he really in way over his head?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:32:30 AM)
It is more about him not playing the defense. What I mean is Jamario just wants to go, go go like he did in high school. It is not a matter of knowing the playbook so much as it is a matter of not being where he is supposed to be. I would call it more a discipline problem. Just do your job. He is not getting it.
buckman (Aug 29, 2006 11:32:38 AM)
Whats your take on the 4 OLineman of 2008 talking about committing early? Do you think it will happen? Which one are you most confident of commitment and which one are you least confident in.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:34:06 AM)
I am very confident about the lineman in the class of 2008 and in the Buckeyes standing with them. That is all I am going to say about that right now. Let it unfold.
ohs (Aug 29, 2006 11:34:25 AM)
is Barkesdale is pulling back from Texas we have a better chance of this?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:36:48 AM)
I don't know what to make about this. Twice, not once, I thought this was a done deal for the Buckeyes. Then he says Texas leads. Now he is saying something else. Fans need to forget about Barksdale until January at the earliest. I am not saying he is playing games. I am saying he is so unsure of what he wants to do that fans are just going to drive themselves nuts. It is still August and he has changed his mind how many times?
buckman (Aug 29, 2006 11:36:59 AM)
Ben Martin, if you had to guess now, would you say we get him?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:37:32 AM)
Buckeyes. I think the visit with his mom was significant.
chex1868 (Aug 29, 2006 11:37:39 AM)
A little late getting in....sorry if its already been asked. Duane, what do you think the time table will be for Jr. LB Beachum's (sp?) recruitment? Any chance he verbals early?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:39:59 AM)
I don't think any of those junior LBs gets an offer early. The staff just spent alot scholarships on LBs and the class of '08 is loaded. They will want to see how the current pups are coming along and see who surfaces in the '08 class. Right now it is Torrence. A former Big 10 player in attendance at the game said Devoe Torrence was the best high school player he has ever seen.
ToledoBucknutty (Aug 29, 2006 11:40:14 AM)
Good afternoon Kirk and Duane! It seems that everyone is more concerned about going to Iowa this year than they are going to Texas in week 2. I know the "team is focused only on Northern Illinois," but are you pretty confident about Texas as well? Don't get me wrong, I think we can win them all, but.....
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:42:44 AM)
I was at one time but the unsettled situation on the back 7 has me concerned. Texas is Texas. Like Ohio State, they don't rebuild they reload. Also like Ohio State this is a legendary program coming back into the national spotlight. Back to back wins over Notre Dame had a huge impact on this program. Back to back prime time wins over Ohio State puts the Texas program back up there on its legend pedestal. They will be ready.
ohs (Aug 29, 2006 11:42:56 AM)
can you say more about what you are hearing and not liking on the DB's
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:43:58 AM)
All the moving around. Nobody really stepping forward. Safety is the biggest concern. At one time I heard O'Neal was the only DB they had complete faith in now he is no longer a starter.
osufan27 (Aug 29, 2006 11:44:06 AM)
Any news on early scholarship offers for next year?
osufan27 (Aug 29, 2006 11:44:09 AM)
What LB's will get a look next year? sounds like Torrence, Beachum and Zordich are all possibilities.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:46:12 AM)
Jamiihr WIlliams is a player. So is Steve Yoak and I just saw Nathan Williams. What a beastie he is.
Ganck15 (Aug 29, 2006 11:46:18 AM)
Troy Smith - Set for a Heisman Season!!!!!
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:48:17 AM)
If this season is a successful one it will have Smith in downtown New York right after the season. He is that key. A great year will be because Troy was the best player in the country.
PABuck (Aug 29, 2006 11:48:25 AM)
Do you think the atmosphere at Texas will be as hostile as Penn State last year or Iowa this year?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:49:36 AM)
They are trying not to but the way fans acted here there is a feeling that payback is warranted. You reap what you sow.
DantheMan (Aug 29, 2006 11:49:55 AM)
Duane, as I recall, after the 2005 Spring game, you predicted that Hoobler would be starting at some point during the 2005 season. What happened to this guy?? Too much talent came in this year??
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:51:00 AM)
He was having so many off the field problems. He wanted to be with his family. He could not focus on what he needed to do.
PABuck (Aug 29, 2006 11:51:14 AM)
Last year, Texas was able to neutralize Ted Ginn. Do you think they will be able to do the same in Austin?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:53:28 AM)
No, I don't. We saw Ted Ginn become a receiver instead of a big play guy last year in the Michigan game and the Fiesta bowl. Why do we call them big play guys? Because they make big plays but they disappear in between. Ginn started making the chain moving plays and the help the quarterback plays at the end of the season. He was making the 7,8,9 yard plays in addition to the 79,80,90 yard plays. Now he is going to be so much harder to defense.
chuangtsu (Aug 29, 2006 11:53:50 AM)
Do we get pressure on QBs this year with our D-line? Who gets the job done? ALSO, can we stop the Texas running game?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:55:39 AM)
The defensive line is going to be a monster to block. 4 guys that can make a play is hard to deal with. I think this defense will blitz less because they will be able to get pressure with just 4. I love blitzing defenses as well as anybody but the team that can control the line of scrimmage with 4 players is going to be hard to score points on. I think they can stuff the run and rush the passer. This could be the best defensive line we have seen.
TeddyHeisman (Aug 29, 2006 11:55:45 AM)
Duane, are you content with Antonio Smith starting at corner? It seemed like Washintgon made a real push lately and I was expecting (and hoping) that he would take the starting spot. Thoughts?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 11:58:26 AM)
I think the youth is showing badly right now. You have senior Brandon Mitchell then a bunch of freshman and a couple of sophmores with little playing time. I think Smith and O'Neal are opposite sides of the same coin. Smith is in there, limited physically as he is,because he is playing assignment football. O'Neal, as gifted as any safety we have seen at Ohio State, is not starting because he cannot/will not play assignment football.
Guest (Aug 29, 2006 11:58:33 AM)
Duane, how does our O line recruiting look to shake out this year and next? In and Out of State. By the way you guys do an outstanding job here.
wwt (Aug 29, 2006 11:58:42 AM)
Let's be realistic. Everybody wants all the questions answered (ie secondary) but name a team in the country that you'd want trade places with (note: I didn't say schedule such as WVA)?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:00:06 PM)
For the future? Nobody. Right now I am very afraid that we are going to see plays we don't want to see and after the whistle blows we will see a bunch of athletes looking at each other and talking to one another. There are not alot of reps back there.
Ganck15 (Aug 29, 2006 12:00:19 PM)
I heard so many good things about Vernon Gholston coming out of High School - will we finally see him emerge on the D-Line this year?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:01:11 PM)
Don't be surprised if Gohlston is the best defensive player on this team.
rbuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:01:18 PM)
You say you're worried about he back 7, I understand the DB's and the movement there, but you're worried about the linebackers too??
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:02:44 PM)
I need an answer to why they are moving around so much. Maybe it is about teaching them every position. Maybe its not.
Guest (Aug 29, 2006 12:03:02 PM)
Is Henton going to red shirt? Might he actually play as a true frosh?
Kirk (Aug 29, 2006 12:03:24 PM)
capitalbuck asks "Is Henton going to red shirt? Might he actually play as a true frosh?"
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:04:19 PM)
He will redshirt.
highlander133 (Aug 29, 2006 12:04:30 PM)
So how much pressure does the d-line take off of our young secondary?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:05:51 PM)
How much may be the most important factor in early defensive success. They have the potential, especially if a Mike steps up to clean up the havoc they could reek.
chuangtsu (Aug 29, 2006 12:06:08 PM)
Have you had a chance to see Doug Worthington much? Can he become an effective DT? Would you say that he was more of a run stopper or pass rusher?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:07:03 PM)
I have not seen him since high school. As a high school player he was a pass rusher.
cappy (Aug 29, 2006 12:07:12 PM)
What is up with Mike D'Andrea?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:08:12 PM)
One thing to think about with the secondary. Look who is currently listed as the 4 starters. The most senior player at each position. That says alot about the youth.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:08:32 PM)
Dandrea is likely done. His body is not holding up. He can't make it through practices without the knee swelling up.
ohs (Aug 29, 2006 12:08:55 PM)
do we get Clifford?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:09:07 PM)
I think so.
osufan27 (Aug 29, 2006 12:09:16 PM)
Is there any chance Morgan Williams becomes qualified and gets an offer?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:10:16 PM)
I don't see that happening. When the offer to Herron came I think his shot ended there.
Ganck15 (Aug 29, 2006 12:10:23 PM)
I think Brian Hartline could be an asset to the 2006 Buckeyes with his route running ability and his hands. I'm expecting him to be in on several key plays through out the season - A player that could really hurt a defense if they fall asleep. What do you think?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:10:42 PM)
I think you are right.
ottobuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:10:51 PM)
Where is Holman on the depth chart?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:11:28 PM)
I think he is a starter at the Will or the Mike if healthy.
PABuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:12:04 PM)
With the thought that the "D" may struggle some early, is there any way JT goes against his image and opens up the offense earlier this year? Or will the Bucknuts Board be imploding after an early loss about his conservative offensive approach?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:14:23 PM)
I don't think he goes conservative. I think he goes ball control. I think there may be less big plays because JT is going to want to run it and run clock. He may open it up early in games to get leads but other than that I see alot of ball control unless the defense shows it can't hold. Then we see a shootout.
Frostbuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:14:41 PM)
Duanel ,what do you think Chris Wells means to the Buckeye's in their most important road games this year.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:15:46 PM)
Ball controol. Taking crowds out of games. Wearing defenses down. I don't think I need remind everyone what happened last time JT had a hoss to go to at RB.
ToledoBucknutty (Aug 29, 2006 12:16:01 PM)
Are you, say, 3 losses worried about the back 7? Don't you think this offense can rise above the defensive shortcomings for a while? Shouldn't the scrimmage be encouraging? They are playing against some serious studs every day.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:17:18 PM)
I am afraid of Texas and Iowa. I think Penn State may slide backward. The hope is the offense is going to win games early. 5-0 that is the mantra.
chuangtsu (Aug 29, 2006 12:17:46 PM)
Why does everyone love Laurinaitis? I just don't see it. I think that he gets pushed off the field this year. I think we'll end up with Grant, Freeman, and Homan/Kerr. How do you see it?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:19:26 PM)
He plays assignment football and I think too much is being made out of his short stints last year. He was a freshman. He was not out there to make plays. He was out there to do his job. I think he and Freeman with Homan if healthy end the year as the starters.
lharbers (Aug 29, 2006 12:19:39 PM)
Who do you see as the "must Gets" to finish the recruiting year?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:20:11 PM)
Torrence is a done deal. Martin, Thomas and Clifford.
rbuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:20:28 PM)
Does tOSU really still have a shot at the RB's Clay and Hughes?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:21:43 PM)
I don't see it. Wells is a freshman and commitments from Herron and Saine already? I am not that worked up about Clay. Wisconsin plays FBs at RB but still think of Clay as an LB. I don't like it.
cappy (Aug 29, 2006 12:21:56 PM)
Is Nader Abdallah going to see playing time?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:22:57 PM)
That is up to him. He is up and down. He needs to find some consistency. He had done nothing all spring then had a great spring game. Now I am back to hearing nothing about him. He showed in spring he can play.
osufan27 (Aug 29, 2006 12:23:34 PM)
What's the latest news on Antonio Jeremiah?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:24:18 PM)
There is no news on Jeremiah. It is very simple. He gets his test score, he gets an offer, he commits. There is not much else to it.
highlander133 (Aug 29, 2006 12:24:28 PM)
Enough scary news about the back seven. Most recent depth chart had Chris OR Mo Wells as the #2. Has Beanie shown enough at blocking assignments to be the backup to Pittman?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:25:24 PM)
If Chris is even being considered as the # 2 it is because he is blocking.
TeddyHeisman (Aug 29, 2006 12:25:35 PM)
Duane, I think the changes at LB are more than logical (except for Kerr). James L has the perfect size to play in the middle and the kid has good speed. Freeman fits the OLB description just about to a tee. My only concern is Kerr. Personally, I don't think he lasts too long on the outside. Homan is just too good to be kept off the field...
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:26:39 PM)
Think about a couple of things. This staff is ALWAYS going to tell you what is, not what will/can be. Kerr was at the Will. Homan was hurt. Lets see what happens Saturday.
yooperbuck (Aug 29, 2006 12:26:45 PM)
Hi Duane. With most defenses gearing up their personel to play the spread offenses, seems to me our running game may have a bigger advantage over the next few years. Your thoughts.
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:28:58 PM)
I think we have seen a complete overhaul of the running game. Being able to run is really the key to the spread. We should see an even better offense. Pittman does wear down. He admits it. What is it going to look like when Chris Wells comes off the bench to spell him? As good and maybe an even better rushing attack. If he handles the passing game well he causes so many headaches. He has not caught it alot at yet.
chuangtsu (Aug 29, 2006 12:29:20 PM)
Do we lose Barton this year to the NFL? What about Pittman?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:29:36 PM)
I don't think either go.
kleintime16 (Aug 29, 2006 12:29:43 PM)
does OSU get any other O-lineman this year?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:30:53 PM)
I need to see that happen with no instate elites and the offers to come to the juniors on September 1st. These kids are stupid. Offers to juniors that early signal a super elite player. Most are not going to like that.
hondo (Aug 29, 2006 12:31:01 PM)
Do you think this will be Richardson's year to shine?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:31:59 PM)
I think Richardson needs to shine to stay a starter. There is so much talent at DE you better be looking like an NFL player because they guy behind you surely is.
Ganck15 (Aug 29, 2006 12:32:06 PM)
Do you believe we have a real chance at getting Anthony Davis?
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:33:07 PM)
If Coker stays on or Butch Davis comes back quickly? No. If they fire Coker and hire a no name or drag their feet getting someone in there? Yes.
score7 (Aug 29, 2006 12:33:09 PM)
Will Robert Rose be in the rotation right off the back
Duane (Aug 29, 2006 12:34:13 PM)
I have not heard one way or another. We will see Saturday.

Ok everyone -- sorry to cut it short with so many questions still in the queue, but we need to call it a chat. Thanks for so many great questions and your attendance today; remember if you did not get a question posted that you can send it to Duane via the Ask the Insiders message board. Also, Dave Biddle will be joining us for a chat TONIGHT at 9 pm EST, so stop by then as well.

Can we get a score of this weekends game? PLayers of the game, etc?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:46:41 PM)
My prediction for the final score is 34-13, OSU
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:47:03 PM)
I think Troy will be the standout player offensively and get his Heisman campaign started off on the right foot...
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:48:14 PM)
Defensively, one or two of the young guys is going to have a coming out party. Will it be Vernon Gholston (can we still consider him young with this his third year in the program)? Will it be Lawrence Wilson? Rob Rose? Ross Homan? Larry Grant? One of the DBs? Hard to say but I'll go with Rob Rose.
revbuck (Aug 29, 2006 5:48:19 PM)
Lots of talk about the LB's, Dave, but haven't heard much on Cutis Terry- can you comment on how his camp has gone?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:48:48 PM)
I think he's doing well, much better than last year, and they will use him in spots as a pass-rush specialist. He will play a lot on third downs
Twofifteen (Aug 29, 2006 5:49:10 PM)
predict your biggest disappointment on Saturday...
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:50:01 PM)
One thing I kind of fear is OSU coming out and looking good, but Tressel calling the dogs off in the second half. Then all we will hear leading up to Texas is how the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes struggled against NIU.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:50:44 PM)
Personnel-wise, I could see the young DBs having some growing pains. But I think they'll be just fine.
jd (Aug 29, 2006 5:50:50 PM)
Does any of Homan, Moeller, or Gibson redshirt this year ? Or do they all play ?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:51:20 PM)
Prior to camp, I thought two of them would redshirt -- Moeller and Gibson. But now I think Moeller will play and Gibson will redshirt. Homan will definitely play.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 5:51:25 PM)
Did someone already ask how you see the percentage of carries playing out Sat?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:52:08 PM)
I think it will be something like 15-17 for Pittman, 8-10 for Beanie Wells, and 3-5 for Mo Wells. As the games get bigger, Pittman will see more carries, as will Beanie.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 5:52:20 PM)
I was surprised to see larry grant in the middle.. and that kinda dissapoints me since james is younger.. will he be moved to see the field??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:53:11 PM)
That surprised me as well initially. Then I saw how well Grant filled the hole in the jersey scrimmage. Yes, I think they will move him to the outside at times to get him on the field. He's going to play a lot this year. And you have to like Laurinaitis in the middle. He's going to be a three-year starter and future captain. I love that kid.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 5:53:19 PM)
How has mo wells improved?? we need to use him how fsu uses lornezo booker.. with those swing pass and lots of pitches and screens.. ahs this been occuring??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:54:09 PM)
It's hard to say how he has improved. But yes, I think we will see the staff cater to his strengths a little more this year with runs outside of the tackles, as well as some swing passes. I really think he won't be a big factor on this offense unless there are some injuries, but we shall see.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 5:54:45 PM)
Who is the starting corner opposite jenkins?? i have herad in the practice the other night it was washington.. then bsb said amos (altho i understand its bsb).. and then i saw depth chart it say antonio smith??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:55:52 PM)
I think Washington will open the season as the starter (or at least by Texas). But eventually, Kurt Coleman is going to be the best of the group. He will play a lot this year and I think could be the starter at some point. But no question Washington, Coleman and Amos will all play a lot early in the year. I think Antonio Smith's role will be primarily on special teams.
cant wait (Aug 29, 2006 5:56:05 PM)
With such a drop off in the defence do you think we will see some people get 150 rushing on. Javon Ringer scares me at MSU
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:57:03 PM)
No, because the defensive line will be among the best in the nation. Ohio State will stop the run, my only question is how many passing yards will they give up. A lot will depend on how much of a pass rush they get because the young DBs are going to struggle at some point. But the D-line will prevent any big rushing days.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 5:57:22 PM)
now is Lawrence wilson not starting like said prior to camp beacuse he was injured or because vern looked that good??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:58:03 PM)
I think it's the latter. Gholston was the talk of camp and is primed for a huge year. But with the way Heacock rolls those DLs in and out, there will be plenty of PT available for the backup DEs like Wilson and Rose.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 5:58:18 PM)
is this d gonan b a vanilla d with the playcalling??? or r they ready to unleash diff blitz packages agaisnt texas??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 5:59:09 PM)
I think we will see a somewhat vanilla D on Saturday, but come Sept. 9 in Austin, I expect Heacock will take some chances and will have them flying around.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 5:59:17 PM)
Do you feel that Doug Worthington could make more of an impact than people are thinking this year? He was a beast out of high school.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:00:11 PM)
I don't think he will make much of an impact this year, but I think he could be a big asset in 2007. This year, there is just too many veterans in front of him. I think he will be a DT, and he is already getting snaps there, so I would point to next year when there will be more of a chance for playing time.

Yes, I think so. But it might not be quite fair to put it that way since Barrow is also getting reps at DT.

Do you think we bank about 5 or 6 ships this recruiting season and only take about 15 or 16 guys ? The '08 class seems loaded and we hardly have anybody leaving next year and we should be able to cherry pick instate and pick up some real top-end OOS talent too -- the linemen alone should probably take up 5 spots in '08.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:02:27 PM)
I think they will bank a few, but not quite 5 or 6. As we have seen this year, scholarship limits have a way of working themselves out with transfers, guys who fail out of school, etc. The '08 class is extremely talented and they will bank a few, but not too many.
Twofifteen (Aug 29, 2006 6:02:41 PM)
excuse me (shoulders USFBuckeye out of the way). How about these guys staying out of trouble all off season? Is this all Tressel, or do the upperclassmen get most of the credit?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:03:45 PM)
I hope you just didn't jinx anything! Ha! But there is no question about it: this has been a refershing offseason with the lack of off-the-field noise. Tressel is a high-character man and it burns me when I hear he doesn't care about discipline, etc. Nothing could be farther from the truth.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:04:11 PM)
Have u heard any rumblings about TGII being used in more trick plays?? like antwan randle el??? that reverse that has been used agaisnt ND and MSU (in ginns Fresh yr) could be truned into a pass as well... teams would immediatly remember the play from the film rooma dn jump outa position to stop it while a wr could be running free... what do u think??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:05:18 PM)
I have not personally heard anything about it, but it would not surprise me at all. The staff knows this is his final year and they are going to pull out all the stops and get as much as possible out of him. But don't look for anything too crazy until the end of the year. He might break out a few trick plays for Texas and Iowa, but it seems JT always saves his best for Michigan and the bowl game

hate to say it but NIU will probably cover...Gentleman Jim never runs it up
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:06:19 PM)
I haven't even seen the spread. Guessing it is somewhere around -17, but I picked the Buckeyes to win by 21, so I guess I disagree with you. Then again, you are absolutely correct about JT not running it up. He will call off the dogs and get them ready for Texas.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:06:25 PM)
Give us ur take on Barksdale....
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:07:19 PM)
I've said all along I think he will be a Buckeye and I'm sticking with that. But it's turning into quite the soap opera, which is never good. Although, from the few times I've talked to Joseph he seems like a good kid. I think he will come to OSU, but he will keep everyone sweating until the AA Bowl.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 6:07:56 PM)
Dave, of the DBs the Bucks are in on, in what order would you rate Oliver, Evege, Clifford, Scott? I know they play different positions, but on overall potential/ability.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:08:53 PM)
I don't know too much about James Scott, but I would rank them Clifford, Evege, Oliver. And I am actually very confident that Nate Oliver will be a good player at OSU. When the staff targets someone early like they did with him, it always seems to turn out well. But there are concerns about his speed and you can't ignore that.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:09:18 PM)
Bottom line it for me...What's the final score in Austin Sept 9?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:09:53 PM)
27-17 OSU. And it won't feel that close. Colt McCoy might be a good QB down the road, but the Buckeyes will give him a rude awakening to D-I football.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:10:07 PM)

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:11:06 PM)
That surprised me a little bit. He has looked OK the few times we've been able to watch practices, but I thought his primary role would be on special teams. And I guess I still feel that way. The top four WRs will be Ginn, Gonzo, Hall and Robiskie. In fact, I think Robo is pushing hard to be the No. 3.
buckeyeD (Aug 29, 2006 6:11:27 PM)

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:12:10 PM)
My buddy who is addicted to football gambling (I'm not joking) tells me that Iowa State (-6) is a lock over Toledo because of Toledo's young QB. But I would never bet against Toledo. They look good every time I see them.

How will the Buckeyes attack the Texas QB?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:13:39 PM)
It will be the same thing we saw last year. Blitzes from all angles. Heacock loves the safety blitz off the slot. Linebackers will come from different spots. I just think the Buckeyes have been smarting about that Texas loss for a full year and will come more than ready to play defensively and offensively.
nhbkye (Aug 29, 2006 6:13:52 PM)

I think to throw a bone (pun intended) to all of the OSU fans in Cleveland.

what do you think about O'Dowd and Davis?? do we have a good shot at either?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:15:50 PM)
OSU's track record with OOS OLs is less than impressive. If I'm betting my life I say they go 0-2, but both of these guys seem to have genuine interest. Davis is from the same high school as Malcolm Jenkins, which has to help. O'Dowd is always talking up OSU. I want to say OSU will get one of them, but I'll be a party pooper and say 0-2.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:16:28 PM)
The Bucks secondary is questioned at this point, but don't you think they can match or exceed the play of last year. It did not seem to be stellar last year, except for Donte Whitner.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:17:46 PM)
I think they can be close to last year's group. We won't see a drop-off from Nate Salley to Nick Patterson. Malcolm Jenkins is a year older and a year better. Whitner is a big loss as you mentioned. And there is no cornerback even close to as good as Youboty yet, even though he didn't have a great year. There are going to be some growing pains in the secondary, no question, but I like the talent and because of the D-line dominating the line of scrimmage, I think that will help the secondary and they will be fine.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:18:01 PM)
begining with the fresh who just came in.. how many potential first round picks over the next few yrs do we have on this Dline??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:18:31 PM)
I think Pitcock will be a late first round pick. Then you have Gholston, Wilson and Rose who all have that kind of potential. I would guess 2 of the 4 will be first rounders.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 6:18:49 PM)
Jumping way ahead here - how do you see the Iowa defense shaping up?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:20:18 PM)
I think they are going to struggle defensively to be quite frank. Iowa is going to be excellent offensively, but their D-line is undersized and they have to replace Greenway and Hodge at LB. And unlike OSU, they don't have a tremendous amount of defensive talent coming up. That said, Kirk Ferentz will have his defense playing well enough to be one of the best teams in the Big Ten. I think the game at Iowa will be OSU's biggest hurdle of the season. But Iowa does have some major questions on D.
cantwait (Aug 29, 2006 6:20:40 PM)
Last year i thougth Texas handled our offence pretty well. They have 8 back on D and we have 8 back on offence. why do you think we will be that much better. (although TSmith has a lot more expericance now) They did keep tg in check as well
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:21:22 PM)
Last year was a complete disaster with the QB shuffling... and OSU still almost won. This is a completely different Troy Smith and the 'Horns will have to face him for the full 60 minutes, not just 30.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:21:42 PM)
It seems like there has been some nice talk about Anderson Russell. What will his contribution look like this season?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:22:40 PM)
He is going to make a big impact this year as the nickel back, or possibly as a starting corner. Great speed and is always around the ball. He didn't play much DB in high school, he was strictly a RB, so he is still learning his way. But expect big things out of him this year and in the future.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:22:57 PM)
am i the only one that thinks it is a defeinite possibility for ND to lose to GT on staurday??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:23:43 PM)
No, I think that is a possibility. G-Tech could be one of the suprise teams in college football this year. They have a top 10 NFL pick in WR Calvin Johnson and a returning QB in Reggie Ball. And Tenuta is a decent defensive coordinator as well.
npbuck (Aug 29, 2006 6:24:04 PM)

mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:24:25 PM)
Who will be our sack leader this season? I hope quite a few guys have a realistic shot at it.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:25:14 PM)
Gotta go with Gholston. He could be right around double-digits if he stays healthy. Richarson will get his share, as will Wilson and Rose. But I think Gholston will be the big weapon off the edge.
caryl (Aug 29, 2006 6:25:39 PM)
I am very interested in the new S & C coach affect on the players and how do you think that will translate on the field? Will it help in that Texas heat?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:26:44 PM)
Talk about a guy getting rave reviews! I have heard nothing but great things about Eric Lichter. He really stresses explosion to the players. They all love him and say they can already see improvements. And I think his history of working with high-profile athletes helped him garner immediate respect from the OSU players.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:26:55 PM)
We've all questioned Troy Smith's early play, but not now. Does he carry us all the way and pick up the Heisman?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:27:51 PM)
I'm not sure about the Heisman, but I think he will lead OSU to the national championship (with a 12-1 record) and will go down as the best QB in OSU history. I bet his stats won't be great enough to win the Heisman, but he will be invited to New York.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 6:28:19 PM)
In terms of receivers, TG went from about 25 catches as a FR to 50 something as a SOPH, Gonzo had about 20 something last year. Do they both continue the upward trend...TG with about 75 catches this year and Gonzo with 50 something? It doesn't seem our offense can create that many catches. Thoughts?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:29:09 PM)
I think we will see Ginn with about 60-65 receptions, and Gonzo somewhere in the 40's. The Buckeyes could put up big passing numbers if they wanted, but I see them using a power running game a lot. They will mix it up, but I wouldn't expect crazy passing stats this year.
section22 (Aug 29, 2006 6:29:15 PM)
Has Stan White Jr been used as a receiver coming out of the backfield in the past?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:30:07 PM)
Not very much at all. He always looks decent in that role to me, and was a good HS TE, but he is primarily just a lead blocker. But maybe that will change this year with OSU's lack of depth at TE. I could see White being used out of the backfield a little more, but he won't have any more than 10 receptions this year.

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:33:06 PM)
He has definitely stepped up his play, the question is how much. I think he will have a solid year, but he's getting pushed hard by Wilson and Rose. The thing I like about Jay is that the coaches have praised his work ethic this camp. You didn't hear that before. Maybe this is the year he realizes his potential. Because he is definitely a force at 6-6, 280 as a DE
SimonPhoenix (Aug 29, 2006 6:33:16 PM)
Are Freeman and Lauranitis pretty set in their starting positions?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:33:38 PM)
Yes, I think so. Grant will push both of them, but I think they will be starting together for the next three years.
Golden (Aug 29, 2006 6:33:47 PM)
DB- I'm concerned about our pass defense early- by mid season we'll be OK, but early in the season look for missed coverages and problems w crossing patterns where teamwork is involved. What's your take?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:34:26 PM)
I couldn't agree with that more. Overall, we will look back on this group as a solid secondary. But there will be growing pains early in the year, there is no question in my mind. But I just think the D-line (as well as the offense) will be more than enough to make up for it.
reallytired (Aug 29, 2006 6:34:40 PM)
What other team besides The Ohio State University would you like to see in the national championship game? In other words who would you like Ohio State to face in the national championship game to make it close to the greatest game ever played in 2002?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:34:57 PM)
I'd like to see another Notre Dame matchup. Let's make it 4-0 Buckeyes in my lifetime.

I'm psyched about our special teams this year, especially punt return. Question is, who would you like to see coming after the punter from the ends? Grant and Russell?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:35:51 PM)
Yes, you've got to get Larry "six blocked kicks per year" Grant in there. I also like Russell. Looked to me at the scrimmage that Kurt Coleman is also being used as a punt blocker, and a field goal blocker off the edge.

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:37:07 PM)
I think that is somewhat accurate. But I would just say that Tate is a talented, yet inconsistent quarterback. Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, I think we will see his "A" game on Sept. 30. He is a senior and will be ready after the embarrasment last year of thowing down his helmet in disgust, final score, etc.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:37:19 PM)
I have heard that texas styles there defense sorta like tampa bay... with smaller guys primarily playing a lot of cover 2.. this accurate??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:38:13 PM)
They play some Tampa 2 with the linebackers dropping deep in coverage. But I think they will have some new wrinkles this year and will mix it up. They like to blitz and they have good D-linemen.
npbuck (Aug 29, 2006 6:38:26 PM)
Is it normal for a big college to lose players this late in the year (Hoobler, Frost, Haw). Which one of those do you think that we could have used the most. It seems that we are only a injury away from needing all three.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:39:08 PM)
I would say that is very unusual. We joke that they have all been "optioned to the minor leagues" but the fact is that one of them could be missed if injuries pop up. I think Frost is a big loss, but that was his own doing.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:39:39 PM)
Haw only would have played if there were multiple injuries, and I think the staff told him as much. Probably same deal for Hoobler.
Pastor Jack (Aug 29, 2006 6:39:56 PM)
It is often said that a football team make a tremendous improvement from the 1st to the 2nd game. What do you anticipate seeing the first game? Sloppy on O, false starts, route timing issues? Or do you see the opposite? Any thoughts?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:41:06 PM)
Starting the game with a delay of game has become a tradition at OSU. Ha. I think we will see some sloppiness on both sides, but overall I think it will be a clean game. OSU usually starts slow, but I think they will come out ready to play on Saturday.
The Oracle Monkey (Aug 29, 2006 6:41:20 PM)
Howdy Dave--I have to call you out for the Nugent line: "arguably the best kicker" in Ohio State history. Now down to business...If you had to call your shot right now, how many rushing yards do Pittman and Wells get respectively?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:41:36 PM)
Hey, that was quickly corrected to "definitely the best kicker" Ha!
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:41:59 PM)
I will go with 1,330 for Pittman (one under last year) and 750 for Wells.
Boobah (Aug 29, 2006 6:42:49 PM)
Three defensive concerns,1) will the linebackers consistently take good angles to the ball carrier; 2) will their be mental breakdowns in the secondary allowing easy touchdowns in the early games, and 3) can the corners man cover well enough to permit an ultra pressure type of defense. What saith thou?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:43:45 PM)
1. Overall, yes, I think the LBs will be assignment sound and will take good angles. But there is going to be a dropoff from last year, you are fooling yourself to think otherwise. Overall a good corps of LBs, but not on the same level as last year....
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:44:22 PM)
2. Yes, I think there will be some mental breakdowns in the secondary early in the year. They just need to limit how many. Again, they will be a solid group, but there will be some growing pains...
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:45:05 PM)
3. No, I don't expect any man-press coverage this year. OSU doesn't like to do it much anyway, and they won't do it with young corners (even though Malcolm Jenkins is very good). Look for a lot of cover 2.

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:46:19 PM)
I am somewhat concerned, and I think they will take some lumps early in the year, but overall for the season I think we will see a solid unit. The talent is there, no question. It's just a matter of how fast they came come together as a unit.
ohs (Aug 29, 2006 6:46:23 PM)

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:46:47 PM)

mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:48:59 PM)
Texas has a very good D-Line. Do you think we will be more successful running or passing in Austin?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:49:30 PM)
I think the big plays will come via passing. OSU will grind out the running game and try and control the clock, but Troy will hit a couple big ones deep which could be the difference.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 6:49:40 PM)
I don't know the history here, but 1 game into the HS season, Jordan Mabin looks very good...is he too small to get an offer?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:50:26 PM)
Gary tells me he is good enough for OSU and that's good enough for me. I think Mabin could be a good college corner, but who knows. Gotta love that speed and he is just a true football player who has rushed for over 1,000 yards since he was a freshman.
jay (Aug 29, 2006 6:50:34 PM)
Anderson Russell blocked 2 punts at the night practice. What future do you see for him?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:51:41 PM)
He's going to be a big-time player. Still learning the nuances of playing safety after being strictly a RB in high school, but he's a big hitter with great speed (4.37) who is always around the ball. We will see him as the nickel back this year and he could be a starting safety by midseason. And he will play a lot on special teams as well. Another good get from Georgia.
grosh76 (Aug 29, 2006 6:51:47 PM)
So, Freeman, Laurinatis, Homan for the next 3 years?....what a threesome!

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:53:06 PM)
Absolutely. This is what Tressel has been waiting for since '02. He is still not going to be a riverboat gambler, but with a rookie kicker and a bruising tailback, we could see him go for it more on fourth-and-short.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 6:53:25 PM)
I think on D we will b ok, since in practice our D faces one of the best offenses in the country everyday... We most likely wont face an equally explosive and power mix of offense all yr.. so when the games coem they should b prepared.. what u think dave??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:54:07 PM)
That's a good point and I've heard some of the players point that out. And it goes both ways. Troy Smith says he was the QB he was at the end of last year because he had to practice against the OSU D with six future draft picks the entire year.
SimonPhoenix (Aug 29, 2006 6:54:23 PM)
You said you see Grant pushing them. Could he possibly move back outside and take over for Kerr, or do you expect Homan will be the one pushing Kerr? That would be awesome to see Freeman and Lauranitis be 3 year starters. However, with the NFL calling, hard to imagine both being here the next 3 years. But I guess we can dream : )
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:55:23 PM)
Fickell says he is going to use a rotation to begin the season and I believe him. Yes, Grant could definitely move to one of the outside spots. I think they are going to roll players through like what we've seen from the D-line the last four years and about 4-5 'backers will play a lot.
bigskybuckeye (Aug 29, 2006 6:55:41 PM)
I heard Steve H. say on Buckeye Roundtable that we are all expecting too much if we think the defense is going to pick up where the 2005 defense left off. If this is true ,is it a worry that we wll be ready for Texas early on? I see it that if we can't pressure the young quarterback with minimal people we might be in trouble.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:56:47 PM)
Well, the defense won't be playing as well as it was at the end of the 2005 season, but it won't have to right away. Texas won't have Vince Young and their offense is going to look completely different with a rookie QB. OSU's defense is going to have some rough times early in the year, at least the back 7, but the offense and defensive line will more than make up for it.
buckeyeD (Aug 29, 2006 6:57:19 PM)
Who do you feel we get out of BMartin, Jeremiah, Brent, and Still in '07... And, Brewster, Adams, Shugarts, Sanders, and Long in '08?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:57:54 PM)
I think they will get Ben Martin and Antonio Jeremiah this year, assuming AT gets the test score he needs to quality and pass OSU admissions. For '08, tough to say. Way too early.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 6:58:04 PM)
Dave...will we start seeing a wave of OSU O-Lineman on the All-American lists? The depth is encouraging.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 6:59:31 PM)
It really is. Just looking at this year's starters, you might have four future NFL players in the group: Boone, Datish, Downing, Barton. OK, Heater, you will DEFINITELY have four future NFL players. Ha. Then, you also have Rehring off the bench, and Skinner, who could both be NFLers in their own right. Gotta love what Bollman and Co. have done with the O-line. Teaching all of them to play multiple spots has allowed them to recruit less players.
The Oracle Monkey (Aug 29, 2006 6:59:59 PM)
I know that we only lost two starters on the o-line, but one was the director of the line as the center. Can Datish make it a seemless transition from Mangold? Also, if you were starting a college football team and had to pick one player from the Ohio State roster to start it with, who would it be and why? (I'll stay away from the Barbara Walters questions like "If you were a tree, what kind would you be?")
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:01:01 PM)
It won't be a seemless transition, and I say that just out of respect to Nick Mangold. But Doug Datish will get the job done this year and then some. Center will not be a problem this year. The Buckeyes don't have a first-round draft pick playing the position, but Datish will be more than solid.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:01:24 PM)
As for any player on OSU's team to start a team: Troy Smith. But I would only get him for one year. Better do well that year!

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:02:47 PM)
I think he's a good player and it would have been nice to have him here. But it's ludicrous to think he is better than Chris Wells.
Pastor Jack (Aug 29, 2006 7:03:05 PM)
Is it fair to say that last year was really our year to win the NC, and because of the selfishness of a few, that was thrown away? NOW, this year looks good, but with the questions on D, might it be asking too much to out of our talented but inexperienced Defense?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:03:57 PM)
Well, I don't think it's asking too much out of the young D, because I have OSU winning it all. And this might not be a great OSU team, but I think they will be plenty good enough to win it all this year in what could be a "down year" in college football. I think OSU will lose a game, yet will still win it all.
5starbuck (Aug 29, 2006 7:04:13 PM)
I thought I heard on 1460 today coming back from out of town that Ross Homan was in the two deep now... as was Ray Small... Do you believe that is accurate?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:04:34 PM)
Yes, Homan is bracketed with Tyler Moeller at WLB, and Small is bracketed with Robiskie at WR.
bigskybuckeye (Aug 29, 2006 7:04:44 PM)
I see that small is in the two deep. For awhile the talk was about redshirting him. Did he impress coaches that much in practice that they want to get him on the field now?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:05:39 PM)
It surprised me a little bit, but I think they feel that they better use him while they can. Not saying he will have any academic issues, but you never know. I think's Small's primary role will be on special teams this year. I just do not see him jumping Robiskie for the #4 WR spot.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 7:05:48 PM)
whats the word on mr. Colt McCoy?? I have herad all he has been doing is throing quick swing and screen passes.. is this tru??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:06:49 PM)
I've heard he's actually looked solid during camp. But we'll see how he responds when the lights come on. In the clips I've seen, he has a decent arm, nothing special, but decent. He also has pretty good mobility. I think he will be a good QB down the road, but he is going to take some serious lumps on Sept. 9.
grimes (Aug 29, 2006 7:07:02 PM)
Does JT protect Beanie from himself by not using him too much in garbage time . He seems to use his body like a battering ram(smile) and may need to be forced to keep fresh for later in the season. seems like Mo W would be more expendable(if you know what I mean). Even Pitt was wearing out by the end of his Freshman year and he didn't get that many carries.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:08:12 PM)
You might be on to something there. We will definitely see Chris Wells even when the game is no longer in doubt, but I don't think they are going to use him too much and expose him to injuries during a blowout. So, yes and no. He will still play in blowouts, but they will be cautious with him so they have him when it really counts. But you have to get him reps sometime and Pittman is going to be the workhorse in big games early in the year.

if ted ginn doesnt sow up till the 2nd half the season this year how much trouble will we be in
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:09:15 PM)
A lot of trouble. But I think it's a moot point because Teddy looks great. I didn't think it was possible for him to get quicker, but it appears as though he has. He has turned himself from talented football player, to top-flight wide receiver. His route running looks great, he's catching everything, etc.
bigskybuckeye (Aug 29, 2006 7:09:23 PM)
How do you see the Texas game going? If we come out of there with a win do you think this springboards us to a great year?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:10:20 PM)
Yes. This was the swing game last year and the same will be true this year. The Buckeyes COULD lose that game and still get back in the NC race. In fact, I predicted they would win it all at 12-1. But I think the Texas game is a must-win. Save that one loss for the Big Ten slate.
Pastor Jack (Aug 29, 2006 7:10:28 PM)
Yes, I know it is insane to be thinking about next year, but after we win the NC this year (hehe), what kind of team will be have in the coming years? TG will likely be gone, as well as TS. What does the future hold for 07 and 08??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:11:16 PM)
I think the '07 team will be in for a serious rebuidling year. Which under Tressel probably means 9-3 at worst. Ha. In '08, I think they could be back in the NC picture. So, enjoy this year, because next year could be rough.

DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:13:01 PM)
Gonzo is up there, as well as Ray Small
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:13:31 PM)
The strongest? I've heard Tyler Whaley. He was third strongest on the team last year behind Kudla and Sims... and I don't think any true frosh could outlift him.
Twofifteen (Aug 29, 2006 7:13:44 PM)
Realistically, do you see ANYONE kicking to Ginn this year? On a side note, how about putting Shoenhoft and Boeckman back in the diamond, just to throw it back to Ted? ;^)
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:14:36 PM)
With the smaller tees, they might have to, unless they squib all game. I think he will get some chances on kickoffs, but I think most teams are going to punt towards the sidelines. Of course, after a couple 10-yard shanks, they might need to re-think the strategy. OSU wins either way.
5starbuck (Aug 29, 2006 7:14:45 PM)
Dave ... hate to put you on the spot ... but what do you think about the Texas game? Score prediction if possible? ..
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:14:59 PM)
I'm going with 27-17 OSU.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 7:15:23 PM)
Our offense is loaded...What will Texas do to try to stop us? And how will we exploit their attempt?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:16:13 PM)
I think it will come down to execution. Texas will blitz, but they also have a good D-line and will try and control the line of scrimmage with four DLs. I don't expect either team to be very tricky.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:17:07 PM)
I just look for OSU to mix it up against the 'Horns. Tressel tends to coach very loose in big games. I look for a few big plays from Troy, and a grind-it-out running game. OSU won't get a tremendous amount of rushing yards against Texas, but they will control the clock.
grimes (Aug 29, 2006 7:17:15 PM)
Was the team too amped up last year for TX. Seemed they played tight. Hope for a more loose and focused team this game?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:17:47 PM)
I think they were too up for it. And the QB shuffling didn't help. It seemed like OSU never got into a flow offensively, yet they still almost won the game. Should have won the game.

Dave, I'll ask this question again.....what are you hearing out of practice that the rest of us are not?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:20:08 PM)
Some might know this, but Todd Boeckman is right on Zwick's heels to be the backup. Surprising on a couple fronts: I thought JZ would be the unquestioned No. 2. Also, I thought Schoenhoft would be ahead of Boeckman.

Looking like Boeckman. Although, I wouldn't count any of them out. I have always been impressed with Schoenhoft and figured he would be ahead of Boeckman by now. Also hearing GREAT things about Henton. I can't imagine him starting as a frosh, but he is receiving rave reviews from Daniels.

I'm a little nervous about the place kickers this year with there inexperience. Do you see a year like nuge had in his first year? Will we be in trouble if we need a field goal in a pressure situation with there youth . Will Tressel's in game planning change because of this?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:23:59 PM)
Pettrey has looked excellent. But yes, I think he will be a little inconsistent this year. Again, he's been nothing but consistent in practice, but it's different when the lights come on for real. I have a hard time imagining a freshman kicker not having growing pains. Even Mike Nugent, who Heater refers to as "one of the best kickers to play at OSU since 2000," struggled as a freshman.
USFbuckeyeBG (Aug 29, 2006 7:24:08 PM)
what does TGII do first, retrun kick for td, Reception for TD, or Punt return for td??
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:24:20 PM)
I'll say reception for TD. That will be the "easiest" way to score.
5starbuck (Aug 29, 2006 7:24:29 PM)
Dave ... I have a feeling after the sucess of Troy that we will see another dual threat QB in the mix ... Your thoughts about what the coaches and maybe even the players think about Henton up to this point?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:25:13 PM)
I'm hearing nothing but great things about Henton. Can he start as a freshman in '07? That's a little hard to imagine, but he will defintely be in the discussion. They see somewhat of a Troy Smith clone and they are happy.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 7:25:28 PM)
Dave .. if memory serves, I think our return game was pretty good against TX last yr. How about this year?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:26:51 PM)
Yes, I thought Texas' special teams were sloppy last year and they were fortunate that a couple of somewhat long returns from OSU were called back. They also almost botched a return at the goal line that could have resulted in a safety. This is another thing to like about a Tressel team. He will out-coach Mack Brown in the special teams battle. Last year was a fluke for Brown IMO. He's not a good coach.
jay (Aug 29, 2006 7:26:56 PM)
Which assistant coach do you think will get the next opportunity to HC?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:27:22 PM)
Darrell Hazell. And he could be out the door as early as this year. He is saying all the right things, but I think he's destined to be a head coach very soon.
The Oracle Monkey (Aug 29, 2006 7:27:32 PM)
I think you're the fastest typist as well. Maybe you could proxy type for Steve and Duane. :-) (Just kidding you, fellas)

That has to be Steve hands down.
mdhbucknut (Aug 29, 2006 7:28:11 PM)
Nothing personal, but why was Hamby on the field against TX last year? Do you see Nicol with a few catches in Austin?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:29:08 PM)
Well, Frost was still in the doghouse, and Brandon Smith wasn't ready, Nicol was hurt, you have to go with the fifth-year senior. Hamby had a rough year, but you can't fault the coaching staff for putting him out there. At one point in time, it looked like he was going to be a very good player for OSU.
lrb (Aug 29, 2006 7:29:37 PM)
Does Teddy need a few reps on D to win the Heisman? I just don't think he sees enough touches from punts (maybe kickoff's)
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:30:17 PM)
I just don't see any way he will win the Heisman. Troy is a solid candidate, but Teddy won't get enough touches. You are right, playing some D would help, but I don't see that happening.
grimes (Aug 29, 2006 7:30:40 PM)
seems the special teams were not as special in a gamechanging way last year. (not bad but not as gamechanging) Not the specialists but as a team. Is this because TGII forced opponents to focus on them more or we focused less?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:31:24 PM)
I think it was a little of both. Every team focused on slowing down OSU's special teams. And, Ginn didn't have a great year, especially early, and with the drops at Michigan.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:32:14 PM)

Please tell me Musberger is not calling the game in Austin...who's ABC's team for Sat nights?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:33:15 PM)
I am not sure if Brent will be calling the game or not. But come on, take it easy on Brent. He coined "Holy Buckeye" and was praising OSU throughout the Fiesta Bowl, calling out Weis for saying OSU wasn't the best defense they had faced, etc. I know Brent can be over the top, but I like him.

The Bengals look sweet.......AJ did not seem to do too much....Your take?
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:36:52 PM)
The Bengals look GREAT! I was worried about Palmer, despite the positive reports, but it's almost as if the injury never happened. He is at least the second-best QB in the NFL and is gaining on Manning (don't even tell me Brady is better than Palmer).
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:37:34 PM)
A.J. did seem a bit tentative last night. The reports on him have not been positive, but you just know he is going to show up and have 10 tackles per game. The Packers shouldn't worry about him. He will be a stud for years.

Not in 2007, most likely. I think next year will be a down year.
DaveBiddle (Aug 29, 2006 7:38:10 PM)

Not sure about a plethora, but it will be an important weekend. They might not even get any commitments right away after the PSU game, but there could be a very good long-tern effect from OSU's point of view. Sounds like they are pulling out all the stops and bringing in several big names like O'Dowd.

I figured he would be the No. 2 receiver opposite Ward, but I recently heard Holmes is not even in the two-deep. He is running with the third and fourth teams. But my guess is that is just a smokescreen/motivational factor from Cowher and Holmes will play a lot this year.
