Housteau Chat Archive: Aug. 30

Bucknuts staffer Gary Housteau stopped by Wednesday afternoon for a chat session with premium subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:05:58 AM)
I'm so amped for Saturday it's unbelievable. I just hope Ernesto stays away from Columbus...any remnants of it that is.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:10:08 AM)
Was quite surprised to see David Arnold commit to Northwestern. Good for him. The Wildcats are trying to get first dibs on anyone in Ohio that the Buckeyes apparently aren't interested in. They have Browne, Arnold and want Mabin really bad as well. Fitzgerald knows the deal already.

mansfieldbuckeye (Aug 30, 2006 10:17:12 AM)
What's the latest recruiting scoop?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:17:12 AM)
That's sort of a broad-based question there.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:17:41 AM)
OSU definitely gets Solomon Thomas and I would say Clifford as well.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:17:53 AM)
That's good news for sure.

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:19:26 AM)
Ok agry (Lets try this again!) - The Huskies got first possession and went 3 and out. They punt an amazing punt for a touchback. Buckeye football, 1st and 10 on their own 20. What play do you run first? Does Coach Tressel call anything other than Pittman Off-Tackle Right?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:19:26 AM)
I'm thinking JT makes a statement with Troy Smith on the very first play. Down the field it goes. Then he goes with Pittman off tackle.

Guest (Aug 30, 2006 10:20:56 AM)
Is Joe Daniels doing any recruiting work?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:20:56 AM)
Welcome section22...that's better than section 8 obviously. I'm sure Coach Daniels is doing everything he's physically able to do at this point and I would believe that would mean that he is taking care of his recruiting responsibilies be it text messages or whatever at this time.

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:21:58 AM)
If I have my countdown clock set correctly...its 3 days - 1 hour - 59 minutes - and 05 seconds to the start of the game. ..

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:21:58 AM)
What a tremendous season Buckeye fans could be in store for. I know wire-to-wire sounds so unbelievable but why not? How great would that be with this group of players.

mansfieldbuckeye (Aug 30, 2006 10:23:45 AM)
Since Jamario was brought up, what about his little brother, from what I hear he is extremely fast. He is purely track or is football in his future?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:23:45 AM)
His little brother has been hanging around for the past three years that I've known Jamario now and he looks, right now, like he's going to be taller and leaner than his big brother. I've been hearing a lot of good things about his brother and I'm sure he'll have a football future. At least that's what his father tells me all the time.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:24:53 AM)
It's taken forever but it seems like we're starting to get a full complement of people in the chat room now...or a decent amount anyway. I apologize for the early technical difficulties and I want to thank those of you who have hung around to get to this point.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:26:48 AM)
If you missed it earlier...I was surprised to see David Arnold commit to Northwestern. Good for him. It seems like the Wildcat program is getting first dibs on all of the players OSU does not seem to be interested in. They have Browne already, now Arnold and they're going after Mabin hard as well. Fitzegerald seems to know what's going on already. Recruit Ohio. Good for David Arnold once again. Great kid.

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:27:34 AM)
Will there be any recruits at the game?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:27:34 AM)
I'm sure there will be but I'm not privy to any certain list yet.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:29:20 AM)
Gary, whats happening? OSU 31 NI 17. NI scores late TDs to make it look close, whats your guess for this weekend?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:29:20 AM)
Hi Buckgrad...more like 41-14 in a walk. C'mon folks if this is the year OSU cannot mess around with a MAC team even if they have a top RB and solid QB and a talented OT. OSU's offense will punish this defense into submission. And Quin Pitcock will not allow the defense to give up major yardage to Wolfe. OSU in a rout.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:30:40 AM)
Did we ever find out if Ray Small was wearing #1? If it was him, is that his # or is he just wearing it for scout purposes?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:30:40 AM)
Hi buckgrad. It sure looked like Small to me. The camera angle made him look bigger than Teddy but he's not. My guess is that he is emulating Wolfe and being that the defense is in Red, Small was wearing a white number one for Wolfe. That's speculation on my part.

thegreatcornholio (Aug 30, 2006 10:32:48 AM)
Hi Gary, Good Wed. afternoon to you. Which HS games will you be attending this weekend?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:32:48 AM)
Hello the greatone...I'm off to see the wizard... I mean I'll be off to see the Indians so I can watch Brandon Saine get off in person. I love this kid and I hope he put all the receiver talk to bed after last weekend. Let him come in and redshirt to get space between him and Beanie and then let the good times roll. Can you believe OSU's running backs next year if Pittman sticks around?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:34:08 AM)
Saine still needs to add a little flash to his game...right now he seems to be mostly a north-south guy with speed to turn the corner and he's gone. I'm anxious to see how physical he is in person and if he has much shake to him at all.

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:35:34 AM)
What's the most important thing the Buckeyes can take away from this game? No disrespect to NIU intended but is it enough of a challenge to prepare the team and especially the defense for Texas?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:35:34 AM)
To get the defense reps. The offense will try to control the ball on the ground but they will inevitably break tackles and score quicker than they want to. How in the world in NIU going to stop this locomotive. That's what it all comes down to. No shot. See ya! Wouldn't want to be ya!

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:37:16 AM)
over under on carries for Chris Wells 10, AP 15 and M. Wells 7

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:37:16 AM)
Hi buckgrad... over, over, under! Beanie will rock and roll on Saturday. But so will Pittman. Seriously guys. Are you ready for some football! Smash-mouth football here we come.

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:39:08 AM)
If Saine redshirts what do you see in the future for Boom Herron?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:39:08 AM)
Hard work, never quit, do whatever he can to see the field. He's like his brother David at MSU. He'll do whatever it takes. He'll compete. That's all you can ask for. He can catch the ball out of the backfield that's for sure. He'll complement Saine well.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:41:38 AM)
Gary, whats the story with Boom? I know it was just week 1 but an OSU caliber RB should be able to get his yds no matter what in a high school game.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:41:38 AM)
I hear ya buck and I'm very concerned. I was concerned when he didn't even play in the Mentor/Hoover scrimmage the week before the opener. Are you kidding me? This kid hasn't had any meaning carries in the last two games. And here comes Glenville with a huge chip on their shoulder. If Hines isn't on the field on defense for Glenville this week than I don't know what to say about that. How can you not play Hines on defense?

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 10:45:07 AM)
Do you think coach tressel would ever experiment with a Double-Wing formation? Any two of Ginn, Pittman or M Wells playing HB on the wing and Pittman/C Wells as TB? Gives a lot of interesting options...

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:45:07 AM)
Shame on you for saying Double-Wing in this forum. Smile! No need to get ancient just to give TGII some touches. Put him in the I on occasion, in the shot gun with Troy out wide. Reverses, Bubbles...I'd show it all. Give Texas something to really think about. There's no need to surprise people or even use TGII as a decoy. OSU should play from a dominant position on offense right from the outset and make teams worry about what they have to defend and spend time in practice doing that.

thegreatcornholio (Aug 30, 2006 10:45:55 AM)
A quiz for you! The first offensive play will be: a) run B) pass or C) delay of game.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:45:55 AM)
JT going deep down the field with Troy Smith and then the second play will be a hand off to Pittman off tackle.

woody68 (Aug 30, 2006 10:50:28 AM)
Gary, who are your two top Ohio prospects for 2008?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:50:28 AM)
I sort of listed a top five yesterday but it's going to be everchanging. I like guys with freakish potential at the top of my list and so I'm going to go with Brandon Beachum and Shawntel Rowell. I've gotten beat up already for my position on Rowell but when you look at a person that large that can move like he can and has a tremendous desire to be a great football player, you have to like what he gives you. People talked about how overweight Browning was for the longest time and failed to see how good of a good football player he was because they looked at him only through that prism. Beachum has freakish physical ability. He's coming off of a thigh injury so he has yet to be at his full potential this year but as he eases on into it...he should be able to dominate football games on offense and defense. Those are my top two guys right now. I really like Devoe Torrence after watching him play last Thursday. He's in my top five now. Take it for what it's worth.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:52:16 AM)
I see Oneal isnt starting game 1, think by the time the B10 season starts he would pass Mitchell?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:52:16 AM)
Ability-wise he's probably ahead of Mitchell but there is no room for any mental breakdowns for this young defense early in the year. Mitchell is a safe pick to start but O'Neal should gradually see more and more action as the season wears on. He's not in the doghouse or anything like that. Mitchell makes plays.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 10:54:44 AM)
whats your feeling on Barksdale? Not being an OSU homer here, but OSU is the best fit for him. Close to home, depth chart allows PT very quickly.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 10:54:44 AM)
Yeah but now he's got ND back in the picture and I don't know if he really knows what he wants. I would forget about Barksdale until the season is over and then find out what he's thinking then. OSU is a good final destination and it's likely to go down that way, but if you follow too closely in between you might go nuts. So forget about Barksdale for now.

ottobuck (Aug 30, 2006 11:02:10 AM)
Is there that much difference between the starters on D-fence and the one's who might be starting at the end of the season? Is it just mental , physical or both?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:02:10 AM)
Hi ottobuck... after the top four guys up front, I'm hearing the rotation off the bench might look something like this...Penton, Wilson, Denlinger, Barrow and Rose. And then Worthington if it gets that far. At LB it's Grant, Terry and Moeller but Homan could get in the mix obviously if he's able to go. In the secondary...Washington has to be on the field at some point opposite Jenkins. I don't know if Smith is just going to make a token start or not but I hear that Washington continues to impress. Anderson Russel continues to impress also. Isn't it great to have O'Neal and Russel as your backup safeties. I can't wait to see those two on the field together.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:03:14 AM)
since april we have been saying that smith is going to get passed at cb, yet here we are wk1 and hes still there. Whats the chance that he actually remains there all year?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:03:14 AM)
If he's still the start it's because he earned it thats for sure. I think in time Donald Washington will be the first to make a challenge for that position. At what point that happens I'm not real sure.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:03:48 AM)
Whats going on with Homan? Still fighting an injury?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:03:48 AM)
I believe he's healthy now but you never really know until he gets out there.

na (Aug 30, 2006 11:04:59 AM)
Looking ahead to Texas, do you see any aspects of the Longhorn team (receivers, o-line) that OSU could have a problem matching up with?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:04:59 AM)
Hi na... I think their O-line against OSU's D-Line could be one heck of a matchup to be honest with you. Mano-y-mano! You got to love it.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:08:30 AM)
Anything else on your minds...fire away at this time. Again sorry for the technical problems early but thanks for sticking around with me up to this point.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:09:41 AM)
Thursday night I'm going to see Buchtel at Fitch. I'm looking forward to seeing Johnny Adams for the Griffins. He's a junior but he's a good one. He's my number four junior right now behind Mike Adams and Devoe Torrence is number five.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:10:03 AM)
Friday night I'm going to see Brandon Saine and Piqua against Xenia. Looking forward to that.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:10:44 AM)
Saturday is Glenville and Harding but due to the late Ohio State start I won't be able to catch that game but maybe the very end.

ottobuck (Aug 30, 2006 11:11:29 AM)
Who scores first in game #1 the offense or defense or special teams?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:11:29 AM)
I sure hope it's the offense ottobuck...and on their very first possession.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:12:05 AM)
Sept. 1st is coming quick, should we expect some activity that day or is it going to take some time for the 08 monster OL class to develop

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:12:06 AM)
Be patients but the '08 class will be a monster class for sure. MONSTER! Wow!

na (Aug 30, 2006 11:14:59 AM)
Which of the linebackers do you predict will have the most impressive first game--I am anxious to see this new group on the field.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:14:59 AM)
Everybody has written John Kerr off for so long now (but me of course) so I would love to see him make a huge statement just to reward him for his patience and allegiance and to the program. One thing I've always said about John Kerr is that he's a football player...period! I'm really happy for him even if never starts another game for The Ohio State University after week one. He pursued his dream and on Saturday afternoon at 3:30 he'll reach his ultimate goal. To start for Ohio State in the Horseshoe. Good for him!

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:16:37 AM)
Is the new locker room finished and when will the whole project be complete?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:16:37 AM)
I'm not sure of the status of the WHAC but I had some friends who recently got a tour of the place and they said it's wonderful. JT's office in itself is a thing of beauty. I'm sure it's first-class all around. Do you expect anything less when JT has his hands in it?

ottobuck (Aug 30, 2006 11:16:55 AM)
Living Missouri, is there a buckeye web site to catch the radio broadcast?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:16:55 AM)
Don't know that answer sorry ottobuck.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:17:40 AM)
1660 the fan...

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:17:40 AM)
Do you mean 1460 the fan?

woody68 (Aug 30, 2006 11:20:43 AM)
Which 2008 prospects do you think will get offered friday ?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:20:44 AM)
Hi woody...I'm guessing a couple of the big name linemen like Adams and Brewster, for starters. Maybe Long and Shugarts as well. I know Oklahoma is going to offer Beachum on Sept. 1. I certainly would consider him. Beachum is going to enroll early somewhere in the winter of 2008 so why not get an early start on him. It gets more and more competitive every year.

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:20:56 AM)

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:20:56 AM)
Thanks buckgrad for the assist.

ottobuck (Aug 30, 2006 11:21:11 AM)
Thanks Guys! Great team effort!

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:21:11 AM)
You're welcome!

woody68 (Aug 30, 2006 11:24:28 AM)
how about Zerbie Sanders

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:24:28 AM)
Zerbie is out there too. There are so many great potential linemen prospects. Shawntel Rowell is out there too. I'm sure JT has his game plan established and ready to execute. We'll find out shortly who gets those early offers from the junior class.

ncbuckeye (Aug 30, 2006 11:25:00 AM)
Sorry I'm alittle late...Gary what play do you think Tressel opens the game offensively with?

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:25:00 AM)
Hi NCbuckeye...long pass down the field on first down. Then off-tackle to Pittman.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:25:24 AM)
With that I'm going to call it a wrap. Sorry for the inconvenience we all had to endure at the start but once we got rolling it moved along pretty well. I have a ton of stuff to do before I get to Austintown tomorrow night and then leave for Piqua on Friday. I hope to capture some good stuff with Saine on Friday.

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:27:02 AM)
Here's to great weather on Saturday and a solid victory for the Buckeyes to open the season. I like the good guys 41-14. Enjoy a nice high school football game on Friday and enjoy the Buckeyes on Saturday whether you're at home or at Ohio Stadium. Have a great weekend. Go Bucks!

buckgrad (Aug 30, 2006 11:27:25 AM)
thanks Gary, football is finally here!!

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:27:25 AM)
Ya got to love it! Smile!

MacAuley (Aug 30, 2006 11:28:26 AM)
Thanks Gary!

GaryHousteau (Aug 30, 2006 11:28:26 AM)
You bet!
