Helwagen Chat: Sept. 7 Archive

Here are excerpts from Thursday's Chat with Bucknuts.com managing editor Steve Helwagen. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts.com subscribers. Gary Housteau will have a Chat at 1 p.m. Friday, while Bob Lichtenfels of Scout.com will host one at 1 p.m. Monday.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:47:09 AM)
Gary H. will Chat at 1 p.m. tomorrow and Bob Lichtenfels is set for 1 p.m. Monday. Here we go ...

JimC (Sep 7, 2006 9:47:21 AM)
Coach T said Aaron P will handle all the place kicks and kickoffs

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:47:45 AM)
That only makes sense. Pettrey had 3 of 4 kicks go for TBs. Pretorius saw his 2 returned. No sense in that.

fairbornlawyer (Sep 7, 2006 9:47:52 AM)
I just heard the call-in show with JT on the radio. Man, it is going to be hard to wait until Saturday night.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:48:13 AM)
I agree. We are 55 hours out. I am 22 hours until I board the plane.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 9:48:18 AM)
Any word on Roy Hall?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:48:56 AM)
A poster on the board who may have some contacts says he is on the traveling squad. They are taking 70 on the trip to Austin. I assume the 12 or so scholarship guys who don't go will be RS.

JimC (Sep 7, 2006 9:48:59 AM)
Hi Steve, What are you predictions for Sat and who shines?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:49:35 AM)
I have said and continue to say Ohio State 27-20. Of course, I think I picked OSU 38-24 last year. one sec ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:51:17 AM)
I think Troy Smith runs for 50 and 1 score and throws for 200 and 2 scores. He will be the best player on the field. Ted Ginn ain't no slouch either.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 9:51:22 AM)
Any injuries to update?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:51:35 AM)
Nope, everybody who figures to play is all systems go, from what we know.

mckbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 9:51:40 AM)
Steve-Terry Bowden just picked the Bucks on ESPN radio 24-21. Do you think we will be able to limit TX to 3 scores?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:52:02 AM)
Yes, I said 20 points, which is about the same. I just think the defense gets after McCoy and forces a couple of TOs.

thegreatcornholio (Sep 7, 2006 9:52:10 AM)
Hi Steve, will Troy take another step toward legend on Saturday?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:01 AM)
That's my thought. This is the kind of game that could brand somebody as the Heisman front runner, over and out. He is ready to have that kind of game. Texas' front is good, the LBs are OK and I really like Ross at corner (he's like Chris Gamble, only he can really lower the boom).

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:04 AM)
Have you heard anything about the tone of practice this week? What is the attitude like?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:37 AM)
Businesslike, is what it sounds like. Very focused, attention to detail, not worrying about the hype.

ottobuck (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:40 AM)
What kinda turf is in Texas stadium? Is it a fast track or real grass?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:44 AM)
It is grass.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 9:53:48 AM)
Does Ginn get doubled the entire game?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:11 AM)
No, when they go 3- and 4-wide receiver sets, Texas will have to make some tough choices.

Poz79 (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:16 AM)
Hi Steve, you are going to Austin correct? Ever been to Memorial Stadium before, if so how does it compare?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:31 AM)
Yes, I am going. No, I have never been to Austin. I do look forward to it.

thegreatcornholio (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:47 AM)
it may be my caffiene buzz, but I do not feel that a RS fr qb is going to win it. We may have green bullets, but they will still be flying around.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:55:45 AM)
I agree. At some point, that youth will be exposed. Make no mistake, this guy is a winner. He had something like 118 TDs in high school (second most in Texas prep history, and that says a lot) and his teams only lost 2-3 games. So he is not used to losing. He is all dressed up and ready for the big dance. Let's see what he's got.

Poz79 (Sep 7, 2006 9:55:54 AM)
How do you think the ground game will go?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:57:23 AM)
Ohio State was OK on the ground against Texas last year. The front 4 for Texas is really tough. They will win some match-ups and the OSU OL will win some as well. Don't be shocked if they register a couple of sacks or create a TO in the OSU backfield. They're pretty good.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:58:42 AM)
If OSU approaches 125 or 150 yards on the ground, the Buckeyes should win it easily. ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:59:22 AM)
Last year OSU had 36 carries for 111 yards. Another key will be red zone. OSU must score touchdowns and not settle for 6 field goal tries this time around.

fairbornlawyer (Sep 7, 2006 9:59:26 AM)
Steve, are you amazed at how many people favor OSU? The Bucks have won with defense and excellent special teams the past few years. Tons of inexperience at those key areas against a team as talented and experienced as there is in the country (other than QB). They have great lines, great speed, they block kicks better than anyone else and they are at home.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:00:15 AM)
Troy Smith is the reason. He has played three incredible games in a row, in my book. Texas is great, yes. And they are playing at home. Every match-up on the field is even except QB. Troy gives OSU the edge.

nastybuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:00:27 AM)
I am really liking the athletic qbs the buckeyes seem to be going after... do you think Henton really has a chance to take over next year? and do you think the Buckeyes will continue to recruit that sort of QB?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:01:10 AM)
I think Henton has a slight chance to take over next year. My money is on Boeckman today with Schoenhoft pushing or even platooning with him early on. Yes, OSU will continue to go after athletic QBs.

whio (Sep 7, 2006 10:01:24 AM)
Hi Steve, I hate to be a pessimist, but our back seven looked pretty bad out there at times last week. A little lost, slow, poor tackling & getting off blocks. Our youth really showed. How much improvement can we expect in week two and what, if any personnel changes do you expect by the end of the game? I think our O and DL are going to need monster games for us to pull it out.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:02:18 AM)
Yep, you make some good points. The back 7 did not tackle well. I thought Freeman, Homan, Mitchell all played well. The rest have some serious work to do. Agreed, the OL and DL must play the best game of their collective careers because their counterparts from Texas are every bit as good as they are.

ottobuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:02:22 AM)
Who's your defensive player of the game?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:02:58 AM)
Gholston, Freeman and Jenkins. Those 3, right now, are impact players. Pitcock, actually, may be the best but what he does sets everybody else up most of the time.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:03:08 AM)
I am worried about this game because our Defense looked so poor, but let's remember that Troy Smith and Jim Tressel ALWAYS play well in the biggest of games. If T. Smith played in the entire game last year we beat Texas.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:03:46 AM)
Probably true. It was a matter of "flow." Troy missed much of the preseason and was not at midseason form, like he showed last week. They need Ginn to also step up and build off his best September game yet last week.

Buckeyesforlife (Sep 7, 2006 10:03:55 AM)
What kind of rotation should we expect are deffence to have?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:06:04 AM)
Just guessing, I imagine Wilson/Gholston and Richardson/Barrow will rotate at end. Tackle spots will be Pitcock and Patterson primarily with Penton in there some and Denlinger in just a little. I imagine Homan and Kerr split time. Laurinaitis and Freeman will play most of the way, but Grant will also get a few plays at MLB. In the secondary, Jenkins will play nearly every important play. Washington and Smith will rotate at the other corner. Mitchell will play a lot with Patterson, O'Neal and Russell also rotating in. If I didn't mention their name, I wouldn't look for them very much.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:06:10 AM)
Do we rotate our DBs as much as last week?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:06:41 AM)
Yes, because they'll be running all day and will get tired. Key will be to keep either Mitchell or Jenkins on the field at all times. They know what they're doing and made plays in the opener.

mdbucknut (Sep 7, 2006 10:06:48 AM)
hey man first time in,i thought the D looked great sat.,considering all the youth and inexperience back there.does J Oneal start or get any reps?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:07:47 AM)
O'Neal will not start. He is backing up Mitchell now. Mitchell is playing some of the best football of his life now. The light has gone on. Can I sit here and say he's not going to give up any big plays? No, because they probably will. But I think the coaches just trust him to be in the right spot more than O'Neal right now.

Byars (Sep 7, 2006 10:07:50 AM)
Man you got the job to kill for

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:08:15 AM)
Boy, this week I sure do. I have to pinch myself I'm going to be down there. This is almost as big as the Fiesta Bowl NC game.

hamiltuckbuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:08:24 AM)
Who attempts the first field goal Saturday?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:09:46 AM)
My guess is Pettrey. I don't know why Pretorius tried the first one, a 51-yarder, last week. Pettrey has the strongest leg. Pretorius has usually been more consistent inside 45. Let's see what happens. You have to hope this game does not come down to a 40-yard FG.

ottobuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:09:50 AM)
Is Lawrence Wilson sliding down the depth chart?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:10:52 AM)
No, I don't see it that way. Coach Heacock moved him from a starter to a reserve in camp because Wilson missed the first week or 2. But he is back playing and I believe he had a sack in the opener. Those four ends are roughly 50-50 players. Maybe Gholston and Richardson play slightly more than that. He is definitely high in their plans.

ToledoBucknutty (Sep 7, 2006 10:11:02 AM)
Wow....Mr. Babb does not appear to like our chances too well this year, and he makes a lot of valid points. Do you think there is any way we win this one without winning the turnover battle? Do you expect the defense to be much better this weekend than last? I know they subbed a lot, but....

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:12:24 AM)
Turnovers have not been an OSU forte the last few years, at least defensively. The takeaways just have not been there. They need to force 2 turnovers, maybe 3 as a recipe to win this game in a hostile environment.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:12:32 AM)
That's what happened at NC State in 04.

mdbucknut (Sep 7, 2006 10:12:42 AM)
since i love defense so much,i say BLITZ,BLITZ,BLITZ,and keep blitzing the young man get in his head and confuse him ALOT...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:15:31 AM)
I agree, I think OSU kept the pressure on Horvath last week to a minimum. They will come from every angle this way. They will come up with ways to blitz McCoy that still have not been invented (ha ha). This is the key to the win, IMHO. Maybe they turn Curtis Terry loose. He hardly played against NIU and has a rep as a great blizter. Bad thing is the Texas OL and RBs excel at blitz pickup. They are veteran and good. So we'll see how effective it is.

mckbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:15:36 AM)
Steve-I know our D line is very good, but TX has a huge OL, can we expect to hold our own in the heat of TX?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:16:12 AM)
Yeah, Pitcock is a stud, as is Patterson. They need Gholston and Richardson, in particular, to play up and make an impact. If McCoy has time, Texas could score 28 points, and you don't want that.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:16:19 AM)
I see us spreading the field all day. That allows us to spead their DBs out, keep those great LBs off the field, and it allows us to run the ball with T. Smith. Your thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:17:57 AM)
With Texas missing Tarell Brown, I think that makes a ton of sense. Put the game in the hands of backups at DB to make plays. Smith had 1 carry against NIU, so like the Terry blitzes, maybe this is a ploy they want to explore. Smith has been sure-handed with the ball. When OSU is backed up, look for him to keep it to set up the punt and play field position, rather than risk a fumble or INT.

skeelo (Sep 7, 2006 10:18:06 AM)
steve it was very apparent that osu purposely dialed down their defensive scheme last saturday. our defense is much much better than they showed. do you feel likewise?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:19:11 AM)
Yes, they stayed with 4-man pressure and only brought blitzes sporadically. I don't go back over every play but that was my recollection. When they're up 28-0, they didn't need bells and whistles. Now, NIU did expose 2-3 of the blitzes by hitting Wolfe in space. Texas does not throw similar screens typically, but may add them this week after seeing that.

Byars (Sep 7, 2006 10:19:19 AM)
Is McCoy the type of QB that requires a LB spy?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:19:37 AM)
No, he did step up and have 2-3 nice runs vs. North Texas. I don't think that's necessary though.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:19:53 AM)
What will OSU do to improve our tackling before Texas? Are you hearing anything from the coaches? I couldn't believe it when I saw their little RB running through three of our defensive players (including Freeman and Jenkins).

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:20:57 AM)
All they can do is work on tackling like always. They are what they are. There is no special formula or anything. You just go back to work and address it. I think the defense is getting a bad rap. Jeez, the starters turned NIU out with one first down in their first 3-4 series and it was 28-0.

mdbucknut (Sep 7, 2006 10:21:11 AM)
i say not to worry,my beloved BUCKEYES by 12...31-17

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:21:21 AM)
That's 14, I think (ha ha).

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:21:26 AM)
Doesn't it seem like Wolfe might not be getting the credit he deserves? Do you think any other player on the Bucks schedule will match his offensive numbers this season? I doubt it. He has torched everybody I've seen him play the last year and a half.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:21:43 AM)
Yes, he's very good. Hart will approach it and so likely will Sutton and Ringer.

whio (Sep 7, 2006 10:21:50 AM)
Is Homan still bothered by the hammy?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:22:00 AM)
No, I don't think so.

Buckeyesforlife (Sep 7, 2006 10:22:03 AM)
Do you think the heat will take any effect on our players?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:22:42 AM)
Yes, they need to take the proper precautions. I imagine they'll have the cool spray on the sideline and hydrate and rotate players, everything they can do. It will take a full 70-man effort to pull this out.

PABuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:22:45 AM)
How confident will you be if Pettrey is kicking a 40 yarder to win the game?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:23:32 AM)
He has not kicked in a live game since 2003, I think. So you just have to hope it does not come down to that. They need to win this one outright, I am afraid.

ottobuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:23:42 AM)
If you want another look at Texas, last years game is on espn classic 1:00 pm central time. The last couuple minutes arn't fun but I know the players have seen them.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:24:38 AM)
yep, I've reeled that back a couple of times. My take was if any one of 8 plays went their way, OSU wins and it's no doubt. Hamby, Hoobler penalty on kick, incompletion to Roy Hall, Pittman catching tipped ball, and on and on.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:25:16 AM)
Also the kick return out of the end zone. Antonio Smith had two hands on taylor and spun him around. But he could not get him down, did not wrap him up and did not get any help.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:25:26 AM)
That safety changes the game as well.

Poz79 (Sep 7, 2006 10:25:55 AM)
How many carries for Chris Wells?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:27:00 AM)
Probably 10, more than you'd think. Hopefully they learned their lesson at Michigan -- none behind the 50. But somebody will need to take some heat off Pittman on sustained drives. Would be great if he has a breakout game of like 75-80 yards, 1-2 TDs and no fumbles. He could be a secret weapon here.

mckbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:27:04 AM)
If it comes down to a 40+ FG or 5-7 yrds for 1st down, do we most often kick or go for it?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:27:41 AM)
Depends on time and score. My feeling is early they will kick and try for points. Later if they're down 4 or more, they'll have to go.

whio (Sep 7, 2006 10:27:53 AM)
Do you think the first place voting gaff will be a distraction to the team or staff, or will the media make it one? I don't trust em not to do a pre game or half time hatchet job. I've already heard some SI guy on Dan Patrick saying, essentially, Jim Tressle lied.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:28:57 AM)
It was all a big misunderstanding. The Dispatch had an explanation from a sports information guy today. The poll was held to Tuesday because of FSU-Miami and that's a work day for the coaches. So they just sent it in with OSU No. 1 and didn't think anything of it. It will not be a distraction for the players. They could care less.

BuckeyesBy10 (Sep 7, 2006 10:29:16 AM)
In yesterday's chat, Ross Lucksinger sang the praises of just about every player on the Texas 2-deep. Made them all sound like All Americans. Then he turns around and predicts an Ohio State win.. How do you figure that?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:29:27 AM)
He knows how good Troy Smith and the Buckeyes truly are.

Poz79 (Sep 7, 2006 10:29:31 AM)
Which one will be tougher, @ Texas or @ Iowa?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:30:12 AM)
Oh, man, I pick a loss at Iowa and a win here, unless Iowa unravels between now and 9/30. So I'll say Iowa. But if OSU wins this game, their confidence would be at an all-time high.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:30:39 AM)
Don't you think NIU would beat North Texas by four touchdowns?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:30:48 AM)
yes, probably like 38-10

ohioguy25 (Sep 7, 2006 10:30:54 AM)
do you think we throw out the run game and run lotta 4-5 five wide sets kinda like the bowl game last year

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:31:24 AM)
If Pittman is struggling between the tackles and they don't want to risk a fumble with Beans, that's about the only alternative.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:31:42 AM)
Didn't it seem like JT was cautious not to blow out NIU? There are a number of coaches who would have hung 50 on the Huskies with the talent the Buckeyes have.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:32:26 AM)
Cautious not to blow them out? You think he likes talking about fumbles on the 2-yard line. What is a 52-12 final? I call that a blowout. NIU didn't come to play until they were down 21-0 and OSU was subbing 3-4 guys a side at once.

md buck (Sep 7, 2006 10:32:56 AM)
Just joined and Im sure this was addressed. But as Babbs article yesterday. Even will all the substutions you dont give up 300 yds to one man. Im worried, your thougths

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:33:47 AM)
He was their only offensive weapon and he probably played the game of his life. They're backed up on their own 2 and he's running between the tackles, for goodness sake. There aren't 2-3 better backs in all of college football. Peterson and who else?

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:33:58 AM)
What happened to Robert Rose on Saturday and will he play this week, he seemed so dominant in all the all-star games.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:34:57 AM)
Fickell said Rose is in their plans. I imagine he travels to this game and may see some action. I never saw a participation report. Everybody says he did not play, so I'll go with that. If he doesn't travel, then we know they'd like to RS him. I think he can make an impact in this game as a play eater, if nothing else.

whio (Sep 7, 2006 10:35:05 AM)
BTW Steve, do you ever start to feel like Nostradamus or some kind of fortune teller with all us anxious fans asking you to predict the future of our beloved Buckeyes?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:35:24 AM)
Yeah, I just try to make informed guesses most of the time. I study it as closely as I can, though.

ohioguy25 (Sep 7, 2006 10:35:32 AM)
after watching the limas sweed td over and over do you think he had control of the ball and do you think this years rules and replay whould of helped us last year

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:36:20 AM)
I was standing near the play and when it happened I thought, "That is a touchdown." You had a Big 12 crew ruling TD and a Big Ten replay guy who could have overturned it, but he did not. It was a judgment call all the way. ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:37:20 AM)
Sweed landed on his back about 5 inches inside the sideline of the end zone. The ball was on his stomach and he had two hands touching it. Whether you want to say he had full control or not, I don't know. He landed and bounced out of bounds. Salley landed on him and knocked it out once they were out of bounds. ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:40:11 AM)
You want to say he was juggling it at the instant his back hit the end zone, but the replay official found no conclusive evidence of that to overturn it. You watch it from every angle and it looks like it is rolling around on his belly, but it is not a wild thing. If the ball had been outside of his body, maybe they overturn it. But that was not the case. They called it a TD and it was ... I guess.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:40:54 AM)
The rules this year on replay are no different in terms of looking at the play. The only difference is the coach can make a challenge. But the replay official can still initiate, and that was the case last year.

frostbuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:41:13 AM)
Hi Steve, just finished my round you of all the insiders understand this, but for my question, there are many concerns about the defense but not from me. I think the problem (if you want to call it that ) is that there are many very young talented players with only so much playing time to go around which makes the D look somewhat eratic. whats your take on this?. And does the talent of C Wells puts the offense over the top.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:42:45 AM)
I agree, I think the upside of the young guys outweighs the downside of their inexperience. A.J. Hawk was not born on third base, either. People need to remember that he and Carpenter and Schlegel knew what the offense was going to do before they did it because they'd all played 40 games. Remember NW in 2004? Hawk and Carpenter looked loss against the Basanez scramble. They converted like 7-8 third-and-longs. Give them time to learn and grow.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:43:05 AM)
Do you see us stopping Texas running game enough to put the pressure on there young qb?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:44:29 AM)
Texas will lean on Young and Charles and even the 260-pound Melton to try and wear the Buckeyes down. That is for sure. If McCoy has to attempt 25 passes, that is not good for UT. I think the front 7 will stand up and be counted. between Kerr and Homan, somebody has to step up. They got like 4 tackles out of that spot this past week and that's not enough (although I think Kerr came off in the nickel).

mdbucknut (Sep 7, 2006 10:44:38 AM)
O HI O has the best ,most explosive offense in the country....imho...TGII needs to touch the ball more.any way he can..beanie also,i loved that kid.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:45:05 AM)
I agree. You want Beans' experience to be a positive one. Don't put him in position to fail; put him where he can run over dudes.

mdbucknut (Sep 7, 2006 10:45:14 AM)
nothing against mr.pittman, but from what i saw last week,he was drug down from behind a coouple of times.didnt look like good hard running to me.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:47:10 AM)
I thought Pitt was close to breaking the big one once or twice. I think he gets better as the game goes on. He had 17 carries for 75 yards and Smith had 13 for27 last year against Texas. They need Pitt to be 22-105, Beans 10-50 (again) and Smith 10-50. If they can anywhere approach those marks, they should be in great, great shape. That's a total near 200, when they only had 111 last year and the UT defense is about the same ... and it's down there. But OSU did not have Beans last year.

Pastor Jack (Sep 7, 2006 10:47:39 AM)
I disagree, the Texas game will be a lot tougher. It is earlier in the year, before the Defense has a time to gel, and Texas is a better team than Iowa.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:48:29 AM)
The Iowa game is a trap. What happens in this game will, in some ways, dictate the tenor of that game (i.e. a win gives OSU confidence or a big head and creates more furor at Iowa, a loss here makes that game a bigger priority for OSU).

md buck (Sep 7, 2006 10:48:38 AM)
Say beanie getsa few great carries and has a great day PIttamn gets stuffed on his first couple of possesion would JT put beanie in for more carries than pitt

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:48:45 AM)
No, Pittman is the bell cow.

nastybuck (Sep 7, 2006 10:48:51 AM)
Iowa lost some good linebackers... has their defense replaced those two fully? They just dont seem to have the overall team to beat us... Although i dont like the night game..

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:49:16 AM)
It's a Big Ten game at night in an extremely hostile environment. Iowa is hostile when the game starts at 11 a.m., let alone 7 p.m.

thegreatcornholio (Sep 7, 2006 10:49:50 AM)
Hey Steve, if you see Matthew McConaughey on the sideline, give him a whack upside the head for me.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:50:35 AM)
Hey, I like Matthew. Great actor. Funny as hell. He was at the NC game in 03. Big Horns fan. That set-up with he and Adam Dunn ... er Will Ferrell before the Rose Bowl was priceless.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:50:54 AM)
Do you know if there will be big ten officials doing the game in Texas?????

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:51:02 AM)
As far as I know, that is the plan.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:51:20 AM)
That worked well when Honig et al. went down to NC State and called like 13 penalties on the Pack.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:51:30 AM)
Do you see Mr. Nichol blooming on Saturday night? He seemed to be getting stronger as the game went on last Saturday.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:51:58 AM)
Well the TE has been underutilized at OSU for several years. About time to write him back into the offense, if you ask me. He had a drop last week, though.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:52:08 AM)
The Bucks have shown a penchant for fumbling inside the ten in recent years. Michigan, ND, twice last week, et al. They aren't really that fancy with their offense in those situations. What do you think is going on with this tendency?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:53:00 AM)
Ball security on Wells. He bounced into his own blocker, who was shoved back. On the other, Zwick was stepped on and did not secure the ball. I don't think it's any great common thread other than take care of the ball. Neither fumble was "forced" by some big NIU hit.

ohioguy25 (Sep 7, 2006 10:53:09 AM)
we all know they didnt show all there cards last weekend what could we see alot of new wrinkles they say they have put into the offense this season and what might they be

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:14 AM)
Maybe a trick play, reverse to Small or Ginn. More Beanie Wells. If they protect Troy Smith, he and Ginn and Gonzo should be able to do some business. Maybe this is a game where Robiskie comes to the forefront against single coverage.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:29 AM)
It seems to me that Ross Homan is the next great lb at osu, you see him running sideline to sideline he reminds me off the big cat....do you think he takes over and starts here soon??????????

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:40 AM)
It looks that way if Kerr has many more games like that.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:44 AM)
If the Buckeyes give up 28 points to Texas, do you still expect them to win?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:55:34 AM)
Doubt it. That's a lot. Now the Texas defense did surrender a few points last year (like 38 to USC, but that was one of the best offensive teams we've ever seen).

ohioguy25 (Sep 7, 2006 10:56:53 AM)
I know Griffin is outstanding how is compared to Huff and can Aaron Ross keep ted ginn at bay

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:57:58 AM)
Ross is a big strong corner. He can flat out play. Ginn said he figured even if Brown was around that Ross would take him. The Griffin bros. at safety are tough as nails as well.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:58:03 AM)
I know that this is Texas Week, but have you heard any new recruiting news? Who are the next couple of buckeye commits

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:59:02 AM)
They just got Devon Torrence. He may be the halfway point as No. 8 in a class that may end up around 17 or so. News this week was the offers to various juniors like Adams, Brewster, Shugarts, Hale, McCarthy and several others. We have stories coming on all of them. That's been about it.

Byars (Sep 7, 2006 10:59:10 AM)
How many yards did Pitt have against NIU?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:59:25 AM)
Pitt had 111 on 19 carries with a touch.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:59:28 AM)
Will Texas kick to Ginn?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:03 AM)
Yeah, I think so. The way OSU has it set up, he can go to anywhere on the field to field it. O'Neal proved kicking to the upback is no day at the beach, either.

mighty7 (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:08 AM)
Steve, do they post the traveling squad for this game.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:22 AM)
We may get a list when we get there. They may change it through tonight.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:45 AM)
Are you guys planning another bucknuts party this year maybe for Penn State game ???

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:01:38 AM)
No plans at this time. The guy who planned the party last year for us actually works for Scout and he has relocated to the home office in Seattle. I haven't had time to organize it. Mr. B deserves all the props for that one as well for footing the bill.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 11:01:56 AM)
Nobody really talked about Grant before this first game, and I think he had a very solid game. I think we see more of him and less of Kerr and/or Laurinitis.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:02:24 AM)
Could be. I liked what I saw of Grant as well. He is a gamer.

Zonabuck (Sep 7, 2006 11:02:27 AM)
Hey Steve -- what does Texas do with that ridiculous Godzillatron during extra points and field goals at that end of the field? Supposedly it is brighter than the stadium lights.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:02:42 AM)
No idea. This is only the second game and the first was in broad daylight.

mckbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 11:02:50 AM)
Steve-Is Barksdale going to the game and does a win by OSU clinch him with us?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:04:50 AM)
The update on Barksdale from 8/29 said he would be at ND for the PSU game and he goes back there next week for an official for the Michigan game. I doubt the result of a single game decides. Ross Lucksinger said Texas will move on without him if he doesn't verbal soon.

Zonabuck (Sep 7, 2006 11:04:56 AM)
Will Barksdale be at the game Saturday? How about any others that the Bucks have a shot with?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:05:24 AM)
Maybe JB Shugarts, the junior from Houston Klein (Youboty's school) who OSU just offered. Houston is 2 hours away, though.

edbuck51 (Sep 7, 2006 11:05:34 AM)
When Small had the ball on Saturday, there certainly seemed to be a little spark there. When I heard the remarks about his skills vs. TGII, I was a little skeptical, but it sure looks like he could be the next big gamebreaker in Columbus.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:06:07 AM)
Yes, people who judged off the all-star game were mistaken. Kid can play. He would not be in the top six if he couldn't. Maybe he gets to spark them. He and Chris wells could be wild cards here.

md buck (Sep 7, 2006 11:06:19 AM)
which is harder to replace 9 defenive starters or Vince Young. Or put it this way what you would rather have rookie Qb or 9 new starters on defence . 45 states think osu will beat Texas according to espn news (just heard)

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:07:09 AM)
That is a tough question. A guy like Vince Young or Troy Smith only comes around once every 15 or 20 years. So I'll say the QB. These programs recruit so well. They have the talent. The hard work is in coaching them up.

lharbers (Sep 7, 2006 11:07:17 AM)
I think the biggest factor could be the field goal kicking game. If we get bogged down inside the 20 like we did last year it will be bad news. Last week didn't provide a lot of confidence in the kicking game. This could be the difference in a Loss / Win.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:07:42 AM)
Agreed. You don't want it to come down to that. Leave no doubt and win going away (if you can ... ha ha).

That only makes sense. Pettrey had 3 of 4 kicks go for TBs. Pretorius saw his 2 returned. No sense in that.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:49:35 AM)

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:51:17 AM)
I think Troy Smith runs for 50 and 1 score and throws for 200 and 2 scores. He will be the best player on the field. Ted Ginn ain't no slouch either.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:11 AM)

Poz79 (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:16 AM)
Hi Steve, you are going to Austin correct? Ever been to Memorial Stadium before, if so how does it compare?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:31 AM)

thegreatcornholio (Sep 7, 2006 9:54:47 AM)
it may be my caffiene buzz, but I do not feel that a RS fr qb is going to win it.

It was a matter of \"flow.\" Troy missed much of the preseason and was not at midseason form, like he showed last week.

I was standing near the play and when it happened I thought, \"That is a touchdown.\" You had a Big 12 crew ruling TD and a Big Ten replay guy who could have overturned it, but he did not.

Hey Steve, if you see Matthew McConaughey on the sideline, give him a whack upside the head for me.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:50:54 AM)

Neither fumble was \"forced\" by some big NIU hit.

ohioguy25 (Sep 7, 2006 10:53:09 AM)
we all know they didnt show all there cards last weekend what could we see alot of new wrinkles they say they have put into the offense this season and what might they be

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:14 AM)
Maybe a trick play, reverse to Small or Ginn. More Beanie Wells. If they protect Troy Smith, he and Ginn and Gonzo should be able to do some business. Maybe this is a game where Robiskie comes to the forefront against single coverage.

jsbuckeye (Sep 7, 2006 10:54:29 AM)

Pitt had 111 on 19 carries with a touch.

chuangtsu (Sep 7, 2006 10:59:28 AM)
Will Texas kick to Ginn?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:03 AM)
Yeah, I think so. The way OSU has it set up, he can go to anywhere on the field to field it. O'Neal proved kicking to the upback is no day at the beach, either.

mighty7 (Sep 7, 2006 11:00:08 AM)

Leave no doubt and win going away (if you can ... ha ha).
