Hey rud, good to see you

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:33:53 PM)
Hey! Jerry made it!

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:33:55 PM)
I am not real good on these machines. Sorry

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:02 PM)
no prob

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:06 PM)
We all thought you might be having some computer problems!

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:07 PM)
what's happening

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:20 PM)
heard turbo on spiels show today

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:29 PM)
said he's max lb in nickel package

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:30 PM)
gotta feel good about the Zwick comments I'm hearing

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:35 PM)
What is with the Morris rumor today?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:42 PM)
What rumor?

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:34:53 PM)
There was a rumor he had qualified

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:35:01 PM)
good rumor

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:35:16 PM)
Supposedly was being reported on the radio

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:35:42 PM)
Talked to Joe Montgomery yesterday on the Spielman show. ..I had no idea that these guys don't know. You would think it is black or white...but there is some gray with clearinghouse

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:35:26 PM)
What comments are you hearing about Zwick???

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:36:21 PM)
Zwick is looking good from what I hear. I must be honest...I won't be out there until the pads are on. Now that I am married...I need to watch my time

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:36:56 PM)
Do the good things we're hearing now mean ANYTHING?

Mike68 (Aug 1, 2002 5:35:39 PM)
Any word on physical condition Morris is in?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:37:12 PM)
You can count on Morris being out of shape. 98% of frosh linemen are out of shape...and I from what I have heard...Morris falls in the majority

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:37:30 PM)
Datish looked like he had a good sized gut

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:38:25 PM)
Datish definitely is looking big, but you won't find many tight linemen. They just need the big, long arms. I can't emphasize the range factor enough

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:37:35 PM)
I would definitely feel great about the Morris rumors. I bet he gets through.

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:37:47 PM)
That would be great

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:38:11 PM)
Is Morris REALLY 360 lbs?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:38:45 PM)
No, he's not 360, I bet more like 340.

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:38:26 PM)
OL, we really need help, and there doesn't seem to be much on the recruiting horizon, Morris really would be a big blow!

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:39:02 PM)
Has Morris been lurking about?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:39:10 PM)
We need Morris...if nothing else to scare teams coming out of the lockerroom.

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:39:18 PM)
Or has he been staying away completely.

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:40:02 PM)
Morris has been around this summer. I wish he could have worked out all summer with our guys, but he's been around a bit

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:40:23 PM)
How does Underwood look? I was reading that he was 165-170 lbs

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:41:20 PM)
Underwood seemed big enough in the all-star games

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:40:27 PM)
Hey DiR

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:40:39 PM)
afternoon, better late than never

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:40:44 PM)
I am scared if we don't get him. It won't be like Dupree or Montgomery. If Morris doesn't get cleared...I predict he never wears the scarlet and gray

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:41:03 PM)
why is that rudz? I hear a few people say that.

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:41:06 PM)
That is probably true Rud

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:41:46 PM)
If Morris doesn't qualify, he goes through the recruiting process all over again

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:42:15 PM)
the only way I wouldn't see him here is if OSU didn't recruit him again

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:42:25 PM)
that would surprise me

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:42:28 PM)
I can't explain why. It is tough to pay for your school and not get reps. he would maybe go to a prep school and get stolen, or just loose his stinger to play the game at a high level. you have to keep those guys interested. Stay on them at all times or they are gone

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:42:48 PM)
OSU would still recruit him

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:42:51 PM)
ala Chuck Jones?

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:43:14 PM)
where does everyone project OSU to come out in the poll tonight?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:43:22 PM)

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:43:35 PM)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:43:54 PM)
Good call on 13...I'd say 12 or 13. Most likely 13

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:44:27 PM)
think they will be the first or second ranked B10 team? I am guessing the 2nd in the poll.

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:44:46 PM)

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:44:54 PM)
hey lads

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:44:55 PM)
We need to make sure Tressel really monitors the hitting this August.

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:49 PM)
While he needs to make sure we don't hit too much...we also need to make sure we hit enough. the more physical teams always win. It is a science and I hope he has it figured out. I am guessing he does.

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:08 PM)

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:11 PM)
if we lose an OL we're done!

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:29 PM)
Hey Ross!

eobuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:48 PM)
Jerry, which freshmen do you think will still standout when the upperclassman show up ?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:47:29 PM)
Other than Clarett, I could see Underwood and the young safeties looking good. Hall will be nice, but it will be camoflauged by the other older guys. I need to watch Coleman. I am intrigued by him. It sounds like he's not as big as many thought. But I think we need minutes from him

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:45:54 PM)
I was looking at OL recruiting in Ohio over the next couple of years, and there don't seem to be that many good ones out there

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:46:17 PM)
we need to go national for OLs

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:46:20 PM)
Jerry, any idea what a 'max' linebacker is in nickel coverage? Is that another term for strongside backer or the side with max pass protection?

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:46:30 PM)
on the OL, I know they were supposed to be concetrating on lower body strength. Does it look like it helped?

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:46:34 PM)
Means we need to go national, and we know how hard that is

eobuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:46:53 PM)
Jerry, do you the Craig Krenzel is ready to take control of the team ?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:48:19 PM)
I without a doubt think Krenzel is ready. I predict him as a captain. And that is putting myself on a limb, but I believe it. (with a solid camp)

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:48:15 PM)
did I miss Jerry's response about max linebacker?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:48:22 PM)

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:48:26 PM)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:49:34 PM)
The max is just the middle linebacker in the nickel. He'd have the #3 threat out of the offense

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:48:31 PM)
from what I hear, Krenzel is well in control of the team right now

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:49:08 PM)
Wasn't McMullen chosen 1st for spring game?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:49:45 PM)
or was it that the other team cheered when CK was chosen?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:10 PM)
I thought they split up the quarterbacks from the get go. I can't remember. I thought they were basically assigned

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:49:59 PM)
I think your second answer was correct

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:05 PM)
Thanks for the answer on max backer - I was wondering too

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:18 PM)
Jerry, 3 linebackers in a nickel defense?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:51:12 PM)
2 true linebackers...the nickel back is just playing a linebacker position

eobuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:35 PM)
Jerry, give me your prediction of the punishment for Brandon Joe

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:46 PM)
I heard Coleman looked good, Jerry

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:50:55 PM)
over at the ozone, there was a comment that Stafford has his weight up (which he needed) and that he could now possibly help out in the 2 deep. Your thought jerry?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:51:58 PM)
Stafford could absolutely be in the 2 deep. I think Tressel and Bollman already had him there. I could almost guarantee that.

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:51:48 PM)
Might we have Cie play Nickel then?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:52:46 PM)
I'm surprised to hear that Kudla might redshirt. Why is that?

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:52:59 PM)
needs to learn the position I think RIP

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:01 PM)
where'd you hear about kudla RIP

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:02 PM)
No, I think Cie will be in there on our nickel package, but Will Allen will substitute in for Wilhelm. So it will basically be a dime (if you consider Grant a db)

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:14 PM)
good point

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:27 PM)
he has the bull rush down, but needs technique work I think

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:54:10 PM)
I too am surprised with Kudla. You can't play stiff, and I think he is playing too stiff. He has the shiftiness in him, it just takes time to get the confidence to use it.

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:31 PM)
I can't remember. I do remember them saying that they were working with Kudla in playing a sort of 'flex' position for them

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:53 PM)
will we run our nickel(dime) vs Spread formation regardless of down-distance?

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:53:57 PM)
I want to see that new fullback with pads on!

eobuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:54:14 PM)
who do you think will be the starting o-line?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:55:48 PM)
how do you think they're going to utilize Cie in nickel and dime? Do you think they keep him out there due to his cover abilities?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:55:52 PM)
Will Allen was probably the ONLY person who was sorry to hear about Cie's move.

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:56:06 PM)
I see where CFN predicts 11-2 this year, with back to back losses to PU and Illini

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:56:33 PM)
Illini maybe, but Purdue???

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:56:35 PM)
if OSU starts 10-0 and then drops 2 in a row, Columbus might have to be put on suicide alert

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:56:49 PM)
PU will have D but no O

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:56:58 PM)
Wiscy will have O but no D

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:03 PM)
Thats funny Big Bucks. Cie will cover down on the number 2 receiver. T

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:16 PM)
yeah, purdue. I smacked them 94-0 on NCAA 2K3. The most I scored on anyone else was 45.

Kirk (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:21 PM)
I think Kyle Orton will give the Purdue passing game a boost, but the run was such a problem last year. That O-line should be better though

DiR (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:26 PM)
no defense at least in the video game

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:29 PM)
They won't do anything special for him...he will just be more mobile and better at covering than past linebackers in nickel

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:58:01 PM)
I think Purdue's running game will be better. You know how I like Harris

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:57:55 PM)
what exactly are they doing with Kudla? New defensive wrinkle or just letting him play flex more?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:58:41 PM)
They are just goofing around. They won't create a new defense for Kudla. It is too time consuming

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:01 PM)
Kudla will be a rush defensive end.

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:11 PM)
makes sense

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:28 PM)
There was some talk of them having Kudla drop back into coverage, aka LBish

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:37 PM)
surprising to hear that Richardson is most impressive DL

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:42 PM)
but are they only having him in passing situations or will he see time at end throughout the game?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 5:59:54 PM)
I am all for catering to your guys talents, but we need to cater to Carpenters, D'A, Hawks, Pitcocks, richardson's,etc.

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:02 PM)
Rossford: Right - that's flex

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:13 PM)
Sorry RIP.

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:24 PM)
s'ok - there are a million terms out there =)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:28 PM)
They will definitely have Kudla drop. They do a lot of that with Smith this spring

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:52 PM)
Smith hitting someone on a crossing route - yeesh

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 6:00:58 PM)
I want to see Smith

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:03 PM)

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:15 PM)
seems like maybe not, now

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:40 PM)
You mean Troy Smith right? I was talking Will.

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:47 PM)
and not fresh prince

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:51 PM)
That stuff is all cute...but we need to remember to have our guys playing to there strength. Like throwing to tight ends. I love it to keep teams on there toes, but lets get the ball to Galloway and Glenn to make guys miss. Let's let Smith rush

RossfordBuck (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:52 PM)
Yes, Troy

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:01:57 PM)
Jerry, do you think the d line will bring enough pressure to allow the defense to play more zone and less man coverage?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:02:05 PM)
and blitz less?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:02:54 PM)
Turbo said more blitzing on Spielman on Sports

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:02:59 PM)
That scared me

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:01 PM)
MORE blitzing?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:02 PM)
I don't anticipate more aggressive playcalling by dantonio. I would love it, but you just can't until your corners are ready. they are not ready. boy, that is a painful answer to give

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:09 PM)
exactly my thought

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:16 PM)
mine too

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:22 PM)
until the new corners are comfortable, I'd be afraid to run a lot of man coverage

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:30 PM)
no islands until they have more experience

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:36 PM)
I figured they'd try and play a lot of zone early on

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:41 PM)
and less blitzing

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:03:53 PM)
We need smith to bring the pressure. that guy has no idea how much is riding on him. I couldn't count on a better guy thoug

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:37 PM)
Although, if we shut down the run the way I think we are capable of doing, we could get real cute with sending people. the key is making a team lose there balance and become one dimensional

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:04:17 PM)
How many sacks will WS get this year?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:04:23 PM)
what about Anderson? Maybe it was just me, but I think he had a whale of a game vs UM

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:04:48 PM)
Simon off the bench too

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:02 PM)
DL is embarassingly deep

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:03 PM)
I think Smith is tremendous but I also am thinking Anderson would have a big year

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:32 PM)
Anderson will have big year, but WS will have the sacks to show for it

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:38 PM)
Kenny Peterson too

Kirk (Aug 1, 2002 6:05:46 PM)
I like my sleeper to have a big year as Kenny Peterson too. I like the speed at DT he'll bring

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:06:33 PM)
I too am excited for Kenny. He has had a frustrating career. Look for him to break out. Something about those 5th year guys. He knows the drill at this point

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:06:59 PM)
Jerry, what do you think about the gameplan Dantonio came up with vs Northwestern - why didn't we see similar calls versus illinois or South Carolina when they went to a 4-wide one back?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:07:43 PM)
(didn't mean to change the subject guys - just trying to get a feel for Dantonio's style)

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:07:56 PM)
Good Q Rip

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:08:31 PM)
For those of us who don't know the Xs and Os, what WAS the game plan vs NW?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:08:34 PM)
Seems like there was a lot of moment in the front 7 vs Northwestern and Kustok was dumbfounded a lot and he's supposedly a very intelligent QB. Why wouldn't a similar plan have worked vs Illinois and Kittner?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:08:54 PM)
thanks, wow that was fast ;)

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:09:04 PM)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:09:07 PM)
Too be honest, I think our defenders had more bounce and energy during the northwestern game. Illinois has more of a pro style as opposed to Northwestern's. Now South Carolina had a similar attack as will UC. The key against NW was the way we bluffed around and pulled out of blitzes. Our guys sold it better vs NW

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:09:37 PM)
IN a nutshell, our players were more prepared. the calls were the same though

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:09:38 PM)
yes - I can remember going crazy right before Kustok called a timeout one time. He couldn't read the defense

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:09:48 PM)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:21 PM)
NW didn't have the personnel I thought they would have either. Not taking anything away from them, but I like SC and Illinois rosters much more in hindsight

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:31 PM)
Our opponents had 46% 3rd down conversions last year

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:37 PM)
Can we expect to improve?

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:40 PM)

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:46 PM)
I think so

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:51 PM)
you need that to be around 33% or lower.

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:11:07 PM)
sounds good to me

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:10:47 PM)
was the tremendous amount of movement that was evident during the Northwestern game a byproduct of the defense being fired up or was it Dantonio's scheme that required that kind of movement and faking?

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:11:59 PM)
Dantonio encouraged the independent movement (bluffing and faking). It was a key that game. They focused on it all week. The same emphasis wasn't placed in later games. And I blame much of that on the players.

Kirk (Aug 1, 2002 6:12:44 PM)
A couple FYIs.. I was just looking at and they are supposedly doing a top 25 on Sportscenter in a few minutes. Plus, for the first time in 41 years, Washington State is the preseason fave in the Pac 10

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:13:24 PM)
I somehow lost my answer...what i was saying is that the same emphasis wasn't placed at the later games. It was a key and a focus for northwestern. I blame the players more than coaches. movement is encouraged from day 1 in camp

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:14:04 PM)
the pac 10 is stacked

BigBucks (Aug 1, 2002 6:15:27 PM)
WSU's Offense is a given. What about their D?

Kirk (Aug 1, 2002 6:15:42 PM)
Jerry, I don't know if this was mentioned, but what are some of the things that the upperclassmen are going to be doing to the freshmen to "give them a hard time" (like making them stand up and sing, etc)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:16:44 PM)
Oh, they will be singing. I am sure they will be doing skits and singing. The fight song is a must.

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:17:02 PM)
I had to sing freshman year - I hated it

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:15:49 PM)
it's funny, you start by bluffing, then you have to bluff your bluffs, and then you have to bluff those. it is a big mind game. so much film is watched that guys can pick up keys with your faking

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:16:27 PM)
sometimes though, having to decipher that as a QB can throw off your rhythm wouldn't you think?

Kirk (Aug 1, 2002 6:17:30 PM)
WSU's D lost LBs and a heck of a safety, but they should be good up front and I think their secondary could still be good

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:17:40 PM)
it can throw off a linemen, but you play more games with the linemen, tight ends and backs. if you fool those guys and they miss a blocking assignment, you just made a big play. I was never too concerned with the qb

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:17:50 PM)
they gave up over 300 yards rushing a couple of games last year though didn't they?

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:18:34 PM)

rudzinski (Aug 1, 2002 6:19:19 PM)
Losing that safety is huge. those guys can save games. I can't tell you how many times I have seen safeties save a big one

Riptide614 (Aug 1, 2002 6:19:52 PM)
