Lamb Chat Archive: Sept. 12

Basketball reporter Kyle Lamb stopped by Tuesday evening for a free chat session about OSU hoops. Check out the transcript below.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:48:29 PM)
OK folks, we're ready to begin. Let the questions fire away!

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 5:49:00 PM)
Oden's Return?

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 5:49:02 PM)
Any new news on Oden's wrist progress and which game we might see him first?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:49:08 PM)
Popular question, already haha

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:49:53 PM)
Everything is going good with Oden. Coaches still do not know when he will be back, but they do believe he's ahead of schedule. The 'official' timetable is still December or January, but an earlier return has not been ruled out. I would say by this time next month, there will be a better idea of his return

Metalbuck 94 (Sep 12, 2006 5:50:06 PM)
Kyle, do expect a sellout for every game this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:51:03 PM)
I would doubt that. There are still some 'cupcakes' on the schedule that probably won't draw 19,500 people for the game, but tickets for over half of the games this year will be hard to come by, I'm sure. My guess is that a majority will be sold out, but some games will still have seats available

getbucked (Sep 12, 2006 5:51:25 PM)
What are the chances with Hudson

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:52:16 PM)
I think that question will be better answered after we see if Dorenzo Hudson takes a visit to Ohio State in the near future. I've heard one could be scheduled in the next month, but as Dave Telep's article just pointed out, Thad Matta will be going to watch him workout later this week...

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:52:34 PM)
I think Ohio State will be in the mix if they continue to show the type of interest they are at the moment

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 5:52:43 PM)
how are workouts going

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:53:15 PM)
Individual workouts were set to begin tomorrow, I believe. It was this week, but I'm going to have to check up on if they're underway.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:53:45 PM)
I can tell you that reports are very positive as to the work shown by the entire team in the offseason thus far. I don't believe Ohio State could be much more happy with the progress of the incoming freshmen

mike4180 (Sep 12, 2006 5:54:01 PM)
Do you feel that we lead for Gates? Do you see Gates committing before Roe and would this effect Roe decision?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:54:35 PM)
To answer the first part of the question - yes, I think Ohio State, at least as of today, probably holds a slight edge over Xavier. However, it's still early and it probably goes back and forth a lot.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:54:55 PM)
As for the second part, I do not see Gates making a decision before Roe. I think Gates probably won't do anything until next summer, maybe even early fall

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 5:55:09 PM)
Kyle, do you see Butler leading this offense or do you think Conley can come in and take control as a freshman?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:56:07 PM)
I think you can call it the best of both worlds for Ohio State because I see both happening. Get ready for a lot of Conley and Butler on the floor at the same time. I think early in the season, Butler will still be counted on as the leader and floor general, but keep in mind that Matta has reportedly been thrilled with Conley's progress this summer.

Guest (Sep 12, 2006 5:56:21 PM)
Starting lineup for Game #1?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:57:13 PM)
Metalbuck asks starting lineup for game #1 - In my opinion, the season opener starts with Conley, Butler, Lewis or Cook, Harris and Terwilliger

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 5:57:35 PM)
what are you hearing about how many more will become part of 2007 class....2008 also

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:58:39 PM)
The 2007 class appears to be done, with the possible exception of Dorenzo Hudson - a 6-4 guard from Hargrave Military Academy. As far as 2008, Ohio State is reportedly operating under the idea they will award 5 or 6 scholarships to the 2008 class, meaning another 3-4 players.

clark co. (Sep 12, 2006 5:58:52 PM)
what will we see early in season ?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 5:59:22 PM)
Probably a lot of 4-guard looks. I think you will see Matta push the tempo when the time is right also. Then of course, there's the Conley-Butler duo that I think you'll see a lot.

buckeyes324 (Sep 12, 2006 5:59:29 PM)
Kyle, when do you think the next committment will come and who do you think it will be?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:00:08 PM)
William Buford is probably next in line to make a decision. As of today, I believe Ohio State is sitting in excellent shape with him over Michigan State. But until he decides, anything can happen

JohnnyBuckeye (Sep 12, 2006 6:00:24 PM)
Do you think Crater is impacted by how much Conley plays this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:00:56 PM)
Not really. I do think Crater will be impacted by how much Conley plays with Butler at the same time, however. The more they are on the floor the better it will be for Matta to recruit Crater successfully

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 6:01:11 PM)
what do you see as Lewis' role this year

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:02:03 PM)
Most importantly, he needs to be a clutch scorer and also he needs to pick up some slack rebounding. If there's a possible weakness beyond sheer numbers, it might be crashing the boards. I think Lewis may continue his role at times coming off the bench for a boost in that capacity

JohnnyBuckeye (Sep 12, 2006 6:02:29 PM)
This is off the topic, but with everything that has gone on with Bill Walker at NCH, where, if anywhere, are you hearing he plays his college ball?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:02:52 PM)
I'm still hearing Kansas State at this time. But as you have seen from Mayo/Walker over the past year, take nothing for granted

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:02:58 PM)
Hansbrough vs Twig - Can Matt at least hold his own in this matchup?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:03:56 PM)
I wouldn't write off an Oden-Hansbrough matchup just yet. I still think Oden will be back in early/mid December (personal opinion), but before North Carolina isn't totally out of the question. That said, Terwilliger is going to have his hands full if he has to go against Tyler that game. We'll see how much stronger he's gotten in the offseason

JohnnyBuckeye (Sep 12, 2006 6:04:21 PM)
Van Treese or Kenny Frease??? Do you have a preference?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:05:52 PM)
I really have not seen much of Van Treese. Therefore, it would be tough for me to make a comparison. Even worse, I've seen Frease but it was kind of before he really exploded and at the time, I had not been very impressed. I saw a raw, unathletic center. Since then, he's gotten a little leaner and devloped several post moves. I would say to answer the question in some form or another, that Ohio State probably has their sights on Van Treese given the position (PF) and class (2009)

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 6:06:17 PM)
Are there any hidden jem recruits out there that we haven't heard about that could surprise with a visit for the 2008 class?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:07:43 PM)
Possibly in the future, but there are no current visits that I'm aware of that everyone isn't already following. I think there are some kids that might become more of a priority target in the future though. Right now, I'd say it's just a focus on the same 6/7 players

Metalbuck 94 (Sep 12, 2006 6:07:51 PM)
Kyle, how many years would Hudson have available?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:08:00 PM)
He would have four years of eligibility

Bellbuck (Sep 12, 2006 6:08:04 PM)
What should we expect to see out of Hunter this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:08:53 PM)
A decent rebounder and good shot-blocker that could play the four or five. Also a player that can hit from long range and also score inside. Probably will need to improve his perimeter defense, but he's got the athleticism and coordination to do so

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 6:09:01 PM)
how much access does the media get to practices.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:09:29 PM)
Practices as a general rule of thumb are closed to media. There are exceptions here and there, but usually it's limited

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 6:09:53 PM)
Everyone in good shape grade wise for the upcoming season?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:10:27 PM)
Yes. Everyone is good to go. And unlike some silly rumors, Daequan Cook is not ineligible and he's not transferring to Kansas State (ha ha)

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:10:32 PM)
Is Duke still Crater's dream team? If they finally offer will he be gone?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:11:21 PM)
Yes and not necessarily. They are his favorite team, but he's not going to jump on an offer just because they're his dream school. He's looking at a lot of factors and even if Duke offers, he may decide to go somewhere else - whether that's Ohio State, Illinois, Arizona or wherever

mansfieldbuckeye (Sep 12, 2006 6:11:29 PM)
How is Terwilliger looking? Any weight/strength gain?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:11:52 PM)
I've heard positive feedback on Terwilliger thus far from a strength standpoint. He also seems to have improved his range and handle.

RU Serious (Sep 12, 2006 6:12:11 PM)
Speaking of numbers, how many scholarship players are there this year? walkons?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:12:57 PM)
By my count, there is 9 scholarship players (Conley, Cook, Lighty, Oden, Hunter, Butler, Lewis, Harris and Terwilliger). Then, a 10th - Kyle Madsen, can practice but not play

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 6:13:01 PM)
crystal ball for a minute..... Matta, a long-timer in Columbus... 5 years, 10

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:13:52 PM)
Definitely not an easy prediction. I would venture to guess 6-8 years, but I could see him sticking around his entire career if everything goes right

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 6:14:08 PM)
Have you heard about Ivan Harris? Is he progressing?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:14:47 PM)
I have not heard much about Harris this summer. However, I look for Harris to at least build off the solid finish he had to last season. I saw some increased aggression by Harris last year.

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:15:18 PM)
Midnight Madness or Meet the team night?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:15:45 PM)
I don't look for a Midnight Madness this year. But I do anticipate some sort of open practice or something along those lines.

getbucked (Sep 12, 2006 6:15:56 PM)
Many seem to assume Cook is a 1&d, any idea if he is leaning that way?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:16:57 PM)
If Ohio State were fortunate enough to somehow win a national championship this season, and Cook was projected to be a lottery pick or first round selection, I think it would be safe to expect him to leave after one. But unless he meets both criteria, I think two years is most likely as of this moment.

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:17:16 PM)
Who wins the Big 10, Wisky or OSU?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:18:15 PM)
probably will depend on how quickly Oden returns. If he takes a while to get back and adjust to the college nuiances, I would say Wisconsin's experience will be tough to beat. But in sheer talent, Ohio State has the ability to win it, and I would pick them if Oden is able to see a lot of time before the Big Ten starts up

RU Serious (Sep 12, 2006 6:18:19 PM)
How about the future of Coach Groce....any head coaching offers in the near future and if so, how big?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:19:27 PM)
I would say John Groce is going to be a head coach sooner or later. He had a few overtures this past season, but I am thinking he would like to stick around a few years to enjoy coaching these recruits they have brought in. Within a year or two, he'll probably be offered a mid-major type of job and I could see him rapidly ascending up the coaching ladder

Bud (Sep 12, 2006 6:19:39 PM)
of the Thad Five, who do you expect to suprise us the most, and why?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:20:40 PM)
I think David Lighty is somewhat a forgotten man because of his injury. It's been said many times that recovering from a torn ACL takes a little over a year to return to form. By all accounts, Lighty has finally gotten back that explosiveness that everyone talked about with him.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:21:24 PM)
We're all caught up with questions... if you have any you want to ask, we have about 10-15 more minutes...

OSU78 (Sep 12, 2006 6:21:26 PM)
Kyle, who do you think will be the next commitment?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:21:44 PM)
I mentioned this earlier, but if I had to guess, William Buford is the guy I would next keep an eye on

RU Serious (Sep 12, 2006 6:22:04 PM)
Where did Brayden Bell end up? Sylvester Mayes?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:22:21 PM)
Brayden Bell ended up at Utah State and last I knew, Sylvester Mayes was planning to play overseas

Metalbuck 94 (Sep 12, 2006 6:22:35 PM)
Kyle, what do you think of our pre-conference schedule?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:23:34 PM)
Very challenging, but it can only pay dividends for this kind of a team. There's a school of thought that you don't want to put confidence at risk for a young team, but these guys are big time players who won't fold the tents if they lose to a North Carolina or Florida

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:23:40 PM)
Any seating changes this year for the OSU students?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:24:36 PM)
I've heard some conflicting information about this. I had heard that some sort of student seating plan was being devised and I've also heard it wasn't happening this year, after all. I think if there's going to be any changes, it's going to have to happen really soon. Otherwise, probably not happening this year

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 6:24:41 PM)
is matta into the whole midnight madness thing

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:25:23 PM)
No he is not. Matta would rather get two solid practices (Friday evening and Saturday morning) than one late-night event for entertainment purposes

Bud (Sep 12, 2006 6:25:28 PM)
Chris Jent received his degree. Will he be around this season?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:26:00 PM)
That's the plan. I think he'll help again this year and then he can look over his options as to whether pursue a job in the NBA again or maybe be added to a staff on the college level

mike4180 (Sep 12, 2006 6:26:16 PM)
If Buford commits will we still go after Hudson?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:26:59 PM)
I would only be guessing if I answer this question. I would speculate that Ohio State would not close the door on Hudson even if Buford commits, but again, that's only an opinion

Nutty4Bucks (Sep 12, 2006 6:27:08 PM)
Does Matta have any desire to become an NBA coach during his career?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:27:37 PM)
I'm sure it's crossed his mind, but I believe he enjoys the college game and probably prefers that to the NBA right now

mansfieldbuckeye (Sep 12, 2006 6:27:53 PM)
Where is the Big 10 tourney this year?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:28:09 PM)
I believe it's in Chicago one more time and then starts with the 5-year deal in Indianapolis

Metalbuck 94 (Sep 12, 2006 6:28:18 PM)
Kyle, with 8 scholarship players to start the season (before Oden returns), will they carry more than 1 walk on?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:28:51 PM)
If they can find players that can help the team in practice, sure. They won't take walk-ons just to add numbers, however. It would have to be guys that can play a little in practice.

BuckeyeDan26 (Sep 12, 2006 6:29:05 PM)
I know this was probably asked earlier, but what is the current status of Roe and do you think he will end up with the Bucks?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:30:15 PM)
Roe is still wide open. There's still the belief from several sources that it's a 3-team race (Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State) and that it will likely end up that way. But North Carolina, Cincinnati, Illinois, Indiana and some other teams are still hanging in there. My take on Roe is that I don't see him choosing Ohio State, but part of me also doesn't see him turning them down in the long run.

mike4180 (Sep 12, 2006 6:30:39 PM)
will the whole class of 07 make it in for Saturday?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:30:58 PM)
I'm not yet sure about Evan Turner, but I believe the other three tentatively are expected to be there

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:31:13 PM)
Could the hard schedule kill the spirits of such a young team (UNC, Florida)?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:31:57 PM)
I answered this earlier, but my take is that sometimes it can, but when you have guys like Daequan Cook, Mike Conley, Greg Oden and David Lighty that have played against so many top players, I don't think a loss against North Carolina or Florida will kill their passion to get better and such

delane1 (Sep 12, 2006 6:32:06 PM)
What are the odds for both gates and or roe and is Gates go to visit anytime soon

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:32:59 PM)
Yancy Gates as of this moment looks to be heading to Columbus for Saturday's game, although I don't believe it's set in stone. My personal opinion is that no team will get both Gates and Roe, but Ohio State seemingly believes it's not out of the question. I do believe it's safe to say they're interested in taking both

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:33:19 PM)
Who will (or should) lead the Bucks in scoring?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:33:52 PM)
I tend to believe that honor will go to Ron Lewis, but I could really see Oden scoring 16-18 points a game too.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:34:21 PM)
I can take about 3 more questions

buckmark (Sep 12, 2006 6:34:27 PM)
read about matta's banquet at his house for people with previous ties to the program (players, coaches, trainers, etc.). Classy move to keep foormer people involved

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:34:44 PM)
It's definitely a good way to establish pride in the program

mike4180 (Sep 12, 2006 6:34:51 PM)
Has Hunter played in any pick up games since being in Cbus? Have you heard anything about him or his game?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:19 PM)
I believe Hunter just got into Columbus this past week. At the time, most of the players were gone, so I don't believe he had participated in any open gyms.

digi8 (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:26 PM)
How much do you think Lighty and Cook will contribute this season?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:40 PM)
If Ohio State is going to have a good season, they need to contribute a ton

hammbone1928 (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:46 PM)
What's the name of the recruit at Hargrove Militay?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:51 PM)
That would be Dorenzo Hudson

RU Serious (Sep 12, 2006 6:35:56 PM)
Jamar a preseason All-Big Ten selection?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:36:41 PM)
I would have a hard time believing otherwise, honestly. You look at the season he had last year as a sophomore, and he was one of the most underappreciated guards in the conference. This year, he arguably enters the season as the best PG in the conference

mike4180 (Sep 12, 2006 6:36:50 PM)
any news on Hopson and how much is he interested in OSU?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:37:20 PM)
He has a lot of interest, but Tennessee seems to have gotten out to a nice jump with him. It will be interesting to see if Ohio State gets him on campus in the near future

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:37:36 PM)
I'll field one more question

MJ (Sep 12, 2006 6:37:50 PM)
Where would you rank the Buckeyes without Oden?

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:38:22 PM)
Personally, I would say Ohio State is probably a 15-25 type of team without him. With him, I think they can be a top 5 team by the end of the year and a top 10 team early on

delane1 (Sep 12, 2006 6:38:44 PM)
If OSU strikes out on both Gates and Roe what other PF or C what they go after for a fallback

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:39:07 PM)
They already have B.J. Mullens committed, so center won't need any other fallback guys. But if they wanted to, Kenny Frease would be another option.

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:39:12 PM)
OK folks

Kyle S. Lamb (Sep 12, 2006 6:39:16 PM)
