Sunday Morning QB: Far From Perfection

We look back at the weekend that was in college football, including the upshot from Separation Saturday. We have notes and comments on Ohio State's win over Cincinnati. Plus, we look at the headlines in the weekend for the Big Ten and college football world at-large.

Welcome to Sunday Morning Quarterback, a column I intend to stand each week as a quick read on the news, notes and opinion on Ohio State's weekly game as well as the Big Ten and the college football nation at large.

We start with a look at OSU's 37-7 win over Cincinnati:

* In my Chat on Thursday, I was somewhat perplexed by the way people were portraying Ohio State's win at Texas. OSU fans, it seems, seek perfection. Anything less is just not acceptable.

In looking ahead at the game against Cincinnati, I opined, "It would be nice to meet (Jim Tressel's) goals (200 rushing, 250 passing), win comfortably, tackle on defense and get a lot of guys in. It seems that's the only way everybody will be happy (ha ha).

"You may be waiting a long time before they play a game where they tick all of those objectives off. Cincinnati is going to make some plays in there somewhere."

I think those words proved prophetic as we watched the Cincinnati game unfold. The Bearcats came out with some energy and their schemes were solid. Hence, Ohio State trailed much of the first half before it pulled itself together and played a solid second half to get the win.

It was far from a perfect performance. Offensively, the strong second half helped block out a first half marred by a spate of holding penalties.

"I don't know what good thing there is out of this game yet, other than being very thankful to get a win," said offensive coordinator Jim Bollman. "Give Cincinnati all of the credit in the world. I thought they did a great job.

"But we certainly can not play like this. We need to play with a little bit more zip and get a few more things done a little bit sooner."

Some of the blame was turned on the offensive line, which had at least three holding penalties, two personal fouls and two false start penalties.

"They absolutely drive me bananas," Bollman said of the penalties. "You can practice it and have guys shift and work on it until you get it right."

Quarterback Troy Smith came through it and had a solid day, completing 21 of 30 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

"There were just minor things, but the plays got better as the game went on because we got a better feel of the Bearcats and the field started to open up," said Smith, who has now gone five full games without throwing an interception. "We didn't fuss and bicker over the small things when things were going wrong because we just moved on to the next play."

Wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez, the toast of the town after his big day against Texas, said UC's defense came out with a strong plan against the Buckeyes.

"We had seen a lot of the defense on film but as soon as we stepped on the field the coaches said forget about it because he (UC coach Mark Dantoino) is going to throw something all new at us," said Gonzalez, who had five catches for 85 yards. "I saw a formation with only one down linemen, I had never seen that."

* One of the big cogs for the Ohio State offense is tailback Antonio Pittman. He enjoyed a workmanlike day with 155 yards on 16 carries. That included a nifty 48-yard touchdown run to give OSU a commanding 27-7 lead early in the fourth quarter.

Pittman sometimes gets lost in the shuffle when national media members comment on the dynamic duo of Smith and Ted Ginn Jr. That doesn't bother him, though.

"I feel as if I do my part, I get enough attention from that," Pittman said. "I don't feel like I need the big name or anything like that. I get recognized."

Bollman added, "He's a guy that we certainly don't forget about."

The coordinator was glad to see Pittman, once again, get stronger as the game went on. He helped the Buckeyes put the Notre Dame and Texas games away with strong running in the fourth quarter.

"That happens," Bollman said. "Many times in games, you'll see a running back get in a groove. They find themselves and the line makes adjustments on things they are doing."

UC was still lingering within two touchdowns until Pittman was able to turn the corner and beat the Bearcats defense down the sideline for the long score.

"Any time we can get a big play like that out of the running game, that's good for us," Bollman said. "We've had some 12- and 15-yard runs. I don't remember us having a big one like that yet this year. That was great."

Pittman was asked what that long touchdown means for the offense.

"It shows a lot," he said. "It just shows how many different schemes we can hit a team with. We can run the ball. We can run Troy. We can throw the ball or Ted can run or Beanie (Wells) or Mo (Wells) can run. It shows a lot."

* One of the neat facets of Pittman's long touchdown run was the block delivered by Ginn on UC's Mike Mickens at about the 7-yard line.

Pittman was probably going to be fine and score, but Ginn wasn't taking any chances. He got into proper position and peeled off Mickens, who had an angle on Pittman.

"I missed the first block on the line of scrimmage," Ginn said. "I had to follow it up and just go with him. I saw the guy coming, so I just made the block."

Pittman joked he did not need the help.

"I had him beat," Pittman said with a smile. "No, seriously, Ted threw me a great block."

It is that kind of attention to detail that will serve the Buckeyes well as the season wears on.

* Ohio State took an early 3-0 lead, but Cincinnati then drove 80 yards in a quick five plays to grab its 7-3 lead.

That drive included a 28-yard pass from Dustin Grutza to Derrick Stewart, a 23-yard scramble by Grutza and the 22-yard touchdown pass to Jared Martin, who made his first career catch.

"We weren't really shellshocked," said OSU middle linebacker James Laurinaitis, who tallied nine tackles, one sack and one interception. "We knew they were going to come in here pumped. We knew our offense would figure it out sooner or later and it was just a matter of time until we figured out what they were doing to us. We had to do our part and we did a decent job today."

The good news is the fact UC only managed 124 yards over the game's final 51 minutes as the Buckeyes – as they always seem to do – made the proper adjustments and slammed the door shut.

"I think we started out a little bit slow," said linebacker Marcus Freeman. "I think the coaches did a great job of calming us down and we executed after that."

Contrary to how it appeared, Freeman said the Buckeyes took Cincinnati seriously.

"Our seniors did a great job of getting us prepared and letting us know Cincinnati was the most important game we faced," he said.

* One guy who enjoyed every moment of the OSU-Cincinnati game was Cleveland Glenville coach Ted Ginn Sr. Between the two teams, he had 10 of his former players on the field.

Ohio State has seven players on its roster from Cleveland Glenville. They include Bryant Browning, Ted Ginn Jr., Jamario O'Neal, Robert Rose, Ray Small, Troy Smith, and Curtis Terry. Cincinnati has three players from Glenville: Freddie Lenix, Curtis Smith and Angelo Craig.

"I'm pretty proud of that," Ginn Sr. said afterwards.

The Glenville contingent made quite an impact with the exploits of Troy Smith and Ted Ginn Jr., who caught a pair of touchdown passes. Rose notched his first career sack, Terry had three tackles and Small had a 36-yard grab of a Justin Zwick bomb. Craig had a pair of tackles with a tackle-for-loss for UC.

"It was good to see that today," Ginn Jr. said.

Terry said there was some jawing between the Glenville players.

"It's just great," he said. "It was a great atmosphere playing with and against a lot of people you know. It was just a rivalry going back and forth. Everybody was just trying to get after each other and play their best game so they could get on the phone afterwards and jawjack."

* Ohio State will host Bowling Green on Oct. 7. Other than that game, though, the Buckeyes will be concentrating on their quest for the Big Ten championship the rest of the way. That quest begins next Saturday when the Buckeyes host Penn State.

"It's going to be a big one," Pittman said. "Last year, we went to their place and they got us good. This year, we just want to come out here and keep our streak going and play like we're the No. 1 team."

OSU's 17-10 loss at Penn State – under extreme white-out conditions at Beaver Stadium – left a bad taste in everybody's mouth, Pittman said.

"That is something that has stuck with us for a year," Pittman said. "We're on a mission to get something done. We are taking it one game at a time. It's going to be a battle every week from here on out.

"That's the first Big Ten game. We have to take it to them. We will have to take it to them up front. "

Center Doug Datish summed up what lies ahead for the Buckeyes.

"In my experience, the Big Ten is a tough, tough road," Datish said. "You go through that whole schedule, it's every team's tough. You go to great places to play. The fans are crazy. They come here and our fans are crazy. You have great environments, great schedule. With we know our goal here every year is to win the conference because you win the conference, you go to a big-time bowl game."

Troy Smith added, "I'm kind of biased when I say that I think Big Ten football is the best football in the nation. You get all sorts of weather. You get cold, you get hot, you get rain and you get all kinds of teams. Just like Doug said, it's crazy fans. The love for the game in the Big Ten is unparalleled across the nation and I think it's the best football all around."

Now for a look around the Big Ten:

* No. 11 Michigan put the memory of last year's 7-5 season firmly in the rear view mirror by blistering No. 2 Notre Dame 47-21 in South Bend. The 47 points are the most point scored against ND at home in 46 seasons.

Chad Henne threw three touchdown passes to Mario Manningham, and the Wolverines intercepted Brady Quinn three times and shut down the rest of the Irish offense. To add insult to injury, UM's Prescott Burgess returned an interception for a touchdown and Lamarr Woodley returned a late Quinn fumble 54 yards for a score.

The Wolverines ended a two-game losing streak to Notre Dame as well as a three-game slide at Notre Dame Stadium, where they had not won since 1994.

This win should end talk – at least for a few weeks – about the status of UM coach Lloyd Carr. It also likely takes ND out of the national championship picture and severely curtails any hope Quinn had of winning the Heisman Trophy.

* Drew Tate is back in the saddle for No. 16 Iowa, which rallied from a 14-3 deficit for a 27-17 home win over instate rival Iowa State. Tate threw for 274 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Iowa State had won six of the last eight games over Iowa, including a 23-3 ISU win in Ames last year.

Tate, who was 26 of 38 passing, missed Iowa's double overtime win at Syracuse last week due to an abdominal strain. Iowa was without receiver Calvin Davis, who is out after suffering a torn Achilles' tendon.

* Purdue QB Curtis Painter passed for 416 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score, leading the Boilermakers to a 38-28 win over Ball State.

* Minnesota blasted Temple 62-0 as Logan Payne caught six passes for 136 yards and four touchdowns. Minnesota handed Temple its second 62-0 loss in a row and 15th straight defeat. The Owls have been outscored 124-0 in the last two games, including a 62-0 loss to Louisville at home last week.

* No. 25 Penn State downed Division I-AA Youngstown State 37-3. PSU was left to schedule YSU a year ago when Louisiana Lafayette backed out of a scheduled game.

Tony Hunt ran for 143 yards and a touchdown, A.J. Wallace scored on a 76-yard reverse for Penn State. PSU outgained YSU 568-184 and piled up 389 yards rushing.

* Syracuse ended an 11-game losing streak with a 31-21 victory at Illinois. The Orange won for the first time since beating Buffalo 31-0 in the second game of last season.

* Even worse for the Big Ten, Indiana fell to Division I-AA Southern Illinois 35-28. SIU ended a 20-game losing streak to I-A opponents. The Salukis' victory also marked the first time a team from the Gateway Conference defeated a Big Ten opponent.

The Hoosiers gave up 254 yards rushing and blew a 14-0 first-half lead. IU was without coach Terry Hoeppner, who had brain surgery Wednesday. The Hoosiers also missed wide receiver James Hardy, who was suspended Tuesday.

* Wisconsin remained unbeaten with a 14-0 win over visiting San Diego State. P.J. Hill ran for 184 yards and a touchdown in. Hill is the first Badgers freshman to run for 100 yards or more in three consecutive games since Anthony Davis did it in four straight in 2001.

* Michigan State remained undefeated with a strong 38-23 win at Pittsburgh. Drew Stanton threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 105 yards and a score. Javon Ringer capped the win with a 71-yard touchdown run for the Spartans, who host Notre Dame Saturday.

And a glance at headlines nationally

* It was billed as Separation Saturday with seven games matching top-25 teams – the most on any one day in the regular season since 1993. When the dust settled, eight ranked teams tasted defeat on a turbulent Saturday.

It was not a good weekend for the ACC, which saw Miami (Fla.) and Maryland lose nonconference match-ups. Even worse, the Big 12 saw Oklahoma, Nebraska, Iowa State, Texas Tech, Kansas and Colorado drop key games outside the conference.

* No. 3 Auburn survived its SEC West showdown with No. 6 LSU, winning 7-3 at home. LSU had five drives into Auburn territory end without points. It was the lowest scoring game at Auburn since 1973 and marked the first time these teams met with each in the top 10 since 1972.

* No. 4 USC had too much for No. 19 Nebraska. QB John David Booty was 25-for-36 with 257 yards, no interceptions and three touchdown passes in the Trojans' 28-10 win over the ‘Huskers.

All-American receiver Dwayne Jarrett caught 11 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. He became USC's career touchdown receptions leader with 31, breaking Mike Williams' record of 30.

* No. 18 Oregon made a furious comeback to defeat No. 15 Oklahoma 34-33. The Ducks took their first win in seven tries against OU by scoring a pair of touchdowns in the final 72 seconds – one of them following a disputed onside kick. Oregon then blocked an OU field goal on the final play to preserve the win.

* No. 8 Texas avoided losing two straight games for the first time since 1999 with a 52-7 rout of Rice. The Longhorns rebounded from last week's 24-7 loss to Ohio State with 493 yards and 22 first downs to the Owls' 168 yards and 11 first downs. But, Texas also committed a school-record 19 penalties for 148 yards. On one drive late in the first, three straight penalties forced the Longhorns to settle for a field goal.

* No. 23 Boston College outlasted BYU 30-23 in double overtime. Matt Ryan threw a touchdown pass to Tony Gonzalez on the first play of the second overtime. BC then intercepted a BYU pass – an interception originally ruled an incompletion and then overturned on review – to end the game.

"Thank God we have instant replay this year," said BC coach Tom O'Brien, who notched a school-record 69th win.

* No. 12 Louisville rendered No. 17 Miami (Fla.) irrelevant on the national scene this year with a resounding 31-7 win at Louisville. QB Brian Brohm threw for 181 yards and touchdown before leaving the game with an injury to his throwing hand. Brohm, who fell on his right hand in the third quarter while scrambling, will have surgery Sunday and will be out three to six weeks. Louisville already lost standout RB Michael Bush for the year in the season opener.

UL backup QB Hunter Cantwell finished up and threw for 113 yards and a touchdown. Miami dropped to 1-2 for the first time since 1997 and the call for Larry Coker's head should really pick up some steam now.

* The Bowden bowl went to Clemson, which won at No. 9 Florida State 27-20 for the first time in 17 years. James Davis' 1-yard run with 8 seconds left gave the Tigers their first win at Florida State since 1989. Clemson benefited from an instant replay ruling on a fumble where they retained possession after the onfield officials had given the ball to FSU. Clemson and coach Tommy Bowden downed FSU and coach Bobby Bowden for the third time in four years.

* No. 20 TCU extended the longest winning streak in NCAA Division I-A to 13 games with a 12-3 victory over No. 24 Texas Tech. The Horned Frogs are one win shy of matching the school record, a streak that included the Frogs' undefeated national championship in 1938.

"I'll be nice about that and politically correct like you're supposed to. But that was the sorriest offensive effort I've ever seen. Today, I coached the worst offense in America," said Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

* No. 22 Arizona State extended Colorado's losing streak to seven straight with a 21-3 win.

* No. 7 Florida made coach Urban Meyer a winner in his first visit to Tennessee. The Gators rallied for a 21-20 win over the 13th-ranked Vols.

Chris Leak threw for 199 yards and a TD and Reggie Nelson intercepted a pair of UT passes, including one late, to help the Gators pull out this key win in the SEC East.

* Toledo knocked off Kansas 37-31 in double overtime on Friday night. Neither team scored in the first overtime. Toledo then denied Kansas in the second overtime as Bo Martin intercepted KU's Kerry Meier, setting up the game winning 25-yard TD run by Toledo's Jalen Parmele on the next play. Kansas has only won six road games in the last 10 years.

* On Thursday night, No. 5 West Virginia grabbed a 28-0 lead and cruised to a 45-24 win over rival Maryland. RB Steve Slaton had 195 yards and two touchdowns for the host Mountaineers.

* Heisman Watch: Notre Dame's Brady Quinn is going to probably need divine intervention to get back into this discussion. Nothing is impossible, but ND's spectacular loss at home to Michigan really put a crimp in Quinn's Heisman hopes. That makes Ohio State's Troy Smith the likely front runner, although he can now see some people like Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson (even with a loss), USC's Dwayne Jarrett and West Virginia's Steve Slaton in his rear view mirror.

* My new top 15: Ohio State, USC, West Virginia, Auburn, Louisville, Florida, Michigan, Oregon, Texas, Iowa, Georgia, Virginia Tech, Oklahoma, LSU, TCU.

* Games To Watch: Virginia-Georgia Tech (Thursday), Northwestern-Nevada (Friday), Penn State-Ohio State, Notre Dame-Michigan State, Iowa State-Texas, Wisconsin-Michigan, Louisville-Kansas State, Arizona State-California.

We will wrap up each week with a look at how OSU's opponents fared and check out who they face next week.

The love for the game in the Big Ten is unparalleled across the nation and I think it's the best football all around.\"

\"Thank God we have instant replay this year,\" said BC coach Tom O'Brien, who notched a school-record 69th win.

\"I'll be nice about that and politically correct like you're supposed to. But that was the sorriest offensive effort I've ever seen. Today, I coached the worst offense in America,\" said Texas Tech coach Mike Leach.

Notre Dame's Brady Quinn is going to probably need divine intervention to get back into this discussion.
