Paterno's Lions Prepare For No. 1 Ohio State

The Big Ten's reigning co-champions -- and a pair of last year's Bowl Championship Series winners from a year ago -- will go head to head as No. 24 Penn State meets top-ranked Ohio State Saturday at Ohio Stadium (3:30 p.m., ABC). This will mark the 18th time PSU coach Joe Paterno will lead the Nittany Lions against Ohio State. Click here for more.

The Big Ten's reigning co-champions – and two of last year's Bowl Championship Series bowl winners -- will collide when No. 1-ranked Ohio State hosts No. 24 Penn State in Saturday's conference opener at Ohio Stadium (3:30 p.m., ABC).

The Buckeyes are hoping to avenge last year's 17-10 loss on a rainy night at raucous Beaver Stadium. But some of the bloom came off of this long-awaited match-up when Penn State was drilled 41-17 by Notre Dame on Sept. 9.

PSU coach Joe Paterno was asked if that road trip to ND would prepare his team for this trip to Ohio State.

"I don't know how much benefit you get out of getting your ears kicked in, except for the fact that you learn that you can't turn the ball over," Paterno said. "We played hard against Notre Dame. We only punted the ball twice. We had 25 first downs against them, which is more than they had. You just try to build on the fact that if we just have patience, hang onto the ball and don't make dumb mistakes, we will be competitive.

"We certainly were not competitive in that game. We let the game get out of hand on us in a hurry. I suppose you learn from that kind of stuff. I am not sure how much you learn from that, but you learn every time you play. If you are a football player, you should learn. You should learn when a guy is blocking you, what you didn't do and what the other guy did do. I think you learn, but what specific things did we learn? I don't know."

Paterno, who turns 80 in December, is back for his 41st year as the PSU head coach. This will be the 18th time he has prepared a team to play Ohio State. He is 7-10 all-time against the Buckeyes, although he is winless in six trips to Columbus since the Nittany Lions joined the conference in 1993. The Buckeyes have won those six games by an average of 20.7 points.

Paterno knows stealing a win this time at the Horseshoe won't be any easier.

"I keep coming back to the coaching because I think they make great adjustments," Paterno said. "You have to be ready to adjust after they adjust and back and forth. I don't think you can figure there is going to be any one particular part of that football game. I think it is going to be a tough football game if we are in it and can stay with them for awhile and if we have a shot of winning it, it will be a question of whether we can make a couple of plays someplace down the line.

"To say whether we get off to a good start that it is going to make a big difference, Ohio State is too good for that and they have been in too many big games for that. We could go ahead two touchdowns and the crowd may be out of it until (Troy) Smith goes back there and throws a pass to (Ted) Ginn and they are right back in it. We just have a good, tough football game ahead of us.

"We just need to go out and play. It is a game. Let's go out and have a little fun. Who knows what can happen?"

Penn State's loss at Notre Dame was predicated on turnovers as quarterback Anthony Morelli threw an interception and lost a fumble, which was returned for an Irish touchdown. PSU tailback Tony Hunt also fumbled.

"I felt coming out of Notre Dame that we just turned the ball over too many times," Paterno said. "We had three turnovers and Notre Dame didn't have any turnovers. Notre Dame plays against Michigan the next week and has five turnovers. We had our chances against Notre Dame. We had a chance at a couple of interceptions and didn't get them.

"We fouled up a couple of field goal situations. I felt we had to come out of there and get a little better at doing some of that stuff. I think we have improved in some areas. We know what we have to do to be better and I know what we have to do to win on the road. Whether we are good enough to handle a team of the caliber of Ohio State, you are looking at a team that really has a right to say they are the No. 1 team in the country and we have to play them away.

"I just want our kids to play with some poise, concentrate, play every play hard and see what happens. Beyond that, I don't know what to tell you. There is no magical combination. We are going to play a superior football team -- one of the better football teams we have played in, probably, the last five or six years."

Morelli's The Man

Morelli, a junior, was considered one of the nation's top quarterback prospects coming out of the Pittsburgh area two years ago. He played only sparingly behind Zack Mills in 2004 and Big Ten MVP Michael Robinson last year.

Morelli (6-4, 220) excels in the pocket. He has completed 52 percent of his passes for 549 yards and four touchdowns against one interception.

"I think Anthony is getting better," Paterno said. "Anthony's biggest problem is that he has so much confidence in his arm that we hit a couple of big ones and then he wants to throw the ball deep. The big thing we have tried to do is to get him to concentrate on getting the ball underneath a little bit more and the ‘take what they give you' kind of approach. He is getting better all the time. He is better in the huddle. His kids are responding to him. I think he is on the right track. He is going to be a good quarterback."

Hunt, a bullish 6-2, 230-pound senior, has become the leader at tailback for PSU. He had 1,047 yards last year and has amassed 253 yards and two touchdowns through three games this year.

"I think Tony is a really good back," Paterno said. "He can do it all. He can catch the ball. A lot of people do not realize how good of a blocker he is. He is a strong runner. He is a 225- to 230 lb. back. I think he has been a really fine, solid back for us. He really has been. He came here when Austin Scott got most of the publicity and he has kept his mouth shut and worked hard at it and right now, I think, is one of the better backs in the country all-around.

"Some guys are flashier and maybe can do some things as far as running with the football, but we use him as a lead blocker sometimes. We don't throw the ball enough to him, because he is a good receiver, and until Saturday, probably didn't have him run enough. We have to get more out of him, let me put it that way."

Morelli has an array of receivers to throw to, including sophomores Derrick Williams, Deon Butler and Jordan Norwood. Williams occasionally lines up in the backfield at tailback and sometimes even at quarterback. He has recovered from the broken arm he suffered in the midseason loss to Michigan last year.

"I don't think we are trying to pattern him after anybody," Paterno said of the highly acclaimed Williams, who has one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown so far this year. "We just want to try to give Derrick a chance to do some of the things he does best. I think he has done well. Obviously, things won't come as easy for him as they did last year when a lot of people didn't realize how good he was. We have got to spot him a little bit more because we are asking him to do so many things."

Senior Kevin Darling is a new starter at tight end, while senior left tackle Levi Brown (6-5, 328) is the only returning starter on the offensive line. Ohio natives Gerald Cadogan (6-5, 311) and Robert Price (6-0, 299) have stepped in at the guard spots. Sophomore A.Q. Shipley (6-1, 297) is the new starter at center.

"I think Shipley is getting better," Paterno said. "There again, a lot of people don't realize that he did not play very much last year and most of the time he played, he was on defense. I think he is getting better. He is getting a little bit more confidence in some things and a little bit more aware of some stunts and things of that sort that go on. The way the game is played today, with so much zone blocking and so much blitzing, he has not only got to be a good athlete, but a very aware athlete and, I think, Shipley is slowly becoming that."

New Look On Defense

Penn State returned just four starters from its stellar defense of a year ago. None of the returnees is in the secondary, though.

Up front, senior Jay Alford (6-3, 288) is back at defensive tackle. Senior Tim Shaw (6-1, 237) started at middle linebacker last year, but now plays as a stand-up defensive end. Seniors Ed Johnson and Jim Shaw round out the line.

At linebacker, PSU may have one of the best corps in the country. Butkus Award winner Paul Posluszny, a 6-2, 238-pound senior, was likely set to turn pro after last season. But he suffered a knee injury in the Orange Bowl win over Florida State and opted to return.

Posluszny is joined by junior Dan Connor (6-3, 225) at the other outside spot and sophomore Sean Lee (6-2, 222) at the inside spot. These three are PSU's top three tacklers with Connor with 30, Posluszny with 27 and Lee with 16.

The Nittany Lions had to turn over their secondary. The one saving grace is that sophomore Justin King, now starting at corner, saw time last year as the nickel back. He is joined by sophomore Tony Davis at corner and senior Donnie Johnson and sophomore Anthony Scirrotto at the safety spots. Senior Nolan McCready fills in as the nickel back.

Special teams have been an adventure for PSU so far. Kicker Kevin Kelly is 6 of 9 on field goals with all three misses between 30 and 39 yards. Punter Jeremy Kapinos is averaging just 34.1 yards per boot.

Also Notable

* Ohio State is riding a 10-game winning streak, dating to last year's loss at Penn State. That streak is second to TCU's streak of 13 in terms of active winning streaks nationally.

* OSU's record as the nation's No. 1 team is now 54-8-1 after last week's win over Cincinnati.

* In the records department, under Jim Tressel Ohio State is 33-4 at home, 30-10 in Big Ten games, 17-3 in home Big Ten games and 22-7 against ranked teams. The four home losses under Tressel were against Wisconsin and Illinois in 2001, Wisconsin in 2004 and Texas in 2005.

* The Buckeyes have won seven straight home games and 29 of their last 31 home outings.

* Penn State is 4-8 all-time against the nation's No. 1-ranked team. This will be PSU's first game against a No. 1 team since 1998, when the Nittany Lions visited OSU and lost 28-9.

Paterno's teams are 4-6 all-time against No. 1 teams. Two of those wins gave PSU national championships – against Georgia in the 1983 Sugar Bowl and Miami (Fla.) in the 1987 Fiesta Bowl.

Paterno was asked which of his team's games against No. 1 teams stand out.

"Obviously, the ones you win," he joked. "We played against Miami and won that one. Georgia was No. 1 when we played them and we won that one. You guys know more about that stuff than I do. I haven't got time to keep going back, ‘Hey, 1912, your first game Paterno, what did you do?'

"I haven't got time. I am worried about a kid by the name of Smith who is one of the better football players we have played against since I have been at Penn State. He has a cast of characters that look pretty darn good."

* Paterno, of course, is one of the great coaching legends in the history of college football. He ranks second all-time in games coached as a head coach with 478, trailing only Amos Alonzo Stagg's mark of 548. Including games as an assistant coach, this will be Paterno's 631st game since he joined the PSU staff in 1950.

Since Paterno became the PSU head coach in 1966, there have been 775 head coaching changes in Division I-A. Lyndon Johnson was the president of the United State and Paterno has seen eight different presidencies during his tenure as a head coach.

Paterno became the winningest coach in Division I-A history when Penn State defeated Ohio State in 2001. Florida State's Bobby Bowden eventually caught Paterno and remains as the leader with 361 wins to Paterno's 356.

Amazingly, Paterno is one of 12 coaches in Big Ten history to win 100 games at a conference institution. He has a record of 109-51 overall since PSU joined the Big Ten in 1993.

* Six Penn State players hail from Ohio – Cadogan (from Portsmouth), Davis (Warren), Johnson (Cincinnati North College Hill), Price (Shaker Heights), backup quarterback Daryll Clark (Youngstown) and defensive end Jed Hill (Struthers).

* Six Ohio State players hail from Pennsylvania – walk-on offensive lineman Doug Ebner (from Hershey), wide receiver Devon Lyons (North Braddock), tight end Andy Miller (Washington), offensive lineman Kyle Mitchum (Erie), tight end Rory Nicol (Beaver) and offensive lineman Jon Skinner (Mount Carmel).

* ESPN College Game Day will return to Columbus to host its show from 10 a.m.-noon Saturday. As always, they will be located south of St. John Arena. Former OSU quarterback Kirk Herbstreit will be joined by co-hosts Chris Fowler and Lee Corso.

Game Day was at Texas for the OSU game and at Penn State for last year's OSU-PSU game. The last appearance in Columbus was for last year's Texas game.

* Former Penn State defensive back Adam Taliaferro will be in Columbus to attend the game six years to the day after he suffered a serious spinal cord injury during the OSU-PSU game. Taliaferro was treated at OSU Medical Center.

At halftime, Taliaferro will join current Buckeye Tyson Gentry, who suffered a serious spinal cord injury during OSU's spring practice, in an effort to bring attention to spinal cord injury research.
