Buckeyes Turn Focus To Night Game At Iowa

With their win over Penn State in the Big Ten opener in the books, members of the top-ranked Ohio State football team turned their attention to this Saturday's road night game at No. 13 Iowa (8 p.m., ABC). The Buckeyes recall the 33-7 loss they suffered in Iowa City two years ago. Click here for more.

The eyes of the nation will again be on Ohio State as the top-ranked Buckeyes travel Saturday to No. 13 Iowa.

It may mark the first time in Big Ten history that a conference game will be televised nationally by a broadcast network in prime time as ABC will show the game with an 8 p.m. Eastern start. It will also be just the second night game ever at Iowa's Kinnick Stadium, which figures to be off the hook.

There are a ton of storylines surrounding this game. Two years ago, Iowa defeated OSU 33-7 in handing the Buckeyes their worst conference road defeat since a 41-7 pasting at Indiana in 1988. That defeat also stands as the worst in coach Jim Tressel's five-plus years at the helm at Ohio State.

Last year, OSU gained a shade of revenge with a 31-6 win in Columbus. That victory started the Buckeyes on their way toward a share of the Big Ten title.

"We are looking forward to going back there," OSU wide receiver Anthony Gonzalez said after Saturday's 28-6 win over Penn State. "That atmosphere was so crazy. I love those kinds of games. This will be the first time we've been back there.

"The thing that keeps coming to my mind was how crazy those fans were. That was during the day and we were coming off two losses in a row. I can only imagine what it's going to be like at night when we're both undefeated."

Gonzalez summed it up when he said, "I anticipate it being probably the most electric atmosphere we've ever played in. I anticipate their crowd being louder than Penn State's last year."

Defensive tackle David Patterson also looked ahead to Iowa (4-0, 1-0), which moved up one spot to 13th in the polls after its 24-7 win at Illinois.

"Well, Iowa is a great team," Patterson said. "It's going to be a great challenge for our football team. We're just going to do everything we can and our coach is going to prepare us as hard as he can to try our best, to go up there and execute and be focused. Anytime you're playing a great team like Iowa, you have to be on top of your game."

Iowa is where Troy Smith replaced an injured Justin Zwick as the OSU quarterback. He has had a death grip on the job pretty much since that game two years ago.

"You can't say enough about any team you play in the Big Ten especially if it's Iowa at home," Smith said. "They're going to have a great football team. Having a veteran quarterback (Drew Tate), great guys up front, and a good defense, they are going to test our football team. But we just have to execute the game plan and hopefully we can come out with a win."

A Terrible Memory

Next to nothing went Ohio State's way at Iowa two years ago. Iowa piled up 448 yards total offense, while holding the Buckeyes to just 177 yards. OSU netted an abysmal 29 yards on 27 rushing attempts.

Tate enjoyed one of his biggest games as the Iowa quarterback, throwing for 330 yards and three touchdowns. The Kinnick Stadium fans chanted "Oh-and-three" at the Buckeyes, who fell to 0-3 to open the Big Ten season for the first time since 1943.

"Two years ago was the worst football experience any of us have ever had," said Gonzalez, who made his first career reception in that game. "It was terrible. They beat us in every phase of the game – offense, defense and special teams. That's something that I think has been in the backs of the minds of the players who were there.

"That's the lowest we have ever been collectively since we've been here. For most of us, that is probably the lowest we've ever been in anything. It's just not something you're accustomed to. We took one on the chin that week."

Gonzalez said that game rocked the OSU program to its core. With Smith inserted as the starting quarterback, the Buckeyes went 4-1 over their final five regular season games to reach the Alamo Bowl. A win there over Oklahoma State salvaged an 8-4 season.

"That was one of those games where you come back and you're not sure what is going to happen after that," Gonzalez said. "We came back and totally shuffled our lineup. Changes were made all across the board. That was a real eye opener and a turning point in that season."

Smith threw a late touchdown pass to then-freshman tight end Rory Nicol to avoid what would have been OSU's first shutout loss since the 28-0 loss at Michigan in 1993.

"That was a wake-up call," Smith said. "That was a game where they let us know if you come into any school's stadium unfocused this can happen to you. I hope that guys don't work off that revenge factor. You have to play every week in a different way and hopefully you can get wins."

Since that defeat, Ohio State has gone 18-3. One of those wins was last year's victory over the Hawkeyes in Columbus. To get his team in the right frame of mind for that game, Tressel and his staff posted the 33-7 final score from the year before all around the Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

Safety Donte Whitner, now with the NFL's Buffalo Bills, confirmed that the coaches even laminated signs with the score on them and placed them in the shower.

"Yes, in the shower – where the water is," Whitner said in near disbelief.

Accordingly, OSU succeeded in cooling Tate off in that game. The Buckeyes outgained Iowa 530-137 with Tate going 22 of 39 passing for 146 yards with an interception. He was sacked five times.

Smith and tailback Antonio Pittman came up big for the Buckeyes. Smith completed 13 of 19 passes for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He also had 18 carries for 127 yards and two touchdowns. He was joined over the century mark by tailback Antonio Pittman, who ended up with a career-high 171 yards on 28 carries. This marked the first time in 29 years that an OSU quarterback and running back eclipsed the 100-yard mark in the same game.

OSU enjoyed marked edges in experience in both lines in that game a year ago.

"Every couple of years, you might catch a team when they have four new guys up front," said offensive tackle Kirk Barton. "The year before they gave it to us. They had four good senior defensive linemen, two of which are in the NFL now.

"This will be the rubber match. Both lines are seasoned and both lines are very good. We are anxious to get up to Kinnick. We have some bad memories to erase. We haven't forgotten the last time we were there. That was probably as low as we've been since Coach Tressel has been here. It's the worst game we've ever been a part of."

Defensive coordinator Jim Heacock said, last year's result aside, Tate can be a handful at quarterback.

"He's a great quarterback," Heacock said. "We know we are going to have our hands full. Two years ago over there, he played well against us. We know it will probably be our toughest challenge to date. We just have to prepare and get ready to go."

Rolling Right Along

Ohio State is a few first-place votes away from being a unanimous No. 1 in both the Associated Press media poll and USA Today coaches poll.

The Buckeyes have won their first four games by an average of nearly 23 points per game. OSU has ridden the strong play of its defense, which has allowed just three touchdowns in four games.

"They've answered (the challenges) through four games," Tressel said of his defense. "What I like about those guys is they have a passion to be good and good throughout. They've had four tests and passed them, some with better grades than others. I think they're getting better and it's a long football season when you have 12 games and I guess we've been through four of them.

"I've loved the way they've worked all the way back to the winter, spring practice. I liked what I saw of them in preseason, but then you have to go out and find out how you fare against others. And they've incrementally gotten better, and next week they face a veteran quarterback with an outstanding running back (Albert Young) and a good football team and that's the next test. But I have a lot of confidence in them."

The Buckeyes hope their experience of going on the road and winning a night game at then-No. 2 Texas – a 24-7 decision on Sept. 9 – will serve them well in this game. That win snapped a string of three straight road night game losses dating to 2002.

"That should help us out a lot," said wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. "Texas was very loud. I know Iowa will be even louder with two Big Ten schools playing. We're 1-1 against them the last two years. We know they will come out here and play hard."

In OSU's last two games, the Buckeyes have sputtered offensively in the first half. Last week, OSU trailed Cincinnati for much of the first half before rallying for a 37-7 win. On Saturday, OSU trailed Penn State 3-0 at halftime.

A similar slow start this Saturday could be lethal, though, if the Hawkeyes can jump on OSU early.

"I'm not concerned that we started slowly," Gonzalez said. "I am more concerned that we weren't playing well. Any time you get to come out here and show the things you've been working on all week and all year, you take pride in that and you want it to go perfectly. But today and last week, in the first half it just wasn't there."

The Penn State win – punctuated by three fourth-quarter touchdowns – was not the prettiest. Tressel said he was not worried about scoring style points with poll voters.

"I've never been accused of style," Tressel said. "No, I don't subscribe to the style points thing. I know when you get into your conference, there's nothing stylish about it. Those games are battles. And when you get against a game where you play that team every year, there is no rotation off the schedule and it's a battle every time you play them. You better not go out there with any thoughts of style points."

The Road Ahead

It is still a long way until Dec. 3, when the nation's top two teams in the BCS standings will be decided for the Jan. 8 national title game in Glendale, Ariz.

Here is a look at OSU's eight remaining games with thoughts on each after four weeks of the season:

* Sept. 30, at Iowa (4-0), 8 p.m. (ABC) -- The Hawkeyes survived a double overtime game at Syracuse without Drew Tate. Then, with Tate back in the fold, Iowa looked impressive in a home win over Iowa State and opened Big Ten play with a 24-7 win over Illinois. This will be just the second-ever night game at Kinnick Stadium. The Buckeyes have to hope they cured their woes in night games with their win Sept. 9 at Texas.

* Oct. 7, Bowling Green (2-2), 3:30 p.m. (ESPN-Plus) -- BG's season may be unraveling after the Falcons just lost to long suffering Kent State 38-3. OSU has not lost a game to a current MAC school since the late-1800s.

* Oct. 14, at Michigan State (3-1), time, TV TBA (likely 3:30 p.m. on ABC) -- MSU's season could also be headed for a tailspin after an unthinkable come-from-way-ahead loss to Notre Dame. If Drew Stanton can right the ship, MSU can still make some waves in the Big Ten. The Spartans open conference play next week at home against Illinois.

* Oct. 21, Indiana (2-2), time, TV TBA (likely noon on ESPN or ESPN2) -- Indiana's season is most definitely unraveling after losses to Division I-AA Southern Illinois and to Connecticut this past week. Top receiver James Hardy remains on the suspended list and coach Terry Hoeppner is recovering from recent brain surgery.

* Oct. 28, Minnesota (2-2), 3:30 p.m. (ABC, ESPN or ESPN2) -- The Gophers seem to be strong offensively with QB Bryan Cupito and RBs Amir Pinnix and Alex Daniels. But getting quality opponents stopped has been an issue. The Gophers dropped their Big Ten opener at Purdue 27-21.

* Nov. 4, at Illinois (1-3), time, TV TBA (likely noon on ESPN or ESPN2) --Nothing seems to have changed for Illinois, which has now lost 10 straight Big Ten games after dropping the conference opener to Iowa. The Illini have turned to freshman Isiah Williams at quarterback, it seems.

* Nov. 11, at Northwestern (2-2), time, TV TBA (likely noon on ESPN, with a slight chance of 3:30 p.m. on ABC) -- A rocky start in the first season under Pat Fitzgerald. It includes losses to I-AA New Hampshire and at Nevada this past weekend. The news doesn't get any better as the Wildcats visit Penn State for their Big Ten opener this Saturday.

* Nov. 18, Michigan (4-0), 3:30 p.m. (ABC) -- Michigan got back on the front page with its resounding 47-21 win at Notre Dame last week. UM then enjoyed a solid 27-13 win over Wisconsin in its Big Ten opener. WR Mario Manningham is developing into an unqualified star.

Michigan has risen to No. 6 in the polls. If the Wolverines can make it through a three-week stretch in October with games against Michigan State, at Penn State and home with Iowa, then the traditional season ender could be a match-up of two of the nation's top three or four teams – dare we say the first-ever one-versys-two match-up in The Game?
