Hi Duane, any updates on the weekend recruits to give us?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:51:09 AM)
Nothing that isn't already on the site except that Kyle Long may be coming in as a DL before being moved over to offense.
buckmark (Sep 25, 2006 9:51:14 AM)
07 OL recruits.. what's the latest on O'Dowd and Davis? Does Wetterer (sp?) get an offer?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:52:40 AM)
I have no confidence in O'Dowd. I have said from the begining that Davis could end up here because of Coker. Miami is on trouble and no longer on his list. I think the Buckeyes stand a great chance. I do not see Wetterer with a BUckeye offer.
ottobuck (Sep 25, 2006 9:52:48 AM)
Do you see Iowa loosing focus because of the hype and coverage! OSU's been there done that this year!
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:54:09 AM)
No way. Iowa will be ready to play. If the pass rush with just the front 4 continues to be as effective as it has been I think the Buckeyes will be fine. Tate moves well but is no Troy Smith with the ball tucked. He needs to throw it.
JimC (Sep 25, 2006 9:54:12 AM)
Hi Duane, Any news on the field? Have they ripped it up and ready for the new sod? I thought the field looked ok on TV.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:54:53 AM)
I think the new is already down. I am not worried about it.
buckmark (Sep 25, 2006 9:54:59 AM)
'08 OL recruiting. There are certainly alo of positive signs for a stellar class. What are your early thoughts about the 4-5 we keep hearing about.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:55:45 AM)
I think the Buckeyes land Adams and Brewster. I feel confident that Long joins them if he doesn
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:56:04 AM)
't go baseball. Shugarts is very much in the mix.
fairbornlawyer (Sep 25, 2006 9:56:10 AM)
I am not one of the fans who complains about every Ohio player on Michigan's roster, but how good would Manningham look on this OSU squad?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:56:54 AM)
I don't know if Sanders gets an offer unless one of the other 4 say no.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:57:57 AM)
Manningham would look great in a Buckeye uniform. He is the big wide receiver that makes room for the flankers like Ginn and Gonzo. They would have even more room to operate if Manningham were here. They would be even better.
DoctorSJ (Sep 25, 2006 9:58:10 AM)
Duane - how about a prediction - game score for Saturday and next 5 recruits?????
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 9:59:16 AM)
I see the Buckeyes winning 28-17. No predictions on who is coming on board. I stopped doing that long ago.
mckbuckeye (Sep 25, 2006 9:59:25 AM)
Duane - saw some of the recruits walking around at the game. There were some BIG boys there! Any news on commits?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:00:37 AM)
Nobosy committed. Not yet. Most were in the class of '08. What few OLs are being recruited for the class of '07 would probably drop the Buckeyes.
labuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:00:49 AM)
Duane, which kids from Glenville do you think we offer for next year and what are the chances of all three Mooney kids getting offers and coming?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:03:24 AM)
I have not see a clear cut sure offer for a Glenville kid next year. Rowell can be a dominating player but he is just way overweight. I mean 50 lbs or so. I think Beachum would be odds on with an offer. The Buckeyes could be in a good position with both Zordich and McCarthy. I think there is too much being put into the family ties based on what I hear. The draw of Ohio State as the program stands right now and the aura surrounding Jim Tressel is a huge draw.
labuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:03:31 AM)
Can you compare Darius Ashley to anyone else at this point? Does he remind you of any former Buckeyes or Ohio recruits of the past?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:04:30 AM)
Ashley is not a Buckeye caliber back so comparing him to anyone that caem here would be hard. He is a small back. I would be surprised if he gets offers outside the MAC.
buckeye030 (Sep 25, 2006 10:04:38 AM)
Seems like we are in on not only more, but also higher 'rated' Florida players this year. Does it just seem that way or is the staff making a more cocerted effort down there?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:06:05 AM)
I think it has more to do with the high profile of the prgram than anything the staff is doing. Here we have such a focus on Ohio State. That was not always the case. Now Ohio State is back as a program of first choice like in the times of Woody Hayes.
acesaces (Sep 25, 2006 10:06:11 AM)
Hi Duane It's time to put a name on the D, mine would be ' THE NASTY BOYS ' they baited the QB to throw their way. :-)
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:07:25 AM)
I think top defenses here will always be the Silver Bullets and get no name until they rate the title Silver Bullets.
avluey (Sep 25, 2006 10:07:36 AM)
Do you like the rotation of the LB's or would you like to see three of them get the majority of the plays?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:09:10 AM)
Good question. I would say continue the rotation until someone nails a spot down. We are not seeing consistently good play out of any LB but Laurinaitis. You will notice he is not being subbed for much.
buckmark (Sep 25, 2006 10:09:16 AM)
It looks like Tress' recruiting plan is working well in the long term. Do you still get concerned over the number of offers and visits being lower than others?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:09:22 AM)
After 2 others take the jobs I say give them most of the reps.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:12:04 AM)
I still think it is high risk. As long as they are nailing the higher percentage of recruits they are targeting it is the best strategy. One thing that has changed the dynamic in my mind is last year coming in late and nailing some nice 3-star type players late in Gant and Chekwa. I think the strategy is that they can find 3-star players in January. NO need to spend time on thme throughout the year.
JimC (Sep 25, 2006 10:12:10 AM)
Do you think Malcom Jenkins crossed the goal line before he spiked it?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:12:58 AM)
The is no way he was across the goal line. No way.
manhattanbuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:13:07 AM)
Hey Duane, seems like we gave up on any deep plays to Ginn/Gonzo after first interception. Was this rain, the PSU dbacks physically taking recievers out of our routes, or did TG2 just disappear? Are you concerned about our passing game adjustments against Iowa as a result?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:15:46 AM)
I have spoken to several people at the game in the last couple of days. They saw my tape of the game. They all said you could not come close to understanding the conditions based on the tv broadcast. I also think we need to get more of the playbook out there. I saw UC and PSU sitting on alot of what we want to do.
fairbornlawyer (Sep 25, 2006 10:16:02 AM)
I got disconnected, so I am sorry if this was already asked. I saw a Mich State team that was tons more talented than Notre Dame. Did you see it the same way? I think the Bucks will have a true test against the Spartans. I hope OSU doesn't have to rely on a meltdown by MSU to win.
manhattanbuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:18:22 AM)
Got here late so I hope this has not been already asked. Drew Tate is the first experienced elite quarterback our young defense has faced. I know what a great job our new D has done in many areas(scoring, turnovers, sacks, etc) But we have yet to face a team with a top running AND passing attack. Great Defenses like LSU and good ones like OSU and Florida have not been able to stop Tate when he gets hot. Can and how do we stop him?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:20:49 AM)
I think the pass rush has been the key to this teams success. It is going to be hard to keep them out of Tates grill. If Iowa can find a way to do that it is going to be a tough game.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:20:52 AM)
I am very concerned about MSU. I think that will be the best offense the Buckeyes will see. I think their defense is no better than it has been any year that Smith has been there, and while he is an offensive genius he can come up with some questionable calls and does not seem to be able to get his team over the hump in big games. That could be the one that the offense really needs to step up and win the game for the Buckeyes. The defense is allowing 8 points a game. Despite all the hype about the offense, the defense keeps winning games for this team.

How early some of the '08 OLineman publicly commit?

RoyalFlush47 asks "How early do some of the '08 OLinemen publicly commit?"
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:24:56 AM)
I have spoken to Brewster any number of times. He has consistently said not until next spring or early summer. Long is waiting on the baseball draft. I suspect Adams has been told not to say anything until then. There is still a class in progress. Davis and O'Dowd are big time players. They still want to stay in the mix with those kids in this class. I would suggest to fans to leave it alone. Don't get worked up about it. We here at Bucknuts have great ins with 3 of these kids. Everything is fine. Don't worry about public verbals. It is NOT about them having reservations.

If Jenkins was not across the goal line, do you think the ball was? After watching the replays, I think it might have been...
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:25:53 AM)
Neither the ball nor Jenkins were over the line. Terrible decision on his part.
BisonMarty (Sep 25, 2006 10:25:59 AM)
How does the Iowa OL match up with our DL this saturday? Will we be able to get pressure with 4?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:27:18 AM)
I have not watched Iowa enough to say. I think this defensive line can give anyone fits. I have not heard anyone say Iowas offensive line was anything special.

What is going to happen with Morgan Williams from McKinnley, Brian Gamble from Massilon, and Hubbard from St. Eds? I remember hearing so much about them last year. Have they been overshadowed by others or were they slightly overhyped last year? Where do you think they end up?
Kirk (Sep 25, 2006 10:28:15 AM)

Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:30:02 AM)
With Williams and Gamble is it about grades. They end up somewhere like Akron that is very aggressive with these borderline students in hopes that they get it together. They end up with Ohio State caliber players. Hubbard was never really a Buckeye target. I think they saw him as a tweener.
ottobuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:30:14 AM)
I think there might be Idiots Out Wondering Around Kinick stadium and being a night game , the loudest test yet. Louder than PSU last year?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:31:51 AM)
I don't know if it is big enough to have as many fans but you can bet they try and get that loud. Taking them out of the game early would level the playing field right off the bat.
ryder12 (Sep 25, 2006 10:32:02 AM)
Who, if any from in state (Martin excluded) do you see getting offers for 2007?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:33:20 AM)
I think outside of Jeremiah the instate offers for '07 are done.
buckmark (Sep 25, 2006 10:33:27 AM)
Any word about shake-ups in the coaching staff? Daniels doing ok? Bollman? Anyone possibly moving on?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:34:53 AM)
Too early for that. I always think Hazel and Beckman are really year to year. Someone will offer them a coordinators job. It is just as matter of time.

Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:38:02 AM)
I am very concerned that we are becoming a bit predictable. I saw too much of Troy holding the ball when in the past it had been gone. I think the LB corps must get at least one more guy to step up. I say one more because the Buckeyes have been in nickle alot. The third thing is the front four must continue to win the battles up front.
ottobuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:38:08 AM)
28-17, So is it balance,2 rushing TD's 2 Passing TD's or really balanced, 1 rushing 1 passing 1 special teams and 1 on defense?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:39:03 AM)
I have not thought it through to that degree.
manhattanbuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:39:09 AM)
The thing about the offense that has most surprised me up until the Penn St. game has been the offensive creativity. The way we have mixed the spread passing/option and running with the power seems to keep defenses on their heels and wears them down for therun as the game progresses. Are you scared we are reverting to the predictable 2004 offense that even Northwestern beat and said was the worst in the big ten, was weather a factor in being very conservative, or did PSU steal our signals?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:41:56 AM)
I think we are seeing teams pick up that no matter what formations we are still running the same plays. That is what I think is going on. I wish I could remember the play but there was one formation I have not seen before and only saw it once on Saturday and I could see the reaction in the Penn State defense. The pass was dropped. I think by Gonzo but it had big play written all over it. We need more variety.

Nothing. I think that ship has sailed. He would not take an offer as an LB and the staff is moving on.
fairbornlawyer (Sep 25, 2006 10:43:04 AM)
Duane, on your comment about predictability, I think that has been a Penn State game trademark under Tressel. I do not know why, but the OSU vs. PSU games seem to be marked by that. I was really pleased to see the Bucks win. Have you noticed the same - a more bland game against PSU than the others on the schedule?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:46:08 AM)
Both are just old school guys. When they match-up against each other their styles show up all the more than whenplaying other teams.
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:46:14 AM)
I have noticed it. Why it happens, I cannot explain. The only thing that makes sense is they are both run oriented teams that keep the mistakes to a minimum. The team that does those 2 things the best is going to win.
Kirk (Sep 25, 2006 10:47:00 AM)
Ok we'll have two more questions today...
buckmark (Sep 25, 2006 10:47:09 AM)
It seems that Tress and staff are targeting quite a few more OOS and higher level recruits. Is the main reason because there are less worthy in state kids or because it is the Buckeyes have climbed back into a better position nationally speaking?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:48:40 AM)
I would say it is two things. One you mentioned. The program has become so high profile doors are opening all over the country. The other is grades. Gamble, Williams and Dewey Elliott would be offered players here in Ohio with better grades.
manhattanbuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:48:42 AM)
Seems like JT does a great job landing a high percentage of kids who fit character of the team, roles needed by each position, and fitting these players into sucessfull shemes( especially defense). Because JT never takes over 18 players we will never have a top five class. However, discounting total numbers, how would you rank the 07 class in terms of positions needed, ideal recruit landed and overall quality compared with a USC Florida or any other "top five" school? Is there anything we can be doing better in terms of increasing the overall quality /rank of our recruiting classes in 08 and the future?
Duane (Sep 25, 2006 10:55:21 AM)
I have not looked at anyones elses commit list. I think it is too early, and I just don't have the time that you fans have to pay attention to what other schools are doing. At least this early. I will never like the number of OLs that Jim Bollman likes to work with. I think it is a position where so many kids do not pan out so you need numbers. That is the only real need and I could see the Buckeyes just getting one this year. Other than that it is taking the best athlete available and I really like what they Buckeyes have done. Evege and Torrrence are big time. Clifford is as good a DB as we have seen in Ohio since MIke Doss. Saine is one of the 3 must have recruits in the state this year but Herron may be a better purte back. I am not as high on Blankenship, Sanzenbacher and Washington as some are but they are not reaches. Nice class. Real nice class especially if they can add Martin, Thomas and one of the DTs, Brent, Barksdale or Jermeiah.
manhattanbuck (Sep 25, 2006 10:56:57 AM)
Thanks Duane. Go Bucks!
