Offensive line is an area that a lot of Ohio State fans feel should be an emphasis in this year's recruiting class. With a lack of depth and overall experience at key positions, there is a concern about the state of the offensive line. That concern grows greater once you consider that Ohio State has not yet offered any offensive lineman from the state of Ohio this year. Therefore, we have been looking out-of-state for offensive linemen who might be interested in the Buckeyes, and we have found one in North Carolina (for another few days anway) blue-chipper Tripp Carroll.
Tripp is a big (6-4, 292, 5.1) and strong (near 400 lb bench) offensive line prospect who is currently rated as the #6 overall OL in America by TheInsiders.com. Tripp currently has dozens of scholarship offers, and one of those is from Ohio State. And, as luck would have it, the Buckeyes are one of his top schools.
Tripp has other things on his mind right now though as he is going to be making a move at the end of the week. He is transferring from Myers Park High in Charlotte, NC to Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL to play his senior season for his father, who coaches at Jackson High.
Tripp is not going to be staying too long in Florida though as he plans to come back to the state of North Carolina to get an early start on his education. After the season, Tripp says "I will then come back home to enroll in a community college to get a leg up so I can enroll in college spring quarter."
As it turns out, Tripp is a very serious student. He has marks that are tough to match as he has a 4.5 GPA and a 1200 score on the SAT. To Tripp, academics are what college will be all about.
"I love football but academics is what I am mostly interested in," he said. "I want to major in medicine and maybe chemistry or biology, but business is a possibility too."
Where will Tripp look to further his education? Right now, four schools are high on his list, with one school that is in better shape than the rest. "Virginia Tech, Ohio State, Clemson and North Carolina are my leaders," he said. "Virginia Tech is my clear leader. I like everything about it; the coaching staff, the facilities -- all are top notch."
Ohio State is still in the thick of things though as Tripp told us he was going to set up an official visit to Ohio State. No word yet on when that will be ("I want to set up my visits during the season," he said).
We will definitely be following this player throughout the recruiting season. Any blue-chip offensive lineman who wants to visit Ohio State is definitely one to keep an eye on!
