Hi Jon, is it too soon to know who will be sitting out (ie, injuries)?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:48:17 AM)
Sort of. I know Kannellis is out, as is moylan, both backup defensive players. I would say that starting center Eubanks and starting LT Richardsonwill be out, too
hondo (Sep 27, 2006 9:48:20 AM)
Jon, do you think Ohio State's front four are athletic enough to run down Tate? He made them look terrible in '04 and last year they sent a lot of LBs after him.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:48:29 AM)
Elgin started at center in 2004,so there is experience there.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:48:59 AM)
Yes, they can run down tate, but Tate is elusive, as you know, so you can't give up on a play
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:49:25 AM)
He is at his best out of the pocket, playing some street ball
mckbuckeye (Sep 27, 2006 9:49:31 AM)
Jon - Nice OSU flag by your name on the chat! I assume you are converting! But seriously, do you think Iowa is as good at Texas (meaning they will give us a better game). I saw the Syracuse game - can Tate make that big of a difference?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:50:29 AM)
I think at Kinnick Stadium, given the situation, thenight game, thehype and thecrowd, that Iowa's 12th man is more of a factorthan it was at Texas. Man for man, Texas is better. But man for man, Iowa didnt belong on the field with you in 2004.
BuckeyeBill (Sep 27, 2006 9:50:34 AM)
How do you see Iowa's 2006 offense vs last years going into the OSU game, differences etc..?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:50:42 AM)
It's going to be oneof those games that I think Tate was made for. We shall see. So many injury questions are a concern for practice, however
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:51:23 AM)
Your defense is not as good as it was last year, and Iowa will use RB albert young inthe slot a lot. I think yousee Iowa open things up more on offense, just some three andfour wide formations, morethan they like to
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:51:49 AM)
Yes, tate can be that big ofa diference. If that Cuse gamewas home, Jake Christensen would have played. He is better than Manson. You will see him inthree years
Buckguy108 (Sep 27, 2006 9:51:57 AM)
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:52:13 AM)
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 9:52:17 AM)
Jon addressed this ...
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 9:52:55 AM)
Kanellis and Moylan, backups on defense will be out, as well as center Eubanks and LT Richardson on offense.
Buckguy108 (Sep 27, 2006 9:53:01 AM)
Sorry I guess I am a little late. What is the word on Derrel Johnson?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:53:33 AM)
Euabnks and RIchrdson might still go,but they did not practie yesterday. Its not forsure, but I am not optimistic
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:53:50 AM)
THey getJones back thisweek who was suspended last week. So they will have four players that have started games
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:54:36 AM)
DJK as we like to call him, he hurt his foot in camp. Not season ending, but with the learning curve atWR, and theemergence of true frosh Dominique Douglas, a redshirt will do him well
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:55:20 AM)
Heard that DJK loves contact and was bowling over DB's.
ottobuck (Sep 27, 2006 9:55:26 AM)
How will Iowa attact the OSU offense? Pressure or more drop back and contain?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:56:49 AM)
That is the scary thing. Iowa has played against spreads now two weeks in a row, so thtais good. ISU QB Bret Meyer is likea young TS. But no one is TS live andnow. I expect OSU to lookto establish the running game with he and Pittman, like they did last year getting more than 300 yards in the first half. One thing that terrifies me, is Iowa's LB get linedup over slot receivers at somepoint in each game. It haskilled them
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 9:57:05 AM)
Jon, I want to ask about the defensive front ...
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 9:57:14 AM)
They were outsized and inexperienced last year ...
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 9:58:00 AM)
In typing in the depth chart, I noticed each guy had gained 15-20 pounds. I see Iowa has 12 sacks. Has this been a product of the DL (or blitzes) and/or a product of who they have played (i.e. Montana, Syracuse and Illinois)?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:59:14 AM)
Yes they were. They are bigger and older this year. The last 6 reg.season games last year, Iowa gave up less than 100 rushing yards per game. They have not looked dominant this year against the run because teams are spreading them out, and putting the numbers intheir favor. It Pittman is a good blocker, that is trouble for Iowa. Probably partlyt due to opponents, but they are faster and better. Again, the spread is the way to run the ball in today's era of college football. You spread out the box, take the strong side back outsidethree more yards, which is 10 feet, and the safety can't walk into the box.
buckgrad (Sep 27, 2006 9:59:39 AM)
Watching your offense, do you notice that the loss of the 2 wrs has had a major impact(forgot their names Hinkel Soloman maybe?), Tate hasnt looked the same without those guys. Which wr has stepped up as his go to guy?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 9:59:48 AM)
meant to say strong side backer
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:01:16 AM)
Tate has not practiced on Tuesday and Wed of any week thisyear. Maybe 7 full practices since 8/18. The loss of those WR means that DB's are playing press coverage againstthem, man on man. Iowa will have to exploit that this week and beyond to help out the running game, because every team Iowa hasplayed so far is stuffing the box with 8 or 9 players. I dont think OSU has to do that, but I expect you to blitz and stunt
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:02:37 AM)
What is it about Iowa and Kinnick Stadium that is special? What should people be looking for on Sat.?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:04:16 AM)
RE: Kinnick: The sideline is just 10 yards from the front row. And the stands are vertical, not the slow rise that is the big house. You feel like they are right on top of you. The benches that OSU will use, the fans canreach out and touch you if they were that stupid. Plus, Iowa fans take great pride in making that place a zoo. IF you read Herbstreigt's comments this week, he even says that OSU fans better not think that Texas was the tougheset road game/environment. Iowa will have that. They will need moret han that, but they have that.
ottobuck (Sep 27, 2006 10:04:35 AM)
Being a Big game and in the spotlight , did you give tOSU's locker room a fresh coat of pink paint? How many people does Kinick hold? Are the renovations done?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:05:03 AM)
I thinkthe pink locker room thingis overblown now, that the new locker rooms are there for visitors. The new locker rooms for the visitors are nicer than most of their home locker rooms from the space and modernization aspect. They were new last year
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:05:24 AM)
Kinnick holds 70585. Renovations complete
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:05:26 AM)
If it hasn't been touched on yet, will OSU be able to get heat on Iowa's QB? How good is the Iowa O-line?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:05:29 AM)
It's a beautiful place; a blend of old and new. Seamless. They did a great job
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:06:08 AM)
Iowa's pass blocking has been excellent to date. But OSU is OSU, they will have their shots. But they have to be clean shots, or Tate can get away.
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:06:42 AM)
Again, if not addressed yet, how is the health of Tate? 100%?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:07:16 AM)
No, tate is not 100 percent and I dont expect him to be that way all year
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:07:19 AM)
the oblique, you need to shut it down for fourweeks.
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:07:23 AM)
Can Iowa run the ball this year? I don't see it on OSU's defense, do you?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:08:58 AM)
Yes, they can. But they have chosen to use their two tight end, two WR sets to run. That lets teams cheat and walk the safety down to the box, keep all the backers in there, becauyse Iowa's WR's have not proven to be deep game breaking threats. They need to run the ball out of spread formations...or even simple three wr sets with a slot wr....that at least makes the box 7, not 8. They have three very good backs. Expect a lot of screens and swings
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:09:42 AM)
What can we expect the Iowa defense do to slow down Ginn? Double-team?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:09:50 AM)
#28 SIms and #23 Greene are game breaking home run threats running the ball. #21 Young is a mail carrier, still very good.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:10:37 AM)
I dont think you see them double team Ginn. They might roll a safety here and there, but you can't be so stupid to double Ginn and leave Gonzales one on one. Iowa plays a base 4-3 cover two zone most of thetime, rarely one on one anyone. Iowa's safeties have been sensational this year in coverage and they are big hitters
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:10:48 AM)
What qualities has KF brought to the program which Coach Fry did not?
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:11:15 AM)
Nobody is getting boogered up any more (ha ha ... that was a Hayden favorite saying).
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:11:27 AM)
KF is more conservative, but were it not for Hayden, there wouldn't be a Kirk. Hyaden would take more risks in games, Kirk is not like that
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:11:55 AM)
To borrow another Fry saying, Iowa will have to scratch it where it itches this week
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:12:23 AM)
You know, Hayden Fry coached SMU against Ohio State in the 1968 season opener. They threw like a record 60 passes ... and lost 35-14 as the Buckeyes were on their way to the national title.
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:12:39 AM)
What is the mood of the Iowa team in practice this week? This really is their first big game of the year, are they amped like OSU was for Texas?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:12:54 AM)
When you throw more than 40 times in a games, there is usually a reason, and thatis because you are losing :)
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:13:05 AM)
It's big, but Iowa State boat raced them last year. That was big payback for them.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:13:46 AM)
The Iowa State game is a big game forIowa, so they have one of those under their belts. Dont knowtheir mood, because we see them yesterday, then not again til on the field. But its one of the biggest games in Kinnick's history, and likelthe biggest regular season game of their lives
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:13:55 AM)
That says it all.
hammbone1928 (Sep 27, 2006 10:14:00 AM)
DT King is yout leading sacker with DE Iwenbema is 2nd will he play over the LT?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:14:34 AM)
Iwebema plays right side end. They usually dont rotate.
hammbone1928 (Sep 27, 2006 10:14:48 AM)
You had a great rec. 2 yrs ago particularly in Ill. Was Richardson 4 or 5*?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:15:00 AM)
so yes, that puts him over LT. I had not thought about that :)
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:15:27 AM)
Richardson was a US Army AA. Played as true frosh last year, has started this year. He has a waysto go, but isservicable and athletic
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:15:40 AM)
Does Iowa punt the ball to Ginn?
mckbuckeye (Sep 27, 2006 10:15:44 AM)
Jon - How are Iowa's special teams? Do they kick to Ginn? Good kicker and punter?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:16:00 AM)
Yes, I think they do. But Hang time iswhat they have with their punter.
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:16:34 AM)
Michigan used to always kill the Bucks with screens and draws. Since Tressel arrived, that area of the defense is greatly improved, in fact has become a strength. Do you think the Hawkeyes will try those plays because it is their strength, or because they think it is a Buckeye weakness?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:16:44 AM)
Kickoffs, they are getting touchbacks more than half the time. a walk on kicker. specialist PK Schlicher is the best in the Big Ten, IMO. Have not blocked a punt yet this year, so that unit has a waysto go, and Iowa's KOR team has not done well for two years...worst in nation last year
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:17:26 AM)
I think they run those plays if the defense is giving it to them. Those plays work well against aggressive defenses. But your backers are smart and well coached, so its tough to beat them on the flat...you have to have perfect blocking
buckgrad (Sep 27, 2006 10:17:55 AM)
Jon, curious to hear an outsiders opinion of OSU fans, at the game and Bucknuts suscribers.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:19:00 AM)
I love your subscriber board. my favorite in the big ten. I dont go to your free boards, or mine forthat matter :) You guys have treated me great, and Helwagen is a great guy, so I have stockholm syndrome
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:19:27 AM)
Yeah, you're like Patty Hearst (ha ha .. sympathizing with the enemy ... ha ha).
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:19:32 AM)
Do we have word yet on the weather at kick-off?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:19:50 AM)
Looks like 60 degrees and good skies
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:19:52 AM)
Score predictions? Steve you too, please.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:20:35 AM)
I will publicly say 27-24 Iowa, admitting its homerish. I did that so Iowa was down by four on theirlast drive, so ferentz doesnt playfor the FG and OT likethey did last year at home against Michigan :)
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:20:40 AM)
I think in a moment of sheer lunacy I said 31-17 Ohio State. ...
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:20:53 AM)
Then people said I was crazy for giving Iowa 17. After all,
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:21:10 AM)
OSU has only allowed 3 touchdowns in 4 games.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:21:14 AM)
If I bet on gamesand had to bet this one, Iwould take OSU
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:21:20 AM)
If you were responsible for attacking the OSU defense with Iowa's offense how would you draw it up?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:21:47 AM)
I think the film Iowa watched vs PSU and you guys probably gave them somemore hope
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:22:20 AM)
I would be with a pro set, slot back too, much of thegame. Makethe box lesscrowded. Iwould have Young inthe slot a lot, and have Sims and Greene carry the ball that day. Then, getdown on a knee
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:22:31 AM)
Ha ha. That's how you always want to end it.
hammbone1928 (Sep 27, 2006 10:22:36 AM)
Would you say that basically you are a young team I noticed that of the top 44 15 soph 6 rsf & 1 true frsh & 11 jr's?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:22:53 AM)
I would let Tate win it or lose it. You dont run the princeton offense with Michael Jordan, I have been saying this week. Let Tate deal
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:23:19 AM)
The defense is very young. Will lose three starters next year. The offense will lose Tate, three starting OL, but that's it
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:23:38 AM)
and TE chandler, but Moeaki is better
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:23:40 AM)
Good position to be in. If they find a QB, they could be a BCS team next year.
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:23:52 AM)
Heck, might be this year if they win Sat.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:24:09 AM)
They have a QB in Christensen. HE is a deep ball threat. Smart kid...sort of steve youngish...and no OSU or Michigan fortwo years
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:24:12 AM)
If they win on Sat, 11-1 is very realistic
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:24:21 AM)
Are the Buckeyes going appeciate playing on a good field for a change this week?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:24:42 AM)
The field has never been better. we did the same thing last year that you are doingright now...same sod fields, too
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:24:56 AM)
But I hear that Iowa's lawnmowers are broken. So look for the grass to be longer
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:03 AM)
Ha ha, that's an old trick.
hondo (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:07 AM)
Jon, I know Ohio State was recruiting Kyle Williams a few years ago and he signed with Iowa. What happened to him?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:32 AM)
Thankfully, he left Iowa for Purdue. He was a bad seed, it turned out
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:36 AM)
hammbone1928 (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:39 AM)
Def. Line has 2 jr 2 soph back ups 4 soph. That is one of reasons I say it is a young teamhy would
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:44 AM)
He is not playing anywhere now...got into major trouble at purdue
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:25:50 AM)
Double uh oh.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:26:16 AM)
Iowa's DL in 2007 will be lights out. Should be later this year, too
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:26:21 AM)
Iowa's LB's not the drop off that some people think.
hammbone1928 (Sep 27, 2006 10:26:29 AM)
Why would you rate Moeki better when Chandler is your leading rec.?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:27:13 AM)
Moeaki is a lot like Dallas Claark. Moe is a great blocker, too, so he is used as H. When he runs the routes that Chandler gets to run, he will be sensational. He has two TD catches over the past two games now. Tate is finally starting to look for him
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:27:20 AM)
He can run like a deer and has great hands
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:27:27 AM)
Sounds like a great combination.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:27:48 AM)
Yes, and Brandon Meyers comes in next year, too and he is real good. Two deers in the lineup at TE for Iowa
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:27:58 AM)
I want to ask about Albert Young, 209 pounds, I figured he'd be an every down back. But Sims is taking some plays from him. What up there?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:28:23 AM)
If Moe stays healtthy, he is probably a 2nd or 3rd rounde pick
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:29:06 AM)
Iowa has three backs that could start for most B10 teams. AY has gotten 19,18,11,18 carries in the four games. Each is different. Sims is alegit Fred Russell-like home run threat. He has to touchthe ball. Which is why I expect to see Albert more inthe slot. Iowa has already run more screens and swings this yera than thelast three yeras combined...seriously
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:29:36 AM)
This is a personal question for my benefit ...
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:30:14 AM)
Coming in Sat. morning. Where is a good place, close to the stadium (within 2-3 miles) to eat and watch day games. Got a couple suggestions?
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:30:31 AM)
I'm sure others coming from Ohio and elsewhere will appreciate the info as well.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:30:42 AM)
The Wig and Pen, or the Vine. Down on route 6, behind carver hawkeye arena.
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:31:17 AM)
I want to get to the stadium early to avoid traffic, crowd, but I figured up until 3:30 or so we could watch games.
chuangtsu (Sep 27, 2006 10:31:26 AM)
How many Buckeye fans are we expecting at the game?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:32:03 AM)
I bet probably 4 or 5 k buckeye fans
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:32:14 AM)
Buit this game has been a sellout since the summer
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:32:24 AM)
and it never wentto the general public
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:32:44 AM)
I'd say at least. They probably get 4,000-5,000 from Iowa per contract/Big Ten rule and I bet another 2,000 at least will be there.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:32:49 AM)
iowa has like 57k seats soldout to season tix holders.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:33:01 AM)
Didnt you guys sell some on your website last week?
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:33:15 AM)
No, we didn't. Maybe OSU did on the official site, whatever was left over.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:33:18 AM)
I know that Iowa fans were calling in and buying some. So your allotment must not have been sold out
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:33:22 AM)
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:33:28 AM)
Doesn't it seem ridiculous Iowa won't play Michigan or Ohio State for two years? The Big Ten needs to boot somebody out and then play a full round robin like the Pac-10 is.
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:34:51 AM)
That is quite an anomaly. That should never happen. They should use a formula based on how many titles per years been in the league.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:34:55 AM)
You can play a 10 game round robin. but some say B10 to play 9 league games. you can't do tht with 11 teams
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:34:59 AM)
9 times 11 is 99...divide that by two...doesnt work
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:35:04 AM)
No big ten team playsfor national title if they play true round robin
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:35:42 AM)
Agreed, the SEC eats their young with their scheduling. Florida plays the best 3 SEC West teams in a row -- Alabama, Auburn and LSU -- coming off Tenn. and then Georgia after those 3.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:35:47 AM)
thats also why I am calling for 2008 Iowa to playfor the title :)(
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:36:29 AM)
Ha ha. Perfect timing.
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:36:55 AM)
Last question for Jon, who has another obligation ...
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:36:57 AM)
Jon, were you at the game in Columbus when the Hawks came in as #1?
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:37:42 AM)
Nope. But it was a sloppy day, crap weather, and you guys kicked it to us. It was the week after iowa beat Michigan Ithink.
JonDMiller (Sep 27, 2006 10:37:45 AM)
Guys, its been fun....hope its a healthy and well playedgame......take care!
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:37:56 AM)
Hey, Jon, take care and thanks for stopping by!!!!!
SteveHelwagen (Sep 27, 2006 10:38:11 AM)

Great chat Steve and Jon!
edbuck51 (Sep 27, 2006 10:38:20 AM)
There's too many teams in the SEC. These super conferences with the made for TV championship games are mucking up the works. If all the conferences were ten teams, you could easily play everyone in conference and then three non-league. I don't like the designated hitter or the Nascar chase for the cup either.
