Housteau Chat Archive: Sept. 28

Bucknuts staffer Gary Housteau stopped by Thursday evening to chat with premium subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:49:03 PM)
Good evening to everyone on board. I was almost late from reading that monster of a story on Brian Robiskie on the front page of Bucknuts. But I'm excited about chatting in the evening time frame so let's see how things work out.

TampaBuck (Sep 28, 2006 4:52:16 PM)
Your thoughts on Brandon Saine as a college RB? He looks stiff with no lateral movement or elusiveness to me. Reminds me of Mo Hall with more size and speed. Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:52:16 PM)
Hi TampaBuck...I had the privilege of watching Saine play Xenia in week 2 and I was certainly impressed with a lot of things. I think he's definitely a running back but he still has some areas that he needs to develop to become even better. He's got great speed, that's obvious, and that makes up for any weaknesses he may have. I'm not sure he's as natural of a runner as some of the other really good running backs I've seen over the years but his speed makes up for any deficiencies he might have. He's pretty good though!

brutustheoes (Sep 28, 2006 4:53:59 PM)
Sorry another Injury question. Has Drew Tate been practicing this week? I know he will play.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:53:59 PM)
Hi brutustheoes I belive Jon Miller said that he hasn't practiced a whole lot period with an oblique injury and I don't think it was likely to change much this week. But yes he will certainly play. And that's how it should be.

ohs (Sep 28, 2006 4:54:38 PM)
What's the biggest worry for us Saturday?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:54:38 PM)
Overcoming the adverse road environment is the only worry really because Ohio State is the better football team period.

BuckeyeBill (Sep 28, 2006 4:56:51 PM)
Gary, Hoe will the OSU OL do against the DL of Iowa?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:56:51 PM)
Hi BuckeyeBill...good to see you on board. We all should expect the OL and the running game to be very productive this week against the DL and the entire Iowa defense. Pittman needs to have 150 yards minimum and we should expect that in this game. Take the home crowd out of the game with ball control, field position and win the turnover ratio. It's Tressel Ball 101!

thegreatcornholio (Sep 28, 2006 4:58:39 PM)
Hi Gary, what's the latest on the recruiting front? Any juicy updates you care to share?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 4:58:39 PM)
I talked to a lot of people at the game on Saturday, for whatever that's worth, and I came away pleasantly surprised by a lot of my findings. I'll just leave it at that.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:00:05 PM)
I will say this. I talked to Jermale Hines later in the week for an update which I hope to finish soon and you can be sure if an OSU offer comes his way, that he will be a Buckeye. Hines is a really good player and he's almost a lock to keep the Glenville pipeline going.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:00:17 PM)
Barksdale was at the game!

manhattanbuck (Sep 28, 2006 5:04:32 PM)
Hey Gary, I was hoping you were right and I was "out of my mind" to worry about Penn ST. Unfortanately, they were Penn St. ... fundementally sound on D. physical and well coached. Well at least the score did not look close... Now we have to worry about facing a GOOD qb with senior leadership and experience.. I sure hope the offense decides to show up for this game like they did the first two games of the season... Otherwise I feel we will lose this game. Thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:04:32 PM)
C'mon manhattanbuck you're killing me. In the preseason issue of Bucknuts the magazine, with Pittman on the cover, I profoundly stated among my other predictions that I would be the game that wouldn't be as close as people think...and I'm standing by that now. Folks this is a special year for Ohio State. Sure Iowa will be a difficult environment to play in but OSU is the better team nearly across the board. Take it for what it's worth. Bucks win 28-13 and that's only because I've bought into the home field trap at Kinnick Stadium. And BTW, if you didn't think OSU was the much better team last week, despite the score, you are sadly mistaken.

ohs (Sep 28, 2006 5:09:14 PM)
I'm excited for our defense next year. Also, which of the 08 OLs do we get?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:09:14 PM)
Hi ohs, I think I missed my greeting to you on your last question, my bad. I also said in that same prediction story that the biggest surprise at the end of the season would be how good the young defense will play this season. Sure they'll miss Pitcock and Patterson next year but the defense will be as good as it's ever been next year. I'm very excited about the future on that side of the ball. There are so many LB's in that 08 class that it's ridiculous...Staples and Beachum are right there at the very top. There's Zordich, Craig and Schneider from St. X, Williams from Miami Trace and many others in that group. The good thing is Staples and Beachum are big Buckeye guys.

TampaBuck (Sep 28, 2006 5:12:53 PM)
What's wrong with the Harding program the last few years? The talent level has dropped off and they have fallen off the map. Any explanation?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:12:53 PM)
Tampa I'm not really sure about the state of the Harding program right now. I'll be going to their game against Ursuline at YSU tomorrow night. My good friend Mark Porter from ScoutingOhio.com and myself will both be attending that game and the Youngstown Rayen game on Saturday...it's the very last game will ever be played at that history filled stadium. There hasn't been a game there in years and they're playing a game there for the last time on Saturday to honor all the history of the stadium and the players still alive who've ever played there.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:14:02 PM)
Barring a downpour, I'll be there at Rayen on Saturday to cover that ball game and I'll send some photos over to J.J. Huddle for anyone who might be interested. Plus Sal Battles and Gary Thornton will be on display for The Rayen School.

thegreatcornholio (Sep 28, 2006 5:15:20 PM)
how do you see the game unfolding?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:15:20 PM)
Hi the greatcornhole! Smile! Buckeyes are clearly the better team and they win 28-13. And I think I'm being generous. The better the field conditions, the more impressive the Buckeyes will be.

brutustheoes (Sep 28, 2006 5:17:47 PM)
Just to add. I have coached against Saine for what seems like decades now. He is the most impressice football player we have faced since Quinn Pitcock. WE play piqua next week. It will be along game plan day :( I believe he could play running bacj if they want him to. More powerful than people think!

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:17:47 PM)
Oh his power running with the ball reminded me of Chris Wells last year. He was very impressive with his strength and power as well as his speed. Thank you for pointing that out. The only thing Saine might really be lacking is that inate ability to cut and slash as well as I would like. But he's so very good no question. And as you know, I'm sure, he's a better kid than he is a football player.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:19:08 PM)
I'm going to try to get to the Troy-Piqua game later in the year if I can fit it into my schedule. I've heard way too much about that contest to pass on it if I can help it. No promises but that's a game I have my eye on right now.

thegreatcornholio (Sep 28, 2006 5:22:26 PM)
Where will the traveling Housteau Friday Night Road Show be at tomorrow?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:22:26 PM)
As I've already mentioned, I'm going to chill out and take a five minute drive to Stambaugh Stadium to watch the Harding vs. Ursuline game. I need to talk to check out my guy Danny Herron and some of the young talent on the Ursuline side. Matt Yarab is absolutely having a great year for Ursuline, btw. Justin Brown is a young junior I have my eye on and sophomore Darrell Mason for Ursuline are two guys I'm looking forward to seeing also.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:24:48 PM)
I'm really interested in the Maple Heights and Mentor game. Maple Heights was my pick at the beginning of the year in Division II to win it all. I really like the talent on that team for D-II and I'm looking for the upset in that game. Ignatius and Massillon play this week also. What's up with Massillon this year??? If Ignatius gets this win on the road then they are definitely for real going down the stretch. What a game the Holy War between Eds and Iggy will be.

clickclack (Sep 28, 2006 5:28:01 PM)
how important do you think lichter has been to our team and how much of an impact do you see him making in the future? do recruits hear about him and see what he is able to do and maybe want to train with him?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:28:01 PM)
Hi clickclack...love the name...I really like Eric Lichter...I liked him before he got hired because all of those guys training and Speed and Strenght think/thought so highly of him and Tim Roberston. Barton and some of the other guys I've talked to think highly of him. I know the Cleveland area kids are well aware of him and the speed and strength facility. He's a great hire and he was under consideration at OSU when Butch Reynolds was hired as well.

ohs (Sep 28, 2006 5:28:40 PM)
I think we get Barks

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:28:41 PM)
You're not the only one who thinks that!

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:30:44 PM)
Gary, so you think that the offense will have that Texas game type crispness to it on Saturday?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:30:44 PM)
I really do. They need to come out strong and play well from the beginning. They're overdue. But JT will play not-to-lose early on until they find a rythm.

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:35:39 PM)
hey gary...i met you at the tcc anthony wayne game...i love our depth at LB i think the starters should be terry little animal and grant...i just wanted to know your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:35:40 PM)
Hey dude...and that was his name before he left the chat...I appreciate the kind words you had for Bucknuts when I met you at the TCC game. I had to put your photo up on the gallery. I too love our depth at LB both this year and in the future. Gibson is one my favorite guys and he doesn't even see the field. I hope they add Hines to the mix this year. He can play the game at LB. Homan, Lil Animal, Moeller...the list goes on and on...don't know how Mark Johnson is going to turn out. Right now I'm very happy with the rotation and the way Heacock explained things. Isn't Curtis Terry a great story? What a stud he's turning into.

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:38:31 PM)
Do you see Homan getting more playing time this week against Iowa? It seems to me we struggle when Kerr is on the field.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:38:31 PM)
I've always been a big Kerr fan and I'm glad to see him have a chance to play significant minutes this year. Good for him. That being said, would I be disappointed to see Homan getting more minutes as the season wore on...not at all. But he obviously has to earn his time. I'm sure he'd be playing more if he warranted the opportunites from practice. I don't know about the struggle with Kerr part because the defense hasn't struggled very much this year at all. But yeah I'd be happy to see Homan on the field no question.

section22 (Sep 28, 2006 5:39:26 PM)
i just came in, are they talking recruiting?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:39:26 PM)
Hi section22, we're talking whatever is on your mind be it high school football to recruiting to our beloved Buckeyes!

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:42:39 PM)
Have you checked out Homan's brother at Coldwater? Adam Homan is an absolute beast. He is bigger than Ross and he's only a Sophmore. After 5 games he already has 63 tackles. I hope he follows in Ross' footsteps to OSU!

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:42:39 PM)
Hi montanabuck...I'll have to ask his mom and dad about Adam when I see them. I will make it a point to do that. But no I have not seen him play this year. I'm sure I will see him before he graduates from Coldwater. I met the Homan at Chaminade....Ross' cousin. He was at one of the camps or combines at Ohio State this offseason.

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:44:08 PM)
sorry i got here late.....any bigtime recruits going to Iowa this weekend we should now about?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:44:08 PM)
BuckOfive got here late and left early...I don't know who all will be at Iowa but I do know that Jermale Hines and Shawntel Rowell and Otis Merrill from Glenville are going to the Iowa game. I'm not sure about Jefferson.

BuckeyeBill (Sep 28, 2006 5:46:22 PM)
So if Iowa is a win in your book, is MSU any better that Iowa? Do they match up better?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:46:23 PM)
As Herbie stated once or twice during the game and Desmond Howard reiterated time and time again after the game...Michigan State is simply Michigan State. Howard was relentless on the Spartans. Michigan is the only team that even remotely scares me but they have Lloyd Carr on their sideline. Smile!

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:50:23 PM)
Sorry I am late. Will we see more blitzes in this game to throw off Tate?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:50:23 PM)
Texas Bucknut had to run before his question got asked....I really like the feel for the game that Heacock seems to have with his defense. An adjustment or two and he see seems to be money in the bank. I'm sure Heacock be aggressive against Tate because there is no way they have success running the ball for the most part. They can't let Tate get comfortable even though the people catching the ball aren't anything to worry a lot about.

ohs (Sep 28, 2006 5:53:01 PM)
is torrence a cb or S? and do we get his brother?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:53:01 PM)
When I saw Torrence in week one he looked more like a corner to me than a safety. I think Clifford and Oliver are more of the safety types in this group. And from the way it looks, I would say yes yes Ohio State gets his brother as well.

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:57:21 PM)
How good is Danny Herron? I don't think Harding has had a good O-line since 1990 so he may be underrated as most Harding backs usually are. Do we take another RB in this class?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:57:21 PM)
I like Herron a lot personally. I hope to find out more about his season tomorrow night when I watch him against Ursuline and talk to him afterwards. Does OSU take another back? I don't think so. We don't need another Jordan Mabin debate here. As far as I can tell, two guys have a really good chance to win Mr. Football this year right now...among others...one is Brandon Saine and the other is Jordan Mabin. But what do I know about recognizing talented football players!

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 5:59:36 PM)
I was up for the Iowa game in Columbus last year and we totally dominated the LOS. Hodge and Greenway are gone and I believe both corners as well. Do we run right at them again Saturday night? No way they can put 8 or 9 in the box with Teddy, Gonzo, and Robiskie!

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 5:59:36 PM)
Tampa I think you sort of summed up my thinking in a nutshell. And we will run, run, run till the Hawkeyes take our game plan away! We might even see Chris Wells have his coming out party this week.

osudave55 (Sep 28, 2006 6:04:15 PM)
Hi Gary - As a Y-Town native and Ohio State grad living in Pittsburgh I really appreciate your chats. I read Heacock's comments on Bucknuts earlier today and found it quite telling that Freeman is relegated to passing situations. Was he overhyped or is he just going to take longer to learn the position than most expected? Or was Curtis Terry underestimated?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:04:15 PM)
Hi osudave55...thanks for joining the chat tonight. I think Freeman is still learning to play the game. The redshirt last year should really help him in the long run. Curtis Terry is a very confident individual, they're grown that way at Glenville. They're all turning into stars right in front of our eyes and obviously Terry is not going to be the exception. The better players will play...we know that. Terry is pretty big and he's kept his speed. Speed used to be his game in high school. Now he's a hammer. Be patient with Freeman but be happy for Terry...he's worked his way into this opportunity.

Guest (Sep 28, 2006 6:06:45 PM)
Are there any young Buckeyes moving up the depth chart in practices ?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:06:45 PM)
Section 22 asked this question before he left the chat... I do think someone like Robert Rose will continue to have more opportunities but it's the Big Ten season now and you won't see any wholesale changes in personnel at this point. Guys are understanding their roles and they're trying to help the team win. Dexter Larimore is one youngster drawing rave reviews but he won't lose his redshirt this year.

osudave55 (Sep 28, 2006 6:08:37 PM)
Most of the Bucknuts staff seem to think the game will be extremely difficult and predict Ohio State will win marginally. I just can't see this game being close. I don't see any matchup on paper that Iowa wins...what am I missing other than it being an away night game?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:08:37 PM)
Other then it being a night game in the Big Ten on the road, Yikes, at a rowdy stadium...I think every thing else favors Ohio State in a big way. The better the weather, the bigger the rout!

oldtimebuck (Sep 28, 2006 6:12:06 PM)
Not sure if my last question went through. Admittedly, this is a minor issue, but I'm interested in your take. When we win the opening coin toss, Tressel defers to the second half to receive the ball. Given our recent slow starts, the smaller number of plays per game, the need to minimize opposing crowd noise, and the fact that defenses get tired before offenses, wouldn't it be better to take the ball at the first chance and try to get a lead? Thanks.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:12:06 PM)
Hi oldtimebuck...I've been on the sideline of many Jim Tressel coached games for many years and it seems like forever that if his team wins the toss...he defers. That gives him a chance to dictated field position with the wind in the first half and make any adjustments to the game or game conditions in the second half. I don't know this to be 100 percent true but it seems like JT has always deferred when his team wins the toss. It's like death and taxes!

Pastor Jack (Sep 28, 2006 6:14:38 PM)
How many rushing yards do you think Drew Tate has on Saturday (no including sack yardage?)

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:14:39 PM)
A couple of shots to the oblique Pastor Jack and Tate might be doing much running. I imagine OSU has worked really hard on containment this week in practice and will certainly make Tate have to beat them in the air if they're going to have any chance at all to win. I don't see him getting any excessive amounts of yardage but he will probably be their top rusher in the game, minus sack yardage of course.

kleintime16 (Sep 28, 2006 6:20:34 PM)
Late to the chat ... any new recruiting news? Whats the latest with the remaining scholarship offered instate players?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:20:34 PM)
Hey kleintime...good to see you made it tonight. Instate guys we're probably only looking at Thomas, Hines and Jeremiah and maybe Peake still at this point. I was reading about Mark Woolridge setting a school record last week with 400 plus yards and I thought about Nick Schepis. Mabin set a school record last week but we're continually told that he's obviously a product of the system there at Nordonia. I don't know who else...at this point...Dewey Elliott? Not sure.

osudave55 (Sep 28, 2006 6:24:02 PM)
Of the three Mooney stars who do you think will get an offer from Ohio State? Also, who is the best talent- Beachum?

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:24:02 PM)
Taylor Hill is also pretty darn good for Mooney as well. They have four legimate players in the junior class and Johnny Simon in the sophomore class at DE is a stud also. I think Danny McCarthy, who already has an offer from OSU, is playing lights out this year and Zordich is playing well too. Beachum is trying to get healthy up to this point in the season. I think all three could be offered to be honest with you. Right now McCarthy is the top talent but I have a hunch Beachum will be when it's all said and done at the end of next season. I'll take any of the three on my team to be honest with you. All three would be a bonus!

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:26:38 PM)
I'm going to call it a wrap at this time. I have to get to WYTV for a live TV show at 10:30. Every thursday night at 10:30 if you're in the Youngstown area you can catch myself and Bob Hannon on the air live for a half hour talking high school football and Ohio State football for the most part. It's a fun time and it's my privilege to represent Bucknuts.com and J.J. Huddle on the show. Armstrong channel 13 is the place to tune in if you're in the area. It's on Warner cable as well but I don't know what channel.

GaryHousteau (Sep 28, 2006 6:28:49 PM)
Again OSU 28-13...could be worse if the weather conditions are better. Thanks for chatting with me tonight. I appreciate those of you who took the effort to ask questions and stick around for the duration. Have a great weekend. Enjoy a high school game and root really hard for the Buckeyes on Saturday night. I sure will. Go Bucks!
