MFTODD (Sep 29, 2006 9:48:00 AM)
Steve, looks like we are going to be in the nickel for defense; have we figured out how to stop the screen and outside running?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:48:56 AM)
Stopping the screen is key. They love to throw the slip screen to Grigsby and the standard screen to Young. Young is best between the tackles. Sims may be able to beat them to the corner. I like Ohio State

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:49:21 AM)
OSU's match-up here. As long as they keep Tate in check, they ought to be in good shape. Big if there, of course ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:49:27 AM)
But they did it last year.

MFTODD (Sep 29, 2006 9:50:17 AM)
How do you see our offense trying to get out to a fast start? What do you think we will try to exploit?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:50:28 AM)
That is a key question. I will be honest ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:51:12 AM)
I don't think they're first-year corners can contain Ginn and Gonzo. So going up top early may be a key, Ted had an early catch-and-run at Texas. Maybe something safe like that. But I will be honest ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:52:01 AM)
Iowa State had 171 yards rushing against Iowa 2 weeks ago. I'm not sure they can shut off Pittman, either. So it may not look like OSU is jumping on Iowa -- but they are if they start pounding Pittman early and he keeps getting 5-6 yards a pop.

buckeyeinsaline (Sep 29, 2006 9:52:30 AM)
Steve - I like your Score prediction of 31 -17 if it doesn't rain during the game. We are due. What's the weather prediction for tomorow night?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:53:54 AM)
Looks like 72 and sun during the day with a 20 percent chance of rain. It will probably cool off into the 60s during the game.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:54:18 AM)
I like my prediction, too. That's why I picked it. Maybe I need my head examined for such a decisive win.

bb1 (Sep 29, 2006 9:54:28 AM)
Steve, whats the word on any recruits?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:55:40 AM)
I enjoyed my conversation this week with Kyle Long. I can't sit here and say he, Brewster and Adams are Ohio State locks or anything. But I think they see a golden opportunity to step in and play right away and they like each other and really like Ohio State. So that's good for the future.

MFTODD (Sep 29, 2006 9:55:46 AM)
Are we going to hearing anything regarding Martin soon? Sounded like he wanted to pull the trigger but had a game..........any other recruiting thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:57:13 AM)
Martin was at the Florida-Tennesssee game a few weeks back. Says he may be at Stanford-ND in a few weeks and OSU-Michigan at the end. Doesn't sound like a decision is imminent.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:58:39 AM)
I just like the way Ohio State is positioned. They have a ton of great prospects looking hard at them. That makes it much easier when they are in a selective posture. The way scholarships break down, if they can finish with 2-3 good linemen and fill some other position needs in this class, even if they lose a guy or 2, no biggie, because they still only figure to need to fill 15 or so spots next year. They can isolate, divide and conquer on the ones they want.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 9:58:44 AM)
Great position to be in.

MFTODD (Sep 29, 2006 9:59:10 AM)
Do we get pressure on the QB with our front four? If so, can our defensive ends keep him contained in the pocket? I'm think we might put a spy on Tate

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:01:48 AM)
Tate is extremely experienced and very dangerous. They need to get after him like they did last year. He does not have a deep threat in my mind. They love for him to distribute the ball to a lot of different outlets. That is what makes it tough. They will attack in short chunks any number of ways. You almost have to defend side to side more than you do front to back.

bringoniowa (Sep 29, 2006 10:01:57 AM)
I know playing at Kinnick against KF will be tough but I just don't like their matchups against us, their CB's are young and their D has given up yards on the ground. Have you heard anything new on their OLine injuries?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:03:52 AM)
I think Jon Miller said he did not expect the LT and the center to play. We will see, Iowa is a lot like OSU they do not discuss such matters as a matter of course. I agree on the points about the CBs and the ground game. Iowa just did not seem that solid in both phases against Iowa State.

MFTODD (Sep 29, 2006 10:04:03 AM)
Basketball question: It looks like the preseason will be handled other than North Carolina and Florida on the road. Do we have any idea on how season tickets sales are going and student ticket predictions? I am fortunate enough to have season tickets.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:05:44 AM)
No, have not heard anything about ticket sales. Those early season games will be a tough sell other than as a curiosity factor. The opponents aren't much to get excited about, especially if there is no Oden. Now Iowa State and Tennessee and the Big Ten those will be at or near capacity. I guess that's worth checking out. They'll want some pub to sell whatever they have left (thing 400 level ... ha ha).

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:06:17 AM)
Am I the only one seeing the game as being close early with the Bucks pulling away in the 4th quarter?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:06:58 AM)
No, I agree with you. That is how the last 3 games have gone. OSU is ahead like 52-9 in the fourth quarter this year. They are well conditioned and finish people off. They know they have the ability to do that.

wwt (Sep 29, 2006 10:07:37 AM)
I tried to post a funny radio call-in link on the MSU-ND collapse on the premium board twice earlier in the week. Both times it seems as if it was removed. Is there some policy against posting such links.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:10:16 AM)
I don't know. I saw that link somewhere and heard some of the cut. That guy was off the deep end. I didn't remove it. I don't know what to say. Sometimes, the monitors don't like links off the network. Maybe that was it. I know somebody put a link up and it didn't work. Maybe it was taken down because of that. I just don't know. That was hilarious though. The co-host was trying to calm the guy down because there is no way he can show his face in East Lansing again anytime soon.

bb1 (Sep 29, 2006 10:10:22 AM)
there were already anothe couple of links about the show

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:10:48 AM)
There you go. Removed because it was a dupe ... that seems to be a point of emphasis nowadays.

ottobuck (Sep 29, 2006 10:10:53 AM)
Is the BDBITL going to be there?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:13:33 AM)
Not that I am aware of. If they're going on a Big Ten trip, they should be at this game, though. That would be a long bus trip, 8 hours each way.

keato (Sep 29, 2006 10:13:38 AM)
Steve, sorry I'm late to the show and I hope this has not been touched on yet: Last week I mentioned that Ginn needs to go North and South when returning punts instead of tiptoeing around. Well by the looks of last week he still has no clue, by my stats he lost anywhere from 35 to 40 yards in field position by not coming up and catching punts. What are your thoughts this week???

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:14:51 AM)
Yeah, Ted was very tentative. He mentioned the PSU punter was left-footed and that puts a different spin on the ball and it was windy and wet. Safe may have been the best way to play it. But he let 2 punts go he probably should have fielded and then fair caught one on the 6. Later on he was one step away from maybe breaking one, so that was good ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:15:03 AM)
But I agree, he can do much better. He has in the past.

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:15:55 AM)
Steve can you talk about why we have not seen Roy Hall this year? Is Robo that much better?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:17:33 AM)
Roy had a high ankle sprain and that kept him out. I know he caught a ball against UC. Not sure if he got in last week. Robiskie shows what can happen when you work hard, watch film and take coaching. He's gone from being a Plan B recruit -- if you want to call him that, as some did -- to being a front-line player in this offense. He is only scraping the tip of the iceberg with the things he can do.

hamiltuckbuck (Sep 29, 2006 10:17:41 AM)
Do we see the return of the duel punt returners this week? It seemed to be very effective last year, and provided the returner that initial block to gain some room.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:18:56 AM)
Might be nice to do that. Not sure why they went away from it. We are seeing so many feeble efforts to avoid Ted, having another guy back there could help them make more positive plays. Like Keato noted, they left a lot of yards on the table last week.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:20:11 AM)
As Bob Knight would say ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:20:20 AM)
Does anybody have an intelligent question?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:20:21 AM)
Ha ha.

ottobuck (Sep 29, 2006 10:22:20 AM)
Is Terry fast enough to keep up with Iowa's tight ends?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:23:41 AM)
Yes, probably, but being fast enough and actually covering them are two entirely different things. I've poormouthed Iowa a lot here, but Chandler with his size and Moeaki with his speed make a pair of mismatch opps for Iowa. No doubt about that. It's going to take LBs and safeties working together on those guys. They are going to make some plays because of the way Tate distributes the ball.

pdm (Sep 29, 2006 10:23:46 AM)
Steve, Malcom Jenkins...is he here three or four years? This kid is a player.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:25:14 AM)
Good question.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:26:26 AM)
My feeling is it will depend on how he is rated in the 08 NFL draft rankings. If he is a top 20 pick or first rounder, he'd probably go. It's too premature to say he'd be considered as such. He's started 7-8 games, but he looks like he is on his way. He is one notch south of Doss as a competitor ... and he can cover. So he has a great combination.

bringoniowa (Sep 29, 2006 10:26:45 AM)
I take it the plan is to use Terry in base and Freeman in nickel situations and that Kerr is starting on the opposite side is Homan's injury still bothering him?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:27:40 AM)
Wasn't aware Homan was injured, but I guess he has not played quite as much with all of the nickel that has been played. I don't have a firm grasp on how they will rotate personnel. They change it on a week to week basis to match the opponent.

buckeyeinsaline (Sep 29, 2006 10:27:47 AM)
I really think we are due for big night from Troy and the boys. Would be great for OSU once again on TV. With Gameday, Herbie, and Brent.... Holy Buckeye!

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:28:26 AM)
Yep, the world will be watching and as Vince Vaughn said about his wife in Old School (I think it was Leah Remini) ... "always watching, always judging ..." (ha ha)

JimC (Sep 29, 2006 10:28:39 AM)
Hi Steve, Has Freeman been demoted? Is it permanent? I really like the physical play of Terry.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:29:59 AM)
This was the first week he and Terry were listed as co-starters. Take it for whatever it is worth. Sounds like each will play depending on down-and-distance and defensive package. Nothing is permanent in this game. Things change every week. I agree on Terry, very physical, makes plays, I want to see how he holds up against run and pass and over time.

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:30:06 AM)
Can you talk about the 3 O-Line recruits that have struck up a freindship. What is our chances to land all three?( Brewster, Long, Adams) Also what is are chances with Shugarts

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:30:59 AM)
I've been following this for a long time and the package deal always sounds good but rarely ever pans out. These kids have 16 months until they sign. The world will change a great deal in that 16 months ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:32:12 AM)
I think they are extremely close. Long even joked they talk so much they could be three-way dating (ha ha). Adams I think is OSU all the way. It's 15 minutes from his house. Something seems to be pulling Brewster from Fla. to Ohio State. Would be a major coup to get him. I think he will give several other schools strong consideration as well, though. So we'll see on that one ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:33:52 AM)
Long likes it in Ohio. He wants to be somewhere where college football matters. That made an impression on him in 2000 when he came to Canton for his dad's Hall of Fame induction. He will also consider other schools and also has the pull of possibly being a baseball pitcher. Left-handed power pitchers are worth a lot of money. Again, so much will happen in the next 6-9 months even to shape this. They should all be back for Michigan, with Shugarts in tow as well. We'll see after that ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:34:14 AM)
My guess is that none of them go public with a verbal until after signing day.

JimC (Sep 29, 2006 10:34:23 AM)
What do you think of MSU's latest meltdown? Does it start their annual downward spiral?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:35:29 AM)
No, they will stabilize with a resounding win over Illinois. With each TD they score, they'll only be more upset they didn't beat ND. I think they'll be OK. Key will be how they do against Michigan or OSU.

hamiltuckbuck (Sep 29, 2006 10:35:44 AM)
Do we see a lot of nickel and dime coverage being used, most of the game, to offset Iowa's use of backs and TE's as their passing attack...force the Hawks to beat us with the run? Kinda opposite JT's usual game plan, but makes them one dimensional, running against our D-line and funneling everything back inside.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:36:33 AM)
Probably so. That makes a lot of sense. Whatever Heacock used against them last year seemed to be effective. They put a lot of heat on Tate and blanketed his receivers. Oh, and they stopped the run, too. Iowa will show this defense a lot of looks, though.

pdm (Sep 29, 2006 10:36:44 AM)
Steve, the LB merry-go-round, does it eventually bite us in the backside?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:37:39 AM)
Possibly. Laurinaitis seems to be the rock and they just keep rotating the guys around him. You hope they are prepared for whatever the offense has to offer. I think Heacock and Fickell's track record so far is exemplary in what they are trying to do. Can't argue with these results.

bringoniowa (Sep 29, 2006 10:37:45 AM)
We are in on so many quality lineman and recruits next year does OSU leave some free for next year?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:38:33 AM)
That is possible. With all the recent changes, I need to sit down and get a firm count on what is coming back and so on. I think it makes sense to bank 1 or 2 for next year, when they may only have 14 or so spots to start with.

DantheMan (Sep 29, 2006 10:38:46 AM)
I don't think the Spartans choked and folded. I think they did OK. Signed, The St. Louis Cardinals

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:39:00 AM)
Ha ha.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:39:21 AM)
I need Houston and St. L to go 0-3 and Reds to go 3-0 and I'll be smiling on Monday.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:39:54 AM)
I like our chances with Harang and Arroyo pitching 2 of the 3 at Pittsburgh. But we need a lot of help.

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:40:02 AM)
Is there a chance we lose one of our defensive coaches next year with the job the are doing this year? I think Heacock Fickell stays but what about the other 2

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:41:49 AM)
No, I don't think so unless somebody wants to hire Beckman as a coordinator or he gets a chance as a MAC level head coach or something. Fickell won't leave unless he gets a head job. I have lost track of what those guys make, but I think short of a head job or coordinator's spot at a top-10 school, I doubt they'd make any more by leaving. It would be a lateral move. They are positioned to have quite a program at Ohio State for the next 4-5 years. Next year might be a 9-3 year, but after that it looks pretty good. ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:42:43 AM)
I think Hazell could be a hot commodity. Maybe an NFL team gives him a shot as an assistant. Fickell could be the 2000s version of Esco Sarkinnen. He got in at age 31, I believe. Will be hard to ever pry him out of there.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:42:55 AM)
Maybe just maybe ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:42:58 AM)
He's next in line.

ottobuck (Sep 29, 2006 10:43:06 AM)
Rory Nicol was open for a TD last week. Does he get a second chance this week?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:44:02 AM)
Rory needs to stay with it. He is about all they have at TE right now. The others are just so green and can't be trusted to handle all of the assignments (or you'd see a lot more 2-TE sets). I liked sneaking Stan White down there to H-back and TE some. He's a nice player. Big catch and run down the sideline last week.

lharbers (Sep 29, 2006 10:45:28 AM)
What do you think the problem has been in the first half the last 2 games? Execution? mistakes? playcalling?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:47:23 AM)
I think they weren't up to play UC. They just weren't into it ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:48:56 AM)
Penn State got after them early. I see a pick on the first series, they hit Smith to cause an incompletion on the second. Field position worked against OSU last week. They started on their own 19, PSU 39 (missed FG after INT), own 6, own 7 and own 31 in the first half. It works much better when you take over on the 50 (ha ha).

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:50:11 AM)
It is just after 2 here in the Eastern time zone, anything else today before I go and pack for my whirlwind trip to Iowa City?

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:50:15 AM)
I am the only one that wants to see TG throw the ball on the end around?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:50:22 AM)
Like Tressel would say ...

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:50:52 AM)
He can throw it, but he better complete. Getting wicky wacky like that and throwing a bad pick isn't good either. I like No. 10 throwing the ball, thank you.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:51:52 AM)
He seems to do pretty well. Maybe a courtesy throw back to No. 10 might be cool. I want to read one of those box scores that says Ginn 34 pass from Smith, Ginn 55 pass from Smith, Ginn 44 pass from Smith, Smith 33 pass from Ginn (ha ha).

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:52:41 AM)
That one could join the Robiskie play on the Heisman reel (Barton even came out and said that after the game, that the Robiskie play would be shown during the show in December).

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:52:56 AM)
That's what Iam talking about

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:54:45 AM)
Plenty of opps coming with BG (lost 38-3 to Kent, who this side of D-III loses to Kent by 5 TDs and at home, no less?), Indiana (Southern Illinois, need I say more?), Illinois (33-0 to Rutgers?) and NW (New Hampshire, need I say more?). Those should be lopsided, one would think.

pmoss (Sep 29, 2006 10:55:32 AM)
How bout the tight end Randolph from Elder any info on him?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:56:07 AM)
Kyle Rudolph is 6-6, 210. Nice looking prospect. Trotwood has a nice TE as well named Brandon Moore. OSU could use a TE in that 08 class.

kahuna825 (Sep 29, 2006 10:56:17 AM)
With Ferentz being the coach he is, do you see Iowa pulling out all the stops? (i.e. trick play, onside kick) certainly KF can't believe he has the talent level or does he believe that the home field advantage may be enough.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:56:46 AM)
Home field may be enough. I heard Tate is 16-1 at home as a starter (egads). But, yeah, Iowa can take some risks. They have nothing to lose.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:57:24 AM)
Any final blasts today!

darrenconrad (Sep 29, 2006 10:58:00 AM)
Biggest keys to victory on Saturday?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:59:01 AM)
One, get after Tate -- If you see it's the second quarter and they haven't sacked him and he's able to break contain and run for first downs or stay alive and make big pass plays, OSU may have a problem. He is the catalyst. He is the distributor. They need to contain him and make it harder on him.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 10:59:33 AM)
Two, establish Pittman -- Iowa State got 171 yards against Iowa. They ran right at them. More of that would be good. Their front 7 is small and/or inexperienced.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 11:00:46 AM)
Three, big plays -- I don't think their corners match up with Ginn and Gonzalez. I don't see their front four pressuring Smith. If he has time, they should be able to make some things happen in the air.

ohs (Sep 29, 2006 11:00:50 AM)
looking at schedule for next year, we can win at Wash. Only tough games at PSU and MI. i say in 07 even w/o Ted and Troy we still only lose one game.

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 11:02:09 AM)
They will be the kings of NE Ohio with Akron, Kent and YSU on the docket. I think they are still ahead of Wash. next year. Each team will have a new QB. I assume Pittman will be back. That's big. I think 10-2 is a best case scenario, but 9-3 seems more likely.

hamiltuckbuck (Sep 29, 2006 11:05:25 AM)
Steve, I can't believe you think scUM beats OSU, even with a new QB, and in the out-house. Didn't JT prove he could do that in 01?

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 11:06:01 AM)
Ha ha. You have to give the devil his due every once in a while. That's 14 months from now, but it would probably be Henne and Hart against ???

SteveHelwagen (Sep 29, 2006 11:06:31 AM)
We'll cross that bridge when we come to it (ha ha).

\"always watching, always judging ...\" (ha ha)
