Housteau Chat Archive: Oct. 5

Bucknuts staffer Gary Housteau stopped by this afternoon to chat with premium subscribers. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 9:58:00 AM)
I'm in now everyone and moderation has been turned on finally! Thanks for hanging around. If you have anything on your mind pertaining to our Bucks and high school football then start firing away with your questions.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 9:59:12 AM)
My weekend schedule will take me to Warren's Mollenkopf's Stadium on Friday to see Cardinal Mooney take on Cleveland Benedictine. It's my first Mooney game of the year so I'm very excited to see the Cardinals play.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:01:04 AM)
With the late start on the Buckeye game on Saturday, it doesn't look like I'll be able to catch a Saturday night game but you never know. Ignatius and Harding play and I think that if the Raiders play well they could surprise the Wildcats who are obviously having a great season this year.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:02:25 AM)
I made a couple of phone calls before my chat to try to get a read on Greg Little but I wasn't able to come up with anything concrete. Just speculation. Last I heard it was Notre Dame and North Carolina but that was after his Notre Dame visit.

Mike68 (Oct 5, 2006 10:10:08 AM)
Gary- Do you honestly feel that Hines' grades will be good enough to get him an offer? If so, will this be another Ray Small-esque case where it goes down to the wire next summer on him being admitted?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:10:08 AM)
Hi Mike68...Hines' GPA is not a concern at 2.9 but his ACT score is. He's taking it in October again but he has some work to do still. I tend to think he'll make it. It might take some time but I'm certain he'll get in. He has a good family base and they're clearly behind him...and they all love the Buckeyes!

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 10:13:59 AM)
I hate losing A. Russell, but I think this is what O'Neal needs in order to become the superstar that he can be. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:13:59 AM)
Hi chuangtsu...I think you hit the nail on the head. JO has had a lot of time to realize what he needs to do to get on the playing field and now the process has sped up right before his eyes with the injury to Russell. I think JO will be perfectly fine in time. The ability is certainly there but he needs to get comfortable with the actual flow of the game and I'm confident he'll be more than fine. He has some wicked talent. Someone who knows told me JO will be just fine. BG is a good game for him to get some solid reps in.

rbuck (Oct 5, 2006 10:16:34 AM)
Hi Gary, As always GREAT JOB! Sorry I'm a little late, any word on where Little might be going?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:16:34 AM)
Hi rbuck...I'm a little late too due to some administrative problems on the chat site. I made a couple of calls this morning to see if I could find out anything new about Little but I got nothing really concrete from the people I spoke with. Last I heard, after his ND visit, not his OSU visit, was that it was ND and UNC. I don't know if that's changed since his OSU visit and I don't know if his USC visit is just a token one or not this weekend. It sounds like he's already made up his mind. I wouldn't be surprised at all if it is UNC.

buckmark (Oct 5, 2006 10:20:45 AM)
Gary, I read this morning that Kyle Jefferson hasn't heard from the Bucks in a while. Does he (or any other Glenville kids) end up as a Buck this year?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:20:45 AM)
Hi buckmark...From what I know, I'm almost certain that if Hines gets his test score that he'll be a Buckeye. I know the staff is steering hard for Jefferson as well but if that happens it won't happen until later. Eric Thomas is an interesting prospect as well but I don't think he will get an OSU offer. But I still think there is a longshot chance for Jefferson. Hines is top five or six talent in Ohio this season.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 10:24:15 AM)
Gary - Nevada Buck says Ben Martin is a Buckeye... You Agree?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:24:15 AM)
Buckeyeinsaline asked about Nevada and Martin before he left the chat...If Nevada says it, that's very encouraging to hear. I also have two other good sources that says Martin is a Buckeye. But the thing that bothers me some is that I still echos from some of my ND people that Martin is in play. Because of that I will set a meaningless percentage at 75 percent that Martin will be a Buckeye. How could he not?

keato (Oct 5, 2006 10:29:23 AM)
Gary, I know you are a huge fan of Mr. Ginn so don't take this the wrong way but don't you think you and just about everyone else hypes him up just a little???

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:29:23 AM)
Hi keato...From an outsiders point of view...maybe. But tell me another coach in Ohio who sends kids off to college like he does...was honored by the Black Coaches Association (or some group like that) as their coach of the year...coached the winning team in the U.S. Army All-American game...Is seen on television during Buckeye games at Texas and Iowa...and sends his best players to Ohio State every year? If that's cause for him being too hyped then I'm guilty as charged. I've never met another football coach like him. He's truly a great person and does wonderful things for his kids. I think he's worthy of the hype. Others won't give him his credit until he wins a state title. I can respect both opinions.

Guest (Oct 5, 2006 10:32:07 AM)
Gary, how is Will Crall doing at TE, might he ever sniff the top 3 rotation?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:32:07 AM)
Bunks22 asks about Will Crall...and that's interesting because he's always a player that catches my eye every week in warmups because he looks the part and I don't remember his number ever. I don't know if he will ever sniff the top 3 rotation or not but if he hangs in there and works hard...he might have a chance down the road.

buckeyeram4 (Oct 5, 2006 10:34:16 AM)
Not to overlook the Mighty Falcons of BGSU (Ok so I am)....with the injury bug hitting the Spartans HARD along with the fact that their coaching staff has completely lost control, do you think there is any realistic chance of them giving us a legitimate game?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:34:16 AM)
Hi buckeyeram4...it's okay to overlook BG because we all are doing it. But no the Spartans are done put a fork in them. After U of M takes them out to the wood shed and beats the you know what out of them this week...they'll be finished and maybe Steve Mariucci will be coaching them against the Buckeyes.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 10:37:07 AM)
just joining, is there hope that Anderson Russell gets a med redshirt and extra year like D'and???

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:37:07 AM)
Hi ohs...Steve is the guy to ask this tomorrow but I would think he would still be eligible for a medical redshirt down the road. In all reality though, if Anderson Russell is a starter in his redshirt freshman year, he won't be around for what would amount to a sixth year. If he recovers healthy from his knee injury, I don't see him around longer than four years anyway at the most.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 10:37:40 AM)
O'neil will be good by Michigan game

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:37:40 AM)
I agree ohs...

Heater (Oct 5, 2006 10:39:37 AM)
Do you think that Tressel "tries" to get Troy some Heisman-esque stats over the next few weeks with the lesser competition?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:39:37 AM)
Hi heater...no I don't think he will "try" to do that but it will just happen naturally within the flow of the game...He might have Heisman stats by the end of the first quarter if not the first half for sure. The game plan will be carried out to the fullest while he's in there.

Buckguy108 (Oct 5, 2006 10:41:08 AM)
Who starts at QB in 2007?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:41:08 AM)
Hi Buckguy...right now I say Rob Schoenhoft. He'll be a solid third year guy by then and I think he's a tremendous talent and competitor. Not that the other two aren't...that's just the way I see it.

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 10:44:08 AM)
Is Barksdale worth all of the trouble? I know we need DTs this year, but something about him makes me think that he isn't a JT kind of kid.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:44:08 AM)
Good question chuangtsu. I don't know that answer. He seems to have had a master plan and has executed it brilliantly. Maybe he is a JT kind of guy. He's smart, he's articulate and he's got great size. There's a slight chance I may see him play next week. I'm trying to make that happen. He might indeed be worth the trouble!

keato (Oct 5, 2006 10:49:39 AM)
Gary, I think what coach Ginn does is amazing no matter if he has won a state title or not and the kids he sends to College and especilly to OSU is a tremendous accomplishment but I was referring to Ginn Jr!!! Sorry for the confusion.... I'm on record predicting if JR stays one more year then his old man would have coached two Heisman winners!! Now that would be something to hang your hat on!!!

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:49:39 AM)
I apologize for misunderstanding your question...when you Mr. Ginn I just assumed you met Coach Ginn...my bad. As far as TGII is concerned ...first of all Coach Ginn has yet to coach any Heisman trophy winner just yet and secondly...with a new QB next year who knows what will happen to TGII's production if he did stay around. The bottom line is, it makes no sense at all from TGII's standpoint to not cash in on the millions of dollars that will be coming his way after this year. Period. If you asked me a percentage of what I think there is for TGII to stay for another year is...I'll say 1 (one) percent! One injury to those talented and speedy legs of his and he kisses the money good bye. That's not going to happen. TGII has eight games left as a Buckeye so enjoy it while it lasts.

thegreatcornholio (Oct 5, 2006 10:51:31 AM)
Hi Gary, I still smell an end around with TG with a throwback to Troy for a TD vs UM. Wouldn't that be sweet?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:51:31 AM)
Hi the greatone...I would love to see that and more. I might be in the minority but I still believe TGII is being underutilized to this point in the season.

OSUBUCGUY (Oct 5, 2006 10:55:32 AM)
Gary, It seems to me that the talk of old about the Buckeyes having a letdown game late in the season like often happened during the Cooper years has finally gone the wayside. What do you make of this in terms of national respect and what Coach Tressel has done for the OSU football program?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:55:32 AM)
Hi OSUBUCGUY...JT's team's always play better as the season goes on. It was like that at YSU as well. By the time November comes around, his teams must be so mentally prepared for the task at hand that winning just comes natural. Look at his coaching record. Jim Tressel deserves the credit, 100 percent, for the type of teams that he coaches in November and beyond. Of course talent helps no question, but having talent at OSU is not going to be a problem. Especially when he is responsible for bringing the talent here.

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 10:56:55 AM)
Getting Devon Torrence has to help us with getting Devoe, right?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:56:55 AM)
I would certainly believe that to be the case. And Devoe is a heck of a talent no question.

mckbuckeye (Oct 5, 2006 10:58:58 AM)
Gary - How does Barksdale not come to OSU - Knowing that both tackles grad. this year?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 10:58:59 AM)
Hi mckbuckeye...It all makes so much sense doesn't it? Throw in the fact that his boy Vernon is a beast. I will be surprised if he doesn't pull an OSU hat out of the bag in San Antonio in January.

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 11:04:10 AM)
Would you say that Donnie Evege is better than Jordan Mabin? I don't get that one.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:04:10 AM)
I don't know how to answer that one. Probably everyone reading this knows how I feel about Jordan Mabin. When I went to see Evege two weeks ago, he didn't even play on defense and he was sharing time at running back. I think Donnie is a heck of nice kid and he's got good speed and a heck of a vertical jump, but when you compare him to Mabin, who is every bit as big as Evege or bigger, from a production standpoint, it's not even close. And again I mean no disprect to Donnie. He was great at OSU's camp this summer in that regard. But Evege will work hard and play hard for you when he gets an opportunity so that's all that matters. Mabin, on the other hand, is a solid Mr. Football candidate with Saine and Clifford. Mabin was at Pitt last week for an official visit. I'm guessing he will be a Panther before long. Good for him.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:05:46 AM)
scout has Josh Brent rated ahead of Barksdale. Not sure about that.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:05:46 AM)
I'm not sure about anything Scout does especailly if Martin is the only Ohio player to play in the All-American game. They'll only look foolish down the road when guys like Saine and Clifford are tearing it up and they weren't chosen to play in the Army A.A. game. Hello!

mckbuckeye (Oct 5, 2006 11:07:44 AM)
Wasn't Barksdale supposed to come to what ever school he chooses early? Can he wait till the Army game?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:07:44 AM)
He can and he will. Especially if it's Ohio State. He told me the other day that he will play in the game on Saturday and go right to his school of choice on the following Monday.

Bunks22 (Oct 5, 2006 11:11:29 AM)
Why do people around the OSU program to continue to question Tressel's about how he brings players along or how he uses them through out their carreers? Has he not show to know exactly what each SuperStar he has coached is cabable of and developed the talent. Hawk, Smith, Ginn, Gonzo, Lauranitis the whole freaking Oline...are all great examples of coach developing and using talent when it's time an getting athletes to play at their best.......

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:11:29 AM)
Hi Bunks22...all I can really say to your question is that I've been around JT in some capacity or another for close to 20 years and, although I'm not surprised, he has exceeded my expectations in every way since he's been at Ohio State. And I had high expectations for him when he was hired. It's a beautiful thing. And what's even nicer is that I know some of his close friends really well and it's so great to hear the way that he is when he's not in the public eye. He's truly a wonderful person and an exceptional football coach.

ottobuck (Oct 5, 2006 11:12:35 AM)
According to most tailgaters, Falcons don't take nearly as long to finish off as Hawkeyes, do we go 3 deep sat.?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:12:35 AM)
Hi ottobuck...sure everyone who isn't redshirtting will play in this game. I can't even predict a score because it will be off the charts.

mckbuckeye (Oct 5, 2006 11:15:59 AM)
That being the case - the cat will be out of the bag due to Barksdale having to be accepted to his school of choice and registered for classes. We should all know way before the Army game.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:15:59 AM)
I believe that will be leakable information! But I'm sure that Barksdale will keep a tight lock on the information in conjunction with the staff he will be working with. For instance, I knew that Donte Whitner was enrolling early before it became public because I knew that he submitted the paperwork to enroll early.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:17:51 AM)
I think we get both Barks and Brent but not Jeremiah, sounds like he's out

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:17:51 AM)
I saw Jeremiah at the last Buckeye game but I have not spoken with him since. I have no first-hand information to refute that. Barks and Brent would be nice however.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:19:14 AM)
who is next committ?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:19:14 AM)
Martin would be wonderful wouldn't he? I don't think that will happen until he comes to OSU for the Michigan game, if it happens then. But he kind of sounds like he would like to get this overwith doesn't he?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:20:16 AM)
I believe in week eight or night LaSalle plays at Columbus DeSales so hopefully I'll get to see him play there and try to find out more then.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:23:48 AM)
what are % odds the Gonzo or Pittman go early to NFL? Assuming both stay, are they first rounders in 08?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:23:48 AM)
I would say that Gonzo would be at a serious 50 percent while Pittman might be closer to 70 or 80 at this time. I think it would be senseless for Pittman to stay after this year. Gonzo would be the perfect JT kind of kid to stay around for another year.

mckbuckeye (Oct 5, 2006 11:26:32 AM)
Any news on the 08 OL recruits for early commits?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:26:32 AM)
Just all good news. I was told by someone who knows that Shugarts will likely be in for the Michigan along with Brewster and Adams...Not sure about Long. Rowell, even though everyone wants to dismiss him so easily, will certainly be here unless they're still in the playoffs...same with Adams. And I really like Sanders as well. What a tremendous group of offensive linemen.

JimC (Oct 5, 2006 11:27:13 AM)
Hi Gary, How is the new turf?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:27:13 AM)
Hi JimC...I will be able to answer that better for you next week after getting a good look at it on Saturday.

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 11:29:58 AM)
Anthing new on Ronald Johnson? I don't think we can have too many DBs!

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:29:58 AM)
His brother, I understand, committed to Michigan State. But that's totally independant of what RJ will do. I'm guessing he will be at the OSU-MSU game...don't know that to be the case. I haven't heard anything good or bad about Johnson to be honest with you. There's an outside chance I could see him play next week also...don't know how next week will work out at this time.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:31:58 AM)
I'll be going to the MSU game next Saturday with Steve and I believe that Barksdale plays Friday afternoon so maybe I can look into a Friday night game to see Johnson or Taurian Washington if they play on Friday night. I don't know any of their schedules because we just confirmed for our MSU credentials yesterday. I will look into some combination of seeing those players though.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:34:05 AM)
that's a serious problem for us if Pitt goes and if Gonzo goes too we could really have issues next year. with schedule I say we are 10-2 losing to PSU and MI on road next year but if we lose both I say 9-3

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:34:05 AM)
Just bring on the next wave of players ohs...But yes it could be PSU and UM's year next season if they keep all their guys around. Mannigham has to stay one more year as does Derrick Williams. But Ohio State should be able to play defense with anyone next year so reload and bring it.

chuangtsu (Oct 5, 2006 11:37:57 AM)
How do you see our DB two deep next year? I know it is a little early, but I think it will be interesting to see how Coleman, Torrence, Clifford, and a rehab Anderson fit into the picture.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:37:57 AM)
Jenkins and Washington at the corners with Russell and JO at safeties. Then your looking at a combination of guys like Amos and Coleman and Checkwa and Clifford andTorrence and Oliver and whoever else they bring in. They'll be plenty of bodies to go around. Maybe Scott and even Allen will be in the mix!

islandjoe (Oct 5, 2006 11:44:07 AM)
I like the way Texas doesn't mess around. with recruits. They give a deadline or the're moving on.Thats what winning the NC does. Even though you may miss some high rated guys, if they think its all about them instead of team, they'll probably hurt you later anyway. Plus they get guys that are afrid to miss out. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:44:07 AM)
Hi islandjoe...Texas has their way and JT has his. JT lets the player and his parents know how important they are first and foremost. There is no pretense involved with JTwhen he's recruiting someone. He offers and actually tells you to take your time and look around to see what's out there. Different strokes for different folks. The parents love JT as much if not more than the kids. This season will help recruiting efforts tremendously going forward. JT has a master plan with recruiting and he executes it to the fullest.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:44:54 AM)
Again some questions are showing up after the answer.

ohs (Oct 5, 2006 11:47:00 AM)
I've not heard much about Checkwa or the safety from Cali whose dad played here, forget his name. are they going to be good?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:47:00 AM)
I forgot to mention Grant and Gant as well among the gluttaneous riches of talent. And maybe even Brandon Underwood might be in the mix. My homie Shaun Lane could be the next Antonio Smith...you never know!

numberone (Oct 5, 2006 11:51:02 AM)
I watched quite a bit of Clifford's videos I think it is ludricrous that he isn't a top 100 player and I believe he could see a lot of early playing time. Have you seen him in person and how do you rate him?

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:51:02 AM)
Hi numberone...tell that to the Scout.com people. I've seen him in person three times now and I really like him. Tremendous skills on defense. I haven't really considered him as a receiver so I can't comment there. Colerain has shut out four of their six opponents and in week one against Mason, they had them shut out when Mason scored two times in the last two minutes against the backups. So I'm guessing the starters only gave up 7 points at the most this year and I don't know how that 7 was scored. Ridiculous! Clifford is a stud and they have some good young talent on that unit also. A couple of their good juniors might be a tad undersized but they can play football.

GaryHousteau (Oct 5, 2006 11:53:46 AM)
Guys I'm going to call it a wrap after that last question. I apologize for some of the early problems with the admin but it seems to have worked out in the end. Thanks to everyone for participating in the chat and also for reading it at a later time. Any comments or questions can always be sent to me at gh2sports@zoominternet.net and I'll be happy to responds accordingly. Enjoy a high school game on Friday and a big Buckeye win on Saturday. Should be nice weather this weekend. Go Bucks!
