Helwagen Chat: Oct. 13 Archive

Here are excerpts from Friday's Chat session with Bucknuts.com editor Steve Helwagen. He conducts these Chat sessions each week for Bucknuts subscribers. NevadaBuck will host a Chat at 1 p.m. Monday. Click here for more.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 11:49:37 AM)
Does it seem to you that Andre Amos is starting to get on the field more? I just think that he is going to be great!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:50:27 AM)
Amos is a ballplayer. I like him a lot. Great problem they seem to have with so many guys who look like they can play. Everybody remembers how he helped contain Manningham in the Ohio all-star game in 2005. I like him a lot.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 11:51:32 AM)
I think I told you in one of our earlier chats that D. Worthington would be a DT (I just said it would happen next year!).

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 11:51:35 AM)
What about putting L. Wilson at DT?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:52:45 AM)
How prophetic you were on Worthington. They were hoping to get through this year, I am sure, with Pitcock and Patterson. But David was dinged up last week. I don't know if Doug has played at all this season, so we'll see if he gets in there.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:53:16 AM)
Wilson, hard to say. Rose seems to be a comer. Of course, they lose Richardson after this season. I doubt Wilson gets moved.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 11:53:25 AM)
Hi Steve, some of these chat hosts are pretty optimistic on the remaining recruits they feel we might get - ie - Lichtenfels says Martin, Anthony Davis, Brent, Barksdale, Scott etc.. I think if we closed with 1/2 of these I would be elated !!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:54:33 AM)
Yeah, they rarely get all the "top-name" talent you think they might. Martin, I hear, may seriously be considering ND as well now. I agree if they get 5-6 of the key 10 targets, that would be huge.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 11:54:43 AM)
Tim Schaefer - How far does experience go ? He has switched from D to O how many times ? How good can the guy really be with all the hopping around ? And he HAS NOT played well to date.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:55:21 AM)
Well, they think he's the best they have or Skinner or somebody else would be in there. They say Barton will be playing this week, so I imagine Rehring is at RG and everything else goes on like it should.

calibuck (Oct 13, 2006 11:55:45 AM)
Steve...who are the QB targets for 2008 and who is the likely commitment?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:56:36 AM)
Maybe Domonick Britt from Trotwood-Madison, although Bob says he needs to add some weight. I honestly don't know. You'd think by now a hotshot junior would be coming around. They definitely need one if they don't end up taking one this year.

buckeyeinsaline (Oct 13, 2006 11:56:41 AM)
Steve - We should know alot about Michigan after Saturday nights game at Penn State. I'm looking forward to this Saturday's games alot!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:57:17 AM)
Agreed. Florida, Michigan and OSU all face tough games this weekend. The ranks of the unbeaten will continue to be trimmed. It never works out with 5-6 unbeaten teams.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 11:57:22 AM)
Cold and rain for the game, does that make you a little nervous?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 11:59:10 AM)
Yes because in 2000 Drew Brees and Purdue went to MSU and they were terrible and MSU, which ended up 5-6, rolled them 30-10. Denied Purdue the outright title. It was a crappy day weather wise. The forecast now says high of 45 with a.m. rain. The game is at 3:30, so maybe it works out for them.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 11:59:24 AM)
What, if anything, are you hearing about the freshmen that are not getting on the field?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:00:17 PM)
Not all that much. They like what Gant has done and contemplated taking his RS off, but will make do for the time being. Henton is getting a lot of good comments. Tressel talks about the scout team players of the week each week, but I rarely follow it that closely.

buckeyeinsaline (Oct 13, 2006 12:00:28 PM)
Steve - When will Neveda Buck be back for a chat at Bucknuts? Would like an update from him.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:00:33 PM)
He Chats Monday at 1

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:01:05 PM)
He usually has all the inside poop, doesn't he? He got me when he posted on the public practice and knew more about what happened than I did ... and I was there and he obviously wasn't.

frostbuck (Oct 13, 2006 12:01:18 PM)
Hi Steve its to cold and windy and wet to play golf so I thought I would stop in. Anyway with all the talent JT has and is getting seems like JT is starting to really put together an elite football program that will compete for the NC on a regular basis, your thoughts?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:02:12 PM)
It seems like it. But let's not be fooled into expecting 12-0 or 11-1 every year. This game is just too competitive. The key is you need a great one at QB to do that. They've been lucky with Krenzel and Smith. Who is next? We shall see, won't we.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:02:18 PM)
Did you see Clifford is now a 5* according to Scout ? Should Evege be higher IYO ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:03:37 PM)
Good to see for Clifford. They say Lemming also likes him, so maybe that helps his A-A game cause (if he can still get in, I dunno). I'm not going to answer the Evege question. Most of the highlights I have seen have been him playing on offense. I need to see defense. I think Wayne-Centerville is tape delayed on ONN tonight, so I will Tivo that and get back to you on Evege.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:03:43 PM)
Who is the "must get" ohio recruit for 2008?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:03:59 PM)
Mike Adams, who they already may have (or close to it). After him, hmmm ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:05:11 PM)
Probably Brandon Moore from T-M or Kyle Rudolph from Elder at tight end, position of need I would say. Then, the Mooney guys (Zordich, McCarthy, Beachum) and Nathan Williams from Miami Trace.

buckeyeinsaline (Oct 13, 2006 12:05:18 PM)
Steve - Score prediction for the MSU game? Your on a roll....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:06:24 PM)
Little bit of a roll. I am 4-2 against the spread with Ohio State. My string was broken when they did not cover last week (although I think they could have scored 56 and settled for 35). I have it OSU 34, MSU 20 which would not be a cover if 14-1/2 is still the spread. Have not checked that since Tuesday.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:07:16 PM)
Some think I'm nuts to give MSU 20. But I think even without Trannon and Ringer, Stanton is still tough and Caulcrick is a load. They scored 31 in a half against ND (although that did include Ringer and Trannon), so we'll see.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:07:28 PM)
Please tell me that you are rooting for either USC or Florida to run the table. I think we handle either one!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:08:36 PM)
I think OSU, if they play like they did at Texas and Iowa, is a 10-point fave on everybody they could play, with the exception of Michigan. I'd say they'd be a 3 or 4 point fave on UM.

buckeyeinsaline (Oct 13, 2006 12:08:42 PM)
Steve - Word around Lansing is that many tickets available for this game. Buckeye fans could Red Out the MSU stadium.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:09:20 PM)
Well, it's a cold as hell, wind blowing day, so dress warmly. Understand why people would not want to sit outside and endure another poor showing by the home team (potentially).

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:09:34 PM)
Just think, what a difference a year makes. At the start of this year we were ALL very nervous about our DBs, and next year we will have quite a few young bucks to choose from! Wow!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:10:13 PM)
Yes, they have really come on in a short time. Sad about Russell. He's a gamer, for sure. But Jenkins, Washington, Amos, O'Neal and Coleman seem to be the real deal.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:10:22 PM)
Steve, I know that you don't want to expect 12-0 or 11-1 every year, but who do we possibly lose to next year. We don't play anybody and we will have a young defense and an offense that can run the ball (o-line and Wells, maybe Pitt). How can we lose more than 1?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:11:53 PM)
At Washington could be dicey but they lose their senior QB. Henne and Hart would be seniors at UM. PSU ought to have quite a few guys back, too. Those are 3 tough road games, I think you'd agree. Wisconsin and Purdue rotate back on, but OSU hosts UW (I believe). I'm with you the schedule isn't all that difficult, but OSU needs a winner at QB, too, or it could be 8-4.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:11:59 PM)
It's that time of the chat, have you heard any recruiting news that you can give us? Next recruit?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:12:59 PM)
Recruiting is quiet for now. As I said, I think Martin is starting to think more about ND (according to some rumblings), so that may not have been the slam dunk everybody thought. Maybe his time up there for the Stanford game swung it a bit for ND. ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:13:46 PM)
My count says OSU can take up to 20 this year (since Haw, Frost and Welch are gone), but I can't see more than 17 with just 9 scholarship juniors right now. They need to hold some spots for next year and next year's deserving senior walk-ons.

kahuna825 (Oct 13, 2006 12:13:56 PM)
With it cold and windy, do we have a repeat performance from the offense like the one game at PSU? Meaning that we will have problems throwing vertically and we may have to look to churn it out and short passing?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:14:22 PM)
Could be, I like OSU's scheme if that's the case. Michigan's receivers did a nice job with the screens against MSU getting 7 and 8 a clip.

ohs (Oct 13, 2006 12:14:26 PM)
do we get all 4 OLs next year?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:15:37 PM)
No, probably not. Those package deals sound great 18 months out, but rarely materialize as each kid grows and sees what all is out there for them. I think Adams is about 80 percent for OSU and Brewster is probably 60-40 OSU over Florida. Long will have several schools after him, so just keep your eyes and ears open there. Shugarts will be hard to get out of Texas.

ohs (Oct 13, 2006 12:15:42 PM)
should we be concerned about Patts knee for Mich?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:16:13 PM)
No, he could be back next week (as if he will be needed for the IU game none of you will be able to watch ... it will be like the old days).

ohs (Oct 13, 2006 12:16:40 PM)
who starts on the DT line next year? And has Abdallah been totally replaced by Worthington? what's wrong with abdallah?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:17:25 PM)
Tough call. Probably Denlinger and I honestly don't know. Abdallah and Larimore are the only other current alternatives. Worthington is moving in there and the Buckeyes desperately need Barksdale and Brent to replenish the stock there.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:17:32 PM)
I hate to say ANYTHING negative on CWells but do you see the explosion of Clarett in him. Seems to hesitate before hitting the holes. Pittman hits quick. Am I way off ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:18:31 PM)
I think Chris Wells is a 20 to 25-carry a game battering ram. He needs to be fed. We saw that at Iowa when he was trampling people and coming into his own. One carry here and one carry there will never let him maximize his potential.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:18:36 PM)
Any news on Manningham ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:18:56 PM)
Just what everybody else is hearing, probably out 3-4 weeks, most likely OK for Ohio State.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:20:23 PM)
Can you tell me a little more about Devon Torrence? We hear a lot about Clifford and Oliver but not much about Torrence.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:21:04 PM)
Who do you think we miss out on because of grades next year ? Elliott, Hines ? Jeremiah ? Did Brent already qualify with a 21 ACT ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:21:17 PM)
Sorry, chuangtsu's question first ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:22:17 PM)
Torrence is a great athlete, probably like 6-0 and 190, could be classified as a big corner. He could honestly play WR, RB, CB or safety -- like seven different spots -- at Ohio State. He seems to be a great kid. Bill Greene said he is being looked at mostly as a corner.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:23:58 PM)
Hicks, I'd hate to speculate on something like that. We know the three guys you mention have not been offered yet because of the grades situation. Whenever we start talking grades/admissions/etc., we NEVER have the full story. Kids never understand the full picture and OSU can't comment, either. I think one of the kids you mention may not get in because the position will be closed by the time they know.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:24:06 PM)
When do we see the three "starting" LBs separate themselves from the rest? -Other than Baby Animal.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:24:50 PM)
I don't know. They seem to be platooning Freeman and Terry now and the other spot is off the field for the nickel and then the few reps they get are split between Homan and Kerr. I imagine they'll just keep trucking with those rotations.

BuckeyeFanForLife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:25:03 PM)
which ones will be Buckeyes, Long, Adams, Suggarts, Brewster, D Allen, Barksdale, Martin, and Thompson?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:25:27 PM)
My guess: Adams, Brewster, Barksdale, Martin, others 50-50 or less.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:25:32 PM)
Who do you think is an in-state recruit we should be recruiting harder ? ie Wetterer ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:26:40 PM)
Wetterer just verbaled to MSU, so it doesn't seem like they'll be taking an instate OL. I think he got tired of waiting. I'm not sure there is anybody. They obviously don't like any of the OL (which is hard to believe in a state with 700 football playing high schools -- that's 3500 starting linemen and probably 2000 starters who are seniors).

BuckeyeFanForLife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:26:52 PM)
Do you think Kerr will be replaced by anyone by UM?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:27:37 PM)
It's not like he's playing 70 plays a game now. My guess is they are in nickel for 35 plays, he plays 15-20 and Homan plays 15-20. I'd say that's a non-issue and they will adjust in whatever direction they sit fit by the time that game arrives.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:28:00 PM)
I can't help but looks at the 'stars' for a player, but when you think that the stars are off so often is makes you wonder. Look at 2005: Robiskie (2), Laurinaitis (3), Russell (3), Jenkins (3), and then Wells (4), Lennix (4), O'Neal (5). Should I completely ignore the stars?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:28:40 PM)
Yeah, ignore them. They are just a guess what the recruiting experts see with the kids as 16- and 17-year-olds. No way to accurately predict who will make the biggest jump and be the best by the time they are 19-21.

BuckeyeJared (Oct 13, 2006 12:29:22 PM)
Other than complacency, what is our biggest obstacle to an undefeated record against UM?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:31:33 PM)
Man, that's a great question. My feeling is Michigan's run defense seems to be TOUGH. So if the Buckeyes can not establish the run (and my guess is you'll see more of Smith running that day out of the designed QB draws). Plus, the OSU defense has been lights out. Will that continue to be the case?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:31:56 PM)
But complacency is an issue. But UM also closes with 3 terrible teams as well before OSU, so that is one that cuts both ways.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:32:03 PM)
I kept hearing what a beast Homan was this summer, was it a case of him looking great for a freshmen, or is there just a lot of competition, the injury?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:32:40 PM)
The injury probably first. He kind of disappeared for 2-3 games there. He and Kerr each have 14 tackles. It's hard to make an impact when you're on the sideline and the scheme dictates a nickel back.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:32:55 PM)
Where are Lyons and Dukes?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:34:10 PM)
Well, they are obviously the 8th and 7th receivers, respectively. I have never seen Ohio State involve more than 4-5 receivers ever. Ginn, Gonzo, Robiskie, Hall, Hartline and Small are just better. That's all there is. Call it whatever you want -- dog house, Dukes' injury. The other guys are in and they are out.

AspenBuck (Oct 13, 2006 12:34:34 PM)
Does one of our linebackers, other than Animal Jr, step up to be an every down player. With all the shifting from 4-3 to Nickel seems like the same guy is very rarely on the field two plays in a row. How about next year?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:36:31 PM)
They have found a formula that works. I don't think that "get in a rhythm" thing matters. Guys have to play their roles and do their assignment. As long as they do that, they'll be fine. They have decided that Freeman needs to play in certain situations and Terry needs to play in others. Until that thinking changes, that is how it will be.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:36:41 PM)
What position will Clifford play?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:36:57 PM)
He is supposed to be a safety, though he could also play WR.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:37:02 PM)
I agree with Chuangsu on the stars * - Go back and look at Hawk's class !!! The studs were lower star players. Can't help but be caught up in it though

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:37:36 PM)
I think it is something to talk about, obviously. But when they get one good season of play out of Morris, Clarett and D'Andrea, well, draw your own conclusions.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:37:41 PM)
How many Buckeyes fans do you expect to be at MSU??

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:37:46 PM)
Probably 10,000 or more.

AspenBuck (Oct 13, 2006 12:38:08 PM)
Teddy appears to have the Chris Gamble disease on all punt returns...he knows he is headed for the league and doesn't want to get hurt. It is hard to destinguish any difference in their approach, dance around then crumble. It the past Teddy ran horizontally before attacking a verticle seam...will we ever see this again? If not, when does someone else get a chance...I realize he is getting kicked away from, he just isn'tmaking the most of this chances.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:08 PM)
No one else is getting a chance as long as he's healthy. I can assure you of that. Ginn has come close at least 2-3 times this year to breaking one. I agree, his timing has been off and he has been timid and indecisive at times. But that is his job until the day he leaves.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:19 PM)
What's with interior linemen wearing single digits ? I did not know it was allowed. If Rose goes to DT I guess that can happen because the MG from Duke is # 3 ....weird

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:28 PM)
Yep, I guess it could be that way.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:37 PM)
Grant seems to be coming along and I think he is getting better. -Seems like I see him around the ball more often. This is his first year in the program.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:51 PM)
yeah, I like Larry Grant. Big hitter, just needs seasoning at this level.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:39:54 PM)
What Juniors leave early?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:41:16 PM)
Ginn more than likely. Beyond that, who else could it be? Barton, Pittman, Gonzo or Gholston. Pitt is possible. I expect the others to be back.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:41:25 PM)
I totally agree with Aspen about Teddy not running veritcally on punt returns... its annoying... Let Gonzo or Small back there

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:41:29 PM)
I want Ginn and Small doing kick returns... Small is going to be a great!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:41:59 PM)
Glad we all agree on that. They don't want Small back there when a game is on the line because young guys fumble (not that Ted has been all that surehanded).

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:42:06 PM)
What will Michigan tickets go for $$$ ? Just think, #1 vs. #2 !!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:42:45 PM)
A broker told me he bought a pair of good seats for $700 each and plans to mark them at $1,200. If they are unbeaten it's probably $400 and up just to get in.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:42:55 PM)
At least we know that game will be on TV.

BuckeyeJared (Oct 13, 2006 12:43:03 PM)
What player who has been a little under the radar thus far that will make a big impact in the second half?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:44:11 PM)
Well, this figures to be a competitive game, then 4 laughers and Michigan. Maybe a second tier guy like a Hartline emerges. Like to see Beanie Wells get a couple 100-yard games in that 4-game stretch.

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:44:17 PM)
Your preference at this stage at TE ? I would like to see more of Ballard than a guy forced to move there.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:44:44 PM)
Agree, haven't hardly seen Ballard. Maybe it relates to practice. They haven't done much 2 TE.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:44:48 PM)
Will be get Davis or O'dowd?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:45:26 PM)
Need them in for a visit before we can say. Hard to believe O'Dowd will cross the country like that. Davis has Jenkins at OSU.

AspenBuck (Oct 13, 2006 12:45:32 PM)
I can't wait to see Jam O' buckle someones knees. I think this is the week...he appeared to be coming on last week and catching his speed. Do you like the development we are seeing from Jamario?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:46:03 PM)
Coach Haynes made the point that O'Neal just needs lots of reps to "get it." With Russell out, he is getting all the reps he can handle. He expects him to emerge.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:46:25 PM)
This is a ready made situation because Mitchell leaves and Russell will come back in 07 and just replace him, one would think.

chuangtsu (Oct 13, 2006 12:46:40 PM)
I think JT has done a good job at getting us back up to speed at LB? This year we only lose Kerr. We have Baby Animal, Grant, Terry, Freeman, Homan, Gibson, Johnson, Moeller. Not too bad.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:00 PM)
It is a great situation.

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:02 PM)
will Gibson play leo?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:11 PM)
He could, he's not real big (only 215 or so).

BuckeyeFanforlife00 (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:14 PM)
any other 2008 players to watch besides the Mooney kids and the OL?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:36 PM)
It's such a small class, the focus will be small. Even with the best players, OSU will have to be very picky.

AspenBuck (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:42 PM)
I always makes me nervous when you pull a "one sec" on us...I think there is going to be breaking news...bad news...being a Cleveland fan I guess it is just engrained in me...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:50 PM)
No, just had a call had to take (ha ha).

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:48:55 PM)
Any last blasts?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:49:01 PM)
I need to pack ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:49:06 PM)
My parka (ha ha).

Hicks74 (Oct 13, 2006 12:49:17 PM)
Whatever happened to CJ Peake ? Thanks for the chat , later !!!!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 13, 2006 12:49:55 PM)
He's at Trotwood and they've had a good year, maybe 7-2 or so. he has a few offers. I like him. Haven't seen him at OSU yet and that's a tell tale sign.
