NevadaBuck Chat: Oct. 16 Archive

Here are excerpts from Monday's Chat session with NevadaBuck. He conducts these Chat sessions each month for subscribers. He is due back on Mon., Nov. 20 -- two days after the pivotal Ohio State-Michigan game.

Royal Flush47 (Oct 16, 2006 9:46:09 AM)
NB -- Any chance Ohio State pulls off the "trifecta" at the Army All-American game with Anthony Davis, Joseph Barksdale, and Ben Martin?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:47:03 AM)
yes...I think we lead for all three right now(big lead for Martin and Barksdale)...I would like to see Big Ben commit prior to the game though...

ottobuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:47:29 AM)
I'm lucky enough to make the trip this weekend and worship(the time) at the SHOE rooting for our BUCKEYES! Any tailgating fun or other promotions I should know about! I got to see the Bucks in the SHOE in 2002 and look how things wotked out!!!!!

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:48:14 AM)
go to the Skull session and watch the players walk across to the stadium...then get in early and stay late and soak it all in....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 9:48:17 AM)
Just the Skull Session 2 hours before the noon kick

expresblfc (Oct 16, 2006 9:48:23 AM)
How much credit should the offense get for the defenses's great success this year.. i.e. not giving running teams a chance to really pound the ball.....

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:49:17 AM)
I think that is a key variable that is often overlooked(especially when you look at the scoring defense stat)..our offense is pretty prolific this year....we can virtually pass at will....

crazybuckfan40 (Oct 16, 2006 9:49:26 AM)
Not sure if he saw the first question of mine, but what about Wright's teammate Hankerson. Are we pushing for him hard or will he get left in the cold. Same ? for James Scott.

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:50:33 AM)
I dont get the feeling that we end up with Hankerson or Scott---but those are just my feelings....LOTS of great players to pick from...and I'm telling you right now, we are just about at the point where we are "choosing

mckbuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 9:50:38 AM)
Nevada and Steve - Any news about the game on Sat being broadcast on TV locally in OH?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:51:22 AM)
that would be news to me...ESPNU baby...sign up for $15/month and then just cancel after the game(on direct TV)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 9:51:24 AM)
No, ESPN does not care that most people can't see it. They are using this game as a bargaining chip to get Time Warner and others to take ESPNU. That's all it is, nothingmore and nothing less.

kleintime16 (Oct 16, 2006 9:51:34 AM)
What do you make of Howie Longs comments yesterday during the BCS rankings show. If you did not hear it he had pretty high praise of Tressel, best big game coach, great QB coach, etc etc, reading between the lines ... he holds OSU in high regards

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:52:28 AM)
Long===Buckeye 2008 OLine version that is....LOL....Howie is and has been a HUGE JT supporter.......

border (Oct 16, 2006 9:52:40 AM)
With all the LB's we have in the stable, and talk of Clifford and maybe Gant being headed in that direction, who ends up being on the field, or do we continue to platoon in coming seasons?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 9:52:53 AM)
Clifford as an LB? I have never heard that.

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:54:08 AM)
I think you mean Oliver as a Linebacker(which could happen, but is no sure thing)....keep an eye out for Spitler as well---he plays hard(as we all saw on Saturday)...Gibson, Johnson, Moeller--the train is rolling...

Royal Flush47 (Oct 16, 2006 9:54:18 AM)
If we get Allen and Wright, does James Scott get left out?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:55:14 AM)
I think Scott could get left out---I think his one chance would be to commit fast and hope they take I think we have a REAL REAL good shot at Wright--and a good shot at Allen

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 9:55:21 AM)
The freshmen who have played look very good. What specific information are you hearing about the frosh who appear to be redshirting?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:57:56 AM)
dont want to leave anyone out(so I will try to do this from memory and just hit the highpoints)...Gibson is going to be an animal, Connor and Browning will both be terrific linemen--Moeller is a tackling machine--Henton is SO polished----Larrimore is Tim Anderson reincarnated.......

expresblfc (Oct 16, 2006 9:58:11 AM)
Anychance you could make Bill Greene wear an Antonio Pittman jersey for the Michigan game in your suite? That would make my

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 9:58:14 AM)
Ha ha.

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 9:58:53 AM)
I actually have a Brutus the Buckeye Headpiece that Bill will wear everytime Pittman scores a that should be fun....LOL

Haagar (Oct 16, 2006 9:59:01 AM)
Nevada, any must get in state prospects, beside Martin?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:00:16 AM)
Martin would be the last piece to the puzzle(instate)....Im already counting Thomas as in....only other one would be Jeremiah(who I think gets his grades in order and joins the party)

border (Oct 16, 2006 10:00:21 AM)
who gets left out: Thomas, Morgan, Still, Martez Wilson?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:01:15 AM)
I don't have a good feeling about Morgan or Wilson...Thomas==Buckeye and Still==Buckeye

DantheMan (Oct 16, 2006 10:01:22 AM)
Is this DL better than the 2002 unit (Darien Scott was injured a lot that year but K. Peterson came on a the end big.)??

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:02:58 AM)
that's a tough one....because of Will Smith....he was SO dominant at defensive end...I would have to give the edge to 2002---but it was all know how I feel about the Mighty Quinn----but Will Smith was a freak of nature......

Royal Flush47 (Oct 16, 2006 10:03:06 AM)
Just based on talent (and not the amount of players in the class), could this year's recruiting class be coach Tressel's best at OSU?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:04:56 AM)
tough to say this early on.....JT's class with Zwick, Smith, Pitcock, Carpenter, Hawk, etc.. etc... etc... would have to go down in the record books as one of the best of all time--this one is very good---but has a ways to go to pass that one------

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:05:07 AM)
What does the staff think of Jamario's play in the past two games?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:06:16 AM)
the light has gone on....ONeal played VERY well against Michigan State---the light seems to have gone on...and he will have four more games to perfect his trade before the Michigan game----so he will be ready..

Guest (Oct 16, 2006 10:06:32 AM)
Is Rob Gronkowski still "in play" or has OSU moved on to 08 TEs?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:09:54 AM)
he's the only TE target that OSU is currently pursuing..and he is certainly in play...

Guest (Oct 16, 2006 10:10:02 AM)
What QB recruits have the attention of tOSU coaching staff for 2007 and beyond?

daplayers (Oct 16, 2006 10:10:09 AM)
How many "best evers" are on this current roster in your opinion? If any?? Pitcock-DT, Smith-QB, maybe Animal Jr.-MLB....

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:11:06 AM)
Smith at QB and Pitcock at DT are the "best evers" at their position---IMHO

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Oct 16, 2006 10:12:19 AM)
NevadaBuck - Thanks for your time today. Looking ahead at this weekend's game, what kind of numbers would you like to see each of Pittman, Smith, Ginn, Gonzales, M Wells and C Wells put up?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:13:26 AM)
I would really just like to see four "W's" and no injuries..nothing more and nothing less...would like to see Maurice break one to keep his chin up--he's a great kid whose struggling right now.....

LABuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:13:45 AM)
Hello Nevada, I hear some talk about if OSU & Mich are the only two undefeated teams left at the time they play and play the "game of the year" there could there be a rematch in AZ. I feel that short of the game ending on a bad call where the true outcome was left in doubt it will not happen. Your thoughts on this?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:14:38 AM)
as they said in Rocky.."aint going to be no rematch"...winner moves on, loser heads to the Rose Bowl(which is not a bad consolation prize)....

kleintime16 (Oct 16, 2006 10:15:05 AM)
Anything new to report on the recruiting front? And is the Nevadabuck 17-18-19 coming out soon?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:17:11 AM)
I will post my Final Recruiting targets pretty soon...but I've just been sitting back in awe of this OSU football team.....these are the "best of times"--I'm actually getting sad thinking that this season has to end at some point--this is a SPECIAL group of young men----no game closer than 17 points??? 7-0?? #1 in the country?? are you kidding me??? LOL

Royal Flush47 (Oct 16, 2006 10:17:27 AM)
If anyone believes what is on myspace, then JB Shugarts looks good for OSU....It just looks like Adams, Brewster, Long, and Shugarts genuinely want to have something special at OSU. Hopefully they find a great QB & RB to bring in with them!

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:19:47 AM)
as I posted above, OSU is entering into the "rare air"(along with USC) where we are pretty much "choosing" rather than "recruiting"---not in every case(obviously)--but we have are back at the top of the mountain....and there are a TON of guys who want to jump on board....think about it, what's not to like?? Coach--BEST Facilities--BEST Fans--Best

buckgrad (Oct 16, 2006 10:20:09 AM)
Nevada, of the 9 commits right now, which do you think makes the biggest impact next year?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:21:13 AM)
I think Clifford is ready for prime time---so if I had to pick it would be him. History would say that I will be wrong, and that it will probably be someone less heralded--but we will see

Buckguy108 (Oct 16, 2006 10:21:22 AM)
Any chance Iowa beats UM?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:22:55 AM)
the one and only chance would be if Tate goes quarterbacks have been like Kryptonite to Michigan's defense---and they haven't had to face on yet this year(Morelli is a statue)...but I think Michigan roles big......gotta love having them in the Horseshoe on the 18th

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:22:59 AM)
Doesn't matter if they do, OSU still has to win out to get the BCS title game bid, more than likely.

section22 (Oct 16, 2006 10:23:11 AM)
Henton throws a nice touch pass during pre-game warm ups. Looks like he'll be a player.

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:24:23 AM)
he's a smart kid....a much better passer than I thought he would be....runs when he needs to, but is not a "running quarterback"--he's a passer through and year will be a HUGE dropoff at this position--but will be fun to watch

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:24:43 AM)
Standing next to Troy he is almost 2 inches taller ... oh my.

bobcat84 (Oct 16, 2006 10:24:52 AM)
Should we "read" into the fact Anthony Davis doesn't have a visit scheduled yet? Is Hazel still actively pursuing?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:25:26 AM)
dont read anything into that...we are still pursuing...

mckbuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:25:35 AM)
Nevada - I know it's a little premature (since this wonderful season is only 1/2 over) but who do YOU think will be QB next season?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:26:36 AM)
smart people are saying Robbie....but I like Henton....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:26:53 AM)
Here's a familiar one ...

kleintime16 (Oct 16, 2006 10:26:56 AM)
Who's next?

zville (Oct 16, 2006 10:26:58 AM)
Nevada...sorry if you already mentioned it....but I'm curious who will be the next commit in your opinion??

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:27:42 AM)
I think Still will make his commitment public next(as he commited "silently" when he was out here)....

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:27:49 AM)
If The Game was this Saturday, what would the line be?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:27:55 AM)
Wow, good one

LV-Buckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:29:04 AM)
i say ostate -5.5

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:29:20 AM)
I would say OSU -4

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:29:25 AM)
I said OSU by 4 as well.

HH (Oct 16, 2006 10:29:33 AM)
What about J. Hines?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:03 AM)
This just in ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:16 AM)
OSU-Minnesota, we knew was 3:30, it will be on ESPNU

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:19 AM)
just kidding

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:23 AM)
It's on ABC

kleintime16 (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:28 AM)

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:31 AM)
HH...good to see you!!! I think Hines becomes a member of this class(once his academic standing is sorted out)

kleintime16 (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:34 AM)
damn steve ... you had me going

score7 (Oct 16, 2006 10:30:42 AM)
There is a wealth of talent at DL That said do you see Robert Rose getting more time than just mop up time

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:32:08 AM)
I think Rose is going to be a player--and it could be at DT(he's just so BIG)---but I think the guys in front of him just have more experience, and are playing at a high level right now...

nutz4bucks (Oct 16, 2006 10:32:23 AM)
nevada, how worried should we be with next years DL?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:33:30 AM)
worry about global warming or the Middle East situation or the OZone layer...but next year's dline will be fine....lots of guys to fill the spots(DE's sliding down, etc...) we will be fine

buck92 (Oct 16, 2006 10:34:39 AM)
With how well Pitcock has played the last couple of weeks it is certainly interesting to consider the Bucks depth situation at DT..Who is the answer next year? Rose as previously mentioned?? Larimore?? Barksdale??

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:36:23 AM)
Denlinger, Barrow, Worthington, Larrimore, Nader will all be in the mix. I dont think that it would be crazy to think that Wilson or Rose could end up down there as well. I would be surprised to see any true freshman make an impact down there.

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:36:29 AM)
Is Lawrence Wilson growing into a DT?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:37:19 AM)
he is looking more and more like a DT to me....that could be heretical to think that....but that is my opinion....

buckofive (Oct 16, 2006 10:37:29 AM)
Is tOSU the only team better than scUM this year?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:38:35 AM)
IMHO....yes,and I think we are the best team in the country. I will post here and now, that I don't think the Michigan game will be as close as some might think. We matchup very well against these guys.

Ostate (Oct 16, 2006 10:39:01 AM)
Who's the favorite in Vegas to play the Buckeyes? What a disappointment to play an average WVU team. We'll go from luckies in '02, to least interesting Championship matchup in BCS history!

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:40:17 AM)
its going to be WVA...I put that in my preseason prediction. they just don't play ANYBODY(except Louisville, at Morgantown)..they will get into the game by default....

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Oct 16, 2006 10:40:27 AM)
What is your prediction for the Indiana game? What is your "master lock" of the week?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:41:45 AM)
I think we win another snoozer....OSU 38--Indiana always, just root for good weather(or at least, not horrible weather..LOL)

LABuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:42:18 AM)
There is no doubt that in college football the QB position is the most important. They can carry a team and make an average team good or a good team great. With it being so difficult to tell how a QB will develope with the faster game I feel we should always have five QBs on the roster. If one transfers out because of lack of PT then you bring in an extra one to develope the following year. Do you feel we will bring in two next year since we won't take any this year? Your thoughts on how many QBs we should carry?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:43:33 AM)
I think we should have four quarterbacks on roster at all time(one per class) next year would do the trick.....

rbuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:43:41 AM)
Nevada, You're AWESOME. How are you friends with HERD?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:43:56 AM)
And is CC already making plans to be in C-bus on 11/18?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:44:34 AM)
knew him in Las Vegas.....Colin will be in C-bus on 11/18..he is back on the bandwagon

Royal Flush47 (Oct 16, 2006 10:44:56 AM)
I would love for Mario Manningham to catch a pass over the middle and have JO knock him into next november...UM's talk about how MM owns JO because of one high school game has got really old

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:45:43 AM)
MM will play--but I'd be surprised if he was 100%...

TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:45:59 AM)
If memory serves, only one downfield pass has been completed against us. Are the d-backs playing that well, or does the line's pass rush get the bulk of the credit?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:47:18 AM)
our defensive philosophy is to keep everything in front of we rarely get beat deep....and our defensive backfield is very talented in coverage

Poz79 (Oct 16, 2006 10:47:37 AM)
Think this is the offseason OSU loses Hazell or any other staff?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:48:22 AM)
this could be the year...tough to keep talented young guys around too long----as everyone wants to move up....

calbuck79 (Oct 16, 2006 10:48:39 AM)
Hey Nev-buck with Miami, fl State in disaray is OSU primed for a big haul of Florida speed DB and WR. It would seem to me any recruit heading to miam would have to reconsider given the situation with the program. Who do you see as the best Florida recruit on the bubble leaning to OSU?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:50:27 AM)
Wright would be at the top of my list. LOVE that kid. Not sure how I feel about the Miami situation--Coker is one of the good guys----Im not sure if Butch Davis coming back is good for OSU either.......kinda like the way I feel about LLLLLoyd up in Michigan--I like the fact that he's there...LOL

buckofive (Oct 16, 2006 10:50:36 AM)
Does Pittman, Gonzo, Ginn or anyone else leave early for the NFL?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:50:56 AM)
Ginn is gone. I would bet the others stay.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:50:59 AM)
How do you say this Nevada?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:51:05 AM)
Ginn == NFL Ha ha

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:51:25 AM)

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:52:37 AM)
one in a million......"So your saying that there's a chance???"--Jim Carrey in Dumb and Dumber....LOL....

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:52:58 AM)
I think Ginn is a Top 20 pick......

buckgrad (Oct 16, 2006 10:53:08 AM)
Nevada, do you think Pitcock has played himself into a top 10 pick? How about Troy in the late 1st round?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:53:49 AM)
Pitcock will go in the first round......Troy will be a first rounder as well....

mckbuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:54:07 AM)
Is everyone counting Boeckman out at QB next season?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:54:36 AM)
certainly not.....I think everyone is just guessing...truly....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:54:45 AM)
Lst question for NB ...

mckbuckeye (Oct 16, 2006 10:55:02 AM)

bobcat84 (Oct 16, 2006 10:55:07 AM)
How is David Patterson coming along?

nevadabuck (Oct 16, 2006 10:55:57 AM)
he could play...but he wont(IMHO) no need to rush him....was no tear--just a strain---I say he comes back for Minnesota at 100%.....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 16, 2006 10:56:46 AM)
