Gary - Will this ESPNU problem be fixed by next season???
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:03:06 AM)
Hi mckbuckeye....that's a question way beyond my knowledge of...Steve is always a good one to ask something like that to. Sorry!
mckbuckeye (Oct 20, 2006 10:03:43 AM)
Will there be any state wide coverage of OSU Basketball this year? I can't get channel 10 in my area. Any local Lima land stations picking up the games? Just far enough away from Lima not to get WBNS.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:03:43 AM)
Ditto last answer!
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:06:36 AM)
Ben Martin is in Columbus tonight and that's where I'm headed. His 3-5 La Salle Lancers take on Columbus De Sales. De Sales is D-III but are 7-1 on the campaign.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:07:57 AM)
Sorry for the late start again today...for those of you still with us please fire away with some questions now because I won't be on as long as usual today with my road trip to Columbus. I'm looking forward to getting to the field early so I can get some good pics of Martin while there's still some daylight.
Royal Flush47 (Oct 20, 2006 10:09:53 AM)
What recruits do you think will be convinced to be buckeyes after attending The Game?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:09:53 AM)
Hi Royal Flush...probably a few. I asked Barksdale for instance if he'll know his decision before the AA game and he said yes. He's taking his official visit to OSU for the Michigan game and I think he'll visit USU officially against Notre Dame the following week. Don't know about his LSU plans yet. Maybe Dionte Allen will be at the Michigan game. I'm sure, barring any playoff games, that most of the top guns will be there and they'll talk.
mckbuckeye (Oct 20, 2006 10:11:31 AM)
Is Ben going to move back to DE if he comes to OSU. I hear he isn't doing as well at LB.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:11:32 AM)
I sure hope so mckbuckeye. That really seems like his natural position with his length and his natural ability to come off the end. I'm looking forward to watching him play tonight. I'm sure he moved to LB just to help the team, but at 3-5 it might be time to go back to DE.
chas15 (Oct 20, 2006 10:14:14 AM)
Protecting Smith. Do you think that's a priority? Do you think the offense would be effective if Zwick was starting games? How would it be different?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:14:14 AM)
Hi chas...I sure do think Zwick would do a commendable job running this offense and that's why this team is so good. If there is an injury to Smith, God forbid, than JZ is more than capable. Zwick is certainly not the running threat that TS is but I'm sure he would handle the distribution of the ball rather well. I think he's handled the situation tremendously. I would not be surprised if he becomes a free agent with some team at the next level.
Royal Flush47 (Oct 20, 2006 10:17:31 AM)
How good of a shot do you think OSU has at changing Dionte Allen's committment?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:17:31 AM)
That's a tough question because I really can't get in his head and speak for him but taking everything that I've been told, including what he's actually said to me, I would put it close to 40 percent with an ejector boost if he attends the Michigan game. When you consider that Gant is already there and Washington is on his way, I just find it hard to believe that DA will go to FSU still even though he's verbally committed. He did commit officially before Washington so that could be an out for him possibly.
mckbuckeye (Oct 20, 2006 10:18:13 AM)
Gary - sent 2 posts are you there???
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:18:13 AM)
It takes a minute to get them and comment on them so please be patient! Thanks for your posts! Smile!
kleintime16 (Oct 20, 2006 10:20:58 AM)
Hey Gary - With Duane's updated list of possible commits, there are no G-Ville boys. With Rowell getting much praise as a possible candidate for next year, who else might show up?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:20:58 AM)
Hi kleintime...If Hines does not get offer, barring him being an academic casualty, I won't be the only person surprised...if you get my drift. In fact, I know it doesn't seem like Jefferson is the plans either but I wouldn't be so sure he won't get late consideration. Next year, it's Cordale Scott and Rowell right now. The Glenville staff likes Jermil Martin a whole lot for next year also.
chas15 (Oct 20, 2006 10:23:09 AM)
How real was Indiana's win against Iowa? 30+ point underdog to OSU, seems to say it was an Iowa collapse. I didn't see any of the game.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:23:10 AM)
Hi chas...I didn't see the game either but I have a hard time believing that Iowa didn't lose the game more than Indiana won it! The Hawks must have imploded for sure. The Bucks will win big on Saturday...will they cover? Well I'm going to say no this week but I won't be surprised if they do. They probably will.
bb1 (Oct 20, 2006 10:24:13 AM)
G Man, give us some good news on the Ben Martin front
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:24:13 AM)
Hi bb1...I hope to find out some tonight! We shall see!

Gary ... what does it take in losses to knock ND out of the BCS this year?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:25:37 AM)
Jbuck asked about ND and the BCS before he left...I'm guessing that ND will win out going into the USC game so they're likely to have only 2 loses at the most. One loss along the way to USC will surely do it.
mckbuckeye (Oct 20, 2006 10:27:36 AM)
Any news on Boeckman? I would like to see some of him this week!! I still think he may be the one to beat next year and ANY experience helps!
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:27:36 AM)
I assume Boeckman is game ready if he should get his number called against Indiana. As far as next year...I'll continue to go with Schoenhoft although you have to believe that Henton will get his chance sooner rather than later.
Royal Flush47 (Oct 20, 2006 10:30:47 AM)
With all the young talent currently on the team, the great recruiting class last year, this year, and the potential of next year's mother-load, do you think we are in the middle of an unprecendented 5-7 year run in OSU football history (starting with last year's BCS Bowl win)?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:30:47 AM)
I sure do Royal and it's only going to continue to get better. JT has surpassed all expectations that I personally had for him as the coach at this beloved university. YSU really had a great run in the '90's winning national titles in 91, 93, 94 and 97 and I would equate 2 national championships at this level in a 5 year span to what he did in that 7 year span. It's much harder to win a NC at this level even though there is a playoff at the I-AA level.
ohs (Oct 20, 2006 10:34:31 AM)
i usually like positive questions but i've been thinking that (to quote Def Leopard) its better for players to burn out than fade away. its better players who dont play like hoobler or haw transfer than take up space and then open up other scholies. Who are the dead wood on the team now. Spitler? Nader? Mitchum? That's harsh and they obviously have time to contribute. Just curious.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:34:31 AM)
Theoretically you are correct ohs and those things sort of find a way to work themselves out with attrition in one form or another. "Dead wood" isn't exactly the term I would use but feel free to use that term. As far as naming any players...I'll stay away from that also! Smile!
Hicks74 (Oct 20, 2006 10:38:53 AM)
Hi Gary , Your preference on Brent vs. Barksdale if we can only get one. I see Brent is rated higher.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:38:53 AM)
Hi Hicks74...after watching Barksdale last week I would have to think he is more of a project right now at DT. He actually didn't look too bad at OT. But I see him being coached up some at the next level and eventually becoming a solid player for a couple of years. He's big and he moves well for his size so that's more than half the battle. I can't really comment on Brent in the same manner. I really like aggressive DT's that make plays like Pitcock and Denlinger and even Larimore! Barksdale isn't there yet but I don't know that seeing him play one game in person is fair to him. I think Brent looks like he could be more in the Pitcock mold than Barksdale right now.

What's up Gary first time chatting. Just wonder if there is any talk of the LB from Lima, I know he has been to a few games this year unofficially?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:41:10 AM)
dirtdawg1 asked about the LB from Lima and I believe he's referring to Williams. He has been to a couple of Buckeye games this year and I try to say hello to him every time I see him. He has a nice frame but I think he can use a little more weight. He's built very similar to Jermale Hines. I'll continue to keep an eye on him this offseason.
chas15 (Oct 20, 2006 10:45:07 AM)
I keep expecting Mo Wells to explode in a game based on coaching comments and high school recruiting. Is he destined to be a Roy Hall - great contributor in practice and sometime in the game?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:45:07 AM)
Wow...I admire Roy Hall a lot so that sort of took me back there for a second. I guess it is what it is. Hall still has time to make a favorable impression at OSU before he leaves but he's a fantastic person nonetheless. I don't Wells personally but he was indeed highly touted when he came to Ohio State...much more so than Hall I would say. But I'm looking for Beanie to start putting together a few good games before I am with Mo Wells. Beanie is coming along slow and steady which is good, but I would love to see him have a 100 yard game no question...maybe a couple of them.
chas15 (Oct 20, 2006 10:49:15 AM)
Did OSU get the running recruits you would have wanted this year? Is there a Chris Wells on the charts for next year?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:49:15 AM)
Ohio State got Saine so that's all that matters this year. Danny Herron is a solid player who isn't ticketed for stardom like Chris Wells and Brandon Saine certainly are. I am in the minority here no question, but I firmly believe that Brandon Beachum could be the next great running back in Ohio. I also think DeVoe Torrence has the potential to be as well if he would play that position at the next level. Those two are really good looking prospects on both sides of the ball. I think Beachum is better on offense than he is on defense. He certainly is right now. The injuries have really slowed him down.
Hicks74 (Oct 20, 2006 10:52:39 AM)
Will Lyons redshirt ? He must be tired of the injuries. I would love to see him.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:52:39 AM)
I'm sure he'll use up whatever shirt he's able to meaning red or medical before he finally gives up. But he's close with Shaun Lane and Albert Dukes and I'll bet he'll at least stick it out that long if he continues to be haunted by injuries.
Kaiser21 (Oct 20, 2006 10:56:04 AM)
I'm so late so if these have been touched on I'll read the transcript. Martin(ND back in the mix?) How did he go from wanting to Verbal at the PSU game to ND being back in it. 2. How did Barksdale look in person? Dominant. The Real Deal? 3. What kind of shot do we have with Rojo? Allen?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:56:04 AM)
Hi Kaiser...better late than never! From what I'm hearing, and I have sources on both sides of the fence, I give the edge to OSU still despite the glowing comments about his ND visit. I would think he would be attending the OSU-Michigan game and maybe he'll stay in town and go to the Indiana game tomorrow. I'll talk to him about his official visits and everything I hope after the game tonight. At 3-5 I'm sure he won't be crushed if they lose to DeSales...
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 10:58:39 AM)
How did Barksdale look in person? I would say okay! Not dominant but okay. Being a former college noseguard myself I sort of seen some things that he did that told me he can still get much better on the defensive line. I pretty much watched him most of the game, instead of watching the game itself, and I thought he looked okay. He's got great size and he moves rather well. But he's got work to do to become better...
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:00:18 AM)
I think OSU has a solid shot with Allen. I wouldn't say that unless I was given some indication of the sort when I was up there last weekend. Both him and Washington were disappointed/upset after the loss and they got right on the bus to go home so I didn't speak with either of them...
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:01:54 AM)
I know that Rojo, as you say, is friends with Allen as well so you never know there. Right now I wouldn't guess that Ohio State is considered a viable option for him but his tune could also change if he comes to the OSU-Michigan game.
Guest (Oct 20, 2006 11:02:59 AM)
With the D-Line class we will pull this year and the O-Line call in '08, OSU should have dominating lines on both sides of the ball for many years to come!
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:02:59 AM)
Royal Flush chimmed in with this comment about the O and D-Lines in the future and I tend to agree him on that.
ohs (Oct 20, 2006 11:05:51 AM)
good insight on Barks. Gary, who do u think starts at DL next year? Dennlinger and Barrow, Vernon and Rose on edges?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:05:51 AM)
Both Larimore and even Worthington will be solid players at D-tackle next year. And I like Gholston and Rose on the edges. Does Rose make plays or what? Wilson is still there as well but it's going to be hard to keep Rose off the field. Denlinger is the for sure candidate at tackle.
Hicks74 (Oct 20, 2006 11:10:05 AM)
Gary, if Pittman leaves and Mo Wells still waiting to do SOMETHING do we need one more RB in this class ? CWells/Saine/Herron/Mo Wells ? I still would like Haw here just in case Pitt or CWells goes down.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:10:05 AM)
I think those four serve OSU well next year if Pittman doesn't return. I too would love to still have Haw on the roster but he did what he thought was best for him. I don't believe they take one...who would want to come with Beanie and Saine around for a few more years.
MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Oct 20, 2006 11:11:30 AM)
Gary - Your prediction for tomorrow's game?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:11:30 AM)
Not concerned with the outcome in the least. But for some reason my gut says OSU will not cover. Either way the good guys win big and the outcome will never be in question.
Hicks74 (Oct 20, 2006 11:15:02 AM)
With all of the attrition of grades (Welch, Underwood) to injuries (Lukens, D'Andrea) and to discontents (Haw/Hoobler) how are we STILL projected to take only 20 recruits ?!
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:15:02 AM)
The number usually thrown around has been 18 but I see a few more than that. Underwood was back on the field last week so he might still be around next year. Not sure how the final number will go but JT will usually leave 4 or 5 ships open. I think 20 would be a good number at the end.
Kaiser21 (Oct 20, 2006 11:18:03 AM)
We have around 7 or 8 slots left without having a DT or DE in the mix. What happens if Barksdale, Brent, Still, Thomas, Jeremiah, all want to commit, do we take all of them?
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:18:03 AM)
Lets go with Martin and Barksdale taking two. I think Brent is also in and Thomas. That's four. Then you have Still, Morgan and Jeremiah...I guess if any of those first four or five with Still don't come on board then the chances are there for the other two and whoever else.
GaryHousteau (Oct 20, 2006 11:21:36 AM)
Guys there still are a handful of questions but we got started late and I apologize that I have to end it here. I have to drive to Columbus and I want to get to the game early tonight. Tomorrow night after the Buckeye game I hope to catch Ed's and Moeller. Ed's, the team I picked to win D-I at the beginning of the year, could get severly hurt by a loss to my sleeper team, Moeller. I think Colerain could be the best team in the state right now and Glenville is still a contender as well. Have a great weekend. Thanks for your time with the chat and sorry I have to cut out early. Go Bucks!
