Duane, what are you hearing on Ben Martin? When do you think he will announce?
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:48:58 AM)
I am hearing the family still would prefer Notre Dame. LaSalle is split between Buckeye fans and Notre Dame fans. Martin is trying to avoid alot of this. I still think he picks Ohio State.
TheMinnesotaBuckeye (Oct 23, 2006 9:49:06 AM)
If you were the playcaller on Nov. 18, how would you attack Michigan's D?
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:51:13 AM)
Through the air. They are not a sound pass defense. They need pressure to be effective. Smith is such a mobile athlete that I think he can handle the pressure even if they do get penetration. I would also put pressure on their LBs to make plays. They are great at the line of scrimmage but not as good in space. Passes to the backs, screens and passes to the tight ends.
edbuck51 (Oct 23, 2006 9:51:21 AM)
Do you share Nevada's premise that the Bucks are more in the position now of deciding who they are going to let in rather than who can we get (culling)?
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:53:39 AM)
For the most part, yes. I think ego has alot to do with this. Some don't show it as openly but all the top athletes have egos. They need to feel wanted. How many kids commit and say the school they chose showed them the most "love" and got in on them early? I think more kids are impressed with an Ohio State offer than before. I would aagree with that.

I have no idea. I don't know why he didn't play last week.

Hello, Duane I know it is a little premature, but what are you hearing on antonio henton for next year. I hear he has all the mechanics to be a great qb. Will Tress actually start a rs freshman next year? Thanks.
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:55:19 AM)
You have to wonder if that hammy is still a problem. He has had no time off and those things only really heal with rest.
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:55:54 AM)
I have heard this. Boeckman or Schoenhoft will start the season as the starter but look for Henton to finish the year as the starter.
hondo (Oct 23, 2006 9:56:08 AM)
How much has this defense improved since the beginning of the year?
Duane (Oct 23, 2006 9:58:07 AM)
Alot. It is that simple. This is the #2 scoring defense. It is something like #15 in overall defense. It is better than Michigan by a long shot in passing defense. Top 3 in the country in turnover margin. On the field we are seeing a sounder defense play in and play out. Less than 100 yards rushing given up 2 games running.

How do you think our oline stacks up against scums dline?
Kirk (Oct 23, 2006 10:05:50 AM)
One moment folks, we are having a technical problem
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:09:39 AM)
Dominque Britt is having a great year with nearly 3000 yards through 8 games but outside of him there is nobody in state. They will want him at camp anyway so I think we see an offer at camp, if there is one.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:12:03 AM)
I think we have to look back to Texas and say that is the closest we have come to a defensive line that might be in the same category as Michigan. The line held its own. I think Michigans is better. I don't us running the ball very effectively. How we pass block will tell the tale. If the line can come out of this saying they held their own then the Buckeyes will be 12-0.
labuck (Oct 23, 2006 10:12:14 AM)
Duane, how many more players do we take in this class and how many schollies do we bank for next year?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:13:36 AM)
I see no more than 9 but I would think they try to keep it to 7. Steve added it up. We can take as many as 20 but that would leave 9 for next year. If we leave 4 on the table that means 13 at least for next year. A small class but certainly better than 9.
TIppsbucks (Oct 23, 2006 10:13:45 AM)
What is differnt this year besides being number one? It seems we are picking and choosing who we want! Rather than just hoping they will come to OSU. Seems like USC or Texas these days !
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:16:12 AM)
I think it is not just this year. I think it is the building process over the years under Jim Tressel to put the program back where it was with coach Hayes as one of those schools that every kid in the country wants to hear from. Being number one is just the icing on the cake. Look at GameDay. What is always the lead story? The number one team. That means the Buckeyes are getting so much airtime and that means showcasing the program.
oldballandchain (Oct 23, 2006 10:16:19 AM)
Duane! Your spending too much time with your Bucknuts friends! haha, better get used to that ol' buddy.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:16:44 AM)
Not going to happen. Not with my girl.
revbuck (Oct 23, 2006 10:16:53 AM)
Duane, when evaluating a high-school talent, how much consideration is given to the school size from which they come? Is there a way to quantify that?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:18:24 AM)
It is more about level of competition but that often means school size. It is always a big deal. There are many big fish in a small pond out there. I always look at who is on the other side of the ball when I evaluate a player.
Kaiser (Oct 23, 2006 10:18:29 AM)
Where was Roy Hall last week? Was that every discussed. Seemed to get normal reps this week, and he had a very good game against Iowa, but he was MIA at scUM St. Any reason why?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:19:59 AM)
I think backups are rewarded with playing time based on practice. it is a really good idea. It keeps kids working hard every week knowing they could get the call to play. I never heard anything about injury problems with Hall and I doubt it was discplinary.
DantheMan (Oct 23, 2006 10:20:04 AM)
Duane: IF...I repeat IF, OSU wins out this year and starts 8-0 next year, that would be an amazing 28 game winning streak. The first 8 games next year are all easy or at least winnable: YSU, Akron Washington, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, Kent State, Michigan State. Heady times...
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:21:14 AM)
I think it comes down to QB play next year. Even if Ginn and Pittman go there are talents getting reps this year. The defense brought 2 starters back this year. Next year they bring back 8. It could happen.
vocky (Oct 23, 2006 10:21:24 AM)
Duane, what are your predictions on who will leave early for the NFL this year. GInn?, Pittman?, Gonzo.

O'Neal is not making mistakes anymore. That is huge. He was a liability. Not making mistakes means he gets to stay on the field and learn. If he continued to make mistakes he would have had to come off.
bucks1 (Oct 23, 2006 10:23:32 AM)
Just joined. what happened on the third down punt after the downing punching penalty? The ref called to replay the down as second down. We ran one play, the second down, then punted on what was third down. Was there confusion with the refs or the staff?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:24:14 AM)
I do not recall what happened there.

Duane- What do you think our chances are with O'Dowd? Sounds to me like we are still heavily in the mix!
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:25:36 AM)
I have not been excited about O'Dowd since he started talking about USC. It is closer to home and once they get their hooks in a player it seems they get him. I know Nevada thinks we still have a shot. When it comes to O'Dowd I am from Missouri.
Flabuck (Oct 23, 2006 10:25:45 AM)
Duane several questions, I really thoght Homan would be playing alot more than he is, especially as poorly as Kerr has played, any reason that doesnt include his hammy?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:27:11 AM)
We are playing so much base nickle. Look at how much we are seeing 3 wide. So many teams are trying to cover slot receivers with LBs. We saw how badly that can hurt when we kept burning Iowa. They were absolutely not going to make the change to a base nickle and we killed them with it.
lharbers (Oct 23, 2006 10:27:18 AM)
Who's the next commit IYO?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:28:13 AM)
Homan and Kerr are the guys that sit in the base nickle. I think that would be different in the future with Homan but for now we go nickle.

Does Still project as an OL or DL? and considering if we land some other big time DL's would his status change?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:29:31 AM)
I don't get into that speculation. It causes too many problems.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:29:32 AM)
He is not an OL in my opinion. Way too athletic. I recruit him as a DE and let him grow into a DT. Love that kid and he will be a Buckeye.
wwt (Oct 23, 2006 10:29:57 AM)
Hey, what do I know. I can see why we might have trouble running between the tackles on UM, but what do you think about trying to run outside? Or do you think all running will be too tough against UM?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:31:23 AM)
I think they are going to be tough to run against period. Running wide cannot allow penetration. If that happens you are forced deep and lose yardage. Michigan gets a great push up front.
TIppsbucks (Oct 23, 2006 10:31:46 AM)
Just a quirky question. If there was new law in college football. Can only recruit in home state. Would OSU be top 5 school year in year out! We would miss are FL speed every once in awhile! LOL
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:32:37 AM)
As a top 5 state for recruiting that would likely be the truth.
rbuck (Oct 23, 2006 10:32:57 AM)
Duane, Do you agree with Nevada's assessment that this years D is better than last years?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:35:30 AM)
No. It is a different defense. I don't like the yardage given up, at least in the first 6 games. The last 2 we have seen the defense cut down on yards given up. We seem to get excited about bending but not breaking defenses. They scare me out of my little mind. Continuing to allow teams to get inside the 30 is a disaster waiting to happen. This is a big play defense. In that regard, interceptions, sacks, TFLs, yes, this defense is better.
hondo (Oct 23, 2006 10:35:41 AM)
If Ohio State played Michigan tomorrow who would win and how close would it be?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:37:09 AM)
I think the Buckeyes win but how much is something I think we need to wait on based on how much better Ohio State has looked the past 2 weeks on both sides of the ball. 2 weeks ago I would have called it closer than I would now. Who knows what we could look like in 3 weeks.
wwt (Oct 23, 2006 10:37:25 AM)
I haven't read everything, but I'm shocked there hasn't been more talk about the condition of the field. From up in C deck, it looked much worse than before they replaced it. With it being a cold week in Cols. this week, I wouldn't expect anything better this Saturday and only something worse in 3 weeks against UM. Can they turn this around by the UM game? I'd hate to see them have to play the game with the field being a factor.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:38:13 AM)
with 2 weeks away before the Michigan game they have time to work on it. Hope for decent weather.
edbuck51 (Oct 23, 2006 10:38:29 AM)
How would you evaluate the kicking so far this year. On kickoffs, place kicking and punting, have they gotten better, stayed the same, or dropped of a bit?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:40:55 AM)
I felt good about kicking until the last 2 games. We were consistently getting kicks into the end zone. None at MSU and the shanked EP bothers me, but he nailed a 51 yarder that would have been good from 61. Trappasso was better early in the year. He was booming them long and high. He could have been the player of the game versus Texas. Let me put it this way. I don't think the kicking game is going to cost us a game. I am not sure if it can win one for us either.
bucks1 (Oct 23, 2006 10:41:05 AM)
I love all the big wins, but worry that unlike the 2002 team, that this team is not "tested" with a couple close games. Hopefully, they will respond with positive results when they get in a game that is close down the stretch, be it scum or the nc game.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:42:31 AM)
I think this team has faced adversity at Texas and Iowa. On the road, early in the season and they walked away with clear cut wins against top 15 opponents. I am not worried about that.
oldballandchain (Oct 23, 2006 10:42:38 AM)
did you see UC's game last night? That d is looking good! and the facilities are marvelous. Think Dantonio will hang around and make something out of not much?

Nobody. Last year it was Derrell Johnson. Every year there seems to be one or 2. Not this year.

ryder (Oct 23, 2006 10:46:44 AM)
In regards to the defense I think the defense playing so much in nickel packages was JT's way of being conservative. I do think the last couple of weeks they are attacking more and have looked better against the run.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:48:38 AM)
They were still in base nickle in the last 2 games most of the time, which is when they held the oppositiion to less than 100 yards rushing.

Do you think it would be a shamockery for one of the Big East teams to be playing in Glendale this year?

I think leaving an undefeated Big East team out would finally show the BCS to be the mockery that it is.
Kaiser (Oct 23, 2006 10:50:20 AM)
Do you see the NCAA getting rid of the new clock rules next year. I think the rules are horrible, and there are better ways to shorten a game. I think the coaches are taking notice also, so I think there will be a push to make some changes with those horrible rules.

DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 10:54:29 AM)
I don't see any speed guys from anywhere. This is a lineman class. I think Davis is definitely a possible. I always said if Miami was out of the picture the Buckeyes stood a great chance. That has happened.

DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 11:02:44 AM)
It is now wait and see. Both are taking and/or setting up visits. I think Brett is definitely the Buckeyes to lose and I think Barskdale is a slight Buckeye lean. He seems to be very impresionable. He changes his mind. He said he was going to let that Ohio State visit float so it would be last then set up his visits aloowing USC to be last.
Kaiser (Oct 23, 2006 11:02:53 AM)
My bad. Nevada and I where "discussing" his analysis that Pitcock was the Best Ever DL to play at tOSU. I don't necessarily disagree, he's in the discussion, but I think Big Daddy was the Best ever at DT.
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 11:04:18 AM)
Big Daddy Wilkinson was the BEST DT to EVER play at the OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY. Tell Nevada to send me that bottle of scotch he was drinking before he told you that. He obviously can't handle it. Send it over to a real pro.

Our punt and kick off coverage scare me. It seems like everyone is out of control. What do you see as the cause of the breakdowns?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 11:05:53 AM)
I think it is young guys, for one, and the fact that they are doing whatever possible to earn more playing time. The lack of scholarships means there are alot of young guys out there. They are trying to make an impression.
Kirk (Oct 23, 2006 11:06:14 AM)

Duane: Clay & Hughes. Do we get one, both or no additional RB's?
DuaneLong (Oct 23, 2006 11:09:05 AM)
I have heard that in the end Clay is not going to get too close from home no matter what he is saying about all these far flung visits. I did not get a good feel for Hughes in his latest update. He seems to want to play early. I don't know if that is in the cards here. Saine is likely going to play because of the speed element. Hughes is in the Chris Wells mode but not as good so Hughes would likely sit.
