grimes (Oct 27, 2006 9:45:48 AM)
What's up? the bucks rankins of course!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:46:10 AM)
Yes, Ohio State is No. 1 in football and No. 4 in basketball. Amazing. Probably will be top 5 in women's bkb as well.

JimC (Oct 27, 2006 9:46:20 AM)
Hi Steve, Will the Field be replaced again (this season?)

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:47:16 AM)
No, I doubt it. What they have is what they have. Hopefully by Nov. 18, it will take hold. Just seemed real loose last week. Poor Nicol scored that long TD and the biggest problem was staying upright. Watch when he gets into the end zone and he slips.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 9:47:21 AM)
How would a loss to michigan affect troys heisman campaign?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:49:16 AM)
As long as he doesn't throw 3-4 picks, he ought to be OK. He's had such a great year. By then he should be looking at a 27-3 TD to INT ratio or thereabouts. I think he is OK. Eddie won it after the loss at Michigan in 1995.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 9:49:30 AM)
Can you explain to me why so many people think that Brady will be drafted so much higher than troy?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:51:14 AM)
Well, I don't profess to be a draft analyst. I don't know Brady's exact dimensions. He may be 6-3 or so. Maybe he has "the look" that pros want. I think they'll like that he's already spent 2 years with a "pro coach" with Weis. But I like Troy as well. He can make every throw a pro has to make and he has become a student of the game.

BucklivGa (Oct 27, 2006 9:51:18 AM)
Everyone keeps talking about Manningham but don't you feel Hart is the key for tOSU

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:52:18 AM)
Yes, probably so. We'll see how Manningham bounces back from the injury. You want Michigan to be at full strength so you leave no doubt and have no excuses. OSU can not stand back and let UM/Hart go for 140 yards and control the clock. That will spell defeat.

grimes (Oct 27, 2006 9:52:26 AM)
was minnie holding back last week - just saving it for the big game this week? Seems they have to better than that ---Buckeyes aways get there best game

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:54:22 AM)
No, they're just banged up and missing a lot of good people (Banks, Russell, Spaeth, etc.). When you're 0-4 in the Big Ten, it has to be hard to get out of bed to go play I-AA North Dakota State. Nobody cares. We say Minnesota gives OSU its best shot and they did last year. But they didn't in 95, 96, 98 and 02. When OSU is great, they usually bury Minnesota.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 9:54:30 AM)
What do you think our chances are of getting Dionte Allen to switch his commitment to OSU?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:56:12 AM)
He says he will visit Ohio State and Michigan, so those schools have a fighting chance. Just wait and see, I guess.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:56:40 AM)
Hope everybody is doing well ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:57:20 AM)
We are planning a live Bucknuts radio event for Fri., Nov. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon. It will be interactive as we take calls and have guests to preview The Game. Should be a lot of fun. Stay tuned for details on that.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 9:57:22 AM)
what are your expectations for us next season?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:57:29 AM)
Interesting you should ask ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 9:58:24 AM)
Ohio State will have 7 starters back on offense (if Ginn and Pittman return, Ginn being a big if and Pittman, at least for now, saying he'll be back). They'll have 5 starters back on defense and the 2 kickers back ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:00:27 AM)
My feeling is they have people lined up to step in at nearly every spot (Robiskie if Ted leaves, Wells if Pitt leaves, Homan at OLB, Washington at CB, Russell back in at safety, etc.). The three problem areas are QB (who will it be), the OL (2 openings) and the DL (3 openings). Schedule is OK with games at Washington, PSU, Purdue and Michigan. ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:00:51 AM)
My feeling is somewhere between 9-3 and 11-1 and in contention for the Big Ten title. Probably comes down to the last game.

ottobuck (Oct 27, 2006 10:01:09 AM)
With Jack dotting the "i", it seems right that the Minnisota golfer's are coming to town.I think we can hold them to even (ZERO)!What about you?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:02:07 AM)
I don't know. They had 570 yards last year against Ohio State and 31 points. I said 44-10. OSU is getting closer and closer to that shutout. They gave up 7 vs. MSU and 3 vs. Indiana. I can't see 0 this week. Maybe one of the next two, though.

natedog (Oct 27, 2006 10:04:15 AM)
Steve. We read somewhere that Buster Douglas dotted the "i" Say it aint so Stevo.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:04:58 AM)
Dave Biddle says he remembers that and he was there and saw it. Probably in the fall of 1990. He beat Tyson in Feb. and lost to Holyfield in the fall.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 10:05:05 AM)
I think center and QB and one DT will be the only real issues. I think the QB concern is not talent level but experience so that will diminish throughout the course of the season. I think the early part of our schedule sets up well and our D should be phenomenal. I think 10-2 is a good call with possible losses to mich and psu, but i dont see many other tough games.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:06:53 AM)
The other three nonconf games, Akron, Kent and YSU, all should be gimmes. But, yeah, I think 10-2 is doable.

grimes (Oct 27, 2006 10:07:09 AM)
Which is more likely in your opinion to encourage injury? The new field turf type turf or a poor natural grass turf. I ask this because I think the "give" of natural turf seems superior in most cases. On the other hand, I get the feeling that JT would like to use the stadium for multiple high school games as a recruiting tool. Might be a trade off -- more potential injury to the occational key player vs. possible a better recruiting tool.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:08:18 AM)
I'm not sure we have any kind of data to say which surface is better in terms of injury. My inclination is a great grass field would be best. But they can't seem to grow grass there (sits below the floodplain, stands on each side have been built so high they block the sun half the day, I don't know)....

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:10:05 AM)
Tressel has talked about getting the state playoffs at Ohio Stadium. That would be nice, but OHSAA is tied in with Canton-Massillon for a few more years. OSU had them before and it just wasn't a big deal to have 8,000 people in a 100,000 seat stadium. I dunno. I'd like it because I wouldn't have to drive 2 hours to see it.

Bhorse (Oct 27, 2006 10:10:47 AM)
How much of a factor is the weather going to be Sat. I see the rain is to have stopped but the wind could be a factor.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:12:49 AM)
The rain is supposed to taper off around noon and the game is at 3:30. Hey, it's November (almost) in Ohio. If Ohio State is going to run the table, the Buckeyes must be a team for all seasons. A little wind has never stopped them before. Just go to the ground game. Minnesota has been trampled several times this year.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:13:06 AM)
Feels like November out there today, that is for sure.

RXBUCK (Oct 27, 2006 10:13:10 AM)
When do you believe we will finally see Doug Worthington get some quality playing time?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:13:41 AM)
When he earns it in practice. Doug has had a long road back from his knee injury. Just be patient. When he's ready, they will play him.

mckbuckeye (Oct 27, 2006 10:14:53 AM)
Steve- Don't you think that it is very possible to go undefeated again next season with all that returns? QB is the big question mark but with Boeckman being here for his 4th season, Heaton and Schon. we have very capable replacements.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:16:48 AM)
It's possible, I guess. They had great teams in 95, 96 and 98 and didn't make it any of those years. Remains to be seen this year. My experience just tells me no, probably not. They have a great cast, no doubt. But a new QB is hard to overcome. They lost 4 games in 2004, remember? Not all of that was on the QBs, but some of it was, certainly.

BucklivGa (Oct 27, 2006 10:17:34 AM)
If one of the linebackers from last year could have returned who would have helped this year's unit the most?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:17:37 AM)
Ha ha ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:18:16 AM)
Hawk, I guess. That's the obvious answer. Laurinaitis has done well in the middle and Freeman/Terry have been pretty good. They've almost covered up for the other OLB spot at times.

ottobuck (Oct 27, 2006 10:18:22 AM)
Heard you radio broadcast this week, does Hines(?) get a look at QB?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:19:14 AM)
I doubt it. He and Kyle Jefferson keep showing up at OSU games as if there is a glimmer of hope there. I guess where there is a will there is a way. I have not watched him much as a QB. I need to study that and see if he is Big Ten caliber.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 10:20:06 AM)
Do you think we get major wright?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:21:03 AM)
OSU is in the top 5 with Florida, Georgia, Miami and USC. The Buckeyes have a shot. He will be in for the Nov. 18 weekend with Michigan.

mckbuckeye (Oct 27, 2006 10:21:18 AM)
Well anything is better than the old turf that used to be there. I played there in the HS state championships in 83 and almost needed skin grafts when the game was over!! New field turf looks to be the best answer!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:21:38 AM)
That surface was like a parking lot. I agree.

mckbuckeye (Oct 27, 2006 10:21:48 AM)
Steve - We had over 20,000 in the stands in 83 in Div. II. I think D 1 had more. I think it is a great tool for recruiting for kids and for most a dream come true to play in the Shoe!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:22:18 AM)
Yep, I could be persuaded. Anything to save the drive to Canton (ha ha). The poor Cincinnati people have to drive almost 4 hours to get there.

redondo (Oct 27, 2006 10:22:23 AM)
Steve - Jay Bilas says Wisconsin is the best basketball team in the Big Ten, yet the polls have OSU rated higher. Who's right?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:23:56 AM)
Depends on your point of view. In 1992, OSU had the better team for 3-4ths of the season. But the Fab Five grew up and beat them in the regional finals. I think today, he's right. U-Dub has Tucker and too much back. OSU has the freshmen, but Oden is out indefinitely. When he returns and as these guys grow and mature, they will be tough. I think they will look a lot more like No. 4 in late Feb. than they will in late Nov.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 10:24:18 AM)
How tall is taurian washington i think he is listed at 6 foot in the database but i thought i saw where gary said he is 6'2'' or so?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:25:11 AM)
I saw Taurian in person once last year and I just can't say. Let's call it 6-1 and split the difference. I think he only had 19 catches going into last week. His team does not rely on the pass, even with a good QB in Siller.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:25:20 AM)
Hi Steve - Checking out the stars on some of the 2002 class. I don't think I would worry as much about that in the future or put TOO much stock in it. Richardson 1 * . Mangold 1-*, Downing 2 *, Datish 3*, Sims 3, Penton 3 and Hawk 3* !!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:25:50 AM)
Yeah, the stars are just a guideline. I find it hard to believe they can be accurate about 2,000 kids a year. They do the best they can.

grimes (Oct 27, 2006 10:26:27 AM)
Can we hope everything is "high class" this year for the game. No drug dogs or body cavity searches etc. If jt and tOSU are trying to project a good image then that stuff has got to stop. And I don't mean busting a 70 year old tail gater with a beer in in his hand.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:28:54 AM)
I agree, it is absolutely amazing the things that have go on in and around OSU game days the last few years. Somebody's priorities are completely out of whack. They need a police presence and they need to hone in the people causing problems who are drunk and disorderly and who litter, etc. It's hard to legislate or dictate civility. With the game at 3:30 this year, hopefully Michigan can be properly searched at its hotel. The dogs were sniffing for bombs, not drugs ...

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:30:08 AM)
Tressel got an earful from Carr before the game. He made light of it afterwards saying they needed to get new dogs because Michigan got ahead 10-0 or 14-0 (pretty witty remark). Not sure how he would feel if the shoe was on the other foot, though. There is a way things should be done.

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy24 (Oct 27, 2006 10:30:19 AM)
If you could bring back one player that either graduated or left early after last season, who would it be and why?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:30:53 AM)
I honestly don't know. Maybe Hawk, I guess. Maybe Mangold to play center. They have not missed Holmes. Whitner was awfully good, too.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:30:56 AM)
Steve , do you think Troy takes off more vs Michigan to really keep them on their heels ? Hope so. No need for that now.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:31:35 AM)
Yes, I think that will be the Tyree wrinkle this year. They will spread the field and have him run to try and soften UM a bit. Makes sense. OSU will need yards on the ground somehow, even if they are "cheap" yards like that.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:31:48 AM)
Steve, I cannot see O'Dowd coming. Anything new on Anthony Davis ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:32:24 AM)
O'Dowd is visiting for the Michigan game, maybe that impacts him. I dunno. Davis' team at Piscataway usually goes deep into the playoffs, so it may be a mid-Dec. visit or January for him.

JimC (Oct 27, 2006 10:32:28 AM)
Kudos on the Buckeye Blitz segment. That's a really good show!!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:33:24 AM)
Thanks a lot! I enjoy doing that with Dave Chudowsky. We try and have some fun with it. We came up with the Stevie Awards at midseason. It's nice that our friends at ONN give us that platform each week.

teddybg (Oct 27, 2006 10:33:32 AM)
When it is all said and done how do you think the careers of Small and Ginn will compare?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:35:43 AM)
Ginn will have had a much better freshman year (ha ha). In some ways, they are intertwined. If Ginn leaves, Small gets more of a chance to show what he can do next year. Small (or anybody) would have to go a long way to match up with what Ted has done. He has so many long TDs and those can not be understated. Those turn field position and the psyche of the teams so quickly.

LABS (Oct 27, 2006 10:36:04 AM)
Why do people assume PSU will be all that good next year. I'm not sure Morelli will ever be outstanding . They lose POluzny and perhaps Morgam will go.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:37:23 AM)
Well, Penn State is always going to be respectable. They still have Derrick Williams, for whatever that is worth. They'll be decent again next year and State College is always a tough, tough place to play.

grimes (Oct 27, 2006 10:40:47 AM)
do you expect Beanie to "grow" as a sophmore like say Pittman did. Major improvement after a year for him.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:42:06 AM)
Yes, I think he is getting a small taste of it this year. Pittman said publicly Tuesday he expects to return. It will be official when the entry deadline passes in mid-January. But, yeah, I think Wells is positioned to have a great career at OSU.

paulleec (Oct 27, 2006 10:42:12 AM)
.Steve, Do you see the added stunts and scheming by the defense as a future trend or mostly to pressure a young Indiana QB?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:43:15 AM)
Yes, I think it was a new wrinkle with the CB blitzes as well to confuse the young QB. I think they felt with Lewis' athletic ability they needed a nimble CB like Smith tracking him. Worked well. This defense has shown they can do it all.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:43:18 AM)
Steve , has Underwood seen the field yet this year ? I guess Sirjo is officially gone eh ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:43:44 AM)
Wells is gone. Underwood saw some token action in a couple games. He joined them so late most of the jobs were sewn up.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:46:02 AM)
At least until the Michigan game do you see Worthington still getting significant PT to groom him at DT even with Patterson back ? May have to add a few lbs. next year.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:46:17 AM)
That would be nice. He just needs to play.

grimes (Oct 27, 2006 10:46:40 AM)
they QB comments that Mich Defense is better than OSU's seem to be maybe related more to the Punishing aspect on the QB. After seeing Mich a couple times they seem to put more of a game changing injury type smack on the QB than tOsu Defense who seem to jsut tackle more. just my impression. Hope they don't blindside Troy!

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:49:25 AM)
Troy is awfully slippery. He doesn't take a lot of square hits. But I think you do have to be concerned. Michigan has put 2 QBs from PSU and Tate from Iowa out this year.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:49:35 AM)
Pass protection will need to be at its best.

rbuck (Oct 27, 2006 10:49:44 AM)
Steve, When do you see Oden hitting the court? If he go the screws out a week ago, shouldn't he be ready about 3-4 weeks from now? I feel like even that is a safe bet.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:51:16 AM)
Two weeks ago, Matta said it would be Jan. 1. He will do interviews again on Tuesday in preparation for the exhibition Wed. Maybe he'll have an update then. My feeling is keep an open mind and be able when/if Oden ever does suit up for the Buckeyes.

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:51:21 AM)
Has Ballard officially moved ahead of Brandon Smith as the backup TE ?

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:51:47 AM)
It would seem. Ballard is in for the 2-TE sets. Haven't seen much of Smith lately. Things change over the course of the year.

SteveHelwagen (Oct 27, 2006 10:51:55 AM)
Anything else today???????

Hicks74 (Oct 27, 2006 10:52:34 AM)
