Housteau Chat Archive: 11/3

Bucknuts staffer Gary Housteau stopped by Friday afternoon for his scheduled members-only chat. We have a transcript posted below.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:46:12 AM)
Good afternoon to all of you Bucknuts out there!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:46:35 AM)
My game is in Toledo tonight...where else is there?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:46:47 AM)
Dane versus Saine!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:47:02 AM)
What a game!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:47:12 AM)
I hope it don't rain!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:47:37 AM)
I'm so jacked I can't explain!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:47:58 AM)
in about to go insane!

ohs (Nov 3, 2006 9:49:26 AM)
Good afternoon. I think the WV loss increases chance of repeat if we lose to SCUM

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:49:26 AM)
Hi ohs...WVU is terrible! They don't deserve to be a top-ranked team! I'm sorry! All the hype for what? But I highly doubt there will be a repeat of the OSU-MI game for the national championship.

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 9:50:27 AM)
Hi Gary - Dave Biddle mentioned that Joseph Barksdale is "close". Do you agree ?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:50:27 AM)
Hi Hicks...I did my homework and just spoke to Joe not more than a half hour ago! Since you're asking...yes!

JimC (Nov 3, 2006 9:52:44 AM)
Hi Gary, How is Boone and why is it so secretive?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:52:44 AM)
Hi JimC...injuries are always kept on the down low for the most part...I've heard the same thing Dave did from a different source I'm guessing and I concur that it's a shoulder...at least that's the word I was told. I don't know the degree of seriousness of it however. I'll check with some of my peeps to see if it's serious or not.

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 9:54:59 AM)
Gary - Can you see Ben Martin being a outside LB ala Ted Hendricks ? Interesting move by his HS Coach. He must have the ability to rush/drop in coverage etc. Haven't seen another Stork !

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:54:59 AM)
Good question Hicks...when I saw Martin play in Columbus, someone who knows told me that if Ben indeed goes to Ohio State that he will likely play the same role as Bobby Carpenter! Ben's really good at getting to the QB....really good. I think it's a gift he has! He looks much more comfortable going forward than dropping into coverage.

ohs (Nov 3, 2006 9:58:01 AM)
good news. i thought Joe was going to announce at All AM game in Jan? Are u saying he will announce before that and we get him?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 9:58:01 AM)
No ohs...he will certainly make it official at that time. I'm certain he will not confirm it publically. He's still trying to set up an LSU visit and he is not sure if he is going to USC. ND is out of the picture. How he will keep it a secret?...don't know! Will he end up at OSU? As one fine sage as already put it.... Barksdale====== you fill in the blank!

edbuck51 (Nov 3, 2006 10:01:16 AM)
It doesn't look like there is a whole lot going on recruiting wise for the Bucks any more this year in Northeast Ohio. Are you working on next year, or just enjoying the playoffs?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:01:16 AM)
Hi ed....I certainly wouldn't take Jermale Hines off the table. Watch what he does in the playoffs. This kid is a fantastic football player. And as long as someone who knows keeps saying the name Kyle Jefferson, I will be interested. But yes I am looking at next year already and I intend to enjoy the playoffs very much. There is one other senior name in NE Ohio I'm still hearing about but until I don't know if he is still potentially in play or not.

ohs (Nov 3, 2006 10:05:04 AM)
when will martin commit and do we definitely get him?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:05:04 AM)
I don't know when Martin will commit. Does OSU get him? Nevada says yes. Martin says he's still praying on it. And some of my ND people still believe they're in play. Everybody I talked to at the La Salle-DeSales game wants Martin to go to OSU and they're pulling for him to go there...but not one person I talked to said that he's already decided. I have other sources than Nevada that are confident that he's a Buckeye already. That's pretty much in a nutshell....all I know! In the end. I think yes he will be a Buckeye. Too many things are pointing in that direction at this time.

edbuck51 (Nov 3, 2006 10:07:34 AM)
Did you catch the WVU/Louisville game last night? Do you think that caliber of ball is deserving of a shot at the National Title?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:07:34 AM)
I watched it while I was doing something else and heck no their caliber of ball is not deserving of a national title shot. Especially WVU. And now they're talking about Rutgers. I feel like Allen Iverson....We're talking about Rutgers! Give me a freaking break!

JimC (Nov 3, 2006 10:08:49 AM)
Are the days of natural grass at the shoe over? I live in Lakewood, and we have had an outbreak of Infections that may be linked to the artificial Turf. I hope we keep the real grass.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:08:49 AM)
Yes...I was told yesterday that turf will be put in after the season. I know that's a drastic move for this universtiy to take but I believe this season pushed it over the edge!

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 10:12:56 AM)
The Barksdale "yes" does the heart good. Does he get force fed in a rotation of Denlinger, Worthington, Larimore. We need some legit DT's and the converted DE's are iffy, no ?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:12:56 AM)
Hicks I saw JB play this year and although I liked some of what I saw...I believe he is a project no question. If he gets anywhere near PT next year I'll be surprised. That being said I love Denlinger and Larimore as my guys for next year if that's how things turn out. Worthington looks like DT is in his future and maybe Barrow will move down for good. That's four solid candidates right there. But I'm not so sure that Barksdale will see the field next year. He could because he's got the physical size already but I think his game needs some fine tuning. And although he doesn't want to hear about offense...he could be a solid performer on that side of the ball if you ask me.

ottobuck (Nov 3, 2006 10:15:40 AM)
New look on the home page, I like! What's the weather going to be for the game?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:15:40 AM)
Hi ottobuck... I sort of like it too. The photos are bigger so that's always nice...smile! I'm assuming the game you're referring to is OSU and Illinois...I imagine cold and windy. I pretty much fear being in Toledo tonight and Cleveland tomorrow. I can hold my own in the cold (lol) but I still hate it nonetheless. Dane against Sane...what a first round game that is.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:17:36 AM)
Remember TCC is the defending state champion but their QB has been injured the past two weeks and Sanzenbacher has had to fill in. That hurst their chances. He played almost the whole game at QB two weeks ago, other than the first series. It shows you how good of an athlete he is but it probably hurts them in two positions.

edbuck51 (Nov 3, 2006 10:21:21 AM)
Like a lot of us, I seem to recall you were in the Zwick camp early on. Like a lot of us I'm sure you are impressed with Troy's transformation. What are your thoughs on #10 these days?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:21:21 AM)
You are correct I was in the Zwick camp early on and you are correct that I am impressed with Troy's transformation. Why he waited until midway through his fourth year to get serious about film study is beyond me. I still think JZ is a more than serviceable QB and his strength is distributing the football, something that works well in this offense. I think JZ has a life beyond Ohio State and I know that is one of his major motivating factors at this time beyond being a quality backup right now. I've known the Zwick family since Jared Zwick played at YSU for JT, as a backup QB for the most part, beginning in 1996.

Guest (Nov 3, 2006 10:22:01 AM)
The line @ illinois only -24 1/2, illinois lost to indiana whom we beat by 40, and our defense is playing the best it has all year. Think the bucks will cover?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:22:01 AM)
Buckguy15 asked if I think the Bucks will cover before he left the chat...Is the Pope Catholic?

grimes (Nov 3, 2006 10:25:40 AM)
just got in sorrry if this has been asked. How could anybody imagine the two teams we saw last night playing on a national champ level with the tOSU, Mich, USC's ,TX of the world? They might have a good game and upset someebody of quality but those did not look to be championship contenders. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:25:40 AM)
Hi grimes...my sentiments exactly. I guess somebody has to have a good record in that conference? I don't have a big a gripe with Louisville, without Bush, as I do with WVU. Are you kidding me. And Rutgers? We're talking about Rutgers? But neither team from last night has any kind of a quality defense and OSU would shut down WVU's offense so fast their head would spin!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:25:51 AM)
We're talking about Rutgers!

edbuck51 (Nov 3, 2006 10:27:46 AM)
How much fun is it watching Mr. Hartline come of age?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:27:46 AM)
Love everything about the kid ed. He walks the walk and talks the talk. I stayed real close with Brian during his injury and I was amazed about how confident he always was in his rehabilitation. He would cheer me up! Then he wins two state hurdling championships and now he's coming into his own as a football player. Great kid! Good for him!

grimes (Nov 3, 2006 10:29:34 AM)
saine vs sansenbacher tonight ! should be a good game. surprised that big of a match up this early in the playoffs?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:29:34 AM)
That should be a regional final type of game but Piqua didn't pick up a lot of computer points along the way. Losing to Northmont...a D-I...school...both lossed to D-I schools didn't help obviously. I still haven't determined in my own mind how I think that game will play out tonight. I'll be going over and over it on my drive on turnpike.

rbuck (Nov 3, 2006 10:30:34 AM)
From watching that game, I'd put those two teams on the same level as Iowa, and I think Iowa is probably better than both of them.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:30:34 AM)
I have to agree rbuck...and that might be a generous assessment.

7-11 (Nov 3, 2006 10:33:15 AM)
I am loving what i am seeing. I dont have that gloom over me leading up to the biggest game in CFB, like we did with coop but do you see our defence giving big yards to scum. We have given up some yards on the ground to different backs. My concern is Biakbutka nighmares agiain. He will run with a vengence.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:33:15 AM)
Hi 7-11...(Ginn-Gonzo open all day)...MM is the only way that Michigan even has a chance against Ohio State. Period. Seriously! I've said all along, from the Bucknuts preview magazine on, and I haven't wavered in the least, that this is a special wire-to-wire season and we should all just sit back and enjoy the ride.

edbuck51 (Nov 3, 2006 10:35:55 AM)
What's your feeling field turf? I know a lot of progress has been made in the last ten years.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:35:55 AM)
A lot of progress has been made over the last 10 years. YSU used to have the very hard artificial turf for the longest time when JT coached there. It's almost like artifical grass now. I'm sure OSU will use the best of the best surfaces out there. And with the HS playoffs just another 2 or 3 years away from the next contract, I'm almost sure we will see the 6 state title games in Ohio Stadium in the near future...which is a sad thing for me to see!

mckbuckeye (Nov 3, 2006 10:36:51 AM)
Gary - Late in. Did you see the Big East game last night? I don't think either of those teams would be within 3 TD's of OSU. Our D would limit their O and there is no way they stop our O!

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:36:51 AM)
Hi mckbuckeye...you'll have to read the transcript later...I've already addressed that and I totally agree with your assessment.

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 10:38:58 AM)
Gary - I noticed a lot of prep schoolers listed as prospects this year that were good recruits last year. Mark Jackson, Lesean McCoy, Chichester. And whatever happened to Gwaltney ?! Would the Bucks have an interest ?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:38:58 AM)
I saw Mark Jackson at the OSU game last week. Why wouldn't any of these guys want to go to OSU? I know Jackson would like to and his grades are good to go. I don't think Gwaltney would be invited here however. I believe he's up at some college in NY now but I don't know that for certain.

ohs (Nov 3, 2006 10:42:42 AM)
i'm concerned with all these great # of players available that we took boom and sanzenbacher? should held out for clay and hughes? and florida speedies?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:42:42 AM)
I was told of the Clay and Olgesby combination a while ago and I don't know what Hughes situation is right now to be honest with you. I know people from where I'm from who question Danny Herron going to OSU as well but I know he's a tough kid who's played through injuries this year even though he will not publicly admit to it. And Sanzenbacher is a playmaker...don't sell this kid short at all. JT don't offer kids early for nothing...he's seen things they looking for in both of these guys no question. They're both track kids also. I'll take good Ohio players over anyone else any day of the week.

buckmark (Nov 3, 2006 10:47:01 AM)
What's your take on the Glenville - Iggy game this weekend? Seems like a tough matchup for Glenville to get in the first round of the playoffs.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:47:01 AM)
I think Glenville is a sleeping giant right now. I really don't mean to insult or disrespect a great program like St. Ignatius and I think Chuck Kyle is fantastic but I don't see this year's version of the Wildcats even beings near some of the teams in the recent seasons that haven't done well. But Glenville is Glenville and if the opportunity to beat themselves comes about they're likely to find it. They've played in the horrible Senate League for the past seven weeks so I know they're going to make mistake after mistake against Iggy and if Iggy can take advantage of the mistakes, they could win the game. I think Glenville has the better talent and the better team and the longer they keep playing in the postseason the better they will become. If any team in the north can give Ed's a game it's Glenville. Ed's vs. Colerain in the state title game.

AspenBuck (Nov 3, 2006 10:48:32 AM)
Iggy vs Glenville...prediction? I say Glenville is going down (Go Cats!)

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:48:32 AM)
Hi aspenbuck...I'll take the Tarblooders...meet me at Choices before the game for a friendly wager! But I'm sure not too many of you are surprised that I would pick Glenville!

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 10:51:38 AM)
Gary - I see Fred Davis is playing TE with USC - I can't believe he would be any bigger than Roy Hall or the blocker he is. What about a real spread offense with Hall at TE, Ginn,Gonzo,Robiskie et al at WR ? It would put Hall on an LB for sure.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:51:38 AM)
Makes sense...but OSU really doesn't run the TE in a real spread offense situation for the most part. When they go five wide it's usually with another receiver like Small, for instance, in the slot. I'm not sure that Hall is a conventional tight end in his own mind.

chuangtsu (Nov 3, 2006 10:54:01 AM)
If you haven't already addressed it yet, where is Ross Homan? I thought we were going to see a huge year out of him?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:54:01 AM)
Hi chuangtsu...I thought we would too to be honest with you but that just goes to show you the depth of the linebacking corps. I thought eventually, sooner rather than later, that Homan would move John Kerr out of the lineup but Kerr held off Homan until Curtis Terry emerged and forced Freeman to bump out Kerr. I still believe that Homan, Gibson and Moeller are going to be quality football players at OSU before they leave here.

chuangtsu (Nov 3, 2006 10:54:40 AM)
Who is our starting D-line next year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:54:40 AM)
Gholston, Denlinger, Larimore and Rose!

7-11 (Nov 3, 2006 10:56:43 AM)
I havent been able to watch all the games because were in ACC teritory. But the out of the games ive seen (i love pittman dont get me wrong) But beanie he has some real talent speccially for a freshman. I cant belive he hasnt broke along one yet. He is due. I with they would get the ball to him more. The fumbles will stop.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:56:43 AM)
I like Pittman a whole lot as well and I will not be surprised to see him leave after this year even though he's saying in public that he's going to stay. But Beanie is terrific and OSU will be okay whether Pittman stays or leaves. This guy I'm going to see tonight ain't too bad either! I think he's pretty special too.

chuangtsu (Nov 3, 2006 10:58:25 AM)
If pittman runs to the NFL do we have enough depth at RB? What other RB do we take this year?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:58:25 AM)
Yes see above question. I'm not sure if they take another RB or not even if Pittman leaves. I would think no. Do I personally think Pittman will leave...yes! But I hope he stays.

Guest (Nov 3, 2006 10:59:23 AM)
When will they add the 2009 rucriuts?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 10:59:23 AM)
bhannah asked about 2009 recruits ...and I don't know when Scout will add them...I'm guessing you mean Scout...but there are some good sophomores out there no question.

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy30 (Nov 3, 2006 11:00:28 AM)
Gary - Thanks for your time today. Do you think there is a valid argument that Louisville should be ranked #3 above Florida? And vice versa, is there a valid argument that Florida should be ranked #3 over Louisville. I know that if I were the Big East Commissioner, I'd be saying that if my conference Champion deserves an automatic BCS bid, then it deserves a slot in the BCS Championshio if is one of only two undefeated teams. Your thoughts?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:00:28 AM)
Hi MacAuley...the Big East is way overrated! They definitely are a basketball league that's for sure!

lharbers (Nov 3, 2006 11:01:24 AM)
Do you think we'll lose any juniors other than TG to the NFL?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:01:24 AM)
Hi iharbers...FWIW...I hear voices telling me Pittman is going!

Guest (Nov 3, 2006 11:02:42 AM)
Would you say Beannie has performed as you expected, better than you expected, or not quite as well as you expected? Are the fumbles an anomoly?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:02:42 AM)
Edbuck asked this about Beanie...I think Beanie has performed well this year regardless of the fumbles but I had extremely high expectations for him coming in and I would say he's a little bit below what I was hoping for. There still are four games remaining however. He's a stud no question.

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 11:03:32 AM)
Choices ? Where is that in Parma ? Do you mean Quotes ?

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:03:32 AM)
Quotes ...yes aspen did you hear that? Thank you Hicks for correcting me. I think Aspen knew what I was saying.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:05:57 AM)
Guys...I have to get ready to hit the road now. It's a 7 o'clock game tonight and I have a nice little drive. Say hello to me if you're a Bucknuts fan...I'll be on the sideline...You can't miss me! Tomorrow the Buckeye game is at 3:30 so I'll be at Quotes in Parma watching that before going across the road to see Glenville and Iggy. I hope everyone has a great weekend...

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:06:57 AM)
My state championship picks in the preseason were Ed's, Maple Heights, Steubenville and Mooney in I through IV so they all have a shot. I don't remember right now who my V and VI picks were but it's documented.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:08:01 AM)
Tonight should be a great game. I'm going to go with Piqua...I just decided. TCC was young this year but they play good defense and they have the Great Dane. I just think Saine deserves to be in the state final game against Maple Heights or Nordonia.

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:08:39 AM)
Saine and Jordan Mabin are the top two candidates in my book for the Mr. Football award. Clifford is there also.

Hicks74 (Nov 3, 2006 11:09:04 AM)
Have a good one tonight Gary. Maybe we can see you at "Quotes".

GaryHousteau (Nov 3, 2006 11:09:04 AM)
See you there! Looking forward to it.

MacAuley says BuckeyesBy30 (Nov 3, 2006 11:09:11 AM)
